Where do you get that tea?
I make it :) Whole Foods sells Navitas 100% Cacoa Powder (http://navitasnaturals.com/product/441/Cacao-Powder.html) and Nibs, I get both. It is actually cheaper at the local Whole Foods than from Amazon - the nibs are a bit more expensive, I get the 8 ounce size. I've experimented with how much to add to my hot peppermint tea, and sometimes I toss in a few Cacoa Nibs as well, they are a little chewy :) I mainly use the powder for tea and coffee, but I've a few recipes that I use it in as well. The 8 ounces, even though I use it daily, lasts me roughly 6-7 weeks. Perhaps a bit longer if I don't make the chocolate chili very often as I use more than the recipe calls for.
The tea is very satisfying, but if you try it don't be shy about how much you put in. I use far more in my tea than I do coffee - about twice as much. If you do decide to try the nibs, look at the label carefully as they do sell a sweetened version. To me that defeats one of the purposes for using it! I've never seen a sweetened version of the powder however, which is good. I've heard of some grinding the nibs in a hand-coffee grinder and treating it as coffee - but of course that is the nibs (they look like shavings of the bean), not the powder.

You know, I have never been in a local Whole Foods; in fact, the only one I've been to was in Boulder, in 2002, when we took DS #2 to look at CU. There is one in the next town, so I guess I'll head over.

Whole Foods charges just under $10 for 8 ounces of the powder, and I think I paid $11 for the nibs (though you probably just want to start with the powder). You might be able to find a lower price that would justify the shipping online - I live about a 15 minute drive so I just get in the car.
On the subject of nibs. These are roasted pieces of the cacoa bean, and I am here to tell you that a few in hot tea or coffee makes them soft and yummy-chewy. I am going to grind them for some "choffy", basically treat them like coffee. We will see how it works ;) I suspect the nibs will work even better in my chili and a dry rub that I already use the powder for!

Weight was down this morning by 3 pounds, I KNOW I've not been eating enough from being sick but goodness, probably just less water retention since I've not been on my usual workout schedule this week. This is not the way I want to hit my weight goal! Rest day today, though part of me really wants to go out and do some trail running. Sunny day, supposed to reach the high 50's today...but still have a pretty deep cough so...nope. I want to be 100%, or as close to it as I can manage, for my group training Tuesday, and kettlebell training on Wed. I worked out yesterday with kettlebells at home and am resisting that idea now.
B: 2 eggs over a few ounces of roasted butternut squash
L: crab salad (crab, veggies, an egg and homemade mayo)...there wasn't that much of it but I couldn't eat it all
I need some calories though, will probably have a banana and a couple squares of chocolate in a bit, or else some banana and coconut manna :)
D: don't know yet, will probably roast some chicken and kale with the remainder of some spaghetti squash, small salad with home-made dressing.

Weight down yet again this morning, at this rate I MIGHT hit 120 this week. I still think it is just due to water loss and being off my usual fitness schedule. I am getting back to that, slowly but surely as I recovery from this allergy/asthmatic bronchitis/plague thing I've fought for the last solid week. Whatever my weight is currently doing, it will bounce back to the usual range once I am recovered. I am making an effort to eat a bit more just in case my caloric intake is lower than I think it is:
Yesterday:
B: 5 ounces of my current ground pork/veggie/egg casserole
Group training session that featured a functional movement screen and correctives - much lower intensity level than usual
L: Big a*s salad with lots of veggies, pecans, raisins, chicken and home-made dressing
D: bone broth with lots of veggies, chard, more chicken and roasted butternut squash on the side with a bit of butter + a few pecans. Small amount of 85% dark chocolate
Today:
B: See yesterday, but a bit more of it
L: Big a*s salad with lots of veggies, pecans, chicken and home-made dressing
I do have a kettlebell training group at lunch, so I brought some extra egg casserole for a snack. Protein shake would be fine, but trying to get my calories up a bit...
D:???? Roast chicken and veggies if I don't feel like cooking, we will see
I AM starting to finally feel better though :)

B: 2 egg omelette with spinach and grated cheddar, 1/4 avocado, an orange, coffee
L: chicken salad with walnuts and dried cranberries
rode to meet friends for coffee, 7.2 miles, had some decaf, then rode 14 miles home, the long way
S: slice of raisin spelt bread with sun nut butter
D: 2 chicken thighs, sauted and then baked with fennel and green onions. Whole wheat cous cous. 2 squares dark chocolate
Catrin

The thighs baked with fennel sounds interesting Crankin - but I always seem to just narrowly avoid an ER visit every time I try to start cutting fennel. Fennel and Jicama
Dinner turned out to be another healing bone-broth "soup" (for lack of a better name) that was filled with chopped sweet potato, roasted chicken, an egg, chard and spices. Followed with a bit of 85% dark chocolate :) Still had to do the protein shake though to bump my numbers up a bit. Made another batch of mustard-glazed baked chicken thighs for the next few days, and set some things into the fridge to thaw for chili.
KB training session was far more a butt-kicker than my group yesterday was. Very different instructor, but he has started to lay it on me - and my body took it better than I had hoped. I seem to be on the mend. Now I just need to lose the last of this cough...

I use my biggest knife to cut the fennel bulb.
half a banana before boot camp
B: small bowl of whole wheat organic flakes and almond milk with blueberries and a slice of Machengo cheese... I was rushed to get to the school I go to on Thursdays
L: I met my old boss for lunch. Had a very small and nouveau type salad Nicoise, but I did sample one piece of pita and some sort of won ton thing with hummus and a few olives, more coffee
S: 6 inch whole wheat pita with hummus. I had to go to the office at 5 and stay until almost 7, and that lunch was not doing it!
D: salmon salad with arugula, 2 squares dark chocolate
Crankin
04-05-2014, 03:48 AM
B: 2 egg omelette with cheddar and avocado, strawberries, coffee
rode to work
S: half a banana at 10, half a Lara Bar before riding home. I didn't get out of there until 12:30, I was starving
L: tuna with arugula, red pepper, vinaigrette
D: went out to a great restaurant before theatre night. I shared an organic beet salad with DH, which was awesome. Had scallops with parsnip puree and some other veggies. glass of red wine.

Still having problems with a lack of appetite, but I am starting to recover from the creeping plague. As it turns out the medication our employee clinic gave me was guaranteed to really exasperate my asthma, things got pretty dire. I am on the mend now though :) I won't return to that clinic again. If they don't know how to treat respiratory problems for someone with asthma then I won't put myself at risk.
Today:
Brekkie: eggs scrambled with spinach, bacon, coffee
Solo KB workout, pretty intense and it felt pretty darn good (even with the coughing). Felt good to be able to move again without it feeling like it is going to kill me
L: forgot about it :(
So - very early dinner: planning on some chili and a salad, along with a small serving of organic Dark Chocolate Coconut Bliss (basically just creamy frozen coconut milk, cacoa and a bit of vanilla and agave)
If I have an evening snack it will be some bone broth with veggies.

S: I ate half a banana at around 11. I was starving already.
L: I decided not to add the weight of full tupperware to my pannier today, so I went to the hospital cafeteria to get something. I tried the salad bar, instead of the prepared salad I've had before. Meh, not enough protein. That, with my apple was not enough.
S: had the second half of the banana at 2 and a Lara Bar at 4. By 6, when I was getting ready to leave and ride home, I snagged 2 animal crackers from the kitchen.
D: ate the left over chicken and fennel, with pureed parsnips. 2 squares dark chocolate.

Brekkie was the usual eggs, veggies, coffee
Lunch: big a*s salad with mixed greens, an assortment of veggies, roast chicken thigh, a few pecans and raisins with small amount of homemade dressing
30 minutes trail running/walking. More running than walking :)
D: last of the current batch of chili over spaghetti squash. 1/2 cup dark chocolate "Coconut Bliss" ice cream. Yummy, but I think a need a new rule for ice cream. I only crave it when it is in my freezer. So...from now on I have to actually go out to get a small dish of ice cream the rare times I actually really want it. AND, IMO, Indianapolis has one of THE best gourmet independent purveyors of ice cream out there :) It is too much of a temptation in my freezer and that is just too much sugar. VERY good though :) I've been allowing too much sugar to creep back into my diet. My weight is still lower from when I was sick but it would be nice to not re-gain the 3 pounds I lost when I was ill.

Of course :) not. I'm not Kosher (I love pork), but I do try and keep Passover. We either have or go to a Seder every year, and tonight we are having a Seder for our cycling friends, even though it's not the first or second night. We went to friends' on Monday night and I just couldn't face making a dinner on Tuesday, which is my busiest day of the work week. The male half of our cycling friends is Jewish, although having a Seder seems to be the only tradition his family kept, it means a lot to him that we do this for him. Some years they are here with my family, other years it's just us 4.
Every year, when I take out the Seder plate and matzah covers my kids made at the Tri City JCC/Jewish Organization of Tempe Pre-School, I start crying. I cannot bring myself to buy a real seder plate, after almost 30 years. Good times!

Today was Pascha (Orthodox Easter), that actually fell on western Easter today - that only happens every 5-6 years.
Brekkie: eggs scrambled with veggies, fresh side, coffee
crazy conditioning group workout - and the last official "Funday" workout, I am moving to another coach who specializes in kettlebell lifting + conditioning, joint mobility, and working with the "active aging athlete".
L: a bit of chicken thigh and a little milk.
Afternoon church service followed by a HUGE parish get-together with fellowship, lots and lots of good food and beer. I didn't even attempt to keep track, it was my first "cheat" meal in months and I enjoyed it! My "cheat" involved some wonderful homemade cheesecake and rather more meat than I would have normally eaten :)
I've posted a lot about my typical morning breakfast egg/veggie casserole/frittata/whatever it is. Here is a picture of the one that just went into the oven. 19 eggs, 16 cups of vegetables and ground pork. Also lots of spices! Amazing how good it is, and it comes out differently every time depending on the veggies/spices I've on hand. Obviously this provides far more than a couple of meals and it isn't just for breakfast! I will also be making some Czech meatballs tonight as well, and perhaps some homemade mayo if I've the time but I suspect that will wait until tomorrow night.

Did my first juice today, celery, apples, kale, ginger, lemon, and cucumber. It was fantastic!

Brekkie, usual breakfast casserole, coffee
Last group training with my wild coach - starting next week I will be with my KB coach twice a week rather than once. I really like my new coach's style, very different and I think he is a better fit for me in the long run - though I did greatly enjoy the crazy workouts from my first coach. The new one is more like a guru, very understated and educates/gets us to think for ourselves. JUST as intense as my first coach - just a very different style and many more years of experience. I've already learned a lot from him. Session followed with protein shake. I've saved many of the crazy workouts from the last 22 months for my own use.
L: pastured ham, steamed veggies
D: more ham (butter lettuce wrapped with fermented pickles, roasted veggies, a cup of hot bone broth (for the gelatin) with salt/pepper - yumm!
Today: Rest day
B: The usual, see above
L: more of the same (need to go shopping) with leftover roasted veggies from last night, fermented ramp kraut
D: A salmon/avocado/veggie "roll", steamed veggies, and a beer

B: Last of the current frittata, coffee
Solo KB Clean/BB Deadlift workout - followed by protein shake
In the Orthodox Church, the week after Pascha/Easter is called 'Bright Week', pretty much we feast all week. I've not done that, but I DID drop by a Farmer's Market after my workout and among other things, bought a dish with 1/2 cup of THE most incredible gourmet ice cream! "Gorgonzola Pecan", sounds bizarre but I can't express just how good it was.
L: At the same market - another frittata and a nice salad.
S: 1 beer
Dinner - planning on roasted chicken and steamed veggies.

I did about 45 minutes of hill walking on the tradmill and functional stuff with the weights, stretching from my winter training DVDs.

They're pretty easy. I use the same amount of oatmeal as egg whites, mix it in a blender. I add a little bit of maple syrup and some cinnamon. It cooks up like a crepe and then you can put whatever you want on them. I like peanut butter. They can also be wrapped and eaten as a portable snack later.

Tomorrow morning I am heading out early for a road trip, so will hit my home kettlebell herd for a workout first thing. I am unaccustomed to working out BEFORE eating, we will see how that works out - it just streamlines my schedule if I do it that way. I am enjoying being able to follow up with my KB coach's training suggestions at home as well as at the gym. Starting already to train for a competition early next year. I've a long ways to go, but I am really enjoying myself! REALLY enjoying my new coach's style - he is much more like a mentor than a drill sargent. He also knows when to pull me back so I don't hurt myself. THAT is why I need to work with professional peeps!

I am starting a month-long intermittent fasting experiment that will also have a sugar detox rolled up into it. I've started a journal at Mark's Daily Apple to track things, if anyone is interested in following it you can find the journal here (http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/thread107446.html#post1487497). My kettlebell sport coach is encouraging me to try this out as nothing I do seems to affect/change my body fat percentage. I am happy with my weight, it swings between 125-127 and that isn't unreasonable for my height and frame. I spent far too many decades between 180-210! No matter how hard I work, or how much I restrict (or not) my diet, I cannot get my BF% under 30%. So, I will try this, I've tried pretty much everything else reasonable, and my approach to IF will not be extreme. There is mixed research regarding IF and women, much of it appears to indicate that it isn't as effective for women as for men. Perhaps I will be one of those for whom it will be. My version of IF will simply provide different "windows" in which to eat. Same # of calories on a daily basis, or as close as I can.
So I will post my meals for today, and come back in a month or so :)
B: eggs scrambled with baby greens, coffee with cream
L: protein shake made with whole milk + a small banana
KB solo workout at home that featured ALL 6 of my kettlebells - included some volume building + technical practice
D: small chicken thigh, chicken sausage sauteed with mixed vegetables and 2 egg whites left over from making my fresh batch of mayo.
S: too many of the little dark chocolate/coconut/cacao nibs clusters - at least 5 of them. Still under my calorie targets for today though...
Oh yes, I made the mistake of making THIS recipe today for chocolate/coconut balls. (http://www.ohladycakes.com/2014/05/dark-chocolate-coconut-clusters-with-cacao-nibs.html) Fab! DON'T MAKE THEM IF YOU ARE HOME ALONE   You don't THINK the small recipe will make that much, but that couldn't be further from the truth. No added sugar though, so most of the calories are coming from the unsweetened coconut - which is substantial. I used 70% dark chocolate which is lighter than I would ordinarily purchase as I LOVE 85-90% dark chocolate, but since there is a good amount of cacao nibs in this recipe the chocolate shouldn't be any darker than 70%.

Snack: small carton of chocolate milk (today was a huge street festival over 10,000 people..and there was a promo milkomobile van..), later a fresh soft pretzel and coffee with milk.
Snack: yogurt with pineapple at home, tea with skim milk
Dinner: black squid ink pasta stir fried with asparagus, red pepper, onion, garlic ...I couldn't taste squid taste...which meant I overpaid for the dry pasta from an Italian supermarket. :( A slice of fresh cantaloupe. Tea with milk.

I won't even try to describe what I ate over my weekend in NYC. We walked for miles and did a 7 mile bike tour, but I still gained 3 pounds. One pound is already gone.
yesterday:
B: egg whites, spinach, salsa, an orange, coffee
L: tuna, walnuts, cranberries in 2 butter lettuce leaves, an apple
2.3 mile hill walk
S: a couple of pita chips and hummus, Machengo cheese
D: one chicken thigh with mango salsa, quinoa, roasted Brussel sprouts. glass of white wine. small scoop of ice cream

half a banana before a 13.5 mile ride at 5:15 AM. This ride included the 2 biggest hills in town (the other one, besides my street is not as steep, but at 5:30 AM, still felt pretty bad!).
B: A breakfast Korean rice bowl, made with 2 eggs, quinoa, 1/4 avocado, lox, kale, and chili sauce. blueberries and strawberries, coffee
L: chicken salad with walnuts/cranberries in 2 butter lettuce leaves, an apple
S: slice of spelt raisin bread and almond butter, decaf
D: left over veggie curry and quinoa, 2 squares dark chocolate

Crankin, I like your the sounds of your 'rice' bowl, thanks for the idea!
Also, if you are out climbing steep big hills at 5:30 am, well, you rock!

I think I saw the idea for the rice bowl in Cooking Light. I realized I almost always have all of those ingredients on hand. I actually like it better when I sub spinach for the kale. I like kale in soups, omelettes, etc., but I don't like the texture so much by itself.

It's a good mix, and I will eat quinoa. I agree that kale does better in things like soups OR ROASTED :) Ok, I love roasted veggies, period but there is just something about roasted crispy yummy Lacinto kale. Kale does have slightly higher carbs than spinach, but not much. I try to mix my greens since I eat so much of them.
I've "officially" started my month long experiment with intermittent fasting and sugar detox. Nothing extreme, just trying to get my body's attention while still having the energy to maintain my activity level.

went to a step and sculpt class. I am always wiped after this, mostly because of the heat in the room and my sweating, so I put Nuun in my bottle and it really helped. I also ate a couple of dried apricots and pecans before class
L: ate the other half of the banana when I got home (did some errands, too), then a salad with tuna in oil, left over roasted Brussel sprouts, red pepper, romaine. an apple with a little cashew butter
S: herbal tea, slice of spelt bread
D: Thai chicken soup. 2 squares dark chocolate

I realized I hadn't had steak since the end of February, when I stopped eating Paleo. I don't miss it.

Well, my IF experiment ended rather quickly. I was experimenting with limiting my meals to an 8 hour window, still maintaining the same calorie and nutritional goals. This DOES work for many, specially in dropping body fat %, but IF (intermittent fasting) does tend to work better for men than for women, though I do know some women for whom this has worked well. I immediately gained 3 pounds, FOR ME I don't think my body quite knew what to do the change and I am not about to let that trend continue nor am I going to drop my calorie targets, not with my activity level. My training volume is starting to go up as I look ahead to competing, or at least establishing my rank, in late winter.
Today:
B: usual breakfast egg/meat/veggie casserole, bit of baked sweet potato, 2 slices fresh side, coffee
~90 minute solo conditioning workout that featured Romanian deadlifts, a sled 3/4th mile, and some technique practice with the KB single arm jerk (video here if you would like to see what that is, I will NEVER be in their class but they are fun to watch ) (http://youtu.be/qC139RiFbEY) Green KB = 53 lbs, Purple KB = 40 lbs. Followed my session with protein shake
L: (coffee hour at church) a couple of meatballs, small amount of mashed 'taters and small amount of coleslaw
S: coffee with REAL cream :-)
D: Will likely be medium sized salad with veggies, a bit of roast chicken, and fermented veggies

Glad you're back to posting, Catrin. I was feeling lonely here! I guess now you know about the fasting.
B: 2 eggs scrambled with green chili, slice of spelt raisin bread, 2 turkey apple sausages, coffee
Went for a 46.7 mile ride with 2,400 ft. of climbing. I ate 2 shot blocks on the way to our lunch stop (at exactly 25 miles) and a bottle of Skratch Lab lemon lime, water.
L: chicken, mayo, tomato, lettuce on a whole wheat wrap, some baked tomato chips, bottle of water.
On the ride home, I had another bottle of Skratch Lab and half a bottle of water.
S: half a banana when I got home, later a glass of rosé, sitting on the patio!
D: burger made of brown rice, chili powder, whole wheat bread crumbs, cheddar, roasted broccoli, salad with oil and vinegar. 2 squares dark chocolate
I feel like I kind of have my nutrition under control for longer, hilly, hot rides. I stopped worrying about the temporary weight gain. My weight has gone down and stabilized since the winter, and i am still losing. If I go up a bit on the weekend, it's OK.

All of a sudden I am gaining right at .5 pound A DAY! Have been for the last week. This is driving me crazy and can't figure it out. It HAS to be fluid, but from what? I can tell a slight difference in the waistband of my pants. I HAVE been allowing more dairy into my diet, that might well be the culprit.
Yesterday:
B: brekkie casserole, coffee
Protein shake before kettlebell training session (it is at noon, hard to eat around it)
L: (mid afternoon) salad with veggies, fermented veggies, roast pork loin
D: 1 roasted chicken thigh and some steamed carrots

Today was a rest day:
B: egg/vegetable/meat casserole, coffee
L: 1 roasted chicken thigh and some steamed carrots
S: small banana
D: a bit more brekkie casserole (this time it is loaded with different veggies, as well as roasted chicken and pastured chopped pork loin). Just couldn't eat more than a couple ounces...

Catrin, I am sure the fasting is what has messed up your body's response. We need to eat. Of course, this is from a person whose family motto is "food is good, man must eat."
B: whole wheat tortilla, grilled with chicken breast and a little cheddar, salsa. sliced mango, coffee, then rode to work 5.2 miles
L: chef salad and an apple
S:a slice of spelt raisin bread and cashew butter at 3, Lara Bar at 6, before I rode home which was 5.9 miles, with a very heavy pannier!
D: I unfroze some left overs which I think are chicken thighs with a spicy tomatillo sauce. I ate 2 very small thighs, sliced jicama, the rest of the mango. 2 squares dark chocolate

Crankin it wasn't anything extreme. I just narrowed my "eating window" to 10am-7pm. Two meals rather than 3, without changing my calories. This does work for a lot of people, but apparently not me! Some have told me that I need to tough it out for a month, but I don't think so. I think my body didn't know what to do with the larger meals.
Interestingly enough, there has been some recent studies that show that 2 larger meals a day (breakfast and lunch for the study in question and same caloric intake), is an effective way to lose body fat. The summary I read of those studies didn't mention if any the participants had the same problem I did in the first week. It was worth the experiment, I won't go more extreme than that. I am too active to make large changes! I am (or was until the last few days) happy with my weight. I don't really care about the number and that is going to go up as I progress in my kettlebell sport training, my focus is to get that BF% down a few percentage points.

B: small cup of Harvest grain (mostly quinoa) cereal and almond milk, blueberries, small chicken leg, coffee
L: cup of curried zucchini soup, salad with quinoa/mushrooms, chicken, an apple
S: spelt bread/hummus
D: went out with a friend to a restaurant that has pretty healthy food. I had a salad, sautéed haddock on spinach in a balsamic reduction and a sweet potato, glass of red wine. However, I think the sauce on the fish had a lot of salt, as I woke up today up a pound or more and feeling weird.

06-05-2014, 03:49 AM
Down 1.8 pounds today :-) My coach thinks the real problem is an undiscovered food sensitivity that really got my system's attention when it received more of it than it's been accustomed to. This actually makes sense, and may explain my inability to drop my BF% regardless of my efforts and work. I DID increase my egg intake last week and I do consume a lot of them. Dairy was up a bit, but not much. I've factored out everything else, I get enough sleep, stress is much better than it once was, I am fueling my activities appropriately. It may be worth my while to conduct a 21-30 day egg elimination test - as much as I REALLY don't want to do that (I love eggs). This isn't the first time I've wondered about this, it might be time to finally check it out.
Yesterday:
B: Brekkie casserole, coffee with cream
Intense kettlebell solo session, focusing on volume building. 30 minutes of pure over-head work not counting rests AND my shoulders are quite happy :-) Followed by protein shake (the one I use post-intense-workout)
L: Meeting schedule precluded lunch, had a Quest bar (the only commercial bar I will eat), and later in the day had a Tera's Whey shake (much simpler shake then the post-workout version)
D: Roasted Kale, Butter lettuce-leaf roast loin 'wrap'
Didn't quite meet my calorie goals, but not too far from it. I need to hit the store for veggies tonight!

Weight is the same today as yesterday - and I will TAKE IT! My digestive system is still recovering but all feels much better. If it IS a food sensitivity it is either dairy or eggs, and I need to figure that out. First, however I need to figure out what to have for brekkie and still get what I need out of it, but I will figure that out. Certainly I can have chicken, sausage, whatever, the thing is, I LOVE having eggs for breakfast! Thankfully I've got to finish what is in the fridge first :-)
Yesterday:
B: usual breakfast casserole, coffee
S: Cappuccino (double)
L: roasted chicken thigh, sweet potato
S: Protein shake (testing a new brand to see if it is palatable)
D: Roasted chicken, swiss chard, steamed carrots, small banana
Today:
Breakfast: more brekkie casserole, coffee
Early morning KB volume-building workout (at home)
Followed workout with left-over steamed carrots
L: Chipotle salad with chicken, fajita veggies and salsa (the only fast food place I will consider - didn't have any food to take for lunch)
S: small banana planned
D: I need to go shopping first, thinking about a couple of Trader Joe's yummy chicken sausages along with some roasted Kale, sauteed Swiss Chard and last of the steamed carrots. I've a LOT of both Kale and Chard in the fridge...

L: I ate really late, at 2. Had some home made chicken salad/walnuts/cranberries and the rest of the curried zucchini soup, and an apple
D: I thought I wouldn't be hungry, but at 7 I had some egg whites, green chili salsa, and cheddar with an orange.

The play is called "Smart People." It's written by a well known African American playwright from Boston, who had another hit play that actually went to Broadway a couple of years ago. It's about racism in the context of a group of very smart, Harvard affiliated people of different races. It was really good. We've been doing this theatre subscription for about 8-9 years and it's getting better every year.
B: tuna, sliced tomatoes, melted cheddar
S: had a slice of spelt bread and almond butter at 11:00, as I was starting my ride at 11:30.
L: Had what essentially amounted to a pile of lettuce, with some chicken at lunch on my ride. It was supposed to be a salad.
D: had a tuna tartare appetizer, which was awesome, but salty. Had scallops for my dinner. 3 huge scallops in a chili infused broth, with all kinds of veggies. Glass of rosé.
Crankin
06-08-2014, 04:30 AM
B: 2 buttermilk waffles, walnuts, dried cranberries, 2 turkey sausages, strawberries, 2 cups green tea, half a cup of coffee.
S: so, our ride we were leading started at 12:00. We had the above big breakfast at 8:00. At 11:30. I ate one slice of bread with cashew butter. I just couldn't eat a full lunch before a 30 mile ride.
During the ride, I ate a Lara Bar and drank a bottle of Skratch lemon lime and some water. This strategy worked, except for the last 5 miles, my stomach was rumbling and I should have had a Shot Block when we stopped with 8 miles left. I was sweeping and the 3-4 people that i was with got pretty slow near the end, so I just kept drinking. It was hot, but I did OK, despite the fast pace (for me) of this ride. Had some whole wheat pita chips and hummus when we got home.
D: after a shower and changing, we went back to Verrill farm for a catered dinner. I had 2 glasses of red wine, and a couple of appetizers. I sampled some pulled pork with no bun, one piece of bbq chicken, cole slaw, and some eggplant parmesan. Then we went out for ice cream, where I had a kiddie sized cup of chocolate chocolate cookie dough.
I felt like i needed all of this food and amazingly, my weight is still in the 107 range this morning. I was down to 105.6 at one point this week, which is my lowest in over a year.

Back up 2 pounds today - sigh - but I know what it is from. I ate a few things yesterday that is guareenteed to cause bloating and temporary weight gain. I KNEW better...back to normal today. I volunteered at a women's mountain bike clinic yesterday - it was a lot of fun!
B: usual baked casserole brekkie
Ran/walked 4.4 miles on a mountain bike trail (I consider it my first unofficial trail 5K)
S: Quest bar
L: 6 small pasta noodles (first grains in 2 years, and the last!), way too many yummy meatballs, marinara sauce. They also had huge trays of double chocolate brownies and I succumbed. More than once or twice :o It is only at events like this when I am even tempted to eat things I know I shouldn't. Oh well, such is life. I was STARVING after my run, even with the Quest bar, and that made my susceptible to brownies!
D: sauteed chicken over raw spinach, cucumbers (also at event, unsure what the chicken was sauteed with but it was good)

B: Last of the brekkie casserole, tomorrow morning starts my non-egg experiment! Coffee
S: Quest bar - didn't have lunch until 2:00
L: small amount of roasted chicken thigh, Trader Joe's Broccoli slap, a boiled egg (last of THOSE), fermented veggies and a bit of home-made garlic mayo for dressing
D: Smoked Alaskan Salmon wrapped around bits of avocado, small amount of roasted butternut squash and also some roasted eggplant/zucchini

B: Grass-fed ground beef and mushrooms over a a heap-o-wilted-baby-spinach. The first of my eggless brekkies. Coffee with cream.
Early lunch (due to training schedule): One Trader Joes garlic chicken sausage, smallish baked sweet potato
Kettlebell training class - my coach had me working on my own to test my endurance with two sport lifts. 24 solid minutes of lifting with two 2 minute rest breaks. My endurance is coming along & my shoulders & neck were/are quite happy! The weight was light, of course, and I followed with a protein shake
S: another Trader Joe's chicken sausage (went home early to supervise some kitchen work in my apt and I was starving - so much that I ate it cold)
D: roasted chicken thigh over butternut squash and fermented veggies

S: Pita chips, hummus
D: Homemade spinach+ricotta-stuffed ravioli w/ tomato sauce, salad (various lettuces, radishes, chipotle ranch dressing), glass of white wine; slice of cherry pie

Yesterday was a bit odd, it turned out to be sort of a rest day but not...lower intensity day I suppose
B: grass-fed ground beef cooked with mushrooms over a large bed of sauteed spinach, coffee with cream, 1 slice nitrate-free bacon
Early lunch: 1 link of Trader Joe's garlic chicken sausage, roasted carrots and roasted broccoli, 6 ounces gourmet ice cream
KB training - which turned out to be mainly stretching with some (way too light) strength work. Probably making us rest a bit after the serious butt-kicking on Monday. While I like to think I am 20 years old, my joints and ligaments are all 54 and do require a bit more recovery time. Protein shake afterwards to try and get my calories up to where they should be.
S: Another protein shake (a different one), really having problems getting anywhere near my calorie targets - even WITH the nice cream at lunch!
Before dinner, since I really didn't feel like I had worked out, I played with my kettlebells for 10 minutes after loosening/warming up. Quite light, but it felt good to move!
D: Roasted chicken, roasted kale, broccoli salad with fermented veggies
Since I can't totally resist ice cream, I've decided that I can have it twice a month - no more than 6 ounces and it has to be really high quality - that is the only thing that satisfies anyway. Twice a month appears to be working to keep my ice-cream-sweet-tooth at bay :-)

Since I woke up feeling even worse yesterday, no exercise. I spent my last day of the year at Hudson HS with clients in the AM, then went to the eye dr., followed by a visit to the Minute Clinic, where I strong armed the NP into giving me antibiotics, as I have been sick for 7 days and at this point, my aggressive over the counter actions are not working. She said the threshold was 10 days, but I made my case.
B: small amount of plain, non fat Greek yogurt, blueberries, walnuts, dried cranberries, a little drizzle of honey. Slice of spelt toast with almond butter.
S: an apple
L: I had just enough time to stop and get a sandwich from a local gourmet farm market, before my eye doctor appt. I could have bought plain chicken salad, but I got a chicken salad sandwich, as I was really craving it, and I know that it's better to give in, when I feel sick. I sat outside and ate.
D: grilled scallops and tomatoes/capers, with a salad. another craving, so I had a small amount of some ice cream that was in the freezer.

Yesterday was a true rest day - as tempting as it was to play with my KB herd at home. That is THE (only) disadvantage of having my own kettlebell herd! Thankfully they are far less expensive than bikes
Yesterday:
B: roasted chicken thigh, 1 slice nitrate-free bacon, spinach sauteed with pine nuts in coconut oil, coffee with cream
L: more chicken in a large spinach/butter lettuce salad with more veggies, pecans and raisins. A drizzle of EVOO for dressing. Fresh strawberries for dessert
S: Coffee and a Quest bar
D: Trader Joe's jalapeno chicken sausage, more sauteed greens, 1/2 avocado, the last slice of bacon), baked butternut squash

S: spelt raisin bread and cashew butter at 4, about 1/2 a Lara Bar before I rode home at 7:20 PM
D: since it was 7:40 when I got home, I looked in the fridge and could think about nothing but the left over lox and chive cream cheese, so I had that on a whole wheat bagel. A lot of carbs today, but I am still recovering from being sick, and I feel like I need them.

went on a fast 37.8 mile ride. It was hot, about 85 during the ride. I ate 4 Shot Blocks, one Lara Bar, drank 2 bottles of Skratch lemon-lime. I've never eaten so many Shot Blocks and my weight will show it tomorrow, but it's what keeps me feeling good on these kinds of rides.
L: I didn't go to the group lunch. Came home and ate a whole wheat tortilla cheese crisp with chicken, pineapple chunks, 2 squares dark chocolate

Had a glass of pear sangria and shared a blueberry bread pudding with chocolate sauce with DH
I'm signing off of this thread while I'm in San Diego. My brother has an extensive vegetable garden, so I am hoping to sample lots of that.

I've actually had real food (3 meals a day, even!) for the last two days. Being back on a schedule is sort of awesome. I've also been taking my bento box for lunch, because a) it fits in the communal fridge better than my other lunch box, and b) fewer individual things to wash. It's been fun trying to put together balanced lunches. (If they look pretty, it's a bonus!)
Yesterday:
B: bowl of cereal, coffee with half-and-half and sugar.
L: Leftover peanut sesame soba, leftover pulled pork (no sauce, well-drained), snow peas, some pickled bell pepper and daikon radish, fresh cucumber slices, raspberries, a banana
S: Tea with sugar and half-and-half
D: spaghetti with tomato sauce, salad, some leftover baked chicken
Today:
B: English muffin with peanut butter, coffee with half-and-half and sugar
L: Tabbouleh, 1 hard-boiled egg (I could have used two, actually, but it was perfectly cooked!), 3 mini bell peppers with hummus, a cucumber+tomato+sesame seed salad (with a little salt), a banana
S: Tea with half-and-half and sugar, buttered toast
D: Burrito with flank steak, rice, a sprinkling of cheese, and salsa.
Contemplating the last Dry Lavender soda in the fridge for "dessert." It's not chocolate, but I suppose it'll do.

So I am waiting at the airport and I thought I'd report in. I did very well eating, with 2 exceptions which were not that bad!
My brother had only healthy stuff in his house. I took him and my son and DIL out for my brother's 50th birthday on Sunday, but I had 2 cheese enchiladas, and didn't eat too much of the other. I had a sushi lunch with my son, very rare, but yesterday I ate 4 chicken taquitos for lunch . They were small, but I did not need 4!
I walked a couple of miles every morning on some big hills.

Let's not say too much about yesterday...after having lunch with my co-workers at an Indian restaurant, then I went to a cook-out at a friends house for the holiday...let's just say that I ate far too much. I actually didn't eat anything I wouldn't ordinarily, the problem was the amount. There was a small amount of ice cream involved, but no more than I would normally eat - I allow myself ice cream twice a month, so that was my holiday portion :-)
Today
Full rest day since I've a kettlebell competition tomorrow morning - it is going to be a long endurance based event and will be a blasty for sure! My goal is to finish... Part of me wants to go into my back room and "practice" with my kettlebells, but I need to be fresh in the morning. I won't improve any more before tomorrow and do not need to show up fatigued.
B: Still full from yesterday so all I had was coffee
S: Banana with a tbls of home-made almond butter
L: Roasted chicken and sauteed veggies, 2 squares dark chocolate
D: Moroccan meatballs, greens, and rutabaga/carrot mash
Resisting a beer, but I won't sleep well if I drink it - reserving it for tomorrow afternoon once the workout is behind me. It will be hard enough to get a good night's sleep tonight with all of the fireworks and related noise. It would be interesting to hear if I am the only one who has problems sleeping if I drink even one beer. If I drink it before 5 pm then it isn't so noticeable.

I went for an 18 mile ride in some of the worst humidity I've ever ridden in. Had half a Lara Bar before, bottle of water with Nuun during, and finished the Lara bar after.
L: chicken salad with walnuts, dried cranberries, mayo/plain yogurt, on butter lettuce leaves.
D: turkey burger, no bun, on tomatoes, sautéed sweet potatoes, home made broccoli slaw. going to have some chocolate chocolate chip gelato, bought to speed up DH's healing process, of course. Seriously, this is the worst 4th of July ever. All of my friends are away and the rain from the hurricane started 2 minutes after I arrived home from my ride. It's not too bad here, still raining, but not flooding like it is near the ocean.

S: Had 2 Shot Blocks and one bottle of Skratch during the ride, another slice of above bread with hummus, when I came back
D: I've been cooking way too much, even though I love to cook, since DH's accident. We got take out Chinese last night. I have Chinese food about twice a year, as compared to the past, when I had it once or twice a week. I had 3 slices of scallion pancake, and a reasonable amount of scallops with veggies and chicken with spicy Hunan sauce/veggies, brown rice.

1 hour "competition" - though not really, it is complicated :)
I did better than I had hoped, and I FINISHED the event and that is what matters, even if the last minute was UGLY - but I finished!
Followed with protein shake
L: Big salad with Moroccan meatballs, banana
D: Grass-fed burger (lettuce wrap), with tomato and fermented pickles, 1 glass red wine, 2 squares dark chocolate for dessert
Sunday
I had planned on going for a nice long brisk walk today, but my LEGS are tired after yesterday's efforts - far more than my arms :-) Rest day today, planning on some mobility and joint work tonight, along with some core/glute activation work I do every day. Considering the size of the pastured pork shoulder picnic roast I scored for a very reasonable price, it braised in the oven overnight.
B: eggs/greens scramble, fermented veggies, coffee with cream
L: kind of a mix at church coffee hour - cheese, strawberries, carrots, Paleo blueberry muffin (I brought, made with coconut & almond 'flour'), coffee
S: banana with some home-made almond butter
D: Planning on some lettuce-boat pulled pork and sauteed veggies, and will use some home-made Walnut/garlic mayo for the dressing that I still have to make. Perhaps a glass of wine, we will see how late it is.
Fireworks are STILL going off, hopefully they have to go to work early tomorrow morning and will have it out of their system by bedtime.

Thanks Crankin, I will try that out. While I am no longer avoiding eggs for breakfast I am trying to mix things up. I do need good Paleo/Primal carbs and quinoa is one of those. I tend to eat the same things all the time! I do find red quinoa to be more strongly flavored than white.

D: our friends came over for dinner. We had some artichoke dip and pita crackers, cheese, and Mojitos! I made chicken thighs with green chili salsa, salad, and my friend brought whole wheat cous cous with veggies. The chicken thighs were really tiny, we all chowed down on the cous cous. Followed this up with a bit of chocolate chip ice cream/hot fudge
My weight is up a little today, but it may be just from the hard ride, or it could be the Mojitos and ice cream! But, my weight was pretty low for me on Saturday morning and it's been much easier for me to maintain a lower weight, recover from a little more eating on weekends, since I tweaked my diet back to Mediterranean and I've been riding a lot more.

I am finding a sugar weakness right now for some reason. Having problems eating enough - which is why I am adding a protein + yogurt or cottage cheese snack to make sure things are where they should be. My body appears to be responding :-)
D: This will depend on how good I am at the reception...the reception might BE dinner :-)
