Real name: Catherine ("Katie") Schutz

Where do you live? Newbury, Massachusetts

Explanation of your handle: It's really pretty unoriginal, but self-explanatory... (I hope)

Explanation of your avatar: I don't have one yet, but I can almost guarantee you that it will be Fairuza, my little grey Arab mare

Age (general or specific): 23 - DOB 9/14/1983

Occupation: Medical Assistant (and aspiring pre-med student)

Favorite bike: Mine! Sparkly purple Specialized Dolce... but I have been drooling over the Ruby, and the Orbea Diva since becoming a (more) avid cyclist!

What's in your stable? Specialized Dolce, Trek 4500 WSD HT MTB... and literally in the stable is Fairuza, a 14.2 Arabian mare :)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I wish I had an exact number... so let's just say fast enough to find bugs imbedded in my forehead upon returning home.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Not at the moment, but hopefully soon!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I've never lied... not even a little bit!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, I bought my Trek MTB in early 2005, to replace a 10+ year old Diamondback Sorrento that I had been riding around the surrounding towns for the past couple of years. My distances increased - as did my physical discomfort, and desire to ride on trails a bit more (which, despite being a MTB, this bike was not suited for) then I discovered that they made bikes with suspension (gasp!)... so, of course I wanted one. I checked out the 2005 Trek 4500 WSD online, instantly fell in love with the *color* (which is turquoise - coincidentally it was the bike that ended up being just right for me), and went down to my bike shop to inquire within. They had one that fit me like a glove, but it was on hold. It would be a few weeks before they had another one in and built, and I started to second guess my decision to buy a new bike. They took my name, and within an hour of leaving the shop, they called and said the person who had it on hold called to let them know they changed their mind - so, I walked back to the shop and rode home on my lovely new turquoise bike :)

Most fun ever had on a bike? Hmmm... I feel like my answer will always be "the last time I went out!" (which is usually 'yesterday', or 'an hour ago'). Though, the first time I went out with a large (35+) group of cyclists from my LBS - less than 2 weeks ago - was definitely a new and very fun experience for me. This is my first year road biking, and I am completely absorbed in the wonderful sense of community when I'm with the other local cyclists!

I have been visiting the TE forums for a few weeks now, and find it to be the single most reliable and informative place that I have found so far. I'm so glad to found the site, and joined the forums... can't wait to get to know everyone!

Deja Vu
05-19-2007, 09:08 AM
A warm hello and a re-introduction!

Handle: Deja Vu. Why? I had been somewhat active here approximately 2 years ago. I then was not able to bike for a full year. I can bike now again and have wanted to return. :)

I was lurking some and trying to recall my handle used then. (I have participated in lots of different forums and have had different names.) I'd realized that if I could recall my name here on this forum, I no longer have the old email address, either. So..any password retrieval would not work through the email address on file here. I'd finally decided to just re-register.
Hence: Deja Vu, as it feel like I had done this before.(I am still looking for the notebook that has my ID in it for this board! If I discover it, I will give my real identity! lol)

I live in New England, USA.

I am in my mid-40s! (ouch!)

What is in stable? Well, my side of the stable has a K2 comfort bike, a Giant Iguana (HT) and a Trek 1200 (road). Hubby has a Cannondale Prophet, a Trek 1200 and...I forget what the other one is.

Biggest Lie: Lie? Would I tell a lie?

Most memorable: To this day, my best times riding were when I was a teenager, riding my Schwinn Continental (road bike, 12 spd). This was a very hot bike in my town at the time. I had worked many "odd jobs" to earn this bike! (That was back when Schwinn could only be found in bike shops. It later went on to big box stores and is now back making some higher end bikes! Go Schwinn! Glad to see it make a comeback. Nostalgia.)

I'd loved to take off on a ride. So peaceful, relaxing and exhilarating, all at the same time. Looking back, I can see it was a healthy escape from a very big family and a very hectic household! It was my zen!;)

One of the most fun was: My husband was into mountain bike riding. I was not. I took him to a bike shop and had him try out a road bike! (He had never been on one!) He found it quite fun! I bought him the bike. The following day, after the bike-fitting session, etc. We went riding together. I love to see people discover an aspect of cycling they may not be familair with...especially if they are thrilled with it! It's so much fun to watch other discover joy in cycling!

I may have missed something? I think I have covered the basics anyway.

It's good to be back at TeamE!:D

Hello!

Real Name: Carol

Where do you live? Marin County, NoCal

Explanation of your handle: just an abbreviation of my name

Explanation of your avatar:huh?

Age: 54

Occupation: news director at a hospital

Favorite Bike: my new bianchi and my old tandem

What's in your stable: see above

Fastest speed on a road bike? I think 35 or 40 going downhill on our tandem.

Biggest lie I've ever told: I love my job.

Most memorable moment on a bike: The first time my husband and I climbed White's Hill outside Fairfax without stopping. I'm a new rider about to do ALC Lifecycle, so I'm sure I'll have some very memorable moments soon.

Most fun ever had on a bike: The second day of the Jon Pon Memorial ride, riding down Route 1, the sun shining and the ocean on our right.

Real name: Natira

Where do you live? San Francisco, CA

Explanation of your handle: Natira got shortened to Nat which then earned it's silent G sometime when I was 12 years old. The bug theme has since followed me all this time. My handlebar tape even has flies printed all over it.

Explanation of your avatar: Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race down the steep switchbacks of Lombard Street in San Francisco. This was before I covered my body in bruises.

Age (general or specific): 30 and lovin' it!

Occupation: Biotech scientist nerd

Favorite bike: Saving up for something new and spiffy. Probably a Specialized Ruby Expert that I toyed around with one day and made me fly up the hills. I've already named her, so I'm doomed.

What's in your stable? An aluminum Trek 1100 from the good ol' days. "Cheddar".

Fastest speed on a road bike? 42mph just yesterday! *vroom*

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Me and Greg!
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=487395709&size=m

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: That I've never told one.

Most memorable moment on my bike: When I was about 13 years old, I rode with my dad for a few days on one of those multi-day camping trips through Wisconsin. It was hot and hilly and my purple girl's ten speed didn't make it up one of the bigger slopes. The next year, I had a new bike (a REAL one), had several hundred miles of training and funny tan lines, and I made it up that darn hill without stopping. Took me forever, and I think I squirted all the contents of my waterbottles onto my head, but by golly, I MADE IT.

Most fun ever had on a bike?

madscot13
05-25-2007, 10:39 PM
Real name: Madeline
Where do you live? St. Paul, MN

Explanation of your handle: Madscot is a play on Madeline and everyone calle me Mads (I don't know if that is a play on my temperament?). the Scot comes from our school masccot- the Scot. And the 13 is my lucky number.

Explanation of your avatar: that picture? I used to get really bored at the chemistry stockroom where I worked. Let's just say it became an exercise in finding ways to entertain myself for multiple hours on end. So one day, I found that box and made an angry face by punching holes for eyes, making angry eyebrows, and a squiggly snarl. I became the Box Monster! So I ran around the science building growling and running through labs and lurking outside bathrooms trying to give professors heart attacks. I even showed up at the Halloween and Christmas party as the Box Monster. ps in the senior class picture it is very easy to find me...

the one thing I never did was put dryer vent trunk-like tubing on for arms.

Age (general or specific) 22 on May 13!

Occupation: Unemployed but trying to find a science/health related job I will love

Favorite bike: own a trek 520 so near and dear to this corrugated heart. I don't know much about bikes but I know that my lugged steel has stolen my heart.

What's in your stable? see above

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 36 mph down the Grand Ave hill(some think it is the Summit Ave hill)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? This is a picture of me after I took an awkward tumble in the snow while snowshoeing. I thrashed quite a bit while I was trying to stand up. My roommate thought I was in writhing agony. I wasn't. I was in sheer joy!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I am a compulsive liar and a blatant exaggerist, so they are all big lies!

Most memorable moment on my bike: I am not really sure- I think I will have to get back to you all on that one. Although I really enjoy it when bikers wave at me as they pass, it makes me feel like I am in the cool crowd.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I think waking up for National Bike to Work Day at 6:00 when I am unemployed and following everyone else to their jobs was pretty great. I just got my roommate to go biking with me so I am sure there will be more fun to come!

Getting to Know You!

Real name: Jessica
Where do you live? Shiocton, WI (near Green BAy)

Explanation of your handle: I loved the saying!
Explanation of your avatar: Not sure how to do that
Age (general or specific) 41

Occupation: Economic Support Specialist

Favorite bike: only know the ones I have and depends on what I am doing, for comfort my giant hybrid is sooo comfy - still tweeking the road bike, just got it a couple weeks ago, so just started riding.

What's in your stable? I have a tri colored paint and a buckskin...... oh you mean my bikes :D I have a trek mountain, new giant hybrid, and a used but looks new raliegh sport road bike.

Fastest speed on a road bike? not sure yet, need to get the computer. Been up to 20 on my hybrid on flat road with the wind to my back ;)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? No pictures yet :( Will have to try to take some soon.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Telling my children there were things like the Easter Bunny, Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy.

Most memorable moment on my bike: I just really started to ride, I had the mountain bike for a few years but never enjoyed riding because the saddle really irritated my bottom. I didn't know all about the different saddles and such until I purchased by Hybrid last fall. I then took a cycling class at the Y over winter and loved it so wanted to get into road riding. Asked the lady at the cycling shop if they ever got used road bikes and she said no but the guy standing behind me said his wife was selling hers and she hardly ever road it. He was selling if the exact amount I had to spend ( was just meant to be) The bike was perfect size for me - his wife was 5'4" and I am 5'10" - I know why she hardly road it!! I am not sure how she staddled the bar.

So my most memorable moment so far would be today when I went for a ride with my daughter. She road my hybrid and I road my road bike.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding down the big hill by my house. The ride up is torture but I look forward to the ride down. Love the feel of speed :D weeeeeeeee!!!!

Real name: Jennifer

Where do you live? Rancho Cucamonga, California (Southern Ca.)

Explanation of your handle: A nickname version of my real name

Explanation of your avatar: Don't have one yet

Age (general or specific) 37 and 11/12ths! (38 next month)

Occupation: Homemaker / Homeschool Mom

Favorite bike: Cannondale Caad 9 with Dura Ace components

What's in your stable? A bay Thoroughbred and the cutest grey pony you ever saw! Oh, you mean my GARAGE?! A Cannondale Cadd 9 with Dura Ace components! (AS SOON AS MY FRAME EVER COMES IN!!! )
Also, a Burely Rivazza tandem.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Over 40 down "killer hill" between La Jolla and Carlsbad on a tandem. (Had to go up that hill first though!) Tandems go faster down hill because they have more weight pushing ... but UP hill is another story!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I have one somewhere of DH and I with the tandem, but I can't find it on the new photo program? :(

Most memorable moment on my bike: Which one, which one?!! I guess the coastal ride from Carlsbad to La Jolla and back, including "killer hill". 52 miles. My longest so far. Those last 10 miles were KILLER!!!

Most fun ever had on a bike? The group ride we went on yesterday (Memorial Day) down the bike trail to the beach and back (48 miles). There were 7 of us including our Pastor. We go to a very big church and it's the first time DH and I have ever done anything "social" with him, so it was pretty cool. We got to tease him mercilessly about is ancient bike that literally had cobwebs on it! Three of us are worship leaders, including myself, so we sang a couple worship songs in three part harmony. It was sweet. ;)

Real name: Emily

Where do you live? Madison, WI

Explanation of your handle: My first AD&D character was named Torrilin. I love the name and use it as a handle for most online forums

Explanation of your avatar: Don't have one yet

Age (general or specific) not quite 30. Can I be 30 now? Please? Now?

Occupation: homemaker. full time atm, will eventually find a paying job and go back to part time

Favorite bike: K2 Zed 1.0 (also only bike)

What's in your stable? See above.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Probably around 35 mph down Mt Alem (the mountain designation is overkill, it's a pretty typical hill for central PA). And well, the when is any time I went down it (mostly trips to the library or my HS job). Even on my 45 lb HS clunker, it was not hard to break 30mph on that hill. It rejoiced in a fairly stiff S curve, including one that it wasn't safe to take faster than 35mph in any vehicle going down. Fairly narrow lanes, some memorably bad drainage grates with 6" drops/rises extending just inside the lane. Shoulder only on one side, as the curves were cut into the hill to reduce the grade. Fairly steep ravine on the side with the shoulder. Extensive tree coverage, so after a storm you might have 2-6" diameter branches on the road.

Yes, that means going back *up* was another thing entirely. No wonder I'm fond of mountain bikes for road use *g*.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Don't have a picture of me on my bike. No camera!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Same hill, I have a love/hate relationship with it. There were few rides on it that weren't memorable.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Most rides are pretty fun :). I don't think I've ever quite hit the most fun I can imagine... being able to ride up one of the Appalachians with no walking would be awesome. Up til now I think the best I've done is over halfway on a major climb.

Other stuff: I've got some minor and not very visible physical disabilities that make biking and swimming two of the few sports I can do. This means plenty of experience with pain meds and orthotics. I lived in LA for two years car free and loved it. So now I'm trying to keep the happiness going in Madison.

Real name: Andrea
Where do you live? Worcester, MA

Explanation of your handle: Basically I just thought it sounded cool and was something different from the handle I use on some other forums (which is Angie O'Plasty), and plus it fits because I have a lot of energy!

Explanation of your avatar: Just a picture of my bike after a grocery run.

Age (general or specific) 23

Occupation: Grad student in nursing (nurse practitioner program); just landed a job for the summer/per diem during school as a nursing assistant on a telemetry floor at the local hospital. This is ideal since I am interested in specializing in cardiology.

Favorite bike: Don't really have a favorite.

What's in your stable? Giant Nutra (hybrid), mid '90s (it's in my avatar)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? According to a guy on last night's AMC group ride, 32.9 going down a long hill in Holden, MA.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Attached is a picture of me in an AMC hiking group on Mt. Jefferson in NH. I'm the one in the shocking pink with the yellow backpack (nice color combo, I know).

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: This is an amusing one: When I was probably about 8 or 9, I accidentally knocked a candle holder off the mantle and broke the candle (don't remember how, probably playing ball or some such shenanigans). I then tried to blame this on my younger sister, who is 6 years younger than I. When my parents asked how she did it, I went into great detail (with demonstrations) about how she supposedly put one of the kid-size chairs up on the raised hearth, climbed onto the chair, stood up and knocked the candle off. Needless to say, my story failed to convince them and I got in trouble--for the lie, not for the breakage.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Going on my first group ride and keeping up with the group without a problem--I thought for sure I'd be the one getting left in the dust. I haven't been riding very long so I haven't come up with any really good memorable moments yet!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Probably just exploring different places.

Explanation of your handle: My mom gave it to me.

Explanation of your avatar: Just me

Age (general or specific) 45

Occupation: Starving Artist :o At this point, it's more like a full time hobby than an occupation

Favorite bike: Trek 1500 WSD - Ice Blue

What's in your stable? Trek 1500 and Trek 820 MountainTrack MTB

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I live in the kettle moraine in southeast Wisconsin. There are a lot of big hills and valleys. My fastest speed so far is 33 mph down one of the hills on HWY E in Walworth County near Eagle Spring Lake.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Don't have a picture of me on my bike. It's hard to find pictures of me because i do all the picture taking :p

Most memorable moment on my bike: I was biking in Hilton Head, SC on a really really hot day and it started pouring rain in buckets. I was completely soaked in no time but i just kept riding cuz it was the warmest rain I ever felt. I was purposely riding through every giant puddle and loving it - I felt like i was about 10 years old again! That's the great thing about biking - it always makes you feel younger than you are.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I think the most fun rides i have are the very first ones outside after a long winter of riding in the basement on my trainer staring at the walls. There's nothing more fun than pedaling and actually MOVING!!:D

Occupation: Homeschool mom / editor for writer hubby

Favorite bike: Love the one I've got! (Would hate to ruin the relationship by lusting after anything else.)

What's in your stable? Giant OCR Limited Composite 2005

Fastest speed on a road bike: 38.5 down a hill outside tiny Carthage, Indiana -- yee-ha!!!!

Another picture of yourself or your ride: Hate the whole picture thing. Perhaps the bike will acquiesce someday.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told? "I'm okay." (In response to DH's, "How ya doin'?" -- which he invariably asks after about 20 miles into a grueling headwind.)

Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding in a late-summer hailstorm. OUCH!

Most memorable off-bike moment: Serving as the personal support vehicle for DH as he completed RAIN Ride, a one-day, one-way, 160-mile ride across Indiana. (Looked like so much fun at the time, I vowed to ride this year. What was I thinking?!)

Most fun ever had on a bike: Laughing outloud at the sheer joy and exhilaration that accompanies being on the open road.

06-04-2007, 01:03 PM
Real name: Teresa

Where do you live? Los Angeles

Explanation of your handle: I have a bipolar (more popularly known as manic-depressive) mood disorder with rapid-cycling features (meaning that my extremes shift more often than is standard for the illness). Golly, how I wish my handle were in reference to a higher-than-average sustainable cadence! The reason I use it here is not just because it's a neat double entendre but because cycling helps me cope with my volatile gear ratio, lifting me when I'm down and sucking up all that excess energy when I'm pretty certain I can fly.

Explanation of your avatar: I was looking for an image of my first bike, a yellow Sears girls' bicycle with a flowered banana seat, and came across this pic. The joy on the kid's face says everything that needs be said about the heart of cycling.

Age (general or specific): 39 and holding

Occupation: Copy editor

Favorite bike: My new steed, an Orbea Onix TdF

What's in your stable? The aforementioned, plus a Gary Fisher Tassajara hardtail

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Does downhill count? In which case, 35, whilst descending Stony Peak in Chatsworth, Calif.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? How about both!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Not sure, but it's undoubtedly something I told myself

Most memorable moment on my bike: Feeling absolutely bonked out on a rest stop on my local MUT when a woman on a Townie came noodling by singing "Here Comes the Sun." I got back on the bike, smiling, and my batteries felt totally recharged. It was a case of sheer emotional drafting.

Most fun ever had on a bike? My test ride of my current bike, when I finally discovered what it feels like to ride a road bike that fits. That's the day I grew wheels.

What's in your stable? Giant TCR C2, Kona Fire Mountain

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Hmmm... I'm too new to road biking to know, but I went 36.8 MPH down the World's Most Dangerous Road (in Bolivia) last December. It was a blast and a half. I usually get up to 35MPH on my daily commute (mountain bike again)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Don't have one handy.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'd have to make up something good and I'm just not that good at it...

Most memorable moment on my bike: Probably the World's Most Dangerous Road. (see www.gravitybolivia.com );that was really a great time. It wasn't *my* bike though.

Most fun ever had on a bike? That's a tough one, I have a lot of fun on my bike regularly. I have a ride that I just love though, I commute every day and a lot of the ride is on a great set of trails so when I get home I am muddy and have completely forgotten that I've just come from work. The first time I did that ride might qualify because it was my first bike commute and such a contrast to the congested freeway I used to drive. Though some of the rest of you have given me ideas for how to have more fun...:D

Well, not that fast down the whole thing. :) My top speed was on the paved part at the top, but I went pretty fast on most of it, it wasn't that dangerous except around blind turns or when a truck or bus passed. It was unnerving to have to ride on the left (cliff) side but not as scary as I thought.

Not sure. I almost hit a deer once...rather, the deer almost hit me. That's memorable

Most fun ever had on a bike?
Riding in real hills. I live in central IL. Overpasses are my hills. We go up to Bayfield WI every year and they have real hills, hard to go up, scary to come down. I can't say that was most fun, but it's fun.

Can I change the bike I wished I own?

Yeah I can. I think a Bianchi would look nice in my living room. Maybe an Eros Donna? Or an Elle? I prefer the grips for Shimano shifters and Ultegra mmm. mmm Ultegra. But am addicted to steel. Oh what do I know.

Most memorable moment on my bike aka How I Got a Free Mountian Bike :D : When I first moved to Oakland, CA I had the battery in my car stolen 3 times in less then a week. I got a chain lock and secured the hood well. After a while I thought maybe someone was breaking into my car so I devised an alarm system...temple bell on the driver side window handle and diet coke cans along the passanger side door. One night my partner shakes me awake and tells me someone is breaking into the car, she heard the bell. I'm like no, its ok. Then I hear cans falling. I jump up and look out the window. At first I can't see any but my partner is on the phone with 911 and she can see them. Finally I see some guy with his legs hanging out my driver side door. I run out my apartment, down the stairs and I fly out the front of the building shouting 'Hey, thats my car!". Turns out it was 3 young men about 14-16 years old. I think I scared the beegeebees out of them...some crazy white chic in boxers and a tee, no shoes, hair going every which way. Anyway they run off all three trying to jump on one bike. I go down the steps to survey the damage....I see a mountain bike laying down in front of my car. I pick it up and put it on the steps. One of the kids comes running back, asking me really nice for his bike back. I let him know all he has to do is wait for the cops. Off in the distance we can hear the sirens, he runs off without his bike. I thought the cops would want it to get finger prints off. They were not interested and told me to keep it. I road it around town for a number of years. It was my first mountian bike. Not a bad deal when its free. :)

Most fun ever had on a bike? Taking the Road I class. It was the first time I've ridden in a group. It was a Women's class and was very empowering and full of information.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Hmmm, probably that I was involved in lots of sports in high school. I moved to a new school and wanted to be "in", so I fibbed. I reported that I was a great basketball and volleyball starter. HA!! What a lie!

Most memorable moment on my bike: The first time I rode 40 miles.

Most fun ever had on a bike? That same trip. Everything about it was fun. I rode to a neighboring city on Mother's Day and showed up at my mom's door. My husband and kids picked me up after I had a shower and changed and took me out to dinner! Now that's a mother's day!!!

Hi ladies,

I came across this forum while browsing the Internet for some random bike-related thing (I've spent so much time browsing here, I forgot what I was looking for!), and knew I needed to join.

I have only recently gotten back on a bike of any sort (before that I hadn't ridden a bike in over 15 years!), so I'm definitely very, very new to all of this. That, added to the fact that I don't really know any other women who ride, makes this forum truly a blessing. Now I have a resource for all those questions the BF can't answer!

I look forward to getting to know you!

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I wish I had a computer, but not as of yet. I'm guessing about 35, Ironman Day, July 22nd. I was riding to town to watch the marathon leg and came down this ginormous hill toward the ski jumps pedaling my heart out. Just as I neared the bottom, two Adirondack Trailways tour buses went flying by at about 60 and the wind almost knocked me right off the road. It was terrifying.

Oh also there are these radar speed thingies at the outskirts of every village along the High Peaks scenic byway in the Adirondacks so cars know to slow down. My last sprint triathlon I rolled into town on an uphill at 25 mph! I was so excited to see that I was going that fast. I really need to get a computer I think.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Haha I missed this question! Biggest lie I've ever told? Regarding biking? Well, it was mostly an accident. I was all excited having thought I'd done the entire Ironman loop (see below) and I told a bunch of people I'd done it but realized I'd missed the part where they go down this one road and it's a massive, massive hill in one direction. Then they come back the other way. As if there aren't enough hills already on that loop!

Most memorable moment on my bike:
Completing my first 56 mile Ironman loop just two weeks after getting my road bike. I was near tears and I called my bike racing uncle. :o

Most fun ever had on a bike?
Hahaha skid contests as a kid?
These days it's catching air off jumps at the mountain bike center in town :D

LOL

I'm sorry, I didn't see this till now...

It's from Deep Space Nine, Major Kira... I was playing an online startrek game and had to give a name and I ended up with me-kira (meaning I am Kira) and then I started using it for yahoo mail and then on forums :D

And yes I remember TOS on tv when I was a kid... I was fascinated. ;)

I followed most of the series except Enterprise and my favorite of all the series is DSN :)

I love DS9!!! I too did not get into Enterprise. I love surprising all my friends with my Star Trek knowledge. :D

Well, that was my Mom's era... and I can't help but laugh at some of those classic episodes. Are you trying to argue that Jean-Luc Picard wasn't a real captain? I mean sure he didn't mack on the ladies half as often but does that really make him less manly? :p

Real name: Joyce

Where do you live? Kansas (it's not all flat!)

Explanation of your handle: None needed

Age (general or specific) over 50

Occupation: accountant, wife, mom

Favorite bike: Cannondale hybrid

What's in your stable? Only one and I use it for everything.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Huge Kansas tailwind and I wasn't trying to break a record so I wasn't peddling....43 mph downhill coming into Council Grove, Kansas in July 2003.

Most fun I've ever had on my bike: 45 MPH South Tailwind pushing me North--through the Flint Hills of Kansas. Several times that day I rode the fun hills for 2 plus miles without peddling!! :D

Rail Trails I've cycled: C&O Canal Path (Cumberland, Maryland to Washington, DC...loved the PawPaw Tunnel), Virginia Creeper Trail (Damascus, VA...downhill all the way), Prairie Spirit Trail (Ottawa, KS to Welda, KS), Elroy-Sparta, Great River, La Crosse River, and 400 Trails in Wisconsin with my son bike-camping (the people of Norwalk are wonderful!), Paseo del Bosque Trail (16 miles in Albuequerque, NM), Orange County Bike Trail near Orlando, FL, Delaware River Tow Path in Pennsylvania and Delaware and Raritan Canal Tow Path in New Jersery.

Usual rides: My husband loves to fish, so many times I'll ride to where he's fishing OR he fishes in lakes near the route I'm riding.

Biggest Accomplishment on a Bike: Completed 5 centuries in one year. The best one was 115 miles from my driveway to a small town motel with a whirlpool!!! (My husband fished in 3 different lakes that day!)

Any state tours or organized rides: Santa Fe Trail Ride (Santa Fe, NM to Independence, KS)-I rode only 4 days of 21; Bike Across Kansas (BAK), Cycle Across Missouri Parks (CAMP), Touring Ride in Rurual Indiana-September Escapade (TRIRI).

Where do you live? western Wisconsin

Explanation of your handle: I love my Look bike and I didn't find any others on my search of the forum. I'm not ususally one of those people who prefaces every statement with "look,..." or even "like..."

Explanation of your avatar: It took me all summer to register here, do I have to spend the time coming up with an avatar too?!

Age (general or specific) mid 40's

Occupation: SAHM, educating my children, retired from corporate life

Favorite bike: the one I'm riding -- a Look 555. When I test rode it at my LBS I had to tell him "I feel one with the bike." So I had to buy it.

What's in your stable? a 20yo Trek 400. It served me well so I can't part with it, but I can't bear to ride it either. I also borrow my DH's Electra Amsterdam to ride around the neighborhood with my little girls.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 31-32 mph, pedaling the flats after our many little hills

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'll have to take the time to add that someday

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I told my husband that after I quit work of course our house would stay picked up and clean!

Most memorable moment on my bike: It's not a moment, it's a recurring moment. It's the pure joy I feel riding through this lovely countryside, birds and frogs singing to me, when I hit the perfect gear for the grade, just going all out. That gets me up at 5 am.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I think I already answered this above in the memorable question. I'm just really proud of what I've been able to do this year when I thought it was all over for me!

A year and a half ago I couldn't walk for 20 minutes or climb stairs without pain due to osteoarthritis and 40 extra pounds. I started working out and journaling my food intake and of course the weight started coming off. Just as I hit the dreaded weight loss plateau, a friend got me to a spinning class. 6 months later my DH decided I needed a bike. So I went from not riding in over 12 years to a metric century in 2 1/2 months. Happy happy!

By the way, I also have fond memories of TOS, with my dad, who wouldn't miss a week! Now you know how old I am!

Thanks for all the learning here!

2.Jean-Luc Who???

Explanation of your avatar: Cute yet demented

Age: 38

Occupation: Environmental Scientist

Favorite bike: The bike I am riding!

What's in your stable? I currently ride my Specialized S-Works Roubaix. I also have a Co-Motion Nor'Wester for touring. For mountain biking I have an old Trek Fuel 90.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I am not sure...my bike computer is temperamental, and I have given up on it. But I do remember one year going downhill at the Tour de Goatneck at 40 mph.

Usual rides: Local rallies. During the summertime, the DFW area has one about every weekend.

Biggest Accomplishment on a Bike: I am pretty wimpy...I usually only do 1 century a year (Hotter 'n Hell). I mostly just ride 100Ks. This year I did the MS 150...so I guess that is my biggest accomplishment so far.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I tell them to myself all the time when I am on bike rides. When I start to feel miserable...I sing the James Brown song "I Feel Good" to myself!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Bonking the first summer I started road riding. I did my first 100K on my mountain bike in 100 degree weather. It was not pretty...

Most fun ever had on a bike? Coming in long before my ex-fiance at last year's Hotter 'n Hell. I am generally not competitive with others...only with myself. But he ragged on me for years about being slow and wimpy. Then last year when the heat index reached 111...he ended up cramped up underneath a MASH tent, and I finished without needing any medical attention. He is the hare, I am the tortoise. Enough said.;)

Hi Cheryl

We live in South Auckland so within 10 minutes are out of the urban sprawl and out towards Clevedon, fab bike riding (apart from the hills in Hunua !) Auckland drivers have to be the worse in the world, every ride there are always near misses :( Haven't mountain bike at Woodhills, I hear it fab but gets really crowded at the weekends...... we tend to head out to rotorua for the weekend when we want to go off road ..... There's now a new track at Pukekohe next time you are over :)

Yep, did the Special K tri series, that how I got into cycling, still do the tri series but also do the longer distances. Aiming for the Lake Taupo Classic this year and the Northland Classic in March next year..... Very much bitten by the cycling bug, even given up riding horses now !

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Most common lie: "Yes, Mom, I am fine." -- No matter how sick, hurt, or sad I am.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, it's not a happy memory but not one that I will ever forget. On June 1, 2007, I was biking north, and I saw a brown sedan coming south on the same road. It then took a left turn into me and my bike. I was Superwoman as I flew into her windshield and hit the pavement. Thankfully, nothing is broken but the 2007 Trek Pilot 5.0 that I had bought in April. My joints are all suffering from deep bruising, but that will eventually subside.

Most memorable moment on my bike: My first day using clipless pedals I was so scared and nervous that I couldn't stop at a stop sign because I couldn't 'find' my brakes. Nearly got creamed. Luckily the person driving was aware that I was a newbie (probably was pretty obvious) and didn't hit me and smiled and waved when I apologized profusely.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "Really, I'm fine."

Most memorable moment on my bike: I rented a bike while on vacation this summer to make sure that I enjoyed it before spending money and buying one. I was biking along in the bike lane when a guy in an Escalade pulled over and stopped in the bike lane (not on the shoulder) ahead of me and put his flashers on. I slowed down and kept an eye on him, his windows were down, car still stopped, flashers still on, just to be safe I called out "on your left" as I passed him, he didn't look, put his car into gear and pulled back onto the highway and into me. Thankfully he stopped when he heard me yelling and realized what he did. He didn't apologize or ask if I was ok, just waited for me to get up and pick up the bike, then pulled away. I was fine, although I had some lovely bruises to show off at the beach the next day and a few choice words for the driver.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Still to come.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: My biggest bike lie was one I told myself: I'll start right off with clipless pedals and cleats. That won't be a problem for me at all! (yeah....right....you probably read about the LBS crotch grab incident)

Most memorable moment on my bike: It was that feeling of pure freedom and exhilaration the very first time you pedal off on a bike, wobbly or not. It's a sense that's hard to describe and you had no idea it would feel that good.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Looking at my Garmin Edge 305 after my first (and only so far) 27 mile nonstop ride and seeing that it estimated that I burned 1622 calories! I had no idea this was such a perfect form of exercise. I just wanted to learn to ride!

Most fun ever had on a bike? See above!

Hi Thalia, I work in Glendale. Maybe when the weather cools down, we could get together for a ride and I can help you with your gears. Sometimes, after work I go to the Rose Bowl and do loops and some of the hills. With this weather though, I haven't been there in several weeks.

Thalia the muse
08-30-2007, 11:36 AM
Nina, I would LOVE that! I have been dismayed to realize that Glendale has not one inch of bike path, bike lane, or even bike route to ride. And everyone seems to drive a ginormous SUV while talking on a cel phone, so it's been a little intimidating.

The weather has been absolutely horrible, hasn't it? I wanted to go out after work yesterday, and it was still around 95F at 6 p.m.

Ninabike
08-30-2007, 11:41 AM
You're absolutly right about no place to ride in Glendale. That's why the Rose Bowl is a good place for getting used to your bike. Zoo drive around Griffith Park is Okay too, but the cars do like to speed along that route. Right now with this weather, unless you go out at 6:00 A.M., riding is just about impossible!!

Explanation of your avatar: My husband and I moved to NM from Seattle a few years ago, and we miss the water, but now we say we live beneath "cielo del mar" : ocean in the sky, and this is why! And I am in love with the sky in NewMexico, it is always stunning. One of my sky pics that turned out.

Age: 36 in November

Occupation: dental hygienist

Favorite bike: don't know that one yet

What's in your stable? Trek 5500, not mine, keeping it for a friend who is away for a year or two, and I modified it for my own use.

Fastest speed on a road bike? Well, I started cycling less than a month ago and I am afraid of going too fast down the many hills here, probably not more than 30mph coming down EmoryPass a couple weeks ago. I was last coming down the hill, it was scary seeing people a mile ahead of me, how fast they were.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? haven't figured out how to do that, I'm doing really well just cutting and pasting and rewriting this page, I'm very proud of myself for this!:o

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: not one I'll repeat

Most memorable moment on my bike: I haven't been riding long enough to have an extraordinary memory, but I am pretty happy whenver I am out there. If (WHEN!) I complete the EnchantedCircle Century ride this Saturday in RedRiver, that will be very memorable I'm sure. I am very excited and very nervous about this ride!:(

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when?: Approximately 28 miles per hour, I'd guess. Going down a large bridge-hill on the Silver Comet Trail.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Can't remember...

Most memorable moment on my bike: I'm going to have to copy Thalia here... Getting back on one for the first time in several years and realizing that yes -- it's STILL FUN! I feel like a kid again, even though I would never had pushed my body like this when I was younger!

Most memorable moment on my bike: .... finishing my first 100k- the Dairyland Dare

Cough...cough....you picked the Dairyland Dare for your first 100K? Oh my, you are courageous or was that why it became memorable? Last year when the weather was nice? Or this year when they added heat to the challenge?

I stand in awe! After finishing the Door County Century this year, both DH and I decided that the 100 miles at DCC was much, much easier than the 100K at the Dairyland Dare.

Beane
09-16-2007, 06:53 AM
welll, last year my now husband (sorry, still getting used to it...) did the 200k and of course said that I could "easily" do the 100k but just to take it as slow as necessary. He's always saying things like that (oh, that hill isn't much at all, c'mon!) and then I find out that despite a few years of riding together, he still has no idea what my idea of a challenge is... Anyway, I signed up pretty early in the year, figuring that with training I could do it. We got married this summer in Rhode Island, so we spent about 10 days there before the wedding and then a week on honeymoon after. Well, RI is flatter than WI (my parents live on an island there, which is super flat) so between that and wedding prep, we didn't do much training there. Then no biking on the honeymoon. We returned to RI, drove for two days to WI, and then the next day was the Dare  . I ALMOST didn't do it but DH convinced me. I made it, slowly, but have been bitten by the organized ride bug, and I'm hoping to actually train and do the 200k next year.

when is the door county century?

Wow...you've got some good legs a-building if you did it under those circumstances. I'm awed. That's an agressive ride, but the beauty of the countryside overcomes the steepness of the hills.

This year we went out for the Quadrupedal in May. Same ride organizer, so the same great support and same sadistic use of the terrain, but on a completely different route...and, of course, supporting Iowa County's no-kill shelter makes it a perfect ride.

The Door County Century was last weekend (weekend after Labor Day). It has been going for more than 25 years. It is the major fundraiser for the school district so the kids are involved as well as the PTA--they do a great job. It is flat. Half the vertical climb of the 100K Dairyland Dare (based on my GPS) and an extra 40 miles to do it in. Not so much a challenge as just a fun weekend.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Don't know. DH has the computer on his bike...I'll have to test that. But, don't imagine its much. I'm still having trouble being on a bike for more than about 15 mi.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Don't have any...I'll have to correct that as well. :o

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Hmmm...that I was single when I wasn't. That was during my last marriage. 3rd time is DEFINITELY a charm. ;)

Most memorable moment on my bike: Again, I'm so new that I don't really have any to speak of except the look on non-riders faces when I say I ride about 10-12 mi 3-4 times a week. They are so easily impressed.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding with my DH. He's very fit and wanted to find an exercise we could do together (didn't I mention 3rd time was a charm). We're having fun tooling around town but are trying to find better, less trafficked routes to enjoy.

Hi RedRhodie - being new I never thought to check out the "getting to know you section". I would love to ride in Newport sometime - Mostly I ride in Jamestown - I like the Beavertail loop, and I also like to go to to the train station and do the South Kingstown bike trail. I am not sure of your level of riding - I have not been riding as much as I should have, and I wouldn't want to drag you down. I would also like to try the Blackstone trail.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told:
When I was in sixth grade, at a sleepover with my girlfriends, I told a long and elaborate story about sitting next to Tom Jones (yes, the Welshman...hey I was 12) on a x country plane trip. I really think they believed me.

Most memorable moment on my bike:
For some reason I always think about a summer I spent at home (in Newton MA) after my freshman year in college. I would bike over to the cemetary and ride the paths as if it were a steeplchase and all the bumps and cracks were jumps. It was pretty cool. I did it most every evening.

Most fun ever had on a bike?
Once I did a tour of Wales and I was riding in Pembrokeshire. One day it happened that Tom Jones was driving by the group on a remote road and he recognized me....

Explanation of your handle: I've had this user name on many forums for years. It's from the feminist datebook We'Moon.

Explanation of your avatar: It's me at the first Duathlon that I competed in.

Age (general or specific) 30

Occupation: Student, will graduate with a degree in Social Work

Favorite bike: I want a tri bike. I really don't know what brand or anything because it is beyond my financial reach right now... but someday I'll have one!

What's in your stable? 2006 Specialized Vita

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I honestly don't know. I'm fairly new to biking and am getting a bike computer for myself for the holidays

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Just my avatar!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I don't know really... I haven't lied in a really long time because I'm a horrible liar and it makes me feel really yucky!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Competing in my first event

Most fun ever had on a bike? I would have to say my first ride on it would have been the most fun so far. It was just so exciting to own this really cool bike and to be training for a specific purpose.

Real name: Valerie

Where do you live: Eugene, OR

Explanation of your handle: An old nickname from working in kitchens. I was notorious for getting rowdy and er... bruising people up on occasion :o Someone decided to come up with pirate names for the crew, and this is the one I was given. It's stuck ever since.

Explanation of your avatar: My hair, when it gets longer, turns into little-kid pigtails.

Age (general or specific): mid-twenties

Occupation: Inventory supervisor for a bookstore

Favorite bike: I'm in love with the Bianchi Virata and anything by Vanilla!

What's in your stable: Rosie, a K2 road bike; an old Univega (current project bike); Madelaine, an even older JC Penney 3-speed women's touring bike (more like a cruiser); and Addie, my Specialized Seattle Langster.

Fastest speed on a road bike: Downhill around 40 mph. I was lagging behind my bf and his friend on a chip-seal descent and was too afraid to look @ the computer  It was also my longest ride and tallest climb at the time :D

Another picture of yourself or your ride: We never bring cameras, for some reason...

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Oh my goodness- I've got plenty of childhood/teenaged lies, like those told in school and to parents. And then there are the things never said, which don't quite count as lies, right  ? I also said the love thing to someone I didn't intend to... that was brutal.

Most memorable moment on my bike: My first "big" ride. After riding 20-milers on the bike path all summer, I opted into an 40 ml ride out on a country road (w/ 2 guys in much better shape- I got dropped a few times :o ). I didn't make it the entire route and we had to turn back early, but I had never felt equally so proud and exhausted in my life. That was the moment I learned about proper nutrition for biking

Most fun ever had on a bike: The first time my SO and I got to go out on his new road bike. His college roommate had been big into cycling (captain of the college team, local-team rider, nationals, semi-pro team, etc) and thus he hated the thought of riding a bike for pleasure. After boo-hooing about how 'lame and excessive' it was, he saw how much I loved to ride and got his own road bike. He's hooked (even raced his first race this last season)! I was, and still, so glad that we would be able to share something that important and awesome together.

ok, I've posted here a bit and still haven't done this, so here goes:

Real name: Ellen

Where do you live? Cape Cod, MA

Explanation of your handle: TriMom is always taken on every site I've tried to use it so I just added a few numbers. They happen to be my birthday (2-17) and I used to tease my kids about never forgetting Mom's birthday now.

Explanation of your avatar: It's a club design for the North Shore Cyclopaths, a group my husband and I ride with in the summer.

Age (general or specific) 2.17.63. Aging up next season!

Occupation: teacher

Favorite bike: right now it's my new road bike.

What's in your stable? 2008 Specialized Ruby, 2004 Quintana Roo Caliente (tri), and a 2002 Specialized Hard Rock.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? This past October I hit 45 MPH on a descent while riding the Great River Ride (http://newhorizonsbikes.com/page.cfm?PageID=161) in Westfield, MA. It was one of the scariest things I have ever done. In the metric century there was over 11K feet of climbing, so there was a lot of descending too.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? will have to look for one.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: not gonna touch this one!

Most memorable moment on my bike: It was during the Tri State Seacoast Century this past September. At about the 50 mile mark I got out of the saddle to climb up a small hill, and I mean real small. I was ready to blast up it when BOTH quads locked up with cramps like I have never felt before. I was clipped in and could not move either leg. My husband and a friend were right in front of me, I was in the middle of the road, and there were other riders and cars behind me. I yelled "I'm going down" because I didn't want anyone to crash into me, but I couldn't even go over on my side.

My husband had to unclip me and drag me over to the side of the road. Some kind neighbors ran and got me some ice, while another rider gave me her electrolytes. My husband kneaded and iced both quads for over 30 minutes before I could get up. Then we went and rode another 50 miles :D

Traditionally one's kunya is Umm or Abu then the name of the first born son although more modern thinking folks use the name of the first born child whether male or female. Both my kids names begin with the better B so I'm UmmBnB.

Explanation of your avatar: I have issues with organized religion :D

Age (general or specific) 38

Occupation: HR Director for a large non-profit

Favorite bike: The one I'm currently riding wrt comfort - K2 T-9 Twister. My last bike was a Bridgestone RB-3. I had no idea how good that bike was and its long gone.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I'm sure I had some fast decents years ago but don't recall them. Two weeks ago I hit 38mph coming out of Golden heading back to Denver.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't have a single pic!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: HA HA HA....ya right!

Most memorable moment on my bike: I used to ride RAGBRAI each year. It was soo much fun and the memories are fabulous, each and every one!

12-16-2007, 08:56 PM
Real name: Jennifer Sage
Where do you live? Vail, Colorado (where there is lots of snow at the moment)

Explanation of your handle: A nickname given to me when I moved to Vail after quitting a high paying corporate job to become a ski bum 14 years ago! And it signifies my outlook on life - life's too short not to enjoy it to the max and have a great time! But rest-assured, I DO share some of the fun, In fact, helping others have fun is part of my job! :)

Explanation of your avatar: Not sure if it shows up, because it shows up as a picture under My Current Avatar, but it also said upload failed (even though the pic was only 12 kb). And I can't see it here on the preview page. But, it is a photo from the caravan at the Tour de France, of my favorite "vehicle" - the pink FUNHOG! I go to the Tour every year, and this year it was very disappointing....because the Funhog wasn't there! :( (Note, we had a blast at the Tour this year, even though there were many disappointments among the riders. But hey, look where we were and look at the rides we did up some of the biggest cols in the Alpes! Who can be bummed about that?)

Age (general or specific): 46

Occupation: Personal Trainer, fitness consultant, Master Instructor for Spinning, distributor customized vitamins, motivational speaker, and owner of a Bicycle Tour Company! www.vivatravels.com

Favorite bike: Have a 6-yr old Serotta which I can't wait to get rid of, just bought a used Orbea which will hold me over until I can get a custom designed bicycle - I am still researching which one I want.

What's in your stable? Along with the Serotta (the Orbea is in San Francisco waiting to be sent to me) I have a Trek Fuel mountain bike.

Fastest speed on a road bike? Many many years ago with a fully loaded touring bike with front and back panniers, screaming downhill on a wide road at 65 kph in New Zealand! It's awfully stable with front and back panniers. Nowadays, no desire to go that fast

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Just the occasional white lie...

Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding around Europe self-supported solo in 1988 for 2 months. 2,500 miles. I would not do now what I did then (at least a woman riding solo). Back then, I never once feared for my safety or worried about anything getting ripped off. Did the same thing for a month in New Zealand in 1991, for 1,500 miles.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Climbing Alpe d'Huez. Ok, so it hurt, but it was fun afterwards!

I am eager to meet you guys online! I have been lurking for awhile but thought it was time to introduce myself. Cycling is my favorite thing in the whole world, and in fact, I want to do it all over the whole world! And take others there to do it with me!!

I am very active on two indoor cycling forums, www.pedal-on.com and www.innercycling.com. Same moniker, same avatar. I think I learned about this originally from someone on one of those sites.

Where do you live? Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada

Explanation of your handle: Nickname given me by cycling partner after she didn’t hear my yells when I crashed and she disappeared down the next hill so she could build up momentum for the next climb.

Explanation of your avatar: I’m working on it.

Age (general or specific) 40ish

Occupation: Mom returning to the job market

Favorite bike: One that doesn’t break – see below.

What's in your stable? Norco Tri – A touchy roadie, Phoenix Buzzard (for towing the kid and touring)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I do like to go fast downhill, but don’t have a computer on my roadbike.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Again – working on it.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I try not to.

Most memorable moment on my bike: My first and only race so far was a Tri – a – Tri (mini triathalon). After a miserable swim – my wetsuit was too small, I hopped on my bike and was climbing a hill just after the turnaround point and my chain broke. I had to ride my bike like a scooter back to the transition area where I was ready to pack it in but sucked it up and trotted the run distance to finish dead last – but I finished.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Cycling along the Oregon Coast, you can hear and smell the sealions before you see them.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: No, mom, I've never fallen off my bike!

Most memorable moment on my bike: My first tri, back when I thought that I liked running better than cycling. I got on the bike after the swim, dead last in the women's division, and passed enough people to come in 5th in my age group.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Every time I round the bend down the Torrey Pines hill and see the ocean stretched out in front of me... after growing up in a land-locked state (NM), that's about as good as it gets!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2279/2038795635_f2f5636dda_o.jpg

Most memorable moment on my bike: I was supposed to meet a friend for a ride and they bailed at the last minute. I headed north on the coast on my fixed gear and stopped in San Clemente at a 7-11 to refuel. Next thing I know there is a group of riders coming in from the north. They were on a century, headed south to San Diego and Brandy was among them. I made the wise decision to turn around and ride south with them, Brandy and I hit it off and the rest is history. The picture above is from the day that we met.

Most fun I've ever had on my bike: First time I rode my fixed gear. Fun, but scary!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding the old rusty borrowed beach bike around St. Simons, GA, with my buddy Paula. Always to somewhere to get a beer, and not a hill on the entire island! (See pic above).

Hello everyone!

I just joined the Team Estrogen site today.:D

Real name: Lynn

Where do you live? Delray Beach, FL

Explanation of your handle: I own 3 bikes and I'm a freelance writer that sometimes writes about biking. I just started a biking blog and was trying to figure out what to call it. I was thinking of Nerds on Wheels or Bike Goddess or Bike Diva. The person hosting my site liked Bike Diva the best so that's what stuck.

Explanation of your avatar: That's me riding in the 2006 Intracoastal Century Ride as a member of the TNT (Team in Training) cycle team. TNT is the largest fundraising program for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Age: 44

Occupation:Freelance writer

Favorite bike: The one that is on order. A 2008 Trek Madone 6.5 WSD. This is a top of the line road bike that only weighs 14.1 pounds!!! Way more bike than I'll know what to do with.

What's in your stable?
I currently own three bikes. A Hawaiian themed Nirve beach cruiser - 3 speeds, coaster brakes and weighs 10 TONS.
A Cannondale full suspension mountain bike - can't remember what model
My baby a Cannondale Synapse 2 carbon road bike that weighs 17 pounds.

Fastest speed on a road bike? 38 MPH going downhill in Clermont, Florida August 2007. Clermont is known as the Florida "alps" - yes there are actually hills in Florida. Sugarloaf Mountain is a 12% grade and steeper than any hills we saw when riding in Tucson, Arizona.:eek:

My fastest speed on the flatlands of Florida - 30.1 MPH while doing a sprint along A1A just a few days ago. SWEET!!!!! My normal speed is in the 18-21 MPH range. Must have had a tail wind pushing me to be able to go that fast.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? If you visit my Bike Diva (http://www.bikediva.net) blog you'll see tons of pictures of me biking all over the freakin' place.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Telling guys that I'm not a very good road biker. Then watching their chins drop to the ground as I hammer past them going up a hill. Life is good.

Most memorable moment on my bike: November 17, 2007. Riding in the 25th annual El Tour de Tucson in Tucson, Arizona. My husband and I were the mentors for our local S. Florida TNT cycle team. We helped train the other team members, many of whom had never been on a road bike, to complete this 109 mile event.

9,000 bikers were at this event. The route included 2 dry river bed crossings where you had to get off your bike and carry it 1/2 mile through dusty/sand filled with rocks and small boulders. There was a Mariachi Band at the end of the first river bed crossing - AWESOME!!! Although our time wasn't very fast, my husband and I still got silver medals - YEAH!!!!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding in the woods on my mountain bike during a rain storm/flood. Talk about a MUD bath, but it was FUN!

Currently training for?: Our local MS150 ride. A 2 day, 150 mile road bike ride to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society which takes place on May 3/4, 2008. My husband and I joined the Office Depot Foundation Team - can't wait to get our team jersey's, then we'll almost look like real bikers.:p

What's in your stable? 2006 Trek 1600 WSD, 2007 Gary Fischer Hi-Fi, 1987 Schwinn Tempo, Trek 920 frame that I hope to make into something someday, maybe a single speed winter bike?

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 48 going down BIG hill here in WI last October

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I have some somewhere...

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I never lie.;)

Most memorable moment on my bike: Crashing into a spectator during a race. Well, really she lived nearby and didn't have the foggiest idea what was going on. She was twice my size and wearing a blue nylon windbreaker when I ran my bike right between her legs, then she fell on top of me and my bike. I was really mad and said many choice words and threw my bike at her.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding the BWUB (Bike With Us to Bayfield) and Tuesday night shop rides.

What's in your stable? Kona Jake the Snake. Specialize Allez. and Old Blue.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? oh....I'd say around 40, on the down side of a hill I'd bet.

Another picture of yourself or your ride?

Drenched in mud but keeping a brave face: (see below...maybe?)

Most memorable moment on my bike:
I remember it like it was yesterday (it was yesterday). All day I had thought i was having trouble with my left pedal and/or clear, but when I checked it out, nothing seemed wrong. Then later, while riding though a busy intersection my entire left crank arm falls off....while still attached to my shoe. uh, that was an odd sensation. It was ok though. I managed to pedal though the intersection with my right foot, with the crank arm dangling from my left foot. then stopped and got it put back on well enough to make it home. But I still can't believe it managed to work it's way off.

Most fun ever had on a bike?
Riding around empty streets and parks and the golf course in my hometown in Iowa at 2am and later on my mom's old cruiser (before i had my own) with my boyfriend and my good friends, the summer before I moved away.

Close second would be riding around Crater Lake last summer. Amazing!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I plead the 5th!

Most memorable moment on my bike: It was my first metric and I was very tired and it rained almost the whole ride I was passed by two very small and attractively built women, as well as, my husband and we were just about to go up one of my least fav hills in the ride (i'm not very good with hills) and my DH made a smart a$$ comment and took off up the hill. I am at that time a 225 lb woman took off after him up this giant hill and passed the two women, who passed me. My husband was so proud that I blew right by those girls as if they were standing still.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I took my first ride with clips, which I was afraid of and crashed! Mashed and bloodied my knee and elbow. What can I say...I'm a tomboy!

Explanation of your handle: I've borrowed it from an LGBT cycling group. I like the play on words...be out, outside, outta town, etc. and biking is one of my favorite ways to do that.

Explanation of your avatar: the head badge on my bike

Age (general or specific): 39 in '08

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Not sure....probably downhill on the Big Island of Hawai'i

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Hmmm...non digital. I'll work on that this season.

Most memorable moment on my bike: My first century maybe 12 years ago...a now defunct ride called the Tour de Hardscrabble. About 80 miles into the ride there was a WALL of a hill climbing out of the Arkansas River canyon. I had trained well and felt great - I told my riding buddy I'd see him at the rest stop at the top and powered up the incline feeling strong and free!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Often my last ride - but I'm just reminded of a time as a kid when one member of our bike gang got the first 10 speed of anyone in the group - I raced her around the block with my one or 3 speed? and won!

Explanation of your handle: It goes back to having to pick a screen name for AIM in college. At the time, I wanted a blue beetle. Now I see that it's kind of impracticle, especially with the biking addiction (I love my Subaru).

Explanation of your avatar:

Age: 25

Favorite bike: I know if I choose a favorite, the others will somehow find out and start getting a plethora of flats or suddenly the brakes will fail on a steep downhill.

Fastest speed on a road bike? I prefer dirt....so 28 mph on singletrack

Most memorable moment on my bike:
I have far too many memorable crashes (headfirst into a tree, headfirst into the ground, landing on the end of my bars and having a purple ODI imprint bruised on my ribs), being attacked by yellow jackets after running over a hive...And then there's the nice kind of memorable like riding on the wheels of some of the fastest guys in my club (OK, it was for 5 min. and then I was dropped, but it was the BEST 5 minutes!).

Most fun ever had on a bike?

What's in your stable? A white box car

Fastest speed on a road bike? I'm slowly working towards my first road bike, so I can;t answer this question.

Most memorable moment on my bike:
My first crash as a child, of course. Hit the breaks on a steep downhill, slid because of the dirt, leaves, and acorns, back tire came up, I flipped over the handle bars and did a nice hand and face slide on the pavement. More recently, riding with my boyfriend through the city, stopping at the top of a bridge that goes over 92 and waving at all the cars passing by. A total happy moment for the both of us.

Most fun ever had on a bike?
Has yet to come but I'm looking forward to it.

Explanation of your avatar: It's, um, an echidna. They're spiny, reclusive, squat, have a decent power/mass ratio, and can make it in the desert without REM sleep for long periods of time. Unlike me, they also eat ants.

Age: 44

Occupation: Bike Commuter, Fitness Training lecturer - I wear many hats.

Favorite bike: The one I'm riding.

What's in your stable? omigod. Ok. My name is Sandy, and I have a bike problem. Where's the coffee? Coming clean: a Bianchi track bike, an Ibis hardtail, a Fuji hybrid/commuter, and, well, some road bikes: a Fuji Pro, a Cannondale, a Slim Chance, and a Teesdale. I don't have to count bare frames and the mostly-Trek FrankenBike on loan to my daughter who's away at college. Right?

Most memorable moment on my bike: Calvin's Challenge 2002. The weather was perfect!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Oh, so hard to pick just one! Probably riding around Crater Lake in August a few years back.

Where do you live? Oslo, Norway

Explanation of your handle:
Well, Tigress is actually a derivate from Tigern, which is the Norwegian name for Hobbes as in Calvin & Hobbes, but Tigern or Hobbes or Tigergirl or anything similar is usually taken. However, the feminine variety of Tiger is not used in the Norwegian language, so for an anglophone like me it was natural to try that when looking for a nick for a forum registration. So that was first halv of the explanation - it's TRigress because I'm a novice triathlete...

Explanation of your avatar:

What is the biggest lie you've ever told:

Most memorable moment on my bike:
I think that must be either my first ride on a road bike ever, or the first ride in Balsfjord, watching the snow on the mountains surrounding the Balsfjord as I was riding along.

Most fun ever had on a bike?

Trigress
03-24-2008, 03:14 AM
Hello, good to see you! I have to admit that I have indeed noticed you before, being from Tiger City as well...

I'm located at Bogerud, and at the moment I do not have a club. I've just returned south from Troms, and the only time I've been in a race was Smaalenene Rundt in 2005, two weeks after getting my bike. Then I raced for OSI Sykkel. I wasn't going to ride Enebakk Rundt, having no team, and being a crap cyclist, but maybe I should? Hmmm. I'll have to see, I have exams coming up, and my major goal this season is my first ever 70.3 triathlon, Seigmann, in Stavern in July, so that has first priority!

I have to congratulate you on the choice of team, though - being from Rælingen Ceres is the local team, you know. But why Ceres when based in Groruddalen, wouldn't Nittedal or any of the Oslo teams be your local team?

lph
03-24-2008, 03:31 AM
Well, I went to a start-up meeting with Rye, and was a bit put off by their massive emphasis on Trondheim-Oslo. I may do T-O someday but I'm in no hurry - I only just got a road bike last summer and just want to try out a little racing without a huge commitment. I live north-east in Groruddalen, Ceres is "just around the corner", road riding is nice up thataway and I have a friend who already rides with them. So I sucked it up and went and bought one of their horrendously ugly jerseys ;) Group training starts in a week.

I have another bike riding colleague who lives at Lambertseter. I can send you a pm if you're interested in joining us for a ride sometime.

Good luck with your triathlon! I'm much too bad a swimmer to even consider one, but my camping girlbuddy is thinking of doing her first this summer.

Explanation of your handle: I'm a fiddler, of sorts

Age: b. 1940 (am I the oldest here?)

Occupation: retired nerd

What's in your stable? Winter: a frankenbike ('95 Mongoose frame, all sorts of kludgey non-original parts). Summer: '84 Miyata mixte-frame tourer.

Fastest speed on a road bike? I try not to go fast - I'd hate to break anything important.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Don't have any

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Everything I say is a lie :)

Most memorable moment on my bike: That very busy moment when I was about 12 that ended with me getting my face picked clean of glass, rocks, and dirt and the hole (from the handlebar--no grips) stitched closed.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Probably the times when I've had a flat road to myself on a warm summer day and have been able to pedal serenely along enjoying the scenery rather than worrying about traffic.

Yep, it's The Thing To Do among road riders here. If you tell someone you ride a road bike they immediately ask if you've done Trondheim-Oslo. There are shorter versions like Lillehammer-Oslo, which is dubbed "Lille Styrkeprøven", or "The Little Test of Strength". Sounds a bit strange in English :D

Trigress
03-25-2008, 04:17 AM
There is support on T-O.

And my impression is that more non-cyclists ask about this, while real cyclists aren't that into it - you need a really big team to do well, and so the smaller clubs aren't that enthusiastic. It's very hyped though.

Most memorable moment on my bike: When my hubby and I were 13 yrs old we did our first organized bike ride. It was a bike-a-thon for McDonalds and we both rode our dads 12 speeds. Those bikes were so big for us!

I've driven from Trondheim to Lillehamer (winter Olympics in a rent-a-wreck :p). It's narrow, it's hilly, it's beautiful. There were deep snow drifts right up to the edge of the road. I can imagine it's beautiful in Spring or Summer.

Silly huh?

Welcome, Cindy/Cyn!
There's a good group of us in the NW - and Seattle area too; in fact, we're getting together to ride (not tiptoe) through the tulips on the 19th (it's in the Northwest section)...and you'd be most welcome to join us.

Hi Mary,

Cool cool! Wasn't yesterday (the 12th) to die for?
I went to Pacific Bike on NE 8th on the Sammamish plateau to get new brakes on my Mongoose, and came home with a Specialized Sirrus! :-) The good folks at Pac Bike are going to bring my Mongoose back to me, as riding two bikes at once is problematic LOL ~ I'm determined to let my 2000 Camaro sit in the garage, till it becomes a classic ~

I'll head over to the Northwest section and see about the ride on the 19th. ~ Now if we could just have more of yesterdays weather!!

Many Huggz, and the wind be at 'yer back! Aaaaaaarrrrr

Yep, Saturday sure was gorgeous; looks like (from all of the rides posts) that plenty of TE'ers - both in the NW and elsewhere - got out to enjoy it.
Sweet on yer new bike! Post some pics, if you can, so we can all ooh and ahhh!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: When I was in the 8th grade, I tried to kiss a boy inbetween classes....but he turned his head away, landing my lips on his cheek.... apparently it embarrased me so bad I hit him over the forehead with the side of my fist....I BROKE a bone in my hand doing that...but told the teachers, my parents that I broke it on the school door.... the School ended up paying for it all because it was 'school related' and the boy never told anyone....I guess he was embarrased to have been hit by a girl! anyway...I didn't tell my parents the truth until I was an adult!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Just started riding a couple weeks ago...will update when one happens!! :)

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm sure I've told some whoppers but I can't remember. Besides that I always get caught, my conscious always gives way.

Real name: Karin

Where do you live? just outside of Boston

Explanation of your handle: my favorite bike is named Oberon, and Obie is the nickname. By now I use obie for a lot of things, so I'm used to it. The real Obie is currently double-locked to a signpost just outside

Age (general or specific) 32

Occupation: Nonprofit fundraiser

Favorite bike: Obie!

What's in your stable?
Obie is a 1994 Specialized Hard Rock FS
Beagle is a steel Seven Axiom with custom paint/stars all over (bought 2006)
Oxo Sahara is a green Surly Cross-Check that I "adopted" from a team-mate last September
Quinn is my ten-speed from the mid-80s

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I haven't had a speedo on for a while. But I do remember, when I used to lead bike trips at a summer camp, one of my campers and I doing 40+ down a hill

Another picture of yourself or your ride?
not sure how!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I have to think about that. Unfortunately, I'm pretty painfully honest. To add a fun fact, though, I've dated two guys I met at baseball games, one guy I met on a plane, and two guys I met while ice skating (the second was the keeper, and we've been happily married over five years)

Most memorable moment on my bike: There are too many to count. I started riding late (8 was late in my small town) and am still making up for lost time! I have gotten lost all over as a teenager, led 4-day bike trips at summer camp, did more getting lost in college, graduated to 100+ mile rides to random places after college (all on Obie), met a roadie, started doing time trials and crits (I suck but have fun), and just discovered cross last year. Am starting to mountain bike too. But above all I am a commuter at heart.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Either Cross, or having meetings in town where I ride in and no one can even tell that I rode instead of driving or taking the T. Or riding with the husband.
