B: Steel-cut oats with PB, milk, sugar and dried cherries; chai (13oz) with milk and sugar

Yesterday:
B: Egg white/turkey bacon sandwich on 2 slices Ezekial bread. skim milk, coffee
3.5 hours mountain bike trail hiking/maintenance
s: banana
L: 12 inch Subway Club with 1 cookie
1.5 hour trail hiking/more trail maintenance
D: Romaine lettuce salad, Trader Joe's chicken garlic sausage with whole wheat bun, 1 beer
I think, technically speaking I had a large calorie deficit yesterday, but wasn't hungry in the evening so it must have been about right. It wasn't like there wasn't a lot of hiking with the trail work, which is easier.

Let's see...
B: Steel-cut oats with peanut butter, a splash of milk, some dried cherries and a bit of sugar; glass of milk+chai concentrate
24-mile ride
On ride: 3 shot blocks, about 48 oz water
Post-ride: Starbucks trip! Small green tea lemonade, followed by a small mocha coconut frappuccino thing (and since they screwed up my order, free drink coupon!)
~1 hour of yardwork (planting, mulching)
S: More water, handful of potato chips
L: Helping of leftover cod+topping from last night, three thin baguette slices, leftover potatoes, cherries, more water.
S: Small handful of wasabi peas
D: 2/3 of a beef Chipotle burrito, more water
D: leftover berries and 2 small scoops of vanilla ice cream
I'm finding oatmeal doesn't work as a pre-ride food at all for me--it doesn't get into my system fast enough, I think. I'm also finding I eat like a pig on ride days. I don't think it's because I think I "deserve" it--it's because I'm genuinely hungry!

Had that heavenly key lime flavored Larabar during my 6 mile walk this morning...
For a late lunch, my s.o James and I went to this amazing mexican place and I had three soft double wrapped corn al pastor tacos. Delish!
Not sure if dinner is on the docket at this hour! Feels earlier than it is!

OK, I'm back. I won't go into what I ate on vacation. Most of it wasn't awful, but it wasn't my usual, either. Lots of wine and beer, as well as 2 nights of gelato. Of course the breakfasts at the B and B were not spartan, but not the worst, either, in that they had turkey bacon, chicken sausage, and the portions were not huge.
Today
B: egg white omelette with lox and goat cheese, coffee
L: veggie burger patty on 2 slices of tomato, cole slaw, blueberries, half a cup of tomato red pepper soup
S: two pieces of Machengo cheese, whole wheat pita chips
D: "pizza" on whole wheat naan, with fig preserve pesto, goat cheese, toasted walnuts. I ate the whole naan; probably could have done with half.

I fail to see how two nights of gelato is a bad thing. (That was something I didn't take advantage of before I left Cleveland...)
B: Glass of milk with chai.
L: Bowl of cereal with milk
S: Cherries, slice of cake, wasabi peas
D: Sweet and sour chicken (homemade), with brown rice and some kind of vegetable (broccoli? Don't know what my mom threw in the pot when I wasn't looking!)
Dessert: Probably a slice of leftover cheesecake and fruit of some kind.

I've decided that I am eating too many carbs and too much fat on non-ride days. I've gained a little weight and body fat which I am not happy about - riding more will take care of that but I need to keep a tighter rein on my diet for non-ride days.
Yesterday:

S: Chobani non-fat yogurt
L: two thin slices whole wheat sourdough bread with two slices turkey bacon, sprouts and tomato. Apple.
S: banana
D: Cliff bar

Some people might handle the tofu just fine though!

This is good to know, I will add more avocado and leave out the tofu. It has that affect on me as well :o I love avocados but have been avoiding them for their high fat content - I know it is "good" fat - but if I just had small servings of this soup it would be fine. Thanks again! I get in a diet rut and this looks yummy :)

Just remember that avocados are jam packed with nutrients. I read somewhere that if there was one food that you were most likely to be able to survive off of successfully, it would be california avocados. It doesn't really surprise me. I like to top it with a splash of extra virgin olive oil. But still, if you're sensitive to all fats, definitely save up your fat grams for this delicious dish. Very worthwhile!

This mostly served to remind me that I was hungry. :o

Water retention after long or hard rides is just part of the body repairing itself. It's temporary. Don't sweat it. :D

Ha, I haven't had that time of the month in 9 years...
I do react to eating a lot of salt, but I don't eat a lot of it. I ate what would be considered "normal" for a day when I do a long ride. Other days, I am trying to stay away from too many carbs, even whole wheat. But, I have been gaining weight for about a week. I am also not feeling that well, basically pollen allergies gone haywire. Just got back from the doc, who feels because of my history with sinus infections and asthma, put me on a second round of antibiotics, in addition to all of the natural and OTC stuff I do. Not a good way to be feeling when I am starting a new job .
Obviously I will be resting today and at the most I will take a walk and do yoga tomorrow. I know I shouldn't have gone on an almost 50 mile ride yesterday, but...
Hoping my body is just going through some weird "thing" and will get back on track.

Well ****...what's your secret? BC? That must be nice! I used to not get my period for about 3 years, but I still noticed each month I had very very slight symptoms like bloating and being cranky once a month. Maybe it's just your body telling you you need to rest? We are living breathing things, we flux, if you know what i mean. ;)

Today:
I had a weird eating day.
Woke up at 5 and ate a bowl of Greek yogurt with blueberries and some whole grain flax cereal thrown in, with about 1/4 a Luna Bar.
Went on a 25 mile ride with Hirakukibou at 6. At about 17-18 miles I started feeling very bonky. It could have been my asthma, but I had the distinct feeling I needed food. We had coffee and I bought a blueberry muffin, but I only ate half... it was too sweet and I just can't eat that stuff anymore. Should have finished the Luna Bar instead.
Came home and ate a piece of Machengo cheese, an orange, and more coffee
very small salad with chicken for lunch, an apple
nuts and cranberries at 3:00
was absolutely starving when I got home at 4:45. Ate a small piece of whole wheat bread and a piece of string cheese

Do you think age makes that much of a difference in how much you need calorically?
I think it does...My parents are in their late fifties and are (well, mom is!) on a portion-size reduction kick. I'm living with them right now, and they give me approximately the same portion size they eat. Between the age difference and my riding, I'm snacking in between meals all the time. (Granted, the only time I don't eat between meals is if I get a giant cooked breakfast. Then I don't really eat anything for the rest of the day!)
I realize n=1 is not a representative sample size, but still.

SO, the last few weeks, every afternoon, I have been CRAVING potato chips in the worse way. I looked up "decoding cravings" and read that craving salty things indicated a deficiency in minerals and to eat more greens. I was already eating a salad with my lunch and dinner! I kept playing around with adding more greens to my diet. I finally decided to try a Green Smoothie (smoothie made with leafy green vegetables and frozen fruit). I have been having one with breakfast for the last few days. I can't believe it, but I no longer crave potato chips! And I have more energy in the mornings. I truly did not think eating spinach would satisfy my lust for Lay's Potato Chips, but it sure has. Weird.

I've been watching your food intake lately. How do you feel when you ride? I would never make it with what you are eating!
I dont know I am on this weird kick lately. All I wanted was fruit and I feel great. Although today had more substance. I have barely been drinking water even and peeing all the time. The past month I felt like I was hungry all the time, I was eating like 5 meals a day, I was riding a ton, and was gaining weight, muscle perhaps or just weight. Usually when I ride I gain weight and when i do yoga (I teach yoga) more I loose weight. I am about 110lbs. I kept thinking I was so hungry was cause I was going to get my period but then it didn't come and suddenly all I want is fruit. Weird huh. We'll see how long this kick lasts. I would think I would maybe loose a few pounds but not yet. Maybe it's all the beer and gin I've been drinking to make it balance out. That's the bad part about working at a bar. I have also eased my riding lately 20 mile rides instead of 50 for this past week to let my body rest and recover a bit. I am also vegan so I tend to eat a lot of fruit and veggies anyways. Everyone's body is different everyone thrives off of different fuels. We are human cells and organisms, our needs flux with the seasons and weather I believe as well. Thats why I find this post so interesting. Everyone has such interesting food habits and things that work for them.

Crankin - I love how you are able to indulge in small amounts of comfort food (like ice cream) that doesn't sabotage your day. You are my example :) I can get away with very small pieces of brownies or chocolate, but home made cookies, as well as ice cream, are a different matter. I dare not have them in my house except for when I am making cookies to take someplace. Sherbert or frozen fruit just aren't good ice cream craving subsitutes...

I can come over and help with the cookies. ;)
I know you're on a fairly restrictive diet, but I find a small amount (1 ice cream-shop scoop or less) of full-fat premium ice cream satisfies far better than a larger amount of other stuff. *sticks face back into her dish of Graeter's*

Oh I agree entirely, which is why I generally go to a good ice cream place and get a single dip cone when I HAVE TO HAVE ICE CREAM :D

Yea, the food at Monsoon is good and it's only about 3.5 miles from my house. But, we call them the "snobby" Indian restaurant... the service is kind of arrogant, so we usually get take out. Their other restaurant in Maynard is not like that.
This place was in Lexington and it was *really* good. I'll be going back.
Reesha

Yes they are very reserved at Monsoon. I also highly recommend India Palace just over the border from Westford in Chelmsford. Really fantastic food!
There's a great Thai place in Maynard that my uncle often takes me. Mmm Thai.
I had some lima beans for a pre-bbq lunch so I don't quite gorge on the unhealthy stuff. James works at a really fantastic posh restaurant and they are having their own bbq for their staff and staff families today. Yumm-OH.

Oh that won't be necessary, there won't be any left should I discover I can't be trusted around it :) I DID NOT, however, get my favorite. Maybe I should try that as a way to limit my ice cream addiction. Or not......:p
I'll be interested to see what additional tests reveal about my thryoid. Perhaps I've gotten away with eating ice cream like I do because it's been overactive for some portion of the last year (since I last had it checked). It seems odd though because I don't have most of the symptoms one generally associates with it. Here's hoping that it's nothing, although I think that might overly optimistic of me, given that I have a sister with Grave's disease. Maybe they just caught it really early.

In looking at your posts in this thread, I have to say I've been struck by how little you often eat and, in particular, how little protein you eat. Have you considered the possibility that your diet might explain your fatigue? I know that's a pretty loaded subject, and it certainly was for me at one time. I'd just encourage you to fuel your body sufficiently and worry less about the scale. Oh, and drink a lot of water. :)

I have to say for certain, any restaurant job where one is standing on their feet for an evening or day shift, does require burning off enough calories.
Watching servers run around in a moderately busy restaurant, I know that I couldn't have a job like that for a decade without burning out abit. Maybe that explains why my father could eat a large plate of rice with other stuff for dinner..for several decades of his life. He was full-time restaurant cook for over 5 decades of his life. And never overweight, actually abit underweight.

Oh dear. Thanks all for your concern, but really I feel pretty healthy honestly. Maybe I am wrong, but well, I have been vegetarian since I was 12, I am 25 now. So I think my body has adapted by this point. I have been on and off vegan since I was 20. Every once and a while I will crave a glass of milk, and I have one, them my stomach hurts, but I fulfilled my craving. My friend is cycle tourist and a fruitarian and he looks so healthy and always says how much energy he has. This probably should be another thread, but if you are interested I am sharing this info with you. I am not saying this is for everyone, and it definitely takes a certain mindset and way of life, but I think it is interesting. As for your comments, I don't take it personally, maybe my judgement is skewed a little, I feel like I eat a lot though. I definitely get 2000-2500 calories a day, even when i was on my fruit kick last week, and I FELT SO clean and energized.

On a second note, I think there is also a fine line that cyclist cross with food an weight since without proper nutrition you cannot cycle freely. And too much you get sluggish. My ex boyfriend was obsessed with everything he ate. He wanted to be at 150 lbs even when his body said he wanted to be at 165. "I go faster up the hills at 150, and then I win more races." He is a semi pro cyclist. Not that i am ANY sort of pro or even semi pro, I dont even race, I just like to ride really fast, a lot, and far. And it is always fun to beat an old man up the hill every once and a while. ;) I think it is finding the balance between mind and body. I applaud all of you who can truly indulge in you favorite flavor ice cream, trust me I wish I could do that with no regrets and pure enjoyment. Maybe someday, but not right now. Although this might all change on my bike ride across IOWA in 100 degree heat in 2 weeks. hehe.

Catrin, is that Harvest Grain mix any good? I've had a bag of it for a while but haven't made it yet. I might be near TJ's tomorrow morning; I'll pick some more up if it's good.
This is the first time I've used it, and it was better than straight couscous. I wanted a different grain to mix things up a bit. It took a little longer to cook than expected, and it took a bit more water than the directions called for. It stuck to my stainless steel pot...but it filled the need. I will probably buy it again, but not on a weekly basis.

Limewave--That combo strikes me as odd. It makes sense from a "food construction" standpoint, but I'm having difficulty wrapping my head around the "black beans" and "brownies" combination. In my mind, chocolate and legumes should stay far away from each other...except in Mexican food! (I've also never cottoned on to banana-based things, because all I taste is banana. If I wanted to taste banana, I'd have eaten one...and now the word "banana" has lost all meaning.) :D I'd be interested to hear about how it turns out, though.
What do I want for lunch...salad, tacos and salad, or fried rice and salad? I'll stop before it turns into a vegetarian version of the Spam Sketch.

I have been losing weight since January with only one brief plateau. The weight loss has been about a pound a week. The past week I have been on a trip in insufferably hot weather and have been riding little because of a neck/shoulder issue. For the first time in a long time keeping the calories down has been difficult. Yesterday I had a Dairy Queen kid cone. I also had three cookies and milk. And craved more junk. Ack! I ended the day with a Mike's Hard Lemonade to add 220 useless calories. But it was good! My total for the day was 1500 calories. I might even gain weight on a sedentary day on 1500 calories.
Today I am back on track. Apple and smoked fish for breakfast after walking two miles. Spring rolls sans meat for lunch--with plenty of veggies and fish sauce but few rice noodles. Black beans (with lots of Kale cooked in it) for dinner on a rice/dal homemade dosa. 1100 calories. I feel good and not near as hungry as yesterday.

I love to cook and eat and so does DH. Almost everything i make is easy, made from Cooking Light, particularly the fast recipes, or Food and Wine. I hardly use the recipes I used to make, even 10 years ago. We buy exclusively from the local farms at this time of year, and when I have fish, it's from a real fish market/butcher. Lots of ethnic food and I don't mind eating breakfast for dinner or a sandwich. Cooking is relaxing to me, after listening to people's problems all day...

Sounds great. I used to enjoy cooking but after a long period of severe depression I kind of lost any enthusiasm for it, and haven't found it again yet. Plus moving to the US 2 years ago, it took me a while to get used to new ingredients etc, and not being able to get some things I took for granted. Hopefully I will rekindle my interest soon.

I've never made it. I actually bought bamboo basket thing (that looks like a hat) that you cook the rice in, and it sat on the shelf for 5 or 6 years! I must have finally thrown it out, because I forgot I even had it until right now. We just get it at our local Thai place.
I had more ratatouille instead. Not quite the same thing.

It's probably best that I don't make it at home. I could easily eat a vat of it.

I can't really describe the taste. It's pretty smooth, not "cheesy." It's a Spanish cheese; get it at Trader Joe's for the best price.
yesterday:
whole wheat bagel, lox, low fat cream cheese, tomato (first native tomato of the season), banana and grapes
1/4 Luna bar before 22 mile ride, another 1/4 after
left over brown rice and black beans with veggies with left over chicken kabobs mixed in
dinner at restaurant: one appetizer sized tostada with chicken and lettuce on a baked tortilla, as well as a few chips and salsa
one chili relleno stuffed with black beans and a little cheese, brown rice, more black beans
2 glasses of sangria
not weighing myself today!

If it's the real article (Spanish manchego), apparently a bit sheepy. If it's the American version, a bit like cheddar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchego
The Spanish one is fantastic with cured meat...*whistles innocently*
Yesterday was bad, and it came back to bite me today. At least we finally went shopping...
B: 3/4 of a mint chocolate Clif bar, glass of milk, glass of OJ
S: 3 or 4 slices of bread with jalapeno hummus
L: BLT with cheese, water
S: small bit of lemon pound cake
D: Fried rice (with egg and chicken), salad
2 small frappucinos, one with 2%.
Apparently I didn't eat enough yesterday, because I woke up hungry then nearly bonked on today's ride...
