Baad Catrin, but this IS my birthday weekend :) I figured that I shouldn't just post my good days.
Yesterday:
B: scrambled egg whites, no-fat cottage cheese, coffee
L: Yummy whole-grain noodles from Noodles Co. with Parmesan-encrusted chicken. I would have done this differently if I had known what was coming for dinner.
D: Went out with Winding Road and her SO for dinner to Yats, a delightful Cajun/Creole restaurant where I had a half order of yummy Étouffé and half an order of Drunken Chicken which was incredible! Of course both came over white rice.
Afterwards we went to a local microbrewery tasting room (Uplands) and had 2 pints of Bad Elmer's Porter, one of my favorite Porters. I haven't had it on tap before and it was quite yummy as well. We also sampled some Barley Wine which pretty much tasted like moonshine  I won't be trying that again, but at least I know what it tastes like.

half of a whole wheat naan "pizza" with pesto, figs, goat cheese, salad, 2 squares chocolate
Were the figs on the pizza?
Crankin
11-02-2011, 12:13 PM
Yes. The recipe actually calls for fig preserves made into pesto with walnuts, but I didn't have any, so I just used dried figs on top. Oh, and a sliced pear, also. The sweet and salty of the figs and regular pesto was a bit odd, but still fine. One naan always looks like not enough for 2 people, but it is, because whenever I eat a whole one by myself, it's way too much.

Don't you ever do that?

I made a kickin dinner tonight after my hour on the trainer. I had some leftover arctic char (a bit like salmon, but sustainably farmed and smaller overall), so I chopped it up pretty finely and mixed it in with two of the eggs my chickens layed today. It's kind of a japanese style omelet, although I dipped it in braggs instead of soy sauce. I also sauteed a few cups of baby spinach in some ginger oil and braggs and sprinkled them with sesame seeds. I also also had some leftover white rice, so I had a half a cup or so of that. It hit the spot so hard tonight.

Ooh, Reesha, that sounds pretty good. Except the eggs. I'm still trying to make myself eat eggs that aren't fried in butter. I justify as a cost-saving measure :o and the fact that the eggs are from my friend's mom's chickens. They are fantastic!

I'm coming to the conclusion that the only way that I can make oatmeal a workout-friendly breakfast is to put so much peanut butter in it that it becomes akin to eating peanut butter out of the jar, except without the guilty pleasure. And there's a bowl full of it.

Owlie, is that steel-cut oats or regular oatmeal? I find the only way I can stomach rolled oats is with LOTS of peanut butter. With steel-cut I can limit that to 1 teaspoon of PB, or a couple (5) almonds or walnuts and a few blueberries and skim milk. Yum!
You might want to consider pairing the oatmeal with more protein, perhaps a couple of scrambled egg whites or a slice or two of turkey bacon? It may just be my body and blood sugar issues but I do much better the rest of the day with something like this for breakfast. PB does have protein of course, but not all that much...

I ate way too much yesterday. Breakfast was fine, 2 egg omelette with cheese and salsa, 3 slices turkey bacon, 2 skim milk cappuccinos
then I went to my monthly peer consultation group meeting, where I had more coffee, 2 very small scallion scones, about half a cup of wheat berry salad, and mostly the fruit off of the top of some pastry thing.
came home and ate 3/4 of a Luna Bar before a 20 mile ride. It was freezing out, about 33, and riding in the cold makes me ravenous. When I got home I finished the Luna Bar, had a whole wheat deli flat and a piece of low fat Havarti cheese
went out to dinner for my anniversary at a very nice restaurant in Newton, that I've been wanting to go to for , oh, 15 years. I had a salad with pears and walnuts and wild sea bass on a bed of pureed butternut squash, with more pieces of squash around it. Also had one roll and butter and we drank about 3/4 of a bottle of red wine. We shared an apple crisp with sour cream sorbet on top. I guess it's OK, since not too many people reach 32 years of marriage, but, still.

Congratulations on your anniversary. 32 years is a real accomplishment :) I bet it doesn't feel that long!
I met with my new personal trainer this morning and he set me up on a nutrition plan for the next six weeks. I'm pretty smart and never really eat much junk, but it's so nice to have a human being tell me what to do. There's just TOO much conventional wisdom out there sometimes. Zach is a cyclist too- a Cat 1 mountain bike racer, but a personal trainer by profession.
Here's what he's having me do to reach my 15-20 lb weight loss by April.
He wants me to do one of two things:
eat 5 300-400 calorie meals per day OR eat 3 400-500 calorie meals + 2 200-300 calorie snacks. I'm aiming for about 1800-2000 calories per day.
He wants my protein intake to be between 100-150 grams per day.
I should only be get 25 grams of carbohydrates per meal/snack, so ideally about 150 grams per day total.
Fat he was a little nebulous on, but based on what he said (quality fats from olive oil and nuts, seeds, and fish) it will probably be on the low end.
Here are some extra rules he gave me:
Glycemic carbs should come early-- grains, fruits. By dinner I should be getting carbs from veggies alone.
Lots of veggies and water all day long
Plan meals and snacks around workouts (this week I'm doing 6 hours low intensity cardio, 2 days of weight training and one low intensity 30 minute fasted workout)
No late night snacks/ minimal alcohol
I felt a little sorry for him that he ate the same thing every day during the winter, but I figure he must not like to cook very much and he's a national level mountain bike racer.
Anyway, I've got like a pound and a half of atlantic salmon in the fridge (we recently discovered we can buy fish at cost through James' workplace), so that will keep me well covered over the next couple days. I'm excited! I hope I can stick to the plan well this week :)

Steel-cut. I hate rolled oats, except the way DBF makes them, and even then, I'm not eating them pre-workout! I'm finding that I need fat and protein before a ride (or trainer workout), and all the fiber in oatmeal just sucks everything up. If I'm not riding/spending quality time with my trainer, oatmeal with almonds and dried cherries is fine.

I was at a daytime Christmas party and everybody was sitting around a big table with food. I organized different entertainment for the children: went for a walk in the near wood, collected leaves and pebbles to put on some cards later. And the biggest enjoyment: we baked together Christmas cookies, the children shaped them differently with rabbits, ducks, stars, hearts, etc. They served the cookies to the guests wearing white aprons and everybody was so happy and satisfied. They got applauses and pictures :D
I didn't eat cookies, the smell, the pleasure of baking them with the children and giving them to the others was enough.

No nuts, no cheese, no whole eggs, all of my dairy is non-fat...didn't even have any nut butter. Almonds and cheese went on this morning's shopping list for Trader Joe's. I am beginning to wonder if I should try to lower my carbs further and raise my fat (good fats, of course) and see if that is what's been going on with my weight plateau. This isn't the first time I've recently craved fats after a hard workout.
Yesterday:
B: Steel cut oats, egg whites, skim milk, coffee
S: apple and 2 tiny choc/mint truffles

D: more left-over yummy chicken/veggie/spinach soup with brown rice

Machengo cheese *is* expensive. But, I am so addicted to it. It's cheaper at Trader Joe's than anywhere else. Frankly, I don't mind paying for good food and good bicycles.

Really wanted to open my half-growler of Teddy Bear Kisses (chocolate Russian Imperial Stout), but I want to save that for tomorrow night. Broke pretty much every "eating rule" I have today, along with several really good beers. As it is Christmas I refuse to feel badly for feasting with friends, and will just have to be extra strict next week and not weigh until Friday. That last part will be hard... It wasn't so much quantity, I just couldn't stay out of the homemade sweets :o
B: cheese and crackers, celery with cream cheese, coffee
L: egg whites, coffee
S: "buckeyes", pretzel/white chocolate/peppermint things, fudge (not really that much of any of them but all of them...)

To elaborate a little more - it's sold here in the US in our dairy sections (next to milk and cream). It's what lots of people use in coffee or tea.
For some odd reason, it used to be called cereal milk - though it's rich enough that I can't imagine anyone would use it as milk in cereal.

Now, if I could just stop thinking about the bread I am not eating.... haven't entirely cut it out, but cut down a lot.

I hope you don't get as addicted as I am. But, I recently read something that said to the effect that it helps people, particularly women, to eat a little bit of full fat cheese every day, as it makes you feel full.
Now, if I could just stop thinking about the bread I am not eating.... haven't entirely cut it out, but cut down a lot.
A good amount of protein also has that affect, a high protein diet leads to less snacking because it sticks around. I hear you on the bread, it is hard for me to go without it and I suspect that my weight plateau is directly related to that. I won't give up my oats and brown rice, but I should probably really cut back on the bread.
Today:
B: 2 egg whites/1 whole egg omelet with 1/2 small chicken breast, minced onion, a bit of shredded light Irish cheddar, sprouted wheat bread, skim milk, coffee
L: Turkey BLT with sprouted bread, no-fat cottage cheese, skim milk
1 hour bike ride, then played on the mountain bike for a short time...
S: apple with a bit of PB
D: broiled garlic Tilapia, steamed broccoli, small amount of Machengo cheese (pretty good!), 1 beer.
S: a couple of chocolate covered peanuts with a couple of almonds and raisins.
