Guess what my mother got for her birthday from me this year?
Not only does this new girl (with the ponderous name Tarantella) love her new home, but she is getting along famously with the previously lonely other kitty.

the second photo is of their first meeting. No growls or hissing!

Awwwww - very cute kitties, mimi!

My DD just adopted another kitten. Her original name was Lucille but she was flirting with everyone on the subway, and everyone was giving her so much attention that she has been renamed Lola, because.....well......"whatever Lola wants, Lola gets!"

TE ride to RedHook!!!!!! :p :D :p

YES! Beer will make up for cold weather. Though do we have to ride back? I'm thinking that the ride there would be lovely but after beer and food and warmth, a genie should do the transporting back.

I'm with you Teigyr...made the mistake a few times in riding to and stopping and drinking at Redhook in Woodinville, then dragging my butt in riding like a slug back to Gasworks, muttering and wondering to myself why we didn't plan to finish the ride and stop at the Redhook in Fremont (now, Hale's Ales is the post-ride brewery stop of choice!)...

So, I recommend either starting at Redhook, so that we can end up there or start/finish at either Gasworks or in Fremont on the trail...then the "genie" issue is unnecessary - voila!

I'm ashamed (or is it proud?) to admit I have NO CLUE how to get to RedHook by car. Only by bike!

I like the idea of start-end at the same place during the colder weather.

Not til I get my Surly fixed, ok? I broke my right/rear shifter trying to pretend I was a wrench. I'm just about ready to give up on bar-ends and go back to good ol' downtubes.

Pomegranate Champagne Punch

Roast Turkey Breast
Ham
Honeyed Sweet Potatoes
Green Beans with Caramelized Onions
Mushroom & Artichoke Dressing
Waldorf Salad with Walnut Oil Vinaigrette
Cranberry Gelatin Salad

Pumpkin Pie
Pecan Pie

I just need to figure out which recipe I want to use for the turkey breast.

Holy cow, that's major gourmet! How many people are you cooking for? They are very lucky!

Over here, us 7 folks will be having a small Christmas Day menu of:
broiled salmon
steamed asparagus with hollandaise sauce
baked sweet potatoes with brown sugar/butter
apple pie with vanilla ice cream

Nothing nicer than cooking and eating some good food with a few loved ones. :)

We are having steamed Penn Cove (local) clams, fresh Dungeness crab, a green salad, bread, and a couple of Marie Callendar pies. And some Dutch cookies from my grandma's recipe, and probably some caraway scones. This is the first time I've wanted to bake in quite a while.

I think there will be 10 of us - Mom, Dad, Brother & Sis-in-law, Sister, Niece, Niece's fiancé, Nephew, Nephew's girl friend, and me.

They'll all come to the house, I'm the "chef" of the family. I always accuse my mother of kidnapping me from my true father Jacques Pepin.:)

That sounds nice. I do not cook much, although I can. The second stint through graduate school, for inexplicable reasons, made me stop cooking. I think it was the "abandon all unnecessary activity" approach to graduate student life. And somehow I never restarted, even though I've been done with grad school cycle number two since, uh...1995.

Well, it's a balmy 2c here, which is just as well as I set fire to the last of my furniture yesterday in a vain attempt to stay warm. Still no heating engineer. He's due 'between 12 and 6' this afternoon. If you see him, tell him to get a move on. To add to my troubles I discovered when I lept joyfully into the shower this morning that I have no hot water either. Imagine my delight!

On top of all this I have managed to incubate a nice cold so have a sore throat and endlessly running nose to add to my list of gratitudes.

Grump, grump, grump.

Thanks goodness for porridge - my ancestors knew what they were doing when they designed the Scottish diet. I'll be having a Scotch pie for lunch.

Okay - I'll go away and stop moaning and complaining now. Thank you for your attention.

I was recently without heat for 52 hours.
I had four layers top and bottom.
I entertained myself at night with crosswords by kerosene lamp and battery powered NPR.
I slept between two dogs, all of us under the covers.
Them dogs is warm.
At one point I thought the heat had come back on.

Of course. Can we also then have a couple of insane guys behind us screaming horrible curses at the opposing side and maybe throwing things at the ref? I can't wait either.

Actually, I would love to have a good Scotch pie.

We just tried to take a bunch of photos of three Anna's hummingbirds, two males and a female, fighting over the hummingbird feeder that hangs in front of the living room window. I have no idea whether any will come out (35 mm, not digital) because they zip around so fast, but will post some if they do. In the meantime, this is from a previous winter. Mimi, a party like that would be a hoot. I DID get Raleighdon to tell me about that present last week, but believe me, it would never have worked for my spouse, who, when cooking is mentioned, hisses and cringes like Dracula confronted by a cross.

We had our big family Christmas dinner today. 11 people. Really delicious fresh Dungeness crab. I'm pooped but happy. Going to friends' tomorrow night for their Christmas Eve dinner. Thinking about doing a big ride on Christmas Day.
We are both on vacation till the 2nd for Chris, 3rd for me. What I would most like to do: 1. Stay here and do whatever. 2. Go to Paris again. 3. Go to Jamaica, which we may actually do next Christmas since my brother in law is at the US embassy there.

Nanci would have been able to respond to the post I made in bike journal about running over the huge gopher snake (who seemed undamaged). I was descending and couldn't avoid or hop him - came on him too quickly. I turned around and herded him off the road. consensus was since he was moving great and seemed ok when I scooched him off the road, that he'd prolly make it.

I really don't think any drift on TE or any of the discussion groups I'm on for that matter has ever gotten stupid crazy out of hand. Unless one thinks changing subjects is stupid crazy. But that's the point of drifting.

We waste so much energy on other threads batting people down for changing subjects. One of my first posts or it might have even been my first on TE I hijacked a post to talk about my namesake bike which had just been stolen and got the. "Go start another thread  we're talking about ______ here" treatment.

Maybe we were talking about bike locks on the original thread so it was soooo off topic.

It's never been exclusive, all are welcome here. C'mon over, sit down and drift.

I taught a creative writing class in Newport, Rhode Island to a large group of people with severe spinal and brain injuries.

The first exercise I gave them was to sit in a circle and I would start a line of poetry and each person would add another line and we would go around in the circle several times to see where we landed.

Along about the third person in the circle started laughing and blurted out something that wasn't even remotely close to what had just been passed to her. The next time we came to her she dissolved in laughter again and gave another way "off base" line. By the time we got to her a fifth time we were all laughing to the point of peeing our pants.

It seems that she had a brain injury that had destroyed her short term memory. She couldn't remember anything recently said for even a few seconds.

To her is was hysterically funny because we had liberated her from HAVING to be on target. We all changed our underwear and went on with more creative writing.

Hip Hip Horray for drifting!!!!!!

Karen, I have knit dozens of socks and mittens...they are my favorite thing to knit!
Unfortunately, when I took up biking/walking/snowshoeing etc I no longer had enough extra hours available in my week so I had to stop knitting for the past 2 years or so.
But I still love knitting....especially socks, on double pointed needles. I love making the toes and heels a different color than the rest of the sock..all kinds of wonderful color combinations. :)
I figure maybe someday if I break a leg or something I can get a bit of knitting done again. ;)

I started learning last winter, and I made one pair, and they were horrible. I still wear them, though!

There is only one yarn store within 150 mile radius of here, and they are quite pricey. So, I've been practicing on some cotton baby yarn. The result was a big big sock! At some point this morning, everything kind of went AHA, and I got right up and drove the 30 miles to the yarn store. Spent $50, and I've just finished turning the heel on the first sock. It looks GREAT. :)

All the patterns are so different. I have a book but I don't like the socks in it. Internet patterns for beginners are usually so poorly written, I could only go so far before they lost me with their assumptions. So, I've pieced some together and synthesized enough that now I've finally got it! YAY, me!

We went down to Northcliffe this weekend (it's about a 3 1/2hr drive south sw from Perth) for a fun 6hr mtb event. It's held at the Round-Tu-It caravan/camp park that has a mtb course  &. The roos are quite tame & I had a good look at thier claws  paws, etc. The joey's have really small heads compared to the rest of thier body. Cute but hilarious to see.

One particular joey was out on a stroll with it's mama & was suddenly frightened. It just jumped head first back into the pouch.. How long the mama puts up with that is beyond me..

Charles Taylor=vetting=Chicago=horse=ESP=horse=fractal Sunday morning

I woke up to the CSPAN channel on TV with Charles Taylor, talking about his book, "The Secular Age" that brought global politics, sociology, and religion/secularity together. I only was half-listening while reading new TE posts but somewhere he mentioned "vetting"....

A few of my brain cells remembered that I want to look up the origin of the word "vetting" but the main part of my brain was too lazy to do it right now.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying Chicago's post on TE about going on her first trail ride on the heels of bad news from her exboyfried.

My mind wanders to thinking what good therapists horses make in comforting us with their soft muzzles and funny laughs they make with big horse teeth and I ponder on wanting to write something upbeat and complimentary to Chicago about not letting things get her down and going out and finding fun and joy despite wanting to stay home and cry instead.

I also think that horses are very smart and can read people and have a knowing sense about them in an instant as if they been researching them all their life.

However, first I need to let the dogs out, make some coffee and then I'll come back and write the post.

But, I'm so comfortable under the blanket wrapped around me, sitting cross-legged on the bed with my laptop, that I decide to do a quick check on the derivation of the word "vetting."

"Vetting is a process of examination and evaluation, generally referring to performing a background check on someone before offering them employment. In addition, in intelligence gathering, assets are vetted to determine their usefulness. To vet was originally a horse-racing term, referring to the requirement that a horse be checked for health and soundness by a veterinarian before being allowed to race. Thus, it has taken the general meaning "to check."

Thank goodness there is a drifting thread. Where else could I dump this nonsense and my everlasting interest in the fact that everything in the universe is connected and we only have to look for the synchronistic thread that holds all of our non sequiturs together.

I just got up. It's 10am here and I finally had enough sleep to try to kick this cold. Now just the chest congestion to cough up. I hate having a cold. I rarely get one, probably because of a higher immune system from working at the hospital. When I get one, it's a doozy though. It really knocks me down. Our boy cat, Ito'san, has been right next to me every night, cuddling, purring, kneading my chest... good kitty. :) I may have the energy to finally post Salsa's saddle to her. :o No, I didn't forget. It is in a box ready to go, I just was needing to get home to the couch right after work each day to try to rest. It will go out today. I promise, dear. :D Thanks for waiting.

Speaking of Salsa, you guys don't know what you are getting yourselves into when she posts the wall of yarn. Really, you may want to reconsider this. :D

Okay, off to make b'fast, comb my hair just so I can put a helmet on it , warm up the motorcycle (Kit has our car at work) and take a ride over to post a saddle to Seattle. I'd take one of my bikes but I think I would drop a lung and maybe part of my pancreas along the way. There is quite an art to blowing ones nose while wearing a fullface helmet. It's a good thing I have a modular one, where the whole face slides up... that way I can just blow a snot rocket. Ya know, like a real biker. (I learned how to blow them here, on TE. The amazing diversity one finds here...) (:p

I can't STAND the taste of beer. I tried for years to find a brand of beer that I could tolerate without success. It's just so BITTER...even the "light" brands....even when ice cold. What on earth is it about beer that people like????

As to other alcoholic beverages, I feel about the same. Ethanol just tastes downright nasty. Unless you cover it with tomato juice....or lemon juice. I will tell you that I've been put under the table more than once throwing back bloody marys and Margaritas to quench my thirst and love for tomato juice or lime juice.

Okay, so the buzz was nice but the ethanol needs to be fully disguised.

You're not alone. I can't stand alcohol either. uncovered, covered, mixed, with chocolate, with coffee. It's poison to me. haven't touched it in 25 years, and before that barely touched it.
I can remember all the beer commercials and being SO Disappointed when i finally got to taste it because the stuff tasted like, well, swill, instead of refreshing, etc..

I think some of us taste a bitterness from the hops in beer that other people can't... I hate beer. There are other alcoholic beverages that I like (good sake is terrific- cheap sake is nasty...if its served hot its not good sake...), but I can't tolerate the taste of beer. I also do not like arugula - I get the same icky bitter/copper aftertaste from it as I do from beer. For the most part I find any kind of *cheap* alcohol will taste nasty - about as appealing as drinking rubbing alcohol...but for some things spending a bit will find you a nice taste indeed -rum and sake at least are like this for me.

Well, I don't usually participate on this thread but I thought I'd relate a dream I had. I'm not sure where it came from. As a preface, I am perfectly happy with the Selle An-atomica saddle I have.

In the dream it started out with me riding and trying out someone else's bike that had a Brooks saddle. (Now the history with me is that I've resisted trying a Brooks when I had saddle problems. And we all know, every time someone has a saddle problem on this forum, the Brooks folks come out in full force)

So the bike I'm riding come to find out in the dream, is Lisa's Luna. I distinctly recall the butternut color as I was riding it. And for some reason I could also see the honey saddle at the same time I was on it. I was going slow and Lisa was running along side of me yelling and cheering. Except the tires on her bike were big knobby mt bike type tires. Now, I just recall a thread where she linked to Peter White's page where there were oodles and gobs of pictures of studded tires that she wanted for the Riv not the Luna, but were very apparent in the dream. Anyway, in the dream I was sold on the Brooks saddle immediately because I kept yelling, "I can't feel a saddle, it's like there isn't one there", which by the way, is something Mimi always says, also a Brooks advocate. Except the Brooks on the Luna had springs. Lisa's doesn't in real life. Then I tried maybe her Riv except it was a red Riv, with no springs, and was just as sold.

I remembered a honey Brooks in my local LBS. So in the dream I went to that LBS and they didn't have the honey one in the case, and they said no more existed. Something about the dye they used went extinct. (Chuckle). (I also recall someone saying that they weren't making B68's in honey this year? for real) Anyway they said let's go to the cellar and check. So we were looking around in the cellar, it was dark, but then we found the Brooks but the saddles were actually hanging as skins in glass cases with very dim lights shining on them. In the dream, the way the Brooks saddles worked is that you bought the skin, and then yourself laced the saddle around the saddle frame to the taughtness you wanted. So I found a honey skin, the only one, and as I reached for it knocked over a very tall case on the other side of it. Come to find out when I looked at what got knocked over I found that it was a whole rack of vintage wine, the very expensive, rare, 100 yr old kind - all crashed and broken in pieces in the cellar of the local LBS. Last I remember, I was cleaning up the mess but happy knowing I had gotten the last honey Brooks in existence.

Yeah, no interest in seeing the special.

It was quite the time around the Bay Area. A growing sense of hope fueled by activism. Jones took advantage of that and drew good folks yearning for new ways of being.

I forget if Jonestown was right before or right after Harvey and George were murdered but it was all around the same time.

In short order we lost two public figures who could have gone on to make a big difference and of course a lot of people in Jonestown.

It's pure fiction yet a lot of fun but if you want a sense of a historic time and place in San Francisco read Armistead Maupin Tales of the City Series

www.armisteadmaupin.com

The books were originally a series in the S.F. Chronicle. Like a soap opera in the paper. I remember looking forward to each edition. We here could not get enough of the story.

As books they suffer from that; article sized chunk, next chapter article sized chunk, Sunday Edition a longer bit etc. But he captures a feeling of the era like nobody else and his sense of dialogue is spot on.

You'll be informed, uplifted, you'll laugh, you'll cry ... read it

I do want to see the new movie; Milk. From the look of the the trailer (warning to your sensitive eyes, brief shot of two men kissing) Sean Penn captures the look and voice of the man and the movie captures the upbeat feel and excitement of the time.

Trek, I think Jones and his henchmen were responsible for the deaths of Harvey Milk and the other guy!

No, as far as I'm aware Jones had no involvement in the murder of Harvey Milk and the other guy :o who was S.F. Mayor George Moscone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUB-RCNBDnk

Both were killed by S.F. Supervisor Dan White, a former SF cop and fireman. In brief Dan had a problem with working with progressive people like Harvey, and with having someone out and gay on the board and ... so he resigned saying at first the pay was too low.

Then he quickly thought better of it as in "whoops, I just quit, turned in my letter of resignation, OMG I'm not a supervisor because I quit, whatdoIdo, whatdoIdo , whatdoIdo? Go back to the family Baked Potato store at Fisherman's Wharf?"

But the city has procedures. If a Supervisor leaves the Mayor gets to appoint a replacement. Moscone had someone in mind and Dan was not getting his job back.

Being thus informed Dan White snuck into City Hall (through a back entrance with no security) when he knew both men would be there. First he went to Harvey's office and shot him, stopped to reload and then shot the mayor. :( or maybe it was vice versa?

He got off with a light sentence. Maybe you've heard the phrase Twinkie Insanity? Defense argued he'd been eating too much junk food and for premeditated murder as in; bringing the weapon and ammo in the unsecured entrance, waiting for one unarmed person, reloading with intent to kill the 2nd .... I think this former cop got 5 years of which he served maybe a couple of them.

When the sentence was announced the city exploded, instantly people assembled to march chanting "he got away with murder" it was a tense time here.

It was sad for all the families involved really. After he was released from prison Dan White committed suicide.

This controversial and famous scultptur by Robert Arneson (it's the sculpture on the top) shows Mayor Moscone.

Imprinted somewhere on the column it reads "he shot Harvey too"

Many moons ago I was in Washington DC attending a conference and I happened on an exhibit of Arneson's work at one of the museums (forget which one - probably the modern art one). IIRC the Moscone scupture was there - along with many other examples of Arneson's wonderful work. I've been a fan of his work ever since.

what about DONKEYS? Who here has really never heard a donkey bray?(I'm painting Donkeys tonight)

I absolutely ADORE donkeys. Here's an essay I wrote about a donkey that I know.

When Donkeys Fly

I know a donkey named Nellie who once demonstrated the intention of movement so artfully that it would have made you weep with joy. Nellie lived on the farm of a retired veterinarian who owned many championship thoroughbreds and kept Nellie as a "lawn ornament" who was required to do nothing for her keep but be a donkey. She had never been ridden or trained or even asked to walk across a paved road and therefore spent a lifetime flatly refusing to walk on pavement or gravel. With hundreds of acres of pasture, it was rarely an issue.

It's a haughty group of horse people that live in this area. Too much money, too much fox hunting, too much too much. Too haughty to even lower their eyes to mock the substandard confirmation lines of an aging donkey and an aging eccentric woman who came to the stables to visit a donkey.

You'd think a donkey so seemingly starved for personal attention would fawn and beg and bray and heehaw for the carrots, apples, and peppermints I brought. Not Nellie, proud Nellie so busy with living her donkeyness.

I have spent hours in the pasture reading, writing, napping, feeding Nellie all manner of delicacies from the farmers' market, brushing her, petting her, flipping her lovely ears like radar antennas. When I would laugh, she would bray. What gusto there is in a donkey bray! The whole body takes part and infectiously requires some kind of response from the universe.

Nellie moved very slowly and not before a great deal of deliberation went into the decision of whether to move, where to move, and why to move. This was fine with me. I'd hold a carrot in one hand while I read and eventually Nellie would find her way to it.

At the time, I was reading about Chi. All very interesting but I wondered where does chi reside when one isn't moving and in what form. When a dozen thoroughbreds thundered down upon us with flying hooves and tossing manes to steal the fruit and vegetable booty, it was easy to witness the life force coursing through their bodies. They are bred without a rheostat. They are either on or off and bred to run so swiftly that it takes the breath away to witness it and fires our carnal hedonistic desires to saddle up and ride that sense of abandonment so carefully choreographed as an almost out of control flight from gravity.

Yet it was a donkey never ridden that was chosen to bear a messiah into Jerusalem and it was an old testament donkey, not a man, not a thoroughbred, who saw an angel blocking the road and refused to move even when beaten, the same donkey who spoke to Balaam of his folly.

So lie down in green pastures with me and contemplate the chosen nature of a homely aging donkey and try to catch a glimpse of subtle chi as one slender burro leg raised itself off the ground and slowly came down again before another foot started to move and then the next foot and the next and then a pause of movement that was no longer an empty category or the mere absence of movement but a gathering of intention, a wisp of desire that existed with its own sense of purpose and humor.

As a myopic human who can't see angels in the middle of the road, I was not shown this feat of feet with just one step or two but dozens and dozen of graceful steps until I could match my breath to the slow cadence and realize that my own breath existed with its own consciousness, sense of purpose, compassion, and even humor. It made me laugh and dance with a donkey, and the donkey kept time and brayed.

I missed the interview (or was it discussed earlier in this thread)? It was only years after Jonestown that the meaning of the phrase morphed into something more negative.

this is a donkey bray. And I can't even listen to it.

a mule is a cross between a donkey Jack and a female horse.
Little known is the hinny, a cross between a horse stallion and a female donkey.
They aren't as popular, because they get most of their size from their mothers
so the mule is considered the more valuable animal. Either way, they get their smarts from the donkey, who is much cleverer than a horse.

Great socks Tuck! and lovely sweater mom (duck). I always take my knitting with me wherever I go (and have never had a problem with them on airplanes either, just remember to leave your tiny scissors at home). At the moment I'm working on a baby sweater as a break from all the socks and mittens and hats I've been making lately. But socks are good. Very quick to make so you don't run out of patience quite as easily. Took me many practice runs before I got good enough to make a matching pair though.

But I feel competent about it, as long as I don't have to go back and fix anything.

CA, I used Regia Design Line, which is why it was so expensive. It came with a pamphlet featuring the (Dutch? Swiss? oh wait, maybe German) designer. I wish the yarn was bulkier, but I didn't have much choice. The socks are a little looser than my last pair.

Duck, what would happen if I used 2.5 mm needles instead of 3 mm? I realize the knit would be tighter, but would I have to adjust the pattern for that tiny little difference?

Karen

What would happen is that your sock would be a little less loosely knit and thus very slightly snugger and very slightly smaller overall. If that's what you want then that's good. You don't have to adjust your pattern for a small change in needle size.

Tuckervill
11-17-2008, 09:32 AM

Good morning all! We finally have some sunshine, and my honey is getting better each day, what a great day!

Hope everyone else is having a great day too.

Good news on your honey's recovery. :p

My day started out great too-
I awoke to DH leaning over the bed and saying "Let's go for a nice brisk walk!"
Now... he NEVER wants to go for a walk- always prefers to bike. So this was mighty unusual!
It was only 28F degrees though, so we bundled up pretty well and went for a GORGEOUS 4 1/2 mile sunny cold walk to start the day with. It was delightful and so invigorating, and we dressed just right (i love when that happens).

I woke up in my recliner bed with both arms hurting. Crud. It feels like one step forward, two steps back. Maybe I've been overdoing it. I dunno.

So this is where everyone is!
Good news is I had a new PR on my 1/2 Marathon this weekend (posted in Running discussion):)
Bad news..back at work. I would rather run a 1/2 marathon or a full marathon every day than work!
Oh, but more good news: 4 day work week this week, 3 day work week next week, then another short week and I am off to Vegas.
Yes, I can DO THIS!
Oh, yeah...back to work....big sigh!:(

yes a lot of us are at work. But that's better than unemployment.
I don't think i'm going to be doing any bike commuting this week. Rain, fog and darkness in the morning. NAH. Meanwhile the intrepid Raleighdon just called me, halfway through his legends, superstitions and ruins bike ride in Arizona.
4 hours into a 200k bike ride. He's having a good time riding in the wild desert in the sun

he just called, he's got 10 miles to go, he's no longer in the wild desert. I think he's going to make it.
and he says it's not dark yet?! It's almost dark here and it's an hour earlier.

Kgirl he finished in about 10 hours. He managed not to get too dehydrated, but he fought horrible headwinds (Ya think?) and at the end of the ride he left his brevet card and 10 dollars on a bench. of course someone took them. So he can't get "credit" for the ride with the Randonneurs.
no i can't explain it.
he spent over an hour hunting for the card. Then he had to drive another hour and a half to get back to where he is staying. It made him rethink his notion
of climbing mt lemmon tomorrow.

and hey, i see sunshine in Seattle!

You're supposed to have the card as your "offical" proof.
Biciclista, does he still have the reciepts(assumimng they used reciepts for controls) and will the organizer accept them?

i don't think I'm getting anywhere on the PT front, either.

In other news, I put a lawyer on retainer yesterday. Let the games begin!
