Lise - tonight FishJr said she wants to be a "person that helps get babies out of the woman's tummy". I kid you not, that's what she said. I thought you'd like that! She also wants to be an astronaut. So - she'll deliver babies in space!:D :D :D
What brought that on? How cool! And who knows what we'll be doing on the space station when she is old enough to be a midwife or doc! :D

ON the subject of book stores-Down the street from where I work there's a well respected non fiction bookshop that i love... They're hiring & the same salary as i'm on now. I am a bit leery of working at a small firm due to the new Industrial Relations law here in Australia but would love to work with books.

Ian supports me in applying for the position but am I nuts to work in retail?? Great hours(830-5pm..can't complain) & might help me in the near future as i'm seriously thinking about submitting an application to enter the Masters in Information Sciences (under library studies) program at one of the main uni's here....

Hi all, I'm back from my trip to Osoyoos where it was about 105 degrees every day, and, uncharacteristically, rarely cooled down below 90 at night. Despite the weather, a week on the beautiful lake beach was great - had good times with good friends, drank lots of wine, and margaritas, and shmirnoff ice and...

Nanci - the area where I was camping is almost a desert - summer temps are usually around 100 degrees but it's very dry. In Kelowna, about 2 hours further north, it's usually a few degrees cooler but our summer average temps are around 80-90 degrees for about 6 weeks with little, if any rain, unless there's a thunderstorm.

Anyway - I had to get up early to ride my bike because it was so hot, and ta da - I managed to do the entire 8 km Anarchist Mountain climb WITHOUT STOPPING once! I honestly didn't think I'd be able to do the whole thing without a break but I kept plugging away and made it to the top. The guys - ok, we're talking "old" guys in their 50's - have a top time of 35 minutes and I did the ride in 40 minutes for my first time! I was so stoked. Last year, I wouldn't even consider doing the ride - I could hardly ride the 5 km into town. What a change. :) Erik was great, he did the ride with me and stayed behind me the whole time so I felt very supported but not pressured. It gave me the strength to keep going. I am feeling very empowered now and can't wait to keep working at it so I can actually ride with, and stay with, the guys next year. :D :D :D

The other ride I did was a 50km rolling hill round trip to the next town. I actually did it last year on my old beat-up mountain bike. I'd never done any ride over 5 km and I thought I'd die slogging up what I thought were never-ending hills. I had to stop 2-3 times each way and it took us forever to get back to the campsite. This year Erik and I did the trip in well under two hours and managed to maintain a 32 km/h average on the trip back. Again, a huge change in my ability from this time last year.

So now I'm off to unpack and do laundry... Can't wait to sleep in my own bed tonight, in my air-conditioned bedroom...

I have no idea, but in the car the other day she asked me how the baby gets out of the woman's tummy. I almost wrecked. I told her I needed to pay attention to driving and we'd talk about it some other time. How on earth do you explain how a baby is born to a 4 year old? Especially a very perceptive one. Yikes!

I tried out my new SS smartwool socks today - they're even good in the summer! My feet only felt a little tingly (from the wool) when I stopped and they got sweaty. I like them!

So much bad stuff in the world. One of the women shot yesterday in Seattle is a member of my church triathlon team. I was already very upset about the shooting, then to find out someone in my "social world" is one of the victims has me just sick. I can't picture her (very big church, and I've been training with the Team Survivor team) but I am freaked.

Ogopogo actually lives in Okanagan Lake, here in Kelowna. Personally, I think Ogie's just a couple of waves crossing each other but hey, if he brings in the tourists... :) Who are your friends? Maybe I know them....

fish--one of the important things about explaining birth to kids seems to be to stress that these things happen to grownups, not to kids, so they don't get worried that this will suddenly happen to them. I don't have kids, but I've talked to a lot of people, including kids, about how babies come out. We could PM if you want my thoughts! I'm sure you'll find a way that's just right for Miss Fishjr. :)

The TimTamTorpedo worked! Whoo-hoo! And you do have to cram the cookie right in your mouth after one swallow of hot coffee. It goes from cold and hard to warm and mush very quickly. But PLEASE tell me that each one does NOT have 390 calories! The label says 390k for "energy". No way that means calories. Oh please, oh please...:p

kilo...so we divide by 1,000, and each TimTam has 0.39 calories? SWEET!

uhmmmm--somehow I doubt my math just the tiniest bit. What is the relation between kilocalories and calories? (you'd think I'd know this, with two degrees in health sciences. Snicker away. I invite you. I deserve it. But this knowledge seems to have fallen into a deep crevase in my memory.)

Nanci, are you working, making that sweet overtime money?

DirtDiva

Nanci, what you're talking about is a kilojoule... (Calories aren't that logical - they're not metric.)

Lise, probably the back of the TimTam packet is talking in kilojoules too (food labels certainly are in kJ on things manufactured in NZ). There are about 10 of them in a "calorie" (which I think is actually a kilocalorie, but is never called that in the nutrition world..?), so each bicky probably has 30-or 40-something calories.

Wait! I've lied:

1 Calorie [nutritional] = 4.1868 kilojoules
1 kilojoule = 0.238845897 Calories [nutritional]

So:

390 kilojoules = 93.149899685 Calories [nutritional] (Thank you www.onlineconversion.com.)

But surely Arnotts can't be trying to tell you that the serving size is one lonely TimTam? More power to anyone who can eat those things one at a time. :p

Thanks, DD. I liked it better when each bickie had 30 calories than when it had 93.149 899 685 calories. We'll round down and say 93. :p Although, that seems about right.

They did a study once where they gave men food items and asked them to estimate the calories. They had no idea. Women, however, could usually get it almost precisely by guessing!

There are only chocolate biscuits (plural)

I just spent the last hour, cleaning Bleu the Bike from tip to tail. Poor thing was quite filthy, she lives under the vent where the dryer blows. When at rest she normally wears a coat, to protect her delicate parts from lint and smutz, but I forgot to dress her last time. I'm a lousy mom.

Now she's shiny, no crud in her lovely chain, cassette looks almost new. I'll let her rest a bit, then return her tires and lube her chain. I have new brake pads too, I should put them on while I have her semi-dismantled.

I want a Tim Tam!!

I just did a 2 hour trail run/hike with my riding partner. She actually claimed to be tired, which is unheard of! Maybe she was just being nice (and she obviously was being nice to even go do this with me in the first place!). I will say the vigorous hiking/running works different muscles than cycling, so things that don't normally feel tired after a ride definitely feel tired after this.

It was cold, wet and foggy. If it is like this next weekend it will be perfect for the Tam double/Marin century.

Lise
07-29-2006, 12:17 PM
That sounds great, MP. I actually like cold, wet, and foggy for anything approximating running.

The air was densely humid when Jamie and I went out for a run at 6 AM, but in the '80s already. Felt like breathing through a piece of wet felt. We were dripping sweat within a 1/2 mile.

I don't know how folks in So. Cal are holding up. It's "only" 91 here--feels like an oven.

TD reunion! (Or does there need to be a union first, before we can have a re-union?) My house for TimTams!

Cold, wet, and rainy. Oddly enough that sounds really inviting right now. It's so humid here that it just occasionally spits a drop of rain at you. That felt good this morning when I was out.

Our project today is to get the garage cleaned out. It never functions as a garage, but as a woodworking workshop and toy storage and bike storage. So far today, we've cleaned out the attic and donated a bunch of yardsale-y stuff to the local church. It feels good to get rid of the playpen, highchair, etc. Now, we can take stuff from the house and garage and put it up in the attic. Poor Mr. Fish is melting. Even with the clouds it's 94F.

Ohhhhh - remember my whining about my hot office? It turns out my thermometer was wrong and it was more like 85-90 in there. And now they've "fixed it". It was 63F in my office yesterday. That's a bit chilly, but beats 90F!

Anybody remember the movie, Jesus Christ Superstar? It came out the summer I turned 13 (1973). I saw it 12 times in the theatre. Ted Neely (Jesus) was touring in Tommy that year, and did an appearance at the theatre. I have his autograph somewhere.

Today I was looking for a CD, and pulled out the soundtrack. I know every word to every song. When we have that TD reunion, I can perform the entire rock opera, solo, if requested. I own the DVD, of course. This story still moves me so much.

About 10 years ago, I went to see it on stage. Ted Neely and Carl Anderson were touring with the company. Ted Neely couldn't perform that night. Carl Anderson was magnificent. He's since died of cancer. :( Ted Neely's understudy actually sang beautifully, with a better voice than Ted's, objectively. But I really regret not getting to see Ted and Carl sing together one more time.

It's funny that you mentioned it today because I was singing a couple of songs from the album on the beach yesterday. My BIL asked why and I said I don't know, they just popped into my head.. One of my faves is "So, you are the Christ, you're the great Jesus Christ. Show me that you're divine. Change my water into wine..." - and also "What's the buzz?" and of course, "I don't know how to love him". Hmmm, it's making me wanna go find my CD...

I suck at bike maintenance. Bleu is all shiny clean, with brand new Kool Stop brake pads. I can't get the wheels on correctly so they spin. Once I re-fasten the brakes, (v-brakes) the wheels don't turn at all.

I may end up at the LBS...:o

I have never had this problem before - could it be the Kool Stops?

KnottedYet
07-29-2006, 08:43 PM
check the centering you did with the quick releases at the axles. My v-brakes go totally ape-sh*t if I turn the nut of the QR differently than the lever. I end up loosening the whole thing, centering the wheel relative to the v-brakes, then tightening BOTH sides of the QR exactly the same until the lever is ready to be pushed.

Then I never touch the nut again except to hold it steady when I spin the lever side to put the wheel on or off.

Edit: I do this with the brakes' release closed so the pads are in functional position.

Hi! Just checking in to wish everyone a pleasant day.

It's supposed to hit 97F here today. For some weird reason our pool water is still cool. Very strange.

Have a glorious afternoon!

Don't you hate it when you can't find the tool you need???

I am trying to clean up my "rain bike" so I can put it on the trainer downstairs and have another exercise option. But the chain was gross so I ultrasonic-ed it, and now I don't want to put the beautious clean chain on the bike with the super dirty cassette. But I can't find the little round cassette remover thing-y. (I know there's a word for it.....SK?)

DH used it last getting his bike prepped for Death Ride. For ONCE the misplaced tool is not my fault. But darn it I wanted to finish this project up!!

Just got back from a foray into the depths of suburbia.... an outlet mall where NOTHING was cheaper than you'd find at a regular store!

I bought a new cast-iron frying pan. (I ruined a beautiful 23 year old pan my mom gave me. I'll do better this time.)

And.... we went to a Levi "outlet" and found old-fashioned shrink-to-fit button fly 501's! Do you remember wearing those in the early 80's? We were in an 80's mood already because the radio station we listened to in the car was playing all 80's music. So against all reason, I bought a pair.

Dude! I'm shrinkin' them and they are totally awesome! They actually fit! And since they really are shrink-to-fit, as I remember they fit better each time.

And the button fly is so sexy.

Doin' the happy dance because I can still wear 501's after all. (they just have to be the RIGHT 501's!):D

KN, cool about the 501s!

I'm at work, just about to start a 12 hour shift. Got in a 25 mile ride this morning before a meeting, then brunch, the 3.5 hr nap, then dinner with friends. And yet...driving home from dinner to get ready for work, I had this bout of sadness about the lack of partner. Y'all have watched my forays out into the wild world of dating this year...I know it's not over and I'm not dead yet... And yesterday evening I was feeling glad to be single and not dating, because I had time to train! Whoooo...

I remember when I was doing the hardest training for the marathon, I'd have intensely down moments, too. The good news is that I have two ladies here in labor, so I get to stop fretting about *myself*!

Sleep tight, TD. (Except for DirtDiva and CrazyCanuk, of course--get up! :p )

I called the attending physician in from home to deliver one of "my" babies with some minor surgical assistance. He came in, introduced himself to the couple, assessed the lady, agreed with my plan, and left to change into scrubs. He was back in no time. The nurse said, "Wow! That was fast!" I said, "Dr. F. is a triathlete. He knows how to get through transition." This guy's done at least 2 Ironmans (would that be Ironmen?). Changing clothes quickly would be his forte! :p

Morning all (or evening - wherever you are). I was supposed to go running this morning, but last night our AC decided to stop working. At least we have lots of ceiling fans. I couldn't bear the thought of running and then coming back into a house that was as hot and humid as it was outside. Yick! We keep our house fairly warm, but the humidity was a killer. At least now I'm in my frigid office.

Lise - What ever happened with Mr. P? There's someone out there for you. They might be right under your nose and you don't even realize it. But like you said - think of all the time you have for training ;) Smile :)

Hey, fish, that sucks about the ac. I don't know how I lived without it all those years.

Mr. P.--we had some very tentative plans for dinner last night, but he never called to finalize, so....in the wind? I went out to dinner with good friends instead, which was nice. As I think about it, I realize that they were all couples, which may have been part of the sadness after.

Going to bed now, and I will shut the cats out! They will have their own little ac area, and I'll have mine. If I don't close the door, Isaac will bug me non-stop to let him out to eat grass. argh! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....L.

What happened to your AC, Fish? Ours caused trouble a few times a year by freezing up- which then means no AC, but then after a good long thaw, it's fine again until it has to run non-stop for a long time. Finally, this year, I was sick of it, so we had a tune-up/checkup done, and it just needed more refrigerant (plus some minor changes in the house like leaving ceiling fans on all the time and uncovering all vents and I put in a programmable thermostat, which I don't know if that has any effect or not but we're not fighting over the settings anymore, especially since BF has a real job now and is paying the electric bill so I am not always trying to conserve- now he is!!!). Hasn't frozen up since. I hope yours is something simple like that.

We're not quite sure what happened to the AC. We had the refrigerant recharged last year. It's been running hard lately - 'cause of the heat. We have a really cool (bad pun - sorry - you know I can't help it) thermostat that came with the house. It learns what temps you want at what particular time and gradually changes the temp. Anyhoo - Mr. Fish was checking what type of batteries it took (batteries were running low) and removed the unit while it was running. We are afraid that caused some sort of voltage spike and fried something on the board. We had a wire that needed to be resoldered before, so who knows.

Just talked to Mr. Fish - AC guy is still not there. It's wierd - it'll blow out air that's around 80F. The house is around 85F or so now. It's dehumidifying the air, but we're afraid to run it like that, just in case it's doing more damage. It has to be hot in that house!

Here's another quirky southern thing that doesn't happen up north. You have a well, and a pump. One afternoon, your water just quits. Then, at night, it may mysteriously start up again! Hmmm- ants are in the electrical contacts that control the pump! They go to bed at night, and your water starts working again, unless there are some bodies stuck in the contacts. No one knows why they are attracted to the contacts. You have to learn how to shut off the electricity to the pump (which at my house isn't the main breaker in the house youch!!!!!!!!!) and how to dismantle it and get to the contacts, then figure out what exactly constitutes "contacts," then clean them with a nail file, then go psycho spraying killer insecticide all over above your ground water supply so it doesn't happen again after the 5000th time...

Try to find one of those on clearance like at Sierra Trading Post or Back Country or even Steep and Cheap. North Face makes an excellent windproof jacket, too.

Fish- glad to hear the AC is working!

MP- the ants thing is apparently well-known in Florida. As soon as I mentioned what happened, _everyone_ knew what it was and what to do. There are bad ants down here. Up north we just had the huge black carpenter ants, regular brown ants, and rarely, biting red ants. Down here there are burning biting fireants that can actually kill people! Then the plain old brown ants bite and sting. Sugar ants- micro ants that get in the house. Oh, fireants also get in the house. Some weird black and red medium-sized ants that seem to be solitary and don't hurt anything. Giant red velvet ants- (like red velvet cake???) that are solitary, don't hurt anything, and are really cool. Oh, they are actually wasps, but look like ants and I don't think they have wings...If I could make one creature vanish- it owuld be ants.

Wow. Ant-o-rama. That's one thing about those really warm climes. Sooo much fauna. Ants give me the creeps. I lived in Jamaica for 2 months a few years ago, and ants are everywhere. One crumb left on a countertop attracts the whole colony, it seems. Well sealed Tupperware is essential. Something I'm sure most Jamaicans don't have much of! Only entitled Americans who can't stand ants in their breakfast cereal, again.

It's 98 with a heat index of 108 up here. I got about 3 hr sleep in my relatively cool bedroom, came out, and the living and dining rooms were way too warm. The poor little hand me down window unit in the DR is struggling mightily. I realized that the curtain I hung between the DR and kitchen had some open space at the top, through which hot air was pouring. So I fixed that with a towel, and remembered to turn on the ceiling fans in the BR and DR. Feeling better now. Wanted to cool off with a bath, but the bathroom's in the "hot wing" of the apartment! These old brick buildings get like ovens in this heat.

I have a feeling my friend and I are going to *walk* more than we run tonight at 8. At least the sun will be setting. We have a plan for Jamba Juice afterwards! :D

she's a mastiff/rottie/great dane/ridgeback (aka BIG DOG) mix. i keep trimming her nails as far as i can but they are black and don't want to trim them to far. had a bad experience once with that. so now she has broken two nails half way down so the soft part of the inside is exposed. the first one is healed just fine, but now the second one is still half way hanging on. its going to break off any second i'm sure.

any clue to why this keeps happening? are they dry? anything i can do about them? she has really thick nails to begin with and they are longer, but i keep them as short as i feel comfortable cutting. thought about getting one of those drills, but not sure. she's good about trimming nails and stuff like that. she just lays down and looks at you like 'are you done yet?'

Giant red velvet ants- (like red velvet cake???) that are solitary, don't hurt anything, and are really cool.

I think I've seen these. There was a ginormous ant walking around the gas pump one day. It was HUGE - over 1cm. It was very red. It looked like it could do some damage. I figured that it came in on a farmer's truck.

I really dislike fire ants. We're lucky to only have a few in our yard and only in the flower beds. That's good, because the kids aren't walking through them. When we lived in Lafayette (Louisiana) after a rain storm we would have big mountains of fireant mounds all over the yard. Some would be over 1ft tall. Yick! And if they get you (for those of you that haven't had the pleasure), they crawl up your leg and then all gazillion of them bite at once. It's no fun.

So Nanci - were fireants in your well or something else?

You could take her to the vet and have them give her a good trim to get the nails back to where they should be. Then you will know how far to clip them in the future. I had a golden retriever once (miss her greatly) whose nails went straight out. They were black - looked like they had been painted. I was always battling to keep them trimmed.

Hang with me, we'll get to the funny part--

In 1995, Chicago had a horrific 5 day heat wave, in which 739 people died. Since then, we've got a lot of safety measures in place for "heat emergencies".

Yesterday a police officer knocked on my friend's door. He told her they were checking on the old lady on the first floor. She wasn't answering her phone, and didn't come to the door. My friend replied, "Of course not! She's dead!" What she meant was, "She died two years ago, and her nephew just won't rent out the apartment." She said the officer clearly thought she meant, "Oh, heck, she succumbed yesterday!"

I do find it comforting to know that they really are going door to door to check on old people.

I used a dremel tool nail trimmer on all my dogs- it's great. You can get them _so_ short. (Cut that broken one off before she rips it off and causes worse trouble!!) Ok, so get a jar of Qwik Stop powder for when you go too short, then get the dremel tool, and take them down till you can barely see the quick- you should be able to stop before you actually hit it, but if you do, no real damage done, and you can stop the bleeding with the Qwik Stop. You want to be trimming about once a week, but with the tool, it goes fast! Ideally, the nails won't even come _close_ to touching the floor. (I did my dogs twice a week.) Round off the edges. That size dog, you should be able to get the nails down to 1/4" easily. In gradual steps. The quick of the nail will recede the shorter you go.

Walk into the shop, tell the guy what's going on. Four minutes later, my wheel is spinning away. :) The good news is, I now understand how to adjust the cable, and how to adjust the spring tensioner screws. I need visual aids to learn!

I almost forgot - was it in this thread that Jesus Christ Superstar was being discussed? I'm going to go see it next week - City Lights is putting it on. It's getting good reviews, I'm very excited. I've only seen the movie version.

Yep, it was here. (Where else but TD?) I listened to the soundtrack this weekend, and had the songs playing in my head. Have a great time--it's definitely my favorite of the ALW "rock operas". The movie is burned in my memory. I saw it on stage with Carl Anderson as Judas. Ted Neely did not perform that night, at the last minute. His understudy was very good, but he was not...Ted Neely as Jesus in JCS. I kind of felt like Carl Anderson was sneaking around and seeing someone else behind Ted's back by singing with the understudy that way! :p

Congrats on getting Bleu back in working order. I'm a really visual learner, too. You'll never forget that lesson. Happy trails.

I went Cd shopping...I shouldn't have but i did...I bought

Nirvana-MTV Unplugged (hey mtv started 25yrs ago today), tina turner-all the best, billy joel-12 nights.

We're not going to the billy joel concert-(is it just me or am i getting older)-ticket prices are wayyyyyy too expensive...! It's $120AUD for a good ticket...
(it's not sold out yet though...so we may still think about it.)

I did it again this morning-set my alarm but forgot to turn it on. I was lying in bed worrying about the time & when i looked at my clock it was 6:20am...I was supposed to have woke up at 445am to go for a ride...(i start work at 730..)

Hey MP/snap...did you track down any Tim Tams....(I've started something-let the bikkie takeover commence)

I used a dremel tool nail trimmer on all my dogs- it's great. You can get them _so_ short. (Cut that broken one off before she rips it off and causes worse trouble!!) Ok, so get a jar of Qwik Stop powder for when you go too short, then get the dremel tool, and take them down till you can barely see the quick- you should be able to stop before you actually hit it, but if you do, no real damage done, and you can stop the bleeding with the Qwik Stop.

i have some quick stop powder. i ordered up a dremel, gotta love ebay. once i get it i'll be asking for advice on how to use it. she got off that nail before i could get to her, but seems to be doing just fine. wasn't licking at it at all last night.

Chick - I have no helpful information on the dog nail thing (and I think Nanci's already helped) but I have to weigh in on this - OMG what an AMAZING dog combo!!!! That sounds like my DREAM dog!! I had a rottie for 10 years (my soulmate) and always wanted a mastiff.

Have you got a picture???

she is my little dream dog. couldn't ask for her to have a better personality. though she does think shes a lap dog. here's a pic of her and her sister kiska (she's mexican. was found on a couch down on mexico half dying as a puppy and came to live a VERY good life.)

I have some Sugois and some Castellis, both of which have held up well for century rides.

The Castellis feel better on my legs and wick better, but have less padding. However, it is in all the right places.

The Sugois are a good all around short and have a thicker pad.

Right now, I'm thinking the castellis and I'll throw a pair of Sugois in my banana bag. Or maybe vice versa.

My wonderful LGs are now too big and gave me chafing last Wed. Who'd have thought a few lost pounds could make such a difference.

...south on the lake front path, that is! :p The temp is 98F as I write, but, well, it's my day off. What'r'ya gonna do? I left at 8AM with a bottle of Gatorade Endurance (into which I add some salt), a bottle of water, and a 32 oz Camelbak with ice and water. Stopped a few times to fiddle with my saddle, but once I got that on straight, I was off. Stopped once to pee, once to take off my socks (an experiment--hate it). Rode down as far as the path goes, and turned around. Along the way I ate some Cliff Blocks, and sport beans.

The view of Chicago from the south lake front is the most beautiful cityscape I've ever seen. I love my city. I'm sure NY'ers feel the same about taking the ferry over from NJ. My heart just swells to see it.

I wanted to get a swim in, too, so I rode with my bathing suit on over my bra, and the Sugoi shorts over that. It's so freaking hot here that there was no way I was carrying the wetsuit for the ride. Swam maybe 1/3 of a mile, and ended up climbing out of the water. The water felt great on my hot, tired muscles. But by the end, I just wanted to doze off, a little snooze...whoa! Now I know why the swim comes first in a tri! No sleeping in the water! Walked back to the bike, ate a Maya bar, rode up to North Ave, bought a mango-passion fruit smoothie, endured major brain freeze, poured said smoothie into Polar bottle :p , and rode on home.

Cold shower, traumeel to the forearms, icing the R one now. Ate left over Hunan Shrimp and Scallops (shared with Isaac the cat), and now...to bed, perchance to nap. For sure to nap!

35 miles on the bike--no big for the likes of MP, SK, and V, but a big deal for me. Went all out most of the way, in the aero bars a lot. I'm considering wearing the Shimano sandals for the tri; my feet were so hot in my bike shoes. Let us all pray that it's at least 10 degrees cooler on August 20! :D L.

I usually get TE stuff by Priority mail in two days, and I am about as far from them as I can get- but I HAD TO have this top for my brevet Saturday, or I would die, so I had to go with Fed Ex to be sure.

I would have ordered it yesterday, I was almost weak enough, but then couldn't remember the size (too bad TE doesn't have order history on their site- that is so useful!) so today I knew it couldn't wait till I got home or tomorrow, so I called and she looked up the size of the black one for me.

I've gotta get the Vitesse back on my bike- the Flow just isn't cutting it for me, but isn't horrible enough to take off, either, until I do the 200k. Still wanting to try the Zero X.

V, I can't believe a few pounds is enough to cause chafing, yet the smaller size doesn't fit. Are you keeping the LGs in "hopes" you grow back into them?? Geez, how heartbreaking. Yeah, thanks for showing me that, BTW. Now I have to have gray, too. I !!!!!LOVE!!!! that top.

Going out for a long ride in the heat isn't the smartest plan, but it was a case of carpe the diem off. I guess I could've gone to the Y and done a swim/run brick indoors. It's a beautiful day, just really, really hot. I can't believe I saw people out there running. Very little shade along the lake. Baaaad. I'll probably run a few miles tomorrow AM before work. There's this thing called the Aquathalon (or something like that) for older athletes who can't take the running anymore. Biking and swimming, I don't know in what combination or order. To tell you the truth, I, like SK, do not like to swim. I love to be in the water. I do not like to propel myself forward through the water using mainly my arms for nearly a mile. This winter I *will* work on upper body strength! I feel pretty strong, but swimming winds me so fast.

When I got home, the odometer read 34.97. You know I rode down the alley and back to make sure it clicked past 35! :p It's so wierd when I feel like crap on the bike. Happened to me last Sunday. It got better as the ride went on, and it *was* another really hot day, but man, I felt weak, slow, etc.

Peanut butter ice cream.......

Oh, right, the cassette. Sorry to discuss cycling, but now that I have...
I have a Bianchi Veloce with a triple chain ring. I bought a 13-29 cassette to replace the stock 12-25. The manager of the LBS is kind of a character. Or a lunatic, depending on how honest I'm feeling. I was there with my bike to pick up the cassette and he told me emphatically that I'd need a new rear derailleur. I was pretty sure this was not true, and since he was going on and on about how many years he's been a bike mechanic, I put 2 & 2 together and said, "I'll just take the cassette, nevermind my bike." He grabbed the bike and put it on the stand and proceeded to change the cassette. So much for my escape. Anyway, of course it shifted fine. That was enough for him, and I've learned that I don't care for this man, so that was enough for me, too.

My other deal is that I'm coming out of denial about having pains in my back, in between my shoulder blades. I thought they'd go away after riding more - like it's a beginner's thing. So I would benefit from another fitting exercise, and I figure my best bet (and cheapest one) is to back to the store in SF. I may need to raise the handlebars or something. Then maybe I'll have a nice ride around the city, which is my original stomping ground.

Wish I could join you guys!

As it's 94 degrees here at 10PM, I have decided: NO running tomorrow. NO riding tomorrow.

I saw the energy healer today. I told her I've been having trouble staying asleep, and having times when it feels like my heart's going to beat out of my chest. She assessed me and told me that the chi in my kidney meridian is very low. She recommended I don't do the tri on 8/20. ...pause... yeah, like that's going to happen. I told her I'm doing the tri, but that I'd be willing to ease up on the training. Heck, it won't improve my times if I'm totally burnt out when I get there.

She suggested some herbal remedies, and gave me some techniques for mobilizing energy in my body. I am verrrry Western in a lot of my approach to health, but I've got a window of openness to other perspectives. What the heck.

I don't even feel like I'm training all that much, but in combination with my goof-ball work hours, I can see the problem. Tomorrow, for example, working an 8 hour clinic, 5 hours off, then a 12 hour call shift. To me it makes sense to run in the 90 degree heat, then ride my bike to and from the clinic, but...maybe I'm a doofus! So, easing up, conserving energy, getting some sleep, being ready for the day when I go all out.

I have a question and a sort of proposal. Have any of you TD girls read Last Days of Summer?

If not, I would like to send around a copy, starting maybe with Maillotpois, who can then pass it to the next TD person, etc. The book is funny as hell and really delightful, about a friendship that develops between a 12 year old Jewish Brooklyn boy and a young, profane, diamond in the rough pro baseball player from Wisconsin. I have given out maybe 20 copies of this book. Every time, the recipient not only loves it but it gets passed through large networks of family members and friends. I get emails saying, "Oh my God, that book made me burst out laughing right in the auto repair waiting room, and all these people were lookin' at me laughing my head off!" I even emailed the author and told him how far these networks of readers were stretching, and got quite an email back about where the book came from. Don't want the book to come back to me--this is a "pay it forward" kind of book. Your only obligation will be to report to TD your favorite mixed metaphor or malapropism from the book. My face always hurts by the time I finish rereading the book because I just grin pretty much all the way though.

You guys game?

PS Crazycanuck, we can always replenish your Reese's supply when really necessary---just let us know.

Up here in northern CA it certainly has - we're back to our typical summer foggy mornings and cool evenings- hurray! Right now I can see about 100 feet off my deck to where the trees fade into grey fog...

(You can see photgraphic evidence on the Monterey thread in the CA forum)

I hope you guys in the east and the middle get a break soon from the heat and humidity. This global warming has really messed with our summer riding routines! :(

Mmm, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. I got a bag of the minis the day I gave birth to my daughter- they were so delicious!! I work with a guy who brings in a new bag of the singles every night and drives around with it hanging on his portable x-ray machine. I always beg one from him when I see him in the morning. Luckily I only see him Thursdays and Fridays. I was told from the blood bank that if a person has low iron, if they eat two peanut butter cups 45 minutes before getting tested, their hemoglobin will be high enough!! So I do that.

I love it when I have good days.

Snap, had your blues over the weekend. Did not enjoy them one bit. Glad they're gone for now.

I suppose I could have just done one message and included everything, but that would require oo much organization for a Wednesday morning!

PP Is snoring in bed. I can hear her from upstairs. Man that girl has sone tonsils. We went to SPorts Basement last night to get her some new shoes - she's suddenly outgrown all of them. So she got these SUPER cool Asics trail runners - bright orange and red. SO cool! She's in a 7 women's. Looks like maybe she's finally getting my (size 11) feet. She'd been small for her age foot-wise til now....

So what are we going to do with the Fish on her trip here?? Here are some of my ideas:

1. Drive up the coast, up Mt. Tam, go to the cheese factory for lunch;
2. Wineries (I have not been to a winery for years) - maybe we see about renting a wine van if we have enough folks who want to do it? I think we could do this fairly economically and then we wouldn't have to worry about designated drivers.
3. Chocolate factory, jelly belly factory.
4. Touring sights of SF - museums (the DeYoung is great), parks, Girrardelli square (hmm... more chocolate there).

So Fish - where are you staying, do you need a ride from the airport, what? Details!

I'm in on the book swap too. But I have to get it before Aug. 29 - that's when I go back to work.

I'm actually excited about going back to work. I'm teaching a 4/5 combo this year, which means lucky me, I'm responsible for two sets of curriculum and standards and benchmarks, two different report cards. The bookkeeping will be fun.

But my class is supposed to be full at the start of the year. Last year I got 16 new students throughout the year. New kids throw off a class for a bit - even if they're good kids. Kids who move a lot have a whole bunch of strikes against them, and it's so hard on them. Avoid moving in the middle of the school year if you can. And take the time to meet your kid's new teacher, even it's May when you move.

My class makeup is supposed to be made up of independent workers, no real problem students. Don't get me wrong, I feel for those kids. But my job is to teach 32 students, to help 32 kids become productive members of society, not to work through the emotional problems of 4 or 5 at the expense of the others' learning. And yeah, that's what it's been the last couple of years.

But the best part, because I have to integrate two curriculums, I have a little more freedom in what and how I teach. Thanks to testing and more accountability for teachers (I'd like some for parents please!) teachers don't have as much time in the schedule to be creative. I miss that.

We're told we have to spend X minutes per day on Lang. Arts, Math, with our At Risk kids only, with our limited Eng. kids only... It sucks up the whole day. Last year I actually figured out how much time I had per week for science, social studies, art, character development, assemblies, movies... - two, 45 minutes blocks for all that. That's it! And theoretically one of those should have gone to PE, since our kids weren't getting the state mandated amount of time.

Anyway...Do what you can, with what you have. :)

V- that sounds tough. What grade are you teaching?

MP - I like your plan!

Like I said - I get in at 11:30 or so on Saturday (9/2). It looks like there isn't much for me to see on Sunday at the conference. I don't have a complete schedule yet, but I do have a list of sessions. I do know that I have to talk on Monday (and run my session) in the afternoon.

MP - I'd be thrilled to have a friendly face pick me up at the airport :) I'm staying at the San Francisco Marriott. I can email you my flight schedule if you really do want to pick me up. That would be awfully generous of you :) I'm looking forward to our get together more than the conference! That's bad, isn't it? Who else is in the area that wants to get together??? This is going to be so cool!

I've had a 2/3 combo for the last two years and I really enjoyed having the independent workers, no behaviours issues etc. However, this fall I get a straight 3 and I am REALLY looking forward to only having to prep for one grade level for a achange and not have to do the split-class "dance" style of teaching. It'll be a real treat. I have seen my class list though and there are a couple of interesting characters in there.

They've been saying that the temps are going to drop 20-25 degrees once the rain comes through. Imagine my dismay when I came out of work today and it was still 102 degrees and sunny. I am so glad to see the rain.

We met her and her husband on our honeymoon cruise (meeting them was the only good thing about the cruise - so many stories to tell from that one). We get together when I head home to visit family. Each time we talk on the phone it's like we saw each other yesterday. It's awesome!

Lise - rain??? what's that??? I cannot remember the last time we had a good rain here. I love rain! We've had rain around us, but only a couple of drips have hit us. Our highs are predicted to be 97 and 98 for the next 2 days with lows in the low/mid 70's. Glorious!

That's really cool about fishdr coming to SF! I work there, too... I'm about a block from the Marriott. The Ferry Building is a great idea (was reading the other thread in the CA forum.)

The Red Dog has been shopping. I got a Camelback, 72 oz women's model, I think it's called the Dream. In red. REI is having a sale (again?) so I picked up a jacket that has the unzip-able sleeves. My favorite Shebeest SSS shorts are not on sale, however.

I've been obsessing about global warming. I mean, it's mid-week, I need an obsession. The entire U.S. is heat-baking. My govt. won't do anything about this for at least another 3 years, so I'm looking at getting a solar system for the house. They do free estimates, so I'm setting up appointments. I consider this therapy. I also looked into PHEV cars - plug-in hybrids, but they're still a very expensive concept. Solar power for my house will be cheaper than buying a Prius :) What a cool concept, though, it's fun to read about.

Download a group of payment files from the same payors, run 'em through some more programs, and load them to our hospital's main computer system. Computer geek life. My brother installed solar, it's a great thing to do.

But I own a condo, I'd need permission to install anything on the roof, even on the storage shed.

Since a girl can always ask I'm asking the HOA, we'll see how they respond. Stay tuned as MWBR.

People here have huuuuge TV antennae, satelite dish, helipcopter landing pads .... and here I go doing the whole being nice thing, asking permission first.

Meanwhile there's compact flourescents, getting estimates on dual pane glass (really need to do that) and of course, I bike to work at least one day a week.

I saw on a film about indigenous people that all we'd have to do is just inflate our car tires to the proper pressure would save more oil than we would ever get out of the Arctic refuge.

I try to eat local and or organic whenever I can, basicly non organic fertilizers and pesticides are petrulium based so it's kinda like you're eating oil.

I recycle of course, I'm involved in getting AT&T to recycle the envelopes of our correspondences (folks write us...a lot) even bill payments, even the stamps go to Charity (the Easter Seals, that's a long story).

My uncle's 5 bedroom house is run entirely by a solar panel the size of a queen mattress and one windmill. It has never been hooked up to the grid. He's been there for nearly 30 years, but every time a new meter reader gets that route he has to take the meter reader on a tour of the place because they are always freakin', thinking he's stealing from the grid.

When all his neighbors lose power, they come to his house for meals and showers and to get warm/cool.

Why don't the aid groups help folks use solar panels in Iraq? I keep seeing things about how aid groups are trying to get gas for the portable generators and folks only have power for an hour a day, etc. One little panel with a couple storage batteries (smaller set up than my uncle's) could easily provide 24hrs worth of electricity. Would the panels get broken too easily or something?

I agree with you on the AC to a point. When you live in a place with high heat and humidity - AC prevents mildew from taking over the contents of your house. Or if you live somewhere like AZ - I think the contents of the house would start melting ;) We keep ours set fairly high (warmer than anyone else that I know in town) and hold out as long as possible to turn it on and turn it off as soon as the temps come out of the 90's.

Nanci
08-03-2006, 07:55 AM
Fish is right- where I live, my house would mold into nothing quickly without AC to remove the humidity. You should see the outside of it- it turns green (like solid green) within a year of being pressure washed back to normal white.

The cats are livelier. They've been lying around looking like semi-melted cats. I came home and opened the windows and turned off the AC. I'll leave it on in my BR while I sleep, mainly for white noise.

Oh thank God this heat broke! I am a weeeeenie when it comes to heat.

I took my new running shoes back to the New Balance store--too small with the orthotics in them. The owner recognized me, remembered my name, and told his assistant which shoes to bring out immediately. I had met him *once*, a week ago, when I bought the first pair. Talk about inspiring loyalty! Plus which, he's got a 2 yr old Border Collie named "Sassy" who brings the ball back over and over again, if you'll keep throwing it!

Now how's this for completely unnecessary, yet totally cool: New Balance is the "official shoe" and clothes and all for the Chicago Marathon. So behind the counter they had a display of running shoes with the marathon logo stitched on the shoe, and the race course printed on the insole! So cool! :D

I came home a couple days ago, and the AC wasn't even on! Freaked me out! We drop 20 overnight, usually. Stuck in the low 90's for a while now. They say FLorida is missing out on the heat wave because the ocean wind keeps the weather from getting stuck on us. Apparently, more people die when it stays hot at night because they never get to recover.

Nanci - did you ever notice how those 30F temp drop fronts never seem to make it down to us???

I've seen 60 degree temperature fronts in Maine. +40 to -20F in 12 hours. I was camping at Mt. Katahdin in February 1980. What kind of fronts do you get up in Alaska, CWR?

Um.... NO! You live in ALASKA!!!!

ahhh weather....

lets see where i live its quite different then the rest of alaska. im smack between the pacific and the bering, so who knows, we get pummled from both sides. we are the second windiest city and the #1 cloudiest (sorry seattle you have nothing on us). oh what a suprise, i look out and its windy and cloudy.
we never get cold like interior alaska, but we never warm up either. our high for last month was 64 on two days, otherwise it was low to mid 50s. the rest of the month. i'm having a really hard time picturing 80-100+ anymore.
we get most of our storms from japan. whatever major storm that hit there, its gonna hit us. winter time is our really bad time for storms. anyone ever see Deadliest Catch on the discovery channel? those are our storms.
any time of the year, if it blows from the north COLD and snow out of the south warm (for here) and rain. the lows hit us and just like to stick around for a few days, leave and another one follows, no rest.
i could go more specific into this (bf is weather person) but i won't bore you. simply put: we don't have the best weather, but when we do, the whole town is out enjoying it!

We drop from mid to upper 90's to mid 70's overnight, too. However, it seems like it just tickles mid 70's and then starts right back up. Oddly enough when I was in St. John's it was hitting 100F at home and then dropping to mid-upper 60's at night. The pool was cool. Most unusual for July! Our AC (now that's it's behaving again) is running under 10 hours/day. When we only hit low 90's during the day it will only run 4-5 hours. I attribute some of that to the nifty thermostat. Soon it will cool down - right???

last year our lowest was -2, its a damp cold and windy too.

i can walk around in town when its 0 without a jacket, but here if its under freezing it seems colder than that!

Apparently, more people die when it stays hot at night because they never get to recover. That makes sense to me. The asphalt and the brick buildings just hold the heat, and you never cool off. It's like living in a kiln.

+40 to -20 in 12 hours sucks.

Hey Snap-did you know that davinci's inquest is based on Vancouver's coroner? (something like that)

Yeah, I read that somewhere. If I remember correctly, he's quite a character.

What I find funny is being able to detect a difference in Canadian vs US dialog. Can't quite put my finger on it, but there is a definite difference.

bikerz - Thanks! I'll take you up on that.

KnottedYet - that's really cool about your uncle! Regarding Iraq, that's a good question. I'm thinking that since their govt. is sort of our govt. right now, and our dweeb leader is oil-obsessed, then oil is the thing. It would be wonderfully ironic if they could use solar in building back their infrastructure.

MP - I've been debating about seeing that movie. I may go see it now, since I'm already upset about the subject, and I think more information might be good. We'll see. I don't know a single person who would go with me, cuz they feel the same way you do.

Everybody, thanks for the info on solar, A/C use wrt mold  etc.

I'm sorry. My mind is totally in the gutter. Everytime I see the post Hip Angles and Max Thrust I just want to start twittering. I know it's a totally serious post, and I shouldn't laugh, but I can't help it.

Maybe now that I've shared that with you all, I'll grow up. Probably not. :p

I hear being a grown up isn't all it's cracked up to be.

speaking of...... got this in email:

25 SIGNS YOU HAVE GROWN UP

1. Your houseplants are alive, and you can't smoke any of them.

2. Having sex in a twin bed is out of the question.

3. You keep more food than beer in the fridge.

4. 6:00 AM is when you get up, not when you go to bed.

5. You hear your favorite song in an elevator.

6. You watch the Weather Channel.

7. Your friends marry and divorce instead of "hook up" and "break up."

8. You go from 130 days of vacation time to 14.

9. Jeans and a sweater no longer qualify as "dressed up."

10. You're the one calling the police because those %&@# kids next door won't turn down the stereo.

11. Older relatives feel comfortable telling sex jokes around you.

12. You don't know what time Taco Bell closes anymore.

13. Your car insurance goes down and your car payments go up.

14. You feed your dog Science Diet instead of McDonald's leftovers.

15. Sleeping on the couch makes your back hurt.

16. You take naps.

17. Dinner and a movie is the whole date instead of the beginning of one.

18. Eating a basket of chicken wings at 3 AM would severely upset, rather than settle, your stomach.

19. You go to the drug store for ibuprofen and antacid, not condoms and pregnancy tests.

20. A $4.00 bottle of wine is no longer "pretty good sh!#."

21. You actually eat breakfast food at breakfast time.

22. "I just can't drink the way I used to" replaces "I'm never going to drink that much again."

23. 90% of the time you spend in front of a computer is for real work.

24. You drink at home to save money before going to a bar.

25. When you find out your friend is pregnant you congratulate them instead of asking "Oh sh!#, what the h*ll happened?"

Bonus:

26. You read this entire list looking desperately for one sign that doesn't apply to you and can't find one to save your sorry old azz.

Then you send it to a bunch of old friends 'cause you know they'll enjoy it too.

...and now you know why I am sending this to you!

My mind went there right away...BF was in a headline in the paper today for his armadillo rescue. No pic! That was the best part!! Today his (squad) car blew up. I'm not sure what that means...

I bought take-out chicken for my pre-200k breakfast Saturday.

I had an EXICITNG bottle of wine tonight. Hogue Gewurtztraminer, $6.00, Wine Entusiast rates it as 87. I LOVE it!!! Sweet, acidic, smells like green bananas and oranges, tastes like bananas and oranges. Yum!!! I have to get more! How can it only be $6??? I hope BF likes it.

My new Crocs got here. They are bubble gum pink, not fuschia.

My new red Sugoi top got here. It shows every fat bulge. I am keeping it as motivation. I am SO off the diet wagon. Actually, the exercise _and_ diet wagons. I'm wearing it Saturday.

My new set of three bargain phones from WOOT got here, too. (like Christmas in August around here! BF also got his new Smith sunglasses from Steep and Cheap!) I LOVE them!! The base station takes up way less room that the deposed one.

I am out on the patio with Dill reading 23 days in July, drinking a bottle of $5 Shiraz/Cabernet. It's ok. There's sort of a breeze. It's 85 im the house. I think the tropical storm Chris is going to miss us. I hope it brings rain.

I put the Vitesse back on Lava after taking off the Blackwell Flow. If anyone wants to try it out- I'll mail it out to you. Now I covet the Terry Zero X.

Nanci--his car blew up? Like, exploded, blew up? Yikes! +++++++++

(Isaac the cat just inserted those "+" marks. He just has to be part of typing experience!)

I can't even bring myself to open that "hip thrust" thread! My mind went there immediately. The twin bed's still OK with me, but not for actual sleeping....;)

I still go to bed at funky hours, but that's cuz I'm working for a living at a grown up job.

CWR, hope you get some sunshine up there.

I got two gift certs to the LBS for my birthday! I want to try out that Zero X saddle, too. I'm going to see if I can order it through them.

Feeling down today, and thought, "I know, the TD girls can cheer me up."
So here goes:
Last night I traded in my beautiful Cadillac Deville with every option you can possibly imagine for a optionless Honda Civic. Why? Because the Cad had the "check engine" light on so it wouldn't pass inspection. It was going to cost me a fortune to fix, so I figured I'd get a new car instead. But what a down grade! :( Maybe I've just been spoiled by the Cad because the Civic really is an ok car, plus I'll get good gas mileage. It was kinda funny because when I test drove the Civic, I had to come home and make sure my bike rack would work on it since it has a rear spoiler. :o
Anyway, I laid awake a long time last night mourning the loss of my precious Deville.
On a good note, the weather here has been much cooler, mid 70s. Hope it doesn't rain this weekend so I can go ride--I really need that.

Thats good. The kids start back a little earlier here Aug 16th. All three of mine will be at school this year - Yipee (sorry should I try to hide my glee) yipee (sorry cant do it).

One of the other mums I know who has her youngest starting school this year said oh how sad it all is and how will she cope with the loneliness. Hmm yep thought about that for a second and then blurted but I sure will be able to ride my bike heaps. I did get a strange look for that. I love my kids but hey have I mentioned I WILL BE ABLE TO RIDE MY BIKE MORE YIPEE.:D :D

I think it's very important for your kids that you ride your bike heaps.

1. It makes you a happy. A happy mum is a good thing.
2. What a positive example you're setting for them.
3. It makes you happy!

Yeah, I 'm repetitious, but it's very important.
