Well, Fish, maybe you are moving, right? What's the latest on the job? Wasn't someone else going to call you (when you're here)?
My interview is Aug 22. I'm all set up and ready to go. I have my itinerary and everything. I still need to finish my presentation. I'll likely be working on that the night before. Blasted PowerPoint! When we used to use actual slides, there wasn't any way to change them at the last minute. I will probably hear something about whether or not I got the job while I'm in SF. The other candidates (2) will have their interviews by the end of August.

Peaches are good.
I'm cutting soda out of life again.
V.
I had a peach yesterday. No soda for me. Stopped when I was pregnant with FishJr and never went back. Every once in a while I drink some of Mr. Fish's Coke. Rarely.
Veronica

I'll go for like a month, not drinking any. Then I'll buy some more. I drink Hanson's usually, an organic soda, I think.
It's just an easy place to cut calories.

V - nope, this is the bee job in Baton Rouge. Congress decided to not fund any new positions in Maine for FY07. It looks like it's going to take a couple of years and maybe an administration/party change before they get enough money. I may lose my mind if I have to stay here for 3 more years or more. I'm pretty sure Mr. Fish will. Baton Rouge puts us about 1hr from my in-laws  which is great for the fishlets!

Mr. Fish gets headaches from diet soda, too. It's a reaction to aspartame (nutrasweet).

Hey - where are Lise and Nanci?
Nanci
08-11-2006, 06:13 PM
Oooh, sugared pop sucks!!! Diet Coke!!
I made pork tenderloin, in jerk sauce, on the grill, and it was _perfect_. With onion roasted potatoes. With a bottom-shelf but still delicious Zin. I _did_ snuggle up to the expensive Ice Zin for a few minutes, though. Then put it back in the wine attic. I read on the Vineyard's website that that bottle I bought last night for $22 is MSRP $40. Should I go back and get the other bottle of it??? Or the 90 point-rated Orange Muscat for $14??? I love wine.
Tomorrow is my grandson's second birthday. I hate it that my daughter can't (won't) quit smoking. I had a pt this week who had tongue, larnyx and lung cancer, with breast mets. She likely won't live till her daughter's wedding in June. She's freakin' crying about it, right in the middle of her exam. I told Kelly about that, but of course, she's "trying." She can't quit when she has a child at home. Quitting gives her a headache. It makes her nauseous. (I pointed out that chemo would make her nauseous, too...) Whatever.
The Brooks just doesn't do anything for me. I borrowed my friend's Team Pro S (women-specific, which means obscenely short in the nose and pretty wide, too...) and I just didn't feel the love. So that's on the back burner and I am still pining away for the Terry Zero X.
I wish the bee job was in Florida.
Of course I have my long-lost friend (co-worker who has recently moved back to town after a 3 year absence.) She's wilder than ever. I just want to go home and go to bed. At bike (motorcycle) night last night, we set her up with a guy eight years her junior and ditched her. She pinched him in the nipple. I...let's just say, that she hasn't matured much in the last three years...(32)
Her six-year-old made a hula-hoop skirt for BF's beer, which he kindly put on it and took around and showed to everyone.
Austin Powers: Goldmember is on in the background. BF has gone to bed at 8:30.
Work today sucked- wait, need refill. I'm out of cheap Zin and on to BF's unattended Florida Muscadine Red. Very sweet. "Foxy," they call it. The only grape that actually smells like grape.
Man, was that perfect timing: I just caught Dr. Evil and Mini Me doing the music video "It's a Hard Luck Life." I am in love with Dr. Evil, and Scott Evil.
I can't wait to ride my bike tomorrow. We're starting at Conestoga's, the tiny-town steak restaurant, at 8Am, then returning after 40 or so miles for lunch. I love club rides that include a lunch. Otherwise, why bother??
I went psycho at my student yesterday. Not the perfect Napoleon Dynamite, but the next one. Josh. I wanted him to put away supplies, and he whines, "But I don't know where they go..." Well, josh, perhaps, if you did a little exploring in the rooms you are actually supposed to be working in, you might discover the mysteries of where stuff we use every day goes.
He was a lot better today. I even yelled his name once and made him jump. Some of them are perfect- like working with another tech. Others either take a lot of yelling at, or I just give up and let them go, and then, a year later, when they are applying for a job...
I won a major battle of wills at the hosp today. I'm not sure about how this affects pt care. Some service, say surgery or trauma, tries to push off a task on my radiologists that they could just as well do, up on the floor, with no radiation exposure. Because they are too lazy or scared or incompetent to do it themselves. Luckily, I threw a fit, a majot fit, in July, and my attending (permanently employed, not residents) radiogists backed me up on it. They come up with a million lame excuses, but the bottom line is, if you don't follow the protocol, you are wasting your/our time. So, while they are trying to bully us into doing the thing, (placing a feeding tube) they are _not_ doing it themselves. Their pt suffers. Sure, they could all come down to me. But- the nurses/interns are just being lazy, at the cost of a permanent radiation dose to the pt, not to mention me and the radiologist. Why are they like that??
Um, this might be enough thread drift for me for the moment- (wait, need refill of Vintner's Red)-
Mmm, it goes so well with crunchy peanut butter. I am so far off the diet wagon it isn't even funny.
I should have gone to school for being a plumber- that is what I -----------tested for, can't think of the word, what you'd be good at.
My kitchen sink leaks. I can't get the faucet tight enough. I can't get in there. My spare toilet leaks. My bathtub leaks in two places. My outside faucet had a bad frost plug, so it leaks. Oh, the second sink in the master bath leaks. WHY does it all LEAK???
Apptitude, that is the word I was looking for.
Beta, have you caught up yet?
Goodnight.

Nanci - love your mind wanderings. :)
And OMG you have a grandchild?!?! You do NOT look old enough to have grandchildren. Nov 18, 19?? (That's my youngest daughter's b-day too btw.)
I guess I could have some too, technically, (thankfully the girls are not considering having kids yet..) but I like to pretend I only have my 8 year old son and am still in my 30's... :)
I have not ridden my bike since the 100 k last saturday. Took me 3-4 days before I even felt like riding, but I've been a busy girl shovelling dirt, planting a couple hundred bucks worth of perennials, and building a lovely stone wall in my semi-finished backyard. We will spend the next two days hauling stone. At least O won't have to do my weights this weekend. :) I'm so glad the weather has cooled a bit - this would NOT be fun in 100+ temps...
I put on two batches of wine yesterday - one is a Cab Sauv which won't be drinkable for at least a year, and the other is a gwurtztraminer, however you spell that, which we can drink 6 weeks from now. I prefer "boughten" wine but it's nice to have the homebrew for back up. The cab sauv is actually really good.
Back to hauling rock...

I need some action. DPITA is literally on the other side of the planet. This sucks.
Diet soda makes me sick to my stomach.
Beer is my friend. Wine is nice, but beer is friendlier.
I'm reading Greg Bear's "Darwin" books. Dang, I wish I'd stuck with my original plan to be a mad scientist. Mad healthcare worker doesn't cut it. Mad librarian might.
My nose ring insists on sitting in the front of my nose, intead of up the nasal passage. cool, if that's where it wants to be, so be it. But I've gotta get it rebent so it won't stick up above my skin. Folks keep saying my ring is coming out. (nope, stem is just too long for the way the hook likes to sit.)
Impressed my young pot-head neuveau-hippie neighbors tonight, as I was sitting on my porch in my rocking chair reading a Darwin book smoking a pipe and drinking a huge beer. One of 'em said I looked "very continental".
(don't look at me like that... I only smoke 3 or 4 times a year and my pipe tabacco is so old there's probably no nicotine left. yeah. Besides, it's better for me than the Dunhill red box cigarettes I used to smoke. I still dream about them...... sigh.)
I am here, I am here, I am heeerrrreee!
Nice to be missed.
Well. Let's see. First I was working for a living and being aggravated out of my skull by this one staff member my co-worker calls "la diablita"....then that was over, and I went to the Sox game!
Now, I'm a Cubs fan from way back. It's genetic. If anybody knows Chicago, you know you're either North or you're South side, you're either a Cubs or you're a Sox fan. For example, a t-shirt tonight said, "Friends don't let friends be Cubs fans". You get the point. I felt like a foreign exchange student.
However. Free tix, friends. Elvis night. OMG. I have been corrupted.
1. Parachuting Elvises from the sky during the National Anthem, AND after the game.
2. The Sox shut out the Tigers, 5-0. Great pitching.
3. Fireworks after every homerun. Fireworks at the end of the game.
4. Many Elvises, Elvis contests, and a really good Elvis "tribute" guy at the end.
5. An AMAZING fireworks show at the very end.
You don't get a show like that at Wrigley.
We took the El (public trans. train) down and back. Now it's 12:20, and I'm getting up at 6 AM to go run 7 miles with Jamie. Uuuuuggghhhhh...:o
Going to bed. Love to all, L.

Kitsune, I thought you were here already.
Snap, good luck. Where I work, it could take months to find out if you have a new position, kind of like Fish's Bee Doc position. I rarely have to move around, fortunately. I love my position- just not all the lunch stealers and little babies (the adult ones) I work with.
The first time I took DD to see fireworks, she was about three or so, Fourth of July, and she says, "Mom, can we go tomorrow night?" Like it happened every night, and I'd just not been letting her in on it...
The first time she went trick or treating, I guess about two? (We lived in an apartment she called Butterfly House because I'd hatched out some Monarchs for her) she went into the first house and sat down on their couch like she was planning on staying the evening! No, honey, we just go door to door and hit as many houses as we can!!!

You can find out what funny accents all these Americans have. 'Course you probably have one too since you live down there. Mine, of course, is completely normal, eh.. Just don't ask me to say "about"
Nanci - This is our first batch of gewurztraminer. I'll let you know how it turns out. The good thing is DH will drink anything so if I don't like it, I get the good stuff from the liquor store and he drinks the home brew. That being said, we don't actually "home" brew - we make it at a Wine Shop. That means, I go in and order it, and 6-8 weeks later, we spend an hour bottling it. It costs about 1/3 of store bought wine.
Sorry that your daughter smokes - darn kids are always a worry, even when they are adults. My DD's will be 21 and 23 this fall. They are being good, for now, but one of them put me thru hell during her teens... I'm a lttle worried about the 20 year old who just moved to the big city with her boyfriend. She's got a good head on her shoulders so I think she'll be ok...
Housework - must do some today. You can always tell when I've been spending my time outside - this week it is landscaping. Oldest DD politely suggested I vacuum yesterday. I politely suggested that she lives here too (rent free!!!!) and is welcome to do it herself. She said they are not her dogs (dog hair-the reason we need to vacuum). Her little brother, bless his heart, asked her if she could please clean up her hair in bathroom because it clogs up the sink and tub drains.

Whaaa....? Jeez, you sleep 5 hours, run 7 miles, eat some crepes, go to Target, and TE goes berzerk! I'll go check out this thread, if it still exists.

And yes, BZ, much fireworks. No action. But I'm such a north sider...I didn't see much eye candy at the Sox game. Only a Chicagoan could get that, and a south sider would henceforth never speak to me again. I'm banking on no south side Chicago gals here....or...yikes! :p

Man, and look at all the flack from my sig "Gay rights don't threaten my marriage, it's those straight women sleeping with my husband." That was from a New Yorker cartoon, fer goodness sakes. Meanwhile that nasty man-masterbates-dog post keeps sailing along....

It's not like buying two more bottles of really great wine is going to kill me...There were only one more of each on the shelf...Probably should taste them first, but I've NEVER met a dessert wine I didn't love. Not like- love.

I can't get to the Terry site, is it a sign???
You think it's a guy posting? It looks like a girl's picture and s/he started the "Who started you on biking" thread as well... Regardless, it's gross...
I don't know. But it does not "feel" like a girl to me. Girls don't talk about "around the water cooler", do we? That's what guys do...anyway. It's a gross post, and I hope they pull it soon. Sigh. Thread Drift wasn't started as a "talk about inappropriate and rude stuff here" thread. And I have a feeling that if somebody started to post such things here, we'd isolate and eject them pretty quickly.

I've decided I need a snuggli for my cat, Issac. When I'm on the computer, he sits as close as felinely possible, and purrs loudly. He often tries to sit ON the keyboard, and frequently drapes his tail over my wrist. Right now he's nearly falling off the desk to get closer to me. I'm sayin. Snuggli. Oh, but wait, then I'd be a crazy middle aged cat woman nut case. OK. Never mind.

apropos of nothing (as befits TD), I got a stand for my exercise ball. I have a fairly small apartment, and the danged thing rolls all over. Almost fell over it coming out of the bedroom this morning. If I wedge it somewhere, like in a closet, I forget about altogether. I don't use it enough as it is!
My niece and nephew LOVE to play with it when they come over. One day my nephew found my little free weights, and was really craving some of his own. I don't know that his folks will be thrilled, but tomorrow I'm giving him a small exercise ball and two 3# weights for his 7th b-day. In the aisle at Target, I saw this stand. It's a plastic ring you snap together. What a boon. Now the thing will stay put, and it will be easier to use it, too. I don't like all that rolling around when I'm lying on it!

oooh. So DPITA actually remembered that she'd told me she'd get me that Brooks saddle as an early B-day present (um... 5 mos early?) so that's awesome. =) It was funny, saying "Honey, the ladies on the forum have had them close to 30 years. I mean... $67 investment for 30 years of enjoyment... if you wanted, I could give you two bucks a year for it!"
She said "That's silly. You're not even 30 yet! How would you know anything about 30 year old saddles?!" weird?
Someone's a little sensitive that 3-0 is getting closer every year. *huf* she needs to know I think she's beautimus the way she is, and I probably couldn't understand/mesh with her the way I do if she were 21. =P

Bought a cool mug thing for SS, and some drinkable stuff, and spent $40 on potholders/oven mitts and some reversable silicon wedged stirrer dealy in a gorgeous olive/apple green. The four potholders/mitts are all different but matching patterns.
I _barely_ resisted buying two Portmerion Botanic Garden food/water dishes for Dill, mainly I am afraid to say because my favorite had a slight chip...Someday I will get them for him. I think they are really creme brulee cups.

No! I haven't even gone to the basement yet! I'm stuck in the vortex that is Team Estrogen Women's Cycling Discussion Forums!
I am so envious of fishjr. I always wanted an Easy Bake oven. Funny thing is, now I have the adult version. I live in a cool old building, but my kitchen will only accomodate one of those small ovens. And it only has one rack, because it's so old that nobody can find a rack that size anymore. So. I can bake 8 cookies at a time. Eight. That's it. I even had to find an extra small cookie sheet! When I buy a place and have a real oven again, it will be the height of luxury. :p

Got my saddle! Probably on sale because it is 2005. Less padding.
I'm escaping the vortex right now and going outside. I already have my leftover pork tenderloin and oven-roasted potatoes out there, with a gloass of a previously untasted Alice White Chardonnay, which smells very fruity, and my wine log, and my Palm with my wine software, and my 23 Days in July book, and my pen, and a Sierra Trading Post catalog, and some other catalog. Now all I need is the torts and Dill, who is already packaged up to go out. I can hear him hooing for me.

Lise, I have a mental list of things I want in my next place, too. This time it's more storage and a kitchen I can actually move around in, plus an oven that isn't 75 degrees too hot (I burned some things before I figured that out.)
My senior year of college, a shower was first on my list. The building I lived in was so old that it had plaster on the walls and not enough water pressure to have showers! I thought at first it would be relaxing, but it was the worst. When there was no hot water, a cold bath was pure torture. I was the RA for that building, so it wasn't like I could move. gruh. I hate it when they oak it too much. dpita's ex was a home brewer, made meads and wines of all sorts. Oaked the h*ll out of pretty much everything and as I like it light 'n fruity (NO PUNS, Knotted or CWR!) it totally ruined them for me.

Kitsune, do you like Pinot Gris? That is currently my favorite white. VERY different from Pinot Grigio. I also like Gewurtzraminer and Viognier and Gruner Veltliner a lot. And some Sauvignon Blanc. And of course Riesling. Oh, and Chenin Blanc! I hadn't liked Chardonnay until recently, because of the oak, and the Alice White typifies what I hadn't liked perfectly...

I LOVE Gwurtz. I'll have to look up the Gremlin Gwurtz... it's made locally, I think... very nice art, very spicy, fruity taste. I'm alright with Pinot Gris- it depends on the brand and the year, though... I'm a riesling freak, though. =D
As much as I like whites, in the winter, there's nothing like a rich, syrupy Tawny or Ruby Port to warm you up. =)

I alternate, white one night, red the next. Sometimes a dessert wine on a special occasion. Although Bonny Doon makes an AWESOME Viognier dessert wine in a 500ml bottle that I can NOT resist. OMG!!! I like the fortified wines, too. I have only drank Florida native ports (750ml bottle for $8!!) but am hoarding a Quinta do Noval "real" port. For reds I love Shiraz/Syrah, Petite Sirah, sometimes Zinfandel. Sometimes Pinot Noir. Less often Merlot. Almost never Cabernet Sauvignon. Like Cabernet Franc and Lemberger and Malbec. Only tried one Rioja, didn't impress me. I am sitting on a Barolo, but haven't ever tried it. I like red blends a lot, too, and some white blends, particularly Rhones.
I'm going to do the Pinot Meuniere tonight, since the Chard sucked...

Ok, that sucked so much I poured it out!!
Boo.
Was it oxidized or just over-oaked? You know, if you can stand the wait, you might actually really enjoy making your own.
I'm back! Had to get dinner in the oven. I'm making something super easy, too. Chicken with green enchilada sauce, baked. I was going to make rice, but then thought--hey I love corn tortillas, I have corn tortillas, therefore: no rice, no extra pot to wash! We need a "therefore" symbol on the computer. You know, the three dots in a triangle.
So. The saddle. I like it. I'm reserving judgement a bit until I've ridden more. Also, I was so excited to get out on it that I forgot to take off my undies and put on Chamois butt'r before I pulled on my bike shorts! :o I'm riding, thinking, oh, crud. That feels like seams. It is seams. It's my undies. Shoot!
The saddle is firm. If it agrees with my sit bones, I will be very happy. I like the narrow nose. I did not feel any pain under my pubic bone. I hated the Serfas tri saddle because it made my pubic bone hurt so much. I took the allen wrench with me, and stopped a couple of times to move the seat back, then forward, tried it out for a couple of miles each way. I like it all the way back. That makes sense, as I'm pretty long legged. When I got home, I tilted it down a smidge, and will ride it that way next time. Rode 13 miles this evening. If it's a quiet night on call, I'll ride some more tomorrow. Without undies.
Nanci, you know I'm not supposed to drink when I read "that sucked so much I poured it out", and I thought, "you wasted alcohol?!@!"

It just tasted weird. The cork looked good. It was a 2002- I think the amount of "brownness" it had was probably normal. It didn't taste _bad_, just icky. it smelled vaguely of fig, and I oculdn't relaly name what it tasted like. it was _almost_ fizzy.
Oh well. Two strikes, I'm out. Strangely, that's the second of three bottles from the same shop which was bad. The other had something major wrong with it. I have left, from there, one bottle of 2000 Gewurtz from Germany. It all came from a small shop in Blue Ridge, Georgia. The other bad wine was a German Pinot Noir Rose. Totally bad. Actually, I had a Martin and Weyrich Muscat from California, from the same seller. It was ok, as in not bad, but not something I would buy again. But my two bottles of Dahlonega gold were wonderful...
I wish I had room for a proper wine cellar.
Nanci
08-12-2006, 06:18 PM
Lise, I hated doing it- but- it was so bad...I only poured out the glass- the bottle will get to breathe tomorrow night and get another chance.
Cripes, I _still_ feel my lungs lunging out of my chest in longing when I see someone light up a cig on TV- and I've quit for maybe 15 years. It totally disgusts me, but the addiction is there waiting for the slightest weakness.
Kitsune06
08-12-2006, 06:26 PM
Do you store them sideways to keep the cork wet? It tends to prevent shrinkage and still maintain the wine's ability to breathe... Oh, and use a little shot of C02 to blast out any oxygen-rich air that gets in the bottle before corking it... (unless you do all this already.) :D

Lise, do you cook rice a lot? One of my best kitchen purchases ever was a rice cooker. Absolutely perfect every time.
Yeah, you know, these guys I went out with this spring/summer, some of them really questioned me about why I don't drink *at all*. Like maybe I just over-reacted when I got sober 22 years ago. I wanted to ask them, "Really? You want to sign on for that little experiment? I drink 'socially' so you won't be uncomfortable on our date? How much insurance do you have?" Take my word for it. It's for the best, me not drinking! Hmm, let's see, I'm also allergic to certain antibiotics. Or shall I take some tonight and just see what happens?
I want to find a guy who's fit, smart, spiritual, and couldn't care less that I don't drink. Oh, yeah, and really digs me.
(Just in case the universe forgot what I'm requesting :p )

I do cook brown rice a fair amount. I love the taste of white basmati rice, but I believe its nutritional value is about...nil. How's the rice cooker for ease of cleaning?

Pretty good. Just lift out the little metal bowl for the rice/water/etc, wipe it out and throw it in the dishwasher (if you have a REAL dishwasher, you might be able to skip the pre-wash, but ours is sorta wimpy) but I've never tried making brown rice in mine... so I'm with you... Nanci, how does it work on brown rice?
Nanci

It has a little aluminum pot, non-stick? that lifts out and is simple to clean. The rice gets into a little crust thing on the pot that flakes right off.
Have you ever had brown rice with French's Freeze Dried Onion Rings crumbled into is??? OMG- it's _so_ good.

Oh, now that sounds delish. If I can manage to not eat all the onion rings right out of the can! OK, I'll pick up a little rice cooker. I like the "flakes right off" and "throw in the dishwasher" parts. I don't really like that instant rice in bags, and I hate scrubbing out the pan when I cook rice. I really do like corn tortillas, but sometimes, you want rice! Thanks for the tips.

brix? Hmmm.... The only gauge I know is 00, 01, 02 etc. I am trying to learn to lik white wines but so far I only like the sweeter ones (02's). Gewurtz, reisling, ehrenfelser fall into that category so far.
Lise - there are guys like that out there and you will find one. I chose not to drink for about 20 years and got so sick and tired of the pressure to drink. What business is it of anyone's if I don't want any? Why do they even care? I figure it just made them uncomfortable about their own drinking. It wasn't like I was being high and mighty about it. I got the most pressure from my own family... They all thought I was just being anti-social. (In actual truth I avoided it because it encouraged my ex to drink and that was not a good thing.) And they were all so happy when I started drinking again after I was separated... People are weird.

a rice cooker is the best kitchen investment we ever made. it is so easy to clean, the rice is always perfect and it can keep rice hot for hours. this is great when dd wants rice for lunch and dh and I are planning stirfry for dinner.
brown rice works will in the cooker as well. yes, it takes longer, and you have to play around a few times to get the rice to water ratio perfect, but, you can definitely do brown rice.

Yes, just in case the universe needs reminding I wanna find his sister.
Also it seems I need to be more specific to the universe, she should be single. Not like the gal who asked me out recently and (I think I'm safe here, she doesn't bike and never will) says "Oh, I should tell you my GF of 4 years? I thought we were breaking up but now she wants to get back together and I'd just like to have someone neutral to talk about this with"

kelowna: Yep, that would be Isaac, if I didn't have a flat screen monitor! I have a great picture somewhere of him conked out on my desk with my master's thesis up on the computer screen. There's a bag of pretzels and can of Diet Coke on the desk. Sums up my grad school experience. Oh, and driving up to Madison, Wisconsin and spending a gazillion dollars on the phone with this ...well, we'll just say ex. This was before anybody much used email. Imagine how much I could have saved. Imagine what I could've learned in grad school if I weren't obsessing about that "relationship" nonsense!

Spent my day on the Appalachian Trail harvesting rocks to build steps. When we want nice rectangular rocks for steps, we plant them and water them and cultivate them for 2-3 years until they are the size and shape we want. Then we harvest them. Unfortunately, we can't plant them on the trail because being stepped on constantly by hikers would deform their symmetry during the critical growth phase. It would sure save alot of work if we could plant them where we want them. Instead we have to wait until they weigh 300-500 lbs and move them with a grip hoist. This devise is a cross between a hand winch, a zip line, and an aerial dog leash. Since we had about 40 feet of downhill in our 100 foot hoist line (1/2 inch steel cable) today, the rocks enjoyed a speedy run until they contacted the rotten birch log on the ground. Then we did the dog leash thing and walked them along the line to their drop point. The final drop required three people to tug the line as the cable relaxed it to the ground. Three new stone steps installed today.
Maybe I should have said that I spent my day havesting rocks and dreaming up tall tails. But most of that story is actually true.
Tomorrow I'll be riding. No more time for silly dreams.

I think I got bit by a spider or something. I've got a red bump on my right shin, not quite quarter sized. It doesn't itch, but it does hurt if I touch it.
Poor Chloe got stung on the nose today. It was bound to happen, she's always sticking it in places it doesn't belong. She finally p!ssed off a bee or something. Now she's got a red dot on top of her nose.
OOoh, I hate that. Sounds like a spider. Itch, no, hurt, yes.
I lived with an ex and her German Short-Haired Pointer once. We were in the kitchen after a walk one evening, and saw drops of blood on the floor. After we ascertained that neither of us were bleeding, we checked out the dog very carefully. Turned out that when she'd nosed around in some bushes and backed out with a "YIPE!", it was because a cat had swatted her on the snout! She had a long scratch. Poor pups!

Brix
The measurement of soluble solids in grapes at harvest, taken with a refractometer and expressed in degrees. In unfermented grapes, degrees of Brix are approximately the same as percent of sugar. After fermentation, the alcohol concentration is roughly half the sugar concentration of the juice. Thus, grapes harvested at 22.5 degrees Brix will produce a wine with an alcohol content between 12.5 to 13.5%.

Snap, I went to a kitchen store yesterday to buy something for Secret Sis. I also spent $40 on new oven mitts and potholders. I love them!! I don't think I've had new kitchen stuff since I moved to Florida in 1998. My towels, though...BF has some sweet towels, just for him. Big and soft and cuddly Egyptian Cotton. I like a bath sheet, such as from Company Store, and a pretty small low-pile bath towel for my hair.
Speaking of 1998, I am tasting a Reserve Rioja from 1998. I am not impressed. I must be a young wine only liker. I'm not that into the old leather, pepper, dust, coffee taste. Give me wild overbearing fruit any day.
So while I was at Sam's Club, I scored a Muscat dessert wine from Australia, a Temperanillo rose, from Spain, a California Chard I hadn't heard of, imagine that, and a Riesling from Australia. Also about eight dinners. We're having lasagna tonight.
I took the torts out to graze, but it began raining. 81F and raining here, 87% humidity.
I rode 30 miles with my group. I caught a Rough Green Snake! Picture to follow some day! This is the only green snake in Florida, very sweet, likes to climb trees, never bites. In less than five minutes it was so calm anyone could hold it just by letting it crawl through their fingers- no need to grasp on to it. Released back into the tree.
I found out a girl in my group has left her husband. MWBR. She has lost a ton of weight, I noticed today. Her jersey is hanging on her. You can see what her face is supposed to look like. Lucky. She rode 50 miles today. I love seeing people's mileage go up. I hope she loves riding. She's the group's TDF expert.
It's really raining now.
I had a three hour nap.
I think I'll go watch Seinfeld.
New saddle should be here Wednesday or Thursday. Fish, you have it, right? Is yours 2005 or 2006? Are the shorts you don't love the Shebeast pretty expensive ones that I got, but didn't keep?
I'm still loving the RS Flexes. I should buy another pair before they are changed. I suspect they are changing the fabric. I wish Susan would tell us what exactly is being changed. I love the light fabric. I heard rumors that it didn't hold up well- spontaneously disintegrated or something. I haven't had mine long enough to comment.

Kitsune - do you have any other job prospects? Those hours sound lousy, especially if you don't like the job to begin with.
I spent two years as an Administrative Assistant and was pretty good at it. It was a little dull (typical office job) but I really liked that I could settle into what I was doing and just do my job or just do what my mgr told me, without having to worry about this, that, or the other thing... that and the hrs and pay were way better. =P
After all my call center and office work, I'm hoping I can get back into that... just not that many prospects in my area. Not to worry- I'm always hunting Craigslist.
The worst part about my job is that my DPITA works morning shifts generally, so if I don't see her for an hour before work, the only time I do see her is for a couple hour overlap while we're sleeping or a little on our one shared day off. *sigh*
So... yeah. Since I spend 8+ hrs a day behind a desk, glued to the computer and radios so I can start firing off pager messages etc in case of a chemical spill or injury, I tend to always have this window open and another for job hunting. Yay.
Nanci- I'm with you. I can enjoy the leather/oaken/peppery flavors, but only in moderation. I *really* like the fruitjuicey ones, or just straight out mead. There are people who would laugh at me for saying I like hard ciders and Zima, but I just like the flavor and a mild fuzz... strongly flavored wines and beers I *really* have to be in the mood for... Hefeweizen, though...;)

I've been attempting to keep track of what's going on.... SO much happens while i'm at work or asleep...the joys of time zones hey!
Anywho, I have a story....Please don't take this the wrong way ladies k...
I was at my favorite cafe this morning ordering my regular coffee & there was this large dude looking at the menu...He was SO loud & rather rude I thought to the 2 cool chicks( claire & steph) & dude (brayden) that run the place..I just had to ask him whee he was from as I thought he may have been American...He said "YEAH, I"m FRUM TALAHASSEE FLORIDA"...errrr ok..end of conversation...He complained that the cafe didn't have pancakes (noone does here really) and WHO eats BAKED BEANS for breakfast...What a complete freak...I had to tell claire "i'm really sorry you have to put up with americans like that...however you have a regular like me from a friendlier place up north". Rant over & I have no idea how i find all the LOUD americans who don't seem to get it...
Right...
I went for a ride tonight in the hopes of finding headwind...Well i got a bit more than I bargained for..Headwind, tailwind, sidewind & salt on my glasses..I rode down to the fremantle area via the train line that runs beside the beach...I have no idea how to judge how well the ride went. All i can say is Woeeeeee..sidewinds!!!! Freaky at 30km/hr downhill with cars next to me! It woke me up!!!
Ian and I are putting an offer on a house tomorrow night..We've been looking and man are there some nice places just WAY WAY too big...One place we looked at on the weekend was ok inside for space but we could have built a mtn bike skills course in the backyard...!!!!! No thanks, too big & too much maintenance..We'd rather bike on the weekends....

:D HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FISHJR!:D
CC--it was fun to see your picture up on Open! I've got the Bloks, am picking up the Lara bars today, and will have them in the mail tomorrow! The house looks very nice. Isn't the internet amazing? Not only do I have a friend in Oz, but I can look at the house you're looking at. Cracked me up that you went looking for headwind. Here on the prairie, it comes looking for us! :p
I am already waking up early thinking about what to pack for the tri! It's also that I worked Sat night and didn't get much sleep. When I get "off" with the sleep at all, it's hard to sleep through the night for awhile after that. Given that I work at least two night shifts a week...well, you see how that goes! But this morning I kept waking up thinking about my plans for the day, plans for the tri. Finally got up at 6:30. I've got the day off. I'm going to head out for a ride, in hopes of missing the rain. On the Bianchi, with its narrow tires, I'm skittish about riding on wet pavement.
Nanci--I'm off to look at your snakey!

Crazy, they call Jacksonville, FL- just east from Tally- Freakville...
I was gonna say, last weekend, did you know that if you wear light blue/light gray bike shorts, with no panties, you can see _everything_??? Nice...I spent hours staring at some girl's butt a week ago Saturday. TMI!!!! It showed through pink!!

Eeeewwww! I look at girls' butts for a living. I shouldn't have to look at them out in public. :p It's especially embarrassing when you know the other person isn't aware of it. What are you going to say? "Hey, your bike shorts are totally transparent?"
CC- I take no offense when someone says they met a rude, loud American. I meet them every day! You just don't see the thoughtful, quiet ones, because we blend in and don't demand pancakes.

crazycanuck,
I'm sorry you had to put up with "my fellow American".
Please tell the two cool chicks and dude for us that not all Floridians are like that, Nanci for example.
Note to loud dude, let me connect the small dots for you. It's called travel. That's why we go. The goal is to see different things, experience stuff stuff, meet cool people and BROADEN our tiny little mind.
Dude, you've spent too much time in Disneyland where it's "International area" and "It's a Small World After All". The world is not like that (French like facade, see show, get a happy meal).
If you want to eat the same stuff each day...stay home...puhleeeze.
Edited to add Duck on Wheels and I are now great aunts! Jalen Jacob arrived 8:27pm last night 7lbs8oz 20 3/4in

While I was wandering around in NZ I occaisionally ran across other Americans. Obvious ones, anyway. I avoided them when I could. They were embarrassing.
Luckily for me, I sounded Canadian. No-one ever guessed. Oh, and I was polite, which is NOT what was expected or noticed.
Yup, us polite ones fade into the background.

Thanks Lise! She's at school! Wow! She walked in and immediately started playing and making new friends. She didn't hug us good-bye - just said "Bye Mom, Bye Dad, Bye Ben"...and that was it. Here's a pic or 2. She said she felt taller this morning. I think she looks taller, too. ;) And CC - no uniforms - and it's private school. Wierd, huh?
For some reason it's showing the link to the attachments and not the pics. Oh well, you'll have to click if you want to see her.

New saddle should be here Wednesday or Thursday. Fish, you have it, right? Is yours 2005 or 2006? Are the shorts you don't love the Shebeast pretty expensive ones that I got, but didn't keep?
Cool on the rough green snake - they are sooooo pretty!
I think I have the 2006, but I'm not sure. I can check when I get home. The shorts are the Performance Ultra (2005) which have a chamois that looks remarkably like the one in the Shebeest SSS shorts and the Terry T-shorts. I should be able to squeeze in a ride tomorrow - I'll see how they do then. I'm still going to get myself the Sugoi RS Flex shorts if I get the job.
I was late getting in today - gotta go dissect fish. All day. Fun. Not.

Fishdr - love the pics. Your kids are so cute. My youngest starts school on Wednesday and is very excited (so am I more biking time).
Just thought I would let you American girls know that my sister-in-law just returned to Australia after visiting us here in the USA for three weeks. She couldnt get over how nice the people were here. She has traveled all over the world and did say she didnt have the best impression of Americans traveling but after being here in the States she couldnt say enough nice things about you all.
It unfortunate when a few create a bad image for the rest. Yep Australia sure has that problem too with the bad mouth beer swilling traveler.
Have a good one ladies.:)

Back later kids. Kitsune-be careful when you work late...Do you work far from home & do you bike to work???
I work about 10mi from home, but wouldn't bike there for my life. To get there, I'd have to go through neighborhoods I don't especially trust in the daytime. Drivers are terrible here, if they were ever officially licensed in this country, and/or have insurance  so if I ever DID get hit, I could put my money on it being a hit and run. so... no way. Even driving I get nervous, because I can't go home at night without seeing at least one cop car with his lights on.
...and it's a small town!
Anyone in hillsboro/Forest Grove might understant my sentiments...

cc sorry about the loud americans. any more i really don't have patience for them. when we went down to PI it was really nice. mostly aussies down there. i was about the only white girl, got many looks. i was worried they would think bad of me down there (don't really like americans), but i had this very old lady who was on the jeepny look across at me and just started chatting away like we were old friends. then whenever i was walking down the street all the lady's would catch my eye and smile and nodd at me. made me feel so good. i can't wait to go back this december!

Jeez - I'm scared just looking at your bike Kitsune.
I don't know why it is that the loudest most objectionable amercans seem to wash up on foreign shores. I had a real eye opener after visiting the USA having been subjected to american tourists in Scotland. I couldn't believe how polite and helpful people were stateside.
As for Scots - just because we don't smile, it desn't mean we're not pleased to see you....we're just kind of understated.
Fish your kids are sooooo cute.
Fish, the kids are so cute you could bottle and sell it!!! I'll bet the little guy really misses her. Ah, change. If you get the bee job, when would you move?
If you want to meet some seriously polite Americans, go to Salt Lake City, Utah. Almost creepy to someone from Chicago. They are nice, nice, nice. Worried me a bit.
Kitsune, your bike is very cool! I know you love her.
I just got back from a 30 mile ride, during which I decided I wanted a liver sausage and egg sandwich. I recently found this "low fat" liversausage at the Jewel. I loved liver sausage as a kid--who knows why?! But it's so salty and tasty. One day I saw this Oscar Meyer reduced fat braunsweiger (same thing, to me), and bought it. YUM! So I just boiled some eggs and chopped them up with the remainder of the liver sausage. A little mayo to hold it all together, and some minced onion. Yumolicious. Isaac the cat ate a couple of bites, too. He's a big fan of the liver as a food group.
Lara bars are energy bars, along the lines of Clif bars. They are made of only nuts and dates plus flavorings. Very good, and not overly sweet. CC and I really like the Cocoa Mole. I *think* it's the same people that make Maya bars--all of the flavors are based on chocolate.

The Maya bars are good. I really liked the Chocolate Orange one when I first tasted it, so I bought a case when they went on sale. Now, for some reason, they taste like something you'd use to clean a car engine. As I am pretty cheap about somethings, I'll still eat them until they're gone. But I will not enjoy them.

OMG. I just saw that Maya bars make a Chocolate Coffee bar.
I must say that cutting back on the caffeine has helped with the irregular skipped heartbeats. So it's worth it. By next week, I will have cut out caffeinated coffee all together (sniff :( ). Probably still engage in the occasional diet Coke. I will miss caffeine. I love caffeine. But this feeling of my chest about to collapse on itself is most unpleasant. Decaffeinating does help. I am going for the echocardiogram tomorrow.

As for Americans, somehow travel seems to bring out the worst in them. I have met so many Aussies and New Zealnaders when they are taking their year abroad after college and they are always nice and respectful and willing to try new things. Americans just, I don't know, get scared and that act buffoonish in trying to hide their fear. DH and I were in Florence about a million years ago (well, a couple of years before the boys were born, which feels like a million years ago) and there was this guy berating the waitstaff because none of them spoke english. DH and I wanted to just melt into the wall.

Lise - If I get the job, they said I could start at my earliest convenience. We're thinking Thanksgiving, but that feels long. We would need to sell our house and buy a new one, so that'll take at least a month or so. If they include extra relocation costs (buying my house), that'll speed things up significantly. I have lots to wrap up here at work, too. So - sometime in October or November.
Trek - congrats on the new member of the family! I love the name!
Brina - it's 4K (4 year old Kindergarten). Apparently we have to supply the snack tomorrow. The joy of being at the beginning of the alphabet.

Trek, congrats on the new nephew. I have a new one too, born Aug 5, 8 lb 9 oz, 21 inches. His brother, now 3, has already been backpacking and bicycling with me. Truthfully, I'm only an honorary aunt (no real relation) but I love these kids and their moms are special friends.

She bites constantly when I'm careless with the screwdriver and it slips etc. ;)
I was riding with a Eugenian MTB group, and my exdh and I were talking about how pagan folk in Eugene talk about woodland spirits. We decided it'd be funny if there were one named "B*tchcakes" who clomped around the woods in heavy steel toed boots (not unlike me and mine) and one guy in the group heard the name and thought we'd attributed it to my bike. It caught on with us quickly, and soon she was the woodland spirit that clomped through the woods with beefy, knobby tires.
Since then, I've had a hard time talking about the bike or her name because some people are sensitive to such words... and as I've grown more attached to my bike and less militantly "Grr, boots/leather/grease!" er... (less militantly *cough*d_key*cough*) she's gotten the title "miss" and her name abbrevriated.
... and that's the story of the name Miss 'cakes. If I'm a hard-a** cutie-pie, I must be the cutie-pie on the hard-a** bike.:D

I'm thinking "Edinbuurah"
As I started out on my last 30 mile ride before next Sunday's tri, I thought I'd strip the bike down to the bare essentials. I wouldn't carry all my keys, they wouldn't fit in the bento box with my phone and Clif blox anyway! I cleverly hid them in my storage locker in the basement, closed the door, and locked the padlock!!! OH NO MR. BILL!!! That's the padlock I *never* lock, it just sort of holds the door shut, didn't the slip of paper with the combination on it get lost long ago?!?!? Yes. Argh! Sloth never pays! I keep meaning to put another lock on there, one to which I know the combo! Our basement is so secure that I don't bother with actually locking the storage locker. My bikes are locked up separately.
Now I have a real problem. Hmmm. I scrounge around the basement and find a metal file. Use that to cut through the screening on the front of the locker. Reach in and get my keys. Go up to my apartment for my hammer and screwdriver. One more look around to make sure I don't have that combo anywhere. Nope. Back downstairs, pry the entire lock thing out of the wood door. Sigh heavily.
Go out on my ride. Have a great time.
Come home, go to Home Depot, buy wood putty and a new hasp for the door. Install it the wrong way (of course), take it off, reinstall it. Patch up the gouges in the wood door. This is when it pays to live in an old building. Easy to break into my own storage locker!
Make an appt to take The Green Hornet in for her pre-tri tune up. Decide to bite the bullet and clean my chain. For the first time. For some reason, it has intimidated me. Get it pretty darned clean, and wash down the whole bike. She's gleaming. Then I notice my poor, beloved Marin Larkspur, who's never once had her chain cleaned. I clean her up too. Everybody's clean, dry, lubed and locked up safe. My hands are filthy.
Oh, and I bought a rice cooker! Haven't used it yet.
Going for echocardiogram in the AM. Going to bed now. Sleep tight, TD!

My daughter was born at 12:02 AM...But I didn't get any publicity!
I had a bad day yesterday. We went to see World Trade Center. It was a good movie. I didn't know how it was going to end.
(Lise, don't listen) I poured out THREE bottles of sucky wine- the Pinot Peunier that was awful- possibly spoiled, the Rioja I hated- never again, that's the second one I hated, and the Chardonnay that was all oak and overpowering.
(Ok Lise) Then I had a mammogram after work. So I have a strong family history. Because I am so paranoid, I have to have a specific tech do it, and then a specific rad read it on the spot and tell me. Well, this year, how it works is the rad reads it, then a Computer-Aided Detection program reads it, and of course, it found a bunch of stuff, which the rad then said was nothing. So I had nightmares all night, then talked to another rad this morning who reassured me that the sensitivity wa set way way high, and I could trust the rad, especially since this one called more things than anyone else, so if she thought it was fine, then I shouldn't worry. But I still am...He also said that mom getting breast cancer in her 70's didn't increase my risk statistically. I didn't know that.
I just feel drained, though.

You deserve a big glass of good wine...but it's probably early morning there - but hey, what the heck! ;) (this time thing's so confusing when your on the other side of the atlantic.)
I share your views on rioja - I've never tasted one I liked. I also hate chardonnay because its nearly always over oaked. I've had some good Chilean reds recently. I've gathered you're quite a wine buff. Over in the UK Chilean wine is cheap and big and fruity and delicious for everyday drinking...so to speak.

Oh I see, bikerz's comment. I think that's for winddance - I'm still waiting.
Sorry for the confusion!!!
I should have been more specific, prefacing each line with the person to whom it applied ! I guess I don't post enough in TD to have the habit yet! :o Yes, Winddance started a new job yesterday -
Snap: we know you'll post here first yourself about the job, right?

I want my new bike. I want it now. Want, want, want.
I am not patient. Having little daydreams of getting it shipped here so I can ride while the weather is still good.
Hmmmmmm, spend $$ shipping or spend $$ changing gear ratios so I can ride on our hills. (I'm very good at pushing bikes up hills as I walk demurely beside them. Lots of practice has perfected my technique...)
Dunno which will be more exciting in December: getting DPITA or getting the Waterford! "Hi honey, great to see ya, I'm going for a bike ride now, back in a couple hours ok?"
I see neurologist #2 tomorrow. The medical history paperwork is huge and thorough, which makes me happy. My entire MRI fits on a CD, which is also cool. Dang MRI cost more than a bike.
Yup, I've got ALL my priorities straight!:D

I have seen both movies- Flight 93, which was pretty emotional, and World Trade Center, which was good, but not that emotional for me.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
It is about #18 and #19 of 20 survivors who were pulled out alive.

I don't know if we are supposed to learn anything, or supposed to not forget. I will never forget the sickness I felt at our coutry being attacked. It must be how our parents felt at Pearl Harbor. I will also always remember the instinctive fear I felt upon seeing the first plane in the sky after days of planes being kept on the ground. You can't go back to the innocence of the time before 9/11.
What I learned from Flight 93 was, I thought they, the passengers, tried to crash the plane, but in the film, they tried to get rid of the terrorists and crashed by accident. They had someone all set to try to fly and land the plane.
Whatdya say, party when we hit page 500? And to think, Nanci's the Mother of Thread Drift. :D
Let's see...so much to respond to...
First, the echocardiogram. The guy (I say "guy" because I don't know his title, I guess I'd call him sonographer, Nanci can correct me if I'm wrong) who did the echo was very nice, very chatty, but I know we each develop our own style of interaction with patients. He said at the end that it looked "pretty unremarkable". The cardiologist will render a final verdict, and my doc will call me with the report. I could probably look it up myself tomorrow when I'm at the hospital...<slap on wrist> Bad health care provider! Be a patient! :p
All in all, good news. I was turned away from the screen for most of it, but I did see some. It is very strange to watch my own heart pause in its rhythm just when I feel that pressure in my chest. I wanted to smack the screen and get it going again! Of course it gets going again on its own. Everything I've heard and read says this (the premature ventricular contractions or PVCs I'm having) is a benign condition. Annoying, but benign. I'm doing OK with cutting out the coffee. I want it, of course, but I notice how many more PVCs I have after drinking it. Makes it not worth it.
.......................
Bruno--my revered ancestor, Alexander McQ--, was a younger son on a croft on Skye, as far as I know. He signed up to come over and supress that little uprising we had over here back in the late 1700s. I don't know that he ever saw any action, but King George paid him off in a plot of land in Nova Scotia. Probably stolen from the MicMac Indians. Some of my cousins on my mom's side have a definite MicMac look to them. The older generation swears there was no mixing with the natives, but...I'd be interested to see a DNA analysis! George McQ, my great grandfather, headed south to the colonies as a young man. As far as I can tell, they all married Scots (except for the MicMacs in there somewhere), so my grandpa Devon McQ was pure Scots. He married a Swedish/Danish lass, and my mom married a German/English guy, so I'm your basic Northern European Mutt. :D
.......................
The movies--don't want to see Flight 93. I think it would give me more PVCs than MP's 5 shot latte. I do want to see WTC. Newsweek pretty much told the story, and I could handle that.
.......................
The saddle--still kind of undecided. I rode 30 miles on it yesterday. The uncomfortable part was the crease of my legs. That might be from the shorts, rather than the saddle. We'll see how it feels with the tri shorts on Sunday. I just keep thinking, "$110, that could go a long way toward a bike stand."

WD--congrats on the new job! Snap--good luck. We've all got our fingers crossed for you. L.

Lise - I'm with you, I don't want to see WTC, watching it live on TV was enough for me thank you.
Still waiting on the job. I must be patient.
Today is weigh in day. Fingers crossed.:D

Snap - good luck with the weigh in! It's tough being patient about a job, isn't it? I can totally sympathize!
I'm working at home today on my slides for my interview seminar. I just can't put it together right. I'm the type that will be changing the slides the night before. That's usually when it clicks. 1 week from today - my interview will be happening! Eek!
Lise - sounds like good news on the echo! Very good! Let us know the official results (I'm sure you will).
And - I agree with Snap - no WTC movies for me. TV coverage was more than enough.

It's major trouble if you look up your own results where I work. Yes, they can catch you...As I understand it, if they catch you twice, you automatically get fired. People probably wouldn't do this if they got their results in a timely fashion.
Lise, I read in the paper just now that a Florida woman was driving to the hospital in labor at 5AM, and a strong contraction caused her to crash into a water-filled ditch, where she proceeded to give birth, all alone, with a broken leg. A deputy found her later, trying to escape from her car. Mom and baby, Myracle, are fine.

good thing today: get to get out of the office and do some berry surveys in the field, as of right now anyhow, suppose to go in an hour, weather could change that.
bad thing today: i just want to strangle everyone in the office including the one i'm going to do surveys with. i think everyone took a crabby pill this morning before work!
i can't say i'm interested in seeing any of the WTC movies. to me that day still is only a blurr. i was in the hospital and on LOTS of morphine at the time. all i remember thinking is, 'that doens't look right. hmmm what a wierd dream. i'm actually watching the news. is it time for more morphine?'

 After not seeing SWMBO for THAT long, I can't imagine I would be able to think about the bike that much... I'd have long burned myself out completely obsessing over every little bikey detail. ...but I'd have to hug my bike and tell her I wasn't likely to see her for... oh... six or seven hours.;)
All in all, good news. I was turned away from the screen for most of it, but I did see some. It is very strange to watch my own heart pause in its rhythm just when I feel that pressure in my chest. Yeah... every time I've gone in for testing, etc, on the same problem, my doctor has either said "It's totally benign, don't worry about it" or "What pause?" because the crushing vacuum simply doesn't happen when I'm being examined. GRRR. I've been told it could be MVP in my case (Mitral Valve Prolapse) but even then, my PCP said "Oh, well, lots of people have that in such a minor way that treatment would be more painful and dangerous than the disease." and waved it off... So I understand how you feel. Esp. after a long, really hard ride, when I'm laying in bed and feel the weight of antimatter spontaneously jump into and out of existance in my chest cavity. And I used to be the sort to have 2+ Red Bulls a day. No more. :(
Grumpy pills
Grumpy pills? I know those! Little fibery ones you find in little piles in the snow in WI here-there-and-everywhere around fields? They get especially grumpy when you tell 'em what they are!

okay, okay, I'm here. Is this the spot for all the ADD folks?
I have avoided this forum all this time because i don't do any "OTHER" sports.
but curiosity killed the cat. are there rules? and no, i'm not going to read 200 pages of posts either.

But, that's the prerequisite! The girls will give you a test at the end to make sure you didn't skip anything as well! :D
Did you all know that 200 pages is not an absolute? If you go to UserCP and options and change your default to 20 posts per page, then this thread is only 150 pages. At 30 posts per page it's only 100 pages. I think we better work on number of posts - currently 2997. But of course Mimi will catch up sooner if she changes her options and only has 100 pages to read instead of 200!

I've been back there and there are people who've been lost for weeks. Someone should send in maps and supplies.
I'm depressed - I just looked out my window and saw a combine harvester in the field out back. Does that mean summer's over?

OMG, I am so bored at work, so I was reading, up in Charity Rides, A Really Cool Story, by Luvstoride94. She's 11 years old! I hope she doesn't find her way down here...
Anyway, some guy on eBay donated a really nice bike to her instead of selling it, so she could use it for fund raising rides. Very nice.
and no, i'm not going to read 200 pages of posts either.
But you'll miss so much fun! Seriously--I went back at random and read some pages of TD from the past. Jokes, stories, goofy little things that we played with for a day or two...you might want to dabble.
And welcome! :D L.

Hi Bruno- I never got what the guy with the big log was, anyway.
I unfortunately bought a Temperanillo (same grape as disgusting Rioja) only a rose. I am either drinking that tonight, or a red blend called Big Red Truck (Syrah, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Mourvedre). I'm betting I will like the red blend, and the rose will probably be dry- don't know if I will like that or not.
I used to hate Chardonnay, but have found a lot of $6-$12 that are fruity- like lemony or pineapple, with the _nice_ flavors of oak, like caramel corn or _light_ butter. I have gradually gotten to like the butter (oak) flavor as long as there is plenty of fruit to go with it. I tend to like more acidic wines, though, anyway. So I alternate whites a lot.

The guy with the big log....it's a stupid Scottish thing.
I find that oaked wines give me a headache and most chardonnay in the UK is heavily oaked. I have the same problem with heavily oaked reds but there seems to be more choice of reds that are lighter on the oak.
I hope you will be posting regular wine recommendations to educate my palate. I like to fork out for a bit of luxury now and then!

Mimi - Lise is right - we've had some pretty funny moments on here and it's worth it to dabble around and see what you stumble in to. Bring snacks, you might get lost for a while.
I just picked up my new contact lenses - I CAN SEE! They are way thicker than the last brand, but this time the prescription is correct and actually accounts for my astigmatism. The computer screen and my children are not blurry. Yippee!
FishJr is liking school! She says it's "play class" though because she hasn't learned anything yet. We feared this. I pointed out to her that she learned to draw a kitty cat today. She wants to learn more math and spelling. Off to the store to get some more workbooks. She was the "leader" today - apparently she did very well!
