When Dad OL did a ritual and channeled Hermes"
Dad Out-Law is an ecclectic pagan priest and channeled the god Hermes for a ritual.

I have occasionally seriously wondered when (or if) body modification crosses the line from "art" to just plain sad self mutilation. First there are society-accepted forms of body modification- such as pierced earrings, artificial nails, liposuction, dental braces, breast implants, plastic surgery, girdles, waxing and electrolysis, cosmetic dental procedures, hair implants, etc. (Oh the things we'll do for vanity!) Then, there's "alternative" piercing and tattooing and scarring and branding, seeking pain as ecstasy, etc....so then what about setting yourself on fire, running a knife through your hand, or lopping OFF your ear instead of just having 20 holes pierced in it? Is it ALL "art" and "self expression", even to the point of killing yourself (an extreme example, for sure!).
It's amazing what we will embrace and what we won't. Somehow, it is acceptable to surgically open the natural breast and insert silicone implants, but not to place silicone bead implants in the penis for the purpose of sensation. Somehow it is acceptable to cut the foreskin from an infant male who has no choice in the matter for religious purposes, but illegal, immoral and 'wrong' to remove the hood and labia from an infant female for the same reasons.

Then that makes me think about people who have been through awful accidents and been burned and scarred and amputated...they would give anything to have their bodies be the way they were
I believe the feelings would be because those who have been scarred, who have lost limbs, had no choice in the matter... then there's nullification (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_nullification) which is done for one's own personal reasons. I can't argue for or against, but people I know who've been party to it have done so because that offending hand or foot or set of fingers is not in synch with their mental picture of themselves. And this is a need to remove it to the point where one will utterly destroy the limb or appendage to the point where it cannot be saved. Sometimes after this, they're ok and everything 'feels' right to them... sometimes, they have body or gender dysmorphia- apotemnophilia. They will *never* feel 'right' in their bodies, continue to change, remove, etc, but never attain that state of perfection.
To find the line between self-destruction and art, we must ask those who perform these acts. A woman who brands does so safely and with an artistic vision in mind. A woman who cuts self destructively makes slashing movements hither and thither with a razor blade for the sensation and with the intent to destroy.
I think to understand these motivations, however foreign to us, is to have a unique insight into the relationship between the mind and the body. To know that one's 'self' is not necessarily always dictated by the outward appearance.
I would look into the USCOBM (http://www.uscobm.com/) for a better definition than I can convey...
I'm lucky... with the sum of mankinds' experiences at one's fingertips available the questioning mind-the internet- available to my young and porous mind during my formative years, I believe I was gifted with understanding of things I would never have otherwise come in contact with... and I think I'm a better person for it, and I love trying to explain things, as well...

Hmmm, maybe I missed the big deal of it all. :o I spend all day with the women at my small town, closed minded community hospital. They talk about spending $180 on a haircut and color. They complain about their manicurist and how she didn't quite get the effect with the glitter like she used to. They are in their late 30's and still use the year they graduated HS in their email addresses. Actually, they identify each other by what year they graduated HS as well. They complain that they are getting fat while stuffing their pie holes with goodies and then doing nothing to work it back off. They all wear the same socks from Old Navy, the same shoes by Crocks, the same scrubs by UA... They read the same books as each other (only christian novels) and then look at me crossways when I read some Bronte or Dante's 'The Divine Comedy'. They won't ask what they are about, they just like to judge my books by their covers. It makes their lives easier to swallow and they are able to stay in their little world and not think about the outside too deeply. I am very much at odds with people who are like that.

I don't pretend to understand why some people do what they do to themselves. I don't expect them to fully understand me either. But I do always try to keep a very open mind and accept them as they are. I tend to be able to find something good in everyone so, I like almost everybody. I have no intention on changing anyone but myself while I'm here on this earth. Along the way though, I have found that we can't fully grow as a person if we shut out everything or everyone who may be slightly distasteful in our eyes. How does one judge what is good to them if they've never experienced anything but?

There are many things I see everyday that I wish I didn't. I've had things happen to me that I wish hadn't. And yet, they are a core part of how I have become who I am. I accept those experiences for what they have taught me. We all make our own choices and then have to live with them. They are not required to make sense to anyone but ourselves to be valid.

'Cuda ate through his bootie and licked the sutures so his foot bled again. We don't have bandages, so we put on an old sock and wrapped duct tape around his foot, and his ankle and his knee. He looks like he's trying to be a ballerina....on pointe when he stands on it, and then he keeps kicking his leg back to try to get that thing off his foot. :p As sad as that sounds, this is an improvement over the buddy collar, or whatever that huge cone is called. With that he just shakes his head around and paws at it trying desparately to remove it.

The thing about border collies is: put them in a new environment with an obstacle and they believe the objective we want them to achieve is to overcome the obstacle. And they usually do.

Can I learn something about life from this?

oh, yes, I'll stop at the vet tomorrow to get proper bandage materials, we'll redress it as best we can tomorrow night, let it breathe for awhile, and probably revisit a slightly less agressive duct tape strategy for the next day at work.

LBTC one thing i used for peanut was bitter apple (http://www.bitterapple.com/). i would put it on top of her dressing and she would leave it alone. though you have to spray some in their mouth first, and then they realize (quickly) that it isn't good. peanut even sees the bottle and she's shaking her head and running. though she doesn't touch her dressing anymore when i have to put one on her.

Now that I'm home I can post e-collar pix. Chloe had one last year when she had corneal ulcers. HATED IT! Two collar stories.

She woke me up in the middle of the night, rubbing her eyes - big no-no. So on went the collar. I swear she sat on the bed and stared at me for hours after. You haven't lived until you've been glared at for hours by a corgi.

Another time she had it on after seeing the eye doctor. She had to go outside, it was raining. I figured she'd run out, pee, run back in. When she didn't appear at the door, I went looking for her. She was sitting in the middle of the lawn, head hanging down, rain running off the collar. She looked absolutely pitiful. I went out and removed the collar - she bounced across the yard, peed, then ran indoors.

'Cuda is no longer looking like a ballerina, but he is walking on his foot less. Part of me thinks this is a good thing. He's got a proper bandage on, covered by a sock which is fairly liberally (not as much as before) duct taped on. We'll replace the sock probably every evening and morning, and hope to replace the bandage every second day. He would so much rather be playing with the soccer ball right now!

heh, and so would I. I would have loved to skip work today, but fear the consequences of each missed day. Can you say huge pile of work that I can't see the bottom of? :D

Well, we were wrong, and I feel bad about it, since the solution was right in front of us. Not my preferred option, but it is so far appearing as if it would have worked.

Got home today and he had chewed through all layers. His foot does not look good. We'll have to bring him back to the vet in the morning. Diva is going in for her teeth cleaning, so they can keep each other company I guess.

Well, it finally dawned on us that maybe if we drug him up with the demerol he'll stop wanting to chew it. Sure enough - it only takes a few minutes for the drugs to kick in and he's very relaxed, laying on the floor, not interested in licking the darned foot anymore. Now why did we not try this sooner????

Dang!

Anyway, hopefully he hasn't done so much damage that he'll have to lose his toe. I guess we'll find out tomorrow. Now it's cuddle time.

Queen, it is here (http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showpost.php?p=177325&postcount=2134). It helped me a lot. :D It's important to remember that our patients/clients aren't the only people we make an impact in during our day. There is the unknown schmoe who we walk past and give a little grin to. The guy next to us on the bus who is obvoiusly having a bad day. We give a little nod of 'I know how you feel buddy' and visibly see his shoulders relax a hair. The older woman who may need a hand under her elbow to keep her balance. Some like your clients, need more, something more tangible. But maybe had they had that initial eye contact, nod, a helpful touch, or a grin from people to begin with, things may not be so bad for them now. One never knows. I smile at everyone I pass at the hospital. I get to know everyone's name... from RN's and docs to housekeeping and the cafeteria. There are many total strangers out there that you can still impact in subtle but important ways. Caring is infectious and it can create miracles... good luck in your new career.

Take care Queen.

Perhaps one day, one of those homeless folks may by some small chance get off the streets & if that small miracle happens, perhaps they may think of the lovely lady that truly gave a **** & tried to help change thier life.

(that doesn't mean we don't need more of x, kg, knot, bm, trek, kit & all the other lovelies that wander here)

Anywho..I did the Level 1 Tri technical officials course today :) Now I just have to remember the blocking & drafting rules.. I have to do a small exam & then a practical at a tri on April 1st. If I don't want to enter a tri, the least i could do is try & help in some other form.

Take care

Thanks so much to all of you for the kind words of support, it really helps. Today I'm feeling a bit hollow and I think I need to go out for a short hike to help clear my head. I'm leaving for FL to visit my folks next Tuesday and am so looking forward to just sitting on the sand and staring at the ocean for a long while.

yes!!! oh, it breaks my heart that I can't find that CD! The Coldplay song doesn't seem to be in YouTube.

The song is "Clocks" from the album "Eastern Energy" by 12 Girls Band. It's available on iTunes. I might just have to buy it if I can't find the CD. Honestly, I like the 12 Girls version better than Coldplay's original version.

Remind me to check in the mess that is my car. We listened to it on the drive from Half Moon Bay but are you sure you took the CD out? I'm listening to Brad Paisley now

www.youtube.com/watch?v=OglKqv3tB7A

but it could be with the other CD's

Queen--I'm a little late on the uptake, too, but wanted to remind you of that story about the kid on the beach tossing beached starfish back into the water. There are virtually hundreds of them, and a guy comes along and says to the kid, "There are too many of them. You'll never be able to make a difference." The kid answers, as he tosses one more into the water, "It makes a difference to this one."

You made a difference to all those you DID help. But you can't toss starfish into the surf all your life--time to move on. Good luck with your next adventure!

May I ask what your new career is going to be?

Mimitabby- Congratulations! 29 years! You two rock! And what great gifts to commemorate the occasion!

Queen - find peace over these 3 weeks....let your grief come, examine it, accept it, and let it go on buttefly wings over that beautiful ocean.

DH is working today. If I'm a nice little wifey I'll get the house cleaned while he's gone. We've got 2 doggies in recovery today - 'Cuda's foot is now being treated as an "open" wound. Soak twice a day in epson salts, apply a salve twice a day, keep the collar on. Crazy how tight it has to be, but it is staying on there.

Diva had to have a tooth removed. :( Antibiotics twice a day and soft food for a few days.

I can keep this straight, really I can!

Tonight we'll watch Borat together. Ah, I'm looking forward to the comic relief!

Diva hasn't eaten yet. She's a fuss@$$ like her mom, but I think I'm going to have to tempt her with something special (and soft) pretty soon. 'Cuda is mostly pouting. But we spent a bit of time outdoors and even gently played with the soccer ball. He actually used the cone to pass the ball - which I've been trying to teach him anyway. It was nice, but we don't want to overdo it...poor open wounded foot! (I feel like we are terrible fur-parents :( )

Uh, what kind of trouble do you expect me to be getting into here? Mimi and CC - Yes, I happen to be a member of AAA for many, many years... I'm also having the Jeep serviced before I go, I have all my maps and plans laid out, I have all of the hotel reservations that are practical to have right now all taken care of, I am making time to say good bye to everyone I care about (and trying to not break down and cry every time), I've arranged to move my shift around at work on some of the last days so I can pack my truck for the journey and still keep going to work, and I'm managing to do this all by myself and still keep a sliver of sanity. I do have to admit though that I am still packing. Taking time to do all of the above things has gotten me behind considerably so I'm up late at night and up early in the morning to get it all done. I've survived on 4-5 hours of sleep for years as a student, so I guess I can do it now for something this important.

But, yes, absolutely YES, I am gonna let loose and have fun on my journey because I feel I earned it, baby. :D It took me a long time to get here in my life and I'm going to enjoy every moment of my roadtrip and my new life to the "fullest extent of the law". If you do it right, the law allows quite a bit...
just bear in mind all the little weird things-
a group of 4 or more in Eugene who are not wearing socks may be dispersed by the police as an "orgy". It's illegal to own certain things in certain states except as a 'novelty' like a... uh... cake topper or something...
In California it's illegal to peel onions in hotel rooms, and No unoccupied vehicle may exceed 60 miles per hour.
In Texas, it's *specifically* illegal to graffiti someone else's cow.

We could have some really interesting adventures outside the confines of the law without really doing anything bad...

Hey, KG - since you need to know... my last day at work is the 22nd. Leaving here on the 23rd, stopping by my Mom's for one more cry-fest and then off towards Cleveland, OH. Picking Kit up that night at the Cleveland Airport and seeing the city the next day for a bit. Then heading straight across to WI to see her folks and friends and Dar. We should be pulling into CA on Friday, 30th. Maybe sooner depending on how the weather and roads are. We can't visit certain places along the way if they aren't accessible. :( It seems we've been invited to stay with some people in Cheyenne, WY along the way and I definitely want to spend some time in Reno, NV.
Yes, I will be bringing my laptop along on the trip so we will be online in the evenings from our hotel rooms if we aren't otherwise occupied or just plain dead. During the day, we will be in contact with people by cell phone. If anyone wants to be able talk to us along the way, PM me or Kit and we'll exchange info.
As for the moving, I have gotten a semi truck to haul my stuff. I'm not taking that much along so I will be using just a portion of the trailer. They put up a bulkhead behind my stuff and let someone else use the rest of it. So, we all share the expense. It should be in OR one day after me. I just get to pack some essentials like clothes, bikes and my companion in the Jeep and go. No driving a huge truck across the country and it's so much cheaper this way.

CWR - I have extra $$ set back just in case ;)

Kit - I didn't say we'd *mumble, mumble*. I said we'd talk about it later if and when the opportunity arose. Oh, and thanks for the heads up on the cow graffiti thing. I guess I'll just pack my cans of paint in the truck instead. (are sharpies ok tho? i like to connect the dots. :p) *considers taking off socks right here and now to see what happens... cuz I live on the edge baby! :D *

Towing laws.

Can't tow an unoccupied vehicle with another vehicle, because the in-tow won't have braking or steering and at higher speeds that could be a very bad problem.

Most folks call a tow truck these days, so that law is probably getting out of date. (us old folks remember the days of towing a friend's car with a rope. Man, talk about dangerous for everyone in the vicinity!)

Edit to add that tow bars (the kind pulling cars behind RV's) are a different kettle of fish as they control the in-tow.

i think its in phoenix, where if your doing this you can be pulled over and ticketed. the person in the vehicle being towed can be ticketed for tail gaiting and the tower gets a ticket also, but i don't remember what exactly its for. i think endangerment or illegal towing or something of the like.

This is just a hair beside the point, but I always loved how my grandma complained great uncle would drive his station wagon like he drove his team back in the day. "He slows down WAAAAY before the stops! It takes him forever to get going! I'm surprised he doesn't try to FEED it!!!"
He ran with it, too... clicked his tongue when hitting the gas when he knew my sis and I would catch it... :) Great old folks. Made me painfully nostalgic at that age, for the Fremont my parents grew up in, with the clamshell button factory on the Wolf River (which is now the Bridge Bar) ... old Hwy 10 made by the local crews, horse teams and kids (Uncle Alvin was one of those on the crews)... nights of beer and the hand-made instrument band by the old Hotel (which is still standing) with all the 1st gen german folks sharing their oldworld music and homemade pilsners, banjos and washtub bass... dusty roads and whippoorwills in the trees lining the fields... *murmurs on*
*drifts off into the '30s for awhile...*

Don't worry, everyone, I'll make sure we behave. No promises on *how* we'll behave, but we'll certainly behave in a manner best fitting us. ;) I have nothing against women behaving badly. :D

BTW, X, you would have laughed so hard if you saw the package job my BF did with his stuff. He only bought one roll of packing tape, so 75 percent of the boxes were not sealed, so you had to hold them on the bottom so they didn't open and they were overflowing at the top. Then he ran out of boxes so he did the old throw-it-in-a-garbage-bag thing then ask yourself 20 times which bags are trash and which are stuff.

Not that I'm making fun of him at all. I wouldn't do something like that.

Who knows if this guy is going to hit every pothole from here to OR just because he can. Each wine glass, each candleholder... everything wrapped separately and padded well. Now, I just have to figure out how to box a band saw, a scroll saw, my sanders and other misc woodworking tools. Then there's gram's rocking chair that I haven't refinished the whole way yet and the canoe coffeetable with the oars endtable... Arrrrgh! The computer desk is getting dismantled tonight I hope. how... deep.

I finally found a song that feels like my theme song for right now... www.myspace.com/symphonyofme- click on "The Afterlife" Hope you have good speakers or headphones tho... the bass is very deep in some places... best played at mid-volume- loud enough to hear all the 'flavors' but soft enough to still get the subtlety.

The DJ is actually a friend of mine... Great guy. One of the million geminis in the world that has the II on the back of his neck (fair, though, because pple should always warn others that they're Geminis...) and incredibly talented... mmmm good song.

This story (http://www.dagbladet.no/nyheter/2007/03/14/494986.html in Norwegian and too long to translate, but you can see the pictures) is about Taylor (left), the Aussie shepherd, who woke up his Mom (right) and wouldn't let her go back to bed until she'd checked the front door. There she found a confused elderly lady who'd been walking for miles, in her stocking feet, with an ambulator. It was well below freezing outside and the woman was thin clad with bleeding feet, so she'd have died by morning if Taylor hadn't woken up his Mom for the rescue.

I'm going to the doctor this morning for my regular check up. I finally get brave and call the new doc I picked from my HMO/PPO -- damn if she isn't out on maternity leave! So I'm seeing her substitute.

Later I'm going to see my friend BobS for a massage - super deep tissue. I've got knots in my shoulders and back that I should name, they've been there so long.

Most important - my Sidi shoes have arrived at REI! I'll pick them up after the doc appointment.

I'm wondering if I made a mistake changing doctors. My "physical" consisted of him asking questions while looking at my paperwork, then giving me a referral for some blood work. ooooookaaaay... There was a nurse that weighed me, took my temperature and blood pressure. Hell, I never even got to put on the lovely paper gown. For this I shaved my legs? DoW, my computer is not set up right, so I couldn't watch the video, but loved the story. Dogs are amazing.

BMo3, so far they've never weighed me. Maybe I'm not sick enough.

I saw my specialist today and am trying entocort, the mildest of the steroid drugs for Crohn's. The scope did not find anything, but the other test indicated that the problem is in an area beyond the reach of the scope.

I had two good energy days this week, and today was pretty low. I will try to lift weights, slowly and not very much again tonight to see if I can work through this fatigue. I also note that the times that I have enjoyed a half glass of wine, which is forbidden on the diet, the following day is a good day. Wine, anyone?

Several studies have said a glass of wine a day is good for your heart and helps prevent problems from over-active inflammation responses.

Too bad beer doesn't get the go-ahead...

Thanks for the votes of confidence Knot and BMo3! Alcohol was one of the foods I tested as sensitive to, according to the naturopathic testing, so I am supposed to avoid it as carefully as wheat, corn, dairy and sugar (and all those other things).

I saw my specialist today and am trying entocort, the mildest of the steroid drugs for Crohn's. The scope did not find anything, but the other test indicated that the problem is in an area beyond the reach of the scope.

That seems a bit odd. Supposedly entocort only works in the "end zone" so to speak, hence the name. Supposedly it is not systemic (i.e. does not get taken up in the blood stream and thereby have effects throughout the body). So if it only works locally towards the end of the intestinal tract, then that would be an area within scope reach, right? Then again, entocort actually does get taken up systemically, in spite of what they say. That's why I got those days of suddenly feeling knocked-out-exhausted as I was taken off entocort step by step from 3 to 2 to 1 to 1/2 to no pills a day, several weeks per step. So I guess if it's systemic after all, it can work anywhere in the system ...?

I had two good energy days this week, and today was pretty low. I will try to lift weights, slowly and not very much again tonight to see if I can work through this fatigue. I also note that the times that I have enjoyed a half glass of wine, which is forbidden on the diet, the following day is a good day. Wine, anyone?

What I used to find with wine is that, due to the vasodilation effect (alcohol makes your blood vessels widen), internal bleeding so slight that I wasn't aware of it would suddenly become a flood of rectal bleeding after I'd had a glass of wine. Like that one night in a hotel in Stockholm when I woke up in a pool of blood in their once-clean white sheets. I did my best to rinse them out in the bath, and left a generous tip when I checked out, but I still don't dare book a room at THAT hotel again. Still, the dinner was delicious, including the wine. It was shortly after that trip that I worked out what was happening -- not an allergy to wine, but simply a widening of the arteries. Now that I have an ileostomy, and also now that the inflammation is pretty much under control, I can again drink a glass of wine now and then without any obvious ill effects. But since my recent blood test results indicate that I do have some internal bleeding going on, I haven't been indulging much lately. Gotta get my hemoglobin levels up first.

Aaaaanyhooo -- I'm very glad to hear that you're one of us bloomingly healthy Crohnies, rather than a typical pale and skinny one (like I was for a time, but not now). The cramps can still be, literally, a pain. But let's hope the doc is right that your Crohns is slight, limited, whatever. And let's hope (s)he gets even that under control. As you say:
Hugs and butterflies :)

Hey Knot! I hope you have a no-gluten beer in your hand. I'm feeling very alone with my 3rd glass of wine. :)

U-brew chardonnay semillon. Cheaper and dependable.

We just went to walmart and got hair colour. DH is gonna make me blonde again!

Hey, we're going to Kelowna tomorrow. Are you doing anything?

LBTC - we have lots of ubrew here. Merlot, c=Cab Sauv, Gewurtz, and white merlot. Yum!

Tomorrow - must buy lingerie and honeymoon basket treats. Not sure what else. We've been biking for 3 out of 4 days this week so will probably not bike tomorrow. Then again, the little guy is going up to Big White with his Dad tomorrow so if the weather's nice, who knows? What are you doing in Kelowna?

LBTC
03-15-2007, 09:10 PM
Probably just window shopping. DH and I have the day off - a rarity. And, yes, if we didn't work all day we might have gotten the bikes out....

Sounds like you have a big day ahead of you. We won't have our bikes tomorrow, but I hear we'll have rain anyway. Could be fun to meet to just say hi! :o Course, we'll be there again, I'm sure, and not so close to such a life changing event! We can wait! :)

We've tried a couple of other u-brew varieties, but stick with the c-s because we like it so much.

Time to get blonde!

My BF has told me he typically dates blondes. (I'm naturally brunette and have it died a tad darker than my natural color.) I told him I would lighten it a bit in the summer.

OTG, that sounds accomodating of you.
I dyed my hair red only to discover that DH LOVES it and tells everyone I"m a redhead. Now, I still feel like a brunette... and my hair is really grey.

My hair is really a dull steel gray, with some pure white at the temples. I dye it the same mahogany/reddish brown it was in my late 20's and early 30's.

Knot, i never would have guessed that your hair and mine are the same color (sans dye that is!)

My hair is naturally a very ashen brown... was 'dirty blonde' when I was a kid... used to go red when I bleached it, but it doesn't seem to feel like it anymore. So I force the issue with Henna.

Much of my 'real' hair color is actually quite white (premature, of course). But for the public it is a medium brown. But I leave a white streak on the top right side. My right, not yours.

My hair is the original colour. Brown with gold, red, dark brown, and other naturally occuring shades thrown in. I am not fond of it, but I refuse to dye it myself. I tried that once and it went horribly wrong. :o  :o

I was originally light blonde, then I went red for 20 years.
Now I'm natural again, and i love it. It's a medium ash blonde with lots of silver streaked in everywhere. I love the way the silver glitters in the sun!

I once used a natural henna from the health food store, figurde I'd get a nice "natural" look. I must have done something wrong though, because I wound up looking like a carrot on fire.   I felt like Ronald MacDonald. I had to cover my head and rush to the drugstore to find an emergency coverup dye! :D  :D

Uh oh. I didn't wear any green. Good thing nobody here knows about pinching. And as for a traditional Irish meal ... I had lamb khorma, peshawari nan, and an Indian lemonade that I don't remember the name of (basically like US-style lemonade, with the addition of a pinch of salt).

Well, one of us is trying to keep tradition - I'm making Irish Stew or sorts. With beef instead of lamb, lots of taters, carrots and parsnips, and a can of Guinness. It smells wonderfull in the kitchen right now.

I used to do kind of an auburn color, with blond streaks. One streaking session I over did the bleach, and ended up with Billy Idol white hair all over. So, I run to the store, buy a box of red, thinking it will tone everything down. Uh huh. Can you say "Lucy, I'm home!" Ran back to the store and got a box of light brown - the end result was quite nice. I'm so glad my hair survived!

Now I'm a light to medium brown, depending on which box I pick  . I do have a bottle of Red mousse stuff I keep meaning to try. I thought maybe I'd streak my bangs with it.

Help! I'm stupid!!

Today on Garrison Keillor's Prarie Home Companion there was this wonderful guitar instrumental that I think was called "Lucky Thirteen" played (maybe) by Jen Larson. I can't find a downloadable version anywhere! AAAAG!

How do I find this? I went thru the NPR and Prarie websites and thru iTunes, but had no luck.

Yup, found the myspace page already. Can't find the one instrumental song, though. The title was "Lucky 13" but it doesn't sound like any version of Lucky 13 I am able to find. Not sure it was Jen Larson. May have been someone else. grrrrrr.

Here 'tis. I used parsnips instead of turnips, Safeway had no turnips! I swear, the Guinness went in the stew. :p

Vegetable-Beef Stew

From Cooking Light
We enjoyed this hearty stew with beef, but cubed leg of lamb would work, as well. For robust Irish flavor, use Guinness Stout or another stout for the beer that's specified in the recipe.

2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 pound beef stew meat
1 (14-ounce) can low-salt beef broth
1 (12-ounce) bottle beer
1 1/2 cups cubed peeled baking potato
1 cup (1/2-inch) cubed peeled turnips (about 2 medium)
1 cup thinly sliced leek (about 1 large)
1 cup (1/2-inch-thick) slices carrot
3 thyme sprigs
1 bay leaf
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
Thyme sprigs (optional)

Heat the oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add beef, and cook 5 minutes, browning on all sides. Add beef broth and next 9 ingredients (broth through black pepper), stirring to combine; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 45 minutes or until vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally. Discard bay leaf and thyme sprigs.
Combine 1/4 cup water, flour, lemon juice, and sugar, stirring well with a whisk. Add flour mixture to beef mixture, stirring constantly; bring to a boil. Cook 3 minutes or until slightly thick, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, and stir in parsley. Garnish with thyme sprigs, if desired.

Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 1/2 cups)

amazing that that woman is still alive and even healthy looking

So, I took my DS to Recycled Cycles and helped him buy a new bike
Now I guess his name is Raleighdonson because he bought a tricked out
Raleigh fixie town bike with fenders, steel frame, nice light bike..

it's black. He's thrilled.

I ran into an old friend while I was there, Yes KNottedyet was getting Flossie back complete with brand new stem..
