An evil friend of BF's that's a flight attendent sent us Roomboterstroopwafels from Amsterdam. As you would expect from a city where hash is legal, I cannot stop eating them. Picture a round cookie/wafer, with indentations like a waffle, with butter and maple syrup built in. Yup.

The good news is, the chicken farfale with sun dried tomatoes for dinner was also delicious, as was the Cline Big Red Truck wine. Extremely tannic, but also very fruity. Can't taste the alcohol. Perfect. I logged it as tasting like chocolate cherries black pepper black currant.

I'm afraid if i read all 200 pages, I will know too much about all of you guys. I did do some random dives in. I must say I'm impressed, there is a bit of coherence here.

So I will announce that i am getting that pair of tiger striped shorts that's been on sale on TE for all this time. I thought i was a medium, but i measured myself and i fit the small (which was the biggest size left.) those will be fun to wear.

just got back from doing berry surveys. not alot of berries, no bears either, but i did see alot of bear poop for a certain someone that was REALLY mushy.

the day actually turned out good. though now i'm exausted from hiking around the tundra all day. you would never guess how hard it is to find a marker in the tundra, even with a gps and compass.

FishJr is liking school! She says it's "play class" though because she hasn't learned anything yet. We feared this. I pointed out to her that she learned to draw a kitty cat today. She wants to learn more math and spelling. Off to the store to get some more workbooks. She was the "leader" today - apparently she did very well!

the little girls of today truely are going to rule the world one day.

2nd day of Kindergarten one of my twins came home grumpy. i asked his what was the matter and he told me, "they haven't taught us to read yet. you said they were going to teach us to read in kindergarten!"

ooooohhhh, stroopwafels are the greatest cookies on earth.. i used to work for a dutch bank and whenever anybody from the chicago office had to go to holland they would have to bring them back for the entire office. I miss them so. The one available in the US are always made with margerine (gotta be the real butter ones), or like the ones at whole food, they mess with perfection and add like maple syrup. not that I dislike maple syrup, but it has no place in a stroopwafel.

Shouldn't there be a search function on this thread, so us latecomers can cheat on the test  ? Oh wait, there it is, right on the button up there ... test problem solved!

Cline Big Red, YUM! That's one of our house wines. I certainly didn't expect to find wine chat to accompany tri chat, so what a pleasant surprise.

Some of you were mentioning recently that you like fruity whites. We recently had a delicious bottle of Alexander Valley Vineyards New Gewurz 2005. Gewurztraminer from the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County, CA. Foretaste was peaches and honeysuckle, aftertaste was spicy, kinda like ginger beer. Had a nice malic acid fizziness to the texture. YUM! And to make it even better, I think we paid $8 for it at World Market.

She won't bite me. I have a 12 inch crescent wrench and some sharp cable cutters (they cut spokes too).

Since I posted that, I've been trying to estimate how may spokes I've cut in my lifetime. If I built 5 wheels per week for 15 weeks per year for 4 years, that's 300 wheels, and each wheel had 36 spokes, that's 1080 spokes. And cutting one wheel's worth of spokes was almost enough to give me tendonitis. The fun part was cutting the first half dozen spokes, which are under so much tension that they can fly across a room when you cut them. To be safe, we'd stand the wheel on top of a trash can and cut the lower spokes first.

My estimate of the number of exploding tires I've experienced is 400-500. I'm surprised I don't have hearing loss from that. Less than 5 of those were tires I was riding on, and most of them probably failed stitching in patched sewups.

The new house looks great CC! Good luck with the move. I moved 18 months ago and I still have boxes in the garage that I haven't unpacked. Guess I didn't really need half that stuff after all.

Nanci- we don't seem to get that much american wine here. Y'all must keep it and drink it yourselves! Still in the name of research and maintaining international relationships I have purchased two bottles of Californian red. A 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon from Esser cellars - a snip at £4.99 (about $10) and, a more impressive looking, 2002 shiraz from Clay Station, Lodi, California at £6.99 (just over $13).
Unfortunately, it's lunchtime here and I have to work through the rest of the afternoon before I can go home and start the fun bit of this research project:D

Greetings, girls, from Albany, New York, where I've been the last two weeks because my mom is in the hospital. Too pooped to post much (although I did manage to get my porn name--Cynthia Oakwood (I see a big-breasted blonde extra for this name)--on that thread), but I at least get to check in every night for TD entertainment, so thank you and keep up the good work. Bruno, I've had the Clay Station Shiraz- ($8) 2003. I liked it. Very tannic, black pepper, black cherry. I did not like the Clay Station Malbec. Shiraz is my favorite red.

My wine software (Wine Enthusiast) rates the Esser Cab (2003) at only an 83- "Decent everyday Cab, a little rough, but dry and fruity. Has a hint of blackberry essence on the finish. (I hate Cabs)

I bought three new scrub tops and a pair of pants today. I love it when they have scrub sales (payroll deduction) right at work.

Congratulations CC!! How exciting and scary at the same time! Close to a bike path sounds nice. All I've been doing since I moved into this house last year is landscaping and finishing basement...

I just got back from an overnight trip with a bunch 'o wimmin-friends. What a hoot! We drove over the next town (1 hour away), got 2 adjoining rooms facing the lake at a swanky hotel, and ate, drank, laughed, floated down the canal, shopped, generally had an awesome time. For the past 6 years, I have gone houseboating for a week with these 9 ladies every summer but we weren't able to pull it together this year so we decided to at least do one night away. My darling SO agreed to look after my son for two days so I could join the "Ya-yas" as one friend's husbands calls us. I highly recommend female bonding for any of you who haven't ever done it. Every one of us has had a sad story to tell at one time or other so it's also very therapeutic....

Haven't been on my bike for almost two weeks! But I'm heading to Victoria on Friday and planning to do lots of riding. Can't wait! No kids - just me and my sweetie. :)

Ho-lee cow, Deb. I had no idea that bike wrenching was such an exciting and dangerous profession!

I assume it's not quite so exciting anymore. The large number of blowout in the 70s was due to the 27 x 1 1/4 inch tires that didn't fit rims very tightly. Combined with our shop compressor which inflated tires too fast. It was actually pretty nerve-wracking when 3 or 4 blowouts happened in one day. Sometimes it was so bad that when one person headed towards the compressor, everyone else ran the other way. And the shop was small, so it didn't help much to run away.

Cutting tensioned spokes is inherently dangerous, though we never had any injuries from it. Thank goodness for the metal trash can. Our chief wheelbuilder (not me) did get tendonitis frequently from turning the spoke wrench thousands of times.

without noise induced hearing loss, women don't generally lose much hearing, but most men do in their late 70's or in their 80's. I said generally; lots of women lose hearing...
but even one rock concert can do it. I have a hearing loss from two Jethro Tull concerts that i went to in the early 1970's.

You know you are in trouble when a noise exposure makes your ears ring. the longer they ring, the worse it was...

Mmmm, stroopwafels. Yes, you can buy them on eBay!

Snap, we just hired a batch of very cute smiley little girl techs where I work. Just yesterday, I was noticing one of them, who is _always_ cute and smiley and cheerful, and has pretty graceful hands that she gestures with, and a cute little voice...She wasn't irritating to me- but just so different...

One of them, I guess, got told by a nurse to pull up her pants. She rolls her scrub bottoms down, and then her thong underwear sticks out above it, and the new style for scrub tops is shorter (good for me- I don't look like I'm wearing a dress now) so apparently she was majorly flashing everyone when she'd reach up to adjust the x-ray tube...The nurse probably went home and stomped some teddy bears, too.

I think I hear the stroopwafels calling me!

Tonight we're having chicken alfredo and I will be tasting the Spanish Rose Temperanillo. It's 92 and sunny here at 6:18 PM.

Fer the love of....! Rolling down scrub bottoms? So wrong. So very, very wrong. It's one of the things I love about being at the hospital--I get to work in big ol' pyjama-like scrubs. Nothing sexy about them. Never should be!

Isn't carbo-loading really a life style? I think crackers make a perfectly good dinner.

Nanci
08-16-2006, 03:47 PM
I was supposed to feel up Maizey tonight to see if I thought she might have eggs. No official gender yet. She's to try a rat pinkie Friday night, live...

Torts are good. Buttercup just disappeared on me, causing a minor heart attack, while I was testing the newly-arrived Terry Zero X, less-padded 2005 model, in my PJs. Yes, out on the road...

First impression- it's harder than a frickin' rock!! MP, you must have an older one...How do you stand it? It's like a Brooks! Ok, whoever said that you can tell the perfect saddle when you sit on it and it "disappears" was a freaking genius. The Blackwell Flow- you sit on it, it's cushy and nice, but after 40 miles or so,...I don't know, just not so comfortable. Cut out is nice. Vitesse, the current and historical fav, I sit on it, it disappears. After 250 miles or so, it reappears. But do they all??? Terry Zero X 2005- immediate pressure on all pelvic bones. Sit bones, ok, I can deal with that. The more forward part of the ischiums- um, I don't think I should be feeling pressure there. Cut-out- nice, girly bits are happy. I don't know...Why am I even cheating on Vitesse, after many happy years together??? I am turning into a man. I will take Zero X 2005 on a couple rides to be sure. So should I try the 2006??? I can't afford to test them side-by-side. The styling is beautiful. It weighs nothing. It's just ever so slightly more narrow than the Vitesse. It's hard to mount on my seat post, though, the rails are very close together. It wants to be nose down- I want it slightly nose up. We compromised with level...for now. Why does it have to be so difficult? You buy a set of tires, even if you don't especially love them, they are all right till the next set. Same with a seat post. Same with wheels. I guess it deserves a fair test with bike shorts, not PJs...

Rose Temperanillo- surprisingly dry and very acidic. Tastes like tomatoes, apples, grassy, oniony, maybe very sour grapefruit. I like it. I almost really like it.

Dill is fine. Milly is losing all his feathers, it seems like. I love my Dyson, that's all I can say.

CWR- just don't ever try a stroopwafel. It's like crack. All I do all day is think about them, and try to resist. That's what I'm doing right now. Holy cr*p- I wonder how they compare to the, what are those cookies that everyone is always going on about from Australia...TimTams. I would sell my child for her weight in stroopwafels.

Um, that wasn't the end of my drift, but stroopwafels threw me off.

Stroopwafels are more chewy and gooey.

My four food groups:

Crunchy
Salty
Sweet
Caffeine/Alcohol, depending on time of day

CWR, Tort is a desert tortoise. I have two. They were released from a vet med school research project on maternal herpes virus antibodies- (major cause of upper respiratory infection/death in tortoises) they are three years old and originally from Las Vegas, from a captive breeding colony, and may never be released. Euthanasia or adoption was their only fate. They are named Koko (the brave, good one) and Buttercup (the non-compliant runawayer pantswetter one.)

So far tonight I have eaten three stroopwafels. now I have to go rob some houses to pay for more. (Just kidding!) (Kind of!!)

Why am I even cheating on Vitesse, after many happy years together??? I am turning into a man.

Thank you, Nanci--you made me snorfel into my water ONCE AGAIN.

KY and Fish and others, my mom is having a rough go. Will spare you guys the details, but it's pretty dicey right now. I've been here two weeks. Will go home to Seattle just for the weekend while my sister from Georgia comes up, and then will come back Monday until things settle down. And WHAT TREAT DO I HAVE IN SEATTLE THIS WEEKEND? Well, yeah, we'll go for a long tandem ride on Sunday, sure. But Saturday morning we are meeting with our contractor to discuss the possibility of terminating our contract with him, not because he doesn't do good work but because we are at the bottom of his priority list and weeks are going by while his crews are elsewhere. I think he's just plain overcommitted. So how fun will that be? I'm in the Stress Bowl-a-rama of Life here just at the moment, and if anyone knows the directions to the nearest supersized vat of valium, kindly send those along.

In the meantime, you guys DO look at the Peeps Research website, I hope? This is my favorite, since it has value for future NASA activity and all: http://www.peepresearch.org/vacuum.html

Neurologist #2

What a nice guy! He made so much more sense than Neuro #1! (and he didn't go on and on about his stress, teenagers, etc.)

Neurologically I am beautiful, except my tendon reflexes are WAY too excitable. The MRI boogers are just boogers in the brain, and nothing to worry about. (whew!)

He thinks I've got two things going on. Gluten intolerance, well, he doesn't think so. He thinks it may be actual celiac disease. (same idea, only much nastier.) That's number one.

Number two: there's some wacky genetically dominant thing where your brain stem sets your respiratory rate too high, and your blood gets too alkaline. Things stabilize while you sleep, but during the day you're using up all the buffering your system has, so if you do happen to breathe a smidgen more (cuz yer talking a lot, or you have a cold, for example) you end up with this cascade of neurological symptoms. It also goes along with mitral valve noises (I've got a valve noise) and hyper tendon reflexes and other goofy stuff. I get the yawns, and that goes with this thing, too. Something is kicking it off in the spring, now to find out what the irritant is.

There is no carpal tunnel syndrome in my left hand.

So neuro #1 was sort of on the right track, but she had it backwards. And had the wrong cause. And pissed me off.

Neuro #2 is very cool and made me feel much better about the universe.

Somehow I missed an entire page of thread drift. (?)

Snap--agree with you there on the animated smilies. They kind of give me the creeps. I'm fine with our little friends over on the right ( :p, :D, etc). They sit still. They are predictable.

Salsa, sorry to hear things are so rough with your mom, and I'm glad your sister can come up to spell you. Your friends at TD are thinking of you all.

Nanci, funny how the torts have such different personalities. About the Zero X--the 2006 is also very firm. I'm going to see what I think of it during the tri. I shifted around a fair amount on my 30 mi ride the other day, but that might have been the shorts more than the saddle. But I keep thinking, $110 would go a long way toward a bike stand.

KN, so glad you found a neuro who makes sense. Sounds like he takes you seriously. What a difference that makes!

I'm working a night shift. It's been oddly quiet for about a week on L&D, but things are hopping now. Maybe I'll get in a short nap...fingers crossed.

Yup, gotta take me seriously or I turn into a serious b*tch!

Don't tell me this huge crazy pile of symptoms I've been getting every spring for the last 5 or 10 years is just stress. Nuh-uh! No, ma'am!

Healthcare worker with just enough knowlege to doubt "stress"... dangerous! Demanding! Dastardly! Determined!

This genetic thing is most likely the underlying cause of some panic attack disorders, too. Which I don't have, but my Grandma did. Verrrrry interesting.

I've tried googling these things, but I get a lot of junk.

I've spent enough dough on doctors. Time to spend more money on bikes!

A good read: The Good Good Pig: The Extraordinary life of Christopher Hogwood by Sy Montgomery.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0345481372/sr=8-1/qid=1155787409/ref=sr_1_1/103-5864924-2298241?ie=UTF8

No, this is not about the music director for the Academy of Ancient Music that you hear on Nat'l Public Radio. It is about a pig that was adopted as a runt and given an absolutely luxurious life in rural New Hampshire, and what he taught his human companions about life and what he gave back to them.

I sat in the Phx airport this afternoon reading the last pages and sobbed through the last couple chapters. Montgomery says near the end "So go out into the world where your heart calls you. The blessings will come, I promise you that." I found out Monday when I called my mom from the airport that my father's non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma may have returned, on top of the other mysterious health issues he's been having. Fate that I was reading the book already. It will help me focus on good things as we get through the next few weeks.

KY - Sounds like you're much happier with this doc. Good to hear!

SK - Sorry to hear about your dad. I wish him well and I wish you well, too.

okay - lots of medical issues today.

Nanci - sorry to hear your initial impressions of the Zero X were not so great. There certainly is not a magic saddle that conforms to everyone's shape, is there? Wouldn't that be nice. Maybe it will feel better when you're not wearing PJ's. ;) I think I have the 2006 - I forgot to look it up.

Lise - did you get a good night's sleep?

I slept well last night. I had a talk with your Deputy Area Director yesterday and he seemed to indicate that I have a very good chance to get this job. It was definitely a positive conversation. stroopwafels and timtams all these funny names.

must admit the stroopwafels do look like they could be addicting. are they crunchy?

no, not very crunchy. nice cookie texture with that delish carmel in between the two layers. really nice way to eat them is with a cup of coffe. pour a piping hot cup of coffee, then balance the cookie over the cup. the steam from the coffee melts the carmel. mmmmmmm

Nanci - there's nothing to do about the brainstem and the blood acidity (or lack thereof) The researchers have only just started figuring this one out, and the only "treatment" out there is just being aware and controlling the breathing when the symptoms erupt. And keeping an eye on my mitral valve noise.

I'm betting there's something dietary I could do, there's gotta be SOME way to either increase my blood acidity or increase the buffering in my system. (hey, I could drink vinegar and eat baking soda! jk!) It kinda looks like something in the spring is kicking off my gut, and then my gut is kicking off the brainstem thing. Neuro #2 said can't do much until it comes back again next year.

It's all chemistry. I should've been paying attention in chem classes....

PJs ride- I just ride around in my grass, then out the limerock driveway, then down the road 200 feet to the huge paved driveway across the street, where I circle around until there isn't any traffic, then I can ride down the road in the aerobars to the paved driveway 500 feet down the road, where I circle around till the coast is clear again. It works ok for adjusting stuff.

See, the first thing I do when I get home (4 or 5PM) is take off my scrubs, take a bath, and put on my PJs. _Then_ I do all the bike testing/wine tasting/ tort grazing/book reading/dinner making.

The first time I heard the Air & Water Show, I was in nursing school. I had moved to a neighborhood much closer to where they perform. It was 1986. Reagan was President. The fighter jets screamed overhead, and I thought, "Oh cr*p, he pushed the button!" I hit the floor and crawled to the window. Then crawled to the TV. When no one was reporting the end of the world as we knew it, I eventually figured it out! Sheesh.

What a good TD gang you are. Thanks for all the good wishes. I hope you are glad to know, by the way, that Mr. Salsa calls you my hooligan friends, as in "Yeah, you and your hooligan friends on TE." That means he thinks y'all are cool. He likes bad girls (and good cyclists).

SK and CWR, so sorry about your dads. Please keep us posted. And Nanci, losing both parents too early. Ugh. Such hard stuff. The brief report on my mom is that she went into the hospital two weeks ago with a very rapid heartbeat, dehydration, lethargy; was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism; all was just getting under control and we were doing discharge planning for a week or two of rehab, when she had a very scary GI bleed this past Saturday night. They found a huge ulcer just past her duodenum. Medicines have been stopping the bleeding and she just got the NG tube removed tonight (she was giddy with joy). The double-scary part is that she has a mechanical heart valve but cannot take Coumadin right now because of the ulcer, so is at significant risk of an embolism. She's 80, and her system is being very taxed by all these events, BP very high right now, starting to get some hospital-induced problems...etc. She's cool, a real adventurer, traveler, opera and ballet lover, former speech pathologist, brave, stoic, a smart-***. Anyway...things are dangerous but better than they were a few days ago. My anxiety level is somewhere around the newly IDed 12th planet's orbit, I think. Whoof.

I emailed the name and author of SK's book to myself so I can look for it on abe.com once I regain some form of consciousness.

Our cats are MUCH smarter than we are about sensing earthquakes. They're always getting themselves under the coffee table already while I'm still sitting up further on the couch, furrowing my brow, deep in thought, and saying useful things like "Holy ****...I think that's an earthquake..."

Lise, that story is a classic.

Bubba sounds pretty darn cool, actually. So is Mr. Salsa. I got lucky in that respect. In '96, we lost my dad AND his mom so the mutual leaning system got well tested that year. He's a doll (cute, too). Thank God for a guy with a cool, sweet temperament.

I want to try a Vitesse.

KY, so interesting about this neurologist's info. Glad you finally got some satisfaction. Helps to be taken seriously, doesn't it?

Fish, I'm sure you've said it elsewhere, but I too would like to know where the bee job would be.

CC, the house thing sounds great, actually--congrats!

I think Snap's tire-tread smiley-grumpy face is very funny. Not sure what this says about me.

I think Lise is correct about crackers making a fine dinner.

I think FishJr sounds like a very cool kid.

oooh, postcards! If I can find that number for the spaceship.... Thinking of you and your mom, and family. So glad that Mr. Salsa is such a great guy. If he has any single friends in the Chi-town area....;)

Hang in there. Sometimes it's moment by moment, sometimes it stretches out and you get some relief. Wishing your mom all the best. Keep us posted.

My mom had a health scare a few years ago; I saw the whole world seem to change in a few moments.

SK and CWR, you guys, too.

Today my mom emailed me and my sibs (younger bro and sis) that she's going to retire at the end of the year. I'm happy for her, but also worried. She hasn't done any retirement planning. My sister's going to talk to her about it on a long drive they have coming up. Tonight I thought, "Well, between the three of us, we can take care of her." It was sort of comforting.

Earthquakes, eh? Everybody OK? Good.

Yeah - CC has it right - rollers are pretty much what they sound like. All of the earthquakes I've noticed in the last few years have been these kind of loud jolts - my first thought is that something like a bookcase has fallen over. I notice the sound almost before I notice the movement. These have all been very close to me - within 5 miles, a few within 2 miles  That's probably why the sound is so noticable, and the movement feels like one solid jolt - because the wave hasn't had any room to get going yet (can you tell I'm not up on my physics?).

The thing I don't like about rollers is the feeling that they could get more intense as they go along. The Loma Prieta quake felt like that to me. We had a roller in the city (SF) last year - I was talking to a client on the phone, looking out the window, and I started feeling a little dizzy, and then I noticed all the cords for the blinds were swaying, all the while I'm thinking "What's going on?" ("Earthquake!" is usually the last thing to occur to me!) Finally, a few seconds into it, I told my client that I thought we were having an earthquake and I'd better get off the phone!

Fish - we'll try to arrange a little one - just so you can have the experience!

we have earthquakes around here all the time too, just don't pay much attention to them anymore. not a big one (yet) but in anchorage when i had my wisdom teeth pulled and on some good drugs, it was quite fun.

there are also active volcanos around here. they are always smoking, but according to the volcanologists, they think one of them going to be a big one soon.

one around anchorage was causing lots of problems for awhile.

I hate rollers most of all. Somehow they are the creepiest. I'm most aware of the lack of noise before it starts and then seeing your cement pad floor actually roll in waves across the room is like something out of a movie. However, I will take earthquakes to hurricanes and tornados -- and this is said by someone who was thrown out of a top bunk during the Silmar (San Fernando) earthquake in the 70s.

I'm a standby today for my dad. The MRI has been moved up to today at 2 pm. They're looking for brain involvement. The GP said to my mom out in the hallway "he's hot" and this is a doc who doesn't talk much. It looks like the abdomen is involved this time. If it's in the brain also, well . . . . who knows. His oncologist is on vacation all of next week so my parents have been told to stay at the hospital until they get a phone report of the MRI. My mom thinks it is so the doc can call in an order for a porta-cath. My personal opinion is that no doc worth his salt would do this without consulting with the patient on ALL of his options. Dad is considerably older and in poorer health, mentally and physically, than when we went through this in 2001 -- and the cancer could be far more extensive. I'm not sure yet about bone involvement. I'm hoping this in not family battle time. My mother is absolutely excellent at jumping to conclusions and making decisions for everyone without consultation. After all, she reads the books so she knows. Everyone hear the sarcasm dripping from my fingers?

OK, two clients appts this morning. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest first.

There are a lot of feral peacocks in California's central valley. While they are beautiful I'm glad the closest ones live over a mile from me. I don't need them as an alarm clock.

Mr. Fish and I have been perusing websites looking at potential houses in the Baton Rouge area. Today we both (independently) came upon this one. http://www.homesbyowner.com/baton_rouge/home_view.asp?homeid=42765

Cr*p! I should have told them to do that! Probably not included in the complimentary tune up, though... Somehow I managed to lose a bar end plug ( ), so I asked them to replace that. Not only did they replace the one, they replaced both, so they match, and they didn't charge me anything for it. These guys are still extending the 10% discount to me. That's only supposed to be for stuff you buy from them in the 1st month after your bike purchase. I bought my bike 4 months ago. I <heart> my LBS!

Cr*p, what a night. It took me three hours to get to Petaluma; whipping down highway 101 at a top speed of 15 mph. I get here, get checked in and decide I'm starving. So I go to good old Applebee's, since I like the Cajun Tilapia, and I can walk over. Have a drink, have wine with dinner, float back to the hotel. Unpack my bag................

SH!T SH!T SH!T SH!T SH!T

I not only forgot my bike sox, I forgot the all important sport bra. No...the girls will not go riding free. Search the handy visitor's guide - ah ha! A Mervyns. Off I go.....nothing. I did find some sox, hopefully they won't kill me. I'm heading back, thinking KMart? Like a beacon in the west, I see a Big 5 Sporting Goods.

Angels sing, shout Hallelujah!

Thirty-six dollar later, I am equipped for tomorrow's whopping 35 mile ride.

Now I'm watching the DaVinci Code.

I'm trying to pack my tri bag for this weekend, like right now. Got all stressed cuz there is no way my pump is gonna fit on my bike, and even if I bungee it onto my rack, I'm afraid it would fall off and cause an accident behind me. (i usually carry it in my pannier)

so do I go buy a little one (Topeak Road Morph) tomorrow and try to attach it the morning of the race, or do I trust my tubes not to flat and just go without?

And I can't find the bra I wanted to wear with my blue t-shirt tomorrow. Which is only the packet-pickup and bike-racking day, so why should I really care if my bra matches my t-shirt?

Really, the goofy things I find to fret over...

Hey, I'll be your drowned rat for the day.

A friend & I planned a mtn bike ride for today, rain or shine. Guess what, it POURED when we were out...It was so much fun but i couldn't see without my glasses...Picking the right line was hard & knowing if i was going over rocks or leaves was interesting. The river crossing we laugh at during the summer was indeed a river crossing today! The batteries in the camera weren't charged enough so no photos today kids.

I was SOAKED by the time we got back to the car-we looked rather funny when we walked into the cafe for a coffee....

I don't have to explain how heavy my clothing was when i placed in the washing machine...

Ian & are out mtn biking tomorrow..I get to have fun in the mud again!!!

have a good evening...

Yes Lise - it's not a glass slide, it's the other kind. I'm feeling much better about my talk now. My current obsession is about what I'm going to wear. I've just been shopping (not my favorite thing to do, unless it's for bike stuff) and found nothing. Yes, I have clothes. But I wanted a cool skirt. I don't have one of those and apparently the stores don't either. Oh well. Black pants and white shirt it will be. Classic, but boring.

CWR - they spray the cotton fields to kill off the leaves so the cotton bolls will pop open and be harvested. It is sprayed from crop dusters and smells something like erasers, but sharper. It has a very petroleum odor to it. Not gas, but something else. It's nasty and makes everyone cough and sneeze and have major sinus issues and such. It starts to accumulate. The smell gets into the car when driving past the fields. I feel like I don't want to breathe when I'm around the stuff. Needless to say, when they start defoliating, the outdoor riding ends for a while.

Snap and Kit - hope you feel better. :)

This is so frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No, Maizey would not eat the CENSORED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. She licked it a bunch, and nuzzled it, and later let it ride around on her back...I left her with it in her usual feeding container for about three hours.

Then, this morning, after I had nightmares about the CENSORED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all night, I put her back in (probably stupid, but it was still alive and I didn't want to waste it) and she showed no interest. While I was making lunch for later, I peeked in on her, and she wasn't in the container!!!!!!!!!! Panic!!!!!!!!! She was in the laundry room, on top of the washer, so she could be in quiet almost dark lighting. I call BF, and we clear everything out, then I look down behind the dryer with a flashlight, and there she is, about four inches of her sticking out from the disconnected dryer exhaust hose, which goes down under the house and out!! We make a plan- (this is a tiny laundry room) BF will quickly pull the dryer out and I will swoop in as soon as I can squeeze between the dryer and the washer and grab her before she can turn and disappear forever under the house.

The plan goes off perfectly- except instead of trying to escape, Maizey doesn't move- like, "what are you doing grabbing me up so quickly like that???" Major heart attack. Disaster averted. I can't believe the lid wasn't latched securely. I can't believe we located her within five minutes of discovering her missing.

The CENSORED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, BTW, went on a motorcycle ride down to the neighbor's cornsnake.

I felt her belly, too- no eggs in there.

Humph to that PM thing. Go Nanci. I love hearing about Maizey, and she is who she is and she eats what she eats. I keep trying to convince all members of the universe's food chain that warm chocolate pudding would create world peace and make the lion lie down with the lamb (armed with bowls and spoons only), but only a few girlfriends have taken me up on that thought so far. So yes please--anyone offended by Maizey's diet, please ignore the posts rather than ask that the posts not be made. The rest of us would like to read them. First Amendment and all. Thank you.

Nanci, I have found my goofy little half-Aby cat, Nina, sitting quietly side by side with a mouse she captured and brought inside. Since neither of our two cats got trained by a parent cat to hunt, they don't really know what to do with what they catch, except to play with it for a while and then ignore it. Our cats once spent an entire day trapped in our very small bathroom with a mouse they'd brought inside who then cleverly hid in between the magazines in the bathroom magazine rack. They were obsessed with the fact that the mouse was in there somewhere but never could figure out quite what to do about it. Silly girls.

Nanci? Sounds like there's a problem? Did you forget to get a vegan pet? Snakes eat censored, my dog eats some censored and some vegetable matter. She likes avocados, fruits, oranges if they are peeled first and loves to chase grapes.

I'm told I should take it easy on those.

People eat censored that's why we have incisors is for tearing up censored.

If I could live on chocolate pudding I would certainly do it. Chocolate is deadly to dogs! No pudding for Mae. No rice pudding even! Somehow she copes.

Even though my dog eats censored I feel good about her being a rescue dog and giving her a good life. I would never buy a pet, would always get a shelter pet.

I think that in itself is a very animal friendly thing to do.

Nanci you do soo much for animals, it's partly because of you that I was inspired to get two bird feeders, build a toad house (so far no toads, maybe they need a little sign).

My cats had a tendency to chase (censored) around the basement and I'd get to dispose of mauled (censored). It was pretty gross. Cats will be cats. I've also got a friend who keeps bins and bins of live, kinda crowded (censored) for her python and ... I actually forget what species the other is. I don't care so much as long as (censored) is treated with a little respect instead of just food for whatever pet it's feeding. That said, I miss (censored) hunting in Wisconsin.

Nanci - I love your posts about your critters, regardless of what they eat. Keep it up! Lordy! If someone doesn't care to hear about it, then skip over the post. I always fed my snakes live food. They wouldn't even look at previously killed food. I love the image of the pinkie riding Maisey. How on Earth did it get on top of her?

I had a columbian boa for a few years (donated it to Scales and Tales (MD DNR environmental ed program) for which I turned a closet into a home. That snake was an escape artist (or maybe I wasn't such a good cage builder). I found it many times in the laundry room (in the basement) up in the rafters. I made it all the way down from the 2nd floor. When I temporarily had a pet rabbit (rescue from an antibody study - it was the control), I thought the snake was going to try to eat it. Luckily that was one seriously pesky rabbit. That rabbit gave my kitten a ride around on his back when I brought the kitten home from the shelter. That was a sight.

Carry on! Happy posting!

my small one kept chacing the black lab all over. when my big one ran ahead of me on the trail with two feet of tundra on either side of her the other two jumped directly over the top of her on the tundra. if i only had a camera for that exact moment i could've made some money! it was so cute.

It was kind of a bummer, but I would go in the other room some times. Sorry Maisey isn't eating. Anyway, I have to say Nanci that know more about wild and amazing animals than anyone I know - and if DD were old enough to be on TE, she'd be your best friend because she is OBSESSED with animals. She's dying for ANY type of animal. (Let it be known that she is NOT derpived, already having had rats, mice, fish, dog, cats). We pick up the gecko tomorrow.... SK, am thinking about you and dad.

Mom a little better today, still living on the edge. Contractor meeting went OK--we got him to agree that we would dock him part of his profit if he didn't make the next milestone date ('course, that would engender some arguing and negotiating, but still a big improvement, we hope. He does do excellent work, just not timely. So let's hope...will periodically keep you posted. Or, if you read about me in the newspapers with a Lizzie Borden kind of theme, you'll know it DIDN'T work).

I couldn't find the earlier posted Maizey pic, but looked up corn snakes and saw a pic there. Boy, they're gorgeous.

Shirley Jackson (remember "The Lottery"?) used to have a cat who was passionate about cantaloupe. And the Siamese cat I had as a kid used to love canned asparagus. And goofy Nina, the half-Aby cat mentioned above with the mouse-sitting thing, gets absolutely wild-eyed with ecstasy over drinking the liquid in a can of chick peas--that is really hilarious to see. They're all so funny, and so different one from the next. Endless entertainment.

You can PM me about wine any time you want to. Unless you're telling me not to write about that, either. And don't think I don't worry about the person(s) who are not able to drink alcohol for personal reasons. I do.

I rode the Zero X for 30 miles today. It was ok...I want to see what I think on a longer ride. I adjusted the tilt up and down a bunch of times. It sits so low on the rails it is hard to adjust. I wonder what the difference is between pressure on the bones versus actual pain. Because I _feel_ the saddle on my bones, but it doesn't hurt, but it is very noticable. Then I have some sort of, I don't know, maybe one of those weird blood vessel things right in the underwear-leg crease, that gets irritated easily, (it's been there forever- sometimes causes more pain, sometimes it's not noticeable) that was bothering me today, so if that was totally gone, would I like the saddle more?? It's much better with bike shorts than pajamas...

I had a great ride/float/swim/picnic today.

Yosemite. We pretty much go every year with DH's parents, his sister and her family. We camped at Tuolomne Meadows 4 days and then spent a few days at Wawona (with a real room - though for us, sharing a DOUBLE bed is worse than camping! ) Anyway, it was GREAT. I will post pics in a few days. I did some AMAZING hikes. After a time, no one wanted to hike with me. Don't know why. I guess it's my pace. Trying to stick to the 4 mph pace, which is a challenge on rough terrain at altitude (10,000 plus one day). Kids had rivers. Saw lots of deer, chipmunks, squirrels. No bears.

My BIL and I did a 13 1/2 mile hike one day with the most amazing view I have ever seen. I will post a pic of that but it won't do it justice. We did it in about 4 1/2 hours, which was pretty zippy - included some sitting by a lake to contemplate my new blister.

MP- I even had it on my MTB- it's been there for the last three permanent and two trial saddles. (Like since 1999) I thought at first it was an ingrown hair, or cyst, or, I don't know. Probably not the same ingrown hair for seven years, huh? I ought to have my gyn nurse look at it, but it's never there when she's looking at it. See this kind of vague purplish deal that you can't feel or anything? Well, when I ride my bike, sometimes, but not always, it swells up to the size of half a pea and hurts like a bi*ch!! Sometimes. Then it's gone in a day. I have worse things to worry about.

Salsa, I found Maizey last July when I had pneumonia and couldn't go to work but felt guilty laying around so was out doing yard work with a 104F fever. I lifted up a pile of brush, and there she was, like a jewel in the grass. I love her. But not this week, after all the trouble she's causing!

I had banana pudding after my ride, and after my swim/float down the river. it apparently didn't cause me to break out in world peace...

I think this is petty and juvenile. I only PM'ed you because I think saying something privately, aside to someone is far more respectful to them and their peers than putting it on the public board, and God so help me, if I ever offend anyone, I hope they extend the same courtesy so I know where my limits are. While I was on the phone with RM, I KILLED some roaches and fed them to the first toad to ever inhabit my yard!!! He loved eating their still-kicking little bodies!! Too bad I don't have a toad house. Previously, I captured him (later released) and tried to get him to sing on the phone for RM, but though he was vibrating in that way toads do, it must have been out of my hearing range...

Then I found a tiny anole asleep on the Mexican Petunias. While this might have been a perfect appetizer for Picky Snake, I left him asleep, since I love anoles as much as I love snakes.

I photographed both- but it was dark, so who knows.

Well, so that's good news, right? Sortof? As good as can be?

Glad you had a good ride. Where'd you go???Oh yeah. Remember in Lance's book It's Not About the Bike when he talks about the brain lesions? Big time serious stuff when it goes across the brain/blood barrier. Not to mention, the fewer sites involved the better but as I understand it there are two basic things you do not want - opposite sides of the diaphram and in the brain.

Ride was just from Davis out and over Cantelow. Nothing really special just a quiet day with Bubba after a crappy week. I found out about Dad when I called my mom from the airport on Monday as I was leaving for Scottsdale.

The ride was a bit more adventurous than normal because we saw road constructions signs but didn't think anything of it. Half of California has road construction after the winter rains. It turned out that about 3/4 mile of road was ripped down to bare dirt and some gravel. No big deal except for the last eighth mile where they were actively grading and watering. After slipping sideways a few times (and being grateful for our mtbike skills), we walked. Looks cleats and mud -- not so good. And funny thing, Bill's Seven was not built for mud clearance between the tire and the seat tube. We'll have to register a complaint. Of course, the Mercian sailed through. I really like the makeover.

I don't have a real toad house, as real estate is so expensive here in the Bay Area I can't afford a second home. But on a "save the toads" specific site (forget the link, savetoads.com is NOT it) they showed how to make one out of a clay planter set at an angle.

Now, just need a toad to find it....

To mestatasize is actually just the spreading of the cancer from one body part to another. Frequently it is the bone and, yes, you are right it is very serious.

http://www.cancer.gov/Templates/db_alpha.aspx?CdrID=46710

I think lymphoma and leukemia are linked together because the blood and lymph node cancers are similar somehow.

You know, I may build a toad house since I live here in Toad Tunnel Town. I swear I heard one a while back. I also dearly want a bat house. We had some living in the rafters above our front door. The droppings made it look like we had mice but I figured they're eating all those nasty skeeters with West Nile. In case anyone is interested, Yolo County has one of the highest rates and we had a death this week from it. Hey, bats! Wanna come live at my house?

speaking of body parts, i took my mother out to adopt a cute new kitten to replace her dear old cat that died, and my mother says to me, your figure is better now that you're riding. Your legs look great and so does your butt!
my mother said that!

so with all this impressive (cough) musculature, why are all of those muscles screaming after our wild 33 mile ride yesterday?
I think i just proved that it's a lot easier to ride 100 miles on THE BACK of a tandem than it is to ride 33 miles on the roadbike.
NOw, mind you, i was exhausted completely after the 100 miles (talking about day 1 of RSVP ) and completely wiped out;

I wonder, Mimi, if the work you're doing on a Tandem is all the same aerobically but on a slightly lesser scale strength-wise, so while the long rides on the Tandem have done great stuff toning and improving your endurance, a shorter ride on a roadie (at the same speed you'd expect on a Tandem) has your muscles screaming "HEY! You can PM me about wine any time you want to. Unless you're telling me not to write about that, either. And don't think I don't worry about the person(s) who are not able to drink alcohol for personal reasons. I do.

Nanci--I sure as *censored* hope you're not worrying about me. When something doesn't interest me (like, oh, say, wine), I generally ignore the post. I like to tease you when you say you poured it out (the waste! the waste!), but after 22 years' sobriety, posts about how oaky or fruit-loopy wine tastes will not tempt me! :p (um, if you weren't worried about me, then, uh, never mind! :D )

PS, even though I haven't read the 6 pages of TD y'all generated while I was off triathlating, I do believe that *censored* is a live mouse sticking out of a snake's mouth! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Or, riding around on a snake's back, which is considerably less scary. (of course the use of *censored* in the 1st paragraph of this post does not refer to a mouse.)

MP: I think the echo was fine. The sonographer seemed to think so. I don't have the official report. My heart did fine on the tri today. Ooh! Ooh! Where's this site?!

Lise- I've been reading your posts about the EKG etc pretty carefully given my own experiences with it. I have to say I have the *same* thing. Not a missed beat/hiccup/pause at all when I'm active or even redlining it, but laying in bed, or trying to sleep, or sitting at work, it happens enough to worry me. Hm. I've been doing the 'stupid kid' thing and letting it go after having seen the doc once on it and being told 'eh, it's nothing' but I'll go have more extensive testing when I have better insurance. I promise.

CWR- Can I be on Team Danger if I can get myself declared a "danger to myself and others"? Sure it's not bears or even 'vicious' weiner dogs, but... I can get pretty noisy when ruffled.

I think that's pretty accurate. I get happily fried after long tandem rides but rarely have muscle soreness--however, I always come out of my single bike rides (where I try to work myself pretty hard to build strength and speed) with some mild muscle soreness--it's how I know I'm working those muscles hard, with no help.

My weekend:

Saturday rode 30 miles from Ichetucknee State Park. Out 15 on a paved trail, and back 15 on the most perfect country roads I have ever been on- smooth, flat, shady, breezy, hardly any traffic...Rescued a Gopher Tortoise who was crossing the highway in moderate traffic.

Zero X is still being evaluated- like it better with bike shorts- now it needs a longer than 30 ride. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to take it on a 200k, though. It's quite nice in aero position. I did a lot of tilt adjusting on it- it's still not dialed in. Because it sits pretty low on the rails, it's much more difficult to adjust than the Vitesse.

Ate picnic lunch- I brought chicken ciabatta bake- cold- which was perfect, and a group member made fantastic banana pudding- his signature dish.

Floated/snorkeled the Itchetucknee River for 2 hours after lunch. Got so cold my hands turned blue and my teeth were chattering. Saw one turtle and numerous fish. This river would be good anti-weed aversion training! It constantly touches you, but isn't scary in the crystal clear water.

Ate more banana pudding.

Found two cool animals during phone call from Running Mommy Saturday night.

Expanded my patio Sunday morning, and built a little brick landing for where I park my truck in the tree garage, and started a stepping stone walk from the house to the patio. Limited by available funds, as usual. Grazed tortoises and drank coffee from my SS mug.

Rode the MC two hours south on the Interstate  to the tiny town of Belleville or Belleview (much further than anticipated) for a meeting to do with MC rights/political action. Bought $5 worth of tickets, won $45 in the 50/50 drawing, used $20 to join the organization which I have wanted to join but haven't had a spare $20...Also won a certificate to get nails done, but traded that for a pizza certificate, also not in my town, so gave that to our friends.

Rode to friends house, drank an EXCEPTIONAL bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, Covey Run, 2003, rated 88 by Wine Enthusiast- love it! Fell asleep on the floor after much cat petting, woke up, they'd made grilled chicken and baked beans and coleslaw for dinner.

Wonderful ride home on country roads through horse country at dusk.

Nanci, that sounds like a perfect weekend. What are MC rights? I originally read that the grazing torts drank out of your SS mug! :p That would be a sight.

I've decided that the Zero X is going back. I really wanted to love it, but I don't. It's especially uncomfortable in the crease of my leg, ie, where the thigh meets the pelvis. Does that mean it's too narrow? I am pretty ignorant about what it is I don't like. In yesterday's race, I was in the aerobars most of the time, and my pubic bone is quite sore today. I imagine that any saddle will take some getting used to. The ZeroX is OK for shorter rides, but not comfortable for longer ones. In my limited experience, I think I like wider, softer seats. Nanci, I know you love your Vitesse. Do you think I should give it a try?

Dachshund, I cracked up at your comment about the peacock. Yes, very Liberace!

KN, how're you feeling today? Sore? Proud as a...well...peacock? You should be! Did you guys get finisher's medals? I say, wear it all week! :D L.

I'm a little sore, but not bad. The 50 minute walk was a good cool-down from all the swimming and riding effort. By then end i felt great. Other than a headache and a little muscle soreness I feel fine today.

Of course, I haven't gotten out of bed yet... (gotta love a laptop)

SKnot was visiting a friend yesterday and his mom was very interested in the Danskin. She said she'll do it with me next year!

See what you started, Lise?:D

Oh, yeah, and while I was snoozing a little I was looking at the bare wall in my bedroom and thinking how nice it would look with framed medals/numbers/pictures from Danskins covering it top to bottom...

I think you can buy those box-like deep frames that will hold a medal, number, and picture. Kinda like a scrap book on the wall. Shadow boxes? What're they called? Anyway, has anyone framed their stuff? Is it pretty easy?

I don't think I'll frame my tank top that Sally Edwards signed. I think I'll wear it. Sally's got my back!

Hi all!

Update on life in Tucson:
-Waaaaay too expensive (insurance tripled, housing doubled...)
-Very pretty scenery
-Unbelievable traffic
-Lots of cool twisty roads
-Going broke exponentially
Moral of the story...we're most likely heading home to IL.

Oh well, life is all about the experience and this has been an interesting one. ;)

Nanci "Fell asleep on the floor after much cat petting, woke up, they'd made grilled chicken and baked beans and coleslaw for dinner."

Your cats made dinner? I gotta go back to being a cat person. Just kidding you.

Queen, come to CA, maybe the Bay Area could be too expensive (I don't know how I manage) but try Sacramento!

Queen-I'm going to have to go through all the posts to read up on your move to Arizona in the first place...I hope your move/poss move back to IL goes smoothly.

:( :( I need cheering up kids. We are entered in the 6hr mtb event this weekend and am feeling a bit down. :( Whenever I see two of our biking group friend, I'm always reminded of how slow I am...:( They don't verbally remind me, it's just there...
I know i'm slowly getting faster & better but just not faster fast enough in my mind. :( Ian has been trying to cheer me up but with purchasing a house & the 6hr I'm just a tad bit :(

Off to bed...:)

It wasn't my cat, it was our friends' cat. He was very snuggly. The people made dinner, not the cat. If there was a cat that actually cooked that would be pretty nice. Maybe better than a DH that cooked.

Queen- that's disappointing, or is it? Did you get to do any cool diving while you were there? Will you have to find a whole new job? Cost of living here in Gainesville is cheap!!

LUNGS! HEART! WAIT UP!!!!!" Just a thought. It's early and I haven't had my coffee

Thank you both, I didn't know. I was starting to wonder if i was a dilettante, sitting on the back of the tandem while dh slaved away under my weight.

So we now have a knotted tri veteran here. very cool, huh!

thought of Nanci last night; as we got to know the son's new girlfriend who is allergic to cats, dogs, and other furry things, SHE had pet snakes.

kit your mind is a danger but that's a different story!

winddance i don't seem to get runner's high everytime, but when i do, its good! what keeps me running is DPITA's words "the more you run the skinnier your legs will get" i always think of those words before i go running.

queen sorry your moving out of tucson. parent's moved me from wi down to phoenix and then 5 years to the day they moved back to wisconsin. they weren't happy with life in phx. i stuck around for 2 more years and moved up here. like it much more up here.

my new saddle: i got the terry damselfly in the mail on saturday and it just barely stopped raining enough for me to try it out yesterday. after some moving of it, and retightening it once i almost fell off because i didn't screw it down all the way. it was great. my sitbones are still sore from the other saddle (i think). i'm going to keep it and see what happens after my sitbones 'heal'.

Craze, I'm not sure how to cheer you up. If I go shopping and buy some stepping stones for the walk I am making, will that help? If I put off doing a gastrografin enema (on a pt, not me) till tomorrow, will that cheer you up? (It works for me!) I will give Mr. Bird some kisses- that always makes me happy. I have a new bottle of wine, a Chardonnay/Riesling from SE Australia that I plan on tasting tonight- what an odd combination- I am looking forward to it! I will toast to you with Dillbird and the tort babies- that should help...

Queen, sorry to hear you're needing to leave Tucson. It sucks to have the same things in life cost way too much more.

CC--cheer up, mate! There's Clif Bloks on the way! And Lara bars! All the house hunting stuff can be exhilerating, but exhausting, too.

I posted my tri times up in the Race Results. I am, overall, happier about them than I expected to be. I must've added 3 min on the bike, fiddling with my race #. I'll never put it on that way again. It was like a flag between my knees, blowing and scraping my legs with every pedal stroke. I finally wrapped it up under my bento box.

Today: Vacuum, clean, grocery shop, return the Zero X to LBS. Think I'll stick with my Serfas saddle for now, unless Nanci convinces me to try the Vitesse! L.

Hey Nanci what winery is it from?? I use to live down the road from the Barossa Valley (South Australia) and had a lovely time tasting wines....no idea about wines just liked trying them all.:D

PS Do you know what the bird is in the Holstein thread pictures???

What Holstein thread?

It's Lindemans. I also like Rosemount. But not all of either. Not Yellowtail. Of course Penfolds. I have a Kangarilla Road Shiraz I'm sitting on, and a Jacob's Creek sparkling wine, and a Fox Creek red blend of mostly Shiraz.

Lise, I keep hoping I'll find a substitute saddle, then Vitesse could visit you to see if you liked her. It's an older model- not one that's so easy to find today- it doesn't have the gel dealy, or the scuff protection. Not even sure what the rails are. Ti or chro-mo.

So many vultures here - they will apparently throw up in self defense. They also pee on their feet to clean them. I don't get close enough to investigate this.

How is puking a defensive mechanism? OK, if guy vulture was trying to hit on a girl vulture, and she wasn't interested, I could see puking to make him go away...peeing on your feet certainly would clean them. You just know somebody got their PhD observing and documenting vulture peeing/feet cleaning habits.

Nanci, I don't know if I should have LBS get me a Vitesse to try, or just stick with my Serfas for the time being. I can't believe how much I like the wide and cushy seat my Larkspur came with. Maybe I should even try that on the Bianchi, but it sure would look silly. Not at all sleek. But oh, so comfy. It's even called Comfort Ride, I think!

School field trips to Audobon centers and the like.

The birds gorge themselves til they are so full they can't fly. So if a predator comes, their defense is projectile vomiting. Their feet get filthy from rooting around in carcasses, so they pee on them to clean. They have to feathers on their heads for basically the same reason - they are digging around in dead bodies to eat, so the skin head stays cleaner.

Went to the LBS today. Returned the Zero X. Told John what I didn't like about it. He said maybe I needed a narrower saddle. "Could he suggest one?" I queried. "No", he said. I stood there silently, a bit stunned at his disinterest in selling me a saddle. He took care of another customer, came back, said, "Maybe a men's saddle." Pulled a white, narrow saddle from under the counter, sort of tossed it down in front of me, went to answer the phone. I looked at the saddle for awhile. He came back. I said, "Do you recommend I buy this one?" He said, "No.", and put it back under the counter. "Just something like that. Maybe the Terry Fly. We don't have one." Me: "Can you order one for me?" John: "I have them on back order. No, wait, here's one." http://www.terrybicycles.com/detail.html?c=Saddles&sc=Men%27s+Best+All-Around&item_no=2123900 I love the little saying on the back! Maybe I can get Terry to make me a custom saddle that says, If I can see you, I can pass you! :D

John puts the Fly saddle down on the counter, goes off to ring up another customer. The customer, an adorable young guy I've seen there before, chats with me about triathlons and saddles. I tell him a bit about Pleasant Prairie. He's doing Accenture next week. If I weren't probably twice his age...sigh...;) Anyhoo. John turns back to me. I say, "Can I try this saddle?" John: "Sure, do I owe you money back?" Me: "No, the Fly costs $10 more." John: "Oh, just take it."

I don't know if he's positive I'll return it anyway, so why bother with money, or if he was so eager to get me out of there that he would've given me a pair of gloves, too!?

Soooo....narrower? That would not have been my guess. But I'll give it a try. I have tomorrow off as well. I'm planning to go for a spin, just see how far I feel like going. I'm going to go North this time, up Sheridan road. Take my time, not push it too hard. I want my legs to feel OK when I'm back at work for my usual Wed marathon of midwifery.

My doc called today and told me the echo was normal. I told her I didn't feel any wierdness in my chest during the tri (or anymore than the usual Oh Lord What Have I Done wierdness  ), but sitting at my desk, my heart was flip flopping. She said, "you have PVCs." OK. Then she said something wonderful, "They usually get better with exercise." Well! Would'ja look at that? I guess I'd better keep exercising! This has been an interesting excursion into cardiology, and I'm glad the upshot was good.

I'm also working with the energy healer to do some (stuff I don't understand) energy and breath work to calm down my heart. Heck. Best of all worlds.

Thanks for your concern and support. It's so good to have friends here at TE. L.

Hi Ladies! My my - 7 pages of posts while I've been visiting the in-laws. You've been busy. I'm, thankfully, in a hotel in Baton Rouge trying to decide which shirt to wear for the interview tomorrow. We spent the last 2 days with the in-laws and had an okay time. FishJr seemed wierded out. We looked at that house. It was totally misrepresented - maybe it was 2400sqft under roof (including the porch, garage, and a some invisible space. It had to be only 1500-1800 sqft. So - totally overpriced. Pretty, but overpriced. And - it was in a quaint little subdivision that looked like something out of a movie. Very manicured. Anyhoo - Mr. Fish calls me from his parents. They got into a huge fight (some of which was about things I said). This seems to happen everytime we come down to visit. Wierd.

So - I'm going into my interview with this chaos on my mind. We'd live an hour away if I got the job, so we could keep our distance. I'm trying to push this out of my mind to focus on my talk. I ran through it tonight and it was too long. So - I started hacking out slides. This is normal for me. Think good thoughts and a clear mind for me tomorrow. Thanks!

I'll catch up on the medical news and tri congrats when I get back home on Wed.

SK, thanks for the tip about the saddle. I've bookmarked it, and will print it out and take it in if this latest foray's a dud. I was wondering about your MS. Is the exercise something that holds it at bay, or minimizes symptoms?

I love the Clif Bloks Cran-Razz. I like the texture, the taste, all of it. I had a package of them with the top cut off in my Bento box for the race yesterday. I may not know how to swim, but I sure know how to make that food available! :p I packed a little pair of scissors in my tri bag just for the purpose of cleanly cutting off the top of the little bitty bag of treats.

I would've liked another bag of Bloks, not sure it would've fit in the bento box with Kiss My Face sunblock stick. I am so glad I brought that, too. It worked as lip balm, and, when I looked down and noticed that the insides of my forearms were turning pink, I was able to smear it all over those, too. It's SPF 30. All while riding hard, mind you! Whoo-hoo! I am such a cyclist! :D
