Well, looky here... you did it!!! thanks everybody. You put a big smile on my face. :) :D :D

Hey, Knot - no 'shrooms? gotta have 'shrooms in there. now go clean something woman... start with that dirty mind. Um, on second thought, leave that just the way it is. :D

Snap - cool video. LMAO! I had a Vader shirt as a kid. I thought Luke was a wuss. (<<I got away with that word.)

BMo3 - so glad to hear you got snow! Yea! thanks for the pics. Tell Mr. BMo3 that I would love to go to Cabo. We'll hang out at Cabo Wabo and meet Sammy. *Ahem* Can I bring a date? :o :D

Kit - I think you may have been hanging out with the wrong kinda wool if it was smelling "sheepy". :D

There should be a barter system or something for dog owners. You've got those who can knit a sweater with the stuff and others who put sweaters on their dogs. (I had a Husky who loved me so much, she gave me a new fur coat everyday.)

I'm gonna go take Pounce out for a spin today before BMo3's snow gets here. Her first big girl ride out in public. Then, *sigh* the family. Grrrrrrrrrrr. (I may need another ride after that.)

I will back here later to get my smile put back on my face the whole way. ;)

I spent the day re-routing my drip irrigation for the Tortoise Walk, and digging azaleas out of the jungle that had grown up around them, and so rewarded myself with a new Gerber daisy, daffodil and some succulent I forgot the name of. Then I took pics of Choco in all of them. I had to cut down my Mexican petunias- we're obviously not going to have winter down here.

Caffeine is my shepherd; I shall not doze.
It maketh me to wake in green pastures.
It leadeth me beyond the sleeping masses.
It restoreth my buzz.
It leadeth me in the paths of consciousness for its name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of addiction,
I will fear no Equal -
For thou art with me;
Thy cream and thy sugar they comfort me.
Thou preparest a carafe before me in the presence of The Starbucks.
Thou anointest my day with pep; my mug runneth over.
Surely richness and taste shall follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the House of Mocha forever.

Our lager who art in barrels, hallowed be thy drink.
Thy beer doth come, I will be drunk, at home as in the tavern.
Give us this day our foamy head, and forgive us our spillages
as we forgive those who spill against us.
And lead us not to incarceration, but deliver us from hangover.
For thine is the beer, the bitter, and the lager, forever and ever.
Barmen.

I got my hair cut today, and it looks quite cute, if I do say so myself. I'm growing it out from it's short-short-short style of last summer. This may take years.

Mom's carotid stent procedure is tomorrow. She doesn't seem the least bit worried. Maybe because all her children are worrying for her! My poor brother is in India - freaking out. I had my freak out monday, and am actually pretty calm about the whole thing. **'course I'll be checking my cell phone every 10 minutes tomorrow until Dad calls to tell me all is well** She won't let me come to the hospital with them.

In Pilates last night I told my teacher my powerhouse had burned down. I couldn't find my center with both hands and a map...not one of my better classes.:o Next week will be better.

Yesterday it was -15C here and snowing and blowing to boot. I gave up on going to the gym, since I don't shower there. I just pull some wool and fleece on over my sweaty gym clothes and hike home. It's been ok so far, but -15 + wind chill ...? Næh. Today, however, it wasn't quite so cold. Maybe -8 when I left work, and since I was at my usual campus today I had to hike home pretty much past the gym anyway. So today I did a 55 minute class, and when I came out to hike home ... it was RAINING   This is not a sign of Spring yet. This is just a sign of slush now and ice tomorrow when it turns cold again. Ææææsj! (That's yuck in Norwegian)

SNOW RIDING IS EXCELLENT!!!!!
Just mind your balance, don't try to stop, etc etc. ;) my 21st b-day present to myself was to take my bike and go riding in 3-6" deep snow all over Brown's Camp (on the way to the coast) Tons of fun. Bogged a little, but hey. That was in the 6" deep parts.
With your big wide tires you'll be fine. :D Like Snowshoes, I tell ya. :D

Careful if ya crash, but at least you'd get more of a slide action and less friction/gravel/etc etc

Hey Salsa,

The family is good! The kids love their learning center! Mr. Fish loves his job and I love mine! Wahoo!

We've been inundated with rain for the past 2 weeks. I'm getting a serious itch to ride - haven't gotten out for quite a while now. The guys at work are now doing a noon run. The knees aren't wanting to run, so I'm going to do a noon ride... if it ever dries up. :)

I really have to change my screen name one of these days.

I think just being home has made cranky mom feel better. She can take a shower today - even better! I was reading some of the post-op stuff sent home, wish I'd seen it before. Calmed me down immensely!

I'm off today to see "Menopause, the Musical" with friends.

Yeah.. it's finally raining in Ca. We need the water!!

But I'm bummed cuz I need to go riding...

COurse it's nice cuz I'm sitting at home nice and warm and maybe I'll just putz about or go back to bed.

Maybe I'll go pick up my repair stand later and then go visit Chris to see about painting my frame...

Menopause the musical? IS it hot.. Is it cold or is just a flash in the pan?? Sorry..

ARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!
I'm sitting here studying for a "new job" test, if I pass it I'm about 99% sure I'll be changing professions from social services to working at the university library...I really need a change in venue but haven't taken a test in a long time and it's freaking me out a bit.

I took this morning off of work and my test is at 1:00pm, I usually ace most tests but haven't taken one where so much was riding on success...I can't remember ANYTHING I've studied. :(

go through the stuff you have to study and find something that you really don't "get" and read it.

OTG, so tell us about this guy and where was the date??

*deep breath* OK. Well. Give me a moment because my head is still spinning. :D

The stats: He's 25 (I'm 27). We actually started chatting online because he is moving to my town this summer or so from about 45 minutes away. We talked on the phone for at least 3 hours every night last week before we met. He runs his own business. Never married, no kids.

We met for lunch at an Italian restaurant that has a gluten-free menu. He gave me a present when we met. Sometime during our phone calls, I mentioned I have a favorite scented lotion that Bath & Body Works was discontinuing. He actually got me a candle of that same scent!!! I was blown away.

Oh and he's really cute, too. I have seen pictures, but don't have them saved on my hard drive. Some other time.

During lunch, he was genuinely interested in what I can eat, and kept asking if he didn't mind if he ate gluten foods in front of me, so that was very sweet. We talked for several hours at the restaurant to the chagrin of our waiter. :D

Afterward, we went walking and just kept talking. At the end of the night, we held hands, hugged and I got a quick peck to say goodnight. Our date was nearly 10 hours of just talking. It was just an amazing connection. I feel like I could tell him absolutely anything. He's a great listener.

A caveat is he doesn't bike, but I'll fix that. :D He has said he would go mountain biking with me, after we both get mountain bikes. Which is *really* *really* *really* cool because my ex-fiance wouldn't do ANYthing active with me.

We're going to go hiking next weekend. I can't wait!

I went over to the library when I was done and talked to a couple of people and they were astounded at the depth of the test for an ENTRY LEVEL library job, they (both Masters level librarians) couldn't answer some of the questions. Oh well, if I didn't pass I'll try again in a month or so (the soonest I can re-take it).

Hope everyone else had a less mind-bending day.

Umm yes, running into a Moose would ruin your day. However if you just hit the moose a bit, it would mozy on and tell it's moose friends "oh, that bruise..just a car.." something like that.

Possums are evil. Pest in NZ but protected species in Australia...

Hey are there such things as Moose bars on cars & trucks? Most 4WD's & utes in Australia have Bull Bars. Bull bars protect your car from when the suicidal kangaroos decide to jump onto the road just as you're passing.

Now that the snow is deep, we're likely to wind up walking alongside moose on the classic Sunday hike route (up to a cabin in the woods for hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls). They use the wide, trampled trail to get from woodsy patch to woodsy patch for grazing, rather than struggle through belly-deep snow. They seem totally unfazed by hords of people hiking up the trail and kids on sleds racing down. Not quite 2 years ago I had a PhD student visiting from Brazil. I took her on a hike up there after work one day (trailhead is right behind the campus) and said we might see a moose, although the snow was gone by then. We got up to the cabin -- no moose. Back down past the parking lot -- still no moose. Then right in somebody's front yard on the way back to the main road, there was a moose grazing calmly.

Hitting a moose does serious damage to car and moose. Bad all around. And this thing about the moose using trampled routes when the snow gets deep creates big problems for the railway. Dave Barry had a hilarious column back in the Lillehammer olympics days about how those "crazy Norwegians" -- you know, the ones crazy enough to do ski jumps carrying a torch with the Olympic flame, and when the one guy falls and breaks his collar bone at dress rehearsal they've actually got another guy crazy enough to step in and sub. Anyway, those crazy Norwegians were using wolf urine to keep the moose away from the railroad tracks. He wondered how they went about collecting wolf urine ... until someone filled him in on the secret (psssst. don't tell anyone, but it's synthetic).

Duck on Wheels
01-30-2007, 02:49 PM
I think quite literally a ton of work. They don't exactly fold up and fit in your pocket. Our neighbor and his brothers stay close to the family's old homestead when they hunt, so they don't have far to haul. They shot one from the kitchen window once. This may all seem callous, but since Norwegians pretty much exterminated their wolves and bears a century or so ago, they have to hunt some quota worth of moose and deer or the poor things starve and sicken, even after eating the forests to nubbins. But you can't just grab a gun and go out and shoot. You have to pass tests for accuracy every year as well as written tests on good hunting practices. And you have to have a tracker dog along so you can quickly catch up with any animal you injure but don't kill on the spot. Not that "good ol' boys" don't ever drink-and-hunt, but they do risk losing their licenses for it.

chickwhorips
01-30-2007, 02:55 PM
they need to have stricter hunting regulations like that here. i think its a great idea!

DoW- in WI we had quotas like that, too, for the same reason (and with all the corn and alfalfa fields, the things would breed like rats....) Deer seem so much easier. Nothing like pulling one over your shoulders to carry to camp  if you've forgotten your drag bag. Fun, fun. I was the type to caaaaarrrefully check out all the innards, too (where else do you get an opportunity like that??!) oh and venison. mmmmm venison. God I MISS venison. *sigh*

and hunting out here is *nothing* like hunting in WI. I don't know *what* kind of deer they have out here but they're *not* the white tails I know (shorter tails, yes white, yes the same basic antler branching to the beams, but the build and coloration is different...) and there are just *nowhere near* as many out here. *huff* *sigh*
And here I move just when I was getting good... I knew how to still-hunt, how to lay scent trails, make mock scrapes, call, rattle, breathe, shoot... all that knowledge; wasted. *sigh*

It's also a staple in pet food..blecuchhh..

Running into a kangaroo is not a good thing for you nor your car. Not something you want to try at home. Now running into a roo whilst mtn biking would be rather exciting. I've heard stories but never had that experience.

Passing kangaroos & emus whilst biking is just fine with me. THey're so freakin quick..I wish i was like that!

Way to go Queen!! So happy for you. :D

Kit - I love deer bologna, steaks, roasts... but I'm not the kind who could ever kill one. I used to go hunting when I was a teen. I'd sit out there on a boulder or up a tree (my bro never figured out how I could get way up there :p) and just hang out. I'd watch the squirrels and chipmunks, take in the scenery, the smells and the textures. The deer would walk (run) on by and I'd just sit in total amazement of their beauty and grace. My dad knew I'd never be able to shoot (I really did try but I don't think I ever took off the safety on my 30-30) but he loved the fact that I would come out to be with them all. Now, I can gut/drag/butcher one... but then I can't eat it. I have this thing that if I've ever met it "whole", I just can't eat it. :o But my bros give me meat every year and of course, it's gone almost immediately. So I still get my fix. Thanks everyone! My honey and I are discussing it tonight (she's an academic librarian so her opinion will carry a lot of weight with me), it seems like a good thing but I am a tiny bit reluctant because some of the job is repetitive and I get bored easily...guess I need to buy and Ipod. :D

Queen, congratulations on the job offer. It is really nice to be sought after and even if you don't take it, it will have been a great experience. But, I have to say that I think it's kind of a good idea to take it. You might get bored after a while, but you'll learn new stuff, have something elso on your resume and if it gets to be too boring, you can sniff around again. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, you are very capable of making the right decision, I just wanted to give you a different perspective.

I need to get my hair cut but I am at a crossroads with my hairdresser. He used to be so good but lately, I don't know, he's just not cutting it (no pun intended.) Do I two-time him and try someone new, only to come slinking guiltily back if it doesn't work out? I hate changing hairdressers, but I need a good haircut before I get married. It doesn't help that it's so dry with this cold that my hair looks like crap anyway...

I forgot to tell you all that yesterday while driving to work in a snow storm all of the sudden 20 elk ran out in front of my car and across the road. After the initial OMG when I saw that I had to stop on the ice, luckily I was going slow, it was the most beautiful scene of elk just flowing like a river across the road and back into the forest. Those are the things we live for!

This morning was a little different. I drove down the freeway no elk but there was this beautiful cloud hanging over the downtown area of our little rural town and the sun was just starting to peak out so the cloud had this yellow/orange iridescent glow. With the backdrop of the snow covered mountain it was spectacular.

I called and left the soon-to-be boss a voice mail that I'd like to talk with her, I'm going to accept the position...YIKES!!!! :( :D

UPDATE: Every communication I had with this company after the initial interview has gone from bad to worse. Their lack of communication was maddening...I accepted the job, the boss said "great, you're hired!!", then her boss calls (two hours later than he said he'd call) offers no apology and says the job offer is actually contingent upon two more interviews with him and the CEO, the CEO interview will take place in SF the week AFTER I start.

During the interview I was told I'd be going to SF for a week of training...then it's "we'll fly you out early morning on the 13th so you can meet the CEO that afternoon, then you'll fly home the next day", followed by another email saying "oh by the way, it's too expensive to fly you from Champaign, we want you to drive to Chicago (O'Hare) for a 6am flight". Well, O'Hare is a 3.5 to 4 hour drive depending on traffic, so I'm supposed to leave home at 1am to get to the airport in time to go through security, fly to SF for an interview after being up all night, then fly home the next afternoon and drive 3.5 to 4 hours home??

I contacted them today and declined their offer...I feel like a weight is off my shoulders!

French Dip day in the cafeteria just ruins my diet for the day. Plus they had onion rings. Damn - I used 10 flex points today.

Got a massage tonight - purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
