I CAN'T, OBVIOUSLY! Must regain control of self...must nap...working all night...

MP, you can ride a Vespa if you have a phalanyx (I know that's not spelled correctly, is it even USED correctly?) of TE riders encircling you so that no stupid vehicles hit you--that's the problem. Not you. Them.

Maybe "swarm" would work.

nanci,

most people who type G-d or G*d are not doing it so as not to offend others. Many Jews do not type or write the name of God because there is an rule in the old testament that the name of God should never be erased or desecrated. So if they type G-d and then the post gets deleted they are not in violation. From a Jewish faq that says it better than I can:

Judaism does not prohibit writing the Name of God per se; it prohibits only erasing or defacing a Name of God. However, observant Jews avoid writing any Name of God casually because of the risk that the written Name might later be defaced, obliterated or destroyed accidentally or by one who does not know better.

07-05-2006, 04:48 PM
Hmmm, Brina, I will have to think on that.

I used to think it was bad to write X-mas, because you weren't using Christ's name, but then I learned that X actually referred to Christ in some way that I cannot explain right now (can't remember).

I came back in to say-

I live in Redneckville!!

Off to the south- rooster crowing.

Off to the southwest- either shots fired or firecrackers- cannot differentiate.

They alternate, and overlap.

Errreerrr err err errrrrrrrrrr.

Crack!

Errr er errr er errrrrrrrrr.

Crack! Crack!

I wonder if I drove the squad back into the back 40 if that would give me some peace and quiet.

Wait- that's what I love about the country- people can more or less do whatever they want, uninhibitedly.

Except when it bothers me and my bird!!

What I really want is a Vespa....

Me, too. Where in Tahoe are you going to be? North or South and where does the death ride go? Over what passes?
My parents are meeting us there and will kid sit for my hubby and I so we can go ride. This rarely happens as my parents live in Concord, Ca and I live in H*ll (Palm Springs). Hubby is English and his parents live in-you guessed it, England.
We will be in SLT, have a good trip.

Jones -

We'll be in South (I prefer North, but DR is out of Markleeville, which is just south of South LT off the 89 (I believe - could be the 88) ). We're at the Forest Inn (behing Embassy Suites, off the main drag but close enough to the super cool Sports Ltd. store (great outdoor apparel) for me! Are you riding the Flume Trail or whatever it is? (My MTB knowledge is a bit sparse, and I think you said you were MTB'ing.)

DR goes over Monitor Pass (down to the 395) and back up it and over Ebbet's pass (on the 4) and back over and finally up Carson pass. Beautiful ride!!

Have fun - enjoy the free babysitting. I know that's precious!!

15 3033 RANDI NAJAC F 35 1:26:42 18.3 CHANDLER, AZ

Yeah, maybe it is set for the wrong size tires. PP's computer on her small road bike seems to still be calibrated for normal sized tires. I can't break it to her that her ride length, pace, etc. is not what's shown. Need to find out how the heck to reset the thing!!

I told you I was going to bed. Oh, man, did I have some wierd dreams. Very strange. Can't even say what was happening, but I know my grandparents (who are dead) were there, and I was sort of hiding in the wilderness, and being in both worlds, of the currently and formerly living... and I was on call. Which is a drag when you're communing with the dearly beloved yet long departed.

OK, only 11 hr, 52 min to go on this call shift.

Do you think it's bad to eat a lot of salmon in one week? I made salmon salad from canned salmon, then bought this big piece of "wild Alaskan" salmon on sale, broiled it, realized it's 5 meals' worth for me...maybe I should freeze two of the cooked pieces. I mean the heavy metals etc issue.

SK, sorry about your flat.

I can't believe that I'm not hearing more fireworks around here tonight. Probably because it's kind of chilly. Thank heavens.

Brina, thanks for the explanation about G-d. I thought it was a prohibition against writing the name, not against erasing it.

Going to read a bit and go back to bed, hope the pregnant ladies let me get a couple more hours of sleep.

I'm sure you've thought of this (I have a tendency to state the obvious - I'm working on this) ...do a hard reset on it and then set everything again. That's what I did when I switched my computer from my hybrid to the roadbike. I couldn't figure out any other way.

Ah ha - she's awake. I knew you couldn't stay away for long. That sounds like a seriously weird dream.

I would freeze some a couple of servings of the salmon. I asked Mr. Fish (who has one of his degrees in fisheries oddly enough) and he said that if you suddenly have the desire to swim upstream and spawn (errr uhhh you know what I mean, recreationally) that you might start to get worried. They only spawn once then go belly up. :D Gill slits, scales, or tail/fin formation could also be an indicator ;)

Lise
07-05-2006, 07:30 PM
uh, yeah, I am just psyched that I actually fell asleep and stayed asleep for a few hours. I have one heck of a time turning off the mind when I am on call. Sleeping is not my forte.

OK, then I'll freeze some of the salmon just so as not to get sick of such tasty fish. I am generally up for recreational spawning, but am far too selective to be a fish. As it were. ;) L.

It was a great post, actually. As were the other responses to that poster (who was also quite unpleasant in the thin=unhealthy? thread).

We Seattle types will stand you all some lattes (or whatever you like) any time you get out to this area!

Song currently rolling around in my head for no apparent reason: The Beatles' "You're Gonna Lose That Girl".

The Magnuson quote was perfect.

I just got done with the doctor, and I had to dip my toe into the ring of fire that is the "speed" post. I'll tell you, the Tour of PHX or the one I race have nothing that we'd call a hill. Sure, there are hills around PHX, but asking people to strive in their everyday rides for a MPH based on what is probably a pretty flat race is pretty silly.

I hope my post came off okay. I wasn't trying to be boastful about my own time - just to call her on her facts.

Boy did I sleep well!! I am riding my bike tonight- riding to where my group, the Strays, meets, then riding back toward home, then abandoning them and going home. (That way I don't have to drive!) Actually I'll be riding with the pres and VP of the cycling club. They like to go slow. :-)

I never read thin=unhealthy. Just a few posts at the beginning, but didin't get into it. (Since it's obviously osmething I will never have to worry about again!)

I have a code for 10% off at performance- 6001707 good till August 4th. I need some more Friction Zone!

I couldn't make it even halfway through Twin Peaks ep 4. I poured out the disgusting Shiraz.

This is the baby docs' first day...The girl one already grabbed me in the hall and said "Teach me all you know!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And all our inpatient medical peds are moving to another branch of our hospital, so the techs from there, who have never done peds, are coming today and tomorrow to learn.

Anyhooo......I'm unemployed again and BF is out of town for a week so I have far too much time on my hands. Should be busyily typing away on my thesis, but I'm not such a big fan of writing. So instead I keep checking TE for any new updates. Luckily you girls are very prolific typers...it's like having a big group of chatty girlfriends around.

Last night was a positive frenzy of typing. Thread Drift is active, but I don't think it's ever moved that fast before. Glad to have you with us, UK! I loved climbing, but haven't done it for years. It does leave the hands sore.

I actually was in my own bed all night (that doesn't sound right...) I was on-call, but didn't get a single page. Some (rare) nights like that I just go to sleep and stay asleep. More often, like last night, I wake up at least once an hour to look at the clock and check my beeper. But who cares, because I was horizontal, at home, all night. Now I'm off to the hospital to do rounds, on 'til 10 AM. Later to the podiatrist, and then to play volleyball. I think I'll get a nap in, too. This is a "rest" day on my training schedule. VB doesn't count. Depending on nap quality, I may ride my bike to VB...or...maybe not. I am pretty bad at the "rest" days.

So I brought up the question of writing God's name at work this morning. I was told that that (can't write it, because it's bad to erase it) was a superstition dating from 2000 BC, and if that were in fact a "rule," then how could God's name be written in the bible? And, in fact, "God" itself is just a title, not God's name, which is Jehovah. Which appears 7000 times in the bible.

Interesting things to ponder.

I think you spelled it right.

I'm hoping I'm in Louisiana by the time MP is allowed back on her bike so we can have this reunion.

I'm still waiting for the call. We've all been guessing that he'd call today or tomorrow at the earliest. Thing is - I'm reaaaallly bad at waiting. I'm trying to work on slides for a talk I'm giving in St. John's Newfoundland in a little over a week, but I'm having a hard time focusing my mind. Can't you tell - I keep posting here. I have to think .... strain comparisons....gene expression....yah - that's working...

Hmmm. Centrally located. Major airport, direct flights...it's beginning to sound a lot like...CHICAGO! Although we're not so great on the bike paths, but I'll bet I could recruit beta to conjure us up a weekend's riding. And it's flat (you will now forget every time I've whined about the wind...you are getting verrrry sleeeepy....) :p

I am eating the opposite of U.K.E.'s chocolate: Veggie noodle bowl and shrimp spring roll from Whole Paycheck, er, Whole Foods. Stopped in on the way home from work to get a few more chocolate treats for CC, and the box will be in the mail tomorrow!

Nanci, who was it that you PM'd about how we don't usually have flame wars? The instigator?

I am so wiped. I'm going to take a nap.

HA. I heard that. Because I talk about sleeping far more than I actually sleep. Life of the midwife. I wish I didn't need to sleep. I really do. I could do it sometimes, like going to the movies, but I wouldn't need it to sustain life. It is so hard for me to fall asleep and stay asleep sometimes. That said, I really am going...you know the rest. L.

You GUYS! I'm going to have a call shift soon when the pregsters don't let me sleep for >24 hr, and I'm going to...well, tell you about it later! So there! That's what I'm going to do! Because I'm going to be too busy working to PM you that I'm still awake at 4 AM, etc... Recently I fell asleep while trying to write a note in a patient's chart. It was like those post-lunch classes in college, where your notes sort of trail off the side of the page...I had to finish the note standing up, so I wouldn't fall asleep. Needless to say, I'd been up for something like 26 hours at that point.

Ah, but that was a refreshing nap just now. No wierd dreams. Not on call again until Sunday night.

Who is AL???????? What is his movie?

I am more attracted to the thought of licorice than milk chocolate.

Lise, I think Peter Reid would enjoy a TD pillow fight- maybe that's a way to get his attention!!

I think my ride is rained out. I just got home with chicken chow mein and a bottle of Bogle Petit Syrah (love) and a bottle of Cooper Mountain Pinot Gris (never tasted yet, organic, but I tend to hoard my PG- so who knows when _that_ will get drank drunken drinked is drank right?).

In the fridge is a partial bottle of Florida local cream sherry (why did I not respect my aunt for being a sherry drinker sooner? Why did I think that was an old person's drink?) actually still leftover from the hated-salmon- it's too potent to drink every night, and the horrid Toasted Head Shiraz- I don't want to ruin my pipes by pouring it out, like I did with the glass I had- I'm not sure what to do with it- age it in the fridge, I guess, and an unopened Florida native red- very sweet, foxy, one of my favorites, and the new Bogle. (If not refrigerated here, a room temp red would be 80 degrees!!)

Hopefully it will clear long enough for the torts to go out and graze.

SK- did you miss in the frenzy last night that the board of directors took a vote and decided the Fagalo Volcano should be awarded a consolation prize for speediness and creativeness, although not the correct answer? The CP has not been selected yet, but PM me if you would like to claim it.

My brevet cards came back all certified or whatever they do, from Paris today. Also three of the four medals. (The 200k is delayed). They are _gorgeous!!!!!!_ I have to take a picture of them when I rescue the camera out of the truck when it stops raining.

Medals: The medals noting the successful completion of the brevets are: a bronze medal for 200 KM, a silver-plate medal for 300 KM, a vermilion medal for 400 KM, a gold medal for 600 KM, and a silver medal for 1000 KM. The design of the medals will change after each PBP.

I'd kind of like to frame them. I have that one picture of me, at 300 miles, that isn't absolutely disgusting- I even allowed it to be published in the club newsletter. Probably I should wait until I get the Super Randonneur Medal (for the 200,300,400,600 series) and the R12 Award that I am working so hard on.

I missed that whole Fagalo Fagalo Fagalo post. That name fits him so well.

This is more like my usual picture- the guy who took it, Rob, the group leader, calls it "Cactus Dance." I was picking cactus leaves for the babies, trying not to get stabbed by something on my way back out from the bush. If there is any possible way to look dorky, or fat, or have a stupid expression instead of a cute smile- someone will take a picture of me doing it!

Lise
07-06-2006, 08:01 PM
Hmmm, which to tell first, which to tell first, ok, the one that doesn't involve surgery:

I got a letter from Rosann Cash! Me! She wrote to me! And you can tell she even addressed the envelope herself. So here's what happened. I have loved her music since way back, since the Seven Year Itch album, which is probably 20+ years ago. After her dad (Johnny Cash) died, she made this amazing album called Black Cadillac. I got it sometime last winter, and fell in love with the song "I'll Be Watching You". It says what I feel about my dad, who died when I was 5. So I wrote her a good-old-fashioned fan letter. Pen and paper. Mentioned the time I saw her in concert and she was pregnant. Mailed it off. Today there's a little note card from Capitol Records in my mailbox, on which she wrote: Dear Lise, Thank you for your very kind note- I'm glad the record has been meaningful to you. Best, Rosann Cash P.S. That baby I was pregnant with will be a senior in H.S. this year! It is so cool that she wrote back to me! :D :D :D

Thing #2: I liked the podiatrist. Y'all may be disappointed to hear that she is a straight (I assume), married (by the rings), pregnant woman. And not my type at all  But she's also a triathlete and marathon runner, so she gets it. She was gentle, patient, thorough, and informative. Gave me options, was open to my questions, all in all a really good Dr/pt interaction. Early on, as she's looking at my feet, she said, "Where did you get this foot structure? This is crazy!" Me: "My parents?" Her: "It's a doozy!" We were laughing. Yeah, I've got a huge bunion on the inner L foot, a small bunion on the outer L, a really narrow heel and very wide fore-foot, a high arch, I pronate, but "luckily" my 4th toe is totally deformed, or I'd have more neuromas than I already do!

She broke it down for me: My forefoot is wide, it's worse because of the honking bunion on the L, so the nerves between the 2nd & 3rd metatarsal heads get pinched (ie: inflammed = neuroma) with any activity/shoe wearing, and the toes go numb.

Plan: She's making custom orthotics for me to wear in new running shoes (it's time for a new pair, anyway). I'm wearing the narrowest biking shoes on the market, as it turns out. I've had them for 3 years, so I'm going to LBS and buying some wider, mens' shoes, and putting in OTC orthotics (she recommended something like "superfeet"? I wrote it down somewhere). Then in January, I'm having surgery to correct the bunion. I'll be totally off my foot for 10 days, then no impact sports for 8 weeks. I told her I'm doing a 1/2 IM in August next year, and she said she thinks it can be done.

I'm proud of myself for finally acting like a grown up and getting help for this. :) Now, to get caught up on emails and the latest dirt here at TE.

Sleep tight, my friends. L.

Lise - how cool to get a note from Rosann Cash - that's great!

I bought a bunch of great new CDs the other day (first new music since my 14-year relationship went belly-up - isn't it strange how music and exes become so intertwined?) and I really like these new CDs - especially Norah Jones, the new Emmylou Harris/Mark Knopfler duet CD, some new Beth Orton, and Van Morrison - Magic Time (Van the Man!).

Gold Standard Guy did not mention anything remotely political on the first date. The first date was pretty fun. We even looked at used bikes. Date #2 I could feel my eyes glazing over. Odd. I couldn't even tell if he was "left" or "right" wing, or just...peculiar!

I am such a doof! I never commented on this! HOW COOL!!! I am eagerly anticipating the pictures. I did not realize you got a medal for each one. Heck, in my opinion, you deserve to have them pinned on your chest on the steps of the Congress or something.

Trek 420- She got straight As thank you very much!!! :-)

Geez, Caligurl went wild!!!!!!!!

BTW- I've ridden at an >18mph average for 80 miles, including taking many pulls, at the beginning of the 400k brevet- and my ITB blew out at some point after lunch :-( Until the knee pain, it was really exciting.

And at TOSRV on the second day I rode in a huge peloton averaging 22-24 effortlessly for many, many miles but eventually got dropped on my nemesis, a hill. And if the peloton is traveling that fast- a dropped rider has very little chance of catching up alone.

So I'm not _always_ as slow as my comfortable pace.

But something I don't think certain people take into consideration is- brevets aren't a race, but there are many time cut-offs during the day. So the rider has to go as fast as they can to bank time, which may be needed later for mechanicals, sleeping, a slower pace due to an injury- whatever, but they are betting on a pace that won't leave them unable to continue.

Only the very elite riders can go out at a race pace and keep it up for the entire event.

Many people start out fast and drop from injury or nutritional/hydration/overheating/electrolyte issues.

Very few just aren't fast enough because of their average speed.

I thought Cali was great!

No, I'm not posting over there any more unless it's a drift. I like people to think I'm slow. I like being slow. It's not a race UNLESS IT'S A RACE.

I was at a stop light on the way home. A big peloton of Cattle Egrets flew over, in a V formation. Then came a small group of stragglers, in a ragged V, still in sight of the peloton. Then, after a long time, a single bird. I wonder if he could even see the others. I wonder if he was trying desperately to catch up, or if he was going at his own pace.

The thing about Centurys and Doubles, compared to 200ks and 300ks and 400ks (brevets) is Centurys and Doubles are supported. You have SAG stops with yummy foods and drinks. You have roaming mechanical support. You have arrows painted on the ground. You might be riding with 2000 other people. In a brevet, you stop at convenience stores. It is against the rules to get assistance outside the Controls. If you have a mechanical, there is no SAG vehicle. You get a sheet of paper, and are responsible for following the directions. A huge ride might see 40-50 riders. An average ride has 20-30. On a Century, if you don't feel like stopping at a SAG, if you are carrying enough on your own, you don't have to. In a brevet, you HAVE TO stop at roughly 30 mile intervals, park your bike, dig out your brevet card, go in the store, have the clerk sign and stamp it.

I would like to nominate chicken chow mein as the most perfect pre-cycling food.

The wine of the evening will be Bogle Petite Sirah. In recent years the Bogle Petite Sirah has collected many accolades including 10 gold medals in the last 3 years, "Best Buy" 4 years in a row by Wine Spectator magazine and also voted "Top 100 Best Buys of 2005" by Wine Enthusiast magazine.

And I got it on sale!!

I love looking at my medals. What is vermillion?

I'm wondering which Terry Zero is more like my Vitesse, the X or the Y. I like skinny seat and long narrow nose. I need to measure Vitesse. I am curious to see how the Balckwell Flow feels tomorrow, when the girlie bits are good as new, as opposed to last Sunday after the 140 mile ride Saturday.

I'm thinking I need a new seat post to facilitate saddle switching, probably aluminum, because then I won't be breaking the rule about not mounting a rack on a carbon post, but am not sure what to get. I have a Thomson on my MTB, which I really like, but the adjustment is pretty fiddly.

What do you guys think is the difference, in feel, between aluminium, carbon and titanium??

Can we pleasssssssse stay away from afterbirth talk. For some reason the whole eating the placenta thing really grosses me out. That surely would be more pleasant that people telling us we're slow, though!

And yes Nanci - I agree with Trek. You absolutely do not ever never ever need to justify anything to us! Lordy woman - you ride longer in one ride than I do over the whole month, or multiple months sometimes! And you've accomplished that ability in only one year of real road riding. I'm just blown away by that!

Someday I'll get to do a long ride that doesn't involve endless 5 mile loops. The road crews are currently putting humungo chunks of gravel down where I could potentially ride out of town (now that the nasty dog is gone). They're "resurfacing" the road. I'm thinking that Serenity isn't going to like that much. So alas, my 5mile loop it is. It's better than nothing, right? Just think of how strong my legs will be from all of those start/stops at stop signs. ;)

Nanci - I have no idea on the seatpost question, but if you need me to take any measurements on the Zero X, let me know.

What's a good quick food to eat in the early morning before a relatively short ride (30-35 miles)? Chicken chow mein, while good, may not work at 6am...I've been feeling like I'm just dragging lately. I think I'm not eating enough to keep up with my rides/runs. I'm going to pay close attention to what I eat this week and see how many calories I'm taking in. I really think that's why I've been feeling sick on/off for the past month or so.

Cali did great - she definitely got her point across!

Nanci, I'd suggest a 2nd seatpost that you just leave attached to the 2nd saddle and pull the whole contraption when you want to switch saddles. Then, your finely tuned angles, setback and height don't change each time. Just mark the height with some tape, pull, and shove in the other post.

Ritchey makes some really nice quality aluminum seatposts. The new Specialized Pave has a great clamp on it but it is carbon. You might see if they make an aluminum version. The head has infinite adjustment points.

I personally like ti rails in my saddles. I can feel the rails flex on hard bumps.

Now in my old life, when I had horses, and they had babies, we had to save the placenta in a big five gallon bucket for the vet to inspect. Luckily, the babies were born in early spring, and the vet was prompt in arriving for the check up.

Then we buried it.

Well, the SOFA KING made me laugh once more, so nice work and thank you!

Isn't that weird, though? I always think I want to live out in the countryside. In the PNW, it's often the islands, like Whidbey, or some of the little San Juans, that I yearn after. Then I spend some time there and even while loving it, think, "Huh. Do I really want to live in a place with survivalists camping in the backwoods?" I go to the Utah desert to go rock-hunting, and spend half my time thinking how stunning that desert is and the other half downright amazed by the amount of trash, beer cans, broken bottles, and signs full of bullet holes.

Not that the city is any more sane, come to think of it.

Yeah, SOFA KING is good!

I was in Jamaica, in a small town on the NE coast, working for about 2 months a few years ago. I was so grateful to get back to Chicago where it's quiet and the streets are clean. Big city life. I couldn't swim in the ocean every day, but neither was I breathing burning garbage and listening to a cacaphony of roosters/raggae/yelling/horns/church services 24/7.

I live in a pretty quiet neighborhood except for the one building across the street. Grrrrr. I wish I had a noise disabler ray gun to turn off their radios/car horns/yelling. No gun shots (I don't think), but they're still blowing up things from the 4th.

The plan today was to swim train. First thought: Ride bike to lake and swim in wet suit. Nixed. Too tired. Second thought: Ride bike to neighborhood park district pool, swim outdoors. Not in wet suit (too wierd). Nixed. Too chilly. Third thought: Ride bike to YMCA, swim indoors. Just nixed that one. I am too danged tired. I've eaten my bowl of cereal, I think I'll watch Napolean Dynamite, and go to bed.

Tomorrow is a longer training run. Then, if I'm feeling energetic, I can pack up the wetsuit and ride down to the lake and give it a shot. No dates, nada this weekend. Fine with me. Got a fundraiser for a sick nurse at work tomorrow night, 3 yr old niece coming over for a playdate Sunday, then start a 24 hr call Sunday night.

Good grief, as I re-read my post about not talking about placentas, I sound downright cranky! Not my intent. Sorry I gave you some bad moments there, fishdr. Some things that sound funny in my head do not translate well to the page. :(

Nanci, that is a good question. And, regarding placentas, of whom is it, really? The mom? The baby? The union of sperm and egg produce both baby and placenta, so it can't really be said to be of the mom alone. Makes me think of some animals who very neatly clean up the scene after the babies are born.

Good grief, as I re-read my post about not talking about placentas, I sound downright cranky! Not my intent. Sorry I gave you some bad moments there, fishdr. Some things that sound funny in my head do not translate well to the page. :(

Baby. Therefore, the placenta isn't "of" the mom any more (or less, I suppose) than the baby is "of" the mom.

When Subservient Chicken first came out, several years ago, you could watch the commercials on the Internet. They were _so_ weird, having to do with these two girls making him do things. I never saw him on TV, though, but then, just last week, there he was!!

Wellll...your DNA is yours, right? But they can tell who your mom and dad are (or aren't) by comparing your DNA with theirs. Sperm + egg = 4 cells that multiply and multiply and multiply...it is fascinating. Embryology is really cool. The whole kit'n'kaboodle of baby, placenta, bag of waters comes from those first 4 cells. Once those two come together, all bets are off. Sperm was dad's, egg was mom's, but now they're a new creation. Any wonder I dig my job? :D

I was in a bad mood after work, but I just got to learn about aluminum seat posts, cannibalism, pooping on the floor, and placenta.

This thread is great.

In other news, I have finally decided to battle the downstairs neighbors. Last night my apartment was so full of their cigarette smoke that it woke me up at 4am. After being a building manager in college, there is very little that I can't sleep through.

My cats were coughing. So, I called the building manager up to take a whiff, and he agreed that it was excessive. Since this building allows smoking, I don't think he can do anything but ask them to shut their outside door, but that would be a huge help. He said he'd speak to the owner, because there was no reason why it should be that bad. They're also *really* loud (lease has a quiet clause) and have been spoken to at least twice in the last two weeks for noise (I've been gone for half of that) so that might provide some leverage, but...

If they want to smoke, it's their decision, but it's also my decision not to. I would really, really like to not have to move because of them. This isn't healthy for me or my fuzzballs. :(

Good morning thread drifters!

Oh, man, the viedos are hilarious! Those fish. What a trip! How long did it take to teach them to line up for their chow?

I'm up at 5:20 AM, eating my bagel with pb, so I can go back to bed and get up at 6:30 to go run. That's the way I like to do it, but I'm seldom in bed on time to stand getting up to eat early.

I don't even know who those people were that had the party across the way last night. I've never seen them in the neighborhood. It was a party in the garage, with the car as their sound system. I just shut all the windows, put on the AC, went to sleep.

I see we're almost on page 100. Party? How about the 2,000th post? :D

Go Eden!!:)

I DEFINITELY was not in on it... "You know what annoyes me even more and I think at least one of you has been in on it. Those threads that end up "I'm so thin and scrawny that size 0 and 2 don't fit me."

Geez, I had to rip up the carpet in my bathroom last night so the floor could try to dry- it's all Peter Turkey Neck Reid's fault. :D

I think I have conquered one of the things that makes me late for group rides: now I put on sunscreen as soon as I get out of bed. Before it was last minute, only it takes longer than a minute!!

A thread I have been avoiding is "Cheat Day" or something. Because I don't want to disclose that I have been on a Cheat All-Inclusive January-July.

Today's ride should be nice- starting out at 75 and only getting to 87F. Doesn't look like much chance of rain. Then lunch at Tim's Fast Nickel, where Tim will be making barbeque. It's this tiny convenience store, made of concrete blocks, with bars in the door and windows. Some of the bars are painted on to make it look like more:eek: Most of the south cycling rides stop there. Before I knew Tim and wife- I thought it looked like and was in the neighborhood of where you'd go to buy crack- but out in the country. You see a lot of guys going and coming out with a beer in a paper sack. I'll take my camera.

Lise, the fish were always like that. My friends bought that house, and they were there. I'm the one who figured out how to get them to come out on land. Because I am an animal trouble maker! I also found out that you can kneel on the bank and they will line up with their mouths open and you just pour the food in. What hogs!! The place I work serves fried catfish for breakfast- can you believe that??I tried it once...um, no. But when I was a kid, at the cabin, sometimes we'd fish really early, then eat friend sunfish or bass for breakfast, so I guess that's kind of the same thing.

OMG - go out to dinner with your tri-girlfriends and go to bed early and then find 5 new pages of TD to catch up on in the morning.

A good friend bought me a first tri/40th birthday gift - a pink running cap and pink ribbon running socks. I would wear them sunday but they would seriously clash with the black and red tri gear that I have planned.

Between real life friends and TE/TD friends it is so awesome how supportive everyone I know has been. I should probably really mention dh in that - he has been great about time for training.

Now I just have to survive the actual event.

I went for a run this morning--doing better, but not yet where I want to be. I guess that's why they call it "training", eh?

Today I'm riding down to Lake Michigan and swimming in the wetsuit. I realized I was feeling like an imposter, not a real triathlete, not "deserving" of a wet suit. As if the "real" triathletes would laugh at me...well, they may. But I still would benefit from swim training in my wet suit.

Insomniac snap here. Woke up at 4:00, never did get back to sleep. Arrgh. Of course the dog decided it must be time to get up too, so she starts bouncing around on the bed.

She was diagnosed with hip displaysia (sp?) yesterday, she's been limping and favoring her right hind leg for a couple of days. Got her on doggie motrin for 2 weeks, along with glucosamine. The drugs have kicked in and she's acting like her old self - obnoxious. "Hey Mom! It's 4:30! Shouldn't we think about getting out of bed and running around the house like a crazy dog?" Bounce, bounce, bounce. "GOOD MORNING! Doesn't my nose feel good against the back of your neck?!?!?"

Knotted--yeah, that was a toy puffer fish you saw on the tandem rack. Boy, you have good eyes! BUT the puffer fish has just been retired for a fire-spitting Gamera instead: Guardian of the Earth and Protector of Children, our favorite Japanese movie monster. What could be better than a flying turtle that spins in the air and shoots out fire? Wish I could do that! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamera

N--hearing you laughing in the snake video was just hilarious while Cathy was trying to talk to you in a sober, responsible fashion. Your snake reminded me of a scorpion we met up with while we were rock hunting in high desert Oregon. Chris was poking into a cliff face with a chisel, and out came a scorpion. All it did was climb up the cliff about six inches, and curl its tail around itself, trying to hide. I think it just wanted to finish its nap, which seemed like such a reasonable approach to life. Also, I can't believe you actually had to rip up that carpet! You really DID flood the bathroom doing the Reid google thing.

Lise--Go girl in that wetsuit. Let us know how it was!

Today was to be the big day I was going to finally swim in my wetsuit. I waited until later afternoon, hoping to miss the biggest crowds at the beach. I knew I'd be, well, noticed, putting on a full wetsuit and entering the water amidst the bikini'd babes, but, so it goes. I put on my tri-shorts and a bra I can swim in. Practiced putting on the wetsuit at home. Sweaty, but fine. Packed up the whole kit 'n' kaboodle. Changed the Serfas tri seat out for my regular Serfas saddle, because my girly bits just couldn't take it anymore! Proud of myself for changing my own saddle.

Rode the Bianchi 6 miles down to the beach where I can swim 1/2 mile along the sea wall. Spread out my towel, pulled out my wetsuit, and heard, "Hey! You can't go in the water!" Ignoring this, as I figured it was addressed to anyone BUT me, I put my first foot in the wetsuit. "Hey! You with the wetsuit! You can't go in the water!" Huh?

I turned around, and a guy lying on his towel sits up and says, "You can't go in the water." "Why?" I reply. "E. Coli. Red flag.", he says, pointing to the, indeed, red flag flying from the lifeguard's chair. Crap.

Packed the whole thing back up and rode 6 miles back home with a wetsuit strapped to my back. Sheesh.

Now I get to learn how to check for water pollution levels and figure that into when I can swim in the lake with the wetsuit! I may just swim train in pools and swim once or twice in the lake with the wetsuit prior to the tri. MWBR.

Lise, that is the thing I hate the most about living in Chicago. I grew up on the ocean and I can remember only a handful of times we couldn't swim. Here it is like at least once per week. It really freaks me out when Chicago closes the water, but Evanston is open. um, hello, same lake. The day that really pissed me off, I got a babysitter one day when the boys were little just cause my sanity and their safety was at stake (kidding on their safety, but you get my meaning). I got all ready to go for a swim, rode my bike to the beach and it was closed cause the waves were too big. I thought my head was going to explode. I used to live for big wave days.

My friend and I swam in open water this morning. We're both doing the Danskin (total newbies who are just hoping to finish) in August. We did 2/3 the distance we'll need. Last time we did 1/2. We're working up to that half mile.

I use a wetsuit, cuz I suck as a swimmer. She's just in her bra top and tri shorts.

This time went MUCH better than last time. I didn't have to rest nearly as often.

While we were at the beach we saw a homeless dude sleeping and then playing guitar (later he swam, too, in his undies) and an older woman in her 60's or 70's going nekkid as she changed from her clothes to her swimsuit.

Nobody batted an eye. Hey, it's Seattle...

Lise
07-08-2006, 03:24 PM
KN, you will most certainly finish. And probably not last. Then you'll be hooked! It is quite a feeling. :D

Brina--I know what you mean. How can they close some beaches, but not others? The current's flowing away from my beach? One year the Accenture tri almost became a duathlon when they thought they'd have to close Madison harbor for pollution. Jeez. I had been thinking I might do Accenture next year...but that swim sux!

I want that Zero X, too. There is no way I'm riding on the Serfas tri saddle anymore. I may call LBS tomorrow and see if they'll order it for me. I can take the Serfas back in when the Terry arrives.

Now I'm going to try to ride my bike (the Larkspur, not the Bianchi) in a skirt to a bar. (No, TD'rs, this is not a new dating strategy! :p ) One of the nurses at work got very, very sick, and has been hospitalized for nearly a month. They're having a fundraiser for her in a neighborhood where one can only dream of finding a parking place. So, inspired by the girl on the T9 cover, I'm off! :D

Nanci - gee, did you learn a lot at traffic school? Sounds like it was quite productive. I love the tank with the blue flower (from the pic). Super cute!

I ordered some new tubes. Watched the Tour looking at all of those nicely inflated tires. I could barely look at my bike when I walked through the garage. I soooo wanted to ride this morning! Tubes should be in by end of the week. I leave next Mon.for St. Johns, so hopefully I can get a good ride in before then. I did NOT order them from Performance. Last time (you might recall my endless whining) it took forever for them to show up (almost 2 weeks).

I did get the next round of squash and green beans planted in the garden, though. Went for a "swim" in our little backyard pool (15ft diameter x 4 ft deep..........AND - FishJr is really starting to swim! She has the arms going in addition to the legs now - she was swimming freestyle! A bunch of times! I couldn't believe my eyes!

Have fun Lise and good luck with the skirt!

One other thing - I found some strange socks at Wallyworld today (grrrrrrrrr). They are by Danskin, are wicking (nothing weird yet I know), and they have arch support. It's a band that goes around the middle of your foot (ah - the arch - duh). I've been wearing them all day to test them out. I bought some with med/heavy cushioning for running. The ones I'm wearing today have light cushioning. When I have shoes on I can't feel the arch support, but they are comfy. When I just have them on around the house (no shoes) I feel it. It's odd. Ever seen anything like this??? Or am I just a dork? You don't have to answer that...
