Mimi - I've never had chocolate dipped chestnuts. In fact, not sure I've ever eaten chestnuts at all. Should I be trying some?
To some people, chestnuts are an acquired taste. I've been eating them
(roasted) since i was tiny, and I love them. I went to Italy when I did so I could be there for the chestnut festival and I came back with slow-baked ones and raw ones.
They have a mild flavor and they are mealy when boiled, or crunchy when
baked.. Raw, (this is new for me too) they almost have an apple taste.
So anyway, sure, if you can get freshly roasted ones, do try them.
I like how they came out chocolate dipped, I will make more and give them as gifts to family who are not as fortunate as I, not having ever made it to
my grandfather's home town in Italy.
(and I am sure that is a lot more than you wanted to know!)

CC! Go get 'em, kid. Look forward to hearing about it. Nanci, you too.
Nanci, can you post a link to the Steve the Snake pics, or do I have to be a member of whatever site those are on? And has Addy kept that snake down? And, OH, POOR BIRD. I am so sorry about that.
I love roasted chestnuts passionately, could eat them every day if I could find them done right, and have never done it well enough at home---not as good as on the street in Geneva, Paris, or wherever. Mimi, any tips?
Yeah, Dar, it's a funny thing about that "getting inside myself" biz--for a while it's wonderful, and sometimes it tips over into being too far away...
Beeper is still doing pretty well. She does not enjoy the subQ fluid (now trying twice a week only), but then neither would I. Visited three assisted living places with Mom last week when back in Albany. She is also thinking about moving to an assisted living place out here, maybe later, which would be great, actually. Glad the ice is going away here...haven't been on a bike for a couple of weeks. Tired of living in the basement dungeon with air compressors and sawing and hammering over my head and sawdust falling into my hair and my computer. Blechh! Pitooey. But having my own weaving studio, new little laundry room, bigger living room, new master bedroom and bathroom, new little guest room, lots of new windows, AND that porch out into the side yard trees...if they ever really finish...will be great. Room enough for a TD party, even. Preferably in, say, August, since Seattle just broke its all-time monthly rainfall record.

Nanci - how's the mouse? Fingers crossed. Chew Addy Chew (I don't think snakes chew, right?). Also birds, I grew up on a chicken farm. Our chickens used to do that to each other.
I remember something about Dad flooding the area with red light so they saw everything as red and did not get transfixed on one area of blood. Since I was about 5 when my parents quit farming don't know if that's entirely correct.
Can birds, like dogs have those Elizabethan collars?
Mimi - chestnuts roasting on an open fire....
Knot - re Sknot loosing stuff. My sister travels a lot, and the system she learned quite young was to count what she carries.
Say she goes into a room with backpack, violin, camera.
So when she leaves she needs to have 3 things. In with 3, out with 3. And this "system" is what she uses with constant globe trotting travel.
Airlines loose things, not her.
Of course sometimes she gets up: setzer spritzer, pink flamingo sprinkler system and Edsel hood ornament....that's 3 things...but it's still 3 :p ;)

Addy is out and about in her vine- she gets up before it's light- and she appears fine. I searched her viv for a regurge, but didn't see anything.
I had some wonderful Choco time last night. I'd been so busy with the new kids, and Chocs had been so busy shedding, that I'd sort of forgotten why he is the perfect snake. He sat through two episodes of Grey's Anatomy- without squirming- and I put him back to do something, but he was still very active, so I took him out for a third episode! (I'm off today- so I was up till midnight)
**********************
They are trying a collar on Roy. I don't really understand why they don't just remove the leg up into his body so there is nothing exposed- like Dill had done- but the vet thinks he could still have phantom pain and eat his abdomen...Dill used to do a funny thing- he'd "scratch" his head with the leg that wasn't there. It's a lot easier for a pea-brained pigeon to deal with stuff like that than a smarter parrot. Dill did go through a horrible mutilaiton phase where he was picking the backs of his wings till he had these horrible scabby bleeding lumps. He did that for months- there was nothing to do to stop him except I could wrap him in a towel and then he couldn't do it. A parrot could just chew its way out. I don't know what to tell her. Thousands of dollars of vet bills- she's missed a car payment, her husband is working OT, she says she doesn't feel like interacting with husband or baby-
I told her just give him a week in the collar and see what happens. It sounds like the vet is going to just quit soon no matter what Kelly wants.

Nanci-so far so good with Addy. I hope the collar helps your daughter's bird. I am pleased to hear you and Choco had nice bonding time.
Well all who have snow enjoy it for me, please. It was 57 when I woke up to 50 mph wind gusts and we are under a tornado watch.

OTG & AG- I think we may have been passed by Bobby. We got buzzed real hard by a couple of guys on the way out if you recall. One with full CSC gear. Could've been, never know. It stuck in my head cuz that guy was in professional shape and amazing bike but was courteous to us at the same time when passing. I heard he's really cool and personable. Well, I've got his rearview tatooed in my head anyway, so that'll have to be good enough who ever he was. ;)
I want/need to go riding this w/e but it's supposed to get cold and nasty. Besides, I'm waiting for my hitch to come in for my Jeep. (got rid of the ragtop Sebring yesterday!) Will take a week to come in and then I can fit up the bike/kayak rack with my bro. I was measuring out the back of the Jeep last night in the garage to see how I can fit Sweet Pea in until then. I can make it work without too many parts being removed. Just tires I think.
I also want to go out to King of Prussia mall this w/e. Need stuff besides bike stuff. (yup, I said it) Looking a bit homeless these days. Some of my clothes are getting slightly baggy and ill-fitting looking. I know, it's a good thing right?! Still expensive tho. Gonna hit a few of my favorite local consignment shops first. Good thing I didn't have to put any out of pocket money on the Jeep yesterday.
AG - great link, that had me crying right away but good tears for once. I needed that kind of story last night. THANK YOU!
BMo3 - Thanks for the talk last night. I dropped into blissful sleep right after. Very calming night overall. They have been few and far between lately. Can't wait for things to get back to normal soon. Hope you're feeling better today with the flu thing. Remember the cool compresses at the back of the neck, etc... will cool your blood right down and make you feel better quicker. Easier on your nervous system than a cold shower or bath.
Kit - Hope you're driving today. Looks a bit icy there this morning. Sorry, can't help worrying about you.
Thanks for the short but sweet chat last night. (and no crying, wasn't that nice? :o  Making progress. Thanks. Love ya sis.)
CWR - Good luck with the doc today. Don't let him be a pu*s with those feet. Then get out there and enjoy that vacation. Have fun enough for all of us poor shmucks.
Well, I'm sorry I don't have time to address all I've missed. So here's the condensed version.
I hope...
*the snake keeps the mouse down
*L & J are still honeymoonin' and canoodling
*someone gets to SF real soon
*someone gets their chestnuts roasted the right way ;)
*the WA Ironman is the best ever
*mimi didn't burn her tongue on the double-boiler
ah lets see... um,
*HP beats Voldemort in the last book and marries Ginny
*Ron and Hermione get together too cuz they're just such a cute couple
*no dudes come in through xray today (or ever) wearing a kilt and no underwear
*the power stays on for KG this time
*BMo3 gets snow before she goes totally insane
*Dar finds a guy worthy of her
*those who have been absent for a while get to hang out a bit more with us, they've been missed
*I make it to the post office by tomorrow or Kit is gonna kill me soon :o
Ok, I think that's it. Take care and be safe. See ya in a few days. (or sooner I hope) So busy...
X.

I found out what happens if you forget about a bottle of wine in the freezer overnight...(The cork comes out with the foil still on!) Not as bad as one would think- but maybe I just got lucky.
I made a batch of my favorite pasta for my pre-ride breakfast and for after the ride to eat in the truck on the way home. Bowtie pasta, toss with butter, toss with parmesan cheese (lots!) throw in sun-dried tomatoes and capers- YUM!!
I had enough for a cup for lunch, too. Should have just made the whole box.
I also plan on having chocolate milk in the cooler, and Cape Cod Kettle Cooked chips. For after the ride.

'Morning all,
Salsa - glad to hear beeper is doing better. Good luck finding an assisted living for your mom. I'm marking my calandar for that party. I'm turning 40 in August if you'd like to make it a surprise, hint, hint;)
Mimi - quit talking roasted chestnuts - sounds yummy!
Jennifer - hope you're feeling better girl. The flu bug is no fun at all. And it's cold here now but the snow is a little too far south.
Nanci - good luck this weekend. I feel so bad for your daughter. I hope it turns out ok. Any ideas for a good red wine for my mom for Christmas? Not too dry, not too sweet?
X - not sure whats going on but ((hugs)) anyway. Have fun shopping and score on the jeep! I'm getting the car itch myself. I'm pushing 200,000 miles on my Accord and my windshield is starting to crack. Power window doesn't work in the cold, no heated seats are getting to me, etc:p I want to shop, just a little bit....
KG - trying a new crock pot recipe today?? Hope your power stays on girl.
I talked to my friends sister today. He had a bad day yesterday. His body was fighting the pain meds, kind of like an allergic reaction so he had a hard time breathing and the pain was aweful. They put him on oxygen and finally found a pain med that would work. He finally got a good nights sleep last night and he's off the oxygen. They pulled his chest tube this morning so that also helps him breath better. I would feel better if I could hear his voice but I know he needs his rest. I'm driving down tomorrow to see him. She thinks he'll be ready for visitors then. If not, she'll leave me a message. Please keep him in your prayers for me.
I found Atkins Endulge peanut butter wafers for $.10 each yesterday! They are past their expiration date but taste wonderful! I'm heading back to stock up:p
CC - enjoy the Ironman.
OTG - cool on meeting famous people. No such luck on this end.
Check back later Chicas!

Popping on. Commute today went well, but I suspect I either need to really clean and lube my drive train, or I might've bent the derailleur hanger in the crash. Ugh.
X- it wasn't icy. It was so warm that I was dyin' after 4 miles. mud, mud, mud 'n goo. Nice chat last night AND I think you'd totally love that movie. The effects are SO stop-motion-ish and the story so well-thought-out. loved it. I can't b*tch about the latness of gifts, how tacky, and I'm thankful anyway. :D thank you!
CWR- are you still alive? Haven't heard even a smartazz comment from you recently...
BMo3- I got your card yesterday! DGF was in tears laughing over it. Really struck a chord. thank you! I'm still thinking about a good xmas cartoon...

OMG that sounds like a terrible situation!! And all that money!!
Here's my humble suggestion: have her buy a little parakeet or cockatiel or lovebird and set it up in a cage right next to the parrot's cage. This will provide a HUGE distraction and lots of entertainment for the parrot, and will take his mind off picking at himself...and get the mirror in his cage! Mirrors work very well too. Do these two things- they are a lot cheaper and easier to try than missing car payments!
I used to raise birds...doves, finches, canaries. And I had an amazon parrot for years.

lisa, I sent her your note. The vet thinks they have the collar adjusted- but he has to stay for the weekend. Apparently one vet thought they should have put the collar on right away and left the at that time still remaining foot parts out in fresh air. The other vet didn't want to traumatize him with the collar, so bandaged it. And it didn't heal, and he had to have another amputation, and now he's chewing his foot off...Kelly sounded better, or at least resigned today.
I'm in a hotel with no power cord for my laptop- the one time I can get a conection...

me too. Bought two books on line and reserved two at the library.
I like to read while I cycle in the basement.
Snow report: We got about 4" down here. Started out very slushy, ended up fluffy. So it looks pretty, but it will be treacherous when the temps drop, as they will tonight. Ice underneath everything.
I went out and walked to do errands--every tree so beautifully coated with heavy snow. It's a good workout, including leaping over slushy puddles at every intersection. Now I'm making stew, and soon bisquits, to take up to J's for dinner. I'll spend tonight there, and he'll spend tomorrow night here.
My Mom is retiring as the head of the Children's Dept at a suburban library at age 71. Tomorrow's her retirement party. She went to library school after my dad died, in 1965. I remember her graduating when I was 8 years old. I've always respected her for that. And now she's at the end of this part of her career. She'll continue to work part time. I think she'll be very, very glad to be done with being an administrator.
B3/Jennifer, I hope you're feeling much better by this evening.
Nanci, have a great ride! I hope Roy can break the cycle, and that Lisa's tips help. That your daughter can get some rest, and connect with her baby and hubby again.
Dar, any progress on the FROG front? Have a good weekend! L.
While you all are snowed under in the midwest and northwest, we're having record warm temperatures here in the east. It's going to start cooling after tonights storm, and we may be some flakes on Monday. But it's been freaky warm the last 3 days. It's 65 right now.

Lise: I was thinking of you when the local news showed the snowfall in Chicago. Snow+new beau can be very romantic....in the meadow we will find a snowman...
BMo3: any snow out your way? I hope you're feeling better.
Deb: it was 72F here in Philly last night. I went night hiking with a friend and wore shorts and a sleeveless tee! Tonight, it's still warm, but you might blow away in the 50+wind gusts
I have a match date tonight. This one is a compter geek (he has a job!), runner (athletic!), and avid backpacker (my second love, next to cycling!). And the bonus is that he owns both a road bike and a MTB! I'm not getting my hopes up too much, but we've had some great conversations and he's taking me to dinner and a concert. Lise: congrats to your Mom. My Mom also went back to school for her Masters when I was a pup. I was (and am) very proud of her. She's long retired but still volunteers at the local library.
I forget who and where and what page someone wished I had "opened up a can of whoop a##" on the intruder I had Tuesday Night. Impressive and gratifying as that might have been I reflect that nothing I can learn will make me bullet proof  Knot hopes to sit in on a class and see me figure out my left foot from my right when next she's down this way.
I got the mutt a new doggie bed, the type that's bowl shaped. I'd read they make dogs feel "more secure" not that the mutt is insecure or anything. Right now she thinks it's one giant squeekie toy and is playing with it. Her previous beds all the "big pillow" style.
Hope she figures out it's a bed

I hope it goes well for you. *crosses fingers really hard* I talked to Roy at your LBS and asked him what he thought, and I am going to get the new gearing tomorrow after all. Even thought I might be able to achieve a higher HR with the old gearing, it makes sense to base my training zones on what I'll be training with.
Lise: That's amazing re: your mom. Sounds like a wonderful woman.
In other news ...
I didn't buy any diet, caffeine-free soda at the grocery store tonight, so I'm officially trying to give that up, too. I only have 1-2 cans a day, but it's going to be a lot harder to give that up for me than caffeine. I bought some caffeine-free green tea. :)
I'm so glad it's Friday, but it was a loooong day at work. So tonight I'm looking forward to just tidying up a bit and kicking off my shoes and relaxing with some tea.

hello everyone. just a quick update before i head out for vacation.
went to the foot dr today. love the dr. she is super nice. though she wanted to do one foot then the other. i played the "i live in the bush and its hard to get to town card" so she agreed to do both feet at the same time. i had to promise i would stay off them for no less than 2-3 weeks or more. that means hello wheel chair. i rather be put up for a few weeks than 6-8 months. i'm ok with this, now. she said its going to hurt.... BAD! oh well. i'll bite the bullet. she thinks i'm crazy, i think i am too, but i'm stubborn enough to do it this way. i'll probably do it in the first part of january.
i'm off to the philippines tonight at 2 am. i'll be back on the 21st. ya'll have a wonderful month. kit and X take notes and keep me updated if anything happens that i should know about.
one last thing... i saw a movie in the theater last night, big thing for me. anyhow. i saw Casino Royale. ok so my modivation for it was eye candy, 1st bond movie i've seen. couldn't tell you much that happened but there were some great shots of "bond, james bond" in it. yozers! highly recommend it.
try not to have to much fun without me. i'll be thinking of you while i'm gone and relaxing. :)

Heh. Dinner at la Maison du Renard was sort of drawn out b/c I was starrrrrving when I dragged the bike in the house. Made a cheese/mayo sandwich first off and ate it as I was waiting for my rice to finish. ...got done with the sandwich and just ate cheese. Put the cheese/bread/mayo away, and looked at the cashews in the cupboard. Ate a couple handfulls, and the royal jelly (in honey) caught my eye. Put a couple more handfulls of nuts in a bowl and drizzled with honey. Ate with a spoon. Mmmm. Rice was done. 1st bowl full had hoisin sauce. 2nd has melted butter. Mmmm.

I love your dog, Knot, what kind is he?
He's a Mystery Mutt from the humane society. Best guess is some kind of collie/shepherd mixed with setter. He's got incredibly long wavy hair that I have to keep trimmed. People with Australian shepherds often think he's an Aussie, and folks with Entelbuchers often think he's one of them. (the little version of the Bernese Mountain dog)
His siblings at the pound really looked like setters, he was the odd duck of the bunch. The only black puppy. The others were white with big liver, gold, or black patches. When I visited he was the only one who hadn't been adopted yet, the others had homes they were just waiting to go to.

Well...the date went well. We saw Johnny Winters at the Colonial Theater. He's amazing and I'm so lucky to have a venue that unique a block from my house. (It's the theater where the Blob was filmed). The boy seemed to have a good time and to be really impressed by my cuteness (I clean up pretty good). But the night ended with "have a good weekend, I'll call you...", not too promising words, so we'll see. If this one blows me off, I'm going back to 20ish year olds. At least they call...

Oh sure AG, just throw us over for the kid. I see where your loyalties are. (and if they weren't like that, I'd smack ya around personally woman :p ) Kids always come first. Of course spend time with D. I wasn't sure if he was with his dad or what this w/e. You can always bring him along and break off on your own ride on the trail if he can't do a longer ride. Then we'll meet up with you as we loop back. Just a thought. Of course, we still aren't totally sure where we're riding. OTG thought about coming down here to me this time and she is trying to work something out with Gypsy. (4 local PA girls! Yea!!)
You got to experience Johnny Winters in person?! Cool date. What a great blues player. I bet he can still rock. Once great, always great. I went to a show maybe 10 years back while in NYC. Unbelievable. Hope you got to hear his slide guitar. Did ya know, he started out playing with guys like the Everly Bros? Big difference, huh? Moved on up with the big boys like Muddy Waters. (I think they won a Grammy on a collaboration) You are so lucky. Even if the dude doesn't call you back for another date.
Bmo3 - So glad you're feeling better after the flu onset. I'm sure you needed that run last night. Just be careful not to push those lungs too hard, too soon. Please. Pneumonia (and bronchitis) is at an all time high right now.
Last night was great. They are so good. Definitely my local favorite by far. I got there an hour late though. (bad X, bad - smack patties :() Standing room only by then and my friend who was saving me a seat ended up losing them b/c of it. I felt really bad about that. I promised to be there extra early next time and turn off my cell so no one can reach me at the last minute and suck me into their vortex of drama. I've also gotta buy a round of drinks for the whole gang next time. I better work some overtime, that's a lot of ladies and they don't drink cheap liquor. :p
Kit - I am going to the post office right after this to send it. It's coming Priority, so you should hopefully see it on or about the 5th. I'll put tracking on it. Sorry it took longer than I anticipated but you know what's been going on here for me so I know you understand. Thanks hon. (There's a little something extra in there for you and H. Enjoy. ;))
Well, I'm outta here. Got lots to catch up on. Wanna get the nice clean Jeep all muddy too. Priorities ya know.
Have a great w/e TE TD. Take care and be safe.

kelownagirl, POOF! that's quite the visual.
Well I arrived about 15 minutes before ride start there were 4 people there, two of whom were obviously not riding.
I thought, "I'm glad I came, there are so few here."
It was also very cold or what passes for cold here.
But as I got the bike down, checked the tires, found my full finger gloves riders came from every direction. Down the hill, through the park, both streets, bikes kept appearing.
Maury rode to ride start on their Calfee tandem, one of Kathys jerseys carefully folded and strapped to the stokers saddle.
We hugged and cried.
He said on his way there a driver rolled his window down and in a friendly way pointed at the bike
"hey buddy, you're missing something"
"yes, I miss her, she's dead"
Best to be honest at this time.
After a brief intro to the ride we set off. The only sound riders clipping in or out. We were not too far down when I heard someone ask if I was from TE (must be the AV vest and arm skins ;) ). It was Deanna so we rode briefly together, I lost track of her at the memorial itself.
Thanks for letting me know about this and thanks TE.
At one point I fell back in the pack and could really see the line of riders, we went on and on. I heard someone say there were well over 100 riders, I'd guess far more.
Drivers and the community were aware of the ride; there was some honking (the short beep beeps of aproval not laying on the horn), a few cars flashed lights, others waved or gave thumbs up. I also was aware that as we got close to the church some cars would just drive next to us which felt like they were "protective" of us.
We got to the church and rolled in, my Mom was there. My Mom said she thinks this show of support must be very comforting to Kathys family. And she's been impressed by the kindness cyclists show to others and each other.
The service itself was very moving.
But I was telling Knott I'm having trouble right now with the whole pink fluffy clouds and safe with G** thang and she's safe with all the family that preceeded her.
Kathy, who was never mad at anybody and had a smile for everyone and every situation...I think she'd be p*ssed off. I know I am. I never got to ride with her. Can you believe we never did? "I think she's saying scr%w these wings, it's Dec 2 and perfect weather I should be riding "
Best to not get too philosophical here.
After the service and food I had to ride back. I'd been offered to put my bike in the back of someones car but felt like I needed a ride. Club members told me the best thing would be hang out at the bike racks (Santa Rosa Cycling club brought racks and guarded our bikes) and find someone headed back to Howarth Park.
Did not take me long to find a rider headed that way.
Note to AG and our single gals: this guy was cuuute (if you like that kinda thing), nice, single (we chatted as we rode, he's a widower, single for a few years), good rider, curteous, and he cleans up nice! He went from neatly pressed suit to bike gear in a matter of minutes and looked good in both.
You should come out west and ride with the Santa Rosa cycling club. :D :D

Thank you so much for posting that description of the memorial ride. So very sad.
It's so weird, just 10 minutes before your post I was writing in effect the very same thoughts and fears about the pink puffy cloud thing that you wrote. I was writing to a good friend about my terrible fears of eventual death and separation from my beloved DH, when the day comes that something happens to one of us and the other must go on alone and in pain and grief. I cried when I wrote it to her, cried again when I read your account just now. It's a night of contemplation of our mortality and existence.

Yes, he is fine. It's really just my inner paranoia, coupled with my mother dying a few months ago, other deaths in my past, reading Raindrop's thread about her brother's death, and reading about cyclists getting killed so tragically. I take it all to heart and it really makes me very much afraid and sad when I think of all these deaths. I didn't used to be so afraid about death when I was single. Now I can't bear thoughts of it anymore. It's just something I'll have to deal with and try to put in perspective.
Thanks for your concern! :o

But the rest was great). He is also SO bright and well read, and she is also. We always love to talk politics and history with him. For the umpteenth time today I've glanced at the wall where Miz Cakes resides. It's driving me nuts. She's in the shop for repairs after my accident. Bent the rear derailleur hanger... and after having had her for 3, almost 4 years and never once having had real 'official' maintinance on her (just what I've been able to do) I figured it was time for an overhaul. I have great faith in the shop I frequent to buy things from. Good guys, honest, friendly, so I know they're not jacking me, but even hopping on the winter overhaul deal (half price labor, plus parts) it's still expensive as h*ll. $250 (incl. parts needed) per the estimate. *cringe* maybe more like $200 if the bottom bracket and rear derailleur themselves are actually ok. For this, they're completely dismantling and cleaning the bike, waxing, putting in new cables and cable housings (Bontrager?) completely servicing the hubs, truing the wheels, looking at my bb (he said it 'felt' worn, but he'd check it out) and the headset, brake pads, total clean of the drive-train and... I think that's it. I get to cough up the money and take my baby home on my b-day, though, so that'll be good. I feel weird missing an inanimate object... but... she's not an object. She's my companion for the 3 hours every day I commute. Lately she's been complaining bitterly of my neglect, but despite the problems has always supported me.

i accepted the invite and i have to make 7 dozen cookies to swap with 7 other people. 7 dozen is A LOT of coookies! I'm making biscotti, made 1 batch which gave me 5 dozen cookies. grrrr.
I ran out of almost everything after making one batch so i rode to the store 38 degrees out! and bought eggs, vanilla and almonds. So now i can make batch #2.
I discovered that the store is only 0.6 miles so i went a really long way because there's still a small chance i might make my goal of 2000 miles this year, i have 92 miles to go. and yes, i am counting my basement miles!

not sure what you call difficult.
6 eggs
beat eggs thoroughly then add:
1/4 lb melted butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
mix all liquid ingredients
then add
4-5 cups flour
4 tsp baking powder
chopped almonds 3/4 cup
mix until you get a thick dough and then knead until it has a satiny finish.
make into 3 long loaves (think french baguettes) and put into a 375 degree oven (either cover bottom of pan with parchment paper or a little flour)
bake these loaves until they are golden brown.
Pull from oven and slice
put slices back into oven until the sides are lightly golden brown (or you can
burn some like I always do because the stupid oven ... (i always blame the oven) makes about 5-6 dozen biscotti

My 200k yesterday went well. It was 85F down there, though! Lise- I'm still wearing my sandals in December! Oh yeah, she can't hear me, she's too busy with the guy she dumped Peter Reid for.
It's really tropical down there. The ride was along the coast, and along the Indian river which separates the barrier islands from the mainland. Some very, very rick people live there. Gorgeous houses, and landscaping. Trees that look like they came from a tropical island. All kinds of cool wading birds. No see ums that bit every time we stopped!
Salsa- Steve is so awesome, isn't he? Tonight I fed Inez, Choco and Zee. Inez first, making sure to wash so I didn't smell like mouse and get bit. Then Chocs. By the time I was going to go get Zee to put in his feeding container, I thought his mouse was a little too cool (should be 100F) so I popped it back in warm water, then went to get Zee. I'm carrying Zee in my left hand, and trying to dry the mouse in my right, and I feel this chewing on the side of my palm, and it's Zee, trying to eat me! Must have smelled mousy. My first venomous snake bite! (Not to worry, they are "rear-fanged" so he'd have to swallow my hand to get me, but even then, the venom is weak.) So all the good snakes eat, and I'm going to put Zee back, and he tail-rattled at me! What a tough guy!
The good news is that Addy's mouse stayed down, and she has gained one gram, and I am going to feed her again tomorrow afternoon.
Oh, on my ride, my nice Oakleys (that I didn't like so much) flew off my aerobars (they've ridden a couple thousand miles there with no problem) and got immediately run over. So I have ordered a pair of pink half jackets- hope I like them.
Next 200k is January 6th, right here at home. It'll be my one year anniversary of randonneuring.

I don't think there's a case of a human being harmed by a hognose bite...it'd be tough for him to actually inject venom, since his fangs are way back in there.
I know Inez is guaranteed to be a female, and Zee has been sexed as a male. They stick a probe into the cloaca and if it goes in far- it's a boy- needs storage room, and if it barely goes in, it's a girl. You can also guess by the way the tail joins to the body. I guess Maizey is a female, and probably Choco, too. haven't really looked at Addy.
We went to see Borat today. We must be the only two people in the world who didn't think it was hilarious...

The movies I like are mostly kind of odd.
We rented Metropolis at Thanksgiving- a 1920's silent film masterpiece about life in the "future" (2026!) in a world where humans are divided into two separate groups- workers and thinkers. It was great. We also rented some old Jason & The Golden Fleece and Seventh Voyage of Sinbad- so bad they are now good, and the claymation work is still impressive after all these years.
I like movies like EraserHead, and John Waters, Cohen Bros., and Russ Meyers movies. I do like sentimental black and white 1940's movies. Also new independent movies- we saw The Lives of Others at our little town's film fest a few months ago, talk about a great film, and it just got picked as best film of the year in Europe. Also liked Penelope Cruz and the women's cast of Volver, another prize winner.
We don't watch tv, and I'm always clueless when people talk about tv shows or tv actors. We only have a tv in order to watch the movies we rent a couple of times a month. It's always dusty.

Still have a sore lower back / right hip. It is so annoying because I just got my trainer all set up and rode it 3 times, then borrowed a Spinerval tape 2.0 Time Trial to try out. Now I think I should probably be off the bike until the pain is totally gone. Hope that's soon. DH (or should I call him "F"? - for fiance - haha) thinks I should ride a little and work it out. Trek, you already know my thoughts on yesterday. Thanks for wearing the AV gear for us at the memorial. We certainly were by your side out there dear. I wore the Jenny shirt under all my layers today to remember Kathy on our ride. *raising my glass* To both ladies who were taken too young and tragically on their bikes.
Salsa - I'm ok. Getting better everyday too. Thanks.
I'm coming out with another gal from here to ride Cindy...er, the Cinderella (sorry X...I couldn't resist).
*Ahem* You're "coming out" with another gal to ride who? Ahem, nobody tells me anything around here. Hmmm, well I guess I better get a ticket too if I'm supposed to participate. Or is this to be the over-the-phone type of ride? (That was way too easy.) You dared to go there, so you asked for it. ;) Welcome to TD. (No one is safe, no one.) Have a nice trip. Wha? Me tired? No way, hon. Actually, I stopped by to visit my Mom on my way home. Then went looking for xmas bikes for the nieces again. Ran into bro there and hung out a bit. Came home and did a load of laundry, cleaned the kitchen after someone left it a sight today :(, ran the dishes through a cleaning, took a shower, tested the hot tub water and added some chemicals, swept the patio cuz it bugged me, cooked a meal. (Never got the pasta for lunch so I made spaghetti. Oh good batch, lots of mushrooms and fresh garlic bread. Yum.) IM'd with a couple of people, answered my emails and now am posting. Just unloaded the Jeep. Still have to clean and lube and reassemble my bike. I think that will wait until tomorrow tho. It's now 1:05 am. :D

AG - Safe trip to ya and have a blast. Oh, yeah almost forgot... ;) :D
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALLEZGIRL!!!!
Nanci - I agree on the Talladega Nights movie. The kind of movie that makes you dumber for having watched it. I usually like Will Farrell but this one came up way short with me. Even drunk it sucks.
Last night I bought the animated movie Cars on my way home and watched it while doing a million other things. First saw it in the theatre with some nieces and then with J. Very cool little flick. If you need a Nascar fix, go with this one next time.
I love Pixar stuff. Even though I adore Toy Story, The Incredibles is still my favorite from them. Intelligent storylines, subtly placed tangents and undertones, inventive elements designed into the backround and they are by far the most elite animation team in the business. All time favorite (animated) is still Snow White though. Untouchable.
Well, gotta go clean up the bike from yesterday. Then reassemble her. No hitch for the Jeep yet, so no rack. Tough one figuring out how to fit her in the back safe and secure without getting chain grease on everything. (She got to be the first one to ride upside-down in that Jeep. Darn, I was hoping for that honor. Oh well, 'next' is a good place too. :o :D)
Hope you all have a glorious day.

X- I really liked the Spare-Me bike rack by Thule. mounts *very* securely on the spare tire and can easily carry two mtn bikes. I think having the bikes on the outside would help prevent you from having your top slashed. not sure how you'd lock 'em on. I think there was a cable that did it 'officially', but what we did was take one of those 6' long kryptonite cables and loop it 'round, then thru the tire, so it would be a massive b*tch to try and steal. just a thought.
feeling icky this morning. I think it'll be shortlived, though. don't wanna go to work. ;)

Thanks Kit for the info. I didn't want to put one on the tire cuz I think there is already enough weight hanging on the back door hinges. I have a hitch on order, just isn't here yet. Then I'll do a final fit on my design for a flat rack for a cargo area, single bike and kayak combo. Lots of work there yet. Still need a 4 bike hitch rack though for when the kids and others come along. (still working on getting some friends out riding, so you never know) I've got my eye on a great lock setup that I think will work. I'm gonna have to adjust the original design a bit. (You know me.) It'll be a bugger for them to get them off though.
Sorry your not well today. Hope it gets better. IM me or gimme a call later tonight if you're up to it. (((Kit)))

X - I love the Pixar stuff too. I still wish they' bring out another Toy Story movie. I love Tom Hanks too. Haven't seen Cars. My ex. seems to take my little guy to all the moveis because he gets him on weekends, plus he always buys him stuff so he often picks up the new dvd's before I do...
Our musical was written by a staff member. It's the story of an old couple celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. As they reminisce, we see scenes of how they met etc. DH and I play the younger version of them (aack, I have to 18 again?). We sing the Everly Bros "Dream" (although we do the version by James Taylor and his partner, her name escapes at the moment) and Going to the Chapel together. I have to sing Leader of the Pack alone (  ) he sings Listen to the Rhythm of the Falling Rain alone, and we sing in all the group songs as well. It has been SO fun rehearsing. I have been a background singer in a play before and in choirs but nevr had a solo. I am going to puke onstage I'm sure. (PS I went to see the Everly Bros about 3 years ago, I was the only one there without grey/white hair. :D )

Hiccups ... best 'weird' remedy that actually works is to put your fingers over the opening of the ear canal and drink water. This is most easily achieved by using a straw. Everyone will ask you what the heck you are doing, but it's worked for me every time.

Well I didn't make it to the singles dance Sat night. I drove to Madison to see my friend. Talked to his sister the day before to make sure he would be taking visitors. Talked to him the morning of. Both said ok. Drove down to see him and his mom wouldn't let me stop by! (6 hour round trip mind you!). I'm a little peeved about it all. I know he had major surgery but that's why I called. It's not like I was from town and popping in. I know I need to let it go but it is bothering me a bit. And not a thank you from either on making the trip or hey, we appreciate you driving down here. Nothing.
My car was acting up a bit on the way down (almost at 200,000 miles and it needs a couple thousand of work). So I stopped at the Honda dealer - and bought a used Pilot! At least my trip wasn't wasted:D I'll be heading back down there on Thursday to pick it up - I'm so excited (except for the car payment - not used to those at all!). Mimi, I was within 5 miles of his house when his mom called and told me "they'd pass" on my visiting. WTF?! I realize she was just being a mom and doing what was best for her baby - he did have heart surgery. But they knew I was coming and I thought it would have been nice to have known before driving down. So he called last night and I didn't answer. I know it's not his fault - he's still looped on pain killers, but I didn't want to say anything I shouldn't.

Cops. My dad is a retired one, my uncle was the sheriff, my brother is one my cousin is a state trooper and my ex was one (he is no longer one). I'm used to the lifestyle and personality. I think a bigger issue is that they see things more black and white than most people - can be more judgemental than controlling. So far from his personality, not like the others but his hobbies are - working on houses. He wasn't online because he was trying to finish building his garage before the snow came. But that's no excuse not to talk to me:D

Oh most definitely! :D
Yay for Addy! Yay for Knot's culinary skills! Yay for AG's bday! Yay for OTG's pants falling off! (well, you know what I mean).
I am really frustrated. I had one credit card on auto-pay. I paid it off. They keep taking my $300 every month. I thought I'd solved the problem last month, when I got my $300 refund, and "cancelled" the auto pay. Today I get a statement with another $300 credit. Argh. It is next to impossible to get a person to talk to me about it.
My cat (Ariel), has a new obsession. I used "skin shield" on the many nicks and papercuts I get on my hands, especially in the winter. The danged cat can smell freshly applied Skin Shield from across the apartment, and jumps up on the desk to sniff my hands until she finds the place it was applied, and then tries to lick it all off. Just now she did that as I was typing, and bit the spot when she found it! At that point she was dumped on the floor. It's kind of cute to have her sniffing all over my hands, but I can't imagine it does her little pea brain any good to lick Skin Shield. Kind of like sniffing glue for kitties?
Aggravating staff meeting tonight--tough things to talk about--money and scheduling. I finally decided that this headache is a migraine, and took some Maxalt. My migraines are nothing like BM3's, I'm grateful to report. Now I'm going to bed. Also grateful for a really quiet call shift. Sleep tight, TD.

whine. And I already ate the last of my chocolate!
They LOVE applicants like you, way more than fresh-out-of-undergrads with no experience of any kind beyond dorm puking/cleaning thereof. No kidding. Is it the PT program?
And is anyone from California going to be visiting here soon, maybe?

Evening TD. Been busy having the "we've decided to get married" chat with my 8 yo son. He took it well and is excited. Wants to be a part of the ceremony. I suggested holding the rings, he would rather be the minister...
DAR - congrats on the new car. I'd like a 4 WD but will be content with my FWD for now. Too bad about the 6 hour trip. I'd have been tempted to say, well I just drove three hours so I'm going to make a quick stop to give him a hug and say hello... Hope you're feeling better by the time you read this. We've had lots of tummy flu going around here. Glad I'm done with it.
Allezgirl - Happy Birthday. Depending on what time zone you're in, this may be a day late. :) How old are ya?
I was thinking about CWR and the typhoon ever since I heard about it. Guess it's just a good thing she didn't go a couple of days earlier..
X - we must be about the same age because we like the same music...
Nanci - so glad to hear Addy is starting to eat! I take it the first mouse stayed down/ How often will she eat once she's "regular"?
Knot - did you put any liquid in that beef and mushroom crockpot? I've been reading about cooking meat without any liquid and can't quite fathom it. Good luck with your application!
OTG - isn't it amazing how much your weight can fluctuate even in one day?
KG - CONGRATS!!! Way to go on the update (very cute btw!). You'll have to give us more details....I love listening to love stories.
Dar - here's the Cole's notes version.
DH and I have sort of known each other for about 15 years. We used to live about 1/2 mile from each other when we were both married to other people and our kids went to school together although not in the same grades. His wife actually did some work with my husband at one time. Then for the past 5 years, we've worked together at the same school although we never really "noticed" one another at all. He was divorced but in a fairly long-term relationship and I was unhappily married. Two years ago, in fall, I had just separated and he had just split up with girlfriend the previous spring. He was trying to get the staff to go out to do stuff since he was alone a lot and I was looking for something to keep my mind off being alone too. We started to notice each other a little and started to email as well as talk more at work. We had always sat together at the same table for lunch anyway. We emailed a lot about music and our philosophies of life. I think the email really helped us to open up in a way that may never have happened otherwise, and I have kept all the emails just for fun becasue you can really see how the relationshiop was developing. Then for fun, he invited me to be his date to the staff Christmas party and I thought it would be an easy first date since I had no designs on him. One thing led to another and we started dating more seriously. Unfortunately some people didn't even know I was separated then so it became a bit of the "talk" of the town but we didn't hide anything since we had no reason to. All the kids and teachers thought it was pretty interesting that these two teachers were dating especially since we live in the same community as our school and we run into kids everywhere we go. Last summer we moved in together and then this weekend, he proposed. It's all been very romantic and fun and we really didn't talk much about marriage before now because I really wanted to wait to be properly asked this time round. Anyway, I truly think we were meant to be together, our paths have crossed so many times but the time has never been right. He really is my soul mate and we think alike on so many issues that it makes life easier. Of course, we both understand what is truly important in life now and we know how to keep the love alive I think. We're more romantic and affectionate and in love now than we were a year ago, and I doubt it'll ever really change all that much.
OK that was longer than Cole's notes, I know. :D :D

Med/science librarian--cool idea.
Gooooooooooooooddddd Addy.
I REALLY love the "take a drink of water and spell my name backwards before I swallow it" hiccup remedy. I am going to dribble and drool huge quantities of water all over myself when I try that, and I find it so amusing that I AM going to try it.
Dar, I would have been upset too.
Just for a little variety from work, I would like someone to pay me to stay in bed tomorrow with a good book. Thank you.

I think I am going to keep Addy on the young snake five day schedule with Inez and Choco. Zee had been fed every week- but he's small- but North American Hognoses are prone to fatty liver disease from over feeding- I don't know if this has been reported in South American Hognoses- they are very distantly related...I think stick to one week just to be safe. Maizey is on 10-14 days.
Knot- you always make the best dinners...Good luck with library school. I have a friend who does that- it sounds like a lot of work. But she gets to travel a lot to conferences!
KG- when I make my 20 garlic chicken in the crockpot- (chicken, garlic stuffed all over it, it lays on a bed of sliced onions) there's no water added but it's in an inch of juice when done...
I bought two pork loins yesterday- hope it's warm enough to grill tonight or tomorrow. I covered my flowers, but it only got to 37F. Supposed to be near freezing tonight again.

Good news, TD! I got up and called Evil Bank of the Empire straight away this morning. I persisted even when it sounded like the "too many options" computer had hung up on me. I insisted on getting a phone number when clueless person #1 wanted to transfer me, 'cuz the last time they transferred me directly into Dial Tone Land. I got Ann on the phone. Ann got Jill on the phone. Jill actually seemed to know what she was doing. Jill assured me that she's stopped my auto pay and is (again) refunding the $300 they helped themselves to. I wanted to say, "Now, if I had 300 of your dollars, you'd be charging me 29% percent interest, I see here on the statement. Are you going to pay me 29% interest since you took $300 from me on 11/18? Hmmmm?" But I didn't push it. I just want the madness to stop. I feel better, because I've budgeted so carefully and couldn't figure out why my balance got so low last payperiod (I thought this was a different auto pay). Phew.
Migraine all gone. I tend to try other things--Tylenol, Motrin, rubbing my neck, drinking some caffeine--before I think, "this could be a migraine", and take the Maxalt. Then, 1/2 hr later, when the pain is all gone, and I feel slightly dizzy, I realize, "yep. Definitely a migraine." I love that medicine.
KG, I love your story, and am delighted to hear of your impending nuptuals!
Knot, congrats on getting started! You're right, you've described the whole process pretty well. I am encouraged for the human race that 4 people apply for every one position in library school.
Windows covered with frost. Computer says it's 11 degrees out. Think I won't try running today. I will walk (well bundled) to the el later and go downtown to have lunch with J. :D

I got 4 Christmas cards yesterday - that made my day:p
KG - thanks for sharing your story:p You two sound so happy. I'm glad your son is also happy with it, I know it's hard when they aren't on the same page. Keep us posted on the wedding plans!
Knot, good luck with grad school apps. You'll get in - just cook them a meal and hand deliver it with the application. In like Flynn I say!
Still not feeling the best this morning but at least no hurling. The boss is out sick today though. I asked the cleaning guy to lysol everything down last night but no one else listens to me around here:o
OTG - I finally lost a pound, hehe. Got to start somewhere cuz you motivate me. Awesome that your pants are falling down - isn't that a great feeling?!
My car is officially possessed (actually, it must have electrical shorts). My interior lights, brake lights and dash lights flash periodically when they want too. I hope I don't get pulled over for it cuz that would be hard to explain.

:D Thank you, ladies!
B-day plans are as follows:
As a surprise gesture, my prev. manager took me out to dinner last night. We ended up chatting for around 3 hours. Lots of fun. :D
Got home, and waited for DGF b/c she'd be home soon at that point. got my 1st b-day present at midnight-- windblock, fuzzy, insulated pants so I can wear 'em on my commute! :D
then sleep... but since it's a full moon, I woke up, totally awake a few times. Oh well.
DGF is meeting me at 12:15ish for lunch @ work, taking me to go have sushi (whee!) and meet my new mgr...
Not sure about this evening, but I'm sure I'll manage something spontaneous and fun. :D Or quiet and relaxing. :) either way. Oh, and this evening I get to pick Miz Cakes up from the shop; presumably a whole new bike after all the work that's being done. What a deal!
Hugs to all you TD ladies, just in case I don't get back on here today~!

I'm gonna puke. Or cry. Or both.
I took the GRE back in the early 90's. I studied my butt off, I got fabulous scores. (better than a certain physics PhD i know) Put them away in a file box. Lost the file box somewhere in the basement where I used to live. Someone found that file box recently. I asked her to send me my scores. She hates me so much she shredded them instead.
I figured no problem, I'll just have the scores sent directly to the grad school.
Called GRE this morning. Nope. They purge all scores after 5 years. I have to retake the test. That'll be about 6 months.
I'm not applying to grad school this year.
Better luck in 2008.... damm.
(silver lining: I won't be stressing about my apps while I'm on vacation next week.:o )

Happy birthday, Kit!
MtD: Sorry to second that, but yes, that is exactly what my car did before the alternator died. The WORST part was when it started doing that, I took it to the dealer to get fixed. Dealer couldn't find ANYthing wrong. Three days later, I'm stranded on the side of the road at 1:30 a.m. because I was coming home from work (nights at the time). It takes a good 2 hours to get a tow at that time of night. I was so mad.
But congrats on the weight loss! That's awesome work.
I'm peeved because I just had a fight with two co-workers over a comma in an important document. Sure, let's not ask the person who does this for a living. Let's just completely ignore every rule and add them willy nilly. Like, it's, so, great, to keep, using, commas, all, the, time. Sorry. I'm a little testy.

Nanci - Alright Addy! Hope she continues to eat like a good little girl.
Knot - Good for you on grad school. I understand how your kind of job can get hard on your body over the years. Of course, you have some good reasons to keep that body in top condition. (ya know, um, like for riding that beautiful Flossie  ;)) I've been kicking around the idea of going back to school for a little more torture as well. Hopefully next fall. I've started the whole process and many days I sit here thinking, "What am I getting myself into again?" All the stress is worth it if it's truly what you want to do. (and it is a lot of stress, isn't it? phew.) I'd tell ya good luck, but you've got it covered with pure talent and intelligence.
Edit: just read your post on XPITA. What a *****! Hey, while I'm in the area, if ya need someone to go over there and **mumble, mumble** her up a bit, just say the word. ;) Gosh, I bet you're glad you are rid of someone like her and have moved onto a much better life. Night and day. Maybe you have a copy somewhere else? Did ya need it for anything over the years? *fingers crossed*
As for OTG- Yup, I can attest that her pants are definitely falling off and she looks fantastic! (wait, um, er... shoot, you know what I mean :o) Anyway, when are we heading up to Penn State main campus? I need a tour from a pro. I only go up for FB games. That won't be my campus, but it's a good excuse to go hang out together. Any good riding up there? We'll take a bike tour.
Lise - Glad the migraine is gone. I'm very lucky in that I rarely get headaches, maybe once every few months and they are mild. I have a best friend who gets migraines and I go over and take care of her. Just devastates her. So hard to see her go through that. So yeah, I can't even imagine how BMo3 gets through hers. ((((BMo3))))
You and J are soooo adorable. Keep the stories coming, some of us need it. :)
Kit - I hope the package arrives ok and you, H and Miz Cakes like what I sent. From one sis to another, xoxo. (thanks for all of the support, really meant a lot)
BMo3 - Hope you're having a good day. I'm gonna check the calendar at work today and see about giving myself a 3 day w/e before xmas. I have a paid personal day coming, may as well put it to good use before it expires. I am getting there. (ocean) Sorry, I think I was overly tired last night. I crashed as soon as we were done. Slept 8 hours for once, instead of 5. I feel a bit more alive today. Seriously, thanks for helping me out of my funk over recent tragic events. If you're up to it, I'd like to have that little chat tonight.
Trek - I'd like to talk to you about the Cinderella ride sometime. I've been searching old threads but no luck. Still thinking of coming out with AG for it. (yes Kit, then heading up the coast :D) I was gonna do my vacation late April, but would move it up for the cindy ride. Anywho, I have no idea what to expect. Terrain, weather, needed gear... and of course, the most important aspect, what to wear. (Nope, no clowns BMo3, I promise. Although I'm a cute one, not a mean one - and I can juggle too. Even have a unicycle hanging in the garage. Probably break my arse on it these days tho. :D)
Well, enjoy the day everyone and be safe. Gotta go dig out my parka and wooly undies now.

The chickie at GRE suggested I ask my undergrad school if they have copies. I don't think I had them sent, because I had graduated already when I took the GRE. It wouldn't hurt to ask. But I also doubt they kept them this long.
I surfed over to the admissions website again. The library school doesn't care how old your scores are, but they have to have official copies sent from the testing service. Since those are only held 5 years, I might've been toast anyway. I don't think my old paper copy would've counted.
It might have been shredded for nothing. (ha!)
I will now order new running shoes and maybe new running pants, have a wonderful vacation and happy holidays, then knuckle down and train for my tri and study for my GRE and get everything ready to apply next year.

Knot, so sorry. That's awful. You study hard again and I bet you'll beat your score, too.
X, I can see if I remember my old bike route, but definitely not until the spring. Penn State is where I got hit by a car. I was coming home from the Collegian on Beaver Avenue, a two-lane road. I was ripping it at 35-40 mph and keeping up with traffic. I had taken the entire lane. A car on a cross street wanted to go straight and didn't see me. Plowed into the driver's side of the car and flew over it. I don't want to bike that road again.
It is pretty bike out there -- lots of cows. And Long Island iced teas afterwards.
In other news...
I'm picking up my orthotics at lunch today. First there was a big goof-up with the insurance coverage. Then they had said they'd come in the week of the 20th, but they didn't because of Thanksgiving. Then they said they'd call when they came in. I called yesterday, and they had in fact come in last week, but they never called. I asked if I could pick them up in the morning, but the lady said she couldn't tell what days they'd be open before 8. Why oh why are doctors' offices so completely incompetent?
I know I said I didn't care about my weigh-in, but I am getting a bit nervous. We'll see.

I just PMd you about this. I should read before writing. I do so hope they accept them. Whe I wanted to go back for a 2nd masters, I was told my scores were too old. They needed to be within 5 years. I have no idea if that is a universal standard or not.
Upside, being a non-tradition student and me being semi-hysterical at the grad school office, they were willing to find me a GRE testing facility asap, so I could apply.
After that rollercoaster (try finding 3 professional refverences when you are a SAHM), we ended up moving. Now my scores are too "old again. At least for here.
Wishing you far greater successful and peace.

Adult snakes are fed every 10-14 days.
Young snakes are fed weekly.
Very young snakes are fed every 5 days.
I think I'm going to aim for every 5 days for Addy until she has regained the weight she lost. Also, she can voluntarily swallow a much bigger item than what I can put in her mouth- so I will feed more, smaller until she learns to eat by herself.

Mimi, she has to learn to eat an unnatural prey. In the wild (Addy is wild-caught) she would be eating frogs and toads and maybe lizards. I don't want to feed her those- they carry parasites and are an unguaranteeable food source. I have to get her to switch to mice. Same thing with a lot of other pet snakes hatched in captivity like kingsnakes- they normally would be eating other snakes, so you have to sometimes help the babies learn that they will be eating mice. Snake breeders optimally have babies feeding on unscented (with lizard or toad) mice when they are sold. If the babies have not been fed, or have refused to eat for the breeder, they are often sold very, very cheaply or given away. Take tri-color hognoses like Zee for instance. A fresh-hatched baby that hasn't been offered a meal costs $100. A baby that feeds on unscented mice costs $350. Hatchlings that eat toads, or mice scented with toads, cost somewhere in between.

GRE SCORES ARE GOOOOOOOD!!!!
Yes yes yes! I talked to 2 different people in graduate admissions, and they both said my old scores were still good!
So, my score report getting shredded, and my scores being purged after 5 years from the testing center, didn't hurt anything!
Now I gotta do the app! OmiGAWD!
(no new running pants, sigh. gotta pay the admissions filing fee!)

Dar, I have been interested in snakes for as long as I can remember. My daughter, too. I have a picture of her sitting on a potty chair, camping, holding a snake high above her head with both hands. She wouldn't put it down for anything. Interested in snakes means not being able to walk past snake habitat and not look for one. Jumping off my bike to capture one at every opportunity. Riding my MTB for a mile through the woods dangling a big snake to show my friends. I was under control till I found Maizey in my yard a year ago July. And still pretty under control until a friend gave me Choco in September. Then I went shopping for Inez, and the same friend gave me Addy, then I got Zee for my birthday- now I want more! I think just one or two or three more, though. I don't really want to keep them in tubs in racks- I like the natural, pretty vivs.

Hey Nanci,
tarantulas eat only every couple of weeks too- and likes snakes are very clean and quiet pets as well. They are fascinating to watch the things they do. Gave mine up a few years ago. Now they live at Cornell. :p I stick with cats these days, it makes my life easier to be tank-less. ;)

I'm still excited for you and your Romeo! :p
A good cook once told me that yellow potatoes (with the thin smooth skin) stay firmer and hold their shape better when cooked in a stew or soup...that baking potatoes (big, with the brown skin) are starchier and fall apart more. I never compared them, just reporting what I was told.
My DH has has a terrible cough and cold lately. This morning I threw all kinds of veggies in the crock pot with some veg stock, and it was a good hearty veggie stew this evening. I used a small eggplant, a butternut squash, an onion, a turnip, broccolli, summer squash, white beans, garlic. I browned the onions, garlic, and eggplant first in a skillet with olive oil, then threw it all together and cooked low for 5 hours.

Ya know, I was running late all day, got hammered at work all night, left very late after a nasty OR case, almost got plowed by a semi on my way home from work (his fault)... thinkin' WTF else? Pulled into the driveway and there stands a skunk! Sh*t! So, I waited him out by taking a short drive around the neighborhood and looked at everyones xmas lights. (I like the white ones the best I think.) Ok, he's gone so I go home finally, take care of some stuff and think if it gets any worse, I'm gonna drink myself into a comma. I'm shocked (b/c the scale at the gym didn't show a loss), but I'm down 2.75 pounds. That brings me to 25.5 pounds lost so far. :D
Tomorrow night I have the heart rate testing with my trainer. My bike's already in my car, ready to go.
In the bad news (and a massive rant -- brace yourself) ...
My orthotics are a DISASTER. I asked for a pair to wear with dress shoes, knowing I'd use the same pair to wear with my cycling shoes. So, getting two pairs -- one for sneakers, one for dress shoes. The dress shoes orthotics ARE THE SAME WIDTH!!! I checked with them TWICE during the fitting to see if the dress shoe version would be slimmer so they could actually FIT in dress shoes.
So not only are they not even close to fitting in my dress shoes (professional office; I sometimes have meetings with the company's top executives), they are *so* wide they don't even fit in my cycling shoes. I paid an extra $175 to get the second pair, so hopefully they can fix it. The woman I spoke with just seemed completely oblivious to the fact that dress shoes are narrower than sneakers and didn't seem optimistic about getting them made any smaller. Hello!?!? Has she never had to wear dress shoes?
To make things even worse, every time I have to go to the podiatrist's office, I have to leave work early. So far my boss has been patient, but this will be the sixth time just for this doctor.
*sigh*

12-05-2006, 05:59 PM
OTG - that really sucks. I don't know much abut orthotics but I can imagine the frustration. I can't believe they don't understand the difference between different kinds of shoes (maybe you should ask for some for your F-me shoes? ;) :p )
Congrats on the unexpected weight loss - 25+ lbs! Whoo hooo! I cannot believe how easily I can gain weight. I had 3-4 days of 1400-1600 calories and no exercise and I gained more than a pound. (Thinking of BMO and how she has to eat 2000+ calories a day. Sigh... I wish....)

Ya know, Kit, I had a lager one time that felt like a bullet (•) ripped through my ampersand (&) and right out my guillemets (« »). Turned out it was stuck in my ellipsis (…, ...) instead. Well, you know what that leads to. The doc had to take a dagger (â€*) type of instrument, up through my asterisk (*) and drain my umlaut (¨) out my backslash (\).
That was still better than the time I took x-rays on a guy who got a caret (^) stuck in his colon (: ) and had to use brackets [ ] to get it out. Awful process, really. Any further up there or at (@) a slightly different degree (°) of an angle and he could've lost his exclamation point (!). Close call that day. I've got a copy of the x-ray if you'd like to see it.

(does anyone else remember when Ball made jars with mug handles? (I saw them around for a year or two in the 80's or 90's) Ya gotta love a company that can play off the canning-jar-as-drinking-vessel mystique!)

Martha would faint. She'd have to bring her entire crew to my house just to make it acceptable. She could bring me a plumber, too. One of the joys of being the basement apartment at the end of the building's plumbing system is slooooooow drains. Time to go buy another gallon of Zep enzyme drain cleaner.
My dining room light (which was just replaced because it tried to start a fire) has blown both lightbulbs. Now, those are NEW lightbulbs in a NEW fixture. Pooey. But at least I get to be enviro-commando and replace them with my own compact flourescents. (sp) The new fixture is one of those stupid half-dome-flush-with-the-ceiling things, which holds all the heat from the bulbs and makes 'em burn out PDQ. CF bulbs will be peachy!

Yeah, *finally* heard from the doctor, and he says the orthotics are simple and easy to fix. :) Got an appointment next week. Why the person who does all his orthotics casting couldn't tell me that I don't know.

Knotted: GREs? Admissions? What field are you in? Just today I read a piece on a bulletin board down the hall from my office -- about a gal who wrote a dissertation about one on-line discussion forum, in fact mainly just two threads on a forum about sexualities and identities. Fascinating stuff, but later on that one. What struck me now is that it would take somebody a whole PhD-ship to get through this thread drift thread and analyze it. Any chance you'll take that on?

Hmmm, the group is always so much more talkative when I am ill. Reading the past few pages has helped, thank you. :)
Snap-thank you for saving one of Knot's posts, otherwise I would have missed it.
Knot-for a brief, terrible moment I thought you were without coffee. That would be dreadful. Years ago, when we still had our old coffee grinder, DH had to travel to France for a conference. The next morning I got up (I am not a morning person by choice) and went directly to make coffee so I could see to take care of the boys. I could not get the grinder to work and Z looked up at me and in an ever serious little boy voice said "we are not going to need to smash all the beans with hammers are we? It will take too long and you need coffee". Needless to say I bundled all three up and drove to one of my 10 local Starbuck's.
OTG-I am glad things went well with the doctor.
X-Thanks for updating us on CWR. If you speak with her again, tell her I said no more running. She can run all she wants after her surgery. I tell you, kids these days.
Ah, back to bed. I have a fever to rid myself of before tomorrow night. The twins have a MS band concert and it would be very bad for me not to attend.

What a melancholy day I'm having. I just read that the Oregon authorities have found the body of James Kim. I started to cry. For a person I've never met, yet feel like I know - he and his family have been on the news down here for well over a week. Such a sad ending, to what at first seemed like a hopeful story. Blessings to his wife and daughters.

Oh, God, that is so sad. I was afraid that might happen but hoping it wouldn't. Ugh. How awful for them.

Duck - Science librarian. I'd like to work in a university or research library, medical or biological would be favorite. I've got library, zoology, and medical experience now; and "back in the day" I was thinking of that for grad school. Hoping the experience will help me. My library buddies have all said they are really hurting for science librarians with actual science backgrounds.
Life doesn't go according to plan:D , so now I'm trying to pick up where I left off and jump into grad school. I'm a bit intimidated by the application process! (A *lot* intimidated!) And it will be very weird to be in classes with students young enough to be my children...
I suppose analyzing TD could count as "information science." But I think it'd be more applicable to some psych PhD!
