I think it's very important for your kids that you ride your bike heaps.
1. It makes you a happy. A happy mum is a good thing.
2. What a positive example you're setting for them.
3. It makes you happy!
Yeah, I 'm repetitious, but it's very important.

Thanks V and Im sure it will make me super happy.:D

I think Mr. Fish is counting the days until FishJr starts school (14th). She'll be in 4K - all day. He'll only have Fishfry to contend with. I think the little one is going to miss his sis bigtime!

PP has started having dreams about who her teacher will be (we don't find out til right before school starts). She talks about it a lot and is clearly very excited. I think she's looking forward to being one of the "big kids on campus" in 5th grade this year. I can't believe she goes to middle school next year. Crazy! It goes SO quickly.

V, enjoy your three weeks before you get back to molding young minds. Trek hawk, hang in there, soon someone else (you could only hope someone as wonderful as V) will be molding the young minds of your little guys. ummmm the little spiders in our shed live off the dirt on our mtn bikes...
Redback & whitetail spiders can do whatever they like in my shed...
CWH..I understand about being far away from the main TE gang...However i'm waving at you now! *wave* :D
I had a nice mtn bike ride today on my own. I didn't see a soul (i have a picture to prove i was there though...will post when the man gets back)
What i don't get it this-i (sometimes) come up to a log over but my mind & arms don't want to work together..my legs on the other hand are more than happy to move. It's as if something just doesn't click over...
Rock gardens, & uphill climbs are getting better though.
I'm out again with a friend tomorrow! 35km of fire road, singletrack along with some great uphill climbing!

I'm thinking you probably don't want them poisonous type spiders getting up to too much hanky panky in your shed - only going to lead to more spiders...
I suspect I could be winning in the furthest away poster stakes tonight; I'm in Singapore. :) Just having a couple of nights stop-over on my way to NZ (Dad's 60th is the same day as fish's interview) and the hostel has free internet. Score!
My poor, poor bike has a flat that I didn't notice until just before I left (it wasn't there on Wednesday night!), so she's all lonely in the garage and a bit dirty and needs TLC that isn't going to happen for at least three weeks. :(
I think I need to go to sleep. Got about four very interrupted hours on the plane - better than nothing, but so not enough. There was nobody in the seat right next to me, which was nice, but even with the extra room I couldn't find a possition that didn't make my right leg go numb eventually.

Good morning (or night) TD gang (and the lurkers)! :)
Nanci's doing a 200K today, isn't she?
I was all set and ready to ride this morning. I set out everything last night. Clif bar and all. Then I had a lousy sleep (maybe 2 hours) and woke up (sort of) with a headache. Poo! All I kept dreaming about was the interview seminar. I don't even get too too nervous over seminars - I give them all the time. I just kept picturing a big lecture hall. Yeesh! So - still have the headache. There are worse things - I'm sitting here typing with the fishfry on my lap :) I'm going to try to steal his blanket away today and wash it. It's a bit odiferous. Whew! Reminds me of a time, when darling nephew was about 18 months - 2 years old. His "bunny" (small blanket with a bunny head) needed to be washed. We got it in the washing machine all right, but he saw it going into the dryer. I managed to sneak it away from him while he was playing with his trucks. I've lived through a similar transfer-to-the-dryer event with FishJr when she was about that age. She didn't do the shaking thing though. How sad! We transferred the blanket to the dryer while he was eating breakfast. Strawberry pancakes - good bribery :) It's dry now, but we've been doing so much running around this AM that he hasn't the chance to ask for it. I love they joy on their faces when they get it back!

Nice job Snap! She's all spiffed up! Cute puppy, too!
I received my new shorts today. I didn't have much to spend and had a $25 Amazon certificate, so I ended up getting the Performance Ultra shorts for total outlay of $25. The chamois is really nice - 3D (which I haven't had until now) and super soft material. I don't feel it much just walking around in them, but the design gives major diaper butt. I'm not sure about the material of the shorts. It's not as smooth as I had hoped, but looks like it should wick well. I'll test it in the morning (assuming no headache).

I'm tired...Did the 200k, actually 135 miles, because of the intentional and unintentional bonus miles. I finished 16th out of 42 or more- it was 42 last I heard, but don't know if that counted the RBA who rode with us or anyone who signed in late. I was middle of the pack a lot of the way, did a lot of leapfrogging, rode with a bunch of different twosomes and a couple different packs. At the end, though, it became very evident who was heat-acclimated and who was not. I stopped twice before lunch at 88 miles to drench my hair and down my shirt. Other people got way behind, even then, because they overheated. I took electrolytes, Succeed S! Caps, every 30 minutes by an alarm. At lunch, I took a shower on the beach. I had to ask directions twice, and probably got off course four or five times- never disasterously. RBAs should have to preride the course. This kind of thing doesn't happen with my club...(Cue sheet errors and roads with different names than the sheet says.) It was in the mid-90's, and I heard some people's computers were reading over 100. I didn't catch the rain. The thing that really slowed me down were the overpasses on the Pinellas Trail- but luckily they were short enough that I could stand and minimize the delays. This dropped me out of any packs, though. After lunch, I tried to go fast. The couple big packs were stopping a lot to cool off and taking a long time at official and unofficial stops. I tried not to hang out at the stops. I left the last one alone, ahead of two big packs and several duos. I RACED to the end, the last 10 miles. Half a mile before the end, I thought I saw a rider behind me, and I really flew! They were surprised to see me come in so early. Hmmm, I don't use the AC in my car, my house AC can't keep the house as cool as we want, I take the torts out to graze for an hour or two every night when it is still 85. I don't die riding in that kind of weather. It was too hot to eat effectively, though. I had chicken chow mein for breakfast, and two glasses of grapefruit juice and two cups of coffee. Then one bottle of Endurance Gatorade and water before lunch, and about five cans of Coke, and water after lunch. Sport Beans. Half a Mojo bar. I coudn't choke it down. Grapes and potato chips and two slices of turkey for lunch. That's it. I felt good the whole ride. I got goosebumps about 18 miles before the end, (heatstroke???) but went in a store and poured water on my head and bought a bag of ice and stuffed it everywhere, and that went away. My riding time was 8:11, and the total time was 10:53. 13.5 hour limit. I think this is my fastest 200k ever. I don't know what my average speed is yet, but it was 16.7 for a lot of the morning, till the first hill. 15.0 at lunch. 15.6 the last time I looked before the end. That's pretty good- in a ride that long, even riding 19-21 mph, it takes a long time to change the average speed. The first third had zillions of stops and turns. It was pretty fun.

I had buyer's remorse over a car, too. I had a 1991 Ford Explorer that I put 300k on. I loved that truck. But I couldn't afford a used one, even, when it died, so I got an Isuzu Rodeo. It felt small and fragile and light. Nothing was the same as the Explorer. I missed it so much. Then, after a year and a half, I found a good deal on a 2003 Explorer. I test drove it. And HATED it! All the stuff I'd been pining away for now really bugged me. It felt like a tank. It was too big. I couldn't see out as well. Now I love the Isuzu more. I hope that happens for you...
Nanci! Wow! Great ride report! I am impressed with what you can do in that heat. Rest up.

Nanci - Can't help you with the meal - I've never made that or had it. Here's an unrelated question for you - have you ever tried the Perf. Ultra shorts? I still haven't made it outside in them. I know you're always interested in collecting more data on shorts. From what I can tell, the chamois looks identical to the Shelastic from Sheebeest. Just FYI. Maybe tomorrow morning... I feel like I'm never going to get a ride in!
The kids are playing computer games (learning games). FishJr is trying to teach the little one how to use a mouse. She is being very patient with him. He likes the scroll button and to make the big white arrow whiz across the screen. She keeps telling him "stop, you're making me dizzy". It's quite a comedy in there! He watched her for the longest time today as she was doing her game (Dr. Seuss Kindergarten - very cute) and then he insisted on working on his computer. After I changed the bed myself and put on new sheets, with only one hair, and a new sheet over the down comforter, with no dead spider, and changed all four pillowcases, but still slept on my own four pillows that I brought, yes, then I could sleep pretty well, considering. Nanci - if the posole you bought was canned in salt water, you might want to drain it. I didn't put that part in my recipe. Sorry. The canned posole i buy is usually salt-free.
Keep the heat on low and cook until the pork softens up again. Posole is also good with lamb. But I like pork the best.

oh ya i have to do something with those fish..... .
Know the one.
We went up to the Blueberries farm/orchard to pick a year's supply yesterday. Thought it was a lovely idea till we got stopped at a roadblock by a 19 yo female soldier who said a rocket fell on the town up there. So we said "Well, we are going past there to ___ to pick blueberries" and she let us thru. (Those 70's-80's non-violent-activist-training-weekends paid off again!!)
So we picked 5 kg of blueberries (11 pounds) and 1 kg (2+ pounds) of big blackberries to the background sounds of tank and cannon-fire, with smoke all across the northern horizon from the fire and the fires on both sides of the border.
Just me and the SO in the whole orchard. The trees were just laden. All the different shades of blue and purple with the occasional not-yet-ripe pinks, and greeny yellows
On the way there was no one and nothing on the road.
The apples and plums still on the trees, the grapes (for wine) nearly ready and noone to pick them either. In the fields the wild fig trees are full of fruit and the wild olives, though still bright green and hard as river pebbles, are promising a bumper crop in October . But not a movement - no people, no animals, very few birds.
At the blueberry place the same.
On the way back there was a continuous stream of traffic going east (the opposite direction to us).
Cars full of Reservists going to their Military Meeting-up Points. Groups of men everywhere.
(Note to those of us feminists who tend to see men as a group. When you see so many of them actually in the process of collecting together in one place, before they have got the group-feeling - you see how individual they each are)
Men trying to turn themselves into soldiers at a few days notice - most less than successfully in terms of physique and fashion. Not to mention "operational capability".
Do you laugh or cry?
Both at the same time
Then at 10 pm , after a family dinner and "the news" (15 dead and the injured in the hundreds and that is just on "our" side of the fence for which I have the numbers and some names and faces) I started to make blueberry jam

Not on TE much because am back home in Albany NY with 80-year-old mom in emergency hospital kind of thing. I was trying to entertain her by telling her about this forum---including some of Margo's flora and fauna and from-the-front messages. You know my snake Maizey...she's refused one mouse out of two, three feedings ago, then two of two, then one of one. I am taking her in to be "sexed" tomorrow. This is normal behaviour for a male in breeding season. It's too late to change her name if she _is_ a male. Then I'll have Milly the male pigeon and Maizey the male snake. I must subconsciously prefer female pets.

I went to see my first criterium yesterday - very exciting! I saw the tail end of the Cat 1/2 women's division and then the Pro men's race. They had a 1 km circuit set up downtown and they raced for 55 minutes plus 2 laps. Three guys lapped the entire peleton (peloton?) 1-1/2 times so the verdict was pretty clear early on. There was one crash around a corner and I saw it just before it happened. Some road rash and cracked up bikes for two guys but no one too badly injured. One of the top women was a girl named Leah Goldstein who battled back from a terrible crash last year that left her bedridden and then in a wheelchair for 3 months. Pretty amazing story. Being a newbie cyclist, I've never heard of her but I imagine many of you have. :) She credits her determination to her seven years in the Israel army. Reminded me again of Margo...
Swimmer's Tail - anyone ever heard of that? We took our chocolate lab Gabriel out to the lake to swim and he had a great time. Next day he couldn't sit or move his tail at all. Took him into the vet and learned about swimmer's tail. Apparently Labs use their tail as a rudder and he was experiencing the same pain I get when I do a long ride. Poor guy...
Nanci - well done on your 200 km! I so want to try that someday. I did my first metric on the road bike a couple of days ago and can't imagine doubling that in one day. Is it fairly flat where you ride? Maybe I could do it if it was flatter. This trip was all hills and my legs still hurt two days later. Ah, but it's a good hurt.. :)
I am learning to enjoy white wine. Only trying the sweeter stuff - Erhenfelser, Gwurtztraminer (totally guessed on the spelling), and a sweet Reisling. Yummy to have something cooler to drink on those hot afternoons.

i've heard of that. i've known labs that have had their tail docked because they had a problem with that and/or hitting it against things.
i'm glad my big dog has her tail docked just because of the damage she could do if she had a whole tail. i hear her numb thumping and i can just imagin. though when i first got her i thought she was born with a small tail till i researched it bc she kept biting at it. i wasn't to keen on it at first, seemed kinda cruel to me. it doesn't seem to bother her now and as long as she's happy i'm happy.

I had a golden retriever (Allie) that would regularly clear the coffee table of it's contents with her tail. Both of my goldens would wag their tails so hard they're buts would wiggle all over the place. My black lab/golden mix wags his in a circle when he gets excited.

Greetings and love to all--
Margo, I shared your post with my sister, who lived in Israel for 15 years. I told her your DP was a refusnik, and she said, "Oh, good man!" She's been part of a group that hosted Israeli refusniks on a speaking tour in the US. As a consequence of that, and of articles she writes, she's become persona-non-grata for many at her synagogue. If you'd like, I can PM you links to some of her articles about Israel/Palestine.
Salsa, hope your mom is doing better, and glad that TE can have a little part in keeping her mind busy.
Nanci--now I'm curious to know what Mazie turns out to be! Funny about genders, right? I can't imagine Ariel being a boy or Isaac being a girl, but when they were babies, what if someone told me they were the opposite?
Decent night on call, and now, to nap. L.

our rotts both have their tails docked. I can't imagine the damage they would do with tails. Our third dog is a spare parts dog (she looks like she was made out of spare parts). When we first got her she was severely traumatized and severely malnourished (less than half of her current weight). One night, about a month after she joined our family we hear this thumping sound. We start ripping the house apart trying to find the source of the sound. It was mamie wagging her tail against the wood floors.
Margo, I cannot imagine what it is like living in your country right now. I have friends there and worry about them all the time.

No posts last night??? That's odd.
I finally had the opportunity to try out the new shorts this morning! Yippee! Wow there was a lot of traffic out there today. Anyhoo - I like the shorts! They're not perfect, but they are comfy and better than what I had before :)
I have switched from Allegra to Clarinex for my skin sensitivity issues. Last night was the first night on the Clarinex - woo was I dizzy! I'm happy to say that I was not dizzy today and felt so much more alert. The Allegra was making me really zoned out.
Today - I go get my eyes checked and get new contacts :)
Lise - how did the shift go? Any new babies?
I know...a lull in Thread Drift!
No new babies for me on that shift. I am glad to say that I got to sleep from 11:30 to 3 AM, got paged by two patients, told one to come to the hospital, and then slept again until she got there. It makes such a difference to get > 2 hr sleep.
The shift before that--Saturday--there was a beautiful birth of a little girl whose parents are Sudanese. We were in our Alternative Birth Center, so she delivered on a queen-sized bed, with me kneeling next to her on the bed. As soon as the baby was out and crying loudly, the dad jumped up, came around the side of the bed, threw his arms around me, started kissing my cheek, and saying THANK YOU! THANK YOU! It was so sweet. To see a dad so thrilled with the birth of his daughter. I've delivered over 600 babies--I've never been hugged and kissed like that by the dad! :D I was standing there with a sterile gown and gloves on, feeling very midwestern and stiff! After all the "protective gear" was off, I gave him, the mom, and their friend big hugs as well. Who knew? The Sudanese are huggers! What a blessing. Every now and then I get to be part of a birth like that. Helps me remember how much I love my job.

Lise, I have a kind of controversial question for you. If people prefer, I will delete this off of thread drift.
I assume as a midwife you get the more "alternative" parents rather than the straight and narrow types. What are the circumcision stats among your clientel? I was amazed at the difference in numbers between when I lived in Evanston and when we moved just 10 minutes north.

The rate is low, but not because they're "alternative", but rather because we have a high proportion of Hispanic patients, who generally don't circ their babies. Not the answer you expected, right?! Our practice is the second oldest CNM midwifery practice in the city (oldest is at Cook County Hospital). When the practice started, ~ 30 years ago, it was mostly privately insured couples looking for the "alternative" midwifery experience. Our practice has evolved, and the patient mix is about 60% public aid clinics, 5-10% HMO, and the rest our "private" clinic. Some of the women from the public and HMO clinics are there because they sought us out, but many just walked in the door because that's what their insurance covers. They're happy with the midwifery care (if they don't want to see midwives, we refer them to our docs' clinic), but they didn't necessarily "choose" us for our philosophy. The clinic where I see patients is largely Hispanic, with a fair number of African immigrants, and the occasional American-born of various ethnicities.
If you'd like to discuss the specific question further, let's PM, OK? L.
Here's the deal--last Thursday I noticed that I was having this wierd feeling in my chest, put my fingers on my pulse, and realized that the wierd feeling was my heart skipping beats. No pain, no shortness of breath, but uncomfortable, and irregular. Called the doc's office, am going in today for an EKG and whatever else she wants to do. I've laid off the training for the most part--I did run 3.5 miles Sat, and felt fine.
I'm just trying to act like a grownup instead of a rebellious kid. I want to ride my bike to the doc's, have her say, "It's all in your head" or "It's a benign arrythmia, you're fine", and then go out for a long ride. I have a tri in 11 days, and I'm not training this week. So what! If something's wrong, it's smart to wait and see, and then follow the advice of my doc. Sheesh. I am the worst patient.
Sooo...I'm going to drive to the doc's. Then I can go by the LBS, and buy a bike stand with my birthday gift certificates! I'm also going to get the Celeste water bottle cages to match my beauteous Bianchi. I thought it was silly to get matching cages when I got the bike...and I've been dreaming of them ever since! I saw a picture of a Bianchi with the celeste cages in mimitabby's RSVP pix, and made up my mind. :D If there's time after that, and I've been cleared by my doc, I'll get a ride in.
Of course I'll let you know what the doc says. L.

Lise, let us know as soon as you hear anything!!
I'm sort of interested in the circ discussion, too. One of the procedures done in my department requires catheterization. New residents are surprised when I tell them girls are easier than boys. Many boys (of all types) are not circumsized these days, and often the foreskin can't be peeled back far enough for the radiologist to see the hole, so it's a blind poking around till he gets lucky. (Then, once the tube is in, you're still not home free because upset little boys can clamp down and prevent the catheter from advancing into the bladder! Little girls can't do that.)
I didn't take Maizey in to be sexed, because she seemed upset when I put her in a pillowcase to take her in to work, where she would have had to wait all day. I'll just take her on a day off. I studied her tail/body junction last night, and I still think she's a she.
But- I have this friend who has a pair of pigeons. The female had always laid two eggs, (replaced with wooden eggs as population control) but this time around laid four. The friend was asking if she should replace all four, or only leave two wooden eggs. My other friend Julie pointed out that the pair was actually two females- who would have thought of that?? (What's that saying doctors have about looking for horses when they hear hoofbeats, not zebras??)
We ate the poleno or whatever it was last night. Ok, but either I won't make it again or will try with different chili powder.
Grilling pork loin tonight.
I tried taking pics of Maizey and a measuring tape last night so I could try out the snake measuring software. So I'm trying to get her to hold still, and not overlap herself, kind of herding her into position with my bare foot, and BF starts screaming at me to stop kicking the snake, (AS IF!!!) and when I finally was done, she rewarded me by taking a crap right in the middle of the living room carpet...And no, it doesn't pick up nicely with a spoon like bird poo...
I rode the motorcycle in a skirt last night- unplanned errand running after work. It stayed down.

Lise, glad you are being a grown-up. I never manage to pull that off. Update as asap.
MP - you can't bike so you're gonna run a marathon. I can't say that is a direction my brain would ever go. Have a great trip.
OK: Here's what we know. The EKG showed that my heart is skipping beats. Doh! I knew that! :p It's premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), and most likely benign. She drew some blood (CBC for anemia, electrolytes, thyroid panel), and ordered an Echocardiogram. The soonest I can get that done is next Tuesday.
My doc speculates this is a peri-menopause thing, with hormonal shifts. It's funny; I feel considerably younger and stronger than I did at 40. I've suppressed my periods with the Nuva ring for 3 years, as treatment for the endometriosis. So I don't even think much about my hormones these days! I do get hot flashes sometimes--just annoying. So now PVCs? It's uncomfortable, but not dangerous. Unless the blood work and echo show otherwise.
Upshot: I can train and race. YEA! I should cut back on caffeine. OK, if I have to. If it will ease this uncomfortable feeling when my heart skips beats, then OK. Less coffee and diet Coke it is.
To celebrate the fact that I will appearantly live to fight another day, I went to the LBS and bought the Celeste bottle cages, some new gloves, and ordered a Terry Zero X to try out. That should be in Thurs, so I'll get in some riding before the tri, and see if I like it.
....................
MP--why is it you can hike and run, but not bike? Is it the falling factor? I'm such a clutz on my own two feet that I fall more when running than biking (so far, knock wood). I guess a fall off the bike could be much more catastrophic in terms of bleeding. Your vacation sounds great.
....................
I'm thinking of going up to cheer for IM Wisconsin in Madison, 9/10. It's about a 3 hr drive. I was thinking of vounteering, but they want you there for orientation meetings the week before (of course), and I'm not going to make that trip twice in one week! I dated someone who lived up there for 18 months, years ago. What a pain in the butt that drive was. 'Specially cuz the relationship was largely a pain in the butt, too! Interspersed, of course, with moments of joy...nothing like intermittant reinforcement, eh?

I'm also eating semi-sweet chocolate chips to celebrate my benign heart arrythmia. Hmmm...I could really get a lot of "celebrating" in, couldn't I?!? I decided ~for the moment~ against the bike stand. They're huge! I don't have that kind of room in the communal basement. For the time being, I'll turn the bike over on a tarp, to protect the seat and handle bars...oh, wait, I've got the aero bars, crud, that may not work. Hmmmm. Oh, and the bike stand is more expensive than I imagined. If I really like the Zero X, there's the outlay of money. If I don't, I'll stick with the Serfas saddle and rethink the bike stand. The gift certs covered the cages and gloves :D , and a little over half of the saddle. YAY!

Lise, glad it sounds fairly minor. I swear I was getting heart issues when I was on BC pills. Since I was constantly struggling to find one with the right balance of chemicals, I just decided to try it without. So much better! No more headaches pre-flow, no dizziness/nausea episodes, no weird heart beats, etc. I also think my nightsweats are better.

Lise - glad to hear it wasn't anything worse and that you can still train and race! That must be a big relief.
Reducing caffeine intake is not a bad thing. Did you ever do the Daphnia experiment in biology class in college - you know - feed daphnia caffeine and watch the little things just about explode. Lovely image - sorry. That was enough to make me cut back, though. Then my peripheral vision got wiggly, then I started trying to have a baby and cut out the caffeine all together. Now if I drink a big cup of coffee (I can have small cups) - my heart feels like it's going about 100 mph. Not the best feeling.
Enjoy your new bottle holders. You must post a pic when you get them installed!
So - when do you get the other test results back? Perimenopause...that's lousy.

Wow, Lise, good news I guess on the PVC thing. I hope it is not something that will get worse. Having an echo is weird. Like an ultrasound for pregnancy - but there's no baby in there!!?? It hurt when the super stern woman was squishing my boob to get the angle right.
And you're right on doing the marathon versus cycling - it is the falling factor. A fall on the bike could be catastrophic, and I do fall on the bike. If I fall running, I will bleed more than other folks, but my chances of actually dying are not that much higher. Weighing risks. And I will mostly walk this marathon. I walked one of my three previous marathons. It's not so bad.

I was just reading a post from Jenny's Sister about how she hopes the family will be at the memorial ride, but it is hard for them to go there after the time spent up there searching. I can understand that. In Florida, there are official (with DOT signs) and unofficial roadside shrines for where people have died in traffic accidents. It makes me wonder why it is important for some families to memorialize the actual site where the person was last alive. You see the sites all over down here- fresh flowers, white crosses, photo albums...When I lived in MN, people didn't do that. But in Black Hills South Dakota, you'd see signs (official) on the side of the road at the scenes of fatalities, and in FLorida the signs actually have the person's name printed on them.
Just what I'm thinking about.
Do you have Dish Network? Is it showing now? I swear the software goes screwy when it downloads here. Weird things happen.
Switch to Direct TV if you can - O man - they have the *best* customer service. When we were having freaky problems with our box (it kept deleting all of our channels off of the recieved list every couple of weeks) not only did I get a live customer service person, but when she couldn't figure out what was wrong she connected me with the enigineers who actually program the thing. I've never had that happen before and they actually fixed the problem.

Do you have Dish Network? Is it showing now? I swear the software goes screwy when it downloads here. Weird things happen.
our dish network REALLY goes screwy here. then again we are so far away we have 6 foot dishes that are almost pointed to the ground. at least we have tv.
You have to read the whole thread. It's like hazing.
i read the whole thing and got caught up, ok so almost the whole thing, and did more scanning then reading. does that still count? was i hazed properly?

Thanks, I'll remember that. I started shopping around when it appeared that Dish wasn't going to get OLN back but then they brought it back in the nick of time.
I may still go look at rates. I hate the channel packaging. We have to pay for a bagillion channels when we use about 20. OLN, Cartoon, SciFi, etc., gotta have those.
Dish didn't work for almost a year after the installation. They replaced everything but the dish itself. They sent out a supervisor to look at everything. Still had problems. Bubba finally got up on the roof himself and pointed the dish. Voila. Amazing how actually applying the rules of azimuth, altitude and magnetic north makes a difference. Buncha of idiots that can't use a basic compass.
Of course, I was petrified the entire time because our roof has a steep pitch and I hate having loved ones up there.

Only time we ever used a dish was on our RV (rented) in France when we were trying to watch the Tour on TV while waiting for the Tour to come by. We finally had to ask these old Belgian firefighters whom we befriended to help us. The book was pretty confusing. And there was the language barrier. And the pastis. All of which made climbing on the roof of the RV and getting the signal right a little confusing at first. Once we got the system "down" (knowing which channel and setting to be on was key) it got much easier to put it up there every time we stopped the car.
People have their sat TVs facing out of their RVs there, so if you don't have an RV, you can just walk by and watch on someone else's TV. It is all very social and fun. The year before we didn't have a RV/TV, and we'd just seen the tour go by and walked back down the hill to watch on someone else's RV-TV just in time to see the infamous Beloki crash. Having just seen them live 10 minutes before that was really chilling.

Some friends who went to the Tour last year brought back the directions for a TV they bought and could never get to work. Something had obviously been lost in the translation because it kept talking about a cowgirl. That was only the start of the list of "huh?" items.

Yeah - I know what you mean - the hubby installed our dish. We had our Talkabouts out and he was up on the roof (he's afraid of heights too) and I was down watching for the
signal ...nothing....nothing...hailstorm!!!....nothing... then there it was!- so I started shouting stop! stop! into the radio. Poor guy - he's been loosening the dish to turn it some when it slipped down and he had to catch it and that was the exact right point to get a good signal. So there he is up on the roof in the hail, hanging on to the dish so that it doesn't move and trying to figure out how he's going to tighten it down without messing it up and answer me as I'm down there telling him to stop its perfect.

I have a mental image of my dog (pictured here) sitting at the computer, looking intently at the screen, looking down at his credit card, carefully typing in the numbers... as he orders stuff online.
"Chili - put down my credit card! Get your own."
It's a good thing it's not toooo easy to buy stuff on line, or I'd have stuff arriving from all over that Isaac that cat ordered when he felt it necessary to sleep on the keyboard.
Love the dialectacizer. Can I find one that translates my (very good) Spanish into Spanish that my patients from the highlands of Ecuador can understand? One day I walked in the room and said, "Buenas tardes, yo soy Lise, la partera." The little Ecuadoran woman tapped herself on the chest and replied, "NO SPEEK ENGLEES!" I said, (in Spanish), "But I'm speaking Spanish!" She replied, "NO ENGLEES!" Sigh.

Isaac is so named because I got him from a shelter when I thought Ariel had gone missing forever. I wanted joy back in my life, so I named him for laughter. The day after I brought him home, a neighbor found Ariel (whose name means Lion of God). Poor little beast was down 20% of her body weight and was terrified. She'd run out the door one day when I was bringing in laundry. I didn't notice she was gone until the next morning, because she can be (or was) a pretty secretive cat. Can't even tell you how miserable I was with her gone. She was gone for 7 days. I went out looking for her morning and night...put up signs all over the neighborhood...and of course she was found under the bushes of a neighbor's house. Fortunately she had a collar and tag on.
She was not thrilled to find Isaac in her home! Took about 6 months before she could look at him without hissing. They're best buddies now, 14 years later.

Chick - Snap is right. You could be the captain - bears and all. I seem to have magnetic abilities - attracting cars.
Lise - are you going to report the problems today to your doctor. It might help put the puzzle pieces together. Take it easy!
Yeah, yeah...blech. It is impossible to say "when this started" because I've had similar feelings before, just attributed it to other things, like gallstones, heat, fatigue. The doc said she thought it was benign, and probably due to hormonal changes of peri-menopause. I'm going to do some searching in the medical literature about PVCs/menopause/athletes. It is wierd to see the EKG. I'm no expert, but I know what normal looks like. So mine looks like ... normal, normal, normal, wiggley!, normal, normal... I want to smack myself in the chest like the old Marcus Welby episode.
Kind of makes me feel a bit better about not feeling great in the chest when I run--if my heart's skipping all those beats, how could I feel good? I'm still doing the Pleasant Prairie Tri (unless the echo shows I shouldn't for some reason), but I'm going to take it easier on the run. Not be ashamed if I can't run the whole thing. I suck at the swim--that's always just survive and get out of the water--I love the bike, so no problem there--and, well, if I can't run much, I can't run much. We shall see. I'm praying for relatively cool weather that weekend. That will help.
........................
Ironically, I think "Team Danger" came about because various members would be ruled out from donating bone marrow, or put on some "maybe, maybe not" list. Mine was gallstones at the time. Now we can add Wiggley! heartrate to my qualifications as a Team Danger member. I'm not even going near those Team Emboli girls. They might be recruiting. :p

Lise, what's a PVC?
Lise, what's a PVC?
Ah, sorry. Premature Ventricular Contraction.
From my old anatomy text: "A form of arrhythmia which arises when a small region of the heart becomes more excitable than normal, causing an occasional abnormal impulse to be generated between normal impulses. The region from which the abnormal impulse is generated is called an ectopic focus...ectopic foci may be caused by emotional stress, excessive intake of stimulants such as caffeine or nicotine, lack of sleep, and local ischemic areas of cardiac muscle."
Doesn't say anything about peri-menopause, but the book was published in 1984... I've got some research to do in the current literature.
So...let's review. Emotional stress? Check. Blame that stupid guy from April. :p Excessive intake of caffeine? Well, some intake, at least. No nicotine, of course. Lack of sleep? Well, duh! I'm a midwife! Ischemic areas of cardiac muscle? I certainly hope not. I'd think that would be painful. The echocardiogram next Tuesday is an ultrasound of the heart muscle. It will show if there are any structural reasons for this.
I am used to just pushing through things--we have a saying in midwifery, "You can do anything for 12 hours." (Most of us have worked both 24 and 12 hour shifts. 12 is better.) But...not really. As SK and MP know, you can't control some things. Heck, I know this from my endometriosis and infertility. But my heart? You kind of count on that to just keep steady on. I'll keep you guys (and yes, my doc, too!) posted. Thanks for your loving concern. L.

I just did a search, and appearantly they're called VPBs (ventricular premature beats) nowadays. (You know health care. Gotta change up the abbreviations every so often  ) I found a good patient ed handout...and...can't figure out how to attach it here. Anyways, basically said what my anatomy text said. Not dangerous unless you have a weak heart muscle, can be annoying. My doc said that exercise can *help* them, so keep on. They certainly are not *helping* me exercise!
I wonder if this is a consequence of 13 years of the crazy life in midwifery...18 years in obstetrics (5 as a nurse before becoming a midwife). Too many jolts of adrenaline to the heart.

So I'm reading about this foiled terror plot in the UK, and have to laugh at the pictures of Heathrow on CNN.com and the "chaos". Has anyone ever flown out of Heathrow? It always looks like that. Nothing travels smoothly or quickly through there. CDG in Paris is worse. Those are probably stock photos. :D
I also have problems with the "death on an unimaginable scale" comment. 20 planes, 300 people each on average is 6000. Yes that's 6000 too many. But I surely think if you read a little history of countries in, say, Africa you can imagine more than 6000. I'm sure more than 6000 people have been killed in Iraq.

At least if she gets stranded in Paris at CDG, she could take a train into Germany. (she'll only be a couple hundred miles from where she's going)
I'm thinking today will be a very safe day to fly, but a very slow one. As long as she can get all her connections into France it should work out. It's a British plane into Germany. That'll probably be very late.
I'll worry all day anyway.
Ooh! Ooh! Nanci! I meant to tell you! On my walk from the clinic to the car yesterday, I saw one very dead sparrow in the grass, and one...dead? little black bird in the street next to my car. As I approached, his wing twitched, and I saw that his eyes were open. He was lying on his belly, with both wings spread out. I didn't see any obvious trauma. I turned to the car to look for something flat to scoop him up and put him on the grass, and...he flew away! Just resting? I thought maybe some bigger bird had attacked him and he fell...I know so little about bird ways. I was glad he could fly away, and I thought, "I must tell Nanci".

Well, Lise, I guess this PVC thing is being managed/investigated okay - but the whole chest pain business really concerned me. It's one thing to have your heart do some wonky things - but when it causes pain, that seems a bit odd.
I have finally traced the cause of my chest pain (other than the emboli) - it is Tuesday spin class with BEN. Any other spin class I have been fine with really bringing the effort level down, as I suspected that it was a high HR that led to chest pain the following day. Well, with Ben's spin class it is really hard to bring the level down. I know it's self-directed, etc. but he's just super intense and really motivating. SO I either have to skip Tuesdays or have a little chat with him explaining my bad self and why I won't be sweating as much.

I had a nice bike to work .... right up to the last block with a verbal encounter with a snotty whiner of a jaywalking pedestrian.
So my good mood is broken, till I log onto TE :p There now, I feel better. Now I'll get to work and Mallot, have a chat but you don't have to proove anything to anyone, spin your own spin.

I just read that too - about the milk - I read that if you're taking milk for your baby you have to have someone who will sample it.
Would I fly to London today?? NO!!! but then I won't fly anyday if I don't have to - I hate, hate, hate to fly - not because of terrorist incidents but because of crashing  - I'm abdolutely phobic - so much so that my husband and I are discussing a transatlantic cruise for the next time we go back to the states :D
I was just reading the August copy of National Geographic and they have an interesting article on Ways to Go. Its stats on what holds the greatest chance of ending your life (macabre I know). Well Bicycling accidents are in there but they dont really rate much higher than Air/space accident. Here are a few of the stats.
Bicycling accident 1 in 4,919
Air/space 1 in 5,134
Pedestrian accident 1 in 626 (beware crossing the street)
Lightning 1 in 79,746
Falling 1 in 218
Fireworks discharge 1 in 340,733 (your pretty safe on the 4th of July)
Drowning 1 in 1,008
This little stat was at the top of the article "Total odds of dying, any cause 1 in 1"
Check the article out - some of the stats did suprise me.:)

Wahoo! That's great! Sometimes it's the little things that make us happy...
Well, Lise, I guess this PVC thing is being managed/investigated okay - but the whole chest pain business really concerned me. It's one thing to have your heart do some wonky things - but when it causes pain, that seems a bit odd.No, no pain. Just really uncomfortable when it happens. There has been pain in the past, which I figured was a gallstone passing.
When I had my worst gallstone attack, I was sweating, shaking, in pain, couldn't breathe, of course I thought heart attack. A friend takes me to the ER, they slap a pulse oxygen monitor on me, it reads 100%, they take it off and I sit in a plastic chair for 3 hr waiting to be seen! Well, they were right. It wasn't my heart. That was '02.
This thing--18 skipped beats in 60 seconds--is really annoying and uncomfortable. We'll see what the echo shows. If that's OK, I'll do the tri, see how I feel. I've signed up for a 1/2 marathon in October, too. A lot of people get these. I think I'll do a search on a runners' site for any articles about what might help.
Coming off the caffeine I feel pretty sluggish. I had 1/2 cup this morning in hopes of avoiding that sudden withdrawl headache.

But, but, Team Danger sounds so...interesting! Daring! Vague menacing even!

I must confess I have a brood of feral cats living in my backyard. It started with me innocently feeding one, who decided the living was good here and had three babies a year ago June. One of which we didn't catch in time. She managed to have two babies this past April, for a total of 6 girl kitties, 5 that have been neutered.
We bought a trap and have been neutering like crazy since January. Well, we're not doing the neutering... a local vet is...
We had a bunch of boy kitties move in. If they got caught in the trap, they got done. Only one of them has continued to hang around. He won't let me near him. I fear the others are no longer with us...
The six females will all let me touch them to various degrees. I still need to catch the current mama. Her babies have been neutered this week, but she refuses to go in the darn trap. Fortunately, she's one I can pick up if I'm quick. I may just have to pick her up and stuff her in the trap.

I think the girls are happy because they get left alone. And I think being a feral cat mum is hard work. The current mum is so skinny, even though I feed her. They like the free food and water. It's hot here, 90s most days through the summer, so the water sometimes is gone before the food!

Veronica, how did you start trapping? Do you use a "have a heart" trap? Where do the cats recover from the surgery?
We've got a whole pile of feral kitties living right by my apartment building. Last year, there were maybe three, two orange and one spotted, but now there is a whole family of skinny, shaggy orange cats and another of cow-spot cats (some conspicuously orange.) I haven't been able to spot any kittens, but they've obviously had some. Something probably needs to be done about this.
Sometimes they fight in the parking lot, and my (indoor only) cats rush to the window all confused, because there are a) other cats than them in the world, and b) cats that appear to be outdoors...
Veronica
08-10-2006, 04:46 PM
We bought a trap at Orchard. I put canned cat food in and one of them walks in and sets it off.
The boys recover quite quickly from the surgery. The girls I leave in the trap in the garage at night to recover. The vet usually does them around 3 PM, so by morning they are ready to go. They use the stitches that absorb I guess. All the girls have recovered nicely.

I stopped in at a new store on the way home because a few days ago I'd gone in there looking for something they didn't have, but I, without my purse, spotted a bottle of Snoqualmie Naked Riesling. Organic. I've been fantasizing about it ever since. Unfortunately, I also spotted a Zinfandel Ice Wine and an Orange Muscat, both half bottles, both from Renwood. Then I had to LEAVE THE STORE!!! That was 2/3 of that Zero X I want to try...And unfortunately, I'll probably just hoard the Zin, since it is far too precious to drink...

When were you in France? DH and I are hoping to go to France next summer because he's always wanted to do parts of the TDF route. We want to travel fairly inexpensively but not uncomfortably. I'd love to get any feedback / suggestions etc. Did you rent bikes? Now that I've been biking for a whopping 5 months, I am hoping that I'll be up for doing some riding there as well by next summer. :D Feel free to PM me if you have any advice.

Kelownagirl -
You knew where to find me - eh?
We were in France 2 years in a row when we were really living above our means... I have so much to tell. It was AMAZING. Highly recommended. I will PM you with more. But let me know what your priorities are - riding, seeing the tour, where do you want to be, etc.?
In 2003 we went with Backroads - super epic bike riding trip with deluxe accommodations. DH brought his bike and I used theirs. That's when I did Alpe d'Huez. Yes, all of it. We also rode Ventoux, the Izoard, Galibier and Lautaret. And some great rolly stuff between Gap and Provence.
In 2004 we rented an RV and brought the kid and camped on the sides of roads. Also epic in a very different way which involved drinking pastis with BElgians and emptying poop tanks. We were going to bring bikes and the tandem (for the PP) but ended up deciding against bikes. Probably wise.
We are actually hoping to go next year. Maybe rent a house to use as a base of operations with DH's family. MWBR.

Thanks for getting back to me. :) Erik went to Europe years ago but I've never been. I actually don't even know enough to know what part I want to focus on but Erik thinks we'll focus on the southern part mostly. We'll be in France for about 2 weeks in July (will probably spend at least a couple of days in London and 4-5 days in Denmark visiting his family.) We likely won't do any organized bike tours - it would be nice but I don't think we can afford it. We want to see at least part of the Tour, and then rent bikes and ride, probably out-and-back trips from whatever town we happen to be in. Erik definitely wants to do one of the hard cimbs - maybe I will try too, who knows. We want to stay in B&B's, hostels, maybe rent something for a short term, whatever... but not 5 star hotels :) We're just starting to do some planning so I'm not even sure what to ask at this point. However, I don't want you to have to type tons and tons. I can probably tell you more about what we envision doing and you can perhaps point me in the right direction? Thanks!!
