Wow. I took a three hour nap today, and only woke up because Chloe wanted dinner....

Safeway has Wild Sockeye Salmon on sale this week. It is absolutely gorgeous, now I need to find the perfect recipe. It will be tomorrow's dinner.

WARNING! YET ANOTHER KNOTTED WHINE! WHINE ALERT!

I think I'm gonna get fired. The subordinate (aide) I've posted about in "Dear So and So" has gotten out of control. I did talk to one of the owners of the clinic. The two owners and the aide had already planned a meeting about ME for next week. Owner #1 warned me that owner #2 and aide are "tight" (though aide bad mouths him behind his back so much that I had no idea). Owner #1 didn't want me to take it personally that there is going to be a meeting about me. I'm now invited to the meeting.

I get it. Aide complains about me obsessively to the staff (and makes comments to my patients). Aide is disrupting the function of the clinic with her obsession to the point that a therapist begs me to do something about her. So there will be a meeting about ME.

My fan club (mom, DPITA, etc) is telling me to start looking for another job, that even if I don't get fired or something at this meeting, that it's just not worth staying in that kind of environment.

I love where I work and the patients I work with. I like the staff, and even like the aide when she's not being a freak.

I think I need another margarita.

I love margaritas. I am back at traffic school. I think I am on chapter 7 of 10. I am drinking HRM Rex Goliath Pinot Grigio. It's...ok...I don't get what the difference is between Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris. Some books say it is two different grapes, some say it's the same grape with a different treatment. All I know is I love Pinot Gris- maybe my favorite white, and Pinot Grigio is kind of bland.

Why do they care if it takes four hours or less??? I hate finishing the reading then sitting waiting for the clock to run down.

I had a little disagreement with the ride leader on today's ride. I feel weird about it. We were on a rural two lane highway, a group of eight, I was back about fourth. We were turning left. There was a bike lane. There were a couple oncoming cars, and no cars traveling the direction we were, which I could keep track of with my mirror. The ride leader stayed in the bike lane till coming even with the lane he was left turning into, stopping to let the oncoming cars pass, then continuing across, but did not cross the road we were turning onto in a pedestrian-style turn/crossing. I checked for traffic behind me, none, signaled my turn, moved into the traffic lane, still signalling my turn and slowing so the oncoming cars would pass and I wouldn't have to brake before I turned, still no cars behind me (never were any) and as the last car went past, it honked at me- and I made the turn and pulled over to the right shoulder where we stopped to regroup. Ride leader said I had turned incorrectly. I disagreed- I think cutting across a lane of traffic from the bike lane is very unsafe. A bike is suposed to behave like a vehicle- that's what the other traffic expects, and it makes you the most visible.

The Florida Dept of Transportation would seem to agree with me:

A left turn should not be made from a through bicycle lane. See "Method of turning at intersections" for detailed description of left- and right-turn requirements.

Left turn: A bicyclist intending to make a left turn is entitled to full use of the lane from which a driver may legally make a left turn.

Instead of making a left turn as a motorist does, a cyclist may proceed through the right-most portion of the intersection and turn as close to the curb or edge as practicable at the far side. Before proceeding in the new direction of travel, the bicyclist must comply with any official traffic control device.

*******************

We even talked about it at lunch- and I still think he's not making a left turn in the safest manner. He's all, well what if cars would have come up behind you, what if this, what if that, and I'm like, but I was watching in my mirror. I didn't get in the lane until the time was enough for the oncoming cars to clear the intersection and there was still no traffic behind me. If there had been, I would have made a different choice, but there wasn't.

It's bugging me.

Would there be another job you could love just as much?

I'd hate to leave my job, but there are a million others.

My concern is that no-one would hire me if I'm unable to get a good rec from the job I've had for 1 1/2 years. I think the therapist who asked me to do something about the aide would probably give me a good recommendation.

The clinic where I work now is one of the best, with a huge reputation. To be fired by them or "have" to leave would really suck.

I want to go to grad school next fall (2007). I need a full time job for another year at least, then I can either go to school full time or continue working and do school part time.

I'm seriously considering working in a shoe store (the one we send our patients to, if they'll hire me). Or working part time at a Starbucks to get health benefits and working part time somewhere else.

I need another margarita. Again.

Well, if they were going to fire you, they wouldn't have a meeting about you.

I had to rip up more carpet today. Damn Peter Reid and his turkey neck!

Traffic School:

Many people don’t realize alcohol is a poisonous substance. The American Medical Association classifies it as a poisonous drug. Alcohol, in your body, kills everything it touches. It kills your brain cells, stomach lining, liver, heart and your kidneys. Everything it touches it destroys. A Brain Surgeon will tell you if you put brain cells and add a droplet of alcohol under a microscope, the alcohol devours the brain cell. It just eats it. That's what you are doing to body's organs each time you have a drink. Your brain cells and your nervous system are being affected by the alcohol.

I got a new Polar Bottle today in the mail- pink. It's GORGEOUS!!! My SS is getting its twin. Last time I got the green one- and it was pretty- but nothing like the pink. I like these so much more than the old white ones. For once a manufacturer makes a _good_ change!!

19 minutes...

I am so tired.

This is my last night of BF-less vacation. No more sitting out on the patio till dark. No more whiling away the hours here.

The bike club picnic is next Saturday. I have to bring something real this time, not watermelon...

17 minutes.

The Rex Goliath is getting better.

I can't wait till my new cycling books get here!

And the new season of Reno 911!!

15 minutes.

This is a lot of torture for accidentally speeding. Too bad I didn't know the protocol of getting out of it if your BF or distant relative works there...

But I will next time!

Funny we haven't heard from MP today. Isn't she at the Death Something or other?

There aren't enough organized rides in Florida in the summer- it's all triathlons now.

13 minutes.

OHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Fagalo ate out of my hand for the first time ever today!! Usually he's such a freak. I go out there with a big handful of slugs, and put them on the cookie sheet, then round Fagalo up and put him on the cookie sheet and try to set him down and put the lattice back on top of the pen before he takes off running. (As soon as he notices the slugs he's chowing down- but he's pretty shy.) So I caught a big grasshopper munching on my Mexican Petunias, and told him it was time to go visit Uncle Fagalo! I dig Fagalo out of his grass pile, where he is spending his afternoon sheltered from the heat, and he refuses to look, spins around, runs away, refuses to look- finally he turns and there is the grasshopper and he doesn't notice me holding it and CHOMP!! he's got it...Good turtle.

10 minutes.

Congrats on getting Fagalo to eat from your hand! Is there any critter you can't tame? (I was pretty impressed that in your snake video you KNEW he was gonna just curl up. Dr. Doolittle!)

Nanci, you were doing traffic school on line? How cool! Glad you got through. Sorry you had to do it at all. I also was impressed that you "knew" that the rattler would curl up. You are finely tuned in to our animal friends.

Snap--your baby pup is so cute. Glad the meds are helping.

KN--hang in there. If you act like a professional, it will shine through. I'd say keep looking for something you'll like better, though. It sucks to be driven crazy by the personalities at work.

I miss MP. Looking forward to stories from the Death Ride, Death March, Death Star, what ever it was! ;)

fish--everybody in your house well, aside from annoyed as heck with the tires? No more odd fevers?

I have had such a strange evening. I rode to the fundraiser--and went to the wrong bar. There are two of them, it turns out. Got back on the bike, rode to the right one. Big upstairs room, about 10-15 of the nurses, one doc, some friends of the nurses. Hanging out, talking, and all of a sudden, there's a huge influx of young men. Turns out they're a bachelor party who decided to join us. Which means they each contributed $35 to the fundraiser, so come on in! But they are all over us. One young guy was flirting his head off with me. It was an interesting cultural experience. He had to be 20 years younger than me. Half drunk. Giving me his best pitch. (no, I was not at all interested) I was polite, amused, and eventually drifted away. Another one of his pals slid his hand across my butt and said, "How's it going?" Are you kidding me? What a hoot. I have not been in a bar, flirting with guys in their 20s for...oh, 23 years! They had the raffle at 9:30, and then I zipped out of there. As I was unlocking my bike, a bouncer came over to flirt with me! Suggested I come back in for a drink. Said he'd seen me riding up and just knew I was following him. I said, "You're right!", hopped on my bike, and rode off into the night. OK, this crocheted black top must go on some dates. It works. And why are we single women riding in bike shorts? A skirt is where it's at! (Actually, I had my tri shorts on under the skirt. And I think the top may have had more to do with it...:p )

Came home and opened an email from one of the online dating things I was doing for about 6 months. They have a new service. "Chemistry" something. For the heck of it, I filled out the multiple page questionaire, and submitted it. Who comes up as my BEST match based on this extensive analysis?!? The architect who dumped me back in April! The guy I really dug who just stopped returning my calls after 3 fairly passionate weeks. It was creepy to see his face and read why the computer thinks we're soooo compatible. Yikes. I shut my profile back down and turned the thing off! Between horn-dog twenty somethings and a guy who already rejected me...this dating thing is a trip and a half. I'd rather do one of Nanci's rides!

I believe this is more than enough excitement for one day. Tomorrow, a meeting in the morning, brunch with friends, a few hours of lovin' on my little niece, Maya, a NAP, and then I start a 24 hour call shift.

Nanci's BF gets home tomorrow...:D ...thread drift should slow down considerably!

PS: I thought that bit about demon rum was hilarious. Show me one person that would in any way touch. If you drink, you drink. If you drink a lot, you couldn't care less that it's killing you! Who did the fine state of Florida pay to come up with that one? :o

Knotted---Do you have a rep, or ombudsman, or someone like that, who could go to the meeting with you?

Nanci--can't believe you can now do traffic school online. Brilliant! Some of your posts during traffic school sounded like the voluminous notes we used to write each other in high school ---bored out of our minds, rambling away. How we ever passed, I'll never know, since we spent most of the class time writing to each other.

Lise--my, what a weird night for you. Propped up with one hand (nice to get the compliments even if you wouldn't ever want to take them up on the offers), and swacked upside the head with the other (great to be matched with that guy again, huh? Gives you faith in their matching system...).

Glad you got that nap, Snap!

Spent all day packing up the contents of the first floor so that we can live in the basement for the next six months while the house is being expanded. Then they'll send us directly to debtors' prison so we probably won't even be able to live in the new house. Riding tomorrow. One week to STP.

I agree with Nanci---somehow, bring the fact that you have discussed this with a lawyer into the conversation. Sounds like this person is creating a hostile work environment for you. You have plenty of witnesses, too.

"Hell is other people." I've experienced similar things at work---people who are threatened by you for some reason or other and then have to trash you or do things to annoy you/try to bring you down to their level. I guess the best strategy is to do nothing to give her ammunition against you. Be polite and professional, but aloof. I found that pretending that the person doesn't exist is the best strategy. Other people notice what the person is doing and her trashing you makes her look bad. You can always take her aside and politely ask her why she seems to dislike you so much. Most of these folks are passive-aggressive cowards.

I will add one thing to what mickchick said: Be REALLY nice to the person. That just drives passive-aggressive people crazy because then they aren't "winning". It's good for them and good for you too. The nicer you get, the more it bugs them and the less they can do about it. Smile away.

Salsa--the funny thing is, we did have great chemistry. *I* thought we had a lot of potential as a couple. He kissed me good morning one day as we left his place for work, exchanged some emails throught the day, and ... poof. Never heard from him again. After he didn't respond to two calm phone messages, I got the point. It hurt.

Odd note about those matching services--one of them matched me with myself. You may be interested to learn that I am only 67% compatible with myself!

Good luck on the renovations. Hope you're out of prison long enough to at least walk around the completed place. :p Seriously, though, I believe that nowadays they prefer you work to pay them back, so you may just be on a home-prison-ankle bracelet-debtor thing, and will get to enjoy it!

KN, have you talked to a lawyer? I seem to have missed that detail. Is the Human Resouces person at the clinic helpful? They are supposed to be somewhat neutral, and should have information about your rights as an employee. Best wishes with it. L.

Knotted, hope that you get a good ride in.

what mickchick and salsabike sed, "the best strategy is to do nothing to give her ammunition against you. Be polite and professional, but aloof. I found that pretending that the person doesn't exist is the best strategy."

I agree, sometimes the best strategy (while looking for an exit strategy-new job) is be ultra super-duper polite.

Gives them nothing to use against you and makes their actions look all the more ludicrous. Plus it makes you feel good and is super funny.

I work with the great unwashed public (call center) and if I like you (callers) which is most calls I'm real nice but kinda casual about it.

If you're a jerk the worse you get the calmer and more polite I get. Drives abusive caller right up the wall but "No one's ever been fired for being too nice here...yet."

Sometimes we really blew it and deserve what you call us, I'm going to apologise up one side and down the other while I fix it for ya.

But most of the jerks, I feel that's just how they go through life. Such a waste, life's so short.

It could be she's in pain, emotionaly and or physicly. Sometimes we know that and while I feel sorry for the person it doesn't make her passing that pain on to you right or really, it doesn't make her feel any better.

Mostly I think it's a cope mechanism, old stuff that she's learned that makes her feel she has to act like that.

One co-worker said my strategy reminds her of the quote, I think is was Samuel Pepyes (sp?) who said "Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to he** in such a way that they look forward to the trip."

Hey Y'all!

Nanci - I am a chronic overuser of the !!!, too, so I totally understand.

Lise - no more weird fevers, thanks for asking. I've had a sore throat all week and FishFry is cranky (molar coming in ...slowly...). , but other than that we're good to go. FishJr is begging me to take her out in the pool again. We're heading there when I'm done with this.

Knotted - I agree with what everyone has said - be professional, limit your interactions, mention a lawyer, and maybe start up a quiet job search. Good luck! I'll be thinking of you!

And Lise - wahoo! Sounds like you had quite a good time at the fundraiser. That shirt and skirt combo sound like a winner!

Maya used to think I was Peter Reid, until Lise had to point out to her that I didn't have a TURKEY NECK!!! ;-0

fishdr- I used to be on a mailing list with a guy who consistantly typed like this...So every time I do it I am overly conscious of it...I try to limit myself to only one...per message/e-mail...we used to make fun of him behind his back by imitating his style...don't worry, though, he was and is a super jerk...

I have needed a new pair of sunglasses for on the bike for several months. I have Smith Toasters, which I like, but they were my first pair of bike glasses ever. Finally, one of the little blak nose rubber things fell off. i found it, though, and put it in my Trashy Cat coin purse in my bento box for later reattachment. But then, a few days later, I was oging to put some more Sport Beans in, and ofund this little black thing, and threw it away, because I'd forgotten what it really was...

So anyway, I've been resisting these for a long time. I have never had Oakleys before. I know everyone thinks you're paying for just the name, but you know what, Oakley was the ONLY one of Lance's sponsors that didn't desert him when he was diagnosed with cancer.

http://tinyurl.com/k8vq4

If they suck, I'll send them back. But they are my favorite colors, pink and purple! And not too unreasonable a price.

The Smiths I had have the interchangeable lenses, which is a great idea, if you actually do it. I rode them on MTB with the yellow lenses for years, then put in the dark lenses for road biking. But I don't like glasses when I first start out- it's too humid or something, and I don't like them when it's dark, either.

My driving glasses have yellow polarized lenses, which are the BEST, but very hard to find. I think STP has a pair, but they are super dorky. I don't like blak frames.

Every time I spell "black," it comes out "blak." I've just been correcting it. Do you think that is a link to my Coke Blak addiction???

I am having wine leftover night. HRM 40 Pound Rooster Pinot Grigio, and Bogle Petite Syrah. I read in a book that pinot gris is the grape that pinot grigio is made out ofm and in Italy it is a light wine that may as well be lemon water. In Washington and Oregon and some parts of California, they make pinot gris wine, which is much richer and more complex.

I don't think I am going to buy any more Pinot Grigio. White wines are so confusing. Reds are kind of all the same, only in degrees. Whites are so complex and varied. I like both. I used to be really into super sweet whites like Riesling and Gewurtztraminer, and still like them, but am appreciating things like Viognier and Gruner Veltliner and even Sauvignon Blanc more (although SV is widely variable). And then there is Chardonnay, which I have only recently learned to like, but already it's sort of all tasting like butter to me...I have a chart in the back of my wine tasting log which lists all my Chardonnays and what their characteristics are and how I rated them. And Chenin Blanc is something I tasted a lot a while ago- there's one from Oregon? Washington? that I love- Snoqualmie. Chenin Blanc is very distinct.

You all produced 8 pages of drift while I was out at the Death Ride!

All the folks I worked with to train them for the DR finished all five passes (yay!) including DH about whom I really didn't have any doubts.

It was WEIRD to be a spectator. Almost more stressful, because for most of the ride, the road is closed and you have NO idea what is going on out there and can only hope for the best.

It was fun to cheer people on. Man there were some fast riders doing it.

I also spent a couple of hours in the bar with my friend Zach. He and I did the ride last year, and his dad supported (and cheered) us. Now his dad was doing it and it was so great to be able to cheer for him. And we watch the Tour in the bar. Cool.

Hmmm, am I so peeved with Nanci about the entirely spurious "turkey neck" allegation in re: Peter Reid, my dream guy, that I'm NOT going to tell her about Maya sitting on my lap and touching each picture of Dillbird and Milly as we looked at them again and again on their home page? hmmmmm....no, that would be so mean, for Nanci would enjoy hearing that! :p We had a great time. We even looked at the mountain biking pages. We played in the sprinkler. We read books. We took a nap. It's a good life.

I just had the delightful realization that I'm only working a 12 hr night shift tonight, not the 24 hr shift I thought I had (that's next week). Whoo-hoo! This is prompting me to go haul the big-a$$ air conditioner up from the basement so I can sleep in cool quietness tomorrow. My across-the-street neighbors are a melange of folks from other countries who carry on their business on strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street. At high volume. argh. Very cool, MP! I was wondering when we'd hear from you! What is the "Death Ride" about? Is it a race? How're you feeling after this weekend?

Nanci, I did lots of research when I was shopping for sunglasses. I ended up with Tifosi Slips. I love them! And I actually do use the interchangeable lenses. Pink in the early AM and dark during the day. I haven't used the yellow or clear yet. The cool thing about these is that they only cost $50! The other brand I tried was Zeal Optics - they just didn't fit my face. I had them ship me 4 styles, but none worked. They were cute, but didn't fit right. With contacts, I needed no wind. Good luck with the Oakley's.

Lise - sounds like you had a fun day! Very cool!

Hey MP - nice to see you back. Feeling any better?

Nanci

I _have_ interchangeable lenses- I just don't bother to do it!

What I really would like are those lenses tha get darker and lighter.

I was just out doing yard work. I feel so badly for my loquat that is dying. They were my favorite trees of the ones that I planted when I first moved in. And $$$. One made it through the very cold winter fine, the other is dying a lingering death. But the elm that has struggled for four years has finally decided to live and grow, and the $10 oak I rescued a year ago is doing very well, and the baby magnolia that had its primary leader's new bud knocked off at the last possible second after being babied in the truck for an hour is doing well, too. The sycamores have gotten taller than the house. The crape myrtles, new last summer, on the south side, are having a hard time. They had new shoots all over when we had a big freeze. One is ok, now, and a couple others show new growth, finally, though probably won't flower, but several others are just stagnant, though not dying.

I need to think about what to replace the loquat with. I want a small decorative specimen tree- with either fruit or flowers. It's on the north. I'm sort of thinking about a holly. Maybe a dogwood- but they like to be sheltered under other trees. I could go with another crape myrtle, but I have the whole west end and south side planted with them, as well as three that don't have permanent homes yet.

Lise "What is the "Death Ride" about? Is it a race? How're you feeling after this weekend?"

Velogirl is also on this ride. sometimes also called Tour of the California Alps, also called Insanely Hard.

pretty good website about the ride here, in some ways better than the official site:

http://www.chainreaction.com/markleeville.htm

Arrrgh, just had to go outside do my best imitation of old fogey "you kids get off my lawn" at the 3 neighbor kids teasing Mae through the window and.... throwing dirt at the window.

So of course she's barking like a nutso dog at them

Then when I take her outside for a walk they want to run over, run right at the dog (never a real smart thing to do at any dog much less a pitt).

well, you've been throwing stuff at her so uh, no, don't be surprised if she thanks you're a threat.

Thought I was going to have to talk to the parents.

But when I stepped out to walk mutt, before I could say anything the Dad came over and apologised. Kids looked sufficiently chastised. Told the kids I'm not mad at them, just trying to keep them safe, it's not safe to tease any dog. Not sure that the littlest one gets that but I think Dad does.

I learned today that my voice mail at home has been taking messages, but not telling me about them, for about a week! Fortunately, just about everybody then called me on my cell. I may have dropped the ol' home phone one too many times...

Good news from my doc, though. First off, clean bill of health after skanky architect guy (this was my secret worry). Second, the clandestine fat-free yogurt I ate at 4 AM when I was supposed to be fasting did not screw up the test results! Blood glucose and cholesterol profile were all good. My mom is a diabetic with high cholesterol, so it's a reasonable concern. In fact, given my (generally) good diet and the exercise I do, my cholesterol is still borderline high. But the lipid profile is good, etc, and if my doc's happy, I'm happy. Sigh of relief. :D

Thanks for the link, Trek. That is phenomenal. Just incredible. I have so much respect for those who do such a thing. I felt my heart beating faster just looking at the pictures and reading the descriptions.

I was interested in their comment about riding at high altitude if not accustomed to it. They described my experience of running/walking/being in Salt Lake City to a "t". Headache and lethargy. What a disaster that would be on a bike.

Hope it was a great experience for all!

Trek, I'm also so glad to hear that the dad came out and you both got to teach the kids about respecting dogs. That lesson will be valuable for the rest of their lives. Just today I was teaching little Maya about offering a dog her hand to sniff before trying to pet it.

BTW, Nanci, cool to hear that your elm is doing well. We had a plague come through this neck of the woods back in the late '60s. Dutch Elm Disease. No one younger than me even knows what an elm leaf looks like around here. The beautiful, leafy suburb where I was born was denuded when they cut down all the elms. 40 years later, they have some decent sized trees, but it is not what it once was.

winddance "There is a link that would let you bring up the whole thread...all 103 pages of it!"

Could also start a new fresh thread drift? nah.

Lise, yeah. Very glad about the Dad being involved. Ya know no matter what the kids do goes on (I thought I'd seen the littlest kid teasing Mae once through the patio gate, now know that's true) if the dog has simply had enough...dog always looses that fight.

Told the kids with Dad there that I'm not mad at them, just want them and my dog both to be safe. The youngest says he wants a dog so we spoke very briefly that he needs to learn how to be around dogs and not tease them before he gets one.

That could work.

It's shocking really, I live close to an elementary school and many times I'll be walking Mae if I'm at home during a week day, walk near the school, cute dog....kids have left the playground to follow me and Mae down the block  uh, go back to the school.

And the number of kids that just run full speed at her ("aaah, lookit the cute puppy!!!!") I don't think these kids learn how to approach a strange dog either (ask if it's ok, let the dog come to you not vice versa...)

My doofy dog assumes that everyone loves him. I hope that someday I can use him as a therapy dog. (when he is a bit more mature) That is assuming I stay in healthcare as a career, or at least keep it as a hobby.

I have had Oakley's for years. Same ol' pair. They have been holding up well. Sometimes a brand's reputation may be well earned. Can't really go wrong ordering anything from Sierra Trading Post.

[QUOTE=Lise]Salsa--the funny thing is, we did have great chemistry.

Lise--God, was that the same guy you had in mind when you did today's post on medical results? Urg. What a s***head. WHY do some of them do that sort of thing? It's SO painful. Creep.

Hoho--those matching services are interesting. The occupational therapist I share an office with did that whole thing last year, so every week I'd hear stories. It's probably a good sign that you're only 67% compatible with yourself. You wouldn't want to be totally like yourself; you'd get bored...(I mean, huh? How weird...). Take heart, though--the first part of last night makes it pretty clear you have a big fan base. Even if Nanci is totally torturing you about Peter Reid.

Nanci---your long note during the last of traffic school (19 minutes left...I want my new cycling books...18 minutes left...I'm so bored...etc.) was a classic HS note. I kept a representative sample of our HS notes and found them yesterday while we were packing up stuff. They are still funny as hell and sound just like your note ("I want to meet a thousand guys this summer...LUNCH it even looks nice in print...I can't wait for the bell to ring; this class is SO boring...are you going out with Mike tonight?" etc., etc.).

MP--glad you had a good time, even though it was weird to have to sit it out--and glad your trainees all did well!

I couldn't wait to get home today so I could go for a ride around the neighbourhood on my new road bike tonight. My little guy was home so I stuck him in front of the TV and hoped for the best :) I think I'm getting the hang of the clipless pedals but I suck as going fast downhill so far. I end up riding my brakes on the hoods the whole way down and my hands and forearms ache by the time I reach the bottom. I did better when I was in the drops but I wasn't able to go from the one to the other once I was going downhill. What a klutz... On the other hand, I was AWESOME going _up_ the big sucky hill by my house. I never went under 12 km/h, even on the part that I usually only do 7 km/h. I am going to LOVE this bike.

But I thought if he could be so intimate with me, and then disappear without a word or backward glance, how else was he deceiving me? This has been a year of firsts in dating--plain ol' stood up by two guys for a first date, and *poof* from someone I thought was solid. It has rocked my self-confidence. It certainly seems that guys my age want women who drink. You'd think it would be less of a problem at this age, but you should see their faces when I say "I don't drink. Nope, no alcohol. No, not even wine..." etc. Thanks for your supportive words, and for backing me on the PR thing! :p

Trek, we have equally interesting experiences with our dogs. I have two rotts (see baby pic in avatar) and people are either terrified, or convinced that their entire reputation is a bad rap and they are really just big babies. Maybe, just maybe there might be a middle ground - nah, how silly, next you will tell me about that "gray" thing people keep trying to convince me exisits. And the number of people who suggest that their kids pat a strange dog on its back or near its hip - uggghhhh

Lise, don't know what to suggest about guys. They don't care what they look like, they all want 20-year-old models who are virgins. You know the joke, "why do all the rock stars date 20 year old bimibos? because they can!" The right one has got to be out there somewhere.

About the 9#+ baby - is this a natural delivery? That is truely impressive.

MP that ride looks awesome, but I think I would need a couple of years to get ready for it. Especially at altitude. We ski in Colorado every year and it always seems that just when I am starting to adjust we are heading back home.

Just had to tell someone about my disappointing day. BF and I are house hunting. Where we currently live has some historical interest (the building is from around 1520), but is not very functional. Drafty in winter, makes you feel drunk without alcohol (not a straight angle anywhere), on a very busy street, and with no garden. This week-end we looked at a house that seemed perfect. Spacious, brand new kitchen, huge garden, quiet neighbourhood, short walk to town. Just a bit pricier than we had hoped so we needed a day or two to think about it. I head off to the rental agency today to tell them we'll take it. Turns out someone beat us to it!

And to add to the frustrations....I've applied for this PERFECT job and I'm still waiting to hear back. I'm expecting to hear something today, but no luck so far. Wish they could just call me up now and offer me the job!

But for now I suppose I should get back to the kitchen. I'm making beef lasagna and strawberry pie with custard for dinner tonight. Should hopefully make us feel a little bit better after the disappointments this morning.

Oh before i go an ebay question for ye-I really want the cateye double shots & found some on ebay but am wondering about when the item arrives on me doorstep in australia-would there be extra taxes?? The price is great (they're $400 aud here in perth) $239.54 + s/h!!! I'm an ebay virgin shall i say...so any help is appreciated. If you know of any other ways to get this item let me know...

why not do both? find neighborhoods you like and ride 'em. Lots of places go under the radar, not listed in major websites, sold by owner...you'd want a neighborhood you can ride in, what better way to find that out? Much better feel for the neighborhood than driving it.

Just don't plant a fig. Well, if you plant a fig, don't ever cut it down (especially with a chainsaw).

We had a couple of holly trees (not with the major pricky leaves - only slightly pricky) at our previous house. They weren't too bad. Of course, I have never crashed into them. ;) The birds love the berries which is a good thing. Every year we would get a flock of migrating cedar waxwings (one of my favorite birds) that would come through and clean the entire tree of berries in one day. It was impressive to watch!

I thought about getting the lenses that change with the light, but was afraid they wouldn't get dark enough for mid-day sun down here. I'm sure they would, but I also didn't want to pay the extra cost.

They are the only shoes I wear (I wear the Florida sandals when I am not at work, and sometimes at work when they match my outfit) ever. Well, I have some Doc Martens, also very comfortble. Hey CC,

We had a great trip. Took our bikes so didn't have to rent but it was hot, hot, hot for Edmonton. Around 34-35 degrees and nobody around there has a/c  Unfortunately, because of the kind of trip it was - visiting Erik's family - we couldn't do much biking. Did one 30 km ride in Spruce Grove when we were at his brother's place but that's it. I really wanted to go to the river valley but just didn't have time. No one seemed to understand that I needed to go there to take pictures for a girl I don't know in Australia... ha ha....

Yes, I have to admit we went to WEM but only because I brought my 8 year old son with us and I had promised to take him to the Wave Park. Holy $#!% it costs $30 each to get in there!! Cheap me - we ended up going back in the evening when we could get in for only $20 each... It was actually pretty fun but I hated the mall part. 500+ stores and every one is a clothing store for skinny teenagers... I think that's the last time I'll ever have the urge to go there...

So I'm home now, sitting up on my deck, drinking coffee and surfing on my daughter's laptop. Trying to figure out how I can go out riding right now since Jesse's home.... Maybe Grandma will watch him....

later,

"Tears" as in ripping of the flesh, not as in weeping.

I had an aggravating, stupid miscommunication thing with the nurses on nights. Did they come to me to clear it up? NO, they complained about it to their boss in front of both the day and night shifts. By the time I found out this morning and cleared it up, I had a nurse from days sniping at me. argh. The truth is, they know who I am, I apologised for the miscommunication, and this one nurse just loves to take shots at the midwives. I get to be like KN, and act with professional curtousy, no matter what.

I am so tired. Going to bed. Perchance to dream, and if it's of PR, his neck will not be the focal point. :p

my boss (a male) is exactly the same way. he'll be gabbing along about something and then go off on wild tangents that ramble on to other wild tangents [for example, he was once telling me about this one policy that we have and then, about this high-level guy's opinion of it. next thing you know, he says, hey, that guy looks like eddie munster. then he starts taking about the munsters and next thing i know, he's talking about that doll that eddie munster used to carry around. that took about an hour]. I always make sure I pee before I ask him a question and I never ever go ask him something within an hour of my departure time.

OK. I am up. I am in the process of caffinating. I am going to a staff meeting, which is a 12 x/yr process of not losing my temper. One of my colleagues once said that midwives are not supposed to work in groups. It's true. We're rugged individualists who make decisions, give orders, and take the brunt of it if things don't go well. Put us in a group and ask us to make decisions together? Difficult at times. I respect (all) and like (most) of my colleagues, but...here we go!

Hey, CC! I am excited to try the Tim Tams! I never thought of bringing cookies to lure cute men. We may be onto something. I know, I'll bring cookies and a bottle of beer. The ones who go for the cookies first will be date-worthy. The ones who want the beer....can have it, since, as we know, I don't drink! :p

IMHO, nothing wrong with eating cookie dough. It's just fattening. It was also the worst possible dough--a mix in a bag made with margerine and water. You know I was desperate. The rest of the dough is in the frig. I should just make the cookies and take them to work to get it out of my house!

I love armadillos. They manage to be both prehistoric and cute looking at the same time. Fascinating info on their reproduction, Nanci! Are they mammals? Reptiles? I never thought about this before.

So what are Tim Tams? I think Erik probably would have accepted both and dipped the cookies in the beer. We had red wine and dark chocolate in a pool hall on our first date....

Do you use different leg muscles on a road bike than a MTB? Usually the fronts of my quads are sore, but this morning after my first 25 km ride on the roadie, the backs of my legs are aching. Hard to sit down... I like the idea of working more of my legs though - I guess I'll have to alternate on and off road to get a good workout.

Watching the TDF right now. It sucks to live in the west when you want to watch it live... I've decided that when we go to France next summer, I want to ride this section from Bordeaux to Dax (sp) - it's the flatest section in the country. Not exactly what Erik had in mind when he said he wanted to ride parts of the TDF... :D

OMG that baby armadillo is the cutest thing ever!!! Wow. I would have had a hard time releasing him/her. It's probably best that I don't work at an animal shelter or wild animal care center. I would get too attached.

So I did my first spin class and weight workout since the whole hospital/clot episode. I definitely will be making a comeback! It was great! I haven't been able to breathe this well for months, which sort of creeps me out. Is it possible I had clots in my lungs that long? Since there is no evidence of a DVT in my leg, maybe it is possible. Scary! All interesting things to discuss when I see the pulmonologist in a couple of weeks.

I just went on a big adventure with my student and a patient who was in the middle of a never-ending study with me, who had to go to radiation therapy four buildings over, who couldn't be transported by regular methods because he had an IV (who'd have imagined that, a hospital pt with an IV) so we had to get him on a van, and stop at the x-ray dept at the other building and take a picture, then take him to therapy, then wait 30 minutes, then take him back out, then four busses passed us up for unknown reasons before one would get us, and the battery on the IV went dead anyway...

Nanci
07-11-2006, 10:29 AM
Quoted from Armadillo Online!

http://www.msu.edu/~nixonjos/armadillo/index.html

Odd though it may seem, armadillos might someday help cure leprosy. Researchers have found that the core body temperature of the armadillo is low enough to favor the growth of the leprosy-causing bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. While this microorganism has been grown in other types of animal tissue, no animal model had previously been found that regularly contracted the most virulent form of the disease (lepromatous leprosy). Because the bacillus only tends to grow in cooler parts of the body, such as the feet, nose and ears, large amounts of bacteria could not be grown (attempts to grow the microorganism in vitro have not been successful). The armadillo, however, has a lower body temperature than most mammals, resulting in rapid development of the disease following inoculation. Because of the armadillo, scientists have been able to develop a vaccine against leprosy. The nine-banded armadillo has become the principal source of M. leprae in biochemical and immunological research.

Although there has been some concern about humans contracting leprosy from wild armadillos, this is not a common occurrence. My understanding is that most instances of humans contracting leprosy from armadillos involve people who have eaten undercooked armadillo meat. (You can read more about this on the Armadillos as Food page.)

Because of their unique double-twinning, nine-banded armadillos are also studied to learn more about multiple births and other reproductive issues. Some researchers have also explored the possibility of using armadillos in AIDS studies. In the past, the nine-banded armadillo has been used for skin and organ transplant experiments, tests of cancer-causing agents, and experiments on drug metabolism. The fact that one animal produces four identical young has been very helpful to scientists, because no experiment is acceptable without proper controls. Identical animals means that any differences seen between an experimental animal and the control animal are a result of the treatment, and not due to different genetic makeups.

We seriously need to figure out how to get a job like that! Lise could be the designated food taster and we all could take care of the wine. Sound like a plan???

Mr. Fish and I just spent the last 15minutes of lunch discussing Care Bears in the clouds with FishJr. She was going on and on about how they are playing in the clouds and that they don't live in rain clouds, just puffy clouds, and that the little lumps on top of the clouds are the Care Bears, and so on. We started asking her questions like

Us: "what happens when an airplane flies through the cloud?"
FJ: "they just jump off the cloud and float until the airplane goes by and then they float back up to the cloud"
Us: 'what happens when it rains?"
FJ: They have umbrellas
FJ: it's looking very care bear-y outside today
Us: Where do the Care Bears go when there are no clouds on a clear day?
FJ: They float off with the clouds. I think these clouds are going to be in Maryland tomorrow.

You get the idea. It was hilarious! She had an answer for everything we could come up with. I love telecommuting!

Yeah, I've seen that show a few times, I think I even saw the BC one. On HGTV maybe? Or maybe it was FoodTV. I used to love that channel. When I was on bedrest with Jesse for 3 months, I watched Food TV all day since I couldn't get off the couch...

So what's a really good Californian Merlot? or Cab Sauv? Something I can drink without food? There are a lot of wines I like but they need food - I want something with a big taste that I can drink sitting out on the deck, watching the sun set...

Kelowna, at least you're not up to 2 bottles a night! You have to cultivate a taste for the less expensive wines. One of my faves is a French merlot that's only $8+ a bottle (Bouchard Aine & Fils). That's cheap around here. We don't have any wine under $8 I don't think. Unless you buy it by the box and then it probably works out that way.

Our homebrew wine is pretty good. We made a great merlot last October at the U-Brew place and it's actually tasted pretty good that first day. It's not supposed to begin reaching its peak until this August but it's hard not to drink it now...

Crispy Crunch, Tim Hortons coffee and something else Canadian...it is...(I don't know if the potato chips would get through customs...??)

Hey,

We need an emoticon for very very excited....I don't know if there is one to show how one feels when one receives Tim Hortons coffee via mail....!!!

(Where's brandy when you need a smilie???)

Off topic....i flatted on my ride tonight just as i was heading home. I was in a darkish section on the bike path by the freeway & couldn't see myself replacing the tube there so i walked a bit. At the ped crossing/lights i gave ian a ring but he was still at work so i thought i'd walk to the next train station(2-3km away). I walked for a bit & another cyclist was nice enough to stop & ask if i needed help. I said no (reluctantly) as i felt bad making him stop but he insisted as he didn't want me to walk the next part of the bike section on my own...(sort of dark but ok otherwise-not an area bogans would hang out in) so he changed the tire for me..(i'm horrible with being able to see well at night even with street lights!)...

Kangaroo poop? Oh, wait, we nixed that already...:p I saw candy in an airport shop called "Bear Poop". I was going to get it for my nephew, when I realized it was chocolate covered peanuts. He is, alas, allergic to peanuts. But wouldn't that be a great candy for a 7 year old boy to take to school?!?

I had fun meeting betagirl, fujigirl, and songlady for lunch downtown yesterday. It was a very rainy day, but beta rode her bike in from the suburbs anyways. Not the greatest weather for songlady and DH to be tourists in our fair town, but so it goes. Looks better today. Turns out fujigirl and I know people in common through work, and probably even met each other before!

Getting my butt in gear--today I will get to work on time to wash the bike-sweat and dirt off me and be seeing patients on time! Have a great day, all (or good night's sleep, uke and cc!

Aero bars. Mmmmmmm. Whenever I go to Vancouver I gotta buy a bunch of Aero bars. the chocolates, not the kind you put on the bike...

Meeting was interesting. There was a huge, grandiose, paranoid, bizarre soap opera going on that I knew nothing about. Did you know I'm Satan, Sadam Hussein, Hitler, Osama bin Laden, AND Mata Hari? (jk)

Anyway, i stayed calm and reasonable. Aide threw a temper tantrum at owner #2. Ummmm, you don't do that... not cool.

Came out of it feeling much better than when I went in, and aide was left holding her bag and is still stewing.

Owners asked me several times if I was doing ok, and nearly apologizing for aide's behaviour. Thanked me for my patience.

Fish - "it all works out in the end" is my mantra! How cool to see you post it, too! (corollary is: it may not be the way you wanted it to work out, but it works out)

Knotted, good for you. Keep us posted.

I did something of a brick today. I rode to work (3 mi), saw 1/2 day of pts, rode home, ate lunch, napped 45 min, rode to a work meeting (3 mi), rode another 8 miles, locked the bike in the basement, ran upstairs, peed, put on the ipod, and went out to run. So, essentially, 8 mi ride, 2 mi run. Walked at least 1/2 of the second mile, sweat pouring off me. But my legs felt good. It was my lungs/heart. Keeping on. I have more hope that I can do OK in the tri 8/20. Running. That's the piece to keep working on.

No.

No?

I had Lasik.

When?

Last April.

She writes on the new application: Driver had Lasik surgery last April.

I was disappointed to see that didn't actually appear on the license! :p

It is so good to have a picture that looks more like me now. My old picture was from when my hair was about 2" long. I swear I thought I was smiling when they took the picture. Knotted - great job on holding your composure in the meeting! Cool on the mantra thing ;)

Um, what else.

Oh yeah. The Capitalize Every Sentence thread. That was really tough to read. Glad I wasn't the only one it drove crazy. Awl through the eyeball - good description. I felt like my eyes were going to fall out of my head!

Waterlase - I must know more and then move to civilization where they have this technology. I have major fear of the dentist. I haven't been in too many years because I'm terrified of the drill. I've only ever had one cavity and that was as a kid. So the fear is unfounded, but real none-the-less.

Lise - great job on the workout today! How hot/humid is it up there now? Very cool on the license! And - I agree that this does feel like our very own clubhouse, even though there are lots of people looking. Hello out there ;)

kg, my vision was really bad pre-Lasik. Legally blind. I've worn glasses since age 7, contacts since 14. I was reluctant to fiddle with something that I could at least correct with lenses. Becoming an triathlete pushed me to it--it's such a p.i.t.a. to swim with corrective lenses. Also starting to date again. At what point do I take out my contacts? Can't really kiss with glasses on. Can't really see partner without glasses.

Lasik was very scary, but absolutely worth it. I broke up with the guy I'd been seeing for 7 months the week I had the Lasik done. He pretty much initiated it, but I pushed it over the cliff ("yeah, actually, this *is* a break up talk..."). Friends later teased me that once I got a good look at him, I said, " " and got out! :o It was expensive (~ $4K), but I figure I would spend that much on glasses and contacts in 7 years, anyway.

I'm on call, no one has paged me (knock wood), but I keep waking up to look at the clock. I was dreaming that all these men were posting on TE; they were from the TdF peloton, just passing through. I'm not watching it at all--I have crap cable--but I'm reading the Postal Bus book Nanci sent me. Chicago has some little areas of street in which the bricks were never paved over. I rode on one of those today for about a block. Made me think of the races on cobbled streets he writes about.

Back to bed, perchance to sleep.

I finished the new Stephen King Book, Cell, last night and had related nightmares.

I am not the friend in Florida who wanted to send Lise a knife.

Lise, when you have Lasik, the reward you get is not having a restriction on your DL! (I wore glasses since sixth grade, then soft contacts the second they were invented, and had Lasik when I moved to Florida, like 1999?). It was the first DL I had in my life that didn't have the glasses/contacts restriction.

Don't buy that Postal Bus book, BTW. It really sucks. I mean, it's better than _no_ TDF book, but just barely.

I have a new one coming in the mail, though, form the Driving School Shopping Spree.

She said, if "they" tell you to evacuate, GO NOW, they really aren't kidding. She said there were all kinds of animals running all over the place, but the fires are so bad they won't let rescuers in yet. Poor little (and big) guys.

The wildfires are way up in the hills and I live in the depths of well it uh, rhymes with well, AKA central Palm Springs. So that would be about 20 miles or so. The fires are North of me and the wind is blowing North/East so I can see the fires but can't smell them. Las Vegas is at least a 3.5 hour drive and they are getting all the smoke. Thanks for being concerned but I am totally safe. Jones

Jones

The areas the fires are in are mostly small ranches/horse property. There are several places to go with your animals for emergency boarding for horses, etc.
I know that last year when the fires started they turned out some horses as a last resort and the horses ended up fine.
The local small zoo has desert tortoise adoptions every fall. I sometimes think about getting one but 100 years of tortoise care is a little daunting.

Jones, glad to hear you're in relative safety. Sorry to hear the fires are burning out there.

The look on the woman's face at the DMV was great. I've always had that vision restriction on my license. I imagine their job is pretty rote. My "no" to the contacts question really threw her. :o

CC, thanks for the suggestions on good looking Aussies. It took me a minute to realize you were talking about their team affiliations ("he's a Wallaby"). I thought, "wallaby? That's an animal!" I have strict rules about dating outside my species, you see. ;)

Lise

Come to think of it, they re-tested my vision. It was such a basic test--essentially, "can you see?", that I forgot about it! Of course, in the past, without my lenses, I wouldn't even have been able to see the letters, much less read them. Lasik is a modern miracle.

Morning everyone. I am feeling sleep deprived. I go to bed way too late every night despite saying that I won't (last night it was wine and hot tubbing under a full moon past midnight). Then Erik turns on the TV to watch the TDF as soon as he wakes up (this morning it was 6:30, thankfully not 4:30) so I watch a bit and doze a bit until the last 2 km when he makes sure I'm awake to watch them come in. Then I go back to sleep for about half an hour until Jesse bangs on my door to say "Get up mom, it's 9:00!"... So I get up and sit here reading Thread Drift while he gets to sleep some more...

Lasik - I have really bad eyes too. -10 or -11 I think. I haven't worn contacts since I was single (the first time) about 24 years ago. Maybe I should get some and wear them for awhile to see if can get used to being without glasses.

Wildfires - Aaack. Too scary. We had a big one here in Kelowna 3 years ago and we were evacuated for a week. My mom's house (and about 250 others houses) burned down. :(

Lise - here's a guy for you. He PM'd me on my diet website at Sparkpeople.... Since I do already have a significant other, and he's apparently looking for a girl who rides a bike, you can have him. I know you'll thank me. ;) I guess I could take it as a compliment at my age but.... ugh....

The strangest (so far) was the guy from Wichita, KS, who would very much like to meet me when he returned from Africa, where he would be settling his dead wife's affairs. He felt I would be an excellent mother to his 9 year old daughter. Also, I was very pretty. Which, of course, just sealed the deal for me.

My eyes were in the -10 range. Now, it's as if I'd had perfect vision all my life. Open my eyes in the middle of the night and see everything perfectly? Of course! FishJr went in for her last set of shots this morning. She was doing great right up until the 1st of 3 needles went in. I honestly have never heard her scream like that! It was so sad. She was crying so badly. I had told her we would go for a lemon-berry slush afterwards and told her to focus on that. Afterwards I asked her if she thought about the slush and she said she couldn't. Poor thing! Then as we were walking out, she said that the cotton balls on her arms felt like she was wearing kneepads on her arms. Gotta love her!

Related story about my now 22 yo daughter - she hated needles when she was little. Had to hold her down for every one of them. Got called by the school when she was 12 to come and hold her down. Fast forward a few years - she pierced her own ears, got her belly button pierced, and has the depo shot on a regular basis. I'm sure a tattoo is next...

I think we are getting a gecko. Em's babysitter is going to college and needs someone to take her gecko. Em really lobbied for this one - worked on her argument to present to convince DH that she should get the gecko quite thoroughly. So we get a gecko. I don't even know what it looks like. Geckos (Geckoes? Gecko's?) are interesting, but not exactly cuddly which I happen to think is an important factor in choosing a pet. My daugher has one (named Jade). Make sure you feed it meal worms instead of crickets. The crickets make too much noise and they sometimes get out and you have to track them down so you can sleep...

The cat really likes the gecko though. She can sit by the cage and watch it for hours...

Yeah - knowing that it wouldn't need crickets was a prerequsite before I would get on the gecko bandwagon.

You will have to let me know the name of the restaurants especially the Indian. My DH is English and loves Indian. We go back for the last 3 weeks of August and it is always good to have a new place to go grub.
In other news the wind shifted, I can no longer see the fire but I can smell it. Yuck.

I don't remember the name of the Indian place, but it is between the main part of SLT (Stateline) and the big park area - before the "Y". It is in a shopping center next to a Long's right adjacent to Heidi's breakfast restaurant. On the lake side of the main street there. Heidi's is a pretty popular place, so you should be able to find that place and then go just to the other side of the Long's.

Indian coffee is super good. Sweet, made with instant coffee but steamed and really good!!!

Pretty sure this is it:

Nikki's Chaat Cafe
3469 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
South Lake Tahoe, CA

The BBQ place was right across the street from the gondolas at Heavenly. Truly a hole in the wall next to a bunch of cheesy shops. But SUPER good.

Dear parents sitting around ignoring your spawn at the hotel pool:

Please remember that there are other hotel guests who are here on business and must get up at 4 am Central even though our bodies are still on Pacific time. Do you suppose you could ask your children to refrain from shouting and screaming like aliens? If you all want to behave like wild animals there is a wildlife museum down the way at the Bass Pro Shop. I'd be happy to hang up all of you down there in the hall of heads.

Thanks for asking! She's doing great! Mr. Fish said she ate lunch really slowly and then took a nap. She almost never takes a nap these days. Her arm that got 2 shots is a bit red and she says it's sore. Other than that - she's acting and feeling normal. She's always done well with shots. No reaction really. She was back to normal and doing her interpretive dance to music in commercials tonight and fishing for her brother (with a rope tied to a glittery baton). She's nuts!

Geckos are COOL! I used to run the animal care facility when I was a grad student - we had a Tokay Gecko (and big old one) that would eat pinkies (baby mice). Be sure to let us know what kind it is. A definite plus to not have to feed it crickets. I always wanted a gecko. I had anoles, but never a gecko of my own.

Thanks for the info MP. The BBQ place has been there a long time, it was there twenty years ago when I lived in Tahoe, I know exactly were it is. The Indian restaurant though, sounds intriguing.
Fish, when my daughters were still in there shot getting years, I always warned them a day or two in advanced and again on the way to the Dr.s., I told them it felt like a sharp pinch and let them pinch me to practice. The girls always did well with warning, on the one occasion I forgot to warn my eldest daughter it was a very loud Dr.s appointment. No matter, watching some one hurt your children is never easy and I used to always get teary eyed when the shots came. I am a wimp, a very talkative wimp today but a wimp all the same.
I hope FJ has recovered.

Last year I was truly nervous about trying the Seattle to Portland ride with Chris on our tandem--had NO clue at all whether I could manage it (he did it on his own the year before). We did, and I damn near cried when we got there.

So what did we talk about all the way home from Portland that night on the bus? What would we have to do to do it in one day this year (what kind of training, what equipment we took that we didn't need, how much faster would we need to get, etc.)? Why? Because when we stopped the first night at mile 126 of 206, I could've gone another hour or so, AND it was such a drag to get up at 6 the next morning and know we had another 80 miles to go.

Anyway, bibble babble here. What I mean to say is: if we were doing it again in two days this year, I'd be downright blase (or almost, anyway). After all this training, I KNOW I could do it in two days. But because we're going for one day, I am--what else?!!--nervous as hell. Sheesh. Apparently I'm not going for the serenity prize this year. Om...om...om...

I know that you TD guys totally get this because you all do the same thing.

Are you doing STP in 1 day on the tandem? You should be fine - you have already done the whole route - this is just compressing it. Be sure to start plenty early. 200 miles is a day takes a while, no matter what. You want to get as much done with early in the day as possible.

Sounds fun!!

salsabike

SK, you need to carry the large size tranquilizer dart reloading kit for moments like this. Although it sounds like yours was the greater need in this case, what with hotel pool aliens to be dealt with.

MP, we are doing it again on the tandem. Plan to be across the start line by 4-4:15 am, like last year. Good weather forecast--no hotter than high 70s, AND a slight tailwind instead of the usual headwind. Couldn't be better. And it IS a fun ride.

Just to put TD back on the right track: the song currently going around and around in my head: Road to Nowhere, Talking Heads. Why?? Who can say?

Note to self: Don't sit down to get caught up on TE with a tub of tapioca from the grocery store and a spoon. Waaay too much gets eaten.

I love Roald Dahl. I read Charlie and Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach to my class this year and then we watched the movies at the end of the year. I'm a big fan of J.D. myself. I like how Willie Wonka's internal screening mechanism is a couple of clicks off the norm. I thought the squirrel scene in the new movie was great.

Any other Napoleon Dynamite fans here on TD? I watched it just so I'd know what my friends were talking about, ended up buying it and watching it over and over again. We have a nurse at work who can do spot-on imitations of Kip and Napoleon.

I did not run this morning. After 2 hours of volleyball in a hot park district gym last night, I went and did the grocery shopping at 10PM. Not a bad time to shop--pretty quick. But I woke up this morning, heard the rain, and said, "no, not running". I've decided to count volleyball as a cross-training day, not a rest day. I don't play for the whole 2 hrs; sometimes I'm ref'ing. But it's a physical workout for probably an hour. I'm just starting to show the little signs of pushing too hard, physically.

For those keeping score at home, I have a date with Mr. Potential tonight. I remain in the "undecided" category on this one, which, I suppose, is why they call it dating.

Lise - How long have you been dating again? (I'm sure I saw you said that somewhere.) I'm 46 as well and was separated and then divorced 2 years ago after 22 years of marriage. I was terrified of dating again after all those years... Luckily, I didn't end up having to. I don't know how you do it.

Loved the ending of the TDF this morning. No spoilers here though....

I am getting very frustrated with not having an opportunity to ride my bike. I want to ride EVERY day but having a kid home all summer is putting a stop to that. I can only impose on my mom and his two sisters once in awhile. Anyway, it looks like I might be able to go this afternoon for a couple of hours when Grandma gets home from golf. Of course, Erik just got a call from a buddy who he hasn't seen for ages and they want to go MTBiking today. I may end up having to go alone today I guess... Good thing is, Jesse goes to his dad's for the weekend and I can do two long rides this weekend.

I'm rambling now - the kid (he's 8) put me thru the ringer last night when he and his friend disappeared for about 3 1/2 hours. The left at about 5pm to go play in the bush just up the road. An hour later, I sarted watching for them to come home. 2 hours later, I started wondering worrying a bit, 2 1/2 hours later, dinner was going to be ready is 15 minutes so I sent Erik up on his bike to find them. No luck. We both got out on our bikes and starting searching - Erik headed up to the lake that's a mile away and I was knocking on doors. Finally, at 8:45pm, Erik found them happily playing in the sand pit about 1/2 mile from home, right where they said they'd be. Someone how he had missed them on his first trip through. Ugh, kids... I need to make him wear a watch and give him a specific time to come home....

Lise, what are you doing on the date tonight? All that can be told, that is. Bike date? Movie date?

My first date with my husband, in fall of '85, was an all-dayer. Started with going out on his sailboat, which he was then living on while going to school, from about 11:00-2:00; then to a Cajun place for a late lunch; then we decided to drive two hours to Mt. Rainier to see fall colors; was pitch black by the time we got there; drove back to Seattle and had midnight dinner at Louie's Cuisine of China! We just couldn't quite convince ourselves to end the day...

Didn't meet him till I was 32, got married at 37, still think he's the coolest guy I know. So...never give up. Have fun tonight!

Thanks for asking! No problem. I'm still waiting to hear something. Sometimes with the government things move slowly. I expected to get a call this week. I talked with the Area Director's assistant earlier this week and she hadn't heard anything yet. So - it sounds like the guy is sitting on the apps for a bit. This, of course, is driving me absolutely nuts! They'll probably call next week when I'm out of town. That would be my luck! And - this whole process will be slow even if I do get the call. I would have to go for an interview (give a job seminar) and then get offered the job. Then - it would take me about a month or 2 to wrap up my projects here and then I would move. I would love to get out of here before they defoliate the cotton. Aack! They need to make a Bill the Cat smiley.

I managed to avoid the dating scene in a most unexpected way. My first date about a month after the separation was with a teacher I work with. I went to the staff xmas party as his date on a lark. Turns out we hit it off in a most amazing way. It's surprising how little you can know about someone you work with. Neither of us had ever thought about one another "in that way," and in fact, we've known each other as neighbours, our kids went to school together etc, for over 15 years. So, he was my friend before he was the love of my life. Two years later, we're still together, planning to get married eventually. I'm in no rush other than that it's kind of weird since we still both teach at the same school and everyone now knows we're together... Being legally married might make things a bit more "comfortable." Anyway, I certainly don't envy you having to play the field again. Some of the stories my single friends have told me make me shudder. The online thing is an entirely new angle that wasn't there when I was last single...
