Ha! Except we have a slight distribution problem! I can try scanning it...

It's funny - this place has a whole wall of different chocolate bars, and instructions on how to fully appreciate the chocolate: "break it - listen for the clear 'snap'; rub it with your thumb to release the flavor, notice the hint of almonds, curry and sea salt", etc.

What's the address?

Ahh yes - popcorn and wine... a guilty secret! Although last night I actually cooked a yummy dinner of hot Italian sausage (chicken), brocolli rabe with garlic, and pasta - all mixed together - yum - and a glass (ok, a glass and half!) of 1997 Matanzas Creek cab. It was a "break-up" bottle from my housemate's ex-boyfriend and she just wanted to get rid of it... not your typical Tuesday night wine!

How's about we gals show up after a ride, hand the note accross the counter to the clerk "give me the chocolate and no one gets hurt" ;)

Mr. Fish is jittery from the dexamethasone shot he got from the doc because he reacted in a nasty, rashy, blistery way to cutting a fig tree down. He's finally over the jitters and is super sleepy.

Job application is in!!! Now the waiting begins.

I like popcorn and chocolate. For special occasions I make popcorn covered in dark chocolate and white chocolate. Yummmmmmm.

I thought popcorn was supposed to combine well with champagne/sparkling wine.

Another combination I like is any red/pretzels.

I heard, if you are worried about calories, and want wine and cheese and crackers, leave out the crackers!

I saw my neighbor out in the yard, so I brought KoKo and Buttercup over to introduce them, and to explain that, if he saw me, apparently sitting out in the middle of the (5 acre) yard, drinking wine, every everning, that I was actually taking the small torts, which he wouldn't be able to see, out to graze. He says "Well, that wouldn't seem strange to me, anyway."

Great movie combo- popcorn and Snowcaps!!

My daughter actually has two children. She got pregnant when she was 18 and did not keep the baby, but hand-picked adoptive parents who bring him to visit her and all up North relatives frequently, even though they live in Illinois and she is in Minnesota. Then, a couple years ago, she calls me to say "Mom, I'm getting married!" I say "Why, are you pregnant?" She says "Yes, but that's not why!" Married in June, baby in August (during Hurricane Charlie, the first of THREE that year). I got to go up to see him, and meet my son-in-law, who is absolutely PERFECT- I love Kelly dearly, of course, but I don't know how she scored such a wonderful husband...He continues to be perfect and they continue to be a blissful little family two years later, having recently purchased their first home for $5000 (!!!!!!!!??????????)

I gave a man with a sob story about $7 last night, when I was in the parking lot, alone, waiting for the ride to begin. He said it was for a hose in his girlfriend's car, but I wonder if it was for alcohol...He seemed so grateful and sincere and God Bless You...I told him to just pass on the kindness when he gets the chance. I NEVER give money to people. My punishment was not eating dinner with the group.

I just look at it as entertainment tax. If they tell me a good story, I give them some money. People who really would need money for this or that would seriously be way too embarrassed to ever ask a stranger for it. IMHO.

Cool about your son-in-law. I hope that folks will soon be saying, "I have no idea how Lise scored such a great guy, but she did!" :p

I have a conference in San Francisco in September (if I'm still working with catfish). I'm going to have to try to find this place!

My replacement tubes FINALLY arrived yesterday. I had too much other stuff going on when I got home, so I couldn't try the tire change. It was raining anyway. Ugh! Nanci - how's your bent friend?

Nanci
06-01-2006, 10:31 AM
I haven't made it to the post office...I will, though, I promise.

My bent friend is home. Apparently, after you have a seizure, you are not supposed to drive for six months, or you have to be evaluated by a neurologist, or something. The neurologist put him on anti-seizure meds, which makes no sense to me. It's not like he was having seizures before getting bent, so there's no reason why he would now. That's be like, your kid has a high temp, and has a seizure, so they put him on anti-seizure medication. When there's a one-time clearly explanable reason for it- whats the point?

Got my acting-up car stereo looked at and hopefully fixed today. Got a real connection for my MP3 player, not an FM transmitter!!! While I was waiting to have that installed, at Best Buy, I had to wait inside the store, so I bought a car cleaning attachment kit for Beloved Dyson. Tried it out when I got home- it works great!

Only one more day of vacation left- and I'm going riding on the General James Van Fleet paved trail. I hope it's nice and pretty and the person I tricked into going with me likes it. It's a 100 mile drive.

Time for a nap!!

Lise...

A whole bunch of us from the perth mtb site have moulded together and become biking partners/friends etc. Linda and her hubby are part of our mould...
We often go camping & biking and I just try and keep up....:D

Here's what tom posted about the incident-

At the hospital the doctors put her elbow back in, which would've hurt like hell, but she was doped up. She has a cast on her arm, which will be there for 4-6 weeks and then I guess she will have to undergo a bit of physiotherapy to help all those stretched / damaged tendons heal properly. She will see a specialist in a few days, so hopefully we will have a better idea of what the full deal is.

I saw the xrays and the lower arm bone had been forced out of the elbow socket and about 4cm back. It looked bloody painful. I am trying to get copies to post up. They don't have hard copies of xrays at Royal Perth.

Stiff Brush- like an upholstery brush.

Upholstery Head- not powered, but spins a brush really fast by magic or something- great for seats and floor mats.

Flexible Crevice Tool- (when I was shopping for the dyson, the guy at Best Buy showed me why this was a cool attachment- it's the size of a regular crevice tool, but pulls out so there is a black flexible section, so it can bend almosst 180 degrees and not lose suction!!) perfect for vents, radio, under seats, dash, seat cracks. My favorite of the three.

I just stand the whole vacuum on a mat outside the car door, then the hose reaches into the car.

Fantastically well! I have the "animal" model - it's purple (an happy bonus). I have 2 dogs (both with long thick hair and around 70-80 lbs a piece) and 2 cats. The old cat seems to get stressed and denude himself a couple of times a year, so there's lots of cat hair around. The hair still gets caught on the beater bar, but that's expected. The suction power is amazing! I vacuumed the carpet and then cleaned it with a hoover steam cleaner and didn't pick up any other hair. Now that's impressive. I totally recommend getting one! Emptying the cannister is really cool - it detaches from the vacuum as a closed system and a door on the bottom drops open. No mess and no dust flying in your face. Very nice!

I don't know about dog hair, but it will pick up four inch feathers and NOT clog and pull all the sticky little poofy white down feathers away from the baseboard and suck the feathers right out of Milly's cage when I vacuum underneath it. It's miraculous. I have the yellow one, The Ball. I think they make The Animal The Ball now, too. It steers way better with a ball. It took some getting used to. I tried it out in the store for an hour before deciding. The sales guy told me that all the different models are the same base vacuum- the only difference is which specialty attachments they come with.

You could buy a whole bunch at Walmart, then make a monetary donation to a food bank or medical emergency fund or homeless shelter to help the folks who work at Walmart make it on the low wages and lack of benefits.

I lived in a little town that got a Walmart. It was pretty devastating. I've become a bit of a passive activist (is there such a thing?). I try to buy stuff only at places that pay living wages and give decent benefits to all employees even if it costs me more. I figure if I'm getting something cheap at Walmart, it's only because I'm ripping the food or medicine from one of their employees for the lower price.

Guilt. Guilt. Guilt. And I'm not even Catholic...;)

I got so sick last night. Rode home from the clinic thinking I was going to puke the whole 3 miles. Wondered how someone like Corsair with a long, uphill commute would've done it. Started puking, etc, once I got home. My sister came over and helped, changed my sheets, etc. I was down for the count. Supposed to start a call shift at 7 am, called around, got someone to cover for me, last puked at midnight, got up at 5 am, ate some saltines and gatorade, came into work at noon, doing ok. Just feel tired and dryyyy. Drinking water, gingerale, gatorade. Praying for a pretty quiet day.

Thanks, guys. The thing with being on call is that you can't just cancel it, like you could a clinic. The patients will go into labor no matter what. If I'd still been puking, my colleagues would've found a way to cover for me. We're into vacation season, though, and the half that aren't out of town this weekend are already working in a clinic or on call. I still feel like a wrung out dishrag, but the nurses are helping me, and (knock wood), I have only one pt so far, who's not needing much from me. Off call in 3 hr, 48 min!

I am so lucky to have my sister in town. It helped so much.

KnottedYet - good idea on the donations. I detest Walmart, it's killing the local stores. We have the biggest Walmart in the state - in a town of 15,000 people. Go figure. I do my best to shop elsewhere and online when I can, but for some things it's either just way too much cheaper or it's the only option. That stinks, but that's how it is. Hopefully soon we'll be out of here and we can shop at better stores that treat their employees better.

I did tons of yardwork today - after my 28 mile ride this morning. I felt great after the ride, but now from squatting down and trimming copious amounts of myrtle-like vegetation, I can barely bend my right knee. My back isn't too happy either! Aargh! I'm going to do a short ride tomorrow morning more to recover from the yardwork than the ride. I WAS planning to run, but I'm thinking the knee won't appreciate that!

I do, too. But in this case, we don't have any locals that carry Clifbars or Sportbeans. It's the lesser of three evils...They're all chains of some sort or other ... Kroger - grocery store, Walgreens - big pharmacy/and everything else store and do carry sportbeans, and Walmart - need I say more. IT's very frustrating.

We used to live next store to the owners of a local hardware store. We still go there for hardware, lumber, plumbing - even though they're pricier.

I don't think I knew Annie. I came back to Masonic at the end of 2003, so she may have been gone already, or just leaving as I was starting.

Lucky you to have three dogs! Brina sounds like such fun. I love Rotts. I have a fantasy of owning a bunch of dogs with the same coloring -- dachshund, Gordon Setter, Dob, Rott...not going to happen, but a fun idea.

I am feeling a lot better this morning. Just weak. The thought of food doesn't make me feel sick, though, so that's progress! And, of course, you know I weighed myself--down 4.5#--whoo-hoo! L.

I figured out this weekend that I am _so_ lazy, I would rather wear a cycling tank than one of my cute jerseys, because then I have to pick a sports bra, and even though I got two new Patagonia bras which match just about everything, they now, for the summer, feel too confining. Then, on my feet, I wear sandals, so I don't have to coordinate socks, even though I have a huge collection of adorable bike socks that match everything. Sometimes I consider the amount of sun exposure I would be saving by wearing a jersey (sleeveless!!) but I just can't do it any more...

On my Sunday ride, four people wore Shimano sandals, and three wore cycling shoes. It's the trend!

I had to laugh at that. There's lazy, and then there's lazy. Lazy as in "I can't be bothered to wear certain clothes", and lazy as in "I just ran 50 miles through the swamp and dunes for fun, oh, hey, did you see my pictures from the 600 km bike ride I just did?" :D :p :D L.

I looked at my Shimano sandals this morning, and thought, sooon, soooon!
The weather is perfect for it, but I'm going out of town again this weekend, and who knows if I'll get in a ride before I go. But next week, let the summer begin. Lise stays home. And rides and runs. Wahoo!

I'm not sure. It would probably take 20 hours. I don't know if my knees/back would hold out that long. Sometime soon, though, I want to do 50k there.

I was all set to do a 50 mile race a few years ago, but my work schedule switched from 5AM-1PM to 6:30-Done, so I didn't have time to train adequately. And then I discovered road cycling.

LISE!! I'm putting the DVD's in the mail today!! Then I will no longer suck!!

And returning all three different pairs of the Performance shorts. Didn't like any of them.

Now, (not that I have any money anyway) I'm torn between the pair of shorts Susan recommended, Sugois, and a pair of Shebeasts someone else recommended, that have "cooling mesh" along the back, both ~$100, or the knickers in the cool print with a little black tank with a blue flower- about as much as the expensive shorts.

Whe BF went outside this morning, there were two huge packages. We don't know when they came- I went to bed at 8:30, he went to bed at 9:30- never heard anything.

One thing is a big wood and canvas wardrobe for BF, with room to hang stuff, and a bunch of shelves for the world's largest T-shirt collection.

http://tinyurl.com/gjdrj

The other thing was a really pretty off-white/yellow distressed wood "boardwalk cabinet" for Maizey, for her tank to sit on, instead of the super-cheap looks like crap white particle board shelves and falling apart never worked right drawer thing. She has all her stuff and the glass lizard's stuff and the torts' stuff inside, plus BF's cave diving lights and chargers, which needed a safe place to live.

http://tinyurl.com/hqhq8

I am so happy!! Can't wait to get home and assemble the wardrobe.

I was wondering how the shorts were working out for you. Thanks for the update! I have only 2 prs of shorts - both of less than great quality. They work for now, but I'm saving up for some good ones.

General drift...

This sounds wierd, but it's odd how things are really going my way right now at work. I applied for that job, you all know, and since then everything has been falling into place. I have been trying to breed disease resistant fish. This is the first year to get spawns - I have 5 already! That's plenty. I've been searching for genes associated with resistance. I'm sitting here at home analyzing data from my most recent experiment and what do you know - I think I've found one! It's been like that for the past couple of weeks. There are more examples, but I don't want to bore you. I guess I've accomplished what I set out to do here and now it IS time to move on. Unbelievable! It's really a wierd feeling. Does that make sense?

I'm riding a 200k on Saturday. It's part of trying to earn the R12 award by riding a 200k or longer event for 12 consecutive months, as well as counting as the 200k ride for my Super Randonneur award, since I wasn't an RUSA member when I did my 200k in January...

I'm feeling strangely reluctant. It even includes segments of two of my favorite paved trails! I guess maybe it's because I suspect traffic and big hills. Plus it's a hundred miles away, starts at 7AM, and the host hotel is $100, so out of the question (especially when compared to the price of shorts!)

So as encouragement I've ordered the Shebeest Elite Distance 2 shorts. I had a hard time deciding between them and the Sugoi RS Flex shorts which the only reason I was even considering was because Susan recommended them to me- but, I've had two Sugoi shorts that I hate, and have never tried Shebeest (unless the icky knickers that I sent off to CA in NC were Shebeest, which she loves, BTW)

I hope they are nice.

Nanci - I just got the Shebeest shorts which are (I think) the ones you are getting. They are comfortable - BUT - that mesh area at the back of the shorts does NOT block sun. After the double century, I noticed the top of my butt hurt. Then yesterday my husband said "The top of your butt's sunburned!!" I hadn't really noticed it til he pointed it out.

So just a safety tip. Maybe stick some sunscreen back there. It could just be that mine are maybe tight and stretched out more - but heck, all cycling shorts seem tight.

Have fun on the 200k. I'll be doing a 200k myself on Sunday! (Roughly).

Plus...my DSL and phone lines are down at home. No computer at home. Cell phone OK. All of this will pass...blech.

Isaac the cat is sitting at my left hand, purring and sniffing my elbow, now walking over and sitting at my right hand so his tail can rest on my wrist as I type. He would like to take a field trip to your house. To "visit" the snake and the birds...I thought that might not be such a good idea. Welcome back MP - I was wondering where you were????

Speaking of cats and anoles...when I lived in Lafayette (LA) my cat was outside one day (I don't let them out often) and caught a green anole. I yelled at him to let it go. He promptly looked at me, looked at the anole and then ripped it's head off. I was horrified! Mr. Fish, of course, thought it was hilarious. Now I can laugh about it, but geez that was gross!

I have a critter problem at my current house. A rabbit. This rabbit and I are going to go at it one of these days. It has eaten all of my broccoli plants. I've protected my green beans, but I'm sure he'll figure out how to get in there soon. It has also eaten my bell pepper plants. Now come on - who has ever heard of a rabbit that eats bell pepper plants????? It ate 15 of them last week. I went to ... Walmart .... AARGH .... and bought more plants that were much bigger than mine that were grown from seed and... it ate 2 of them! I saw it doing it this time. I ran out into the yard screaming at it. I'm quite sure my neighbors think I'm nuts!

Sheepish confession--I have no idea how ebay works. Plus which, how do I know it's new? I wouldn't give her one that was used. But thanks for your vigilance!

I actually got Isaac to drop a bird he caught on our enclosed back porch in a former apt. I put the bird on a broom and held it out the window, on its little perch, until it caught its breath and flew away. An anole, though? No, he'd just rip its little head off, I'm sure!

Lise - I have virtually no experience on ebay either. It says it's new. Maybe you could email the person. It says they are in Chicago. If not - I'm sure one of the LBSs should have it. Good luck!

We have to be careful with one of our dogs - the stray we picked up. He looks like a Golden Retriever, but is really flaky. Someone chopped his tail off - tragic. Anyway - he has a thing about catching fledglings and eating them. I've been seen chasing him around the yard yelling "leave it! leave it". We don't let him outside much at this time of year. He nearly caught an adult cedar waxwing one year. He leaped into the air to get it. Luckily he missed.

ebay sellers have ratings that are based upon feedback left by previous buyers. Some people of thousands of positive transactions. If a seller has overwhelmingly positive feedback (say high 90s) and their negatives are for reasons out of their control (ie a buyer gave them a negative feedback because the post office lost a package and the buyer clearly declined insurance, but they are blaming the lost package on the seller anyway) then you can be reasonably well assured that the item is exactly what is described. I recently bought my husband some pedals for his moutain bike off of ebay. They were impossible to find anywhere else but were easily found on ebay. And they were new and sealed in the original packaging.

My daughter was delivered by a midwife- Steve.

I had a miraculous idea last night. You know I am into wine tasting and wine logging (at my bargain basement level I take it very seriously!) I have two books of tasting notes, with one bottle on each page. At first, I tried really hard to remove the labels and paste them on the pages- but most labels are really hard to remove, especially intact. BF got tired of 20-30 bottles lined up in the laundry room, waiting for their labels to fall off by old age, or something. Finally, I cleared out all the bottles, gave up, and settled for empty spaces where the labels were supposed to go. (I did think about drawing them, but decided that wouldn't work too well). So last night, I had the idea of photographing them!!! And it works!! I print them out on plain paper, three to a sheet, and they are about life-size. I am so happy! I wonder if the wine shop will let me go there and photograph all the bottles I missed...

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- State wildlife commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to remove bald eagles from Florida's list of animals in danger of extinction and to downgrade manatees from endangered to threatened.

The commissioners also voted to upgrade the statuses of the Panama City crayfish and gopher tortoise to threatened species.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted 7-0 to strip bald eagles of their threatened classification and to downgrade manatees because both populations have shown signs of rebounding.

Florida's three-tiered system includes classifications of endangered, threatened and special concern, the lowest level.

Wednesday's decisions won't go into effect until management plans are approved for each species, which could take more than a year, officials said. Eagles and manatees remain protected under several federal laws, including the 1973 Endangered Species Act.

The Gopher tortoise, which nests in dunes, has survived for 60 million years but biologists estimate their numbers have dropped by up to 80 percent in the last century due to coastal development.

Under a current state permitting process, developers are allowed to bury alive some of the reptiles as they make way for construction. Under the upgraded classification, a new management plan will be devised that will limit those live burials.

Good job of rolling outa harms way ;-)

We had this discussion elsewhere somewhere here: rolling vs sudden crash. And you can't ever control/predict/think which is right to do, happens too fast. Luckily your body just knew what to do.

I think it comes down to that sometimes, muscle memory.

Rolling you're going to bruise maybe a lil' road rash. But that heals. It's those sudden stops that cause real bad harm or worse.

Hey Nanci - I'm feeling a bit better. The saddle caused the bruise - that sounds right. I hadn't thought of that as a possibility. That would explain why the left side (the side on which I landed) has a worse bruise.

That Adamo saddle is really bizarre looking. I'm not sure it looks comfy. I can see why there's no pressure on the squishy parts, though. The back end looks odd. Is it wide? Hard to tell from the pic.

I'll have to check out the eaglets. I'm kinda stuck sitting here working on hubby's woodworking website. Don't feel much like gardening today, ya know? I think the headache is finally gone!

Nanci

What I especially liked about the Adamo (means pleasure in Italian!!) saddle was that it was obviously very well-made. Beautiful leather, titanium rails. The rear of the seat was perfect- not too wide, not at all spongy. The "nose" was wider than my Vitesse, which the owner had initially worried about too, but she said it wasn't an issue. It felt like my sit bones, but more like the more forward part of the ishiums, not the tuberosities (the part which you can feel sticking out) were perfectly aligned on padded rails. Quite a different feeling. Not uncomfortable. Just very different. The front stuff- suspended in air not touching anything.

Looks like a storm is coming! I hope so!!

DrBee
06-11-2006, 04:15 PM
Are you talking storm in the immediate sense or of the tropical variety? Mr. Fish told me there's one predicted to head your way, but I haven't had a chance to look at the models to see where exactly.

The saddle reminds me of a ship from Star Wars or Babylon 5 maybe. It does look really wide in the front. I'd be curious to see how if felt after a long ride.

Hey, guys, I'm home! I am sooooooooooooooooo glad to be home. It was a good weekend, but (as always) very intense. It was the annual celebration of the start of AA 71 years ago in Akron, Ohio. I spend the weekend talking with friends from around the country, from London, from Tokyo, running around to meetings and stuff, eating baaaaad food, and it all gets a bit intense. I did get to go out for a run one beautiful clear morning.

Fishdr, sorry to hear about your crash. I haven't read anywhere else yet--came here, "home", first! :o Hope you're healing well, and I agree with k.n. about the arnica.

Nanci, the DVDs were here waiting for me, and, for the last time, you never sucked! Why don't you go to www.ironman.com and see which DVD you'd like to see--I'll buy it, and we can begin the lending library! I'll send it to you when I send yours back.

argh...what to do first? eat? unpack (unlikely)? read more TE boards? lie down on my bed with the cats and not get up for a good long time? that sounds good...:) Glad to be home.

Welcome home Lise! Glad to hear you had a productive weekend - even if there was bad food and it was intense.

I have been thinking today about how much I want to get out and ride (once the bike is fixed) AND run and when I'll be able to do that. What is happening to me??? I really must have hit my head ;)

Nanci

I was talking storm in general. But all that came was strong enough wind to blow the barbeque around the patio! Dill and I stayed out and just got sprinkled.

But, little did I know, Alberto is aimed right for us, but still only a tropical storm. We really need the rain. I think we're getting some today, and more tomorrow when Alberto goes through!

DrBee
06-12-2006, 04:33 AM
Alberto is up to 50K today and looking somewhat impressive. Looks like you'll get that rain you wanted. Might weight down the BBQ, though.

I'm about ready to leave for Jackson to get the bike fixed. I'm going to get my new pedals (clipless) and shoes while I'm there. I was waiting until my free maintenance visit in July, but that seems to have been moved up.

I keep feeling more/different aches and pains as time goes on. Today it's my right hip and my right wrist. Ugh!

Another wierd thing - I keep seeing scrapes and black pavement scuffs on the stuff I was wearing Sat. My Livestrong bracelet is all scuffed up, my roadID anklet is scuffed, my shoes, etc. Sort of eery as I realize how much of me hit the pavement.

Wish me luck today! I'm getting a new helmet, too. I can't decide on the color. hmmmmm.

I'm feeling a bit better this afternoon. Today was my telecommuting day, but I couldn't motivate myself to work - so I took sick leave. I've been reading my triathlon book and laid down for a bit. The kids just attacked me while I was laying on the bed - that was fun! We had a giant tickle fest while Mr. Fish took the dogs to the vet for their annual shots. We had way more fun than the dogs, or Mr. Fish for that matter. I also found more bruises/soreness in places I was unaware were hurt. Kid feet have a way of finding them, you know.

I think I'm snapping out of it! Now if only the wind would settle down, I could try out those pedals! :)

The last time I got pulled over, the cop missed the person in front of me that was going MUCH faster than I was. Then he had the nerve to complement me on how well my kids were buckled up in their carseats! Now, you can go to the Walmart parking lot at any time of day and see easily 6 cars with kids in them and no carseats in sight. Kids climbing all over the car! Why can't they go after those people??? Did you tell him you were listening to hurricane news and were distracted?

I can't stand the not matching. I am getting into a super-whiney mood. Why can't ANYTHING just be nice??? (Well, the Shimano sandals were- I love them, and Maizey's cabinet. And my PI Gel Vent Pro gloves, and the Showers Pass jacket.) (But the last 25 pairs of shorts and knickers weren't.)

Did I mention that I hate my first ever event jersey, from Three State Three Mountain? It doesn't fit. I went through all sizes of everything, male and female, and it just doesn't fit. I'm sure there was something wrong with the wine- not that I just didn't like it. Now I'm drinking a Turning Leaf Chardonnay, which I will not buy again, because it has no fruit tastes- only velvety, thick butter- but, oddly, not very oaky taste.

It's still raining. Good. We need it.

I've had such a bad day- I'm considering opening a bottle of Three Sisters Dahlonega Gold- a dessert wine- irreplaceable- which I had put in the fridge for a day when BF was having an awful day at work, which we didn't end up drinking.

But no- not tonight.

I need to go to Target and get cool wrapping for my Secret Sister package. I had a great time with the last one.

I'm already worried about the July 200k. It's going to be hot- though how much hotter than 101F it can get, I don't know- but with all Clermont's hills, multiple times. The RBA is talking about starting at 5AM. That would be better- less time in the heat. Too bad because I frickin' wasn't paying attention today- I'll have even more trouble affording the hotel room.

But maybe some of the same cool people will go.

No, that's it, and there are two more- one on each side! All the previous years' jerseys have been really pretty...

But no matter how awful it looks- it still didn't fit.

(I was trying to hold it- stretched out- with my foot <since it's been stuffed at the absolute bottom of the jersey drawer since I returned from the ride>- <so you could see the penis in all its glory>-and photograph it at the same time).

I have been having such a hard time motivating to go to the gym during the week. Grr. The only time I can go is 5:30 - 7 am, and I was in a routine where I was going twice a week, and doing weights and spinning. In May I got in a rut because I decided I needed some "recovery" time after Davis double, then a super hard 110 miler, then ESDC double - 3 tough weeks in a row. And recovery is great but now it's like I am just doing a double century or hard 100 miler every week and that's it.

Need some consistency. I swear I am going to the gym tomorrow.

Watching the Ironman DVDs Nanci sent me, and feeling so inspired (not to do an IM, though, watching those complete Weebles totter over the finish line--YIKES  ) Nanci, the anniversary one starts breaking up like a bad satellite transmission at about 40 min into it. We were watching a ST-TNG episode last night (my daughter likes it already) that was a Q episode! Now that's a wierd coincidence. Q on TV...Q here... hmmm

Lise - that is too cool that you have a connection to Q. Good luck with the guy(s). When's the date(s)??? Supercool that he checked his studio messages to see if you called!
MP - I love the signature line! And - what did you do on BJ???

We were probably watching the same episode. My daughter loves it, too!!

Basically, on BJ, SK mentioned an interest in the fact that Jonathan Boyer, first ever American in the Tour de France (also won RAAM in 1985) is riding RAAM this year. So I mentioned in a reply the heated debate going on on a Ultra cycling email list I belong to about Boyer - he was convicted of child molestation. I didn't really get into specifics, nor did SK BUT one of the Cyclonauts asked slantz the BJ administrator to remove all references to Boyer from the thread. So SK and I were a little bent about that. I mean we didn't get into huge specifics, and it's not like we totally hijacked the thread - we really didn't. Just a couple of emails about facts dealing with Boyer. It's not like we were taking a position on child molestation or anything (DUH), but the facts are the facts.

maillotpois
06-14-2006, 08:27 AM
And I'd previously had an email censored (nicely) by Slantz - I'd made some reference to one friend of mine "kicking everyone's @sses" in mileage and was told that inferred profanity was not okay. I really hadn't meant anything by it. I guess my time at the DA's office comes out every once in a while. They have a low threshold for profanity. Which is entirely their prerogative since it's their site - but we were a little miffed yesterday that if one person asked for non-offensive posts to be removed that they would do it.

SadieKate
06-14-2006, 08:40 AM
Yeah, my post was horribly offensive. It essentially said that if you're acquitted (at the time I didn't know Boyer had been convicted) that one should be allowed to participate. Fer crying out loud, I thought this was America and once you had been found innocent you were allowed to resume your normal life or if not once you had paid your debt to society you were done with it. Somehow this was considered a negative in the thread. So maybe I did take a position - that the laws are the laws and they are what makes the USA a good place to live.

Nobody said anything pro or con about the facts of the case or Boyer's character.

Nanci

It sounds like they're a bit heavy handed with the sensoring. I'm very surprised they gave in on a single request to remove references. It doesn't sound like you were taking sides or trying to totally hijack the thread to me. Craziness!

Lise - how is photographer guy? Or the other one???

We are watching ST-TNG again - Ferengi. It is so funny to hear a 4 year old try to figure out what a Ferengi is. We have finally convinced her that Warf is a good guy. She says she does not like the ones with the big wrinkles on their heads.

Made spaghetti tonight - yummmmm!

Lise
06-14-2006, 06:24 PM
Ferengi are tough to figure out. Perhaps the most morally ambiguous characters in the ST roster. Do you remember early, early ST, when Klingons just looked sort of Middle Eastern (as I recall)? Must've had a small makeup budget for that season! I love ST. I never got into Voyager or the retro one very much. But a boxed set of TNG or DS9 would see a lot of action in my DVD player!

Photo guy--I wrote him this morning, he wrote back, sounding interested, I wrote back again...I realized I was feeling anxious about him finding out I'm in recovery, so I just took the bull by the horns and mentioned it in my last email. I haven't heard back from him yet. If that's something he doesn't want in his life, or makes him not want to get to know me further, then let's hear it now. Before I meet him and like him and kiss him, all the while thinking, "....yeah, but when you learn this about me, you'll be gone." The guy I was seeing in March stopped calling me after I told him. I don't know that's the reason, as he never told me. When I said it, fairly casually, he just said, "OK", no other response. Slept with me that night, kissed me goodbye in the morning affectionately, and ... into the wind.

The other guy sent me his number, and I emailed back that I'll call him tomorrow. I'm on-call for the hospital tonight. I just got report from the midwife ahead of me--she had 5 deliveries in her shift, so, by the numbers, I should have a quiet night. I took a 90 min nap, and didn't feel like having another "getting to know you" conversation tonight.

Moooore will be revealed. fish, how're your body and spirit feeling today?

Thanks for asking Lise! I'm feeling better every day. My bruises are looking quite awesome - nice tones of yellow and green. Very nice under the fluorescent lights at work. When I bend my right knee, the entire thing is bruised. It's hard to see that when it's straight.

I told the story a gazillion times at work today. Hopefully that will end tomorrow. My mind is doing better. I felt a bit more like normal today. I'm going to wait until Saturday to ride/run. I had my occupational health surveillance program checkup today and told the doc about my crash. He said that I very likely did have a concussion. I figured taking a week off after that would not be a bad idea. Saturday morning I ride!!!!! I keep looking at my new PI shoes and say good morning to my bike when I go through the garage. It's getting to be time to get back on and ride!

I hope you have an easy on-call night.

I grew up watching the original ST - from about my daughter's age. The old Klingons did look a bit different. At least they didn't have a pretty bob-cut like Warf. I never liked that look for him.

Talk to ya tomorrow!

G'night all!

Lise
06-14-2006, 07:22 PM
Yeah, I always thought Worf should have snake-like dreadlocks or something. Remember the "Trouble With Tribbles" episode from the very first season of ST? That's when the Klingons looked like Saudi Arabian royalty.

Photo guy wrote back with about three paragraphs of questions about recovery. We shall see.

He wasn't convicted, he accepted a plea bargain. The discussion boards on the RAAM site have some "guest" posters talking about Boyer too. A few of his friends, and someone who works in the Monterey Co. DA office (where he accepted the plea bargain) all support him. Knowing someone personally that was wrongly charged as a sex offender, I try to keep my mouth shut until I hear all sides. Wish others would too.

Interesting thread - don't go here if the discussion will offend or p*** you off.

Long post but i feel like typing

Urhgth...I've been wandering around my house for the last 40min or so searching for my extra bike light...

The nightflux one i have on my roadie is going to burn out in an hour and i need another light to get me home or so...I've no clue where i left it and hate only riding for 40min as it's there's no point..Ian's not home tonight to make a light up for me-even if it was heavy i'd still go...(he makes bike lights and the night i'd like one he's not home...)

I came home ready to do a 2 1/2hr ride but i'll have to wait until tomorrow night i guess...

I am struggling to see at night even with the lights i have...Nanci do you have the cateye Double shots????

ONe more thing nanci...i'd like to do long distance rides with Audax (randoneurring in aust) but i know there are no shoulders on most of the hwys in Western aust (even if there were it would just be pea gravel) & i;'d have to contend with road trains (not sure what you call them in the states but transport trucks with two or even three trailers). Any advice???

off to search for the elusive light...

Hey lise,

I think it's morning now where you are...i'm off to bed soon so i can get up & join the group run in the morning...have to make up for not biking this evening...

Never did find the light..I have no idea where i put it...

Ian started making lights a few months ago...The batteries are wayy too heavy for me however we're working on it...I told him i'd try one & now that i have a MEC hydration pack (friend went to Canada & brought me back some items...) the battery may fit in it....HOwever-if it's still not what works for my eyes, we'll look at the cateye double shots..

I just find it really hard to focus at night...the streetlights on my fave cycle route make it worse-i often can't see corners & go much slower-but i still go anyways...night vision goggles wouldn't go amiss...

I"'m soooo excited....The Oilers won game 5...!!! Looking forward to game 6 & 7....There will be a game 7....GO OILERS!!!!!! Make Edmonton the City of Champions again!!!

I just alternate two Cateye Microhalogens that I got for $9 each. They work great, have about a three hour burn time each, and I can really see no reason to get a more expensive light if these are ok. Actually, I have four- so I don't have to be switching batteries during the day. I numbered them with a permanent marker. So I use 1 and 2 in the morning, then 3 and 4 at night, and if night's going to be really long, then I replace the batteries in 1 and 2 during lunch. It's easier to just swap out the light in its mount than change batteries when I'm really tired.

I don't know what to say about the trucks, except wear a super-reflective vest, have several red LED taillights, make yourself impossible to miss. The roads I ride on are so rural it's very rare to see a semi. I guess I'd probably get off the road if they are crowding you. I guess that depends on how much oncoming traffic there is- if they can get in the other lane.

My house is 84F with the AC running full blast...Feels pretty cool to me.

I had a pretty CF day at work today. My other tech wasn't watching the student, so every time I'd leave for two seconds, something would get effed up. Didn't get out of there till 4:30. But- the OT will help pay for the ticket.

BF said the cop who wrote me the ticket would have let me go if I had name-dropped BF's name. Exactly how do you do that??? Hi, I'm special, because my BF works with you. Who gives a cr*p you say? Ok, now I am REALLY embarassed...Yeah, can't see myself doing that.

Lise, sorry to hear he's taken.

I am the only non-Trekkie in the world.

But I love SF.

Though not as much as when I was a kid.

But my daughter met her perfect DH at some sort of anime or gaming conference.

BF and I drank a $22 half bottle of my most beloved wine ever last night. The fourth bottle I've had of it, and we have one left. There were only 1000 bottles bottled. Three Sisters Dahlonega Gold. Vidal Blanc dessert wine. Oh my.

I bought my first bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape tonight. I'm afraid to drink it. It's Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, 55/25/20. The huge wine store only had two kinds, so I picked the cheap $20 bottle...I am curious. I love Rhone wines, so I should love this. Plus, when you ask a wine snob what their favorite wine is, this is quite often the answer. But, of course, obscure French wines are not in my database, so it's a total cr*pshoot. But I figure, if the giant wine store only has two kinds, they both must be pretty good, wouldn't you think?

BF is at some concert I wasn't interested in- so- quality time with the torts and Mr. Bird!!! I love evenings when I am on my own, at least till I go to bed.

My SS stuff is almost ready to go. Just needs wrapping now. I don't think she reads this thread, but who knows. So if it's you- I'm sorry I'm such a procrastinator- but you're getting a really cool present!! I even snooped through all your posts, so I could have inside info on what snack you'd totally love. I am so smart! S-M-R-T! (Remember Homer Simpson??) (I used to have that on my computer as the sound it played when I had to reboot...)

There, I've drifted enough for a while.

We keep our house at 80F, but for some reason my office at 78 feels more like 90. Maybe 'cause there's no air moving. The guy next to me has ice cold air coming out of his vent! I have a corner office, so maybe I'm at the end of the loop and the walls and window make it hotter. I don't know. All I know is that it's yucky!

I was wondering how long it would take you to shave all that ;)

Enjoy dinner - once it gets cooked. We're having leftover spaghetti - FishJr requested it. Maybe I should call her Fry. That would better suit her brother.

Well, it sure didn't take 20 minutes!! Leftover spaghetti sounds wonderful. Anything that isn't the same old thing (like the last two nights' potroast) sounds wonderful.

I was just thinking, you know when you've worn your panties for the absolute last time, when they aren't even fit to be period underwear any more? Do you wash them one last time, or throw them directly in the trash? I wash mine! Is that weird?

I was also thinking, do boy shorts only look good on women who have butts like Tour de France riders? (tiny) I probably already know the answer to that.

I have a note in my wine log that says "French Wine sucks!!!!!!!" Except for Banyuls, and some red Bordeaux cheapo thing from Publix. Why can't they just say what it is??? So what about "terroire," I just read a big article about a blind tasting that prove it was all BS!! Muscadette- sucks. White Bordeaus- sucks. Anything from France, including Goat Boy, sucks!!

This thread is like what I'd talk about, if I still lived in MN, if I still could call my girlfriend Sue that I miss more than anything in the whole world, and talk to her every night.

I think girlfriends, the kind you have for your whole life, through all BFs and DHs and kids and pets and jobs and school and cars and horses and houses and all, are the most irreplaceable thing ever, once you move away and things aren't the same, unless you go home to visit for a week every five years, when things just fall back into how they were before you ever thought of leaving.

Icky undies get washed, then become rags to clean the bathroom. Appropos, I think.

Any woman looks fabulous in boxers. Especially in knit boxer-briefs. UnderArmor. (girl-cut boxer briefs are best)

Boy cut undies.... cut like the old-fashioned tighty whities... not so good. Haven't seen them on a real woman looking good, just looking good on models. I've bought a few pair (ex officio, Jockey, Bali) cuz I'm an optomist. Used 'em to clean the bathroom.

My favorites: UnderArmor women's compression shorts. I think they have a 6 inch inseam. Man, are they comfy. My second favorites: Ibex Roaster Boxers (womens). Very warm, not the best for hot days but great on cold damp PNW summer days (50-55 degrees) when you really really want to wear shorts.

Seattle Summer Wear: sandals with wool socks, shorts, turtleneck with wool sweater, rainjacket.

I'm old enough to remember when we wore LONG underwear bottoms under our shorts in the summer. The height of fashion around here was blue polypro longies under khaki shorts. My longies were white, and I felt like a pre-adolescent pariah.

Today's summer wear here in north Seattle: I'm wearing wool socks, long khaki pants, wool zip-front Icebreaker shirt, and wore my Ibex wool sweater over it most of the day.

Underwear - I wash them, too! Usually they make it through a couple more rounds of wearing/washing than they should have and then I eventually throw them out.

I saw your avatar on the back of someone's car yesterday when I was out for a ride. I almost yelled, "fishie!", but realized the extreme unlikelihood that you were up in Chicago, driving south on Elston Ave. So...what does it mean?

Seattle, while beautiful, sounds too chilly for me. I know, who am I to talk, with Chicago winters, but we do get a bit of summer here. Two days ago I got a long lunch break at the clinic. A friend and I walked up to "Little Vietnam", ate in a storefront restaurant, walked around, picked up some pastries in a Vietnamese bakery, walked back. It was a beautiful, sunny day, not too hot, not too cool. I said, "hmmmm....June 14. One of the 5 days a year in Chicago when people say, 'I could live here forever!'." The problem is the other 360 days! It looks like it's going to be good today, hot this weekend. My problem is that the City fritters away its money keeping the clinic freezing cold somedays. Unpredictably! So I bring a range of clothes in my backpack.

At the risk of jinxing the Green Hornet, I'm saying it here: I'm riding her to work today! :D

NO guy had his house/bike/everything destroyed, so the forum he participates in rented a really nice Cervelo for him for IMFL.

I just had a patient who is a dairy cow vet. They get their C-sections standing up! Right out in the field! They get an epidural somewhere on the tail, which still leaves them able to stand, and then the vet just cuts right in through the side! Amazing!!

Thanks for explaining about the ribbon. You see so many of them these days, but that one really stands out.

I learned today that my ex-boyfriend, the cop, has married some Romanian woman and is helping her get her citizenship papers. Must've been a whirlwind romance. ~sigh~ Even though I didn't want to marry him, it kind of hurts that the guy who said, "I love you and always want you in my life", but "needed more freedom" although "it doesn't have to be forever" ... is now married to someone else. Reality check: I am really glad not to be settling for what that relationship had become at the end. And I truly do wish him well.

Both photo guy and sober guy want to meet me, and I them. And the beat goes on!

Best of all, the Bianchi rode like a dream this morning. There's a guy I see at the clinic occasionally who was walking out as I walked in. He said, "Great bike! I just told my wife that my next bike's going to be a Bianchi!" Decent of him to mention the wife, so I know we were really only talking about the bike. :p L.

Lise - You didn't need that ex anyway! :) How's photo guy? Any more on that front?

I was thinking pineapple/vodka slushie actually. But alas, no vodka. I do have some tequila - I wonder how that tastes with pineapple..?

tequila might be good. hmmmm... what about rum? kind of like a mai tai?

Don't have any rum either. Curiousity did get the better of me and I have to say, the pineapple/tequila slushie wasn't bad. Not nearly as good as a margarita, but quite drinkable. :D

I'm so excited for dinner tonight!! Angel hair pasta, five cheese sauce, capers, sun dried tomatoes, grilled cut up Italian sausage, garlic bread. To go along, a bottle of Vintner's White and Rosa from San Sebastian, a local winery- so nice foxy Florida grapes!

The Susan-recommended Sugoi RS Flex shorts are here. They made it out onto the bike for a test drive, and passed! Full report after the ride tomorrow. Love the chamois. It isn't going anywhere. (Like bunching up, or halfway up my back, or out to the far reaches of my cheeks!) This is my reward for going on, and on, and on, and on about all the faults of prevoius shorts, and making my perfect shorts wish list well-known- Susan PM'd me a while ago suggesting the Sugois. I'd had two bad experiences with Sugoi, so was suspicious, but after the Shebeast whatever they weres didn't work, and the three pairs of Performance didn't work, and the wicked expensive LGs weren't available in my size any more (although I guess I could have ordered them somewhere else- I chose to take that as a sign) and the something or other gel chamois with the perfect chamois had the giant leg openings- I was willing to give Sugoi another shot.

Also got a Sugoi tank, black, with light blue flower, which has an open back, not the usual t-back, which is nice, and doesn't seem to allow _too much_ cycling cleavage, and is a weird silky fabric, and has a _black_ bra! For some reason the black bra excites me! Probably because I've never been a white bra fan, which carried over subconsciously to cycling tanks. So- new outfit tomorrow. Actually, I got the tank in hopes of it matching my imaginary Prana Knickers, which are still expensive and I have nowhere to wear them but I love the pattern. But I hoped that I would like it anyway- in case the knickers never materialized.

Ok, off to take the torts out for their evening grazing.

Nanci, glad to hear the shorts seem to make the grade! I know how you've suffered. And if you like 'em, I may give 'em a try.

The clinic admin who broke the new of ex's marriage to foreign bride told me, "she seemed really dependent on him". I remembered how he loved it when I needed something, like when I was crying over a car accident and he could comfort me...not that he enjoyed my suffering, but he really loves saving people. He's a cop, fer cryin' out loud. He likes to be the hero. Except that I don't need a hero. I need a partner. Who can occasionally be my hero. Deeper insight.

I went for a little spin after work, felt like a speed demon riding north, I mean 20 mph was no problem! I couldn't really tell which way the wind was blowing, since the leaves on the trees seemed to be going every which way. Then...I turned around. Ah, that's the direction of the wind! IN MY FACE! Had to work hard for 14 mph.

Last night when I rode to volleyball, I saw this guy at an intersection. He had great yellow panniers, and seemed really strong. He took off at one angle, and I at the other. A few blocks from vb we met up again! I said, "Well that answers that question." He replied, "Darn! I always thought my route was faster!" We laughed, and I said, "yeah, well you're stronger and faster than me." "Nah", he said, "I'm sort of a weenie." Good looking guy, but wearing a bandana instead of a helmet. I figured he was gay (because of the weenie comment, not because of the no helmet). Today, riding home from work, he passes me and yells out, "I'm going to try harder today!" I catch him at another intersection, and say, "Love your panniers!" He replies, "Oh, yeah, all the chicks say that". So now I'm confused. Gay? Not gay? Doesn't matter, cuz he's not bright enough to wear a helmet? We flirt for a bit, and he takes off. No names exchanged. Whatever, it'll be fun to run into him around town!

Nanci

Weenie is a pretty common term among cave divers, both to describe a person and as a verb, as in "I weenied on the dive when I was only a mile into the cave." So, I wouldn't count that as gay.

I just finished jury-rigging a toilet repair, since I really, really, really didn't want to rebuild it, although I have done it before. BF informs me this morning, at an inopportune moment, that "the dealy is broken." I didn't ask _which_ dealy, until I went to flush and nothing happened.

Apparently, the plastic dealy that connects to the flapper dealy that lets water out had broken off. At first I didn't see how it could be repaired, or even replaced without replacing _everything_, but it came to me as I was driving home and noticed the little pile of safety pins that I have in case I have to pin on a race number or somone else needs them.

So I stuck a safety pin through the end of the plastic dealy (which in normal tiolets is a chain, I believe) and through the plastic flapper dealy, and it worked!!! Ah, saved.

NOW it's time to take the torts out. Poor little guys are asleep.

thanks for the 411, Nanci. I guess more will be revealed, if I keep running into and flirting with him!

Safety pins rule. Sad to imagine the world before they were invented.

Off to the residents' graduation party, at which I will eat good food, drink a lot of seltzer water, and watch my friends get drunk.

Date with sober guy tomorrow. Photo guy emailed me that he will call and ask me out, but he hasn't done so yet.

I found that eventually the safety pins, or in my case, picture wire) will rust out and you'll be back where you started from. I started using 2 tie wraps - one looped thru the other to replace the chain. That lasts for 6-12 months but eventually they break too. Go figure. I hate rebuilding the guts to toilets. Got one that does not make everything go away - sometimes takes 2-3 flushes. If I could afford it, I'd just get a new one.

Nanci
06-16-2006, 05:29 PM
I think, even if you bought a new one, you'd still have to install guts.

This one is a problem, because there is no chain, only a plastic thing that looks like those closures for trash bags, and then the flapper thing is also plastic, with no attachment point.

Maybe the safety pin will take a long time to rust through.

I think mine have problems flushing becuase of water pressure.

Lise "thanks for the 411, Nanci. I guess more will be revealed, if I keep running into and flirting with him!"

Sorry, can't help you Lise, I don't have long range gay'dar installed :)

The fact he has panniers that "all the chix like" bodes well. If gay he'd change them to the ones "all the guys like" whatever those are. :p

But batting for the team without a helmet? That'd be a dealbreaker for me.

Ooh, the famous Zoic Capris have arrived :D

Nanci - I had a similar thing happen in my toilet. The thingy that attaches the chain to the float dissolved into nothingness. Mr. Fish fixed it with something or other. Every so often in falls off, but seems to work most of the time.

Dinner sounded good! That doesn't sound like grilled or frozen. We had chicken, zuchinni, squash, and stewed tomatoes - over rice. Super easy and really yummy!

Lise - pannier guy (???) sounds intriguing. Keep us posted on your encounters. Geez - you could be dating 2 or 3 guys at once. You're going to be very busy! :p

I still hate riding on the road at night esp on a friday....

I hate road riding in general..

Ahh...the beauty of mtn biking...all i have to contend with are kangaroos, rocks & pea gravel...I can handle that...

Plastic thingy for toilet dealy: the miracle of zip ties! You can buy a mondo bag of assorted sizes for pretty cheap. They come in handy for lots of things, and they don't rust or dissolve in water.

Yellow pannier dude: I agree with Trek. Not gay.

Trek: Do tell about the capris!!!

Shorts: I wanna know how they turn out, cuz I might want a pair from TE, too.

I'm hungry, I'm out of beer, I want to ride my bike, and I need to clean my apartment.

Went to the residents' party, got to say nice things about them with a microphone in my hand, enjoyed the shocked looks on colleagues' faces when they saw how nicely I "clean up", and went for ice cream with another midwife and her husband when we realized there was no dessert at this buffet! Shocking. The food was great, though.

Pannier guy is cute, but the "no helmet" is a repulsive force. Maybe next time I see him, I'll say, "What's with the no helmet, dude? A head like that should be protected!" ;)

Meeting sober guy tomorrow. Photo guy emailed me that he's going to call and ask me out. He has yet to do so. I know, if I ended up actually dating two guys at once it would be pretty funny. In my spare time. Love coming here to talk about it though!

Ready for a ride today!!

Last night: before Memorial Day, I saw suspiscious bird activity in BF's truck. You know, those little square holes on each corner of a pickup truck bed? Well, there were the beginnings of a bird nest. I watched for a while, but didn't see anything else. We took the truck out of town for a few days to go to Wickham Park. he's been driving it, but minimally, since he can drive his squad for almost everything.

So last night, I'm going out to look under a big pot by the shed, for crickets for Fagalo, and I peek my eye into the hole. It is dark. It smells birdy. I don't see anything, and when I pull away to let a little more light in,m whoosh, a wren flies out. Nice. There are three eggs in there. Probably going to hatch soon, if they were laid the end of May/beginning of June...I don't know what to do. I asked on my pigeon rescue list, because a lot of the people on there are "real" all-bird rehabbers. I'm hoping there's a way to gradually relocate into a bird house then up into the tree...Should have kept a better eye on it, and provided real housing.

I have two pigeons, Dillbird, about 12, and Milly, who will be three in July.

One cornsnake, Maisey. Cornsnakes are non-venomous, and are the most commonly kept snake. To keep venomous snakes in Florida, you have to have a license, which requires 1000 hours of handling, and a property inspection among other things. Maisey lives in a 20 long tank, which is beautifully decorated with hollow logs and hollow stones and vines and a water crock. She likes to come out and visit, and watch TV, or go out in the yard, where she leisurely crawls about, or climbs trees. She never attempts to escape or resists being picked up again. She has never hissed or opened her mouth or coiled up to defend herself. She eats two thawed frozen mice every Sunday.

One glass lizard, which is a lizard with no arms or legs, named Baby Russell, or Russell Junior. We used to have Big Russell, but he died, presumeably of old age. He lives in a 10 gallon tank, underground, and we rarely see him. He eats crickets. His crickets eat orange cubes. Sometimes I dig him up if I haven't seen him for several months. Every time I think about releasing him, I see some dead on the road, and he comes out and is very active a few times, so then I decide to keep him. He really isn't handleable- too fragile and panicky.

One eastern box turtle, Fagalo, who lives in a pen outside, with shelters and a pool and a giant pile of grass/hay/Spanish moss called Fagalo's Mountain. He sleeps inside it when it's hot, and climbs on top to observe. He eats slugs, nightcrawlers, crickets, grasshoppers, but no fruits or vegetables. I caught him trying to run across a highway at mile 90 of my first Century, and threw my bike down and screamed we had to stop, and ran out in traffic to stop cars from hitting him. Then I put him in my Camelback and finished the ride.

Two Desert Tortoises, which were released from a vet med research project, and were to be euthanized if homes couldn't be found. I have a permit. They are endangered, and may only be obtained by adopting or from captive hatchlings, but may not be sold. Buttercup and KoKo. Three year olds. They are in a 40 long, but go out to graze every day and are only fed natural grasses and plants. They will be moving outside when I build a large protected pen and burrows.

One gopher tortoise, aobut four years old, living freely in a burrow twenty feet from our back steps. Cracker Chicken. Very wild- not at all pet-like. He appreciates the blackberries and purple flowers that mysteriously appear outside his burrow.

So all low-maintenance pets, except Dill. Sometimes I wonder if BF thinks we have too many animals. But a few days ago I got this e-mail.

"I would have never equipped the home with so many pets.
Every morning I realize that I'm glad you did!
Our pets R the coolest!"

Isn't that sweet?

It sure is. And you are sweet for telling us about them. You have a descriptive gift. I feel like I'm walking around the place, looking at them. How did you build the underground space for Russell Jr.? How did you learn about building the habitats for all of the creatures?

CC, about recovery--I've been sober 21 years; really 22 this month, as my last drink was sometime in June, 1984. I count my anniversary from when I went to my first meeting in July. I think you're asking the "recovered" vs. "recovering" question. It can be debated either way. I say "recovering" because it implies the process of daily self-reflection and responsibility contained in the 12 steps of AA. It also means that my physical process of intolerance/craving with alcohol isn't cured, but arrested. I have not had the experience of drinking again after getting sober, but many have, and it's never gone well, that I've heard. Feel free to ask, and please remember that I'm only sharing my experience, and don't speak for anyone else.

Looks like a gorgeous day, probably really hot. Feels like summer at last. :D L.

I've been wanting to ask you more about your recovery, too Lise. Thanks for sharing with us. So........... when's the first date??? I say make some sort of comment to pannier guy about the helmet. I agree, though - no helmet, no date.

I hope you all have great rides today! Mr. Fish is at a woodturning meeting all day today, so no riding for me. I think another day will be helpful anyway. My headaches are pretty much gone now. It still feels like there's one lurking, but it's so far in the background that I only feel it every so often. Tomorrow morning - I ride (unless it's raining). It'll be my first ride since the crash and my first ride clipless... This ought to be an adventure! But today - yardwork (if it's not raining), clean, and play with the kids.

CC - I've lived here for 5 years and the coldest temp was 19F (-7C) (probably for about 2 minutes) ;). Our typical winter temps at night are around 32-35F (~0-2C). We had a bunch of frosts and a few freezes this year. Still didn't knock back the mosquitos. We even see them flying around in January and February.

In contrast - our summer highs are 35-40C. The highest I've seen was just over 40C. With the high humidity - that's pretty darned hot!

Right now it's around 30C, but feels like 35C. We're having one of those high humidity days where walk outside and just pour sweat. Riding on days like this is not fun. Lots of hydration needed.

How hot does it get for you in the summer?

CC - Wow that's hot! You'd have to ride in the middle of the night in order to not keel over! It's about lunchtime here - 11:40am. The humidity is dropping a bit and the wind has kicked up, making it much nicer out. We're supposed to get rain today, but on the radar it looks like it keeps drying up right before it hits us. We need rain, too. The farmers here use long PVC tubing for irrigation - less evaporation. They've been using them A LOT lately.

Nanci - how were the shorts???

Nanci
06-17-2006, 10:51 AM
I'm in love...I posted a little bit about them in the June 17th ride section. Perfect. I also really liked the tank top:

http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=17606

I got the black and blue one. I was a little worried- black may have been hot, but the fabric was really wicking and cooling- I never felt sweaty. I enjoyed not having a T-back. I liked being able to move the straps around so I wouldn't get a line. No back pocket, but I never use that anyway. Comfortable bra. A _little_ cleavage, but not like you could see all the way down.

So, before I loved these shorts, I hated three knickers, and kept a fourth pair just because I was tired. Hated six different shorts models, from three manufacturers. Mostly what I didn't like was chamois-related, but the Canari Gels had a cool chamois- the rest of the styling sucked.

Maybe when I am ambitious, I will take a picture of all chamois in my collection together- perfect Sugoi, perfect Trashy Cat, bunchy LG, and quilty Primal.

Cool Nanci! I'm glad you finally found some shorts! I love the tank. I'm surprised you didn't get hot in black. Your heat is at least as bad as what we have here and I can't imagine wearing black. Good wicking goes a long way. Now all I need is to squeeze some money out and I can try some new shorts. I guess is I love my saddle in the lousy shorts, just imagine how happy I'll be with good ones!
