That doesn't look so bad. In fact, I'd probably add some fruit and call it good. ;) Nothing wrong with a brownie once in a while.

Never been there, but I know the food! I grew up on it, too. Sometimes you still find one around here that hasn't been renovated, that still feels like the '40s inside, with wood paneling and formica booths. Food is always terrible, but reminds me of good times with family, so I like it.
Don't weigh yourself for a few days! All that salt will affect the scale. It's only temporary. :)

Well, I started off with a pop tart. I was still hungry so I ate some Lucky Charms. I had a snack of Little Debbie Swiss Cake rolls around 10:30. That 1st pack was good but the 2nd pack was unbelievable. I had some errands to do, so I took the car and left the bike hanging. I didn't want to ride with a full stomach.
Came back and had a stir fry. The veggies sucked though so I pushed them aside and just ate the meat part. I figured, no carbs in the meat, right? I would have liked bacon with it but I'm having that in dinner tonight and didn't want to spoil it. It's about time to head to work so I'm packing some Oreos and potato chips to go with my BLT sandwich. It's the only way I can stomach the sandwich, honestly. (Kit insists I have stuff like spinach and tomatoes on it.)
I try to get down to the cafeteria during my shift for some soft serve ice cream. When they have vanilla as a choice, I grab a large root beer and make a root beer float. OMG!!! I love root beer floats. They're good for you, too. They contain milk.
Then I come home at midnight and have a big cheesy egg omelet or a grilled cheese sandwich before bed, to stave off the hunger pangs. It really works, too. Throw some bacon in either one and I sleep later in the morning. I'm not sure why it works that way, but whatever.

Haven't posted to this thread for awhile. Tomorrow I start my pre-colonoscopy (I just turned 50) "low fiber diet". I googled for ideas of what to eat, and it's pretty much the exact opposite of my current diet. White stuff, sugar, meat, all fine. Most veggies, fruits, nuts, beans, whole grains, foggetaboutit! :(
This is gonna be interesting...will be doing low fiber Wed-Sat, liquids only Sun., procedure is Monday morning.
I'll try to remember to post here as I do my low-fiber diet! :D

I had no issue with my system after the procedure. I came home and ate a ton of Indian food . It was painful to eat the low fiber diet before, though.
I drank all of that stuff and my doctor said that I still "wasn't cleaned out" that well. Who knows. My DH was so out of it when he had his, he called me from his cell phone in recovery and never remembered it. He slept for most of the rest of the day. I was wide awake during the whole thing, conversed with both the doctor and nurse, and watched the images on the monitor. I didn't feel pain, but I was awake.

Sounds intriguing. How about posting the recipe?
redrhodie
04-13-2011, 08:45 AM
They're sweet.
Here's my recipe:
4 to 4 1/2 cups flour
3/4 to 1 cup sugar (I like them sweet, so I use the full cup)
2 t salt
1 T baking powder
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup full bodied red wine
Preheat over to 350º. Mix dry ingredients. Add oil and wine and mix until well blended with a wooden spoon. Turn onto board and kneed for one minute. Shape into loops or twists. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for 40-45 minutes. You can brush with an egg white and water before baking for a glaze, if desired.
Edit, they're not good on the bike. They're too dry, and hard to swallow. Learned from experience.

I eat yogurt daily anyway, but thanks for the tip!
No Go Litely anymore. Now I just get to mix some Miralax powder with a certain type of GatorAid. Everything is OTC now. Thank heavens. I heard how metallic-tasting and awful that old stuff used to be. :( I still have to purchase all the official "prep" stuff as I start that Saturday night w/a couple spoonfuls of Milk of Magnesia, then do the liquid diet/prep on Sunday.
Went to the store and stocked up on low-fiber foods tonight...so strange to be looking for things with < 2g fiber per serving! I bought some rice pilaf, canned green bean/skinless white potato blend, little containers of applesauce, pulp-free oj, vanilla yogurt... Will also have chicken and fish, cheese, eggs. My DH made me some white bread for sandwiches (turkey and cheese). This is a big change from my usual diet of beans, kale, spinach, whole grains, whole fruits, veggie/fruit smoothies, etc!
Here was my day today - shameful:
B - Puffed wheat cereal w/spoonful of protein powder, almond milk, coffee
S - Reese's chocolate/peanut butter egg (gift from my mom, very decadent!)
30 minute run
L - turkey/cheese sandwich on white bread, small bottle of pulp-free OJ
S - 6 white rice crackers
D - Mac and cheese, 1 beer
Dessert - couple spoonfuls of vanilla yogurt, 2 thin biscuit-type cookies w/thin spread of Nutella
Nothing green all day. Ugh! :(

I hope I sleep through it and after -- if I'm going to blow a PTO (paid time off) day, I might as well get some rest. My DH was awake for his, but my step-father said he totally snoozes through his. I snooze through "conscious sedation" at the dentist so may be more likely to be out of it. Neither my DH or I has been to this particular doc, so we don't know how much anesthesia they'll give, though I have to have my DH take me there and back due to the sedation.

I think this may be only the second or third time I have done this. And the others were a combo of road and then errand rides. Today I didn't want to have to choose between friends to ride with, so I rode with Hirakikubou in the AM and my friend who is getting the road bike after lunch. It was my first ride with her this year; I was hurting by that time, as I had done a fast ride with DH yesterday after work. And on the way back to my friend's house this afternoon, we ran into about a mile of grooved pavement, which just made my body rattle everywhere.

Just one restaurant meal last night put 2 pounds on me. And Passover starts tomorrow night. Two nights of lots of food. Although I tend to loe weight over the week of eating no bread, even though matzah is definitely a simple carbohydrate.

Woohoo, all done with the colonoscopy and back to the eating! :D
(Results were fine, mild internal hemmorhoids but NO polyps; however, he did put me on the five-year return schedule based on my dad having polyps. Since none were ever cancerous and he lived to 71, I'm not sure if I'll follow the five year schedule or the ten).
So, just more juice for breakfast, but I made up for 1.5 days of no solid food with my lunch (I'm still on low fiber until tomorrow):
1 piece home-baked white toast with cheese
slice of fresh pineapple (not super low-fiber but I had to have it!)
slice of chocolate derby pie with scoop of ice cream :D
Dinner will be chicken, green beans, white rice pilaf; then back to my normal high-fiber diet tomorrow. Yay! :p

So I have a random question for you: how do steel cut oats differ in taste from, say, quaker oats? And how do you cook them? I was at the store the other day and stopped by the bulk bin section and saw steel cut oats (they look very strange). It said to cook them for 90 minutes. Egads, man- I don't have that kind of time.
How do YOU cook them?

Tri Girl, I think there's a method where you let them sit overnight? There's a thread about this somewhere.
yesterday:
egg white omelette, cheese, half a melon, coffee
nuts and cranberries
went out to lunch. had a cup of chicken soup and Cobb salad, which was not a traditional Cobb salad; it was much healthier, with broiled chicken, red pepper, lettuce, a little goat cheese, olives. But, DH decided he was done with Passover. At the end of the meal, I succumbed, too, when I ate one of his onion rings . No lightening has struck me yet.
small white mocha latte with skim milk (had to stop at the coffee place after lunch)
swordfish with a sauce of garlic, almonds, orange juice, red pepper, whole wheat orzo, salad, one piece of dark chocolate

They have a very different texture as they are less processed, and are just plain yummy :) That 90-minute thing sounds bogus, I cook mine for about 30 minutes and that works fine. I will cook 3-4 servings at the same time, this is the only oatmeal I am aware of that reheats well.
The trick is to stir them a lot to keep the oats from sticking to your pan overly much. I add the oats to boiling water, let them boil for a couple of minutes until they start to thicken, then turn down to a simmer - stirring frequently - until they are to the consistency that I like. For 4 servings this is about 25-30 minutes, if I am making less it might not take that long. At some point in the cooking process I will add frozen blueberries or chopped walnuts, both, or other things. I also like to mix a little peanut butter in it afterwards with a smidgen of milk. Yummers!
This works for me, I think there are some here that use an overnight crock-pot method but I can't seem to find it.

Today is the Eastern Orthodox Christian Pascha, and one of the years it coincides with Western Easter - this only happens about every 4 years or so. Unsure what happens in Catholic/Protestant churches for Easter, but we begin with a service that starts shortly before midnight, goes to about 3:30-4 am, then we feast. Then we go home for a few hours for a nap, and gather again in the afternoon and feast some more and enjoy the company of everyone.
So I've been feasting and enjoying the day. Lots of great food, good beer, and nary a worry about what enters my mouth. I figure that I can do this two days out of the year and this is one of them.
So, I have to say that I've been pretty much been eating everything today - Pascha is about the only time I will eat red meat, and someone made some fantastic lamb! Couldn't ride today if it wasn't damp and drizzling rain, too much food and beer - and speaking of beer, I think I hear one calling to me from the fridge :)
I don't think I will step on the scales for a few days :o

Let me know how you like them! It took me a few tries to figure out how I like them - both in consistency and what to add to them. They are wonderful before a long bike ride, or a very cold walk from the parking garage to the office on a bitter cold morning...

My DH cooks them either in a slow-cooker overnight or on the stove. I don't think it takes 90 minutes even on the stove. Try doing a search as there have been a couple threads all about oatmeal and cooking steel-cut oats here. Lots of good tips. Steel-cut are SO much better than regular rolled oats, with a great, chewy texture. I highly recommend them.
It's now officially gotten too hot for oatmeal here in NC -- upper 80s today! Cold cereal only for me from here on out!

The Easter Bunny girlfriend dropped off 3 medium sized gooey delicious home made cinnamon rolls this morning. I ate one before my 3 hour ride, and the other two for a late afternoon "snack". I also ate 2 pieces WW toast, 2 boiled eggs,2 slices of veggie bacon, a piece of leftover bean burrito,an apple, a water bottle with UCAN mix,7 low fat triscuits and a slice of low-fat cheese. I'm feeling kind of gross after the 2nd and 3rd cinnamon rolls. My recovery tights are squishing my cinnamon rolls. And we haven't had dinner yet! tokie

Ack, my weight is driving me crazy... I guess I need to ride more!
I spoke too soon - was up a lb. this morning! :( But I did overdo the eating a bit yesterday. Hopefully today's run helped a bit, but I ate enough to make up for the calories. Kicking myself b/c I ate a bag (candy-bar size) of M-n-Ms, even. I never eat stuff like that, but they were a gift left from our apartment maintenance guys (they leave them when they come in to replace filters), and I was starving this afternoon after my run.

3 slices challah french toast, blueberries/banana, one slice of low salt ham, coffee
half a Luna Bar and some nuts and cranberries during a 23 mile ride I was sweeping. Mine barely tastes, and the taste it does have is not unpleasant at all, very bland. Gets lost in the much more flavorful almond milk I use. It's a vanilla whey powder, no sweeteners. I buy it from trueprotein.com. You can make up a custom blend, add various things, whatever. I've been very happy with their service and product.

I'm not cycling much these days other than short easy rides. I have adrenal fatigue, which makes me ... you guessed it ... fatigued. I need a lot of rest and I need to eat every two or three hours. I'm trying to up my whole foods, veggies, etc.
BREAKFAST
Trader Joes Instant Apples & Cinnamon Oatmeal w/ Almond Milk
Trying to make myself switch to non-instant with no sugar, but someone has to finish the box first! Ha! I have Truvia in my oatmeal when it's not pre-sweetened. I really need to have more protein with each meal and I do find I can't last long on just oatmeal and almond milk. I am more satisfied when I have eggs, so that's my norm ... and what I had for lunch.
LUNCH
2 Eggs, sunny side up (organic)
Half an avocado (not organic, cause it's not as important since I'm not eating the skin ... pricey to do organic, so I try to do the most important stuff organic.)
3 slices of tomato (organic)
1 slice whole wheat sourdough toast (with no sugar or preservatives)
SNACK
Organic Apple with Organic Peanut Butter ... no sugar added
DINNER (haven't eaten yet, but this is what we're having)
Sauteed Chicken Strips ... yep ... organic, uncaged, etc. (was going to grill the chicken, but decided to make the kind my daughter loves, since she won't like what else we're having!)
Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Salad
SNACK
Might have a piece of toast with peanut butter. I'm really trying to avoid sugar lately, so this is sort of my dessert. I might have a mango instead if they're ripe. I'm really not supposed to have a lot of fruit right now. The sugar makes my adrenals work harder.
I'm going to a nutritionist tomorrow, so who knows what she'll do to my diet! It's a little scary.
