Hey MP, I'm of Acadian descent also! My ancestors arrived in South Louisiana in 1767 and have been there ever since. Although I've been a resident of Georgia for the past 21 years, I consider it a "temporary inconvenience" which I intend to rectify the day DH retires (he's a native Atlantan). Don't get me wrong -- Georgia is a beautiful place, but my heart and my roots are farther south and west.
Have you ever been to Grande Pre in Nova Scotia? It was a very moving experience for me. Really made me appreciate my heritage even more.
KB
Wow. Really interesting! My mother's family came from France in the 1600's, settled in Canada and then got booted out. Some went to Louisiana, but most of my mother's family only went as far as northern Maine. I honestly don't have as much of the story as I'd like, as I'm just getting to know my mother (I'm adopted - this is my birth mom whom I only met in person last year).
I haven't been to Grande Pre - what is it? Nova Scotia sounds great. I really want to go there - now I have even more of a reason.

It's a small world, isn't it? Grand Pre is in the Annapolis Valley area of Nova Scotia, near Wolfville. Here is a link to the park website:

I generally enjoy hyperbolic statements and exaggeration for the sake of a good story, but I'm NOT kidding about this one:
I just spent 2 hours on the phone and talked to 10 different people at Verizon to get a messed up bill corrected.
I'm exhausted. Need a beer. (that's hyperbole;) )
coffee and nachos, then off to do all the things I should've been doing for the last 2 hrs. (paying more bills, wish me luck)

Sounds as though we are having similar days. After spending the entire day with adjusters and carpet reps (the insurance co required 3 faxed in, btw they reps were from the only 3 places the insurance co will allow us to go), we will be getting carpet in 2-3 weeks. :) Padding will be included after all 3 companies pointed out to the insurance company the flaw in their thinking.
Now, I can finally shower  , just in time for dinner. Thank goodness for pony tails! :p

I might end up switching, cuz Verizon has not been enjoyable. Certainly not terribly efficient.
They are the only land-line provider for my area, though, so I'm kinda stuck.
off to pay rent and get some groceries. Maybe I'll get that beer, too....;)

Am off to visit a travel agent after work to check out airfares etc to Van...just not via the USA if i can avoid it. You see, quite a few flights from Perth go via LA & i've heard nothing but horror stories about customs there..Perhaps a few SF ladies might see me if it's too expensive to fly via Singapore, KL or Osaka...
Am pondering the idea of the F1 race in Indy or Montreal. BM I would still love to meet you though..Lise would be close by too!!!

hey canuck,
that's no good on the accident, but luckily it sounded like minor injuries that will be healed by the time the IM comes.
I looked around at the headlines of your paper. So, what's the party pills story all about? With a title like this: 'Pensioners among West Coast party pill poppers' how could I resist? Is this a real ongoing issue?
And boo to the penguin killers.

I #$%^$$% hate Verizon!
Remember the fun time I spent on the phone for 2 hrs? Well, an hour ago Verizon shut down my cell phone and sent me an email that they were shutting down my internet because my internet has never been paid since I first signed up for it.
Uhh, no....
Kids, if any of you have Verizon ***DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT*** opt for their Easy-Pay One Consolidated Bill plan. You will pay one big juicy bill every month with your Internet, Cell, and Landline all itemized on it and totalled up for your convenience; and then Verizon Internet and Cell will say they have never been paid!
They will waste your time as you straighten things out and overpay this, that, and the other (with promises they will credit you the extra you've paid on your next bill, or maybe the next one after that...) and then they will shut off your service anyway.
Thank gawd my beloved works for a (rival) phone co. I sent her a desperate TE message, and she called me on my landline (which doesn't have long distance so I couldn't call her) and listened to me bawl and snurfle into the phone. (Thank you, honey!)
Tomorrow is another day. Instead of eating b'fast I will be on the phone again with 10 or 15 of Verizon's Finest, trying to straighten out their scr*w up.
AT+T and Cingular, kids.... AT+T and Cingular. Tell 'em a Verizon Victim sent ya.

well, not saying we never blow it here at big mega telco, and I do works with some idiots*, I've seen some doozies.
Even done some of those orders myself :)
Like when I moved some poor guys phone service from his current address BACK TO THE SAME ADDRESS he was moving from.
But ya know what? Even brand spankin' new rep I fixed the problem, made it right, adjusted the charges apologized up down and sideways. 'cause that's what you do.
The last time I checked my job's still called customer service.
From the sound of things they: violated tarrifs and procedures in the first place, gave her wrong information then promised adjustments to correct that and did_not_do_them, the left had doesn't know what the right hand is doing, nobodys making proper notes, pending claims or follow up, nobody is doing what they say they are gonna do...and ...1 simple call from their left hand to their right hand makes this d&*^ whole thing go away.
Nobody is doing there f'ing job there.
TE TD, I'm gonna be sorry I said this but you have a question about your phone service or what to do, PM me before you call.
I told Knott when her service is back up this whole thing needs to be reported to

*hope none of my managers are on TE

Tygab-i think alot of folks rely on the party pills in order to stay awake at thier jobs....sad but true. Especially the folks who drive road trains-Who in thier right mind could drive from Perth to Sydney in 24-48hrs without caffiene etc...!!!
Penguin killers... The penguin colony at St Kilda is actually a major tourist attraction and i'm sure the folks who take care of the little creaturs are mighty upset!
Salsa-i think the temps have changed due to the tropical cyclone in the northern bit of WA...Heaps of weather warnings for the far north, goldfields & southern areas....http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/wa/
It's a relief in a way..but can i have 30c again please.
I'll post my next q here and on my indy500 thread-have any of you flown with Northwest Airlines? Please let me know if it's  or :) There's a cheap flight with Qantas/nw airlines-Perth-tokyo-seattle-van. I trust you ladies to tell me the truth...
The travel agent says I have to wait for Sinagpore airlines to advertise thier new fares before deciding whether to go that route...

Verizon Online - the power of Managers
Called the internet portion of Verizon this a.m., and clearly the chickie I spoke to was being recorded for quality assurance purposes. That's fine with me.
I was nice and polite, but made my opinion of Verizon's "One Bill" known. I had her restate several times that it was an error and my balance is zero, and she put a note on my acct stating that, also. My internet shouldn't be shut off in 10 days; but if I suddenly disappear from TE, somebody call Verizon, ok?
Now to drink coffee, eat b'fast, and gird my loins before calling Verizon Wireless again to find out what new game they are playing with my cell phone.
There's no place like Cingular, there's no place like Cingular <Knot tapping Keen-clad heels together>
PS: my phone still shocks me, but I can't afford a new one until this mess is cleaned up and I get my credits for the overpaid bill.

another peppy perky Northwest morning. Dark and wet. We're already breaking rainfall records here in Seattle, and it's only the 4th day of the year!
I started my new year exercise program by getting on my bike last night and pedalling for all I was worth (on a wind trainer) and STILL taking 30 minutes to do 6 miles. But in the safety of my basement I never worried about getting doored once. :D

11 years with da'phone co. I've seen a lot of fiascos, I've even caused some  but little as bad as this.
And what's with this "one bill" and 50 zillion different numbers? If it's a different department ok but why isn't anyone offering to transfer you AND introduce the call so they, internet, cell, phone line supposedly with the same company know what's going on?
I can picture exactly the call center situation, even down to the way the notes and acct look and what happened (it's the same root systems for all the RBOCS) but someone has to step up and "own the call" and clearly nobody has.

Yup, phone is still shocking me. Went to 3 different Verizon stores before I finally got one who could handle the issue. They said I need a new phone and a new battery, but because the phone is 6 months old I have to pay for the battery. (but not the phone, because it's covered by the warrantee still) $32 or something.
They didn't know what the problem was, but the tech said it's probably the PHONE not the battery, but I need to buy a new battery anyway, replace the whole set up.

Yes, I love my Cingular phone service, just not caring so much for the particular phone I have. I have never been able to hear people well b/c the volume on the Motorola I have doesn't adjust nearly high enough. I am in the market at this very moment for new phones and a phone plan. Their family plans are great. Lots of minutes, free call time, mobile to mobile free (very important to me these days)... And ladies, the rollover in itself has literally saved me 100's of dollars of overage charges, especially lately.
Have fun KG!
So AG, when are we headin' to your LBS? Let's get OTG to come along. Maybe we can talk her into a mtb too. Oh, and Gypsy Angel too. (Hey, GA, ya lurkin' out there hon?) Make a day of it. Then when you take me out on the trail, I might almost be able to keep up. :o

Oh yeah X, I have a Specialized Rockhopper. You will definitely need some suspension on this course. Bring OTG and anyone else - the more the merrier. And I would plan on coming up Thursday night or Friday and staying until Monday at the least. If you want to make a week out of it, my bday is actually the 2nd and we could travel 'round and do lots of riding and camping and drinking and such. To get to Wisconsin go to Ohio, continue straight through until you hit IL and hang a right. That ought to do it.
BMo3 - score on the carpet pad! Hang in there with the noise - just think of the relief that they're taking care of it and you won't have mold. You don't want mold, trust me.

Knot - ((hugs)) on your Verizon crap. I could tell you a story about them as well. I don't have dsl because I REFUSE to put in a Verizon line. I found a company called powercom that services my area so that's who my land line is through.
Trek - it's nice to know there's some good cs people in the phone world girl! Way to keep out Knot sane through this all.
Mimi - you inspire me to start riding my trainer. I took all the batteries out of my computers to reset them and the only one that won't turn back on is the one I use on my trainer. Go figure.

If it weren't for all the damm early termination fees, I'd jump ship RIGHT NOW and go to Cingular.
In fact, I should call Cingular and tell them how p'o'd I am with Verizon, and ask them if they can start me up for free or give me a discount or something so I can afford to switch.

As for tri training, I am working on it. Good grief I just got back on the trainer last night. It was 50 this morning with 100% humidity. I may have to just train in the monsoon rains. *sigh* We have a 1 1/2 years to complete a tri and we need to figure out which one to do. :)
AG- Did you mention a date tonight? More details are required, I believe it is a TD rule. :p Youe son is going to participate in a tri, I am impressed. I need to get my bum in gear. If I could, I would get an artificial tree as now would be the best time to buy.
Dar-How was the date?
Knot- Were you able to resolve your cell phone problems?
OTG-Trader Joe's is a wonderful place to shop.
Kit-I look forward to chatting with you. :)

Verizon still hasn't seen fit to turn my phone back on.
That stinks. :( I am sorry, it must be terribly frustrating.
In fact, I should call Cingular and tell them how p'o'd I am with Verizon, and ask them if they can start me up for free or give me a discount or something so I can afford to switch.
It is worth a try. It never hurts to ask. :)
Don't I get to keep my same cell phone number no matter who my carrier is?
Ug.
Yes, you can keep the same number. :)

Dar: Still looking for team members? I think I want to race! I've contacted a friend of mine that's an Elite racer and he said he'd coach me...so that gives me 6mos. to work on my bunny hops. How was your date?
AG - I already have you on the team:D I still consider myself a novice and I don't know how to bunny hop. But I can stay on my bike for the 14 mile loop! Lots of single track, some rocks, 2 hills called B*tch 1 and 2. So practise for these conditions. You'll need to plan on coming up Thursday so we can preride that night. Friday would be an off day. If you want to stay after we can go white water rafting. If I don't get enough women to want to race you'll have to bring your coach with you. So how was the date?
My date sucked. Cheap, boring. Get this, he hemmed and hawed because he didn't want to order a sandwich so we split an appetizer and here was the clincher - he used his credit card to pay the $16 bill and TELLS me I can leave a $3 tip. I thought he was kidding and almost laughed but he wasn't. It's not that I wouldn't have minded splitting the cost but he asked me out, drank 2 beers to my one can of pop and instead of asking me if I wanted to split the cost, tells me. WTF? And after he complained about how cheap some of his clients are. I won't be seeing this dude again.....
BMo3 - congrats on the trainer! Keep it up girl, and I'm so happy for you!
CWR - good luck today! We're thinking about ya - I hope you get some pampering afterwards.
Mimi - I logged my first 10 miles last night. Off to bj to record them.

Dar: I'm really excited! I was looking for a new challenge, and that seems just the ticket. It looks like I'll have lots of support too...a lot of my friends also MTB and are rearing to get on the trails with me...although, there might be a little "misery loves company" in that...I've seen some of there battle wounds  Sorry your date sucked, I was at a club meeting last night and met the Specialized rep...he's originally from WI and quite the hottie! (but I guess him to be about 25...)
Knott: there must be some way to get out of that contract...they were the ones that breeched it by turning of your service when they shouldn't have.
The Danskin tri looks cool...what distance is it...Olympic, Sprint? With all of the trips I've already scheduled, I don't know if Seattle would work this year...but maybe in 2008...with X and BMo3. But in the meantime...the metro New York would be a cool on for 2007. I love Sandy Hook...OTG, what do you think?
Tonights date: Divorced, 42, 15 year old daughter. Avid cyclist, works for the State fish and boat commission. We've had some really great conversations...both seem to be on the same page. So I'm really looking forward to it. I'll keep you posted!
Kit: Congratulations! I have an apartment full of hand me down furniture myself...so I don't think I can help you out much there, but I expect you to post your new address so I can send a housewarming gift!
Woohoo! BMo3 on bike!
CWR, wishing you an easy surgery and speedy recovery.
I've been somewhat too lazy to get out on the bike this week, but I've been running twice. Took the bike to work yesterday in the hopes of a mid-day ride when it was warm and sunny, but didn't make it out. Spent too much time writing a letter to the editor and letters to legislators (too upset to do otherwise). This weekend looks nice for riding.

Looks as though I will not be able to run in The Flying Pig Marathon this year :( (my oldest is being confirmed that day). SO I am slating The Flying Pig for 2008.
The Danskin Tri will also need to be slated for 2008, as DH will be out of the country this August.
I am still trying to figure out the indoor tri. The site is either wonky or my computer is not playing nicely with me. :p
Back to finding some events for this year.
Dar-I am so sorry your date was that bad. :( At least you found out right away.

Jeez, you ladies are gabby this morning!! I know I'm going to leave out someone, so sorry ahead of time. I'll work my way back....
Deb, go get 'em tiger. If you need some signatures on any petitions, give me a shout.
AG - So cool that D is doing a tri! I am free this weekend hon. Just give me the word and some directions. Btw, we have a Trader Joes? I didn't know that. I say we go tear the place apart. As for the date at Bube's, (said boobies) I recommend the Seafood Mornay. Delish. The martinis are wonderful too. Don't wear heels if you can get away with it. Stone floors are uneven due to the nature of the beast and there are a ton of steps to Bube's cuz it's underground in the catacombs. They will give you a tour and history lesson when you get there so arrive a bit early. Have fun. (very romantic lighting too, hint, hint )
OTG - come on out and play!! Pleeeeease?!! :D
Dar - It is totally up in the air as to what is going to happen to me this year but I will try very hard to make it. Sorry about the date dear. One frog down, one step closer to the prince. ;)
Trek and Knot - mornin'! Sorry about the phone sitch not getting better. I say dump their azz and go with cingular. Happiness has no pricetag. The Danskin is very do-able. But BMo3 is in charge here, so refer all inquiries to her. "Mongo is just pawn in game of life..." (I love that movie.)
CWR - in a few hours, you will be done, getting your followup xrays and then heading home with your friend to recover. I will be thinking of you all day. It's a bit much the first day so just try to drop someone a note when you can. Until then, know that we all love you and are here for you anytime sis. :) :)
BMo3 - all is very well. I struggled to stay awake last night but we got to connect as I was drifting off. So glad I hung in there. The morning has proven to be bright as well. Relax today and thank you for all of your help. It made all of the difference in the world. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! (Btw, did ya get the massage? It really is better when you're on your back. ;))
And Kit - I've already said what I needed to say to you I think. Have a beautiful day sis. Tomorrow, you move into your new home. I'm so happy for you!! xoxo.
Alright, since I did not hit the lottery again this week, I'm outta here. There are people waiting to be shot. I mean xrayed. ;)

barf! What was nice about your date is you won't have to waste a lot of time trying to figure out if he's mr right.
i went down and rode another 6 miles last night but i got a funny pain in my leg while working out and then obsessed about blood clots in the middle of the night. (just what i need)
Jen, glad you got on your bike. it's a start!
Knot that phone thing really suks. i can't believe how much trouble you're having with them. Go to the other company and then take them to small claims court if they try to collect. Ah really, you know what to do, you don't need my dumb advice.

Disputed ammounts on your phone bill do not have to be paid, check the information on the back of your phone bill.
However...since Verizon can't seem to establish a simple pending claim (that's where we set the disputed charges to the side so that you don't have to pay 'em) I think telling a manager that you're going to the FCC is the way to go is the way to go.

WARNING:grossness to follow...
I remember once when my older daughter was about 7 or so. I was painting our bathroom. I had already painted one coat very carefully, and was just putting the finishing touches on one wall, when my daughter RAN into the bathroom, looked at me for a brief movement with desperation and green face, and then sprayed projectile vomit ALL OVER the whole bathroom wall I was just finishing.
I stood in shock, watching the many chunky trails slowly drip and tumble down the wall artistically, then I asked her "Um...why didn't you hurl into the toilet?- it's right HERE!" She answered "I don't know, Mommy, it just came out!"
Being a good mommy, of course, I helped her to bed and reassured her (knowing she felt bad). But I still wonder about it after all these years.... Kids.

I work night shift in the ER which is why my lurking is usually done at this time... 1:30am on my nights off when I can't sleep. My sense of humor is slightly twisted and I'll try to keep that in check for a while!:o
I look forward to getting to know you all and spending time here... unlurked.
Ride hard,

There are also: Budget, National, Enterprise, Alamo, and maybe some other more or less national companies I'm forgetting, like Rent-A-Wreck (probably best forgotten?). And then there are local companies, such as dealerships that have a rental office. I know that locally back in my home town the Toyota dealership often had the best deal, but only if we were picking up and turning in right there, not if we needed to pick up and/or drop off at the airport, and not if we needed a one-way rental.
Our town went smoke-free on 1/1 so last night we went out with friends and did an old fashioned pub crawl to show the bar owners our support (they were all positive they'd go bankrupt over the ban)...I am now in possession of an old fashioned hangover. :o

*grumph* while I'm very happy for the couple next-door, it's getting *really* hard to sleep.   do you *know* what kind of dreams that inspires?!
...oh! hey! it's 6am. I can see about a couple more hrs of sleep. :D ;)
I just spent a most pleasant night in freaky warm weather sleeping in my hammock in the back yard. Swinging in the breeze, listening to rain on the tarp overhead. No better way to sleep. It was 60F and almost too warm. Though once when I work up and moved, my noise spooked an animal that sounded to be about 10 feet away and took off. It sounded like a deer - saw one in the yard last week. And I think some other animal must have peed in one of my shoes. The shoes (Crocs-type rubber clogs) were together and well under the tarp, so I don't think the rain got them wet. And only one was wet, and my wet sock smelled like pee when I took it off.

That last sentence was hard to interpret when using the definition of couple from the first sentence. Try a hammock in the backyard next time, Kit. Good sleeping, I guarantee (depending on where your back yard is, I suppose).

Deb, that's so cool. I love being outside in warm/dry enough weather, and in the summer I am happy to sleep outside on a good night. I have camped in enough places to fully appreciate what can happen overnight too (rain, animals, temperature changes etc). It's good to hear it didn't get too cold. Is your hammock a traditional rope one or do you have one of the very neat backpacking hammocks? I have been looking at those as a nice to have someday, so backpacking could be even lighter. Over the past 2 summers I have only kayak camped or drive-in camped, no carrying the tent! I also yurt camped in winter a few years ago (during elsewhere mentioned Long Trail snowshoeing). That was probably some of the most fun camping I've ever done, due to it being such a unique experience. It actually bugs me that most of the state parks close on labor day - when September is probably the best month of our year for outdoors fun! Even early October is usually pretty darn nice too! But I know 'the world' forgets about outdoors fun after labor day, and that's nice in other ways (so nice to kayak and be one of the only ones out there).
But yes, being able to sleep outside at this time (not in the cold) of year is very remarkable!

Sorry about that Kit. Hotels can get a bit loud sometimes. My thought on this sitch is... If you are being woke up at 6:00, you obviously didn't drink enough last night. Go back to the bar and then go back to bed. Of course, don't drink so much that you lose those dreams. Drunken dreams of drunken debauchery are the best. :D
Today is the big move in day and I wish you the best of luck. If you need anything, please call hon. (((Kit)))
Welcome GA!! Glad to have you aboard!! *slowly, slowly the PA girls are taking over* We finally are starting to see a slow down in our ER. Hope it is getting better for you guys as well. Tough year for respiratory stuff. Wow.
Deb - you are too cool. I remember those days. I used to love to do that, sleep in a hammock in the backyard. No one got it though. *sigh* So I gave it away cuz of the friction and misunderstandings it caused. (Should have given away the S.O. instead.) Sorry about the crocs too. Jeez. Try hanging them on a sheppard's hook or something next time. :)
Hey CC, I've always liked Hertz rentals, FWIW. So, what's the final plan on Ian's b-day? Indy?
Knot - I don't know where everyone else went, but I was, um, yeah... ok, forget it. Next subject. :o  :D
((((((CWR)))))) So glad the new med worked better hon. Take it easy and come back and play real soon, k? Love ya.
So, it's time to get out of the house and do my running around. Getting the bike adjusted today and sending out some packages to my SS and others. Going to look at getting some type of step side thingy for my Jeep or I'm gonna seriously throw my back out trying to get my Mom in there. 4'11". Phew.
Anyway, lots to catch up on. See y'all later. Be safe. (I mean that. ;))
Deb, that's so cool. ... Is your hammock a traditional rope one or do you have one of the very neat backpacking hammocks? I have been looking at those as a nice to have someday, so backpacking could be even lighter.
My hammock is homemade base on the Speer design (www.speerhammocks.com) with my own design of overbag/bottom insulation and bug netting. I could send you pics or answer questions if you are interested. The hammock and tarp are very easy sewing projects. The hammock is one piece of 1.9 oz uncoated ripstop nylon with knots in the ends to attach webbing for tree straps.

I think I feel to sh*tty to try to catch up. I rode a 200k today, which completes my R12 award. Let's just say that, after calling in sick Wednesday and Thursday, I was not really recovered from whatever GI issues I had going on. I started wishing it was over at 40m, really wishing it was over at 60m, started having BAD stomach or something pain at 70 or 80, but still finished in ten hours total. I think my ride time was 8 or 8.5. I ate pasta for breakfast, drank Gatorade, Sweet Tea, Coke, Green Tea. I ate ten Pringles and a handful of Cape Cod chips, and one bite of a Nectar Bar, and two bites of a Clif Bar, and a bag of Sport Beans. My stomach was saying no to food, but luckily let me continue to eat electrolyes. Luckily, it was enough. (Oh, unlike last year, the coldest ride of my life, it was 80, with 80% humidity. maybe warmer. To top it all off, we have reason #10 to wear panties under your bike shorts. So when I had to excuse myself from the nice RBA's wife's dinner she wanted to make me, to go to the bathroom, which I was unable to ride to before sh*tting out my entire guts into my bike shorts- I had something (panties) to wash up with and clean the bathroom with before putting on soaking wet bike shorts and slinking to my car, but not before being busted by the teenage daughter...
Hope everyone else is having a better time today.

I really did my best to look pathetic at 12:15 when my husband was getting ready to go out the door. I even fell asleep reading. But he ignored me and when it was time to go, I was ready. Aside from burning the sweet 'taters, dinner was really good. I'll keep the recipe for Pork Tenderloin Diane in my favorites:
1 (1-pound) pork tenderloin, trimmed and cut into 1-inch-thick slices
3/4 teaspoon lemon pepper
2 teaspoons butter
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Sprinkle pork with lemon pepper. Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add pork slices to pan; cook 3 minutes on each side or until browned. Remove from pan; keep warm.
Add juice and remaining ingredients to pan; cook 1 minute, stirring frequently. Return pork to pan; cook 1 minute or until thoroughly heated, turning to coat.

Thank goodness neither SKnot nor my beloved are here to witness this. Only the dog, and all *he's* thinking is, "do I get to lick out the pan when she's done? Huh? Do I? Huh?" <wag, wag, hopeful brown-eyed gaze>

bmo3 - Peets is nectar of the gods. It is what other coffees hope to be when they grow up. It is the ultimate in coffeedom.
Now I must buy some. I cannot live without coffee. Nectar of the gods, sounds perfect for me.
Edited to add: I want this
Indo-Pacific - Three Pound Sampler
Explore the Indo-Pacific island regions with flavors ranging from woodsy to nutty and earthy. Characterized by heavy body and smooth acidity, this sampler comes with a pound each of Sumatra, New Guinea and Sulawesi-Kalosi.
Sumatra: This is the classic Indonesian coffee. Very full bodied with concentrated flavor, Sumatra is also sweet, and slightly earthy, with a gutsy richness.
New Guinea: A mild, mellow yet aromatically complex coffee. New Guinea's good body, moderate acidity and broad flavor make it one of the best coffees in the world.
Sulawesi-Kalosi: A rare coffee with unusual depth and complexity. Sulawesi-Kalosi has a multi-dimensional aromatic character with prominent herbal, nutty, and pleasantly sweet woodsy notes.

In my crock-pot right now:
Beef and Mushroom stew
1 cheap steak, cubed
1 1/2 heads of garlic, cloves left whole
1 pound or so of mushrooms, cubed
1 bay leaf (not as good as the fresh ones in California!)
1 handful of rosemary
water to fill pot to 2 inches below surface of ingredients
Edit: I just added a cubed potato because the stew was lookin' a bit wimpy
One of the very cool thing about cooking with mushrooms is the way they all of a sudden COOK and become cooked mushrooms and juice. I like cooking with mushrooms. Costco sells monster-huge bags of dried sh*takes, and someday I'll try them out. (Mmmmm, sh*take with chicken garlic ginger coconut milk cilantro and Thai hot sauce) (yup, almost Tom Kha Gai)

Stinky Butt Dog is an omega-dog neutered male.
His goal in life is to be bossed around. I don't think there will be a problem. Mae and SBD have smelled each other on my clothes and such, and SBD "gave" Mae one of his stinky ol' stuffed squeaky toys. (more SBD smell, and in a fun package, too!) She reacted just fine. And Mae likes me, even though I smell like SBD.
(Mae likes me cuz i "gave" her a *really* good chewy toy at my last visit: my $1,000 bite splint! Oh, boy! What fun! Crunchy and chewy and smelly! :p )

sorry about that :o
Mae is a pound pet, lab/pitt/sumthin/sumthin/sumthin/sumthin....she looks like a yellow lab.
She has met and likes :D chickens, pigs, geese, horses, llamas, a kangaroo, cows, cats that she considers her cats and all kinds of people ... but right after DPITA adopted her I found she went ape shot, nutso crazy dog if she so much as saw another dog.
So Mae and I sat down and had a chat and I told her dogs on this planet are only allowed where dogs can go, so it's likely that she's going to see other dogs because she's not the only one in the world and has to get used to that.
And we worked and worked and worked, I took her to an obedience class (which she had to attend from an adjacent room) and continualy socialise her. I got custody of the dog at the break up, she's my dog.
She may never be a dog I can just set loose in the dog park but she enjoys going there, seeing the dogs, sliding on the kiddy slide there ;-) and getting treats for calm behavior.
And now she has some doggie pals: Presley who is probably the worlds homliest dog who she sees on walks here and likes, a shepard and two dalmations she visits through the fence on walks, something she'd never have before.
But this Mickey dog was an enormous step for her.

I spent some time today modifying my hammock by sewing buckles onto the straps near the hammock and loops in the strap ends. Now, instead of having 7 feet of strap attached to each end of the hammock, it has short pigtails with buckles. And instead of wrapping straps 3-4 times around the tree and tying a knot, I just girth hitch them and thread them through the buckles. Now I can adjust it easily without retying knots. Here's a picture. The green part is the hammock, the gray part is an overbag that I slide around the hammock after I'm inside to keep my bottomside warm.

When my parents lived in Santa Rosa their neigbors had a wallabee they had rescued (being neglected at a petting zoo I think). On visits we'd walk to the neighbors to see the wallabee. One day I took Mae and whadya know over the fence there was an inter species moment, the wallabee hopped over and the two touched noses through the fence.
Friends! :D
From then on whenever I visited all I needed to say is "want to see the kangaroo?" and Mae would lead us there, look through the fence and her friend would hop over.
I have some photos but they are not very clear of this because of the growth on the fence.
A few years ago I found out that this beautiful animal had been killed by a loose dog. I wrote the neighbors, sent them copies of the pictures and thanked them because their wallabee was one of Maes first friends and helped her. They sent back a very nice note.

Well, nice try, but that can't be a true troll. Real trolls turn to stone if they're out in daylight. This one (http://home.hib.no/mediesenter/mytobib/illos/kitt.troll.jpg)
has been "stoned" so long he's got trees growing on him. At that stage you can safely camp underneath them, or fish alongside them, or whatever.
On the way to the airport, crossing the river from H@ll to Værnes, there's a bridge with a door in it. We think a troll lives there, but we've never seen it. Apparently it's a smart troll that never goes out in daylight.

I tried everything I could think of to make it work - recharged battery, tried plugging it in the wall, made sure it was on, made sure it wasn't on the video thing to your tv. All to no avail. I couldn't find my receipt but had the box, my cc statement and BB wouldn't help me. So I held onto it for 6 months and returned it after Christmas. Dude from the Geek squad plugs it in, switches button from video to tv setting to the dvd player and viola! It works. I appreciated that he didn't make me feel like an idiot in front of everyone and now my ds can watch movies on his way home from dads. Geesh.
I started a new workout program today and, being the extremist I can be, opted for the strict bodybuilder type diet for the first six days to jump start my weight loss. It consists of split workouts - cardio in the am and cardio/strength at night. Coupled with the 2500 race on bj I will be working out for 7 days a week this week. Oh, and did I mention it's only 1200 calories:eek: I'm predicting a grumpy, slightly dizzy Dar by tomorrow. I emailed them this morning to see how to incorporate my cycling into this workout so I don't kill myself. I am just so frustrated with my weight and need to be in shape this summer so I can enjoy myself. Plus it's a promise I've had to myself for years - to be in the best shape of my life when I turn 40 in August. Now here I sit sadly counting down the next 20 minutes so I can eat my 2 1/4 cups of salad with one tblsp of dressing and 1/2 cup ff cottage cheese:p I want to lose 30 pounds in 18 weeks, so I have the weight off and can eat to sustain longer distances on the bike to prep for the 24 hour race at the end of July. Will you be my cheering section? I'm going to take the dreaded "before" pix tonight...

Dar,
Did you check with a doctor or nutrionist abut eating only 1200 calories with all of the exercise you plan to do? And I will be cheering you on, just want to make sure your healthy. :)
Survey: 1 in 5 managers read e-mail in the loo
http://www.boston.com/business/ticker/2007/01/survey_1_in_5_m.html
"Nearly one in five small business managers read work-related e-mails and other documents while in the bathroom, and 49 percent say they work while driving."

Uh, no:rolleyes: I can honestly say I've never checked with a dr. before starting a workout. But if I start getting dizzy I'll have to add calories. Actually, I'll have to figure out what expenditure the workouts will give me and figure out the deficit. I don't want to lose more than 2-3 pounds a week. I'm no Mike Magnason you know! Anyone know a good way to figure this out??

You can log your workouts free online, there are several sites that will estimate your caloric expenditure. The only reason I brought it up is because I easily burn around 900 calories if I do an aerobic workout in the morning and an exercise routine in the evening. That would leave my body with give or take 300 calories-not good, I would lose muscle not fat. :(
Just something to consider. All I want is for you to stay healthy. :)

Dar, honestly, I would be more concerned with the activity level and making sure you have a correct carb/protein balance than watching caloric intake. I'm sure either people will back me up or correct me (open to either...) but the body tends to notice when activity level is greater than the calories consumed and will eventually adjust the entire metabolism (i.e. slow it down!) to adjust so you don't "starve to death". Work on building muscle and your intake of proteins to facilitate this new muscle, and the metabolism will increase as muscle burns fat. It's a more gradual change, but avoids the risk of burnout and metabolic changes.
1200 would be 'alright' for someone totally sedentary, but with any kind of activity level, you need to fuel yourself.
Maintain your blood sugar levels, etc etc. The more you can do without your body feeling 'stressed' the better off you are.

Kit, you stated that much better than me. :p Yep the body will shut down not only the metabolism but will store fat and burn muscle. Not good, in my opinion, but I work on burning fat gaining lean muscle.
Dar, there are some really great discussion about this on the forum. I think they are in the Triathalon section.
Jen-who needs to shed 20 pounds of fat and gain lean muscle in place of the aforementioned fat.:o

Thanks guys. The daily 1200 calories is just for the first week to jump start me and consists of 120 grams of protein, 80 grams of carbs and 45 grams of fat. This lower carb week will hopefully force my body to use stored fat (is that right?). After that I will jump to 1600 cal/day with more of a 40/30/30 split. Anyway, I'm logging it all on beachbody.com but there are errors on their pages for calorie expenditures and body fat sites. Any ideas for other ones?
I am going to have so much gas with all these salads:eek: Good thing you guys are in cyber world, lol!

ediets.com always treated my mom well. For an activity lvl like yours, I'd be more tempted to say 18-2000 calories, actually. Just to be safe. Not sure on the ratios. I know everyones' metabolism's different, but this is just my $.02. At my SOMA job, I'm okay with 2000, and gain weight (just a little) on 3000. When I'm really active, though, I'm okay with 3000... never gone beyond that.
focus on fiber, water, and nutritional supplements to make sure that when cutting back on your diet you're not sacrificing nutrition.
Atkins' is really not that bad, but I don't entirely agree with the protein to carb ratio. don't forego them completely, esp. if you're working out. Lean proteins like tofu, beans, turkey (and ground turkey) etc are good for you. :D
Oh, and complex carbs. Basically, eat like a diabetic is "supposed" to. Everyone should, anyway.... theoretically.

BMo3 - And just where were you when I was buying a bike yesterday? Yeah, that's right, talking to AG on my phone! That was an interesting conversation with the S.O. last night. Non-bikers just don't get it I tell ya. However, the bike is staying. Period. (Pounce is soooo sweet, Jen. We went out back in the woods this morning for a short, rainy ride. **tingly shivers** :D)
Hey Dar, I think your goal to lose weight before your next b-day is great. I agree with the ladies here on the advice given so far. I can see it if you only do the jump start of 1200 for one week but I definitely wouldn't keep that up longer. Personally, I would do about 1600 for myself for that period, but I know how my body burns. Yours may be much different.
Now, did I read that you signed me up for your race? I still need to see if I can get any days off besides my weekends (which I already have off).
Queen - Congratulations!! That is wonderful. So at 17 years, that puts you, um let's see, about 3/4 through the honeymoon stage by my calendar. Good for you!! :D
Deb - I just love your backyard. That hammock is so cool too. I really need to get one again and lay out under the stars. Not as much fun alone though. Jammy party at Deb's place. BYOH(ammock)

No, no, no. When I called, I ended up talking to your DH because someone wouldn't cut her workout short by 8 minutes to keep me from buying a bike. Right then was when I was deciding whether or not to buy. I needed you and you were somewhere over there lifting your leg (or whatever). Then when I was paying for her, I handed the phone off so you two could talk face to face, so to speak. Pardon me for trying to bring people together in this world. :p (Yeah, I'm so glad she adopted me too. Sooooooo, when can we schedule another play date? ;)) So, I'm checking out some SPD's to put on, I've got a spare pump and bottle cage already. My shoes are compatible already. Now, I need to find someone to ride. (with) :o
Oh, btw BMo3, thanks for telling me how to get rid of my attachments. Much appreciated. I didn't know I could do that. All of the incriminating ones are now gone. There are somethings that do not need to be seen by the whole world for posterity. And now that we've been "outed".... hehe.

Bikerotica is only for us special people, what with the sexy curves and angles of Pounce's strong, light frame, the sheen and silken smoothness of her paint, the way her levers feel under your fingertips, and her grips in your hands... I can only imagine what' it's like to have that first ride on a virgin bike... to feel every little nuance, the slight differences in handling, posture, the soft dip of the shocks as weight is transferred back and forth... Crisp shifting and the way you can stand on the pedals and rock the bike to hold balance... Nothin' like a new machine between yer knees. :D

bikerotica. For me, it's lusting after bikes I can't have. I like my Bianchi a lot, but fickle soul that I am, I don't lust after it like i did before I got it. That's just like a man! I don't understand. maybe after a longer relationship, filled with give and take love will build. It's a strange deal,. My feelings increased when I discovered someone else with a bike just like it. FICKLE FICKLE FICKLE. It's my favorite bike, but how awful is it to realize that with a piece of plastic (credit card) my veloce would be speedily religated to the back of the garage. Even worse, several people have suggested that i pull the components off of it and put them onto a new bike. THAT almost makes me ill! What would I do with an old Veloce bicycle frame? Kind of like having your pet cat stuffed after YOU killed it. I am so confused, I need help.

Mimi - did you look into that Terry?
Bike Theology:
The bike's soul is in the frame, the components are like clothes or earrings or something. You can change them out or take them off, the bike is still "there" in the frame.
Sell or give the frame to someone, and you've given them the "bike." All you have at that point are components.
Now, which tube contains the bike's soul? If you have to replace a tube... say cuz you ran your bike on the roof-rack into your carport... have you changed the bike's soul?
Deep things to ponder while you are dosed up on Day-Quil, eh?

Yes, these are definitely deep things to ponder! But you have to admit,
taking the components off a bike renders it, uh.. unusable? I hate to use the words I really want to say.
Kitsune06
01-08-2007, 12:56 PM
I think the bike/soul theology is the same as the human body/soul theology. The soul is beyond the physical bike itself or the sum of its parts. That said, you need a tube replaced or any of the components etc, that'd be similar to some kind of surgery or injury- in the end, still the same person, fundamentally; their soul is unaltered through the process. If something irreparable happens to the bike and it's no longer useable at all, it has 'died' physically, but its soul is free to escape and become part of some new bike getting soldered together at Specialized just this very moment.
Somewhere there must be a pagan biker version of Hoof and Horn that goes 'Wheel and Crank'... ;)

I felt bad this morning because I had to kill a little mouse. :(
We keep mousetraps set in the basement, because otherwise mice move in from outdoors and start breeding amongst all our belongings and boxes. Our cats don't go down in the basement (too much oil, dirt and toxin dangers), otherwise there would be NO mouse problem at all. Our cats keep the main part of the house totally mouse-free.
I don't use mouse/rat poison because 1)the cats might eat a dying poisoned mouse if they ever got hold of one, and 2) it's a way slower way more painful death than a mousetrap. I hate the idea of little mice crawling around in agony while they die from poison.
In the fall and winter, I find at least one mouse a week dead in my traps- their necks instantly broken. Very, very efficient.
This morning I was sad to find a mouse that somehow had survived this- had the bar down on his neck but was still very much alive. :( I felt really bad. I knew I had to kill him quickly to end his suffering. Just couldn't bring myself to smash him with something. So I had to drown him. :( :( :( I filled abucket with warm water, dropped him in trap and all, and weight him down with a flowerpot. I felt so BAD! Came back late to fish him out and toss him in the woods.
Mousetraps work GREAT and 99.999% of the time they work in the blink of an eye.
I feel pretty bad about it.

Oh, LIsa, I'm sorry. I would hate to kill a little mouse. I have had to kill two rats in the last few years. I felt bad about the first, but not the second.
I caught a mouse at my office a few years ago, took it in to show my boss (holding it by its tail) and then I let it go OUTSIDE.
