Knotted- tell us all the details about what you had done to Flossie!!! I want to know!! :p And what kind of new stem??

And Mimi- Wonderful mother thing you did, he must be so thrilled, both with his bike AND his mother! Now, any plan on how to keep the brand new bike from being stolen? :o

I bought him a Kryptonite Mini and had it installed onto the bike; then; I also suggested he use a cable lock with it AND to NOT leave it on campus overnight.

Good enough?

I got my beloved Flossie back!
(and got to see Mimi and meet her charming son and see his new bike)

Flossie's new goodies:

New stem - Nitto Technomic 80mm reach
New headset - threaded Shimano 105
New brake and shifter cables (to fit the new stem)

haven't been able to ride her, though I did adjust the bar rotation, stem rise, and fix the seat height. Won't get to go for a ride until I come back from SF.

I missed my bike! Good to have her back.

BTW: they managed to save her lavender bartape.

Amazing that they saved the bar tape! Is the new stem shorter or longer than the old one? Or is it some other difference instead?

I know what you mean about missing your bike- I was in torture when I had to leave my bike for 3 days to get some spokes replaced...TORTURE i tell you!!

Mimi, hard to tell- I don't know those mini-kryptos and hopefully he will buy a really THICK cable. But the biggest thing I think definitely is not leaving it outside overnight. No way, bring it in every time for the night. Good luck for the Boy & Bike!!

It's more rise and less reach.

(225mm rise total, 80 mm reach)

So I'm more upright.

I'm also pretty exhausted. Working extra hours to cover my day off. I'm beat.

Edit: He is charming! He was parking his truck as I was loading Flossie into my car, and I hollered how I liked his new bike, and he came right up and introduced himself and shook my hand! Very charming nice guy! (Hey, all you single gals... pay attention!)

Hey, ladies!

You all just keep me grinning away! Thank you!

Keep going - you're heading in such great directions!

I'm just happy I had enough energy to make a nice dinner of roast chicken with sauteed veggies & mashed potatoes; and to pay bills. Almost a normal amount of energy, and a pretty minor level of discomfort. Could something be working?

Well, now, I must go pick a picture to send to all my picture recipients. Probably another spring flower. I love this time of year!! :p

Happy evening, morning, packing, working, mothering and everything else you're doing right now!

Hey Snap.

Ok..here's my review if anyone's interested.

Went to Alexander's Steakhouse. Across from TGIF's near Vallco.

Swanky place. Great wait staff.. course maybe they were nice cuz I invited them to taste the wine with us :)

Very interesting place. All the appetizers have Japanese influence. Like we had Hamachi shooters which were good but I think I liked the crab and crackers best.

Great place to go if you want to max out your credit card :) and give your friend's thrifty husband a heart attack.

They've got Beluga caviar on the menu and Japanese Kobe beef. Overall experience was much nicer than Forbes Mill. Just things were better done, menu was more rounded, better wine, more refined but down to earth wait staff.

Hmm.. though.. not sure it beat Boboquivari's in-bone filet though... Didn't think anything else at Bobo's was that great but man.. that filet was good...

However, that souffle was to die for...

San Francisco! (well, ok, east bay)

It is warm and sunny and blue sky and the air smells like spring and eucalyptus. Just standing out on the patio for a few minutes I saw two hummingbirds.

Coffee and pancakes for b'fast. Maybe a field trip to Rivendell or another bike shop after the construction dudes come to estimate how many millions of $$ Trek needs to spend to fix her kitchen.

We made our pilgrimage.

Rivendell Secret: Grant rides a Specialized mtb to work! (we were admiring his bar-bag and another employee told us it was his bike)

To begin at the beginning...

We tried to find their address from the website. Not much luck there, so Trek called them. She was told they don't post the addy so they can keep the "riff raff" away. Like those Mondonico riders. I was given special dispensation because I ride a Waterford, and Waterford makes Riv's "A. Homer Hilson" bike. :D

In my little Riv fantasies, I pictured a weather-beaten barn on some sunny California hillside filled with bikes and bags and wool clothes. A mechanic or two sitting under a tree outside eating lunch. Something bucolic like that.

In reality Riv is in two big garages (with roll up garage doors) in a big industrial building full of garages behind a bakery outlet. We knew we'd found the right place as we saw 10 or so bikes out leaning on walls and the fence and in a rack. One garage is the bike mechanics zone, the other is the show-room. Beautiful bikes and bags and woolly clothes and books and other goodies! We looked around, chatted a bit (they offered to let us ride some bikes), got a catalog, and walked over to a restaurant they recommended for lunch. We read the catalog, discussed what we'd seen, and made plans for some wild and crazy purchases!

Those Salukis sure are nice bikes...
Hah! No, that's not what we bought! I bought a pair of Riv's wonderful MUSA pants (size M fit me, but I got size L as they were more comfortable and were looser in the thighs for biking). I'm not a nylon fan, but these pants are GREAT. They are actually cooler than the cotton capris I was wearing. They do make swish noises as I walk, though. And lemme tell ya what Trek bought! This goddess among women, this paragon of bike-geekitude, this jewel in the crown of TD, she bought a bar bag and GOT ONE FOR ME, TOO!!!! whoa. That's love, baby! http://www.rivbike.com/webalog/baggage_racks/20128.html We have matching canvas ones.

We met an Ibex woolweenie while we were there. I was wearing Ibex, which intrigued one of the guys working there. Another customer came in wearing a polo that looked like Ibex fabric, but I was too distracted by goodies to pay him more attention. The Riv guy spotted the Ibex logo on the customer's polo and hollered. So we had some Ibex bonding at Rivendell.

Now if Riv would make some MUSA pants out of wool...

Popping in for a quick hello. :) As I thought, I shall be spending the day in the rain :( watching a track meet. My DS#1 does the "long" distance events, which makes sense since his true love is Cross Country running. Anyway, in a 6 hour meet, yes, somehow this one is 6 hours , my child will be running for approximately 3.5 minutes, shorter if he PRs.

Last night was a family movie night. We watched Danny Kaye in The Court Jester. The boys went to bed and DH and I foolishly stayed up to watch a second movie. I only say foolishly because I need more sleep then the 5 hours I received. The rain should keep me awake, right? :p We watched a British movie, Kinky Boots, which was based on a real boot company of aforementioned name. I did enjoy it, but did not find it quite as funny as my SIL did who recommened it. I thought the movie had wonderful messages throughout and a great ending.

I hope everyone stays warm and dry today. Wishing everyone a fantastic day! Time to run. :)

Speaking of movies, we saw "On a clear day" the other night about a guy

Mimi, one of the employees told us "That's Grants bike".

What got me about the bag is the front pocket. Yeah, I'm shallow. The blurb in the catalog was something about it being the perfect place for a BART ticket. Light bulb (CFL) goes off over Treks head.

Right now the routine is:

skid to halt at BART
lean bike on booth or another passenger
cuss and curse as get backpack off of back
unzip vest
try to remember which jersey pocket has ticket
find ticket and swipe
reverse previous steps and go in.

then repeat at destination, on the way back ugh.

Just the idea that everything I need for a commute, clean shirt, bike lock....and the ticket is right there.

Sold. :)

Happy Birthday, Margo!!! :D

K&T you'll have to tell us more of your adventure stories! Rivendell sounds fab and the bik bag is perfect! I can totally see it! :)

BM3 we loved Kinky Boots! Of course, I cried, as always. Last night we watched Stranger Than Fiction. It was pretty good, but really nothing compared with Kinky Boots!

Mimi, I haven't seen the movie you mentioned, but I really have a tough time with accents, too. They make me concentrate soooo hard when I watch the movie, but, hey, then I can't fall asleep! :o

Hey, should we start a movie thread? :D

Harris was cool. There was a row of hanging frames, mostly Riv's (Rambroullet, Atlantis, Bleriot). Built bikes included Riv Saluki, Jamis Coda, some Terrys, a Burley Duet tandem. I even saw a Waterford ridden in by a customer.

I spent $370 on parts for the 3-speed.  But it was fun. They had almost everything I needed except a rear rim (40 hole) which they will order and pawl springs for the AW hub (will order) and a replacement stem bolt (he will search the old bikes for one later). I even blew $90 on a new B72L - an exact replacement for the current crumbling saddle. Got new pedals, chain, cog, spokes, grips, tubes, rim tape, seat post, 3-speed pulley. Whoa, just checked my receipt and I paid $1.00 per spoke (72 spokes=$72). No wonder it all cost so much. Well, I did get good service - Elton even shook my hand as I was leaving.

I think spokes were $0.15 each in 1973. What does that make the inflation rate? Only 5.7%.

Say hi to Elton for us! :) Tell him it's hi from Brian Sullivan and Lisa. :) :)

ooops...too late i guess!

We love Harris', it's where we bought our 2 Rambouillets from. Unfortunately it's a 2 1/2 hour drive from our house to get there. That means most of the work on our bikes needs to be done closer to home at another LBS.

The stem bolt was so munged that I had to use vise-grips to remove it. The fork is still bent, though I beat on it some to make the steering tube straighter. So why am I spending money on parts for this bike without straightening or replacing the fork? I've decided to get it back on the road and see how it rides and how much I ride it before I make a decision on doing something about the fork. I'll ask the framebuilder who is building my custom frame for advice and go from there.

Trek ordered a pair of SIDIs from REI today. The real hoot is that they had to be shipped from the one REI store that still had her size... SEATTLE!!!!! :D  :p

Darn, if I'd only known...

(PS: I got to spend the afternoon with her mom. She is just as cute as the pics Trek posted a while back.)

I pretty much do all the cooking when I visit. Tonight we're having jambalaya, Cabernet Sauvignon (47 lb Rooster), and seriously marvelous organic dark chocolate (all from Berkeley Bowl). With the chocolate we have some utterly yummy candied orange peel Trek's mom made. Oooh, they go so well together (and with the wine!)

Think I'll make something with Portobello mushrooms and Vermont cheddar cheese for b'fast tomorrow.

Edit: Trek's dog is completely in love with a big ol' hairball-mat from my dog's tail. She play-bows and barks and wags at it. I don't think there will be any traumatic outcomes when our two dogs finally meet. :p

Then, they broke the chalice from the palace!

Whew, busy day yesterday. We left the house all set for a day in the rain, since it was indeed raining when we left. The sun came up, the humidity rose, and by the middle of the meet it hit 74 degrees and we were all sweating. The meet *was* supposed to be over at 4, but did not end until 7!!!! DS #1 has a sunburn , since I did not think to send him with sunscreen since it *was* pouring and it was forecasted to continue. It did resume raining shortly after we arrived home last night. :p

We came home and DS #3 decided to make a rocky road cheese cake and a strawberry cake. Both are delicious. :D

We enjoyed the delicious desserts and watched Click, which was a good movie. I was quite skeptical and really did not think I would like it, but I found myself laughing and it had a wonderful message about love and family.

Mimi - the first time I fell w/ clipless, I could not stop laughing! Imagine, there I was on the ground, still clipped in both sides and no way in the world I was going to get UN-clipped in that position. Had to get one of my friends to lift the bike a little so I could pedal and get my feet into position to unclip. I still laugh when I think about it. I suppose I could have taken off my shoes and disengaged that way had I been alone, but it worked out. Sure I got a bruise or too, but remember falls at 0mph don't have near the impact as say a 20mph crash. You will fall. You will survive. It's just a rite of passage. Oh, yeah, and I was 54 when that happened.

In the meantime, go out in your neighborhood, and practice stopping at every intersection and unclipping and actually stopping, putting one foot on the ground, and starting again. A few trips around the block like that will really help. Anticipate stops and slow-downs. Esp when riding with a group, don't follow too close, and always be ready to unclip your "unclipping" foot when traveling slowly. Approaching intersections I always unclip one side just in case some traffic of any sort materializes. It will soon be second nature and you'll never go back. Good luck!

Congrats Mimi and good luck! I've had clipless pedals since last July but I still don't use them consistently. I was doing really well, confident, remembering to clip out etc but my bike was new and the derailleur wasn't set up right. I was riding up a fairly steep hill and then chain fell off. I was going too slow to clip out and down I went. Now I am terrified of hills even thoguh I haven't thrown the chain in months. I now ride with one foot clipped in all the time and the other half and half... I am determined to get over that this year.

KG-I like the idea of going 1/2 clipped and 1/2 unclipped, I will try that. On my trainer, being clipped is no big deal :p , but on the road, that is a different story. :o I am going to try your method. Thanks for the tip.

Good luck going clipless KG and Mimi. I hope to be consistently clipless by the end of the summer. :)

BMO - I have to admit that I kept the little "cheater" pedal clips that were on the pedals when I bought the bike. I have taken one off but ot the other. That's how I can ride with it clipped or not. I just flip it over and it's a pedal, flip it back, and it's clipless.

I had a WONDERFUL weekend! My older daughter and her partner came to visit and we all had such a lovely time together. :p :p :p
After they left my wonderful DH agreed to work together and put a new stem on my bike. This time was substancially easier than the last time we did it, and we got everything back together and seems to be working and shifting well. Will know more when I ride it tomorrow, then we can fine-tune if needed, and later retape and twine the bars and shellac the cork again.
I am so lucky to have a clever and patient DH with his own little mini-bike repair shop in the basement! :D

Jen, aren't you lucky to have sons that cook...PLUS, a husband who KNITS!!!
I gave about 12 beautiful skeins of wool to my daughter (who also knits, like me), since I have plenty of wool stashed away, and she scrapes her meager salary together to buy even two skeins when she can. She was pretty happy. :)

Finally a day that would have been mild enough to ride, but all that sand (it adds traction on snow or ice, but once those are melted away it's like somebody dumped ball bearings all over the roads) has me a bit spooked. Still. I'll get RubySlipperz Spring cleaned this week and take her out for a spin. Meanwhile, if I've got this attachment thing worked out right, here are some pretty definitive signs of Spring I saw on today's hike. Luckily for me, they were so busy they didn't really care how close I got with the camera. If they had cared, I'd have been in deep doodoo. I didn't have my allergy kit with me.

Gorgeous flowers Duck! My bulbs are finally starting to blooom, aah spring...

And the real sign of spring? I got out on my road bike for the first ride of the year! Yeah baby, does that thing fly compared to my mt bike...

Knotrek - yum. I want you to come cook for me someday.....

Lisa - glad you had a great visit with your daughter. I enjoy giving my "poor" kids stuff too. It feels good. :)

And yes, I do feel different. I changed my email addies and my class webpage with my new name today! Weird! (It's particularly amusing actually, because dh's previous wife and I have the same first name. And I knew her way back when. So when I hear my new name, I think of her.) I don't think it will take long until it feels like me though.  :D

I posted some honeymoon scenery pics on OT:A if anyone's interested.

KG-or should I say the new Mrs. D, congratulations again and your scenery pictures were a delight to look at. :)

Knot-the lunch you had yesterday sounds divine. Oh, I just noticed you should be at the airport. :( Wishing you safe travels!

Lisa- I am so happy your weekend was an enjoyable on. It sounds as though you had a brilliant time. If your daughter ever lacks any wool, just let me know. :) Thank you, I think my family is fairly wonderful. :)

DoW-Beautiful flowers. Spring had skipped us. :( We went from an extremely mild winter to hot, humid and hazy summer. It is again forecasted to be 80*F.

Good morning All!

K&T - glad you had such a fantastic weekend! And, yes, I would love for you to cook for me any time! :D

Duck - I love seeing the bees in the flowers! Great photo you got there! Isn't spring the best?

Mimi - congrats! You will get used to the pedals and will have more power!

Yesterday we did a very nice ride in the park. Three women taking it easy - one in serious training on an easy training day, J & I just getting back to riding....it was great! Of course I have no idea how anyone gets anything done when the biking starts again!! We have so much yard work to do and just did the basics, we didn't manage to clean the house at all, did not get enough laundry done, didn't give 'Cuda's foot the soakings it needed....boy I'm glad it's riding season again! :p

Back in Seattle again... (sing it, everyone!)

Slept some on the plane, got coffee in the airport, ate a Larabar while stuck in traffic on the freeway.

Got about 10 minutes before I have to go to work.

I did manage to cook b'fast this morning after all, just scrambled eggs and cheese. Nothing exciting. And we ate as fast as we could so we could get me to the airport on time.

I don't feel like going to work. I wanna take a nap, then go for a ride on Flossie with her new stem and headset and GORGEOUS Rivendell barbag from Trek.

Trek, what work are you going to have done to your kitchen?

Here's hoping it does NOT become a Salsa-like saga. :o   I don't think it'll be too bad.

When I moved out from my Ex-DPITA in I found perhaps the last semi-affordable condo in a semi acceptable neighborhood in the Bay Area. The huge blended family I bought from is likely passed of heart disease, they fried EVERYTHING  and painted nothing. I felt sorry for them but since my mutt and I needed a place to live...not sorry enough to say "psst, if you'd move out, clean the clutter and crushed velvet paintings, paint the joint and at least reface the cabinets you'd get much much more."

They had an awful realtor who'd put it on the market, didn't sell, lowered the price, on the market again, didn't sell, dropped the price and so on till I came around and said "hmmm, dirty, greasy, dingy, needs paint, new floors and drawers .... but....potential".

I just refinanced which lowered my mortgage from   :( to more like just  , got a small equity loan...let's see what Trek can do. It's time to nest. Place looks like I went through a break up, loss of a parent, then trained to do back to back AIDS Rides ... cause I did.

Oh, and I've been through this before so it's not the first remodel but Spazzdog!! I'll need design help.

Thanks for asking, mom! :p I am on day 11 of pretty darned good energy, considering. Perhaps the new drug is helping already. Blood tests all returned normal results, so there is no direct explanation for the terribly low energy I was in. I'm just so glad to feel like me again! And, boy! Do I ever have a lot of stuff to do at home and at work and in the yard and on the bike, etc, to catch up from that month long drag!

Trek - we'd love to see the pics of the kitchen. We have one more thing to do in ours before I'm ready to take some pics and post them. We're not doing the whole redo as we simply can't afford it, but the paint and light fixtures have made a dramatic difference!!

Thanks Spazz, you have an incredible eye.

I started with a little "curb appeal". Gardening's fun and with luck it can add some privacy. This is what my neighbors and most units look like, agapanthus, ivy over and over. Bleah. The good thing is there's a lot of green space, the bad thing is in front of each unit the same boring plants.

Trek420
03-26-2007, 07:27 PM
...and this is mine next door.

It's overcast today but you can get the idea. Took the boring ivy out and agapanthus which is just a home for snails.

So far I've planted azalea, abutalon, pineapple sage, yarrow, wooly lambs ear, miniature roses, nasturtiums as ground cover, the lavender is happiest of all there...the idea is more privacy for me, get the whole shebang lining the front walkway. The birds like it and who knows it could ad curb appeal.

Those of us who live in Microsoftland know to NEVER, NEVER, NEVER get new MS software. We always wait at least a year, better two, so they can get rid of all the bugs---excuse me, I mean "features"---that they didn't bother with in their rush to market it.

You'll find the new Macs (I have an iBook G4) just as intuitive and simple as the old ones. When we got our iBook, all we had to do was turn it on and we were up and running!

When I call Mac tech support I don't think I've ever been on hold more than maybe a minute, and I've only had to call them twice in over a year.

I do recommend getting "The Missing Manual" by David Pogue. Excellent book for the Mac.

Either click the "delete all button" or just delete the ones you don't want.

You can set your cookie preferences to only accept cookies from websites you navigate to. Like TE. I just deleted ALL my cookies to see how it worked. It kicked me off TE and made a bit of a mess. I won't do that again, I'll just delete the cookies I don't want individually.

Hmm...

I agree. I'd never buy MS OS within two years of its release. Took me years to upgrade to XP from 98. Wanted to let all the Win2k, Millenium, NT stuff settle before I settled on an OS that looked it was going to be the staple.

Mimi -- I'm sort a with you but as someone who once worked at Apple and then went into PC nerdland.. I'm agnostic. I think it's cool that the new Mac OS is now commandline capable and so the "under the covers" stuff is open for those who want to be geeks but it's still the same ole friendly Mac to those that don't give a hoot. Pretty cool balance.

Still agnostic though I do have a soft spot for Macs.

I can relate (only I am not very computer literate) and my dad calls me about his PC problems. :( Repeatedly I tell him, dad, I use MACS. Yet he calls me, not my Brother and SIL who use PCs. That would make sense. Ah another glorious gloomy day in the valley. At least the rain brought the temps down from 80. It is only supposed to reach a chilly 64. Still above average, yet so much better than the 78-80 weather we have been having.

I have cleaned, exercised, showered, made the French dessert for Twin A's (aka DS#2) French class, and I am about to sit down and enjoy a snack and read a book.

I hope everyone has a relaxing day, :)

My grandmother got a new computer a couple of years ago. The second day she called me up in a panic. "Susie, the screen went black!"

"Did you try moving the mouse?"

"Oh." (It was the screen saver.)

Then she discovered the games. She played hearts a lot. One day she called up and said, "I don't really know the rules, but I must be getting pretty good because I always take all the hearts and I always have the highest score." *drum goes da dum dum*

Hi, bikemom! I'm here, at least for a check-in.

It's house cleaning day, and the weather is nice - we have a yard full of overgrowth to tame!! And, if we get enough of the chores done, we should be able to go for a ride. yay!

DH seems to have a bit of a cold, though, so we'll see what we can do....

next up - weigh in.

I bet you have some great indoor stuff you'll get done today! Make the most of it,

I'm here BMo3. But I'm about to head out. Have to drop my truck off at the garage and DH and I will go for a ride while it's being fixed. It's raining here too but only lightly and it's not raining in The Dalles where we have to take our truck. So we'll be riding in the desert again today.:)

I'll be checking in later.

It does feel like the halls are empty and there's an echo in here.

I went for a ride by myself this morning, after DH and I had breakfast in town. Beautiful sunny day, but only in the upper 40's now.
Now I'm working on my bike...pushed the seat back a 1/2 inch, and have been retaping & twining the bars and am now applying 3 coats of amber shellac on the cork tape. Eating some good French cheese between shellac coats drying... :) :)

Already planned out what my two placards will say: "I love my Navy family" (got a lot of family in the Navy) and "Our vets need better medical care" (cuz they do!!!)

Yep. Like BMO3, I'm a big fan of GOOD cheese (note: does not include anything called "cheese food") ;) DH likes good cheese too, but he doesn't like the stronger or stinkier types- but oooh I like them ALL! We made a special trip to a gourmet cheese shop owned by a real Frenchman last month- he imports special cheeses and you can of course taste them before buying. TOO WONDERFUL! Afterwards, we make our special cheeses last a while, eating little portions every day like treats... :p

Making a big ol' crock pot of vicchysoisse.

Now I want the CHEESE and wine to go with it!!!

Oooh, a nice stinky cheese to offset the onion and potato... a robust smooth red wine to go with the cheese (and to sip with dark chocolate for dessert)

Or maybe a delicate crumbly farmer's cheese with a dry white wine, and pears for dessert?

Or neither, since I have no $$ and don't get paid until Monday. Poo.

DH is an all cheese kind. Strong, stinky, whatever. I am not a cheese person. Except Queso.

Vicchysoisse was a spelling word of mine in 4th grade. My fabulous teacher liked to sneak words in like that, gosh she was amazing.

Though it will probably be 2-3 months after that before I can hike in them. After the boot fitting dh and I did a hike up a small mountain with nice views. Then we went to REI and spent some dividend money to get our 20% off. I got Crocs shoes with instep and heel straps that should work for stream crossings, and he got winter boots.

I'm thinking about getting my coaching certification and starting up a multisport coaching co. Maybe Knott and I could hook something up so that we include nutritional services etc.

Better yet!! I could run a triathlete retreat/camp out here in the lovely Columbia River Gorge, Knott could teach core classes and do all the cooking in my new house with my new 36" range/stove complete with indoor grill.

Salsa,
Are the renovations near completion or completed on your house? I need an update. I miss the progress photos, especially your fantastic ability to pick colours.

Hi, you guys! I just finished and emailed in a preliminary report with a dreadful deadline, so can now lift my head out of the morass of papers and spreadsheets and actually do something ELSE. Sheesh.

The house is DONE. That just happened last week. We still have a ton of stuff to do. Our bed, dressers and bed tables are in the new master bedroom, and our horrible old couch is in the living room, so we are OUT of the basement dungeon. But we still have to get everything out of the basement so they can drywall the ceiling and replace the carpets they ruined in their flood. So I think the moving back in process will be quite slow. Key things we still have to do, soon: get window coverings; get new couch(es); get the relandscaping done.

We did end up sponge-painting the living room to try and match that sort of goldy-orange color from the ochre-mining village in Provence. It's more red-orange than gold-orange, but we still like it, and more to the point, have no desire to do it all again just now! I will post pics as soon as I can get them from Chris.

Now to pay for it. Holy ****! It cost a huge amount, with about an $80,000 overrun. About half of that were upgrades we requested, the other half just the builder's poor initial estimates re time. Bleah. It really is nice, though, and I have no doubt about the quality of the work.

In other news---Mom rehospitalized for two days last week with congestive heart failure and maybe a TIA. Now seems fully recovered, discharged back to assisted living on Saturday. I am trying to find an assisted living place out here to move her to this summer, and am going to see one later this week.

Work has been pretty stressful all winter. Because of this recent consulting project, I have not been on my single bike for five weeks, and have only had two or three 30-mile tandem rides during that time. I hope to start fixing that this week, when I have a little time off. Although have to spend most of it on house stuff.

Thanks for asking! I feel like I've been buried in everything for several months, and am just now coming up for air.

That reminds me of an old "Sylvia" cartoon of uses for a worn-out certain birthcontrol object. It could be reused as a waterproof yalmuke for cats...

Well, the tree is down. In the process of trying to put the tree back into the hall closet I managed to create an avalanche of the contents thereof, and found that the tent and camp stove I thought had been left in exDPITA's basement were, in fact, residing peacefully in the depths of my hall closet.

Happiness for the fate of those two things, but still morose about several others which I *know* are in ex's sphere of influence.

Must "leave it" and "move on".

My little baby rode an adult sized bike!
Granted it was only 10 minutes, and it was around the school track, but he did it!! I let him decide when we would go home, because I didn't want to push him and have him give up on biking again.

As we walked home he said he felt really good and liked riding!

So, now I hope I can get him to ride around the track a little bit each evening as I either walk or run around. Slowly but steadily... He did say that biking was one of "his" sports, so even though he's a reluctant rider he thinks of himself as a cyclist.

Awww, I'm so happy!

(BTW: I thought I'd have to lower the saddle, but he could sit and touch the ground flat-footed! The kid has longer legs than me already! He didn't want me to raise the seat, that's fine. I just want him to ride and if he wants to touch the ground for now, that's fine.)

And there I was not riding my bike thinking I'd get more rest! haha

Hey LBTC. I was thinking of you today while I was running. Millions of little orange and black butterfies on the trail. It almost made me afraid to step forward because I didn't want to squish any of them. But the happily weaved and bobbed out of my way and settled back onto the little puddles they were drinking from after I went through.

Is your belly sore from your ride yesterday, from all the work in the yard or from your ride today?

Take care of yourself. I'm glad you're feeling better but take it slowly.

I need to find a photo for you from China. It's a picture of some really cool outdoor furniture that I think you'll get a kick out of. I'll post it when I can figure out how to resize etc.

Wahine, I think the ride yesterday started it, and the digging in the yard probably made it a bit worse. Biggest difference is that during the yard work there were no twinges or warning signs, just after long enough bent over I would just feel uncomfortable, so I'd give it a rest, go do something else and get back to it....lots of rest breaks but at least two neighbours commented on how much yard work I was getting done!! :D After all that, it's not a lot more sore than after a day of work, so I'm counting my blessings and hoping I haven't damaged my energy too....

KG - I actually remembered to sunscreen my nose....! I hate that little pink nose I get all summer every summer! And now, the moment of truth, about to jump in the shower and see where the tan lines are!

DH is nursing a pulled shoulder muscle today, and I made us coffee and oatmeal this morning. (he usually makes the morning coffee). Eating Easter M&M's at the moment.

Taking a day off from riding today and pretty much working all day today except for periodically checking email and TE (because I can).
Gonna make shrimp over wild rice w/streamed local spinach and pea shoots tonight. :p
Got some ham hocks defrosting to slow cook with molasses beans later in the week...

Mimi, this made me smile. If I do not have my meals planned out in advance, I do the exact same thing. I come out of the grocery with nothing but toliet paper.

Tonight we are having hormone free flank steak-marinated and broiled, over steamed brown rice with steamed organic snow pea pods.

I do enjoy shopping at Trader Joe's! :D

Lots of times DH and I will just fend for ourselves for dinner, or I'll just make boring spaghetti. Or I'll throw together a crockpot soup in the morning from whatever i have around. Sometimes we'll even have scrambled eggs or buttermilk pancakes for dinner.

But when I see special stuff in the supermarket that looks good, I'll buy a couple packs and put one in the freezer. Like good ham hocks that don't show up too often...nice fresh shrimp...some chicken breasts...italian sausage...pork chops...organic bacon....or local lamb chops from a little farm we bike past a lot and wave to the lambs. These special meat things I'll tuck in 2-person dinner portion ziplocks into the freezer and so I usually have a stash at hand. Because the portions are not huge, they defrost quickly for use. I actually make a separate trip to the local food farm store for the local bacon and lamb chops and organic salmon, and I buy a bunch and freeze some stuff too.

Then I always keep "base" stuff in stock in the kitchen that I use often- different kinds of rice, noodles, penne, mushrooms, tabouli, onions, beans, peppers, potatos, etc.

So with all those things on hand, when I find some wonderful fresh greens or good veggies and fruit at the markets, I can take some home and invent a meal around it from my base items and freezer treats. Theres always "something" with good potential lurking in the shelves and fridge somewhere...

I was just thinking about dinner and deciding that I'm going to do another food experiment and make something with tomatoes. I've been missing tomato sauces since the diet restrictions.....we'll see how I do.

According to the discomfort today, I did overdo it this weekend. I did not eat forbidden food, so I think this is primarily muscular. I promise to walk slowly and gently on my lunch break today. And here it is - lunch time!

Cheerio!

I ate too much easter candy.

I feel yucky.

But my taxes are done, and I got SKnot a new pair of shoes. (Brooks Beasts) The kid is a men's size 11!!!!! The shoes he was wearing were men's size 8!!!! He grew 3 sizes in just a couple months!

Oh, deary me!

Next on the shopping list: getting him some Chacos. We'll wait on those until it's warmer and his feet have grown some more. Hopefully Sierra Trading Post will still have them on clearance by then.

Bikingmomof3

I just bought my oldest another pair of Brooks Addiction, size 11. He goes through about 4 sets of running shoes a year. Dang those things are not cheap.

KnottedYet
04-09-2007, 04:12 PM
We have a Brooks outlet about 15 miles from me. (Brooks was based here in Bothell, WA. Now that Adidas owns them I don't know how much connection they still have with Bothell, but they've still got an outlet store!)

Beasts for $80, Addictions for $70. Not as cheap as you can sometimes find on Sierra Trading Post or buying them through a PT clinic (50% off if the clinic participates in the Brooks professional program), but worth it to get the right shoes right now!

I can't believe how much feet grow! And how fast! And how TALL SKnot suddenly got! He's as tall as me now! I swear last month he was still shorter than me!

when my older son was that age (the one you met with a beard)
He sat and whined one day that he couldn't put on his shoes. we thought he was just being obnoxious...and argued with him. but he was serious. His feet had grown.. we took him to the shoestore barefoot. :)
But it wasn't 3 sizes, it was 1 1/2 or 2.

I took SKnot to the shoestore in a pair of my Chaco sandals, with his toes hanging off the ends!

I was trying to get him to put on clean socks, and he complained that the socks hurt his feet. YUP, he'd outgrown a pair of SOCKS!!! He hasn't outgrown socks in years! Now I gotta weed out all the size medium socks he still has, and start buying him more large socks.

Ian & I went to the Shenton park dog refuge on saturday & spent two hours looking & pondering our thoughts.

Does anyone have a foxhoud? There's one that noone seems to want.:( We wouldn't be able to take it mtn biking as who knows what she'll find.

There's also a very nice kelpie cross that we discussed with the staff. They have all our details & he'll speak to the trainer to see if we're suited for the dog. We need a doggie door! We met the dog but it seemed more interested in smelling the exercise yard for doggie smells.

There was a greyhound as well & am more than happy to have one however it would get a bit lonely when the other dog would come mtn biking with us.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. We don't want a small fluffy dog

Perhaps i should start a dogggggggg thread.

HEy, stop feeding your kids & you won't have the problem of them growing.. Ikid Ikid

I need a bit more rain & perhaps i can grow taller. It's not worked yet though :(

I made buffalo burgers for dinner tonight. (I don't eat beef)
They were good! Pretty much like beef, but leaner and, I thought, tastier! I mixed the patties up with some chopped onion and seasonings before I cooked them. I liked that they were non-hormone, all-vegetarian fed bison.

Had a beautiful 19 mile ride this morning. Last month I saw a dead deer at a certain spot next to the road, today I saw it was now a perfect white bleached skeleton, like in those "parched desert" cartoons.

My white narcissus are blooming like mad right now and perfuming up the place.

News:

SSIL has finally (after 6 weeks(!)) given us the number she wants to buy her share out on the investment house. We are only(!) $13,000 apart now. We're investigating our options now, and are seriously not in a big hurry to get back to her, since she wasn't. heh. Her lawyer sure loves to make threats, though. heehee. I'm glad we have a bigger, more professional, more serious, non-ambulance chaser lawyer. :)

DH is making an omelette with the leftover roast chicken and veggies. yummy

Oh, and RMT appointment. I've shifted from ice pack, to magic bean bag. I'm going to take my little bag to work and keep it in the freezer there, too. That RMT, she's really smart!

Well, off to do some more serious resting.

Well I have begun a cacti garden indoors. So far I have 5 plants and I just may need to pick up a few more today. They are so cute and seem like a growing plant that will be difficult even for me to kill. :o Tonight I shall be repotting them.

It is unbelieveably hot and humid here, more like summer than spring. :( So I am staying indoors as much as I can. I do however have a lovely suntan. and I am finally at the weight I wanted to be, yay me. :D Now I need to learn how not to lose or gain more, but maintain. It is always something. I am in desperate need of smaller clothing, but the only thing I will spring for is a new speedo. My old one is flashing my neighbours and even they are noticing and commenting-side note, they are a lovely gay couple in their late 40s-they crack me up with their comments. :D

zen - I have to agree with BikingMom - does anything on those rollers at 7 11 actually deserve the name food?
