So would it be crazy to try to ride a century tomorrow on the fixed gear? It's relatively flat from what I gather, and the gear is pretty easy for me so hills shouldn't be too heinous. Though downhill might be interesting....

Just toying around.

Sounds like h*ll will have a great group. I'll bring a bottle of wine and the parcheesi.

Some joke I read implied that the heat of h*ll was caused by the friction of the outer bounds expanding to allow space for the sheer number of souls going there every day. (allowing for all the various things that lead one to go there)

*shrugs* I'll bring the hard cider and porter. For all we know, anything stronger would ignite. ;)

On a merrier subject:
The weather today was pretty nice. Rainy here and there, but relatively warm. I managed to see it rain during a bright, sunny spell, blue, clear sky and everything. An old tale says it's a sign foxes are getting married :D

Lise - probably a good thing you decided not to do this one.

Forecast today is for strong storms to develop in the afternoon. That's not what's as depressing as the 15-25 mph winds out of the south for today. The route goes north into WI then back down. I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. :D Gears will certainly be used today!

Enjoy your Sunday everyone.

But adiabatic expansion always leads to cooling. Is hell adiabatic? Does it have an atmosphere? Does it obey the hydrostatic equation and typical mass conservation laws? A new forefront for scientific investigation.

Yep, it doesn't look like a great biking day today. I know I made the right choice when I realized I just didn't have the training to do it enjoyably. I could ride 100 miles, but it wouldn't be as fun as it should.

I was at the UIC Pavillion last night, for the big anniversary celebration of that little 12 step group I'm part of. I have a service committment, and mainly stood, (sometimes walked) in heels, on a cement floor, for 5 hours. They were the lowest heels I own, but still. My legs and feet hurt. I must've kicked myself, too, because at one point I looked down and had blood on my ankle! I don't hurt myself this much riding a bike!

Have a great century, beta. Looking forward to the report. L.

Gee, you rode 52 miles, KY! after my 30 and after some nice man stopped and jumpstarted my car (the battery just didn't last 5 hours of sitting with the headlights on) i went home and... finished a book.

but first i went to Elliott Bay Bicycle to give them
the matching purple and black handlebar tape for our tandem. DH will have new handlebars with bar end shifters now. I took a look, they're pretty cool. (my handlebars already have the purple and black...)

Glad you got your car jumpstarted. Next time we should go with you to your car to make sure you didn't leave your lights on again!

After I got home I realized that not only had I done my longest ride yet on the commutermobile, it may also have been my last long ride on it for a while. When I get Flosshilde back from RC the commutermobile will go to SKnot until he outgrows it.

Wonder how much faster I'll go on a road bike? (I'm sure the lavender tape will add a mile or two per hour!:D )

There's a shipping envelope on my desk at work (for the stamps that get donated to Easter Seals, long story) and a post office in the Kaiser Bldg.

Well, from a book by Tom Holt called Expecting Someone Taller. It's kind of a spoof of the Ring Saga. There's a ditzy smartass (but sweet) character, Flosshilde the Rhine Maiden. My favorite.

So, in finest stream-of-conciousness, "Flosshilde" came to me as the right name for the Waterford. Wisconsin. Beer. Norse/Germanic. Water/Rhine. Blonde/Gold. Ditzy smart@ss. Sweet. Beautiful. Bugs Bunny.

Yup, Bugs Bunny. Singing. As in "oh Brunhilde, you're so lovely" (Elmer Fudd as Siegfried) "Yes I know it, I can't help it." (Bugs as Brunhilde)

Just switch the valkyrie Brunhilde for Flosshilde and you've got the soundtrack. And yes, I did sing it to her as I was getting her out of the box.

I'm a dork. But a sweet ditzy smart@ss dork.

Odin hired two giants, Fasoult and Fafnir, to build Valhalla. In exchange for their work, he promised to give them his sister-in-law Frigg. Unfortunately, this was a promise he never intended to keep. Freyja gets mad at Odin for even PRETENDING to give away her sister... So the giants come to collect their due, Odin commands Loki to find *someone else*. So Loki does what Loki does best... telling the two giants about Alberich/Andarvi and the Rheingold. The promise of power and the ability to escape from the deal with the giants interests the gods, even Odin himself...

...and that starts the chain of events for Ragnarok.

...this all vrom a Wagnerian opera "Der Ring des Nibelungen"

Hey there!

I'm back from BR and we had a VERY successful trip! We found a place for my son and daughter to go. It's not a daycare center it's a learning center. Very cool place. They conduct Preschool - teaching them to read, and learn geography, science, math, french, and so on. It looks like she'll learn more there than she would where she is now. They also take younger children and teach them French, early reading skills, counting, colors, etc. Very awesome place! Yippee!

We also .... da da da daaaaa.... drumroll... found a house! It's brand spanking new and is huge! We paid less per sq ft than we sold our current house for! Yippee! I'm going to put some of the pics on photobucket - I'll let you know when I have them posted.

Mr. Fish made good progress on getting grad school and a job arranged - so yippe there, too!

And - we had a pleasant visit with in-laws! Freaky!

I'll catch up on the 10 pages of TD that I missed tomorrow or so. We have a dinner thing tonight - after driving all day. Fun times I tell you!

Later ladies!

The Norse gods were a lot more 'human' than those of other mythologies, I think. I mean, why would a god give one of his eyes to drink of the well of wisdom? There are some things best not asked.

Hey Lise - We finished just as it started to thunder up in Evanston. 106 miles total. It was windy as expected on the route back. There were 6 of us so we did a paceline as much as possible to help with fatigue. It was a very nice route, even with a lap around the Kenosha velodrome track. I'm beat. Just ate a heaping mound of pasta, and will proceed to veg. I'll be asleep in an hour :D

Thanks for your concern :) I did get stuck in traffic from the Bears game letting out on the way home. There's always traffic isn't there?

I did get a new Livestrong bracelet today. And a waterbottle.

On an unrelated note, have you all seen the movie "Dodgeball"? The character who sets me off the most is Jason Bateman's as the dumb sports commentator. I really liked him on Arrested Development. Before that, jeez the last time I remember seeing him in something was the Hogan Family

Beta! I'm so glad you didn't get slammed with the rain. I hope you drove to Evanston? I'm also glad I didn't try to do the ride. I would not have been up for it, and I have no experience with pacelines. As someone pointed out, triathlon's taught me to stay well back of other riders.

I'm thinking next year will be the 1/2 IM, the Accenture sprint, and then maybe this North Shore Century. The year after that, short runs, sprint tris, long rides. The best laid plans, right? But that's how I see it.

Fish! Great news all around! I am so happy for you all, and looking forward to pictures.

Spoke on the phone with a guy from Match today. Nice conversation, seems like a cool guy. Raising his 13 year old daughter, wife died when the girl was an infant. Main disadvantage at this point: He lives waaaay out in the hinterlands. (Plainfield, for those in the know). I am such a city girl. Who knows though? MW, as always, BR! :D We're going to meet sometime this week. I hope he plans something and invites me. I cleaned out my basement storage locker today, and I threw away all KINDS of stuff. Stuff I was saving from my former life, basically evidence of my misery. Journals, paintings I'd made. I did a little ritual before hand, and burned one page from the journal I kept in the last year of my marriage. It felt wonderful to get rid of all that stuff. Some is going to the resale, most went into the garbage. My locker is so clean and organized now. It won't be a battle to find things. I also brought up the "fall and winter" boxes. They'll live in my bedroom for a month or two, no doubt. I haven't figured out any more gracious way to do the seasonal transition thing.

I was driving home from the grocery store- getting potatoes and cranberry sauce for my turkey dinner. Saw this thing that looked like a small bird, sitting upright in the road. As I blew past it, it fluttered around in the wind, but didn't move or fall over. So, as I drove on, under this time pressure to get home, peel the potatoes, boil the potatoes, mash the potatoes, I made it half a mile before deciding to turn back. Sure enough, as I run out into traffic, it's a little yellow and green bird- hit by a car, but still bright eyed and fighting. I scoop him up and get in the car and rush for home, planning to call the rehab place, leave a message, bring him in. Bird is biting my thumb, painfully, and making a growling noise. When I get home, and inspect him, his wing is broken, and there is way too much blood. I am hopeful, though- all other extremities are intact, and his eyes are bright. But, as I am holding him in one hand and cutting vet wrap to immobilize the wing, he closes first one eye, then the other. I wrap him up, but he begins agonal breathing. In a minute, he is lifeless- gone. I have him wrapped in a paper towel, and for a minute, think of throwing him in the trash, but can't. I bring him out under the ancient mimosa tree and bury him, wrapped up neatly, under a cement block that lives under the tree. At least he died somewhat peacefully, instead of being smashed by a car, again.

And it's only just begun. Really, it began last week when I got rid of a lot of clothes. Stuff I was saving because it was "nice", or someone had given it to me...except that I didn't like it! ----->woosh!----> out it goes!

Next: Art/craft supplies and cross-stitch supplies. I used to make a lot of cross-stitch, and I still love it, but who has time? The art/craft stuff is from when I was trying to be the perfect wife with the perfect home (sheesh  ), and, failing that, to express my misery in paint. I'll probably hang onto the oil paints. I love the smell and texture of them, even if I'm not much of an artist. Probably the tubes of acrylics, too. But not all the craft stuff. I am done with that. Except my glue gun. Just used that tonight! A glue gun is a tool, like a drill. Everyone should have both.

At the volunteer dinner last night, a patient of mine was there. It was really strange. Someone who was in a horrible accident, who had a 1:500 chance of living, they said. She might be joining my group. It's so weird to see people out of context.

Just started watching Grey's Anatomy recently and LOVE it.

Out of context sightings--I have seen fellow ballet dancers (back in that day) in public places whom I could not recognize because they had street clothes on and their hair down.

And re that memento burning stuff: I once wrote a letter to an ex that for the first time was really blunt about all the crappy stuff he did and was. Had the whole lunch-with-girlfriends-ceremonial-burning-of-letter-in-fireplace thing. Then I sent him a copy anyway. Believe me, he deserved to see it. That was 20 years ago and it still makes me laugh and I'm still absolutely glad I did it. It could only have done him good.

I hate when I find an animal- always a bird, that's still alive but quite obviously beyond repair.

I was driving to my ride meeting place Saturday morning, and there was a suicide squirrel at the side of the road, so I started gently beeping my horn at him (not like that really helps squirrels- but birds can figure it out!). Around the bend, as I was beeping, came a cyclist- he probably thought I was honking at him, like "What did I do??" Squirrel decided to go back into the yard.

Okay - my feeble attempt to catch up on TD...

Nanci - good attempt at saving the bird. Sorry he didn't make it.

Lise - Have we names this guy yet? He sounds promising. A little distance could be good - won't get crowded that way.

Knotted - glad you finally have the new bike in hand!

Kit - I'm lost - how did the interview go?

Snap - any more word on the promotion? That did sound promising

Salsa - bees are important for honey production and crop pollination. Those two things go hand in hand.

Windance - a date??????

OK - that's all I can do for now. I'll catch back with you later. I'm swamped at work trying to get all of those ducks in a row. And - now I get to shop for a fridge (for the house).

My bike may be done with her surgery tomorrow...

Kit - I'm lost - how did the interview go?

I get lost, too.

This is interview 3, after finding out after two interviews one of my references had changed his phone # and had just forgotten to tell me. Grr. Then he got all upset that I was mad at him. Grr.

So Interview 3 went well. It was for an Administrative (personal) Assistant to a fairly prominant Financial Advisor. I looked good (I think) felt mostly awake, and was grounded/centered enough to answer all his questions in ways that provoked the gent to say he "liked [my] way of thinking" I'm excited about it, but after my previous experiences, I'm not really getting my hopes up too much. I like to ask a final question, something like "After speaking with you, I feel great about this position; do you have any concerns about my fitness for the job?" It gives a decent chance to counter any objections/curiosities they might have. He said, fairly enthusiastically, that he thought I'd be a great fit, and that I should hear back regarding the 2nd round of interviews. Sweet. :)

So there you have it. MWBR.

I had a bad day at work. Rephrase that. At the job. (I love my work, I hate my job) I love my patients, don't get me wrong. It's the politics that make me have conniptions.

So I broke my own rule, and spent BIKE MONEY on a bottle of red wine. Because I'm grumpy. And I need it more than the bike does. Costco. Concha Y Toro. Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. Mutt-wine.

I need to get l@id. It's been a year since I got any. Grump grump grump.

Pardon me while I have a b!tchy moment. Or three.

Thanks! :D I can't take the credit for the question, though, it was on FAQ farm. AND, you're allowed all the b!tchy moments you need, Knotted, you deserve them.

I was bad and spent "everything else" money on my biking habit. OMG though, $120 rain jacket for $30. Couldn't believe it. I know, I'm bad. I shall be beaten, but seriously. Wow. Can't believe I lost my good biking jacket this summer, though... $30 idiot tax.
That and a semi-waterproof (originally $40) $20 trunk bag so I can go to the gym in peace without carrying everything in my backpack. I'm okay with it for shorter rides, but after doing the lats, back rows, etc, Kitsu's NOT going to be carrying ANYTHING on THOSE shoulders, thankyouverymuch.

O.m.G. Is that really adding up to $50? *hides* Bad paycheck to do that on. D'oh.

Choco is obviously a highly handsome and talented little guy. Nanci, how old is he? My animal rescue neighbor was telling me that snakes have to be trained early-early to eat dead food, so sounds like he IS pretty darn precocious and active. A good baby.

Okay, first of all - ALOHA.

Hawaii (the BIIIIG ISLAND) is great. We saw sea turtles and a lot of fish. The PP pointed at every clown fish we saw - like they were Nemo or something. I personally really liked the trigger fish and the school of whatever it was that made me feel like I was part of their whole fish SWARM. Very cool.

And the sea turtles. They're as old as we are, and they are so quiet and gentle, and they swim up and then stick their beakky little faces out of the water to breathe. And their eyes are amazing.

But back to why Salsa is MEAN. I am reading this TE book and it is just wonderful, but I can just tell, and I won't say any more. But I know it will be a tear jerker.

Fish you're next on the book list so get the kleenex ready.

Okay. I have a mai tai to finish. Love to you all. Trade winds don't suck.

(Oh, but I did have a huge klutzy fall and landed on the fat part of my hand by my thumb, and maybe it is the coumadin at work but it's swollen like crazy and I can't bend my thumb right. I don't feel like I need to throw up from pain any more so it is not broken. Gosh what a klutz. Glad I don't have to ride a bike right now.... )

But it's the FUNNIEST tear jerker you'll ever read, and I promise you all will feel okay at the end. And there is still one requirement: to post your favorite malapropism or mixed metaphor.

Kit, good luck with the job. Great last question, thanks for sharing it. That bike jacket sounds like an INCREDIBLE deal. You'd be kicking yourself around the block if you *hadn't* gotten it.

MP--aaahhhhh, that all sounds so wonderful! I am so happy for you guys. Whoops--except for the hand part. Hope that's healing up.

Nanci, how wonderful that Choco is turning out to be a great little snakey companion. Does your BF enjoy handling them as much as you do?

I had a great day. Started with going to the new chiropractor, who does Active Release Technique. I read about it in a local sports mag, and it sounded like the kind of trigger point release stuff I was trying to do on myself at home. I told him the main thing was my R elbow, but he also worked on my L hip and my shoulders. Told me I have some calcified lymph nodes in my neck. My sister and I were laughing ourselves to tears about that tonight. I was often sick as a kid with upper resp. stuff. We pictured my lymph nodes like little dead hampsters, having just given up the ghost...perhaps you had to be there. :p

Anyway. He (the chiro) is young, handsome, and very nice. Appropriately medical with me, but aware that I deliver babies, don't do ortho, so wasn't *too* technical with me. At one point, he was leaning on me to do an adjustment, and I said, "oof". He said, "You should have picked a lighter chiropractor!" :p http://www.activebodychiro.com/doctors.htm (top guy on the page. Actually cuter than picture indicates.) Was in the medical tent for Kona IM '03. Of course I asked if he'd met PR. :D Nope, but he saw him. Sigh. THE POINT, LISE? He did electro stim and ice to the elbow, a lot of adjustments, then put some tape on my arm, which I'm to leave on until it falls off. Sort of stretchy cloth tape. Seems unlikely to be pulling or holding anything in place, but OK.

Knotted, what do you know about this tape thing? Do your docs use it? Sorry work sucked so badly today. You definitely need to get laid. All your pals at TD will back you up on this, I feel sure.

Lise - it sounds like kineseo tape. Very cool stuff, works like magic sometimes. The adhesive is acrylic, so leave it on until it falls off. when the edges start to peel, trim the edges off with scissors. Once it comes off, it won't go back on.

Yep, that's what he called it. It seems like it couldn't possibly do anything, but he told me I'd think that...(Hey, I think I just figured out that this elbow pain is caused by having to type OVER a cat! :p) Thanks for the vote of confidence. It's scary putting myself in someone else's hands. At one point, when he was working on my hip, it was so intense I said, "no!" immediately followed by, "I didn't mean that. Sorry." I understand, though. I do stuff to my patients that's sometimes painful and often scary.

I didn't know that PTs didn't like chiros. Hmmm. Competition? I had a great experience some years ago with a PT who specialized in pelvic pain. Frankly, she did a lot of the same stuff this guy is doing. A good clinician is a good clinician.

Then tonight had dinner with my sister at a Turkish cafe near my house, and went to get pedicures! Her treat, a belated b-day gift. Then we had the luxury of just hanging out at Starbucks and talking. It's so seldom the two of us, no kids, no Mom, no pressures. We have a great time together, and laugh at the same warped stuff. (Lymph nodes like dead hampsters  )

I have a date with the guy from Plainfield on Wed afternoon. He seems like a nice guy--we shall see if that elusive chemistry is there. The cool teacher guy that I actually emailed hasn't replied. I'm trying to remember that it may be that his type is petite brunettes, or whatever.

The smoker is trying to talk me out of my "non-negotiable" stance about not dating smokers. Jeez. Don't they get it? It's such a give away about their character. The last person who over rode my non-negotiables (I allowed them to be over ridden!) ended up hitting me, etc. I'm just not replying to him. When his reply to my "I don't date smokers" was "C'mon, Lise, I said I'd smoke outside!" ... uh, yeah. No. I'm just not replying.

Nuts? Of course not. I got a trunk pack recently and it's great. No more commuting to work with a sweaty fanny pack. Only problem is that I have to take off my spare tire bag from behind the saddle and put it in the trunk because they don't both fit. Very stable too. Better than panniers in that regard.

Lise - yes, I've bruised my share of patients. I admit it. I even bruised one of my clinical instructors. Don't worry unless it turns into a huge or unusual bruise. Getting down to the lower layers of tissue or into the joint capsule sometimes impacts the upper layers of tissue. Don't take off the kineseo, it will help clear out the bruising. There are kineseo patterns specifically for bruising. They are nothing short of miraculous. (Kineseo tape is wild stuff!) Did your chiro mention "pushed radius syndrome"? I wouldn't know without seeing you, but it sounds like something (among others) he's treating. I hate to sound cliche'd, but "trust the process."

The most traumatized I think I've ever been in my life while conscious was inflicted on my by a PT. I was in serious danger of passing out for 30 minutes after I left her office. Collapsing in a sobbing heap was barely avoided too (actually, it was only partially avoided). She was working on my frozen shoulder (post collarbone fracture) and did too much at once. I suppose I should have screamed and yelled for her to stop, but I'm the stoic sort. Couldn't keep a few tears from rolling down my face while she worked on me though. Afterwards the pain was so deep in the joint that I simply felt traumatized. Suppose I shouldn't compain too much as I do have a working shoulder again, thanks to PT. Knotted, do you ever traumatize your patients? Lise, hope the chiro does good things for you.

yes, I have traumatized my patients. I've made a few cry. But they love me anyway. Cuz I'm so dang sweet...

Deb, frozen shoulder seriously sucks. It is one of the hardest things to treat. The PT joke is that frozen shoulder goes away after 6 months of treatment, or after 12 months of leaving it alone.

I give some of my patients gold stars (honest to gawd!) for putting up with tough stuff. The funny thing is that most of them want me to stick the stars on either the back of their hands or on the tips (toes) of their shoes.

What do you mean it goes away after 12 month of leaving it alone? You're not serious are you? I went through all that for nothing?

My PT only traumatized me once. I think she figured out she overdid it when I stood up and almost passed out. But I was such a diligent patient at my home exercises that I finished in only 4 months. I was doing 3 hours per day of exercises. *Need to bike again * must exercise * good motivation.

PT, ladies, go to PT!! I can't help much without actually seeing your shoulders (umm, that sounds bad. but I mean it in a professional way). The shoulder is so wacky that you really should go to PT for anything, even years later. Did you know your arm isn't actually attached to the rest of your body?

It's true!

My right shoulder sucks, but I don't go to PT for it cuz they'd make me exercise. And I don't believe in exercise. I just want chocolate and massage. Besides, I don't even have time to pee at work, let alone get my shoulder fixed.

LOL Lise. I have a zoo eh? I have 2 cats, a dog and a bird. I used to have 2 birds but one recently died. I have no idea why, he was just in the bottom of his cage one morning :(

Nanci - Bummi is a Senegal parrot as well. She's more sweet than from hell, but there are days when she gets that Senegal screech going that I feel like I'm in hell. :) She's my buddy. I've had her 9 years now, hand fed from a baby. Though not as young as Roy! He's adorable. Love the name.

The bird that recently died spoke. He knew my other cat's name and would call him "Hey Jules". He could also mimic the microwave beep, my sneeze, and had various other colorful words he'd been taught over time :) Bummi isn't so talented. She mimic's my laugh.

So I'm ready to commute: tights, wool socks and a long sleeve top. Is it september or november? sheesh.

Sounds like it. Kineseo comes in a variety of colors.

beta, how shocking to get up one morning and find a dead bird. Sorry. How do the rest of them get along with each other?

I went for a run this morning, about 4 miles. Not too cold, once I got going. Not a great run. I felt tight, and like my pulse was just going up too high. (not wearing HRM, just perceived exertion). Those are discouraging. But, I got it done. I know I need to stretch more on a regular basis. That will help.

I remember running the 1/2 marathon last Sept 25 in shorts and a t-shirt...what the heck? I hope it warms up a bit again before taking the plunge.

I need a TE minder (kinda like the scientology minders, eh?) to come to work with me today and keep me from blowing my top during our monthly staff meeting.

I'll do my best to meditate on Flosshilde the Wonder Waterford and keep my mouth shut. Pretty campy wheels. Lugs. Campy brifters. Frog pedals. Lavender bar tape. Fast tires.

Yup, feeling better already.

We just found the builder (of the house we're buying) has offered us a $2K allowance instead of sod. That'll work! Apparently they never do that, so this is lucky and good!

I also found out this morning that I am getting the official offer call tomorrow morning. I sure hope they threw a bonus in there!

Mr. Fish is on his way to Ms State Vet school for Roux's biopsy and likely start of chemo. He has these wierd nodules/lesion-like things on his nose. Not pretty. So - think good Roux thoughts today. His appointment is starting right now.

On a better note - it's gorgeous here! I have all of the window's open! Clear day and light breeze. Temps is 74! It's killing me, because I can't go out and ride. I have Fishfry here with me and I'm trying to work. Not having much success at that. Luckily it's supposed to be like this all week, so I'm going to try to slip in a ride tomorrow afternoon.

MP - sounds like you're having fun in Hawaii (except for the hand thing, of course). I hope you heal quickly!

Knotted - good luck with the meeting! Stay strong and calm ;)

Lise - Sounds like Oct will be busy for you!

Beta - pretty bird and kitty!

Lise, a lot of birds start out cool- they love their mom that handfeeds them, but then they have a different sort of bond with the human they choose for their mate- usually their owner, but sometimes not! Roy was so adorable when he was a baby, my exBF- the French guy who's in the pics with Dill- used to carry him around in his pants pocket, and Roy loved it! But then he bonded with his real owner, Kelly, and is very protective of her/aggressive to everyone else. Luckily, he sees my grandson as a great feeding opportunity, not an enemy.

I'm not sure exactly how old Choco is. Three-four months? He was started out on frozen/thawed pinks without needing to try any other foods or tricks to get him to eat. Lucky, I guess.

But I got Maizey as a wild-caught adult- she's probably three or four years old. She ate F/T right away, too.

Ok that was cold....

I was fine going into work, but it was a relatively short turn around time to come back home. So I got that nice I'm kinda sweaty chill as I started out back home. Brrrrrrr. I'm with you Lise, I hope this stuff is temporary.

But, Sloane is awesome. You know that feeling when you get in synch with your bike? Had that on my way in today. She's nimble, light and fast. I may need to swap the handlebars out though. They're kinda narrow. Got stopping/starting down pat. Had a couple reminders of "thou shalt not coast" as I got tired :) A fixed gear is certainly a bit more of a workout.

Knot - how'd that meeting go? Your bike sounds fabulous.

Nanci - Bummi is pretty social. She's scared of strangers at first and will be nippy. But as she gets to know a person, she's more than happy to hang out on their shoulder. My other bird, not so much. He was aggressive, even toward me after a while even though he was handfed.

Lise - Bummi hated the other bird actually. He'd tell her to "shut up" as she screeched at him if he got too close to her cage. They had to be caged separately or they'd fight. And yes, the weather is wack. I think after a while all you can say is that it is what it is here and dress accordingly.

Fish - way to rub it in that it's 74 :D Great news on the house bit. Hopefully Roux does well at the vet.

I had to make Fudge Stripe Cookie Salad for the Century Volunteer Party last Saturday. So I had some leftover Fudge Striped Cookies.

New perfect food combination: Fudge striped cookies and Shiraz.

Fudge Stripe Cookie Salad

Large Cool Whip
1 small pack instant vanilla pudding
1 cup buttermilk
2 cans mandarin oranges
2 rows fudge stripe cookies, broken

People in Florida want to know why it is called salad, if it doesn't have greens.

Up North, if it has Jello, or Jello Pudding, with stuff mixed in, it is a "salad."

If it has meat and any other ingredient, it is a "hot dish."

*whistle* Biker Stud Knot!

What you can do to take care of the tire without screwing (har har) with Les Schwab, et all, (Assuming this is a tubeless tire. I have never dealt with a tubed car tire but weird stuff happens) bike to a GI Joes, Schucks or Auto Zone, and grab a patch kit. Should be a thingum that looks like a T with a needle-nose with a hole in the middle at the end of the T, and there'll probably be a rat-tail rasp with it... and then 4-5 4" long brown 'patches'. Kit is roughly $8, I think, but $8 to fix 4+ flats and the knowledge that you can do so is totally worth it.

The directions are there, but I'll post something like 'em...
Jack car up, use tire iron to remove lugs, pop tire off. Deflate tire. Locate screw. Remove screw. Use rattail rasp to even out the hole, use T shaped thingum with patch threaded through to push patch through hole (all the way) and then pull back out partway. Snip just about 1/2" above tread. Put tire back on, making lugs about finger-tight. Hit tire with heel of hand to make sure it's settled evenly, then tighten down evenly with iron. Inflate the tire, lower car, remove jack, feel like total car stud. :D

For anything less, I generally just use Tire Slime... but I run my car with Slime always in. For some weird reason, the little thin racing tires got slow leaks until I put it in, now no problem.

Yeah, FishDr I read in my Natural History a few years ago that the problem was that Italian honeybees did not groom themselves properly, they just let the mites stay on their bodies. We just have to breed more fastidious bees, neat freaks; was what I understood. (no pun intended here!)

Multiquote - cool! Every time I hear a word starting with "multi" I immediately think of Mulitpass (from the movie: The Fifth Element). It's just how my brain works.
Me too! And I hear it in her accent: Moooltipaass. I also hear that anytime I see a movie at a Multiplex. Seriously. :o

Lise - I got down to 0.2128. FishJr did pretty good with 0.5268! Mr. Fish was somewhere around 0.18. FishFry - not quite there yet. He likes the scrolly bar better than the mouse buttons.
I'm impressed with Mr. Fish's score. You can tell him I said so. It's sort of a Zen thing (apologies to actual Zen practitioners). You have to let your mind unfocus, and nail those sheep as soon as they bolt. If you concentrate too much, you'll shoot them for just eating grass. :p

PS: Can't believe I got the mooltiquote thing to work. AND: Mimi! Cool avatar! Now I have to go find your post about her and reread it!

I began reading up on this subject some years ago. I'm not an evolutionary biologist, but find the subject fascinating. Appologies to anyone here who is, as this is may be dated and incomplete info (if so please enlighten me), but it will make you believe in the value of older women.

At first glance, menopause would seem to be counter to evolutionary theory (the more offspring the better chance of leaving your genes to future generations, right?). Most mammals do not undergo menopause. Humans and (one other mammal** whose identity will be revealed below and which is not at all closely related to humans) were the only mammals known until recently to do so. I discovered three different theories on the origin of menopause:

(1) humans simply live too long. If other mammals lived as long as we do (based on heartbeats per lifetime or some other criterion) they might have menopause too.

(2) by nurturing grandchildren rather then children after a certain point in life, a woman may do more to ensure that her genes survive. It becomes a numbers argument: the survival of 2 grandchildren is the same as the survival of one child. But it has to play out over many generations with many other variables going on at the same time.

(3) groups, tribes, villages are more likely to survive periods of hardship (drought, flood, etc) if the group includes older women who have lived through similar hardship before. Without menopause, women wouldn't live as long. Remember Old Flo in Jane Goodall's first and 2nd chimp books? Pregnancy, childbirth, and lactation take a huge toll on a woman's body, particularly as she gets older. In most aboriginal (pre-literary) cultures, women were the storehouses of knowledge on local flora and nutrition. This theory was published around 1990 by a researcher who spent time with aboriginal cultures (in the Carribbean?) studying local flora and fauna. If he asked about the edibility of a certain plant that wasn't a normal part of the people's diet, he would be taken to see an old blind toothless crone who would remember what the people ate during the last drought 50 or 60 years ago. During the next drought, it was the knowledge possessed by this old woman which would ensure the group's survival. So evolutionary survival is based on social groups, but the result is the spread of genes that produce menopause. And older women were essential (until recent times) to survival. Doesn't that make you all feel good?

** The other mammal which has been known for decades to undergo menopause is the pilot whale. It's known because they were harvested commercially. Probably the orca too, but it wasn't commercially whaled.

Yeah, FishDr I read in my Natural History a few years ago that the problem was that Italian honeybees did not groom themselves properly, they just let the mites stay on their bodies. We just have to breed more fastidious bees, neat freaks; was what I understood. (no pun intended here!)

On the other end of the spectrum - bees can also be too festidious. Who knew?

FishFry.. you'll love this... said he wants to be an octopus. Yes, an octopus. And he was quite adamante (sp?) about it. We tried suggesting all sorts of other things he likes. Nope - an octopus. Now how am I going to find time to make an octopus costume. It's not like they're going to sell it at Target!

hard to describe but I saw a wonderful octopus costume once, picture this.

6 fake arms were sewn out of long shirt sleeves stuffed with whatever kind of stuffing. Each one had a glove on the end like hands (not entirely accurate but cute). I forget how they did the "suckers" on the arm.

Each arm is attached to the side of an actual shirt.

then each arm has a string that attaches to the real kid arm so ....when said kid raises or moves his hands...all 8 arms (2 real ones, 6 stuffed ones) moved.

Like a whole-body puppet! :D I bet my sis or neice could sew this with ease, I sure couldn't but it was fantastic.

When I said glowing things about the stability of my trunk bag, it wasn't attached to a seatpost rack but to an old Blackburn touring rack attached to my dropouts and brake bolt. Not that a seatpost rack might not be wonderful too, I just have no personal experience with one. Just thought I should clarify that.

Re: menopause.
I started this a couple of months ago. The hot flashes were a sure sign. That plus no periods (yay!), and I'm 50. :)

Hot flashes were happening many times a day. Then I read Andy Pruitt's book on cycling. There's a section on the "aging cyclist" where he talks about supplements designed to manage estrogen. I started taking the Beta 3 fish oil and Carnitine.

The hot flashes stopped.

I saw the most adorable cartoon yesterday! My niece and nephew have colds, so when I stopped by my sister's to pick something up, they were slumped, snuffling, on the couch. It was my niece's turn to pick the show they would watch, because she was due for her asthma breathing treatment. She picked ... WONDER PETS!

It's for "yiddo kids", as Maya says (say it out loud, and imagine you're 3, with a cold). A hampster, duckling, and tiny turtle get news that a baby animal is in danger! They get out of their containers in the playroom, put on their Wonder Pets capes, sing a song about cooperation, get in their boat-plane, and fly off to the rescue! This time it was a baby pigeon (animated), who was "stuck" on the nose of the Statue of Liberty. They rescued him, and returned him to his Papa pigeon, anxiously waiting in the nest on top of the Statue.

Adorable, and, of course, it made me think of Nanci! I reminded Maya that we had looked at pictures of Dillbird on Nanci's website. She snuffled in agreement.

Is it near the dropout? Might be a chainhanger. You can hang the chain on it when the wheel is off. Truthfully, I don't know why you would want to and I don't use mine. Is there someone here who can sing the praises of chainhangers?

edit:
Since no one has chosen to sing the praises of chainhangers, I'll add that the one place it could be useful is if you carry your bike flat in a car without its rear wheel. Then the chainhanger would keep the chain under tension so it doesn't sag and get the car greasy. Otherwise using it would increase mess since you have to handle the chain to get it on and off the chainhanger.

The entire text was: "L! I'm screwed with work!!! So sorry!!! R." I never heard from him again. Imagine my surprise when he emailed me today, to tell me he'd been hit by a drunk driver, and spent the summer recovering. Says he feels terrible for not "reaching out" to me. I did reply, expressing my surprise and sympathy, hope your healing goes well, take care, etc. I wanted to say, "and your excuse for never calling me the day of the date you cancelled was....?" I used to love vodka and grapefruit juice. I had totally forgotten about that. What a funny little memory snippet!

When I got home from work tonight, I checked TD before I looked at my email. Sick.

Go Roux!

Congrats on a close escape, Lise.

I've spent the last eight nights in a hotel by a Boeing airfield, which has its entertaining moments. Lots of small planes, but twice HUGE aircraft have gone right by the window. Tomorrow night the new roof will be mostly on the house and we get to move back into the basement for the next few months, while the crew comes inside to tear down walls, make new ones, do plumbing, wiring, heating. Eeeewwwww. (After they're done, I expect we'll be in debtor's prison and you can email me there). My mom is struggling along in the rehab place but at least doesn't seem to be in critical shape, this week, anyway. In the last 8 days I have bought an orange Shebeest jersey (looked so cool but arms too long, so going back), a new sports bra like Brandi Chastain's (I still don't look like her, though. How come?), and that damn Steep and Cheap jersey because it was so slick-looking. And some shoes. Huh. Wonder if there's any correlation between buying and stress right now? Hmm. Will have to think deeply about this.

Thanks ladies.

Snap - thanks for the drink suggestion.

Lise - I've seen that too. I'm really not sure what they're thinking, especially with the cabs/drunks/drunk cabs.

Tonight we had our kickball league, so I had a few beers and a magner's cider once we migrated to the bar (we lost).

The reasoning? Well, I'll try not to be TMI here. I have what they call "fistulizing" crohn's. My colon thinks it's a fun idea to grow tunnels to various parts of my body. I liken it to termites. These tunnels originate near the end of my colon :D I have disease activity in my rectum right now, basically. This stuff is a major PITA to treat, literally and figuratively. It's quite stubborn. The GI seems to think that sitting on a bike seat doesn't do me much good when this gets active. It really doesn't bother me on the bike, but he wants me to give my butt a rest. The threat is if I can't get this to calm down with drugs/rest, then we talk surgery. The only real way they do it is a temporary ileostomy (aka bag) so nothing passes through there and it can heal. Takes on average 6 months from what I gather.

So that's what it is. My contention is not cycling will make me stressed and/or depressed on some level. It really is my outlet to get through the day to day nonsense of life. I feel so much better after a ride. So hopefully this is temporary. I can't imagine 6 weeks off right now. But that's only because it's forced :)

I'll try not to get too pouty :D I am trying to figure out how I'm going to keep up my endurance for the Miami man aquabike in 6 weeks....He did say it was ok to swim at least!

beta, I am so sorry. This disease rots. Sucks. Stinks. Is stupid. If staying off the bike for 6 weeks keeps you out of the OR, though, it will be worth it. ((((beta)))) L.

Geez Beta - that totally sucks! We'll help try to keep you happy for the six weeks. A little vodka and grapefruit juice might help, too. I'm going to have to try that. Snap - you're always there with a good drink suggestion ;)

Salsa - good to hear you mom is fighting her way through. The planes sounds interesting. They'll make living in the basement seem all that much better!

Roux got another good report this AM and will definitely be coming home tomorrow! Yippee!

How on Earth am I ever going to get all of my work done and clean out my office in 2 weeks? Perhaps not posting on TE while I'm at work??? Nah - what's the fun in that? :p

\rant on

I had a doc appt today with the gastroenterologist. Long story short, after spending some time up my butt he declared that I am not allowed to ride my bike for 6 weeks. A fight I've had in the past with him and won, I did not win today.

Nooooooo! :( Beta, you and I have been neck and neck in mileage over at BJ! It has been a morning ritual of mine to check where you are at, then where we are at and how much farther we have to go to catch Corsair. *Sniff* I guess I'll have to catch her for both of us now.

This morning shortly after arriving at work I get a call from the division manager saying he needs to talk to me. I'm still in my bike clothes, but he says we need to talk now. So I go to his office (bike clothes, no shoes) and find out that 7 people are getting layed off today, including a guy who is working on one of my projects. I must say this is an improvement. Last time they layed off someone working on my project I had NO advance notice and was in FRANCE on business and the person was a good FRIEND. And I only got the news after-the-fact accidentally. I almost blew a gasket that time. This time I got 2 hours notice. Is this an improvement in company policy? Actually, losing this programmer isn't a big deal since he doesn't know modeling or chemistry and wasn't making fast progress. I wanted to rehire my previous programmer just for the summer to do this project (because she was good) but the company wouldn't let me. Ever since the current CEO took over this company, $$ has meant more than science.

My vent for the day. The steam clouds are subsiding. Back to other subjects, like sick pets :( , banding eiders :), and Beta's intestines .

[COLOR="DarkOrchid"][B]Eden, I'd love to see photos of your kitten. I am always fascinated by what it is that makes a person choose one cat instead of 20 others.. a special spark, what? what made you choose this one?

photo up in the pet thread!

We decided on a kitten since we have a resident cat and adding a kitten to the household is usually easier than adding an adult cat. Koji is really, really bonded to me, so I wanted to avoid having him think he was being replaced, but he is also used to having cat company so I didn't want him to be lonely either.
Surprising enough there aren't a huge number of kittens available for adopting right now - at least not at the shelters that I visited. We went to the Seattle Animal Control shelter and all of theirs were fostered out. I did try to contact several of the foster homes, but those kittens (from PetFinder) were already adopted. I had my eye on a beautiful little Siamese mix boy, but he was so pretty and his foster mom made him sound so nice that there were many people interested in him and I was not first in line. At the Humane Society there were only a few as well, 5 or 6 really little ones and 5 around 2 months. Shio caught my eye at first because she is really beautiful - her fur is grey and so shiny so she looks almost silver, but of course there is personality to take into account as well. He sheet said she got along with other cats OK and I got to take her out of her cage and spend some time with her. She wasn't timid at all (which I though was a necessary quality if she was going to be companion to a 3 y/o who is basically still a kitten in a full grown cat's body) and very curious even when there was a whole lot of noise going on out in the lobby. After spending time with her it really would have been hard to leave her at the shelter  .
It's taken a few days for her personality to really emerge (she was only a day or so post spay when I picked her up so she was still a bit quiet), but she really does seem to be a good match for Koji. She's tough enough and big enough to hold her own with him, but she doesn't get snippy with him either. He gave her quite the bath yesterday without a murmur from her (in fact I think she liked it). My elderly cat would freak out when Koji tried to lick him.

Mae, my mutt sped out the patio door at something and threw herself at the fence. I went out to see what's up. She was backing an oppossum into a corner and the tiny opposum (they can get big so this one may have been young) had its jaws open and was hissing at her.

I grabbed Mae and brought her inside and the 'possum ran out under the gate.

'Possum saved.

'possums are pretty freaky looking when they hiss. We had one on our patio once. It was raining, so a wet hissing 'possum is not a good look. Ya know?

I had one of those frustrating days at work where my boss and other people drove me nuts. Only 2 more weeks. Only 2 more weeks. I just keep telling myself that!
