Yeah, mimi, it's the wacky unpredictability of it all that gets to you. Last Sun-Mon I worked 26 hr straight through with one 90 min nap. I was grateful for the nap. It's the advantage of working nights; I do get to sleep when it's quiet.
A new bike and a Bianchi? Wow! Somebody looooves you! Maybe making up for his goof the other day? :D
Salsa--are you, DH, and cats out of hotel living yet? I swear, one more screw up, and I'll come help you kill the contractors! We all will...and Kit can hide the bodies. I know she's up to the task... :p
wow, 26 hours straight? after 26 hours, could you even tell the boy babies from the girl babies?
Well, you nailed it Lise, I put up with the BS because all the good stuff keeps coming through... we both take care of each other in 100 ways. I put up with having to babysit his mother who has alzheimers while he went on a 50 mile bike ride, and he sends me to Calabria to visit my favorite place in the world.
We just keep doing good things to each other, and in the end, it works out nicely...
Salsa is NOT out of the "doghouse" so to speak. The contractors aren't done yet. They really seem to be poor time managers.

Mmmmm. Biscotti. I have been living off SK's biscotti for the last week. Triple chocolate with Scharffenberger and some wonderful lighty anise-y white one that the PP "helped" make. (SK showed her how to separate eggs and now she's all full of herself. )

Mmm, biscotti.
BF called to tell me that the local sporting goods store didn't have the pink Mountain Hardwear shirt I asked for two Valentines Days ago...
So he says "I think I'm going to have to get you another snake."
Please be true, please be true!
This is the first Christmas I haven't bought anything using a credit card since I was five.
I'm pretty bored/lonely today. I am going to see Apocalyptica.

You guys are SO funny. I think we should have an entire gang of TD cycle chicks show up at the contractor's office, looking menacing. That alone would be enough to make me happy just now. They actually do very good work, always pass their inspections, etc. From what everyone tells me, some delays and some overruns are totally normal. The real problem is his complete inability to communicate. We've said a million times, we know delays happen and remodels uncover unexpected problems--JUST DON'T SURPRISE US. PICK UP THE PHONE AND LET US KNOW. And no matter how many times we've said it, he seems to be utterly incapable of doing it. That's the thing that is really infuriating. But enough of him for now, although the vision of a half dozen or so of us in his office, in cycling clothes and surrounding him with bikes and glaring, ready to collectively beat his brains out, is giving me considerable amusement (simple things amuse the simple-minded, my beloved fifth grade teacher used to say).
I'm flying home tomorrow at 6 am. Lise, I expect we'll be in the hotel all week, although the cats can go back to the boarding place Wednesday.
CWR, welcome back home to TD. Looking forward to hearing about the trip and seeing pictures.
MP, I used your hug--it wore well. Thank you.
Nanci, I also do not think Dave Chapelle is funny, so you're not alone. The baby alligator clip is great! And Krusty is beautiful. Their shell patterns are amazingly gorgeous.
My, I think Fluffy is a ideal name for a python. And I think it's GREAT that Raleighdon wants to buy you a new bike (by the way, it's clear he's a very good guy, and I don't mean just because of the new bike idea)---I still think you could have a bike that is a better size for you.
Looking forward to upcoming TD/TE visitors. Very cool.

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all got loads of bike goodies. Hope you have a safe and happy holiday spent with your loved ones and various good friends. :)
Hey, Nanci! Here's one just for you and for the rest of us who have to work this day. May it be a peaceful one. For so many reasons...
An X-ray X-mas
By J. David Baker, RT
'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through X-ray
Not a patient remained at the close of the day.
Lead aprons were hung on their racks with care,
In hopes there would be no more BE's with air.
All exams were complete, jackets pulled from the files,
And the finished film studies were stacked in neat piles.
The workload had just settled down to be light,
An encouraging sign of a coming slow night.
So, the visions were bright, like our Christmas tree star,
Even though Dr. Callem was still in ER.
After putting clean linen on all the rooms' shelves,
I was stocking the film bin with new ten-by-twelves,
When out in the waiting room rose such a roar,
I sprang from the darkroom, tore open the door.
But my wondering eyes could do nothing but stare
At a "jolly" old elf in a little wheelchair
As he whistled, and shouted, and yelled to the hall,
"Now, Pixel! now, Fixer! on, Duty! on, Call!"
His eyeballs - how bloodshot! his nose-tip - how red!
I could tell he'd pass out in a while, as if dead.
His luggage was loaded, also, with his gifts
For each x-ray tech on all of the shifts.
With a wink and a finger held up to his lips,
He unpacked some barium and enema tips.
Then he opened a box of contrast for CT
And set eight tiny nipple-markers under the tree.
I was paging Security, but he worked with such dash
That, before I could stop him, he'd flown in a flash.
As he rolled down the hall, he called out in apology,
"Merry Christmas to all - most of all, Radiology!"
Love to you all,
X. :) :D

Merry Christmas Eve everyone!!
DS pulled a cute one last night. He was giving his dad, DH a book. Hard to wrap a book so it looks like anything other than ... a book. So he wrapped one of DH's own books and put the new one on the shelf where the old one had been. DH gets his own book, chuckles overbearingly, turns to put it back on the shelf and finds the new one. It worked. :)

I don't suspect present unwrapping will happen today... xgf is at her parents' this morning and going directly to work... but that's ok. Honestly, I feel like I've gotten more than I knew to ask for (funny how there are things you need in life, but id doesn't occur to you to ask) already... tangibles aren't terribly necessary.
Home with the Outlaws after a cozy night last night watching movies and having a non-traditional dinner (miang kum salad, anyone?) has been wonderful.

My Christmas Eve Dinner Adventure
aka: Top Chef Ain't Got Nuthin' on Me!
We have our big family celebration on Christmas Eve, I cook a huge dinner. This year it was a turkey breast, prime rib, roasted sweet potatoes, smashed Yukon gold potatoes, sautéed summer squash with cherry tomatoes, and dinner rolls. Not to mention the pecan pie, pumpkin pie, chocolate spice yule log, magic bars and fudge.
So, I start cooking about 11:00 - all is going smoothly. I purposely do not put the sweet potato peelings down the garbage disposer. Potato peels seem to block up the sink. After prepping the squash to cook later, I run the disposal - for the third time. Just as my mother comes in to say "run the water for a long time, that will help clear everything" stuff starts bubbling up in the second sink (we have a double sink). The sink is backed up.
I crawl underneath to undo the elbow pipe, hoping that's all I need to clean out. I can't get one of the pipe ring thingys loose, and end up tightening it. Enter superman - aka Dad. He can't get it loose either. After about an hour and a half of him trying everything known to man, he cuts the pipe, then heads to Orchard Supply for new one. During all this I'm still cooking and prepping. My niece is scrubbing potatoes in the bathroom sink, dirty pots and pans are put in the laundry tub. Dad is gone for a good 2 hours. He gets back, and discovers he has the wrong pipe. Off he goes, back to OSH....I start getting everything ready to serve.
I might add, while we are cooking, we are also drinking Champagne. :D
Poor dad gets back, and looks whipped. I tell him to forget it for now; my brother has emptied the water in the sink using a large bucket. Tell dad to relax, have some champagne. Carve the turkey, carve the prime rib, get everything in serving bowls, pour the wine. Dinner is served!
All without benefit of a kitchen sink. I shall now refer to this night as my Holiday Top Chef Challenge.
Next year I cook dinner without benefit of a stove!
Nah, maybe not....
Oh - this morning the pipes are back on, we've snaked them a couple of times (eww, gross) Now to do all the dishes from last night.

I was walking down the hall this morning. In one place the carpet felt wet. I thought it was from BF taking a shower. Although I didn't know why the hall at the opposite end of the house would have a wet footprint. This afternoon, it's still wet. I investigate. The whole carpet is wet and the wall is soft. Great. Rain is leaking in around both my front windows, now.

Ohmygosh! Murphy's Law strikes again, and again, and again! You poor ladies! Hopefully, you'll get things fixed up and these will become adventure stories for generations to come. Ours this year was during clean-up from our weekend-before-Thanksgiving dinner. I was just putting the last dish of leftovers into the fridge when an alarm goes off behind me. It's the electrical short alarm. But everything seems to be working fine. Fridge is cold, compressor not running hard. Oven is off. Coffeemaker off. Nothing running but the ... dishwasher! And it's leaking all over the floor! We spent half an hour mopping it up, and then a week shopping for a replacement. My Mom's big holiday dinner adventures were (1) the first Thanksgiving in the new house when we didn't have an oven yet because of a steel strike. The turkey and pies had to be driven down one driveway and up the next to the old house, but when Dad drove the turkey over there Mom forgot to send the pumpkin pies. In fact, she filled them before she remembered, then had to walk them across the field and jump the creek with them, one on each hand. (2) The time we were expecting guests who would only eat their roast beef well done, whereas we all liked it medium rare. To get it just right she was using a thermometer, so the ends would be well done and the center medium rare. But as the tied-up rottisery beef cooked, it loosened a bit and the mercury thermometer started hitting against the top of the oven as the rotissery turned ... until it broke! Well, can't eat mercury-poisoned beef! Meanwhile, Mom was out shopping for last-minute ingredients. We kids called all over til we found a shop she was going to where she hadn't been yet. They gave her the message and she called back with instructions to throw out the beef and defrost a packet of steaks. She gets home, puts the steaks on the grill. They're done and the guests are ... late? But they weren't usually late. Mom checks the calendar. The guests were coming the next day.
p.s. X-rayted: Love the rewrite! Ok if I take a print-out to the New Year's party at the neighbors'? One of the usual guests is a radiologist.

Can I just WHINE???
I am so hungry- waiting for BF to get home so we can go to friends for dinner. I'm at that stage where I am starting to shake and sweat.
My second favorite snake has started biting. Zee. Mr. Perfect Birthday Snake. Not like he's afraid- like he's going to eat me? Why? I am afraid of him, because he is venomous. Nice. Is he smelling soap and thinking I am oging to feed him???
BF gave me Christmas Snake money, and likely friend who gave me Birthday Snake habitat money is giving me the same for Christmas, but I can't even get excited because I am so depressed about Zee.
My house is going to melt away.

Snap - so glad the dinner went off without a hitch. :p Here's a thought for the future, just in case... I have an S.O who insists on putting things down the disposal that don't belong there. Constantly backing up the pipes. So, I went to Home Depot and bought a replacement piece that is rubber and is held at each end by a hose clamp. Now I can remove the piece very easily with a screwdriver and snake away without having to cut or de-solder anything. Because of where I placed it, I can go back towards the sink or forward towards the main without a hassle. No leaks after 7 years in there. Plenty of snaking though. :(
Duck - sure, print it out and take it along. I happened across that rendition last year while I was a student. Hope he likes it.
Nanci - sorry to hear about the leak. Don't be too hard on Zee, he's just acting like the snake he was born to be. Don't go around cramping his style now. Just keep the local poison control number handy. :o

well, it's almost over. M-i-L went to her granddaughter's for one night.
She'll be back with us tonight, and then is leaving via bus or one of my sons tomorrow depending on whether it is snowing in the mountain passes or not.
Having her around is tough. She has alzheimers. She used to be difficult for me to be around but now add no short term memory to that.
We have to follow her around and open doors that she's shut and shut other door so she doesn't get lost.
At least 2 times each evening she loses her room, and that includes midnight of
christmas eve where she went up and down the hall (right next to my bedroom) and opened and shut the noisy sliding door to the closet about 10 times. DH slept blissfully through that one. I finally got up and discovered she'd misplaced her purse again. I told her to go to bed, we'd find it in the morning.
DH made her santa claus which means she had to hand out the presents.
I think it broke my kids' hearts because she forgot who is who and was trying very hard to get clues from our faces before handing out the gifts because she wasn't sure who they were for.
So today will be very peaceful and quiet. No "can I help" 5 times a minute and poor m-i-l standing in the kitchen in the way of everything. "Did I give you my refrigerator cookier recipe? " (being in the kitchen makes her think of this one and she says it almost every time she walks into the kitchen) She can wash dishes though.
Well, i see Kit has an xgf now. I hope it wasnt a traumatic break up.
Nanci's house doesn't sound so good. Particularly since she's in Hurricane country. Do you own the house? For now you can cover the whole thing with plastic on the outside and put a heater on the inside wall to dry it out.
I love Snap's christmas story. Those are the kinds of Christmases that stand out in your memory..
so CWR, how are your feet?

Mimi-- This time of year, it could've been incredibly traumatic, but my "big sisters" have been helping me out so much... and there really aren't words to describe my gratitude. It's still sorta rough here and there, but nothing like it 'could' be.
Why am I up? It's 6:49. My alarm goes off at 6:40 but it has been turned off... yet here I am, up and posting. geez. I think my ohio trip just 'set' me in the EST timezone! I who used to be nocturnal!
Going shopping today for household necessities, going to the bank, escaping to the local wifi coffee shop, and doing my best to stay on the right track. yay, yay.
Chica- I think today it's your turn to watch me...

Mimi,
My heart goes out to your family AND to your MIL, dealing with the heartbreak of Alzheimer's. It's such a backwards awful thing one one's mind goes before one's body, and one is still fully mobile. I can't imagine how awful it would be to be in a constant state of confusion and feeling like a burden to everyone. I guess it's a blessing that they continue to forget about the confusions of the hours before. Sounds like you did your very best to make her stay as comfortable and non-traumatic for her as possible. It's hard to dig deep to find the endless patience needed for this. At least she is not living with you- that would be so incredibly difficult- a fulltime caretaker job.
This was my first Xmas without my mother, and much as I miss her terribly, it was comforting that it was a "good" departure and I was able to make it peaceful and loving for her all through the end.
You can relax again soon when MIL goes home, knowing that you did a GREAT job giving her as nice a Xmas as was possible. Happy that you have a loving and appreciative partner too. One of the special things about the holiday is the good feeling of going the extra mile for each other and others in your life. :o

Not to dwell on misery, but my father had it too, and he had it for almost 20 years...
MIL lives with DH's brother. the strangest thing. He was always a totally selfish AH. Now he is taking care of his mother and cooking all meals for his aunt and uncle (uncle is dying) every day. Although his kids have disowned him, he's turned over a new leaf. It's the strangest thing.
Oh kit, join the rest of us early birds.. :) I am glad that your TE TD sisters are helping you out. That's pretty cool.

Mimi - my grandmother was the same way. When she'd visit, she would pack to go home just about every day. We would hide her suitcase, so she'd pack her purse. She never quite remembered where she lived - sometimes she was going home to Van Nuys, other times Leisure World. I don't think she ever announce she was going home to Moscow, Idaho - where my dad grew up. ;) It's sad, but you gotta smile or you'll be overwhelmed.
My aunt is in the early stages of Alzheimer's now, but seems to be doing well. She lives in an assisted living place, and is on some meds that seem to help. She's even got a boyfriend!:D She and mom talk on the phone once a week (Aunt Dorothy live in Richland Washington).
CWR - belated welcome home!
Kit - I'm proud of your strength; and glad to know you've got your TE sisters to watch out for you. You should think about coming down for Cinderella.
Trek and Knot - wondered when you two would "come out" publicly!:D
I'm convinced men have a stubborn gene. Dad is still fussing with the sink - I'm about to call Rescue Rooter. Don't like washing dishes in the laundry tub!!

Snap, there is plenty of funny stuff with people that have alzheimers.
At dinner, one of my mother's guests (who doesn't know my MIL) asked her
how old she was. MIL said she was in her 60's. the guest, knowing my DH was 56 more or less said B U L L S H I T. we all cracked up, what else can you do?
but then MIL fortunately remembered her birth year, and said "Well, i was born in 1926, you figure it out" and so everyone applauded her for being 80 "a toast, a toast to being 80"
Or when she said to me, " did this used to be grandpa B's house ?" (someone who died in 1950)
My response; "but didn't he live in Oregon? " "oh yes" was her response. She doesn't know what state we're in but makes for conversation.

Hi crew, I've been quietly watching this thread for a while, but as I don't know any of you I haven't felt a need to contribute. But Ihave to say, I've laughed pretty loud, to the point where my DH comes to see what's so funny.
Anyway, this is a topic that I can comment on. Unfortunately, I have had the luck to deal with many people in my work and my family with various forms of dementia, Alz included. And I have a lot of really funny stories. Because you have to have a lot of really funny stories. There is nothing worse than looking at someone you knew well and loved, seeing the same face, talking to them and expected them to answer and then realizing when they respond that the person they were is long gone. My heart goes out to all of you dealing with this type of disease.
OK - funny story. I used to get phone calls, (pre-caller ID), we'd answer and no one there but you could always hear a radio or TV in the background and whoever it was wouldn't hang up. Finally one night I got the idea that maybe my grandma had fallen and that she was trying to call me for help, maybe only able to reach the quick dial and lying helplessly on her floor. So I hung up and Called Grandma back, busy. Called again, busy... So over to grandma's I went. She was fine, watching the hockey game but her phone was off the hook and she had no idea why. So I hit redial and sure enough it was my house. She denied calling me and said I was crazy. So when I got home, I called Dad. He laughed uproarously. Apparently my quick dial number on her phone was the same as the channel number for the local hockey coverage on TV and she was getting her cordless phone confused with the remote control!!
My advice, laugh as often as you can at these things, even if others think you're insensitive, it's the only way to keep your spirits up.

That was Trek's idea. Ain't she sweet? I figured most people who had any interest had already figured it out anyway.
I was at my Mom's for the weekend, so didn't see her post until I got back last night. (or I would've responded sooner):D

Snap - oh yeah, Kit is coming down for the Cinderella. I've given her no choice, no excuses. :p So, now all we need to do is have a contest to see what she is going to be wearing... How's about butch-mountain-girl-biker-chick? :D And yes, Kit, you do have to wear the tiara! (Jen says so.)
Knot - I repeat my earlier sentiments. Aren't you two just the cutest!
CWR - Hey woman! Welcome back to the land of TD. I missed you. How's about we chat tonight if you have time? I need to talk to you about something. :)
BMo3 - Hope you get to feeling better today. You're in my thoughts, hon. (((Jen)))
Arrgh! The day after the holiday sucks! Everyone moaning that they have to work. Cry babies. I'm always just glad that it's not me lying on the litter getting xrayed. Some people's kids....

Yes, I do believe you when you say you watched her all night but somehow she still managed to shake you by stuffing pillows under the blanket and sneaking out. Now she's on the loose somewhere (God knows where) and the public isn't quite safe. Great story, Wahine! Your story is a perfect illustration of dementia. The fact of the matter is, even if she had tried to call you, she might not have remembered two minutes later.
CWR, glad you are having 1 foot done at a time. It would be awful if you needed to get somewhere and could only drag yourself along by your arms!

Uh...no. I think such a surprise would be a nice treat for him.
So yesterday....hahahahaha. I--not much of a crier--managed to cry in two different airports yesterday. Didn't sleep the night before, had to get up at 3:30 am anyway to make 6 am flight out of Albany. Northwest Airlines was having a sickout on Christmas Day. I made it from Albany to Detroit. All Detroit-Seattle flights were canceled. They rebooked me through San Francisco. The San Francisco-Seattle flight was cancelled. The next one did go. I got home at 8:20 pm (instead of 11:30 am). We waited till 10 pm for my bag. Not yet found. Hohoho! We're going out to find breakfast now. Hahahahaha, hohoho!

It's a long'ish story but some years ago Julia Child had a special on PBS called culinary highlights of Norway.
So I set of the VCR to tape it.
It was a hoot!!
There was Julia on mountaintops, stave churches, in the snow, tops of fjords, cross country skis...being shown dish after dish and it all featured "salmon! in a way I've never had it before!!"
The last scene she's at an outdoor BBQ, the fish is wrapped in aluminum foil. The chef wraps and wraps and wraps and .... runs out of foil goes to get another industrial size roll and wraps and ... Julia quiped that she hopes he owns stock in the aluminum co...then the fish is done and they open it up...
"salmon! in a way I've never had it before!!"
yes, strange sense of humor in my family

Hey TD! Made it there and back to the coast without too much trouble. Managed to spend 3 nights with my semi-disfunctional family and not kill anyone. Ate way too much. Drank too much. Now I need some R&R. My darling daughter is coming over for dinner tomorrow night and then she's heading back home to Vancouver so I'm really looking forward to spending an evening with her.
Did anyone get any biking stuff for Xmas? I bought my son a beautiful Giant Rincon MTBike for Xmas. He also got a new helmet, gloves, and a camelbak from his grandma. He has no idea how lucky he is... My mom gave me some money so I may buy something fun, or I may be smart and save it for Europe.
Well I'm off to read all the pages I missed.
Glad to see you're back CWR. Hope you had a good trip!
Happy Boxing Day everyone!

Thank you, Trek, for the Julia Child story! I can just hear her now...:D
Snap--you and your family continue to impress me, but I *do not* want your dad coming near my sink...:p
We're getting my mom a computer with all the trimmings for her b'day/Christmas/Mother's Day present. ("We" being my brother, sister, and their spouses) She's retired from the library, so needs a 'puter at home for emailing. My BIL, a softwear engineer, researched it well. Then, through a series of stuff, they couldn't use their credit card to order it. So he printed out this long sheet of instructions for me to order it online. I called him at 10:30, the night before they're leaving to go to Israel for 2 weeks, and went over the whole thing with him. Then he said..."Or you could just give me your credit card number". Sheesh! It's an elaborate exchange of checks between us, anyways, so if they'd just said, "Lise! Give us your credit card #", it would have spared me a day of anxiety, in which I was certain I was going to screw up the order!   I'm a goof. So it's all squared away, and Mom will get her computer for the new year. Yay!
J/I/my family/his daughter all had a very nice Christmas. We came together in various combinations over the 24th and 25th. J. and I got Christmas morning and early afternoon to ourselves, which was so nice. Fun times with family on either side. Now he and his daughter are off skiing for a couple of days. Among the presents he gave me are a framed poster of the swim start at Kona, and a Triathlon Life calendar! Now there's a little motivation to get my laaaazy butt back out there and start running again! Not to mention the pool at the Y....  .
I was going to run in the AM, but I'm not doing my usual night shift tomorrow, so I think I'll come home and run after work, instead. It's dark AM or PM this time of year! I'll run in well-lit areas. I love the "I'm a bum" thread, in which folks haven't run for ~gasp~ a week! I, who haven't run for ~ ~ over a month....:o ...well, I've got to get started again sometime. Off to bed--sleep tight, TD!

I can't believe I managed to gain 2.5 lbs since last Friday. Did I really eat 3500 X 2.5 = 8750 extra calories? No way. Maybe 3500 but that's it.
It was snowing when I got home last night - woke up to at least 8" of fresh white stuff this morning. So nice after the very wet, green Christmas in Vancouver. (I'm Mimi and the PNW gals can attest to that.)
So I've been busy catching up - you ladies are too funny. Dh keeps looking over here to see what I'm laughing out loud all the time. Never mind, it's nothing... :)

LOVE the ADHD joke Kits. Will remember that one for sure. What do you think would happen if I tried my kid's ritalin? Anyone done it recreationally? I want to understand what he's taking. Wonder what it does to people who aren't adhd. Well, I guess I am HD, not but not AD.

Recreational Ritalin is supposed to be much like Dexadrine and other attention-span-increasers. Expect it to act much like a strong stimulant but (according to sis) not with the 'icky, druggy feeling' of caffeine. Your method of uptake is up to you. Ingestion vs inhalation, really. Results may vary. Duration and intensity are up to method of uptake, ranging from three or four hours (very intense) up to twelve with a longer, lower arc of action. Your personal sensitivity will also vary. If you're ADHD, the dose may not even affect you that way. You may just feel 'more normal'. If not, expect the above.
Personally, I would not recommend it. Just have a coffee.
And a red bull.
And pop a couple Ginseng/Ginkgo pills.
at that point you should be experiencing the same feeling AND be vibrating too much to care :D
kelownagirl
12-27-2006, 08:44 AM
Hmmm, probably not a good idea for me at all then. I can't drink two cups of coffee without getting heart palpatations.
Kitsune06
12-27-2006, 08:51 AM
For concentration etc, I'd recommend Ginkgo and grape seed extract most, I think. Anyone else have any suggestions? Those are the two I know (and take them with Grapefruit juice) because I have serious, serious attention problems at work. (I say as I post from work, and IM, and...)
kelownagirl
12-27-2006, 09:00 AM
I'm not so much concerned about increasing my concentration as I am finding out what it's like for my kid to take ritalin. At the same time, I know that it has a much different affect on a person with adhd than it does on a "regular" person. I've talked to my daughter about it and she says she does not get the "caffeine-like" reaction like she does if she has too much coffee / red bull etc. And with my son, it clearly does not "wire" him, instead it makes him act calm, rational, and "normal". Weird....

I'm not sure what frightens me more- the idea that people can't think of an outrageous rumor about me, or the idea that people could try to think of something but then rethink it b/c it may well be true
oh and some fun (http://www.springmanrecords.com/springman/mp3/Jason_Webley-Drinking_Song.mp3) because it just struck me today. Jason has you stand up, point your finger, look at that finger, and spin in circles. Hi all
I recommend that you don't go away on vacation or get away from the computer if you want to keep up with the Thread! It is just too much
The trip to Tucson went great - got to ride in the really nice weather (60-70's) Yahoo that was really nice after the cold icy snowy weather we've been getting.
The parents are doing great in their new house - starting to hang things on the walls and it is looking like their house now. The sis's house is always nice - they just got it painted inside so it is really nice now. You should see this pumpkin colored wall in her kitchen - it is BEAUtiful! It is more like the color of pumpkin pie than the color of the outside of a pumpkin
I've figured out that I really don't like traditional christmas food anymore, (whipped cream egg nog, prime rib); but I more than made up for it by drinking some really nice red wine. Klinker Brick Old Vine and Cline ancient old vine zins - oh they were yummy! Drank too much, but I had company!
We picked up our new toilet (dual buttons) flush (they come from Australia). Really well designed and water efficient. Leave it to the Aussies - the Americans are just too far behind the eight ball when it comes to conservation!
Wish me luck tonight. Hubby and I will try to remove the very large mirror from the wall in the (being) remodeled bathroom so that we can install the new countertop! Yikes, it looks daunting!
Work is incredibly boring today! I just need to go home

Hot tubs are not toys. Cookies are not submersible. etc etc... the little facts of life. ;)
BMo3- Popularity is a fun thing to play with. If you let it sit long enough, it fades (thank god) if you want it badly enough you won't get the right kind, and whatever, blah blah so and so. :D you can have mine if you want it. I'm too popular for my own good. :D

Hi, TE TD, long time!! I got lost......... lost in the real world. Had too many hours at work w/ holiday parties. Tried to find time at home, too. Had 29th wedding anniversary and overnight trip out of town. Had computer that drove me crazy till #3 son got it working again. Plus the holidays. Something had to give. Hope you are all well! No emergencies.
Sounds like there were some great vacations/visits going on! A new happy pairing/couple!!?? Cool!! Friendships cemented and maintained. It continuously amazes me, this online community that encourages and nurtures connections between people that would have probably had no chance of meeting otherwise. We live in a continuously expanding world, don't we......

Shrink, shrink, shrink!
Poor SKnot is in that in-between stage: Boys size jeans are too small, mens size jeans are too big, and "student" size jeans aren't long enough.
So I got him a pair of men's shrink-to-fit Levi 501's in the smallest size I could find and I'm shrinking them with reckless abandon. (Darn men's jeans cost 2x what the boys jeans cost! Pooey!)
Are we allowed to dress our growing like a weed teenage boys in burlap bags?

Gaaa! SKnot tried on the Levis 501's, even though I've only run 'em through the shrink process 2x not 3x yet. They FIT!!!! They look super-baggy on his little butt, but they stayed up without a belt and though the legs were long, they weren't too long or so long I'd need to hem them.
OMG!!!! My little shrimp is wearing 30w 34L jeans! (Mind you, with shrinkage those old-fashioned 501's are probably more like 28w 32L)

Good morning all you lovely ladies. Haven't told DH about the raincoat order (i did tell him that I didn't want a burley raincoat and that I wanted to have a waterproof raincoat) Is that really too much to ask? He made a face, he thinks i should keep wearing the one that i have until the stitching on the shoulders comes unravelled. He is so penny wise and pound foolish!
We're going to Seaside Oregon for the weekend and new years with his bike club. How fun will it be when my package from TE arrives with my new raincoat inside AT the hotel (in his name no less) and I get to open it in front of all his well-heeled bike club friends. How else could I even consider riding this weekend?

How old is S-knot? Baby bear (duckling II) shot up 4" at 17. Went through 3 sets of clothes the one year I was "single-parenting" (had him with me on sabbatical). And we thought he was done after about 3" each of the two previous years. I guess it's a guy thing, that long growth spurt at puberty.

I'm not gonna be able to call him "Small Knot" for much longer... sigh. He's 13. His father grew 8 inches in one year (at age 13) and so far SKnot has grown about 3 or 4 since his last birthday. And a couple weeks ago his voice started to crack.
He'll be a tall one, lots of over-six-footers in both sides of his family. He's already up to my eyebrows, so I'm guessing he's about 5'6". I should measure him again.

He's already almost as tall as my older sprout. He'll leave them in the dust.
My family and my husband's family specialize in folks under 5'2" so I was quite relieved when my sons made it to 5'6" and 5'9"!!

At 15 baby bear grew 1cm and went through his change of voice all in one week ... while I was away at a conference. I missed all the cracking and swooping and squeeking. I said goodbye to him eyeball to eyeball (5.9") in soprano, and felt my neck click backwards when he said welcome home as a baritone. Until then he'd been among the shortest boys in his class. He's now 6' 6.5" and hopefully done at last. Be prepared to watch S-knot soar upwards. The clothes size surprises sound like an early warning of a growth spurt that may last several years.

Try Kohl's (no affiliation other than I spend too much money there). I never pay more than $18 for jeans for the guys. All my guys wear slims and it does get tricky when they keep growing taller. My oldest is 5'8 now and still fits in the "juniors" section of Urban Pipeline (Kohl's) and Levis 550 Student.
Best of luck jean shopping.

Hi, ladies. I haven't been around much because I am too tired to ride very often these days, but I thought I'd check in here and see how everyone is doing.
Me, I am currently eight and a half weeks pregnant with twins. Not for long, they tell me: one of them has been faltering from the get-go and they think I'll probably lose that one, although it's hiding behind its sibling so we won't know for sure for a few more weeks. Either way my doctors are pretty confident that the other twin is fine and is unlikely to be affected by the loss of its sibling. And we will be very happy with one healthy baby.
In the meantime, I feel like I am pregnant with twins: I am sick and tired and sleeping twelve hours a day. I have no activity restrictions at the moment -- "exercise while you can," is what they told me -- which is good, because when I can drag myself out we have been doing a little mountain biking, and I narrowly avoided my first endo. Something to tell the kid after it arrives.

Congrats Xeney! I carried twins and was told neither would make it. They are both here and quite healthy. :) Did they doctors mention anything about TTTS? Congratulations Xeney! I don't know anything about twins but hopefully BMO3 can give you advice and support. Hugs from me and hugs to the little ones too. :)
I can attest to the overnight growth. My son keeps wanting me to measure him and for weeks, it's nothing, and then one day, he's grown another inch. I'm sure it happens overnight. Sometimes I think I'd like to measure him daily to see if that's true.
I managed to splash hot bacon fat on my chest this morning. Now I have several blisters right close to a pretty sensitive spot. Owie... :( Glad I'm not breast-feeding right now.

Thanks, everyone. Jennifer, they are in separate sacs so I was told that TTTS was not a concern. And right now Baby B's faltering is almost certainly due to chromosomal issues that can't be avoided or prevented, so they aren't even considering me high risk unless/until Baby B makes it to the ten-week mark. Right now they have this classed as a "vanishing twin," even though it hasn't vanished yet!

Me? I'm happy with my leather, but piercings, steel and big engines make me giddy, too. *sigh* I tell ya, half the time I feel like I'm a biker on the wrong sorta bike. So to speak.
But I can't go making Miz Cakes feel insecure. She's got all the engine she needs. :D
<mumble>Damm crazy women around here, anyway. And me without my chaps!</mumble>
well, Kit as for what kind of bike you really ought to be on, just look at the MOTORCYCLE bikers who are my age. Do you want to look like them or like us? The kind of bike you ride is going to keep your girlish/boyish figure a girlish/boyish figure . The other bike?? it's going to help you get bigger and bigger and bigger.

Oh, I appreciate my cycling, really. :) But cycling is not conducive to chaps etc. And it just looks wrong to wear my biker jacket on my er.... bike. ;)
I hate to say it, but it's generally biker guys who are... uh... less eye-friendly.
I wonder if my friend from Eugene is still on the d*kes on bikes site? C'mon, Mimi.... Dikes on bykes. :D
My resistance is futile.
Oh... 'ya saw it here first' once I get the carbs rebuilt on my '80 Honda CB650, I'm going to sell it. If you feel lucky, and are unafraid of a machine that's had my greasy paws on/in it...

It's true. Active cyclists, both men AND women, tend to look mean and lean after 40, whereas men AND women bikers over 40 seem in general to have large amounts of flab and pot bellies, etc. It gets worse in their 50's. I think it's all the beer.
My DH's brother is into motorcycles now- he sent us a website with photos of a large gathering of bikers he went to...all very friendly people mind you, a big "brotherhood" all having fun... but all the men and women were guzzling beer in every single picture, and almost everyone over 40 had major fat rolls (or else they looked scary-skinny and sickly). No one looked healthy except the 20 year olds- but when you're 20 it's easy to look healthy. ;) When you look at photos of bicyclist gatherings, it usually looks like a completely different scene altogether.
This is a generalization of course, but "most" bikers I see older than 40 look pretty flabby and in nowhere NEAR as in good shape as cyclists over 40.
Kitsune06
12-28-2006, 02:10 PM
It's all about minding how you live. I have a strong feeling that if you're careful about what you do, such generalizations are meaningless- the general public fits your description. It's like arguing that I shouldn't drive my car because it's being sedentary.
That's like saying all cyclists are whip-thin, wiry power plants with rippling calves of steel and thighs that kill well into their 50s... It's just not true. It's purely dependent on one's lifestyle. Yes, it's a different scene, but depending on my mood, sometimes the biker crowd suits more. Maybe I'd rather discuss the ins and outs and benefits of a DOHC vs. a SOHC... valve clearance or rejetting instead of how my clips are clipping or whether or not my shimano suits me better than your campy; whether my underarmor is better than wool...
But thanks, and I'll bear in mind that doing my SOMA job and then using a SOMA method of transportation may make me gain weight.
Oh, shush, you don't have to cross your fingers!

Kit- You could always try out the leather on your bike, a little experiment to see who you attract? :D I know one cyclist who is pretty easy on the eyes, but I keep him in my bed. :D :p
<<Shakes head>> Aparment managers, they are vile people I tell ya. Except for a dear friend who is one, but the rest are awful. Maybe I feel that way because I currently owe my last apartment $688 and it is part of my reason for not getting a new bike.

I don't generally 'do' bike gear. The most 'ecclectic' clothes I've ever worn biking were a suit, white gloves, tophat, cane (on the handlebars...) and long black leather trench coat. It was a dance we were headed to. *grins* Too much fun. Trench coats on bikes=not easy.

Oddly enough, victorian-era styling is coming back to a lot of things. 'retro' is extending much further than before. Cabaret is regaining popularity in the music scene. I've been forcing some of the music on my friends, with limited success. *shrug* not everyone's taste. Not sure what it is... but within the last couple of years I've seen 'cabaret' and 'burlesque' shows gaining much more popularity- punk kids with top hats, gloves and intricate tattoos... girls with perfect, white makeup, long stockings and silver Monroes.
Such an interesting subculture.

Individuality and creativity of dress are always a good thing. And often a source of amusement...
My DH likes to wear simple well made sort of old-fashioned wool and canvas and flannel stuff that never goes in OR out of fashion. Between that and his beard and his glasses, sometimes suspenders, he does look rather old fashioned. The other day someone said "Hey man, I like your 19th century working man look!". We looked at each other and burst out laughing- he doesn't think of it as a "look"- it's just normal "him"!
And me, when I'm not in my biking woolies and lycra- I have long dresses in soft natural flax cloth in earthy colors that I feel comfy in, and clogs and wool socks....I was eating breakfast once at the coffee shop counter and someone asked me if I was on my way to a Renaissance festival. I didn't quite know what to say, so I just said "Um, no...." and they looked mildly embarrassed.
I like it when people wear interesting clothes. I think the generic mall look is pretty boring.
Kitsune06
12-28-2006, 03:39 PM
I had a really nice black silk tie. *sigh* I gave away far too much when I moved. I love those kinds of stores where you can buy 'vintage' clothes...
I made quite the boyish cutie... unfortunately, xdh couldn't really approve. ;)
We had fun doing the SCA thing, too. We were the Oldhams, Scottish mercenaries, available for hire. I was *in love* with my chainmail shirt... I had the whole setup. tall leather boots (hand made...) the tartan, (just a skirt and brat, no kilt for the women.... *eyeroll*) linen shirt, leather pouches/belt, dagger, etc etc. Too much fun. My 'persona' was a pretty raunchy character, too. *grin* Still, I honestly don't miss messing with the wool kilt/skirt/etc. freakin' itchy.

Hello TD. I'm back home after a 4 day family visit to MIssouri. This was the first visit of FSIL (future son-in-law) to my parents house, so had to introduce him to the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. That's why we got stuck in an elevator compartment in the Gateway Arch for 5 minutes. My grandmother turned 95 yesterday (and my sister turned 52 the same day and I turn 51 in about an hour). Grandmother is doing really well for 95 and needing oxygen. My sister was demonstrating the use of yoga blocks, and my grandmother said "I think I can do that". She proceeded to hold the blocks and walk around the room on her feet and hands/blocks. She had some long hospitalizations/rehabs last year and we really thought we were going to lose her, but she's pulled through and keeps as active as she can. She claims she doesn't want to live to be 100, but has adopted reaching 96 as her next goal.

I sliced my thumb open and freaked myself out (SKnot stayed calm and got me paper towel, etc.). So, of course, I wrote a PM about my gushy icky thumb, sitting holding the nasty thing shut. Cuz I was still shaking and scared!
Poor honey called me immediatly asking if I needed to go to the ER. Aw, man, I shouldn't tell her these things! Especially when she's several hundred miles away and unable to do anything except panic!
Bad Knot, bad!

Deb, happy birthday! Your grandmother sounds great! My grandmother had that same pluck, but died of a lou gehrig's thing when she was ONLY 92.
Kewlona, I am so sorry your daughter has a boyfriend. I was sure that MY son would show her the error of her ways and she would turn into the perfect daughter. My son is the perfect codependent. And I have a BIG GIANT ZIT at the edge of my lip.
What is it with ZITS and gray hairs and wrinkles and a girly-moustache and sprouty beard hairs? It's not fair that we should get all of the above at the same time. There should be a limit. I'm too old for zits, fer gosh-sakes! And if I have to shave like my grandma did, then I shouldn't have to be shaving around ZITS.
Yeah, I might as well be home where I can't spread my zitty mood.;)

Real wood (not pressboard) kitchen cabinets!
Of course, then they'd raise my rent some more, cuz the apt would be so much nicer... not that they don't raise it by $40 a month every year anyway... poopy.
I could wear my Butch Island Girl outfit (minus the grass skirt and coconuts, so it'd just be Butch.) We could stomp around Homo Depot in our black leather steel-toed boots... yeah!

Uhm.... Sure :D No tips necessary. :D *shoots a look at X to "put those dollar bills back, missy"* 'Butch' is not an outfit but a lifestyle... ;) I've done my share of home improvement... floor laying, joist repair, insulation-laying, roofing, cement pouring, all manners of repair, drywall installation, window refinishing, etc.
*sigh* you just somehow reminded me that all my tools etc are in the shop, laying on and around "the bike". (!) along with my gloves (!) I'd completely forgotten. Huh. Well shazbat, I should probably put the pipes back on now that I *can* so I don't *lose* that stuff. And the chrome looks so much better now... :D *sigh* just hard to go out there and phutz with something like that all alone all night. I <3 shop work, but it's so much better to do that kind of stuff while shooting the sh*t with someone. And to think, I even managed to procure a big tub of molasses and still haven't done any work. Maybe I'll do *that* this weekend?
Oh, fwiw, molasses is a fantabulous rust remover.
... this has been a little peek into my stream-of-consciousness.... thank you

X, I could take pics for you. I'd charge a lot, of course. That's how I'd pay for the hardwood floors.... ;)
And for a Tomboy Femme like me, "Butch" is an outfit! :D
(but you know what they say, "Femme on the streets, butch in the sheets"....) (oops, I shouldn't've said that. But it's true.)

Pics? I don't know if you could charge *that* much for...
well you could.... but...
I... uh... I think I'm 'butch' both ways, but I do have a decidedly womanly figure. Thankfully!

Sitting around waiting for my sweetie to get home. She's driving home in the dark from her mom's, about 1 1/2 hrs. Said she'd call me when she got home.
Of course, she's 50 years old, so i dunno what the h*ll I'm worried about. She *does* know how to drive... Doesn't matter, I worry anyway.
Knot-trans-contintental-worry-wart
(grammar grinch question: is it "trans-contintental" if you are referring to north-south, or only if you are referring to east-west?)
Edit: anybody want to make guesses why her power-steering fluid leaks away and her steering whines like mad when the car is cold? (it's a '99 Alero) She just had the alternator replaced. Accessory belt, power steering pump, master cylinder, leaky hose? The whine makes me think its something before the master cylinder, but I don't know nothin' 'bout cars... so I'll just worry until I hear she got home ok.
Edit #2: ok, she's home. Worry over for the nonce.

Knot - leave it. :D Oh, and the car... sounds like the rack for the steering is going. They are expensive. Very much so. It won't go out of control, but it will become very hard to make turns and stuff. She'll be fine driving it home. But I would consider either getting it fixed ASAP or trade it in before it goes totally.

Now that Saddam is dead, can the US leave Iraq and my brother come home? In the last 4 years he's only been home a total of 6 months.
And why did we put Saddam into power in the first place all those years ago?

Funny, I was just wondering tonight how your vacation was going. How much time did you get in NZ? Did you have fun? And how was "The Queen"? Mirren is SO good.

Hey Salsa,
I always enjoy NZ...except the weather. It rained 80% of the time we were threre. We went to my fave cafe in Rotovegas called The Fat Dog :) , visited friends I haven't seen for almost 2yrs and found that some of the horrible Auckland motorway system has finally been improved. Even the infamous "bridge to nowhere"(kiwi ladies will understand) in the Waikato has been completed!!!! finally!!!
We also have two friends/couple seriously thinking of moving here from Auckland :) They have nothing to lose moving & Perth was one of the three places to choose from.(the others-INdonesia, Europe & Aussie-main reason is the gent(chris) is a diving instructor...)
Right..The Queen-Helen Mirren's awesome & I highly recommend the film. You may wish to take kleenex with you as the footage of the flowers etc after Diana's death is still quite sad for me. I remember where I was when she died & it's still sad seeing images of the outpouring of grief.
Ps-salsa i found a litte item for ya & will send it along with all the other items I need to send folks!!!

This may be a bit technical for you but my dvd drive recently died and I revived it by giving my laptop a good thump. This prompted it to recognise the drive as new hardware and re-install it. Worth a try:D

It was never about Saddam, it was always about the oil...and about some people making a LOT of money.

Yep. And now I guess it comes down to whether the new Dems in Congress have grown enough spine to stand up to Bush and his gang of war profiteers. Hang in there, Knot, Knot's brother, and all the other soldiers, families, and Iraqis waiting for this war to end. Let's hope it ends SOON!

What makes me wonder is this: if so many people in our country are so unhappy about what's happening over there, why can't we change it? Why are our voices seemingly unheard? Why can't our elected officials do what we elected them to do (represent us)? I know- that's a rhetorical question because of the games that are played in that big white building on capitol hill. I hope that with the change in power that we can start to make our exit- and focus on what's wrong with our own country. I hope the new dems have the backbone, and the pull, to turn this thing around.
Knot- even tho I'm against the reasons for us being there, I love our soldiers, support what they do and pray for them everyday. I hope that he (and they) can all come home very, very soon. We live in a military town, and I see the sadness of the war all around me. Let's bring those boys and girls home!!
Sorry so political... I live in a very "red" state and I'm a very "blue" person. I don't get to voice my opinion anywhere around here without great opposition and arguments. Thanks for letting me vent! :)

Even my brother questions our reasons for being there. He just does it very very quietly... Most of the guys have the same opinion we do, they just can't say anything.
And yes, there is a HUGE distinction between supporting the troops and supporting the way they are being used. They know that. We know that.
It's an ugly complicated situation our government has gotten into, and it's gonna be awfully hard to get out of it.
The president of this country has entirely too much power. Not entirely by constitutional design - more by congressional abdication. DoW is right, our congressmen need spine. I also think we need to impose real qualifications for presidential candidates - elections have been a poor way to pick. Maybe require at least 1 term in the senate so the candidates have a record on foreign policy. As it is, those with no record can get elected easier, since a voting record yields more negative advertising potential.
Knot, I really hope your brother and all the others can come home soon. Doesn't look good for now unless the Dems tighten the purse-strings.
It's precipitating here. I think it's a combination of snow and sleet - mostly sleet by the sound of it. About 31 degrees. Now it looks like graupel. Changing by the minute.
My weekend project: a bicycle cover for my daughter's bike. I didn't order the fabric until 3 days before xmas, so this is a late present. She gave me the bike measurements and the location of the lock (will leave a hole there).
