What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't remember, which means I've either told too many, or I don't lie! (I'll let ya'll pick!)

Most memorable moment on my bike: I just got back into riding in Aug of this year and had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. I took a 30 mile ride on my birthday and saw a Bald Eagle. He wasn't that far up and was flying in lazy circles between the bike trail and the Rio Grande. It was the first time I had ever seen a Bald Eagle outside captivity. He was awe-inspiring and one of the most majestic creatures I had ever seen. I will carry that memory with me the rest of my life.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I got lost trying to find a trailhead recently and ended up in this neighbourhood of HUGE homes that I didn't even know existed. I had a blast riding around and looking at the houses!

Most memorable moment on my bike: so many, hard to choose, one was my first true century, day 2 on the AIDS Lifecycle on the last hill towards King City, I was one of the last riders, going up the hill, rounding it and seeing the city ahead, feeling tired but knowing I'd make it and looking behind me to the mountain range and valley and seeing what we'd crossed together.

The other i would say is meeting the TE'ers for the ride up Mt. Diablo, one of the most beautiful and challenging rides and great company.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I need to learn how to attach pix here. Boy, I have alot to learn!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "I laugh in the face of death!" (I'm a wimp.)

Most memorable moment on my bike: When I first began mountain biking, I took a class where the instructor inspired me to keep trying to make it up a short, steep technical hill with a sandpit at the bottom of it. I got stuck in my pedals and went down hard three times in a row before I decided to save it for another day.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I can't pick! Every ride is an adventure, and every ride is great.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'm the family photographer so I'm rarely in pictures.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Catholic guilt keeps me from lying much. Also, I highly value integrity

Most memorable moment on my bike: I, too, am just getting back to riding outside (I've been a Spinerval addict for a couple of years---first using a spin bike and now, I'm using a trainer). In October '03, my husband and I treated ourselves to Trek 7200s and, for the first time in 20+ years, I hopped on a bike. I was pretty nervous about wiping out, so I limited my riding to occasional jaunts on a fairly deserted trail. This October, I decided to buy my Terry, which was the best purchase I've made in years. The bike was the perfect fit and consequently, I became much more confident in the saddle. What a difference the right bike can make! I'm now riding on the road---just to get to my favorite trail which is about a 1/2 mile from my house---and I'm no longer a nervous nelly on my bike. I'm no longer riding the brakes down hills :-) I've rediscovered my love of riding and get out as much as possible. Every ride makes me more confident and a better rider.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Every time I ride, I have fun. The most fun so far---powering up hills and passing lycra clad, super skinny men!!! Yes, there are benefits to having a big, muscular bum :-)

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't remember, which means I've either told too many, or I don't lie! (I'll let ya'll pick!)= hee, hee, I'll just leave that be. I'm in the same boat. :0

Most memorable moment on my bike: Just last weekend, I discovered the term "**it eating grin" :D I lowered the seat on my bike and flew down a 1000ft mtn (I know that's small potatoes for some of you) in 15 mins. I splashed through mud puddles, getting mud all over my teeth b/c I was smiling so much. What an absolute blast!!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm not a very good liar so it probably wasn't a very big one.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding up Alpe d'Huez the day before the TdF time trial last summer. The crowds had already gathered and people were cheering you on (allez! allez!). It was quite an experience.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I think it was the downhill I mentioned above. When I got to the bottom, I was wishing for a ski lift to take me to the top (didn't want to suffer through the climb again) so I could do it another time. Now that I think about it, maybe I wouldn't have slowed down if I realized how fast I was going :D

Most fun ever had on a bike? I'd only had my bike for 3 months but went on a weekend camping trip to see the Tour with some clubmates. I was totally out of my depth as I'd only just started riding and on one flat section I became part of a train. Gary was pushing Tris, who was pushing me. We were doing about 25 mph-fasted I'd been on a bike at that point. It was such a laugh!

Explanation of your avatar: I'm lazy and I haven't gotten around to finding/creating one yet

Age (general or specific): Late 40's.

Occupation: Indexer, Medical Secretary

Favorite bike: The one I'm on at the moment. (I can be fickle)

What's in your stable? Walter, the 1978 Raleigh 10-speed (he needs some repair work, poor baby)
William, the new Sun EZ Sport recumbent.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 34 or so coming down a nice hill by Nebraska City on Walter. We were coming home from a 2-day mini tour and I had full panniers on at the time. I probably should have been scared, as the cross wind was giving the ride some zest, but I have a pretty high guts/brains ratio.
I have hopes of finding a faster hill with William some day soon.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Some recent ones are at:
http://lincolndietrichs.org/mopac1.html

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: That's classified.

Most memorable moment on my bike:
Is this a test?
OK, either it was the moment I realized that I could go 'most anywhere on a bike, so maybe I should.
OR it was the time I decided to combine bicycling and walking my doberman. (That guts/brains ratio, again. It worked for us, but don't try it yourself) After that we went many happy/exploratory miles together.
OR my Dad giving me freedom by showing my snotty pre-teen self how to fix a flat - the job needed a wrench or two back then.
OR the time DH & I were riding along talking, and I got a mouthful of used spider web. DH says he's never heard me make THAT combination of sounds before or since.
OR my wobbly first ride home on William. I really wanted to ride him home from the bike shop, so I did.
So many choices...

Most fun ever had on a bike?
Muliple choice again...
That glorious summer that my friends & I spent going to summer school & taking the long way home (from driver's ed.).
OR a certain fall ride just as the foiliage was at its explosive finest.
OR the afore-mentioned mini-tour with DH.
OR the ride I'm on at the moment (I said I could be fickle.) Actually I'm not riding at all for a while, not while there is a layer of ice on everything.

Real name: Anna

Where do you live? New Zealand, although I'm off to the UK on a working holiday soon.

Explanation of your handle: Well, the kiwi part should make sense now that you know I'm from NZ. The tl stems, in a round about way, from an old nickname.

Explanation of your avatar: When I've posted enough to be able to choose my own avatar, I have a nice silver fern to put up. Or I might choose something different...

Age: 25

Occupation: Primary teacher (that's elementary school, for those of you that don't speak any language other than American).

Favorite bike: I'm only just getting into this whole biking other than just to get from A to B thing, so I really haven't ridden enough bikes to have formed an opinion.

What's in your stable? 2004 Mongoose Rockadile AL. An entry level bike, but it does what I need and I got a good deal.

Fastest speed on a road bike? Where? When? So far, I'm much more into biking where getting dirty is kinda the point...

Another picture of yourself or your ride? No pics of me, but you can see my bike here (http://www.bicycleshop.com.au/rockal.htm), although mine is smaller than that one; I'm only 160cm tall (5'3").

What is the biggest lie you've ever told? Do I have to pick just one? ;) Nah - I don't really go for flat out lying, but I'm a pro when it comes to leaving out parts of the truth I'd rather other folks didn't know.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, that very first time I rode without training wheels was pretty darned kewl...

Most fun ever had on a bike: Dunno that I have one particular moment, but I always really enjoy the small triumphs. You know, getting to the top of Hell Hill without having to dismount, not geting stranded in The Sandpit of Doom, forgetting which exact roots actually were The Treeroots of Death the first several times I went over them.

What's in your stable? I’m embarrassed but . . . Tandem: Lippy, Dirt: Titus, Litespeed and Marin; Town: Bob Jackson and Kelly; Road: Mercian and Litespeed (We’re DINKs and all vacations are spent fishing or biking, what can I say?)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 48 on a single going down Howell Mountain into the Napa Valley. 60-god-knows-what on the tandem going down some hill into Napa, hit a steel-decked bridge and learned to fly. Thank goodness our balance is good on the thing and Bubba is an excellent captain.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? This is the last mtb trip we took in southern Utah. Some of them are a bit repetitive but we had a lot of thunderstorms which means you focus on riding and not picture taking. Proud to say that all the boys wanted my “Ride Like a Girl” socks at the end. See if you can guess which one is me. :)

Most memorable moment on my bike: Wow, it's really hard to choose. But I think the most memorable moments for me were the doors that opened to me on my cross-country trip because I was traveling alone on my bike. I met all sorts of people on the road - my loaded bike was an introduction, and between the bike and my own smiles and willingness to talk with perfect strangers, it was a wonderful time! And not only were people there to talk to, they were also there to offer advice, invite me to pitch my tent in their yard, and - well, you get the picture... (If that whets your curiosity, you can read more about my cross-country trip (http://denise2002xc.crazyguyonabike.com).)

Luckily it was banked well and I had room to maneuver because I negociated that bend at about 30 mph ! Darned if I know how I managed to keep control, it was such a rush when I realized I was going to survive, but I don’t plan to relive that experience anytime soon!

... for a brief public service announcement.

If you don't have a website to upload images, you could try http://tinypic.com/

It hosts your image and gives it a URL. And it's free.

Then you can post the image on this site by inserting the url between the "insert image" codes, which looks something like this:

{IMG}xxx{/IMG}

but instead of the {}'s you use []'s
(if I used square brackets in the example above you wouldn't see the end result in my post!) and where the xxx is the complete url (including the http:// ) for your image. Hope that all makes sense.

I'm really enjoying this thread, thanks for starting it, Kathie !
OK, who's next?

I'm the grinning rider in front as we were headed over the GG bridge and up to UCSF campus to finish that afternoon. Lovely estate wines there by the way!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "oh, I'm sure you're OK; don't worry, you'll be fine" (told to a riding buddy while she was shivering, w/blue lips - hypothermic on Flesher Pass in freezing, sleeting Montana weather; trying to warm her with our bodies while waiting for sag vehicle to arrive). The doc kept her off the road and on IV for 2 days, then she really was fine again.

Most memorable moment on my bike: oh, too many to list; I've been very, very lucky to have enjoyed some amazing cycling adventures.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Whereever my last ride was and looking forward to the next one; in other words, it's a blast most every time!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't stand to lie, I feel weird. I couldn't tell you when the last time it was.

Most memorable moment on my bike: I love this story cause most of my bike riding life I have always rode with boys. One day I went riding with an ex and his friend. Come to find out his friend was a pro-snow boarder and I kicked his butt all over the place. He was very interested in me after that.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I think for me thats everyday!!! I just love to ride.

Another picture of yourself or your ride?

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't remember, which means I've either told too many, or I don't lie! (I'll let ya'll pick!)

Most memorable moment on my bike:
That's a hard one, since I avg several kmi a year and do quite a few events. There is no thrill like the first XC race. The first XC race after a season off was almost on par. Racing is just a part of me, I feel wierd without it.

Most fun ever had on a bike?
If not in a race, it would be anytime I am exploring. I love the long summer evenings when after dinner rides can be long and relaxing. The kind of rides when I come home and have dinner and keep going on and on because I need to find the way home! The best ones last until midnight or so, and involve periodical stops with local stores or gas stations for refuels. Mini journeys, to forget normal and just ride. Where mileage is not a concern because it will be near 35-40 miles just getting back home. Those are fun.

Real name: Michala

Where do you live? Manhattan, NY

Explanation of your handle: I heard somewhere that missionaries in Africa (sometime ago) had the first bicycle in a certain area, and the locals didn't know what it was but called it the horse with round legs. I liked the idea of bike=horse as a mode of transport, but that name was too long. Then I found an Iron Horse mountain bike to fit me, and viola - IronHorse. 213 is the number of the house I grew up in. We always read it as 2, 13 not two hundred thirteen.

Explanation of your avatar: n/a

Age (general or specific) 47 going on 12!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't have very many pixs of myself - I hate having my pix taken

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Ah, that I feel fine the day after my first workout of the year!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Anytime I'm just sailing along with out distraction!

Most fun ever had on a bike? the first time I sailed through the "rough spots" of my usual ride!

Real name: Casey
Where do you live? San Leandro, CA

Explanation of your handle: My boyfriend and I were dreaming of a tandem right before I signed up for the forum. I was to be the Admiral (or the stoker) and I was going to sing to him to get him through the long rides we would take. Therefore: Admiral Finch. Plus, I just like thinking of myself with a long beard and a stuffy captain's uniform. ha ha.

Explanation of your avatar: I still don't understand how to put one on.

Age (general or specific) 25. 26 in march. ooooh yah.

Occupation: lead auditor, but I'm a writer. a poet, actually. i just have to work for money.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 45. out on a ride alone near lake chabot. must have been in... july last year.. i had my computer set on something other than speed and when i got home I checked the settings and BAM! There it was. I had never gone above 30 before that day.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't understand this question. I'm 5'3, blonde, and I ride a red bike... if I knew how to post pics, I would, but I don't cause I'm dorky.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: That I made 45mph. ha ha. no. not really. I can't remember right now. which should tell you something...

Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding for the first time at night and being completely alone on a trail, without lights around me, and feeling like I was flying.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Oh man. I don't know. Everytime I'm on I feel great and I have a blast. It's those endorphins. They make every thing great. The Breast Cancer Fund's Ride for the Cure was awesome. It was pretty fun. Cinderella this year is going to be a blast.

Where do you live?
Hillsboro, Oregon

Explanation of your handle:
My X and I had an old Harley and some time around the time I knew I was leaving him he gave me permission to buy a bike (he meant a new Harley so he could ride it too) so I bought a custom built road bike much to his surprise! I was also riding with a group of guys training to do the Aids ride and they thought it was so funny that I bought a bicycle instead of a Harley they called me a real bikerchic. The name stuck.

Explanation of your avatar:

Occupation:

Favorite bike:

Fastest speed on a road bike?
Fourty-freakin'-two! Yeah it was downhill......sigh.

Another picture of yourself or your ride?
I have lots but no web host to put one up right now.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told:
I didn't do it!

Most memorable moment on my bike:
Pace lining with two guys on the Palm Springs 50 miler, it was freakin awesome and I never felt so alive as I did then. Have you ever felt like one with your bike, when every thing just clicks and you are suspended in time? Well that was a time like that for me. It was so sureal something I'll never forget.

Most fun ever had on a bike?
*wiping tears from my eyes* Rides with my sister. She lives over a thousand miles away from me now. She and I started our road riding together training for El Tour de Tucson 50 miler in 1998. We were hooked early on and had so many wonderful "training" rides together. We did some pretty goofy things, the kind of things only sisters share. What fun we had and I miss her dearly. Oh and I miss riding with her too.

BikeMomma
01-24-2005, 02:30 AM
Real name: Kim

Where do you live? Atwater, California

Explanation of your handle: I'm injecting cycling (i.e. my feel-good drug) back into my life after about 10-12 years of being out of it to get married (to a non-cyclist), create a home, have three kids (one of which WILL be a cyclist, so help me!), and go to night school to advance my career and self. All the while, I have identified myself by my parenthood and marital status, I realize now totally ignoring what really makes me tick - getting out on my bike and enjoying the health and euphoria that comes with it. That's the "bike" part. The "momma" half is the newer part of me that also makes me tick these days, and is what I answer to around the house.

Explanation of your avatar: an avatar... you mean I can have an avatar??? hehe Nope, not yet...not enough posts - still a newbie.

Age: 34
(before the injection of cycling bit mentioned above, I was probably more like croaking age, whatever that may be)

Occupation: City government, Land-use planning for a future college town....here come the cars. But there's hope...bike lanes are planned on most streets....

Favorite bike: any fast machine with a lovely paint job, shiny spokes, and that purring sound I love so much on the road..... Kestrel comes to mind. Saw one from across the grass at the Sea Otter Classic Expo and fell in love.... dropped everything! -- handed my daughter off to my hubby, said "I'll be over there" and I was, just like that. I haven't drooled like that since I was a wee-tiny baby in diapers. Oh my!

What's in your stable? A still-pretty (but dirty!), still purring Cannondale with a new Terry Butterfly saddle (love it! credit to the "Terry" threads for recommending!), but that is sadly showing it's age (I got it 17 years ago!). Keeping my eyes pealed for anything that fits the pocketbook, but that Kestrel is looking mighty yummy. Oh, and recently was given an older Bianchi that needs some tlc - not rideable at the moment, but couldn't beat the price.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Oh my, it's been a while and how I DO miss the speed! I think probably about 45/50 mph is what I experienced before, while going downhill in the old mining town of Hornitos (near Mariposa, CA) and up a little bit past there. There is a certain downhill, though, before you get into Hornitos that I used to gun for at the top of the hill. I'd be positively sprinting all out at the top, and I'd carry that speed over the crest and down the other side. I'd do 45 around the next corner if I had the wind to my back. Soooo much fun.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? None at the moment...I'll work on that.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: how does that one go?? ummm, oh yea -- "I can't remember, which means I've either told too many, or I don't lie! (I'll let ya'll pick!)"

Most memorable moment on my bike: Every wednesday, I'd do the ride to Hornitos, about 65 miles from Merced, CA. I'd do another 10 mi loop - the long way home - if I didn't feel like going home yet (and it wasn't too hot). Those moments, all of them on those rides, were memorable. Especially in the spring, the landscape was gorgeously green, with wildflowers everywhere, and a view of the snow-capped Sierra range (aka Yosemite Nat'l Park locale) in the distance. Another memorable moment was beating a particular rider (a guy who was just SURE he'd always be faster than me) in a sprint on our tuesday sprint interval ride. Oh, life was sweet that day!

Most fun ever had on a bike? I agree with most here - every day, every ride is a joy, even when it hurts. But I had the most fun, I think, when I was able to keep up with the guys, the racers, every time I went out with them and finish a ride with the pack. One particular day, on a training race with another club in another city, I was riding in the middle of the pack, being sucked along by the draft, on a sweet, smooth road with the wind favorable, I looked down at my computer and we were going 35/36 easy. I was barely peddling, the wheels were humming all around me, the company was good, my legs were strong - oh, to go back in time! THAT was exhilaratingly fun. How I love this sport! Why did I ever wait so long to get back into this??

Most memorable moment on my bike: Passing my husband at the top of the climb at the Merrit race last year, and staying ahead of him on the oh-so-amazing-flowing downhill, then pulling away from him on the climb out. Wahoo!!!!!!! The perfect ride! (There's even a picture to prove it...somewhere)

Most fun ever had on a bike? The first time I lead the Wednesday night ride. Those guys are FAST and the singletrack is tough, and I still lead 2/3 of the climbing! But there's so many other times when I've been one with the bike. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Zen.

Explanation of your avatar: A doctored-up version of my bike

Age (general or specific): 40

Occupation: Officially a part-time graphic designer. In reality, a graphics production person.

Favorite bike: That I own--my Juliana

What's in your stable? My FS mountain bike: Santa Cruz Juliana, hardtail: Specialized Rockhopper, a very old Sekai Ladysport road bike that someone gave me (I call her The Poodle 'cause she's pink), and if the LBS can tweak the fit tomorrow (cross your fingers) a 2003 model Trek 2000 road bike

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? The Poodle's brakes scare the pants off me, so I'm sure it's not very fast. That's one reason I want to buy a new road bike.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Attached: Mount Saint Helens last summer

Most memorable moment on my bike: Lots of things pop into mind. Many of them the first time I cleaned a certain obstacle. There was one time I fell, no, more like flew off the side of my bike after washing out in some gravel on a downhill. Smacked both knees so hard it brought tears. I rolled over to gather myself as several people stood over me, and I suddenly started to feel a wet trickle at my side. We all got a laugh out of that when I figured out it wasn't blood but the water pressing out of my hydration pack.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Anytime I get to experience "the zone" when everything is clicking and I'm focused on nothing but the moment. It doesn't happen very often, but it's sweet when it does.

hello naama, not to go too far OT but i was wondering where are all the "nice jewish girls". My late father was raised in Jerusalem from about the age of 3 till he was about 14, the family stopped there on the way from Russia to New York where my grandfather was a cantor at one of the major temples in NYC. Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? couldn't say how fast because we went to Vegas and road Red Rock Canyon. We decided to rent the bikes instead of shipping them for just one ride. Needless to say I did not have a computer, but I know going down some of those hills was pretty fast, sorry, but I wimped out and even used my breaks. This trip was just last month, January.

Road: custom Willits titanium. Mtn.: custom Willits steel in HOT PINK (I call the shade candy raspberry).

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I just got a computer and have seen 40 mph on some forgotten section of a long ride around here. I know I've gone faster than that on the back of the tandem and solo in the mountains, just don't have the digital proof.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't have a digital camera. Need to remedy that.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Anytime I do something I didn't think I could.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I was in my second season of riding single track when I accepted an invitation to go on a 9-day mtb tour from SW Colorado to Moab. The whole tour was great...well, maybe except the first day which started with a long, cobbly climb during which I sat down and wept and which I finished last. Mid-way through the tour we had a half day's riding that was suitable for scorchers, wide and swoopy and we wingnuts had to pass the others on uphills just to make it to the top and my friend Geo giving me a little boost now and then at the crest of a hill, and I ran my front wheel right into a mud hole and supermanned over the bars and came up laughing and MAN was it great!!!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Another?? How about one? http://www.teamamericasdairyland.com/Club/stories/cindy.htm

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Define 'big' ....

Most memorable moment on my bike: If I have to choose just one I think it would be the very first charity ride Al & I participated in. We were contemplating the purchase of road bikes (I was the one on the fence thinking that I didn't really 'need' a road bike). As we were nearing the last five miles of a 32-mile route Al & I were humming along on our comfort bikes enjoying the gorgeous late summer weather. As we whizzed by a group of women on road and hybrid bikes, I overheard one of them say, "We've just been passed by two comfort bikes." It was at that moment I decided Al was right ... I COULD be a roadie!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Just about any time I am on my bike and the endorphins have kicked in is my favorite and/or fun moment. Two moments come to mind; the first at a biking event when Al & I maintained 27 mph for over 10 miles. The second came on another charity ride in northern Wisconsin in late September; the temperature at the start was 32 degrees but it was a beautiful route with Bald Eagles sitting in the towering pines next to the lakes, the aspen trees in brilliant gold foliage, geese gathering for migration, all viewed while we were clipping along at 17 mph.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I hate liars, so generally, I tell the truth.

Most memorable moment on my bike: When I climbed Mt. Calvo in Tuscany, all because my husband and I misread a road sign to get back to Siena. The guy from the bike shop where we rented the bikes didn't believe that we had done the ride...it's part of the Giro. I have a nice video of me telling my husband I hate him at the summit.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I would have to say that the most fun I have on my bike is when i commute to school. I love to see the looks of envy from the teachers who are 25 years younger than me. It's a really short commute, but mostly uphill. Plus, I get to tell the 12 year old boys to keep their hands off of my bike, when it's in my classroom!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Nope, I'm camera shy.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: When I was a technical support engineer, I told a customer that my mom wrote the software manual that he had been berating for 5 minutes straight. That got him to be quiet, and I eventually 'fessed up that my mom didn't really write the manual. :D

What's in your stable? At the moment, the Santa Cruz Heckler, and a half built up and repainted Giant ATX890 frame. I am also in the process of selling my Avanti Sprint roadie because I bought it and it was too big for me.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Considering the road bike never made it off the windtrainer, I don't think I was going very fast at all :o

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Oooh. I'll see if I can attach some piccys below. One of my Heckler, and another of me riding my bike around the blue lake at St. Bathan's here in NZ.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: (Probably not the biggest lie, but one I am willing to share!..) An ex-boyfriend once asked me "Is this a rebound relationship?" when I started dating him 5 days after my previous boyfriend broke up with me. And I answered "no, of course not". And he believed me. Boys are strange.

Most memorable moment on my bike: When I was coming down the hill with no brakes on my flatmate's bike in the dark with no lights on (naughty girl!), and came around the corner, met a car coming round the other way with its headlights on, decided to move over a little bit more to the side of the road to give the car more room in case it didn't see me.. and ended up head over heels in the ditch in the side of the road. Luckily, the car stopped and the driver of the car took me to hospital, where I proceeded to wait for 2 hours before someone could see me. I was lucky though - only came out with a fat lip, a lot of grazes and a slight concussion.

Most fun ever had on a bike? When I finally learnt how to bunnyhop and master clipless pedals. :o Sad I know.

Explanation of your handle: lack of creativity

Explanation of your avatar: avatar??....you mean I could have an avatar??

Age (general or specific) 45 in the summer of 2005

Occupation: Mom, wife, home schooler, special education volunteer advocate

Favorite bike: Don't know enough yet to have one. For now, it would be one with 2 good wheels, a comfy saddle, and working gears.

What's in your stable? an old, old old, Bianchi mountain bike, and a spanking new Fugi something or another.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Aboutn 28 mph with the breaks on slightly, going down a hill here in Austin. I don't care for too much speed going down hills...the idea of a wreck is most unappealing! My adrenaline loving husband calls me a weeny. SO be it.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? None yet.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Hmmm - not sure I want to confess!

Most memorable moment on my bike: On my first long ride at about mile 18 I had one foot unclipped while standing in a turn lane on a busy road during a red light. I was waiting to turn left. As I stood there I just began to loose my balance and began falling on my clipped in side. I couldn't unclip and began to fall into on coming traffic. As I looked up about half way through my fall, I could see a city bus coming towards me. At this time my husband is frantically trying to grab me, but he too has one foot clipped in ( the one closest to me) and he can't quite get me. I fall, tangled in my bike, left foot still clipped in, and can see that as long as the bus stays it's course it will miss my head by about 18 ". I am calm. My husband is freaking out as he can't see this. The bus passes, I am fine, my husband picks me up. We cross the street. We stop. My husband leans over and punches me in the arm! "Don't you EVER do that to me again!" he yells with such a look of fear on his face. Hours later he still wasn't OK. Guess I better practice clipping in and out!

Most fun ever had on a bike? I just love getting out on the road - the wind and the sun....I feel such freedom. SOOOOOO much better than running.

Hi Nuthatch

Just about to brave the clipless thing too... everyone keeps telling me how bruised I'm gonna get, but I've stocked up on Arnica! Most embarrassing this is, got my pedals but completely failed on fitting them myself, hate being defeated and having to ask someone with a bit more muscle to help!

Welcome, Tigger! Are you talking about taking old pedals off and putting the new ones on in regards to muscle? You should have seen me cursing the wrench, the bike, the pedals as I tried to power the pedal nut one direction and the pedals spun the other direction. I'm sure wiser heads would have said, well why didn't you just lay the bike down on it's side to get better leverage? but I was too lazy to take it off the trainer and too stubborn to ask for help. I'm going to have to take a training course in maintenance and repair!

Tigger
03-03-2005, 01:58 PM
Sounds like me - yep getting the old pedals off proved beyond me, I hate having to ask for help... maintenance is definitely not my strong point, but I feel doubly embarrassed asking my boyfriend to help, especially as a) he expected I would need his help and offered to fit them for me b) I said oh I'm sure I can manage! Too much pride I guess... :)

psychavoc
03-03-2005, 03:22 PM
My boyfriend spent a few years as a bike mechanic, and he doesn't let me work on my bike too much. The last time I tried, I rounded out one of the disc mount holes on my brand new set of suspension forks. Ooops :o

Oh. And for taking off pedals - for more leverage, try putting a larger pipe (e.g., set of old handlebars, long thin strong pipe) over the handle of the wrench or pedal spanner, and then swinging off that. :)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I don't have a cyclocomputer, I would imagine being new. not so fast ...25 mph is what my husband says

Another picture of yourself or your ride? more pics of me at: http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/forum/member.php?u=698

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: ummmm...well, um I was a teenager and not alway doing what one should and covering up for oneself is common when you don't want to get caught. Nothing drastic, but I did the "don't call me, because I told my mom I was with you" story.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Younger years:
As a kid I used to ride my 10speed for long rides and fantasized about riding with a team as an adult.
Here I am as an adult training, getting ready for that future team. Don't have many stories yet, still new to cycling and clipless. I did a loop yesterday 3rd day of having bike (15miles) on my own, much of which was on a busy road. I was scared at first, but had to do it... It felt so good to accomplish it. I called my husband at work as soon as I got to the house!

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I think I hit 42mph one day flying down a hill on Hwy 1...scared the stuffin' out of me and so I decided I just wasn't made for those kinds of speeds

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I 'm a lousy liar

Most memorable moment on my bike: My very first biking tour in Provence. It was about 80 degrees, gorgeous sun. I rode around a corner and there in front of me was an enormous field of sunflowers and in the distance was Mt. Ventoux. Simply gorgeous.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Pedalling through little villages in France, stopping for a coffee and chatting with the locals. It just doesn't get any better than that.

So proud and focused on my new baby.
I really was not thinking when I read....
Whats in your stable? Total of 8 bikes actually, we have our own lil bike shop goin'. Front entry sometimes looks like one. We don't have a garage so they are in the house.
My new baby Bianchi, plus I also own a MTB, Ideal DS Full suspension. The kids also have MTB Ideal FS bikes.
My husband got a new road bike (last tax returns), Bianchi ML3, and three Cannondales, one road-Profile, and the other two are MTB. Craziness.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Devils Punchbowl - To the Devil's Chair - 2001 - Alone, couldn't believe I made it especially after taking a spill about halfway there. When I got there, I took a long break. Breathed in the fresh air and the natural beauty all around. For the most part, it was quiet -no rumbling of the city - then I heard the sound of an eagle crowing and looked to find it soaring into the Devils' chair and back up again then down and up again as if it was dancing in the air for an audience.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Is this a family sight?

Real name: LisaKaren
Where do you live? Beaverton, Oregon

Explanation of your handle: LisaKaren and I just ride... nothing special to say..no amazing talents.. I like to ride to work and errands in town. I've ridden group road rides and alone. Ride tandem with my husband now that the daughter has gotten older. I just like to ride. (haven't tried mtn...maybe this summer.)

Explanation of your avatar: when i make one I'll let you know

Age 45

Occupation: School Library Media Assistant

Favorite bike: My old-reliable-poorly-fitted-heavy-as-sin Univega Gran Rally circa 1976. My spouse finally got me off of it with a gift certificate last Christmas, and now I have a new 1500 trek wsd road. (I couldn't quite part with the Univega, however, and now my daughter who has grown a little taller that I am is riding it!)

What's in your stable? Too many bikes for a single car garage. The above mentioned as well as our Burley Duet Tandem and a "towner" hybrid bike for the errands and such. (Plus my hubby's two bikes and my son's bike and my daughter's other bike and a "project" vintage tandem. Yikes! guess we'll have to throw out the lawn mower.

Fastest speed on a road bike? downhill.

Picture of yourself digital pix i don't have.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: That I don't know much about riding...then I started counting the years and miles.....

Most memorable moment on my bike: Our first kinda "long" ride was the Monster Cookie Metric century out of Salem Oregon, and we didn't have very good gear. My husband was "pulling" our daughter (9 yrs old)on a tagalong bike and I was riding myself. It was a tail wind for the entire first half of the ride....then we turned around. Uh oh. The weather turned ugly...rain and wind. We got cold and bone tired but my daughter kept us going. She kept singing ....Zippety do dah, zippety ay...my oh my what a wonderful day... I remembered that it was all about having FUN. We made it to the end, got our monster cookie, and are still riding.

Most fun ever had on a bike? It's always more fun on a bike.

Explanation of your handle: On Usenet, there are often many Alisons in a given newsgroup and/or it's preferred that you post your location with every message, so I've gotten in the habit of signing my name and state: Alison (in OH)

Explanation of your avatar: That's the bride topper from my wedding cake. The groom was a little green worm in a tophat. ;)

Age (general or specific) Let's just say I'm in the throes of a quarter-life crisis. ;) OK, I'm 25.

Occupation: Chemistry department secretary

Favorite bike: I loves me my funky custom steel bike, but if I could get my hands on anything with modern components (ie DA 10-speed) I'd be a happy camper!

What's in your stable? My bike was custom-built by a master builder in the Waterford factory, I bought him used some 5 or 6 years ago. He's a 52 cm steel beauty, I posted his picture in the "do you name your bike" thread (I've called him Spartacus for years). DH has a slew of Cannondales (his current race bike is a Six13) plus his rain bike and single speed built on no-name frames...I can't keep up though, he's constantly buying and selling bikes on eBay!

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Last season I clocked speeds in the 30s every time I did a particular descent into the Chagrin River Valley (the local stomping grounds for road riding). On the flat, I seem to recall hitting 27 on the way out to the valley.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Just the one for now.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm not that much of a liar.

Most memorable moment on my bike: It's not a pleasant memory, but I'll never forget bonking about 10 miles from home last fall. *shudder* I was miserable, and could barely even stand -- I had to walk my bike up everything with the slightest incline, fortunately I was only one rise away from coasting all the way home.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Man, I have a blast every time I go out, but especially when I'm riding with a fast group and keeping up at 18+ mph on the climbs...

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Err...

Hey Wabisabi- Don't you have a century ride up there sometime next fall? You live in one of my favorite areas in California! We (Dave (my partner) and I have spent many weeks camping up there in the wonderful redwoods. We were the last people(I'm not kidding) to walk in the Headwaters before the restoration was to begin. We saw what Pacifc Lumber had done to that exquisite area and were apalled!  We also have met Julia Butterfly Hill (she was here in our town supporting our efforts to keep some old oak trees from being cut down...we won, so far).

I would LOVE to ride up there! Maybe some of us can come and ride with you later in the summer. ;)

You are indeed a lucky woman :)

Where do you live? Missouri

Explanation of your handle: Love singletrack and a bit knuckleheadedly stubborn

Explanation of your avatar: That's my boyo!!

Age (general or specific) 37
Occupation: stay at home ma

Favorite bike: currently my supercaliber

What's in your stable? my '91 Trek 850 Antelope, '93 Trek 930 Singletrack, '95ish Gary Fischer Supercaliber (easter egg green), '98 Raleigh R700, DH's steel Colnago, Ellsworth Truth, Canondale hardtail, 20 year old Trek roadbike, 3 kids' bikes and a partridge in a pear tree.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 55mph, last downhill on Ragbrai. 42mph on the 930 trek, Fred's Lunchbox, Vail mountain, Co.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? No way, dude. Ya gotta catch me 'fore you'll get a pic of me!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Few and far between-too hard to keep track of the truth as it is.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Getting Knocked out (I'm told it was about 5 minutes) and breaking my collarbone during a MTB race. Coming to, waving off help, getting back on the bike and finishing the last 2 1/2 laps of the 3 lap race as is, catching everyone who passed me while I was out and winning the race. See? Knuckleheaded.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Bike vacations to Colorado, Utah, North Carolina, Iowa, etc.

Loved it! We camped at Gunison and did the 401. We also did the ****, if I've got the trail name right. Gorgeous! There's so many excellent trails to ride all around you, it's so hard to choose. I loved the small town feel of Crested Butte though I bet you go a little nuts from the out-of-towners.
Do you have one you particularly enjoy?
Have you ever done Monarch Pass?? Hermosa Creek?

Ok, they didn't like for me to use that word! Gosh, I'm not trying to be derogatory or anything, already. It was the dutch boy with his finger in the ____ trail, alright?

I never did ride Monarch or Hermosa. So much singletrack right out the door, it was hard to pack up the car to DRIVE (heaven forbid) to a ride. I did do that to ride the Raggeds my last season there. 401 is fabulous - that's the trail I talk about riding to 11,200 in profavelo's pregnancy thread. I first did that trail when I was about 16 weeks. It's different every week, as the foliage changes. I like it best in late summer when the cow parsnip and skunk cabbage whack you on the legs, and sometimes the face, as you whip by. Thinking about it now, I can see every single section of the ride! Don't know about the d@m trail. Where was it?

singletrackmind
04-15-2005, 01:03 PM
The dutch boy with his finger in the d_ke trail starts
from the Lake Irwin campground. Heavy duty descents in places, I had my v-brakes full-on and was in no danger of coming to a halt-my husband's discs turned blue, they got so hot.
It was really beautiful-very technical in places, too. I thought it really weird to see where people had long ago carved names/dates into some of the aspens, not that I'd condone or ever do something like that.
We actually started from the bottom of the trail and rode the road up to the beginning, same as we did 401. I just found out there's another trail that makes it a loop if you want to stay off the road.

We did the 401 in early July-TONS of grasshoppers!
(crunch crunch crunch-ugh) It was beautiful despite.

I love both Monarch and Hermosa Creek. You can really get flying on the whoop-de-doos on Monarch on parts and the part where the mountains meet is beautiful (the keyhole). Take either a map or someone who's been, though. There were a couple of places where it gets a little confusing. Hermosa creek has a major gorgeous factor, too.

I can see how you'd never feel a need to bike anywhere beyond your back door, I sure wish MO was like that. I just keep telling myself that the tradeoff is a longer riding season (and nobody remind me about the southwestern part of CO, either!).

Oh, the Dike Trail (misspelling intentional)! That's one of those rides, well, I ride it once every year .... and I still don't like it. Rocks and waterbars - not my favorite. Especially last year, I was rehabbing a knee, was in grave danger of reinjury and resurgery if I landed funny, so I was ultra-cautious, though I do remember ripping the downhill :D!!! Also another one I first rode when pregnant!

Snowtulip, are you talking about looping The Dike or 401?

Explanation of your handle: It's one I've been using for a while. I work in IT, if that means anything to anyone :)

Explanation of your avatar: Yeah I need to get me one of those don't I?

Age (general or specific) 29

Occupation: Programmer/Graduate Student (I prefer the 2nd one)

Favorite bike: I think it's my new Lemond Zurich

What's in your stable? Trek 1200 (2004), Lemond Zurich (2005), Trek 850 (1997)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 38, on a downhill during RAGBRAI 2004. I was freaking out.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Yeah I need to get me one of those too :)

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Uh....

Most memorable moment on my bike: Last year on RAGBRAI, I was able to hang with the faster riders on my team for a 30 mile stretch, averaging probably 20 mph. I about died when we reached the town, but I definitely earned some props that day.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Got caught riding in the rain, and ended up on a "dirt" road that had since turned to mud. Had no choice but to take it, and after riding in the cold rain most of the morning I just started laughing like a lunatic. It apparently was contagious because my fellow riders also just started giggling right with me. Made that mud road go by a bit faster, that's for sure.

Explanation of your avatar: None so far.

Age (general or specific) 27

Occupation: Researcher (sociology of science mostly) / Beginning PhD in September at UBC in Vancouver, British Columbia (so I will be able to ride nearly all year long!!)

Favorite bike: Modified Miele Uno, but I just got it so does it count?

What's in your stable? A Miele Uno road bike (2005) with the components from a Rocky Mountain Solo 30 ; Trek 7200 cross (2004)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I'm working on this. Only 40 km/h (20 mph) so far, but I just started testing the new baby... Can't wait to bring it faster. Downhills don't count.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Not yet.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Hum. I probably have the right to remain silent.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Actually I was off the bike. At 3 years old, I was riding in circles with my brother (who was about 7 at the time) in our house's driveway. Somehow, my brother fell into the small stream behind the house and I ran to my parents crying for help, kind of running while dragging the bike by the right handle. (Yeah, I remember it was the right handle.) Once in a while, my Dad still tells the story and laughs his head off. (My bro' was alright, by the way.)

Most fun ever had on a bike? Every ride is just great. Even greater with a tailwind. Feels like flying...

I'm glad to become part of this community. You gals are great, and a great source of inspiration (and tips too!)

Where do you live? Sacramento, California

Explanation of your handle: I have been using it for so long that I no longer remember.

Explanation of your avatar: My lack of an avatar, you mean? I have never gotten around to taking a picture of my bike, and nobody wants to see my picture there.

Age (general or specific): 35

Occupation: Lawyer, just finished a master's degree in English

Favorite bike: My Bianchi Veloce. I love it more than I love several of my pets.

What's in your stable? '03 Bianchi Veloce, '02 Specialized Crossroads, '05 Specialized Rockhopper, '63 Schwinn Hollywood that I've probably still put more miles on than all the others combined.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Speed frightens me and I have to remember not to hit the brakes going downhill. Probably 27 mph on a downhill, and I might have been screaming at the time.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? See above, re: avatars. Here's me in Mexico last year (that is not my ugly van):

http://www.xeney.com/images/memexico.jpg

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I am a lawyer. I refuse to answer this question.

Most memorable moment on my bike: I think probably it was this weekend when I was dodging a post on the bike trail and my husband called back to warn me that I was about to run over a baby rattlesnake.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Actually I am pretty sure it was my first time ever on a road bike. My then-boyfriend (now husband) had been trying to get me to ride for years, and I'd been pedaling that tank of a Crossroads around on the bike trial for about a year, and he finally talked me into getting a road bike. The test rides were not too scary, and I really loved the Veloce as soon as I rode it, but I was still not sure I was ever going to love it until we went on our first ride the night I bought it, and I suddenly learned that road bikes go fast! I still love it but that first ride was such a revelation.

Explanation of your handle:
I have always wanted to be called Raven - I first found it as a name in a book about Morgaine - sister to King Arthur of Camelot. Raven was one of the priestesses of Avalon. RoadRaven --- cause I love to cycle on the road... :p

Explanation of your avatar:
None needed - I'll be putting a Raven there... self-explanatory...

Age (general or specific):
Late 30s

Occupation:
Adult tutor/lecturer

Favorite bike:
My Scorpion - it's red with matching red tyres - red makes you go faster, don't you know? ;)

What's in your stable?
Well... the bikes in the stable attached to this house number ten.
Personally, I have an Avanti Black Thunder, which I rarely ride. And my Scorpio 2001 RA 200. I look forward to adding a TimeTrial bike in 6-8 months if I can develop enough endurance not to be ashamed to ride one...

Fastest speed on a road bike?
I'm afraid I'm not brave enough to do more than about 60km downhill, and the fastest I can cycle to so far on the flat is only 40km per hour (but I can't sustain that for long... yet!)

Most memorable moment on my bike:
Finishing my first road race. I actually did it, and in a respectable time despite a crash 10km from the finish line. That was pretty cool. (LOL... finishing, not crashing!!!)

Most fun ever had on a bike?
Riding with my family... with my daughter... my sons -thats always fun :) With my partner - thats the best.

Carpentersville, Illinois

Age (general or specific):
23

Occupation:

Favorite bike:
I love both my Cannondale bikes!

What's in your stable?
My Cannondale R700, my very first bike (since my 10 speed in gradeschool), just started riding last September, and it's quickly becoming an obsession of mine. Someday, I'll trade up for the R5000! Just got my Cannondale mountain bike this week, and can't wait to overcome some fears on the trails in Kettle Moraine, WI.

Fastest speed on a road bike?
Well, I'm going to be honest and say that I'm just starting to not break all the way down the hills (everybody needs to start somewhere), so only about 27 mph.

Most memorable moment on my bike:
The day that I got back on my bike (after a quick stop) to travel the 20 miles back home, and felt an overwhelming feeling of love for the sport of cycling (and my bike).

Most fun ever had on a bike?
Riding with boyfriend (who got me to buy my first bike) on this really hilly trail as fast as I could to keep up with him. It was, and always is a complete blast! The longest I've gone so far is 50 miles, and right now I'm concentrating on adding speed. I'm doing the American Lung Association Ride on June 3-5 (150 miles - 50 miles each day), and already signed up for my very first century (Apple Cider) in September, so I have plenty of time to train. My favorite thing about being on my bike is the feeling of freedom while I'm riding, and the feeling of pride when I've just pushed myself to the max!

Explanation of your avatar: First image I found on google.

Age (general or specific) Just turned 49. Intend to stay there.

Occupation: Public relations exec in higher education.

Favorite bike: Shhhh, can't tell them there's a favorite.

What's in your stable? An '04 Gary Fisher Big Sur and an '04 Cannondale SR800.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 36.5 mph down a hill at a local state park. First time I did it I went 31.5 and didn't kill myself, so I'm working on feathering the brakes less and less to get to 40. I firmly believe that downhills count. ;) On the flats, I'd say about 26 mph, hauling heiny.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Not yet.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: No, I dont' mind at all. (Maybe not the biggest, but probably the most frequent. :)

Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, there's memorable both good and bad. Good? Probably just finishing my first group ride; it was a great start. Or maybe breaking my speed record on that hill with a big grin. Bad? Probably the day I was trying clipless for the 2nd day, couldn't clip out and fell over hard at a 3-way stop. Bounced the back of my head on the pavement (yay for strong helmets) and passengers of all 3 cars jumped out asking "Are you OK?" Yeah, only hurt my pride...

Most fun ever had on a bike? Every time I go out on my road bike I have more fun than the last ride.

Age (general or specific): too old to be asked, too young to care...just something I like to say in order to avoid the question...but really 34

Occupation: Digital Image Designer (fancy name for Photoshop guru)

Favorite bike: My first real MTBike...the obsession begins :D A birthday present from my fiance after just a month of dating.

What's in your stable? Santa Cruz SL Juliana & soon a road bike (still deciding...which is what brought me to this wonderful forum in the first place!)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Don't have a road bike yet...but about 5 or 8 on my fiance's which is twice too big for me. 28 on a MTBike.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? working on that too...

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm fine!

Most memorable moment on my bike: I traded my pink Huffy for a beautiful blue 12 speed Schwinn (this was YEARS ago) and rode as fast as I could through the streets of my neighborhood, through the park, back to the fire roads over this jump I had done many, many times before on my trusty Huffy...Let's just say road wheels were not made for jumping. I guess I am a true trail rider at heart. Although, I am very excited to experience road riding!

Most fun ever had on a bike? When my fiance, then "just dating", realized I loved to ride...I knew that I had him hooked! Now if I could just do a wheelie! :p

Most memorable moment on my bike: that five mile ride on the Eliza Furnace trail that took me an hour due to the steep hill I had to hike.

Most fun ever had on a bike? a) at 10 yrs young, teaching myself to ride on my sisters bike that collected dust for three years in the foyer b) my first day commuting 2.5 miles to work in 7 mins during morning rush hour; and passing my sister and brother-in-law w/family in their SUV c) completing the five miles on the Eliza Furnace trail. Hi all, another newbie here. Except for some recreational rides, and three short-range triathlons about ten years ago, I have been out of biking until just recently. It didn't take too many miles to remember what I always loved about it.

Real Name : Sue

Where do you live? West Milwaukee, WI

Explanation of your handle : Initials and beginning of last name

Explanation of your avatar : I'll get around to having one someday.

Age (general or specific) : Will be 45 this summer

Occupation : Office Manager

Favorite Bike : My new Trek 2100

What's in your stable : Trek 2100, Old Bianchi (Around 1990), Timberlin Hybrid (Passed that down to my husband...it was one of my excuses to get a new bike)

Fastest speed on a road bike : Can't remember from my old biking days. With the new bike probably not much over 30mph....too many spring potholes and loose gravel around here to trust going much faster.

Another picture of yourself or your ride ? I like taking pictures, not being in them

What is the biggest lie you've ever told : Well.... the latest wasn't really a lie... I just didn't bother to correct my husband when he assumed that I spend around $300 on my bike. He's pretty much learned that if he probably doesn't really want to know the answer, he won't ask a direct question.

Most memorable moment on a bike? Quite a few years ago, I was about 5 miles into the 2nd day of a 2-Day 150 mile bike club ride when I took a left turn at the bottom of a long steep downhill, of course I hit a patch of gravel and ended up skidding through the intersection on my thigh. I wrapped it up with a towel and kept riding. It took a long time for the scars to go away and I still have a few black dots that show through my leg from gravel that I failed to clean out.

Most fun ever on a bike? Everytime I go out now I feel like I never want to stop, so I'm sure my most fun is yet to come. I have plans to do some great rides this summer.

I'm so lucky that my daughter's boyfriend is a mechanic at my LBS. With my new biking obsession it's better than having a doctor in the family. Luckily, he still has at least another year of college, so he won't be moving off to another career too soon. We drive my daughter nuts when we get into long bike gear discussions.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Just the other day, my 20 something daughter and I were on our daily ride. I passed her going up a hill, on the way home and I still had enough breath left to gloat!

Most fun ever had on a bike? DH and I spent just about every Sunday last summer on the local Centennial Trail or Trail of the Coeur d' Alene. We had a great time. We even hit a new low by getting a kids trailer and bringing our two little dogs along with us. We sure made alot of people smile! :)

I love the statement 50 is the *new* 30 ... and I couldn't agree more.

I took a cue from Oprah who said that she was looking forward to her 50th birthday and when she was finished turning 50 everyone was going to look forward to turning 50.

Biking has and continues to play an important part of helping me define who I am. I love the age that I am and will continue to be grateful for every age that I am blessed to experience.

Lisa - I hope you'll post a photo of your bike with your dogs in the carrier. DH and I have talked about getting a burley (as many of you have heard me mention in the past, we have four resident English cockers) and DH's dog, Lucy (aka The Queen of Everything) would look splendid in a burley as would any of the others :D

Welcome Tu, Sue, and BikerHen!!

I believe we might have enough midwesterners to organize a ride like the Amici Veloce team! SJCzar, Biking Chick, Loni...I'm up for it!!

Let's get some discussion going on this ... would be nice to find a time when we could get together!

Count me in ..... as long as you're willing to stop and wait up for me once in awhile. Distance doesn't seem to be as much problem since I've come back to biking, but I haven't really got my speed up to what it should be yet....especially on the hills.

With our weather now heading back into a more winterish direction, I guess I won't get to go on the long ride I had planned for Saturday. I little cold isn't bad, but I don't want to take my baby out in rain, slush or whatever it is their calling for on Sat.

I don't know if this was just a weird thing where I grew up (NJ) but let me see if you know what I mean:
zip zap zooey zip zap

Does that mean anything to you as a vw van fan?

Sorry, we never talked like that. :) But my formative years were spent in So. California so maybe that has something to do with it! Although I do have a hard time relating any phrase that includes "zip" with a VW van. Hey! My biking style is just like my van. Slow, gasp, don't stop on the uphill because you will never get started again. Then . . . pedal like mad on the downhill :D So what does - zip zap zooey zip zap - mean? Inquiring minds what to know? bikerHen

Well we did take some pic on a ride last summer but it may take a few days to figure out how to publish them to this site. I actually did some research into dog trailers, yes, they do make trailers just for dogs! I goolged bike trailers and found a company that specializes in dog trailers. The biggest difference being the axel is located more in the center of the trailer where a dogs center of gravity would be. My lovable but cheap DH firmly declined to spend that kind of money on "a couple of dogs". So, we got a cheap version at the local department store that he modified. Having said all that, it really is a kick taking the dogs. The dogs seem to have fun as long as were moving but want out as soon as we stop. Kinda like kids! bikerHen

Tlkiwi, your mom is an artist! How beautiful - my favorite is "Oh to be in India" - I'm a sucker for those bright colors to cheer up long midwestern winters. Now, dang you guys! I used to quilt way back before kids, chores, etc. and now you're gonna wake up my sleeping (and expensive) fabric monster. Yes, I've got the bag in the basement with about three or four quilts' worth of fabric, etc. I never got to. Must..concentrate..on...new...bike!!!

Most memorable moment on my bike: The summer before first grade I was at the top of a very steep street. I asked my friend if I could ride his bike down the street, he of course said yes. I took off down the hill and half way down realized his bike had hand brakes and I only knew how to use coaster brakes. I hit a curb at the bottom of the hill, flipped over the handle bars and started first grade with stiches a black eye and fresh wounds on both knees and elbows. His bike was fine and I still love to ride.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Every ride is fun but I love long road rides with a group of strong women.

Age (general or specific) 45

Occupation: Library dweeb

Favorite bike: My trusty hyperactive Trek 7500fx Hybrid

What's in your stable? Upstairs: the aforementioned rig. Downstairs: my warhorse 12-speed Centurion road bike, on a Cycleops trainer

Most memorable moment on my bike: Outracing a Michigan thunderstorm that came up suddenly one afternoon in the summer. For a fleeting moment, I and the bike were ONE and we had the same idea: GETthehellouttahere! A true moment of the machine transcending the merely human.

Most fun ever had on a bike? When I was 16 I rode a Diabetes Association bike-a-thon near my hometown of Flint, MI. This was the mid-70s and everyone *else* had a 10-speed, while I had a Raleigh Sports 3-speed. I rode two 20-mile laps that day, climbed hills where other riders were walking their road bikes, and slept the best sleep of my life afterwards.

What's in your stable? Specialized Allez Sport

Fastest speed on a road bike? 28 or 28.5, going downhill

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Oh yeah, we shamelessly brag about the HHH 100 on my webshots sight.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: It's okay that you pucked on me, really.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Not this bike, but years ago on a 50 mile Steaming Wheels ride, when a cow, that was in a fenced area, started running alongside us, and me, although I grew up on a cattle ranch, was terrified and rode like crazy to get away from the cow. Hmmm....I think I might have topped that 28.5 mph I mentioned on the downhill. Hubby still gives me heck when we pass fenced cows on the rode. I make a point of saying, "moo" to them.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Ya know, everytime I am on the bike I think it is the best time ever. To ride with my husband is heaven for me, because for years I rode horses and did endurance riding and he hates horses, and I missed having him there. To have finally found something we are both crazy about is just the icing on this so far 21 year cake!

Welcome Mercury/Sarah from SadieKate/Sarah, another Mercian owner. I have a 1981 Mercian King of Mercia given to me by my hubby for Xmas years and years ago.

Email the nice folks at Mercian (http://www.merciancycles.co.uk/) and give them the serial number. Voila! You will have your info and you can ask for a nice pretty new color catalogue.

I'm lusting after a Miss Mercia for a townbike, not that I NEED one. But then there is Rivendell Glorius too. Maybe I need them all! :D

BarbFortunately only one was really complicated. A bone graft and realignment called a tibial tubercle elevation. I had a 55mm screw in my knee for a year and could feel the head of the screw through the skin. That was the weirdest feeling. I don't know that knee surgery is any harder than others. I would think that if bone is involved it's painful no matter what bone it is. I used to play tennis and 6-man volleyball with a vengeance, but no more. Cycling all the way! It's a great experience, isn't it?

Well I'm fully into pre season training right now and the race season starts at the beginning of June. Sadly the race at Big Bear has been cancelled and now the first race is in Utah. I was really looking forward to BB as I never go to sea otter and BB is kinda the kick off to the season. This year I will be doing most of the western Norba's as well as the world cup in New Mexico. I will also be trying to defend my national title for the third year in Canada.

If any of you are coming to any of the races please come up and introduce yourself, I'm always happy to meet new people.

Hi, everybody!

Real name: Paula (no imagination, apparently!)
Where do you live? Larchmont, NY

Age (general or specific) 52

Occupation: Editor/Publisher of online community newspaper

Favorite bike: Loved my old Raleigh 10-speed back in college, but it was stolen years ago.

What's in your stable? Now I have a Trek 2100, to replace a Gary Fisher hybrid that's just too heavy and slow for the kind of riding I want to do now.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I have no idea.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I just started riding again, seriously, and haven't been taking the camera along yet.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Is this a bike-lie or just lies in general? I'll have to think on it.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Last summer, I was riding along a salt marsh on Martha's Vineyard. The osprey nest I had passed every day for weeks suddenly had occupants, after being empty for months. I stopped and watched in fascination as the mother and father ospreys swooped in, bringing a nice seafood lunch to the four or five babies in the nest. If I'd been going by in the car, I wouldn't have noticed this lovely scene.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Every day, as I get stronger.

Where do you live? Olathe, KS

Explanation of your handle: It’s what everyone calls me.

Explanation of your avatar: Need to find one.

Age (general or specific) 48 and never felt better.

Occupation: IT Project Manager, mother and aspiring quilt artist.

Favorite bike: Trek Pilot

What's in your stable? Trek Pilot 2.1 (Speedy) and Cannondale C500 (Pokey).

Fastest speed on a road bike? 35 MPH, going down a very steep hill during a group ride. The guy behind me said he could smell my brakes the entire time. I don’t feel comfortable going that fast.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Don't have any yet!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: My weight on my driver’s license – it’s what I weighed before I got pregnant with my son. The woman at DMV rolled her eyes when I told her my weight and she said “are you sure?”. I use it as a goal to strive for.

Most memorable moment on my bike: I tried out a new bike trail that I can only describe as an enchanted forest. The trees were sky high, the path was so cool because of the deep shade and it was ever so quiet. I was the only one there riding on this wonderful path. It took my breath away.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Flying down Nicollet Street on my CoasterKing bike with playing cards in my spokes.

KS = Kansas, the state God made to block the headwinds from cyclists in Missouri. Some days the winds are just terrible. :)

Thanks for bringing back memories for me. I spent (a very hot) 8 days in your state during my 2002 cross-country tour (http://denise2002xc.crazyguyonabike.com), and I remember the wind. I was lucky though - most days it was coming from the side (sometimes combined with a headwind), and I even had a day of tailwinds! Dumb luck, I guess.

Real name: Beth
Where do you live? A teeny tiny town in Upstate South Carolina

Explanation of your handle: It’s what my hubby has called me since we dated. It’s like Jethro, from the Beverly Hillbillies, but more feminine.

Explanation of your avatar: it makes me laugh

Age (general or specific) 40

Occupation: Stay-at-home-mom (the ultimate oxymoron since I’m rarely home)

Favorite bike: My mountain bike. I think it's the prettiest bike in the garage. Plus, it is very faithful and hasn't collapsed under me yet.

What's in your stable? 2004 Trek 4300 (mine), various other Trek products belonging to my hubby, daughter, and son, a really fancy teal and pink huffy (5 year old’s) and two groovy vintage Schwinns from my youth (one even has a banana seat).

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 35 mph on my mountain bike on the road, every time I go down a certain hill near our home. (we live in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains and it’s hilly around here!)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I’m the photographer of the family, which means there are very few pictures of me, period. I don’t think I have one of me on my bike…may have to work on that!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Driver's License weight...haven't seen that weight in years. But when I renew the license they don't ask, so I don't tell. I can dream, can't I?

Most memorable moment on my bike: Finishing my first 40+ mile road ride Mother’s Day weekend (on my mountain bike)

Most fun ever had on a bike? We took our kids to ride the Virginia Creeper trail last fall. It was 17 miles of downhill coasting through these little bike-friendly towns. It was beautiful and the kids just loved that trip! Our 5 year old sang “She’ll be comin’ round the mountain when she comes” for most of the 17 miles she rode in the bike trailer behind her dad.

Hi Denise, I enjoyed reading about your travels through Kansas in the summer. Hot and windy pretty much describes it. I'm originally from Iowa so I'm not familiar with the area you went through. You've inspired me to think about a fun biking trip for my 50th birthday.

Hi SingleTrackMind, I'm not sure what part of MO you're from but we've got 15 - 30 mph winds predicted for Wednesday in the KCMO area. :p

St. Louis county. I'll be pulling the trailer on the confluence trail (St. Louis to Alton, IL) tomorrow which tends to be terribly windy anyway, something about being on the Missippi I guess, so you just hang on tight to those headwinds for me. I'll take the tails, I was doing 22 mph with baby trailer on the return last I was there and feeling like I was hardly working. Ahhhhh.....

Oh, just realized tomorrow's tuesday! Well, block that wind for me too...

Another picture of yourself or your ride? nah, I'm not that interesting

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: No lies, never. They're not worth the trouble.

Most memorable moment on my bike: The finish line of my first century.
