Yesterday:
"Breakfast": water. chipotle ranch-seasoned almonds (I'm not sure whether or not I liked them...)
"Second breakfast": A coffee frappucino and a slice of banana walnut bread.
D: I went to one of the Whole Foods "wine tastings" with my parents, so I had the equivalent of maybe a glass and a half of wine, plus various small bits of food. Dinner proper was a salad with a few shavings of parmesan (my mom's latest food obsession) and pine nuts, a salmon cake from the WF deli and a few slices of French bread with garlic hummus.

Today:
B: Bowl of cheerios with 1%, cup of hot chocolate made with 1%
20-mile ride food: a mint chocolate Clif bar, lots of water and my Fakerade (lemon juice, a bit of sugar and a bit of salt in water--doesn't upset my stomach so much)
Post-ride: Glass of Coke. I don't know why, but it staves off post-ride headaches. (Must be the caffeine+sugar.)
L: Baguette slices with garlic hummus.
S: A couple of the malformed mini pecan tarts my parents were going to take to a party. This batch stuck to the pan. Oh dear. :D (Completely wiped out the bike ride, but there we go.)
D: Thai style salmon: Baked salmon (I daren't risk cooking it in a pan at this point in my culinary career!) in a sauce made from sauteed onions, light coconut milk, chili paste, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, lime juice, cilantro and a bit of fish sauce, over basmati rice (it's what we have in the house), and snow peas (with a generous splash of sesame oil and a bit of red pepper).
S: An apple and a cup of white tea/mate blend with a bit of sugar.

Breakfast: Corn Chex w/ skim milk
Lunch: Sauteed spinach w/ EVOO and fresh garlic
Snack: Small Granny Smith Apple, slice of provolone

Breakfast: Sunflower seed whole meal rye bread from the baltic with a slice of aged provolone (weak i know)
I was pretty grouchy and forgot about lunch.
Dinner: 6 oz sliced top round london broil with roasted roma tomatoes, onions and garlic; 1/2 cup potato gnocci with pesto

Yesterday was a better day though:
breakfast: 1 banana with 1 tbsp peanut butter; 1 slice baltic bread with a slice of provolone
lunch: 1/2 cup cottage cheese; cucumber, onion, tomato salad with olive oil and red wine vinegar and 6 oz of tongol tuna
dinner: 1 piece of whole grain rye knackebrod with cod roe and 2 hard boiled egg whites (1 yolk), 1 green pepper cut up into veggie sticks

B: Cereal with 1% milk
L: Salad made with 2 handfuls packaged "herb salad" and a handful of baby spinach (don't particularly care for the stuff raw) with a generous sprinkling of walnuts and feta. Handful of cherries.
S: Creamy peanut butter sandwiched between 6 Ritz crackers.
D: Chicken with garam masala (mostly), corn+cilantro+jalapeno+garlic salad with a melted butter-lime juice-spices dressing, wilted baby spinach, half a peach with balsamic glaze and a bit of blue cheese.
I'll probably go for a walk later and get a small something from Starbucks, and have some cherries and the other half of the peach.

brekkie: rice, pickled turnip top (green stem), left over fish from last night
lunch: rice, red miso soup with tofu and scallions
snack: bowl of cherries
supper: home grown tomatoes with dressing made from home grown garlic, meyer lemon juice..., sauteed shishito (japanese pepper) home grown, blue lake string beans also home grown, and salmon salad.

and about 4 mugs of chai with honey. my calorie count is off the scale :D :D

Anyone care to revive this thread? I was just reading around and found it. I've spent entirely too much time sitting here reading it. It's very interesting!
I don't eat breakfast. Unless we are on vacation or something.
Every morning, for my breakfast, I have a Mango Tango (Odwalla drink)
A few hours later, I usually eat something light...cucumbers dipped in salsa, carrots, an apple or sometimes hummus on one tortilla (folded in half)
Then I eat a normal dinner. No telling what they may ever be. I usually snack at night. It could be some chips and salsa or something sweet (if I made dessert)

Currently, I am on a raw diet with mostly liquid as my main "food". I am doing this for detoxing purposes only and will go back to regular food within a month. I find it very interesting that I am hungrier and want more filling foods in the cold weather. Eating all raw/juicing, I feel very, very cold (deep inside myself). Summer months I have done this, I was fine.

I know once I start riding full-time again, I will be hungrier too. I didn't mind as much what I ate when I knew I was exercising, but I found that I gained weight quick with bike-riding, which was interesting to me. I need to be careful about the food choices I make during that time.

Anyway, thanks for listening and if anyone cares to add more to this, that would be fun. What did you eat today? :)

That makes sense that you want more filling and warm food during the winter. It's comforting and fights the cold that you're feeling from the environment. Most animals hibernate during this time and put on extra weight. I think most people eat less during the summer. I, myself, find it hard to eat much hearty food during the summer when it's hot. I prefer cold and light things - love smoothies, fruit, cold sandwiches, etc. I've never had much of a problem with weight but I've listened to a lot of people talk about their losing weight tips and it seems like your diet may be opposite of what's recommended for weight loss. Most people recommend eating breakfast to jump start your metabolism for the day, and eat the bigger meals earlier in the day and have a small dinner. And to stop eating by 8pm at night. Just something to think about if you're interested in trying that.

So far today I've only eaten cream of wheat made with soy milk and brown sugar. I'm about to make some blueberry streussel muffins. I typically eat lunch late, like 3 in the afternoon. That's usually my biggest meal of the day, and then I usually have a light dinner or snack. I'm pretty bad most of the time about eating three square meals, I usually have a good breakfast and lunch and then by dinner I'm feeling lazy:) My husband usually cooks dinner so that's good, but on the days he's working I don't eat a good dinner.

Oh, I'm not trying to lose weight. Not at all. I've never had a weight problem really. I have a fast metabolism and lose weight after having a baby easily on my own within a year or two. I am eating this way now, like I mentioned, to detox. I just had a major surgery in Dec. and had some pretty hard-core narcotics in my system, which in turn gave me massive headaches. I am trying to clear some of that out of my system. :)

I can't imagine not eating breakfast. This morning I got up at 6 and didn't eat until 8 AM, as I was busy canceling clients, watching the weather, before settling for a snow day. I was not feeling too good by the time I ate. I don't eat huge breakfasts (think Denny's), but I do eat good ones. And I don't complain when DH gets up and makes waffles on a weekday. The key for me is lots of protein at breakfast, which is totally opposite of what I used to do. Egg white omlettes, tuna, cheese, turkey bacon, Greek yogurt and fruit, regular eggs, with an occasional whole wheat bagel or waffle.

Today:
B: egg whites, cheese, navel orange, V-8, 2 cups of coffee
S: little pack of Trader Joe's trail mix with cranberries and almonds
L: salad with romaine lettuce, chicken breast, tomato, red pepper, chick peas, goat cheese,w/champagne vinegar and olive oil, cup of low sodium tomato soup, slice of thin slice whole wheat bread with hummus
S: 2 slices of low salt ham

Currently drinking a glass of red wine (hey, it keeps my HDL high and my LDL low) and thinking about dinner which is going to be a Mexican chicken and low fat cheese soup

I have to have breakfast, and snacks! Vital for my diabetes management and also weight control.

Breakfast today was a cup of steel-cut oats with blueberries and a tablespoon of peanut butter with a little milk.

S was an apple with a .5 cup of non-fat cottage cheese

Lunch (main meal today since I am iced in at home) was a skinless chicken breast stirfry with lots of yummy veggies and a bit of brown rice.

S was a cup of low-fat strawberry Kefir

Dinner will probably be a cup of black-bean soup and a salad. Considering a beer as well...

B: A bowl of steel-cut oats with cinnamon and a tablespoon or so of maple syrup.
L: A bowl of tuna pasta salad, with lots of veggies.
S: An apple
D: The plan is to distribute the one leftover serving of spinach and tomato pasta with sausage between the two of us. I've got some past-their-prime Brussels sprouts I'm going to saute with garlic, and a chicken breast that I'm going to cut in half and season for the main protein part of the meal.

S: Nut Thins (a rice cracker) with roasted red pepper hummus, and a handful of red grapes

I think it's important to remember that every body is different and what is good for one person may not be for another. If I could eat a breakfast and feel good, I would. But if I eat before ten, ever, my stomach cramps and I feel awful. This is what works best for me. I prefer liquids only in the morning and it works well for my body. I drink healthy things, like the odwalla drinks or OJ with emergen-c. I do not consume caffeine or eat badly.

I eat a light lunch and then eat my heavier meal at the end of the day because this is how my body functions/works best. I feel best when I eat this way.

I love reading what everyone eats, it gives me ideas of what to eat each day.

Yesterday, I had Cereal (Cheerios) for breakfast

For lunch had a turkey pita full of veggies with feta and tzaziki sauce.

For dinner had a chicken sandwich with garden salad and raspberry vinegret dressing.

I snacked inbetween with cucumbers and carrots.

Reading a lot of these daily meals, I notice an astonishing lack of veggies.

Eat your veggies folks! They're low in calories and full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber that we need every day.

Not that I'm perfect, by any means, but I try to eat at least a few servings of veggies a day.

Today for me:
B - cereal w/ fruit, protein powder, and almond milk; 2 c. coffee
S - organic yogurt (banilla)
Gym time - ran 3.25 miles on treadmill
L - kale & brown rice wrapped in ww tortilla, topped with salsa and cheese, herb tea
S - 1 apple + carrot/celery/apple homemade juice
D - turkey, bean, veggie, & tomato stew on quinoa, salad, 1 Miller Lite
S - Hot chocolate

S - Vanilla soy yogurt.

Lunch + Dinner: Lentil-pecan pâté, apple, and red onion confit on rosemary croccantinis, a vegan French dip with caramelized onion and Portobello mushroom (as the meat) on an herbed baguette with roasted garlic mushroom au jus sauce, sweet potatoe fries, and a little bit of my husband's falafel wrap and quinoa salad.

Dessert: Three of the most amazing vegan truffles I have ever had - one chocolate with raspberry ganache, one chocolate with orange cream, and one chocolate with coconut milk caramel (My husband and I were celebrating Valentine's Day since we'll both be working).

S - Lots of organic "ritz" style crackers.

I'm afraid to put this up

I'll do yesterday:

B: 2 eggs fried 1 tsp EVOO, 3 strips of turkey bacon, 1 piece of whole wheat toast with brummel and brown, coffee with sugar free hazelnut creamer

L: Costco dawg! Loads of kraut, sorry its the German in me, I can't help it. :) with a diet coke; I'm a sucker for a $1.50 lunch!

snack?: piece of lasagna, slice of pumpkin bread

after workout snack: cup of homemade yogurt with strawberry preserves in it

D: 2 small chicken breasts pan cooked with a little EVOO and a cup of cottage cheese

I must add I also did 90 minutes of spinning and I am doing a lot of strength training right now so I am intentionally adding more protein; I am aiming for a net of about 1500 calories on days I'm not working out and 1700 on days I do. That will go up when the weather gets better and I can do LONG rides. I'm training for a brevet but I'm also trying to lose weight at the same time, not a easy thing I'm discovering.

Sure! I make thing up most of the time :-) Thus, LOTS of variation!

2 ish cups of thick cut oats
6 egg whites
about 1/2 cup of almond milk, or whatever milk
Cinnamon
Sweetener (optional: My mom uses splenda or truvia, I use about 1 tsp of brown sugar and 1 tbsp of honey)

Optional stuff! I (or my mom who loves my random recipies) have tried all kind of variatons

Smash 2 bananas, and chop 1/2 cup of walnuts

Raisins or other dried fruit

PB2 (dried peanut butter) or some almond butter

Pumpkin!

My personal favorite....chocolate chips

Two options: 8x8 glass pan for 30 minutes at 350
or muffins for about 25-30 minutes

As you can see...I make things up. The point is that you are baking the oats in egg whites and milk with whatever flavor you want!!

I hope you enjoy! I would love to hear if you come up with another variation!

Here's why:
a serving size is a very small amount
the amount of fat is very small

and for food labeling, definition of 'fat free' is:
less than 1/2 gram fat in a serving

I go both routes, I do love certain Asian sauces and will sometimes use those towards the end of the process. Sometimes I will just add a little sesame oil at the end to enhance the flavor. The nice thing about stir-fry is that it is so wonderfully versatile!

I typically use a tablespoon of a spicy bottled sauce with our stir fries, along with a bit of soy sauce. I also add in ginger, garlic and red pepper flake. One recipe I follow calls for a slurry of chicken broth and corn starch to be added in at the end, and I like the results I get with that. But I can't say that I'm counting calories when I make it. I figure it's a lot better than what I would get at a Chinese restaurant. Still, I wish they were a bit healthier.

Just be sure to add it at the end. It has a low smoke point, so it's not the best oil to actually cook with.

I make stir frys different ways too. Sometimes with broth and corn starch - then I add garlic, red pepper flakes, to my stir fry.

Sometimes I have bottled sauce and use that, but I try to limit the amount since it is so high in sodium. But, it is yummy.

Love stir frys. My husband always complains that he isn't getting enough calories so I tell him to have some ice cream or an extra cookie after dinner!

I need to get "back on the wagon" when it comes to veggies! We haven't really been shopping this week, so the only veggies in the fridge are a questionable-looking bell pepper and three rather limp carrots.

It's a good idea to keep frozen veggies on hand for times like these. We buy organic veggie blends (plus plain broccoli cuts and green beans) at the food co-op, so we are never totally without a veg. choice for dinner. Often frozen veggies are higher in vitamins and minerals than fresh, particularly if you can't shop at a farmer's market. When veggies have to be shipped long distances, then sit in your fridge for days, they can lose nutritional value quickly.

Thanks! I know meatloaf doesn't sound romantic in the least, but my meatloaf is pretty darn good if I do say so myself.

If I'm being completely honest, I have to admit that we had Indian on Saturday night, too. So, this weekend was not the best as far as healthy eating goes.

When we got married last year, we had a very private (just us and the friend who married us) "ceremony" in Madison, Indiana. We had no interest in a wedding, so that's what we settled on. Anyway, we had planned to spend spend the following night (Valentine's Day night that is) in Madison as well, until we heard reports that they were expecting 10 inches of snow! So, we hightailed it back north and stopped in Columbus at our favorite Indian restaurant on the way home. We just had to relive that memory. Unfortunately, some of our happy memories involve caloric food.

We made the giant skillet chocolate chip cookie from 101cookbooks.com. And then paired it with some ice cream. It was ahmazing. I'm going to have to freeze the rest of the cookie because I have no self control when I go near it.

I was VERY bad for dinner yesterday. I had hoped that getting something relatively healthy from Jimmy John's before the "Ladies Night" at the LBS would help me to resist the goodies I knew would be there. While I didn't succumb as badly as I could have, I was still pretty bad. Scales were up 3 pounds this morning - probably from the sodium :o

No use kicking myself over something that happened yesterday, today is another day:

S: forgot

Not at all, but that would be totally brand dependent. I buy mine from trueprotein.com and get the microfiltrated vanilla flavor/unsweetened. So, it probably does add a touch of vanilla taste, but I think they make an unflavored one as well. Whatever the taste, I like it, and I still taste the cereal above all. I like the texture too. To me it's basically unnoticeable.

Just as an aside, I've been very happy with trueprotein.com. They sell a zillion different types of protein powders, you can create your own custom blend or buy one of theirs, add or not add all types of sweeteners and additions, buy any quantity, and prices are way better than anything I found in the stores. They will ship in a food-grade bag, so packaging is less wasteful than big bottles as well. I have no affiliation with them but am a very satisfied customer!

Thanks for the recommendation, I will check into them. My dr and nutritionist want me to get a very large amount of protein - and my body does respond to that (and my diabetes). Sometimes the problem is introducing variety into my diet while maintaining the same level of protein and keeping fat content under control. Basically I want something that I can add 25-30 grams of protein with (preferably) no flavoring. Thanks, I have some research to do!

Ah, a 1.5 oz bag - isn't that bad enough? I love potato chips a lot though so you are close as to how many I could really eat if I had access to them!

That's why I don't buy the things have have them at home. The office bought chips the last time they went to Sams and I just could NOT RESIST! Resistance is futile!

I made peanut butter cookies (low fat) with a ton of chocolate chips. I quit counting after 6 of them. I ate 3 straight out of the oven!!

I seriously need an intervention. There is a reason I rarely bake anything. Absolutely no self control.

Got a bit a sugar headache too!

I have to get back to this thread. Although I didn't eat horribly during my long weekend in AZ, the last day did me in. I feel lumpy and my clothes are tight. It's mostly a question of exercise with me, but although I had planned for an outdoor ride this weekend, I am not sure it will happen now. Nordic skiing is over unless I travel up north... hiking doesn't seem to maintain my weight and I can barely tolerate the trainer, although I do sweat!
Today so far
B: egg white omelete with low fat cheddar, 2 slices turkey bacon, tea, V-8
S: string cheese
L: an orange, a can of tuna in olive oil with roasted red peppers

I've not been very good lately...I think it is the weather that has had me a little down - and that increases temptation to eat what I shouldn't.

Today:

B: roasted chicken breast + 2 pieces sprouted rye toast and 1 cup of skim milk (over-slept and had to grab something ready to eat)

S: no-fat chocolate yogurt

L: roasted chicken breast, steamed mixed veggies, small spinach tortilla.

S:? Don't yet know

I am planning a 70-90 minute bike ride if I can fit it in & I've something at church tonight.

D: depends on the time I have - either an egg-white omelet and light salad, or more chicken breast and veggies.

I tend to roast 5-6 skinless chicken breasts in advance so it is quick, then I just need to worry about veggies. I typically get more creative on the weekend.

Red, the lumpy feeling came before my flight. Although I was active over the winter, I think not belonging to a gym is catching up to me. I still exercise 5 days a week, at least, but somehow my some of my trainer workouts get skimped on, as opposed to spin class and I've neglected my core.
Spoke, honestly I feel my eating is "good" almost all the time. I don't consider it "bad," if I have dessert once a week, or drink a glass of wine a few times a week. But, it seems like I can hardly do those things anymore without gaining inches or pounds. I go out to eat a lot, try to get healthy stuff (no fried food at all), but going out, even a couple of times a week puts temptations in front of me, like white flour products (i.e. really good bread), pasta, etc. I can avoid that at home by planning my meals to be low GI. I know I still look thin, but it is getting harder and harder to keep my weight where I want it.
I just need to get back on my bike and do some rides that are at least an hour...

Good lord, my diet looks disgusting in comparison. My students returned to school from a week's holiday today and my meals reflect how I feel about this Monday. The golden arches are involved and its demoralizing. But I've cooked my meals for tomorrow and here's what it involves:

Breakfast: Toast and peanut butter. Green tea

Snack: Oreos and crackers. (The Oreos will mostly be eaten by my students)

Lunch: Brown rice porridge, stir fried veggies, steamed fish with ginger and soy, green bean omelette

Pre-training snack: Cheese and multigrain crackers from Ikea.

Post-training meal: Fried rice and chocolate milk.

Nah, probably not. It is probably just a fluctuation in water weight, hydration.

Well, I can't eat much less than I do now. I guess I need more and/or longer exercise? The cycling season has started, but we had snow yesterday (not any left on the ground, thankfully), more snow predicted for Thursday. and then cold all weekend So, I may have to put the bike on the trainer for the weekend. But, I am still running, walking, doing core work, weights, and yoga. It's just not the same as long rides a few times a week, like when it gets warmer. I definitely cannot run for 2 hours like I put in on the bike on Sunday.

good gravy I had a whole box of Thin Mints today.:eek::eek::eek:
SINCE LUNCH!! :eek::eek::eek:
Must be TOM because I'm eating everything I see (dropped candy on the floor, half-eaten chips in the teacher's lounge, old french fries I dropped in the car last year). ;)

Some days I just totally lose all control. And the day started off so well, Morningstar Farm bacon, egg, turkey. Snack was an apple and an orange. Lunch was even healthy with some turkey on gluten-free bread and a tomato and carrot sticks.
Someone gave me that box of cookies and I devoured it like I'll never see another cookie again. Good grief, I'm disgusted with myself...

I feel your pain - I could cut out beer and wine, but I like it too much! We had about 7-9 inches yesterday so I snow shovelled. Does that count?

Anyway, I'll play tennis tomorrow and hopefully do more stuff this week. I have tennis for Saturday and Sunday planned. The problem with me is that after bike racing for 19 years, I think I developed a very efficient machine that doesn't need that much food. I do know that when I biked, toward the end, I did not need to eat as much as I did when I was younger.

Anyways, I will try to ride more as we get better weather to add to the tennis and hopefully, I can get rid of the 8 pound 50 year bulge around my middle!

Tri Girl - it happens to the best of us! All we can do is get back on the bandwagon with our next meal! Were they thin mints really good?

I don't like them so I would not have eaten them; but if you like them, it might have been worth it!

they were good, but I feel disgusting now (inside and out). I'll wind up eating a dozen Tums to counteract the heartburn I'll have for sure. Most days I'm good- but sometimes I just can't stop myself. I'm not a binge eater. Usually I'm pretty even-keel. Every few months I swear it's like a light switch goes on and I devour whatever is in sight. I hate when I do this...

Soup for dinner (if I'm even hungry at that point).

(((Tri Girl))) I think you need a hug. Whatever happened to bringing a teacher an apple? There's no such thing as will power, not when cookies are concerned.

today:

bowl of oatmeal with blueberries and milk
2 slices of whole wheat toast and cottage cheese
Vietnamese Bun (rice noodle dish) with fried tofu
a blueberry Greek yogurt
half an orange (if you're wondering about my halves of fruit, I always share with my bf. It's like sacrilege to eat a piece without giving him half, especially oranges)
6 potato pierogies, sauteed cabbage and carrots
I'll have more fruit tonight, probably an apple and an orange (or half ).

Gosh i don't know where you guys get your self control- more power to you... I would feel like I was starving if I only ate those little amounts of things. Are you all counting out like three almonds?  ;)
I tend to really crave lots of carbs and fats during the winter, and I gain some weight during the cold months...then I notice my body craves fruits and salads more in the warm months, and it's easier to be active and eat less fat then...I must be a bear. I could eat a whole salmon with my bare hands and teeth right now.
I have been eating daily servings of seaweed and kelp since the Japan disaster. I've always loved eating seaweed a couple times a month, and have several dried varieties in my cupboard, so I figure what the heck go for it!- now I'm eating a serving every day. i actually like eating seaweed even more than kale, for instance.
I love seaweed in warm broth with a pinch of sea salt...love the 'beach aroma' and even like the little grains of sand at the bottom... must have lots of good trace minerals. :)

I love seaweed; let's just say if I ate it, I would seriously lose a lot of weight, because it had an instant GI effect on me . Not good.
I eat good, healthy food and I also tend to gain in the winter, if I don't watch it. If I ate everything I craved, I estimate an extra 5-10 lbs if I didn't pay attention. The older I get, the less carbs I can eat. But, once the cycling season starts, it's less of a concern. And, I'm still very active in the winter.
Lisa, you've seen me eat... you know I'm not someone who totally restricts my food!
