But root beer is hideous and beer, if you believe Benjamin Franklin (as one must in this instance), is proof that God loves us. :D

Well, I kinda figure that if it's available nationwide in the US, it doesn't really deserve to be called beer. ;) The microbrews referred to by veloputt on the other hand...

Another picture of yourself or your ride? also coming...

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: That feels so good!

I had a Coor's Light, yuck, after my only race this year. Geez, it never tasted soooo good. I downed it like a soda pop. That's because it is basically soda pop :D But I'll bet it was very refreshing.

I've seen time and time again that even humdrum food tastes wonderful after a long ride. Heck, maybe I'd even enjoy a Coors Light after a ride. Especially if it was the only beer available ... :D

Hey, Sue, welcome to the forum! I truly laughed out loud at the image of you knocking over the Christmas tree while clipping in and out!

So cool that you're a pilot--it's an old, old dream of mine.

Your Christmas tree adventure reminds me of a story about my Mom. When she was a little girl, her parents surprised her with her first bike, and a copy of the book Heidi. The story is she spent the entire day perched on the bike, reading the book. Fast forward 50 years...my mom's quit smoking, started biking again (on her mom's old three speed) and joined a bike club. We three "kids" got her the bike of her dreams for Christmas. And a new copy of Heidi. She's never looked back. Put over 1,500 miles on her new bike the first year. :D

Best wishes in the new year! Lise

What's in your stable? right now a 2003Trek Navigator 300 Wheat Silver color. But, by mid Februry I should have a 2006 Trek 7.5 FX!

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? don't have a road bike

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't have very many pixs of myself - I hate having my pix taken, but may have a few, will have to check on that.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told:

Most memorable moment on my bike: My oldest daughter and I travelled to southern Illinois to the Tunnel Hill State Trail last summer. We stopped at Garden of the Gods and hiked aroud quite a bit and taking pics...well I jumped down off a rock and my sandal came off and my foot came down on a tree root, causing my toe to bleed. Anyway, we finished hiking around. The next morning we got up early and rode 50 miles,we saw several deer that just ran right down the trail out ahead of us... then later on down the trail a big ol turkey came out and ran straight down the trail and then finally took flight. It was awesome. We also saw a few little snakes and those salamander lizard things. We had a great time- but exhausting and my whole foot hurt. It wasn't until we got back to the motel when I took my shoes and socks off and saw the number I did on my foot- the whole top of the toes area was black and blue. anyway it wasn't until 2 or 3 weeks later my foot was still bothering me and still swollen..so went and had an x-ray...yes, I had a broken toe and rode 50 miles!
(opps sorry so long)

Explanation of your avatar: none

Age (general or specific): 50.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? not right now

Most memorable moment on my bike: I've done Boston to Martha's Vineyard in a day, but that was a long time ago.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Building wheels is fun. Getting covered with grease is fun. Riding is fun too.

Hi everyone - I'm new to the message board, but I've been reading your posts for the last few weeks. I've never owned a road bike, but have been searching for the perfect one (great fit, but not crazy expensive) and finally think I've found "the one." I'm signed up to do a tri in May, so I know I will be here A LOT reading what you wonderful women have to say!! So, here I am...can't wait to learn even more about all of you :)

Real name: Lesley

Where do you live? Bethesda, MD (Washington, DC...originally from St. Louis area)

Explanation of your handle: e-mail from college and user name for EVERYTHING

Explanation of your avatar: none...but maybe someday

Age (general or specific): 23

Occupation: marketing consultant

Former occupation: graduated from the University of Missouri in May 05...go Tigers!!

Favorite bike: hopefully the one I'm going to buy...I've decided on the Trek 1500, and now I'm just looking around for the best price in the area.

What's in your stable? I'm so new I don't have one!

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? ummm...maybe like 10 mph - riding around DC at bike stores - today ;) (I'm SOOOO new to road bikes!)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I promise I'll post the bike when I have it in my hot little hands

Most memorable moment on my bike: Today at the bike shop, when I took the Trek out for a spin, and I knew that bike was it...it's been a LONG search

Most fun ever had on a bike? When I "test drove" the first road bike. It wasn't the right bike, it was raining, and I was scared, but it was at that moment that I knew I was going to LOVE this sport.

Stupidest thing ever done on a bike: When I was in high school, I took a 2 hour ride with my class and rode as hard as I could and tried to stay at the top of the pack. I ended up getting dehydrated, throwing up, and almost having to go to the hospital for an IV. I now drink lots of water :)

:D That's it....ECSTATIC to buy my bike!!!

Welcome, Carol! My mom took up biking when she was 59, so you've still got her beat. She's had an incredible decade with it. She joined a bike club in her town, and learned a lot about bikes and riding technique. This November, her bike club members threw a blow-out 70th birthday party for her. :D

Hope your knee heals up soon and that you're back on the bike before you know it!

Hi EasterBird, Don't feel bad about the Giant Sedona! That's the same bike I was riding and loving a year ago. I loved riding that bike. It is such a comfortable ride. I put many miles on it and rode my first organized ride on it as well. I bought a road bike last May but still have the Sedona. I commute to work, weather permiting, and the roads are very messy right now so I use the Sedona as my winter commute bike. You're out there putting some serious miles on that bike! That all that matters! Keep up the good riding and hope your knee feels better soon. BikerHen

Whew!! Took the weekend off and the board exploded!!

Deb: Vintage Bikes ROCK!!! I ride a 1987 Peugeot Avoraiz and a 1989 Trek 1100 and love them Both! I'm riding the Peugeot right now as my winter commute bike!!

Inew: my neice is currently going to UMo - Go TIGERS!!! Great idea on buying a Trek - we Trek riders are trying to take over the world so bringing another one into the fold is just part of our master plan!! ;) Welcome to the board and of COURSE let us know when you get the bike!!

Easter: we never laugh at any bike anyone rides - it's the joy of riding that matters!! My first "get-back-into-biking" bike was a Trek Navigator 200 - 26" comfort bike. I put over 1500 miles on that thing before people started either giving me or selling me cheap their too short road bikes! (helps being short and having tall riding buddies!)

Elodie: another vintage bike! Yeeehaaa!! congrats on the MS ride and your personal best! Are you doing the MS ride this year too??

Welcome to the board everyone and hope to hear more from ya'll!!

Vintage? My bike shop guys tell me the wheel on my Schwinn Racer (1968) is "pre-war" and they don't mean Viet Nam. Brass brake shoes, even :-)

My 7500FX is great, so I'm sure the 7.5 FX will be too - I don't need a road bike. (I'd suggest getting skinnier tires though if you're riding on the road.)

Thanks for the great welcome - and Lise I love the Daschund!!!
Yeah, isn't that fabulous? Snapdragen found it for me to use as my avatar. (Again, I bow in gratitude to Snapdragen)

It's sort of a good luck thing for me; we had a dachshund (Schatzi) who lived to be 18. Now I look for dachshunds at every triathlon or long running race--I almost always see one, too. :D

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Don't have many pictures of myself...

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: the biggest? hmm, gotta think about that one...

Most memorable moment on my bike: lol hitting a rock, skidding sideways, trying to catch myself, and making a big hole in my palm - twice - on each side

Welcome sandraseigle! It's great to see another Okie on the board. I had to look up where Hugo is as I've only lived in OK for a year and don't know where much is. If you're even in OKC let's get together and ride!

Welcome to the board Sandra!! No tardys on this forum ma'am, people wander in and out all the time and we love having each and every one of you?...them?...us?? Anyway.........sorry to hear about your bike loss - are you looking for a replacement?? riding something right now in the interim?

sandraseigle
01-25-2006, 01:54 AM
Thanks for the welcome everyone :)

Tatormc - Don't make it to OKC much, but I'll keep you in mind if I do! :) Glad to see another Okie myself, sometimes I feel like I'm on a completely different planet lol...and don't worry about not knowing where it is, some people that have lived in Oklahoma all their lives didn't even know Hugo existed :p I've lived in Oklahoma for, hmm...about 8 years now *sigh* I'm originally from Denver, CO (and I miss it SOOO much), we may be moving back soon...HURRAY, civilization! :p

Corsair Mac - bleh, Where I live, roads are REALLY bad, and there's virtually no sidewalks  every once in a while though, one of my girlfriends and I ride around the cemetary (morbid, I know lol, but it's the best road in town  )... I have to borrow her hubby's bike for now (not the most comfortable thing in the world, either, since it's a man's bike - ouch :) ) but, we're getting our tax check soon (earned income on two little ones, woo-hoo :P) so I'll probably try to replace my old one then...I may have to go way out of town (or state) to do it lol, but I will! :) I'm going to get my oldest daughter a bike too, even though she'll only be able to ride it in the back yard...but I've been looking forward to her first big-girl bike for a long time! :)

Until then, I stay active chasing my girls - a full time job, my oldest is 3 1/2, and my youngest is 17 months :) - and doing Pilates and Tae-Bo :) (and, um...wearing out my Dance-dance Revolution pad lol, I'm such a nerd, but it's SOOO fun! :P)

What's in your stable? Trek 2200 alpha series

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I think 68kph, on 4th Line Road North of Burlington Ontario

Another picture of yourself or your ride? see attached

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm a horrible liar! But probably some exaggeration of how quickly I hiked a mountain or something.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Coming up to a two way stop on our way home from a race, my mom and I didn't have the stop so were slowing down only a bit to go through. But this clueless elderly woman doesn't stop at her sign and is apparently oblivious to our presence. Just at the last second she pulls through, and I pile on the breaks. I came about six inches from going face first into the car. Meanwhile, my mom is behind me and just barely misses hitting me. I yelled out a not so nice name at the woman, which my mom (fortunately) heard as "ditch". A reminder to always watch your tongue when mom's around;)

Most fun ever had on a bike? Probably my first sprint tri. I'm slow in the water so catching up on the bike is a great feeling for me. It was a reminder that everyone has strengths and weaknesses.

Occupation: Policy analyst for a regional environmental non-profit

Favorite bike: Oh, how can I choose?

What's in your stable? Of course they all have names:

Mango: 1999 orange LeMond Alpe d'huez roadie with Campy: my "city" bike

Tomato: 2000 (?) (CAAD 4?) red Team Cannondale Campy Record roadie: my nice weather bike

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Hmm. Not sure. I caught some speed on some of the Queen Anne hills when I lived in Seattle...40+ something?

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Hmm. Incriminate myself, why?!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Most recently, the finish line of the 108 mile NYC century in September. It was a long ride, which is not a big deal, but it was the longest last "20 miles" of my life, with all the starts and stops of the city bike riding. Overall, it was an amazing day.

(Or was it when I was still trying to like mountain biking, and it was failing, and I was crying and I tried to throw my old POS Cannondale MTB off the side of a cliff on a trail in SW Washington state?)

Most fun ever had on a bike? My first century, the NYC Century, of course! Though I very much enjoyed riding in Portland, OR a few summers ago and being spoiled by Breakfast on the Bridge on my commute into work (organic fair-trade coffee, organic berries on homemade organic pancakes...mmm)

Thanks for the invitation! I have to say i still have a long way before I can ride a century but I'll get there.

I ride the West Orange Trail http://www.dep.state.fl.us/gwt/guide/regions/eastcentral/trails/west_orange.htm on the weekend, normally on Saturday. I think it is a great place but of course that is the only trail I know. I only go there once a week since is a bit far from my house but my husband and I finally decided to do the trail Sat and Sun since i am really getting used to the bike. Hope to see you there sometime. I need to find out where that Green Swamp Trail is. Any Gators in that trail? :p

Nanci
02-05-2006, 04:41 PM
I heard about the Green Swamp Trail, but couldn't find it, but then finally did. It's official name is the James Van Fleet Trail. 29.2 miles, from Mabel to Polk City. Think slightly west of Clermont. I rode it last summer for the first time, the last week of August. It was an amazing ride- totally isolated, only four, I think, road crossings in 30 miles, the first after 10 miles. I saw _river otters_ playing on the trail. Pretty swamp later gave way to cow pastures, but it stayed wild and unpopulated. No houses, no convenience stores. A couple trailheads. Beautiful, wild.

I rode it again a few weeks ago, and it seemed kind of desolate. Maybe because it was winter, maybe because it was a holiday and I was in a sort of time constraint, but it wasn' quite the religious experience of my first ride. I want to try it again when it is spring and green.

Don't worry about being able to ride 100 miles. I started road riding a year ago October, on a borrowed MTB with road tires. My first event was 37 miles of the Horrible Hundred, a year ago November. I just went because BF was doing the Century, and I didn't want to stay home. (Many, if not all, Centuries have a few shorter options.) I had to walk the hills. I had the time of my life! BF was riding the full Century, so I had time for a nice nap before he returned. I set my goal for 2005 as a full Century. Seemed unthinkable at the time. I didn't ride, really, until July, when I began riding in earnest. I bought my road bike the last week in August, on eBay. I had the week off, and took her all over Florida, on all the trails. I did a sprint tri on Labor Day. I did half of Six Gap in September, the Three Gap 50, in Dahlonega, GA. It was the best ride of my life. Then my first Century in October, Santa Fe Century in Gainesville. Think nice and flat. Then the Horrible Hundred in November, and I _didn't have to walk the hills!_ Then on to brevets, this winter. So from more or less nothing, in July, to 190 miles now. It's easy! Just go a little further each weekend, throw in a few weeknight rides, and before you know it, anything is possible.

Hi Nanci! Welcome to the forums. :) Don't worry about someone else named Nanci. That's my middle name, too...

And my last name starts with an "L", so that's like Nanci L! My initials are NEL.

BF calls me Nan, he's the first person ever to do so, so all his friends know me as Nan. It's kind of weird.

I used to work at a place where there were two of us, but she spelled her name differently, so they called us "With an I" and "With a Y." That won't work for us! :-)

Lise, that's what the trails are down here, too, old RR beds- they just go through prettier places! For all you hear about Florida being over-populated, I guess that must be out by the coasts, because in the central parts, there is a _lot_ of wild country. My sister was down here for some conference with some colleagues from around the country. They were surprised to see a Bald Eagle sitting along the side of the road. They do that all the time here. Often enough that it's not shocking to see one there. Like right on the outskirts of town, still in a populated area. One of the things I like most is the flocks of cranes- love seeing them out grazing in fields, or flying overhead so high you can't see them, but you can clearly hear them. My bird, Dill, can see them, though. Pigeons have much keener eyesight.

Hmmm, more coincidences...until just recently there was another Nancy in my office (spelled with a 'y') and our receptionists would have to ask if they wanted the 'i' or 'y'. Nanciellen is actually all one first name. My middle name starts with an "L" though. :)

Real name: Krishelle, but you can call me Kris.

Where do you live? Utah

Explanation of your handle: It's what my neices call me (they think it's funny to pronounce it "antique"...but I don't think I'm THAT old!)

Explanation of your avatar: Don't even know about that!

Age (general or specific): 34

Occupation: Playing on the internet...really!

Favorite bike: My only bike...see below...

What's in your stable? Giant OCR1 Road Bike

Fastest speed on a road bike? Probably no more than 30 mph

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Haven't had one yet.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: ?

Most memorable moment on my bike: The first time I rode my bike further than around the block. I went with a great cyclist, and felt like such a newbie. I didn't yet have my own cycling clothes yet, so I wore my DH's shorts and they kept getting caught on the nose of my saddle and trying to come down. :p But, it was a great ride and I was on a high for days after.

Most fun ever had on a bike? When I finally learned to descend without braking...what a thrill!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I live about an hour south of Salt Lake.
Weather is cold but clear here today...looks like nice riding weather, but still a bit too cold-in the 30's, or maybe by now 40's (haven't been out for a bit). Looking forward to a warm up soon.
I guess to a bunch of pre-teens, 34 is OLD! :D

I remember once when I was about 8, my siblings and I were calculating how old we'd be in the year 2000. When I found out I'd be in my 40s, I remember wondering if I would even still be alive - I mean 40 was so OLD! guess time and distance changes ones persepective eh? (now the thought of 60 seems old! ;) )

Explanation of your handle: Selected it for an online gaming name; means Daughter of the Moon - is Native American of origin, though I forget which tribe specifically... is also the name of a few lakes / areas in Midwest & East Coast US

Explanation of your avatar: Female, Red Hair, Bicycle! What else is needed? I bought this poster last year, just need to frame & hang it. I've seen the jersey, but it was discontinued by the time I knew to look for it.

Age (general or specific): over 30

Favorite bike: Still Searching

What's in your stable? "Elise" ~ she's a Tirreno Razza 4.0, first adult bike.

Fastest speed on a road bike? 43mph where? downhill, local ride when? summer 04

Another picture of yourself or your ride? <>

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: 7th grade ~ boy turns to me in class and asks - as if it were the worst thing in the world to be - 'are you a virgin?' I heard his tone, my mind didn't compute the question until after I, Aghast, replied No!

Most memorable moment on my bike: After struggling thru my longest ride to date (an 86 mile, wicked elevation, billed at 75) and barely overcoming the mental barrier - crossed the finish line only to crash 100 feet later when avoiding a feeble spectator that crossed in front of me on the sidewalk that was the finishers path.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Leading the pack (all but 1 were male) over rolling hills, dropping riders off the tail, and having the 'expert' rider in our group tell me after that he "saw the train leaving, and knew he'd have to power up to say on!" followed by "boy, you have a lot of energy!"

Added - Ride History: DH grew up riding w/ his father, long event rides, etc. He got back into it a few years back, and convinced me to join him. We started taking spinning together Winter 03-04, I got my first road bike in the last week of the Tour 04, finished the warm season with a half century. Second season made 3 event rides, all 65+ including the first Oregon LiveStrong ride. (Saw George twice that summer!) Currently working on getting fit to make a Century - really need to drop 15-20lb. Off Season - spin ~3x/week, When dry & not freezing, will maintain min 30mi rides 2-3x/week.

Welcome, Noko!
Loved the biggest lie story...7th grade is such a hard time of life...I remember many head-games like that from that period of my life. You never knew quite why they were asking or what the answer should be. Boy I'm glad THAT'S over!

Hi Noko- Welcome to the board. You must live near the Team Estrogen headquarters! They take good care of us here.

I'll be in your area this summer as I am doing the STP for the 3rd time. Have you thought of doing this ride? It's lots of fun and not very difficult- just long.

When I read about your crash, I just couldn't believe it! Of all places and times. I trust you weren't hurt too badly and the pedestrian survived as well. People just don't look out for cyclists- We've all had either encounters or CLOSE encounters with just such a scenario as yours.

Re bikes- I'm riding a Scott CR1- all carbon bike. I also have a Jamis Quest- steel with carbon forks that I rode for 2 years before I got the Scott this past December. If you have time to ride different makes and models, that is what I would suggest. Kinda like shoes- If the shoe fits wear it......

Maybe I'll have the pleasure of meeting you in Portland. I'll be coming up with some other women I ride with. Looks like we will be staying an extra day to play in Portland. Great place for that!

Nokomis
02-11-2006, 12:04 PM
Bike Goddess - the only thing I bruised was my pride... falling when you're that exhausted feels a lot worse than it actually is. The woman who stepped into my path wasn't hit (thank goodness!) but she did turn & exclaim "did I do that? oh please tell me I didn't do that!" I'm pretty sure the only thing to come out of my mouth - other than Ow! - was a variation on four letter words. ack!

I don't have any plans currently to do STP... I'm actually trying to pretend it doesn't exist. My husband really wants to do the one day ride, and that makes me very nervous. I've heard it wrecks your knees to push thru & do that, and he's already had both his ACLs replaced. Plus, he's type1 diabetic, so I get a little paranoid that something would happen on that strenuous of a ride.

We try to hit the Vine Ride & may do the MS150 again. Bridge Pedal is okay - but we'd have to be in the first group out the gate to not get stuck in tourism traffic like we did last year - it was silly. (Entire feild stopped suddenly on top of a bridge, No warning, and people were standing in the middle of all the booths trying to shove bananas or bottled juice / energy drinks at you if you approached.)

Anyhow ~ enjoy Portland! when are you going to be up?

I emailed title 9 once cause at the time I thought my friend should be in there catalog, never thought about myself. Thanks for the complement!
I went camping this weekend and didn't get on my computer till last night. Came on the forum and was overwhelmed by the responce to my work. I appreciate all the praise! I have been doing it going on 19 years. I was 19 when i started. And is how I met my husband. Who is also my teacher in sculpting. He is a natural at it. I have had to work a little harder. There are mainly guys in this business so I had to really work hard so it didn't look like I just wanted to hang out with my boyfriend. I can post where my jobs are so if anyone wants to see them in person? My first job so far this year is not till next months in iowa. I also do the Colorado state fair every year in Aug if anyone is interested.

Annie, quad city,Iowa. It is a garden show I think it start's on the 23rd. I am not positive where the show is held there my guess is a convention center maybe. I tink if you google quad city flower show it migt say.
And they are temporary. Most clients take tem down as soon as the event is over but some have kept them up and let nature take it's coarse. The longest outdoor one to date was just over a year. It went through several snow storms and a spring thaw.
CorsairMac-the AZ fair if I am correct was 1994 and 95. Tough jobs too. 8 guys 1 women (me) and 115 degree weather for 32 days. I only broke down and cried twice on the first one and once on the 2nd job. We got 4 inches of rain in two hours on the 2nd job. Erased two weeks of detail. I cried as i watched it go away and then started laughing. grabbed a piece if plywood and started surfing the run off!

Where do you live? San Mateo, CA (just south of San Francisco)

Explanation of your handle: It's my company name -- Velo Girls

Age (general or specific) 40 -- but I say I'm 35 in my online dating profiles -- men don't understand that 40 year old women are sexy, savvy, and sassy!

Occupation: Cycling Coach (how lucky am I?)

Favorite bike: I can't play favorites because the others will get jealous

What's in your stable? Trek Madone 5.9 SL with Campy Record (white with pink & silver flames and wheels I built myself -- pink Chris King hubs laced with silver spokes and silver Velocity rims), Lemond Victoire (for sale, wanna buy it?), Felt S22 time trial bike with a Zipp disk, Luna Orbit custom cyclocross bike (pink and purple) currently built up as a single speed (more pink hubs), Ritchey Break-Away steel cyclocross frame (also for sale), Ritchey Break-Away titanium cyclocross bike (a prototype frame that I was lucky enough to get for nationals -- thank you, Ritchey), Litespeed Pisgah hardtail mountain bike (with pink and silver streamers), Rivendell Atlantis touring bike that I built up myself, and a really cool track bike that I need to sell because I don't ride it and it deserves to be loved a lot (built by Dale Sasso for Bobby Walthour). Oh, and a 1968 Murray tricycle (red ) that was my very first bike!

What bikes do you covet? I'm planning to build up a single speed mountain bike soon. I've got my eyes on the Bianchi P.U.S.S. just because it's pink. I also want to get a true single speed cyclocross bike to replace the Luna. Alas.....no more new bikes until I sell a few.....

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 56.2 on one of the California AIDS Rides -- descending from the Evil Twins. Luckily, I couldn't see the speed on my computer at the time or I probably would've freaked out. Anything over 45 usually makes that little voice in my head scream.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't like to be photographed.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I don't really lie (well, except for my age in my online dating profiles).

Most memorable moment on my bike: Dang! That's a tough one. Recently, it would be my three-week self-supported tour in upstate NY (where I grew up) to celebrate my 40th (I mean 35th) birthday. It was an important trip for me. I'd been off the bike for a good part of the year due to two surgeries, so I had six weeks to regain the fitness to do this trip. There's nothing as empowering as travelling by bike (a bike I built up all by myself), carrying all your gear, visiting places I'd lived, friends, my parents' graves. I met the most incredible people, had some wild adventures, and was able to relive (and relieve) some of my past. I plan to ride cross-country to celebrate my 45th (I mean 40th) in 2010.

Most fun ever had on a bike? That's another tough one. I think it would be the day I discovered The Shells -- a really cool dirt park (jumps) hidden right on the bay in Foster City. I rode around like a little kid, jumping, getting air, and being generally foolish.

Worst time ever on a bike Kinda sad, but this one's an easier answer. Getting hit by a car ranks high on this list. So does crashing at Nationals. But I think my all-time worst day was a date. It was a second date with this guy I didn't really like. I had the crazy idea that we should go on a tandem ride (he had a tandem and I'd never ridden one and was curious). I know some folks love to tandem, but it sure wasn't fun for me -- sitting on the back of a bike, feeling completely out of control, needing to trust someone I barely knew, and staring at his butt for hours. Sheesh! I'm sure that statement right there will tell you all more about me than anything else I've written.

Oh, and a 1968 Murray tricycle (red ) that was my very first bike!.

Holey moley !!!

Explanation of your avatar: Guess I should get one of those!

Age (general or specific) 42

Occupation: Psychotherapist

Favorite bike: the one that I can afford

What's in your stable? the car?

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Not sure about the speed, I just shut my eyes and hope for the best ;)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I guess that is another thing I should sort out :)

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: " I fully intend to go for that ride up that huge hill in the morning" ;) And I told it to myself...

Most memorable moment on my bike: On my first wobbly trip home from work two really cool guys on road bikes pulled up besides me, they had all the gear and looked way cool- and they started chatting to me about biking! I felt like I had arrived! :)

Most fun ever had on a bike? I'm the idiot with the permanent grin.

Favorite bike: My new Eros Donna '06. Would love to get a Davidson some day.

What's in your stable? Last year's Specialized Sirrus, a 1991 Burley tandem I ride with my husband

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Going down a long hill on the tandem, 40; down a local, shorter hill on my single, 34. On the flats, 24 on the tandem, 17 on the single.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Don't have one of me on it yet, but here's the ride: http://deenaheg.home.comcast.net/erosdonna06.jpg

Biggest lie: "Mom, I'm sleeping over at Susie's tonight." (at the same time, Susie is saying, "Mom, I'm sleeping over at Deena's tonight.")

Most memorable moment on my bike: Finishing the Seattle to Portland ride last year (first time) on the tandem.

Most fun I've ever had on my bike: I love the 60-mile training rides we do around Lake Washington on the tandem. The scenery's gorgeous, lots of different birds, the terrain is varied--it's just a blast.

Real name: Johanna Love

Where do you live? Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Explanation of your handle: I wrote a column in January about snow biking at 5 degrees, and mentioned that when the sun peeked over the butte and hit my face, it felt like a climax. A local pundit wrote a letter to the editor, poked fun at me and said he'd never had such a good time on a bike, maybe he should ask the CyclaSutra what he's doing wrong. :o

Explanation of your avatar: A photographer friend and I cruised Arizona in November. She had never ridden as an adult before, but I took her on an easy trail in Sedona, and she loved it. This is on a rental in Sedona.

Age (general or specific) 31.5

Occupation: Newspaper features editor

Favorite bike: Felt F70 with a "Girls Kick ***" sticker

What's in your stable? Also a hardtail Trek 8500 with a "Boys Lie" sticker that's disentigrating after too much mud ... and an Electra pink cruiser that I don't cruise often enough. Fourteen miles is too far to cruise it to the nearest coffee shop.

What bikes do you covet? I'd love a full-suspension mountain bike, but I'm on a shopping hiatus this year. I have everything I NEED. Want, that's a different story...

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 52 down the back side of Teton Pass (10 percent grade) on my way "Around the Block" last summer.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Let's see if these attachments work ... One is me and my nutty "pit crew," the other is during a four-leg race called the Pole, Pedal, Paddle. Obviously, I was the pedal, and part of the paddle. We were the "Shady Ladies" last year, and we won the fun class (probably because they judge you on how much FUN you're having, not because our outfits were all that).

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "I've had these shorts for a long time, punkin, they're not new."

Most memorable moment on my bike: Finally nailing a trackstand at a long traffic light ... sneaking up on a fisher during my commute ... standing in line at the coffee shop and knowing I earned that latte ... swooping through loop-de-loops on the singletrack.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Getting up after each endo, realizing that I didn't break anything on my body, and regaining the confidence to haul *** again.

Worst time ever on a bike: Either blowing out my ACL on a bad bunny hop  , or not finishing my first attempt at a double century because of sleet and snow.

Fastest speed on a road bike? Don't have a road bike, but did 50 km/h last summer. The ride down was great but the ride up... even better ;)

Another picture of yourself or your ride: I have to think about how to get a pic here!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm the worst lier ever! I just simply can't do it since I know I'll get into lot more trouble if I do so.

Most memorable moment on my bike: I always get a dreamlike feeling when riding in the great summer weather with my music on.. It's really magic..

Be happy I don't live by you. You'd be cleaning up a lot of drool and fingerprints.:D

Funny. It's so weird because all I've ever done is read about the Rohloff. Never seen one, let alone ridden one, but being a bit of gear-lover, just had to have one. Especially, since it will make taking care of the bike easier. (yeah, i know you can do the same thing with singlespeeds and fixies, but I like my gears)

I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. Seems unreal. Suppose it will ge more real as I start sending more $$$ out.

Lise, we are in a north surburb - we should ride sometime. I am a fair weather rider - not much into riding outside during Chicago winters, so i mostly spin. I did get out on the Green Bay Trail on a few of those freak 60 degree days with my kids, but they are 5, so we didn't go far or fast.

Explanation of your handle: LOL it's actually a variation of my usual handle (which is ardent_moon). ardent means "characterized by warmth of feeling typically expressed in eager zealous support or activity; impassioned" (merriam-webster). and my old handle is because i love the moon, this handle is because i love riding my bike. it makes me feel alive and happy like so few other things do. :D so yes, i'm a cheesy, writer woman and that was what i came up with. lol

Explanation of your avatar: avatar? :( i don't know how to get an avatar on here yet.

Age (general or specific) i'll be 29 on march 28th (next month)

Occupation: High School Teacher

Favorite bike: i'm new to cycling so all i know right now is that i love recumbents even though that's not what i'm riding. :)

What's in your stable? Motiv Performance Series Newport FS Mountain Bike (*chuckle* that makes it sound all fancy - my ex-bf bought it at Costco but it is a nice start for a girl on a budget)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? can i report back when the winter clears and i actually get to USE my bike computer (instead of admiring how nice it looks on my bike)? LOL - not that i'm bitter! x.x

Another picture of yourself or your ride? no pics of me as of yet.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: the biggest lie i've ever told has been to myself - that i'm not good enough, too fat, can't do it, not pretty enough, not smart enough, don't deserve to be happy etc etc etc - but i amgood enough, am working on it, am doing it, cute enough that i don't mind waking up with me, have 2 degrees so i must be at least somewhat intelligent and happiness is riding my bike with my hair whipping out behind me... then in my eyes, drooling and snotting on myself, falling off, getting back on and feeling like jelly when i'm done. life is what i choose to make it. :)

Most memorable moment on my bike: i honestly don't have one yet. my memory prediction though will be that my most memorable moment will occur when i ride across my country.

Most fun ever had on a bike? the moment when i was 5 years old and i realized that my bike was a form of freedom.

Most fun ever had on a bike? the moment when i was 5 years old and i realized that my bike was a form of freedom.

Isn't that the truth! What amazes me about my own kids and their lack of riding. When I was little, my horses and my bike were my tickets to parent free days. Get up in the morning and clear the heck out of Dodge. Here my boys are all older than 11 and can you get them to go on their own around any of the wonderful trails in our city? No. Running out of ideas. I think I may have to start paying them to tour the town.

That would be fun. There are a couple of us in the Chgo area on this board. I sure as heck did not go out on the bike today--chilly, windy, grey, in the 30's...but hope springs eternal. I grew up in LB/LF (if you live up there, you know where I mean!), and wiped out big-time on the GB trail when they were constructing it. I rode a portion that was still dirt with lots of ruts...it was 1979 and I had a skinny-tired 10 speed bike...caught a rut...face plant. Still have the scars to show for it. Looking forward to biking weather returning to the midwest! L.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I went on a ride earlier this month (was about 40) and I rode with another person we just rode and talked and before you knew it we had gone 27 miles. A couple of challenging hills but I did it and it was so cool to be riding in the middle of winter!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding all over town with my husband pulling the two kids in the bike trailer. We ended the ride with a sprint to the house. I won! Granted, he was pulling 50lbs of kids and the trailer, but...

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm terrible at lying. Tried it once when I was 7, but confessed a few hours later because I felt too guilty. (I'm sure Bikeless in WI can tell you more about that story)

Most memorable moment on my bike: The lie I told at age 7 involved a bike accident in a place I wasn't supposed to be riding at the time. Must have been memorable as I still remember it.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Said I won first place in the 2002 Fat Tire Classic in West Covina. I actually did win, however, I did not say that I was the only one in my class!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding the Lake Berryessa Loop on a 99 degree Sunday summer afternoon. Had one small water bottle, no money, no cell phone and was half way there when we ran out of water. Too far to turn back, too far to keep going. Couldn’t call my husband because he was with me. Finally made it to our destination, a store, and sat at the bar drinking gobs of water.

Just think - once you get the Ph.D. --- no more school and more time to ride!:D It felt like it took me forever, but at 32 I finally finished. How close are you? Good luck!

I could be very close..."just" need to write up the actual thesis. Could take me a couple of months, could take me a couple of years....who know...I certainly don't intend to wait until I finish before I start riding!

Welcome to the board Sandie! I'm not sure your "lie" counts as a lie! No one needs to know you were the ONLY one in your class right? LOL

Welcome to the board Tater! My brother spent a summer out in your neck of the woods on a potato farm - he wasn't the same "little boy" when he got home! And I fell in Love with Idaho when I went to visit him - just not the cold and snow!

Good to "meet" both of you and hope to see more of ya'll!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Hmmmm....that's a loaded question!

Most memorable moment on my bike: I was riding on a bike trail that goes through town...had to stop at an intersection, I VERY CAREFULLY looked both ways, started to go...and lo and behold, a car appeared. I wasn't moving very fast, but it scared me, so I bailed and my bike and the bottom half of me ended up under the car between the front and back wheels. I remember looking up at the driver, and him looking down at me like I was from another planet. I dragged myself out from under the car, leaving several large patches of skin, and as soon as I stood up, the guy took off. There was an older couple walking along the trail, and they were enraged on my behalf (although I was plenty mad). They asked me if I was ok, and when I said I was fine, they both pointed very solemnly at my left leg and said "I don't think so" at the same time. I looked down, and sho 'nuff - BLOOD EVERYWHERE...and I still had 3 miles to go to get back to where my car was!

Most fun ever had on a bike? See above (heh heh)

Ack! I'm glad you're still here. I know this is one of my worries (I bicycle commute typically). Luckily I'm in California these days (grew up in Dallas) where most people I've seen so far are fairly kind to cyclists though there have been a few people I wouldn't have minded hitting with a clue-by-four.

Did you get the guy's license plate number and report him?

Dobar dan Ivana! I wish I remembered how to say welcome in Croatian.

There was recently a question asked on this board about cycling in Croatia and I answered best I could but I'm sure you could do better. How's the cycling scene on your part of the world now? How are the roads doing? And the drivers? Let us know.

I was in Croatia in 2001 and really LOVED it. I am sorry to say I spent time mostly on the coast from Cvatat to Zadar, and only a a few days at Plitvice and Zagreb. I tell myself that someday I'll sit down with my learn-croatian-in-90-days books again and get ready for a new trip there.

p.s.I hope you wouln't mind my bad English, after all I haven't been speaking (or writting) it for sooooooo long

Don't worry about your English, my Croatian really sucks. ;)

hi girls, (or should I say "BOK", cause "dobar dan" is formal way of saying it)

There was recently a question asked on this board about cycling in Croatia and I answered best I could but I'm sure you could do better. How's the cycling scene on your part of the world now? How are the roads doing? And the drivers? Let us know.

I must say it is not so well, because it's rather expensive sport out here, but as my friend often says "the only thing that counts is heart” that means that It doesn’t matter if you’re driving your grandma’s bike or some high-tech miracle, as long as you love it.
It is not so popular in Croatia yet but I can see slow progress in here. Only really bad thing is that very few women drives bicycle longer than half an hour per week. Sadly, but I’m one of the rare ones… I mean there are many women in this sport but on every 15-20 men there comes one woman, so I don’t know any other girl that I could drive with. Perhaps it is cause we don’t have forum like these, and I really don’t like guy’s forum. For me is to boring to talk about bike parts all the time, I enjoy the ride and my boyfriend takes part of other things.

I was in Croatia in 2001 and really LOVED it. I am sorry to say I spent time mostly on the coast from Cvatat to Zadar, and only a a few days at Plitvice and Zagreb.

It’s a pity that you haven’t been hear longer. Croatia is absolute paradise for bikers. In just a 1000 miles (approximately) we have Slavonia – which is flat county with many fields (mainly corn, and sunflowers), than we have Lika – mountain area with several National parks or Nature parks, and Jadran – our beautiful sea (I’ve read that many Tourist agencies in Europe called it top destination for 2006). Everything is so beautiful cause we are not so developed country (which is bad) and we don’t have big towns like you do.

Don't worry about it! That's what's so wonderful about this board and the internet in general. It brings people together that NEVER would have spoken to each other otherwise
your board is great, I’ve discovered it two years ago but I didn’t have my new bike, and haven’t ride the old one so often as now so I felt kind of silly to write about my “experience” But we’ll heard each other more often now :)

ok enough for now, I must rest my fingers now :)

Welcome to the board Ifka - did I understand BOK is the correct "slang" for hi? This is sooo cool having such an international contingent here! As for the measurement conversion - don't worry it hun....we've got miles, kilometers, and sometimes the number of steps walked uphill here, it all works! Congrats on your race win - well done! Hope to hear more from you!

Welcome to the board Ifka - did I understand BOK is the correct "slang" for hi?

yes, you'we got it right. We Croats are 90% Christian people, so long time ago people greet each other with "praised the Jesus and Maria", than they shortened it to "praised the Lord", and after some time it was only "Lord". And the Croatian name for God (Lord) is BOG so jung people now only say BOK (cause it sounds wery much alike), and the old ones still says BOG.
How interesting indeed this intercontinental corresponding is :)
Any more questions :D

Of course, I'll write ... as long as noone asks me anything about bike parts, I know very little in Croatian language, not to mention English. But, I know you'll explain averything to one ignorant like me :) BOK :)

Nope. I don't remember that one. I remember you couldn't keep a secret very well, like your Dad's present ("No, it's not a secret. It's a book." (woops) "No, it's not a book because it's a secret." (too late)) or the chocolate "cake" you made, ate, cleaned up ... and that we'd never have known about if you hadn't taken a picture of it. But I don't remember a lie about a bike accident. I guess you're forgiven.

What's in your stable? My TREK Madone 5.5 (2006) with embellishments

Fastest speed on a road bike? Where? When? (That I can recall/retell.) 24.5 mi/h, yesterday, descent from Skyline Blvd. down Old German Town Road in Portland, OR. The air was chilly, the road was winding, and the experience was quite gripping—like, I think I need new brake pads now!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? uh…technophobe…can’t figure out how to upload it…

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: to myself, that I did not need many friends; I find that I do.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Completing my first MS150 Houston to Austin ride. I was 20. I did it alone. I loved the whole experience. The 90 miles on the first day. Walking up the hill in Bastrop State Park. Getting my achy legs going for the second day of 70 miles. Collapsing to the ground upon arrival at the finish—legs forgot how to stand—was fine—the broad unmoving ground felt quite nice. It was the first time I think I ever actually amazed myself.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Anytime I get out is a fun time. I love each ride’s challenges—the athletic (the pain), the mental (come on…get out there and ride). It is all good. You know?:o

on a group ride, we saw a little fox trotting along the road. it was really surprising to see, even on wi country roads.

Explanation of your avatar: Haven't get that far yet

Age (general or specific): 25

Occupation: Teacher, wanna-be grad student

Favorite bike: I don't know enough about them yet to have a favorite...

What's in your stable? Marinoni 1997 road/tri bike, Kona Fire Mountain hardtail mtb.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 31 or so, down a hill in Colorado, on my mountain bike.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? None!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Honestly... I have no idea. Tend to have a selective memory ;)

Most memorable moment on my bike: flying down some single-track in Colorado Springs without a problem, only to biff it while practically standing still, couldn't get my foot out of the pedal so came crashing down with my bike on top of me, and having to have my ex help me untangle myself from the bike. Still have the "1mph" scars on my elbow...

Most fun ever had on a bike? See above. Laughed so hard I cried...

So, yeah. Joined the boards at Trek420's suggestion. Have ridden mtb's for a while but doing a half-ironman in june, so i figured a road bike and some road bike knowledge would be in order.

Cheers, ladies...

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'll have some updated pix of my bikes on my website very soon.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: no comment :D

Most memorable moment on my bike: probably my very first ride on a bike when I was five years old. I still remember that bike (a candy red CCM s/s),the thrill, and the sense of freedom. I feel the same way every time I strap on a bike and go riding.

Most fun ever had on a bike? No one experience stands out. Exploring new trails and discovering new places to ride rate highly on the fun meter.

Thanx for the welcome! I'm glad there are other vintage bike fans here!
Steel is real for me...aluminum is for beverage containers...preferrably for beverages of 5% or stronger :D
My cats follow me around LIKE dogs! Especially if there's the slightest chance I might be going in the direction of the kitchen. Kinda like my ex-husband LOL!
Ciao,

*bows head and mumbles*........ok...one of my vintage bikes is alum but the other one is steel. The steel one has the bigger tires so I use that one for winter commutes but I do agree - I Love steel frames better. Loved the line about the ex btw - although that boy never followed me Anywhere - could be yet another reason he's an ex! :D

Explanation of your handle: Do you really need one?

Explanation of your avator: My new road bike

Age (general or specific): 28

Occupation: Research Associate

Favorite bike: '05 Specialized Roubaix Elite

What's in your stable? 05 Specialized Roubaix Elite road bike, Trek 6000(?) MTB

Fastest speed on a road bike? 26mi/hr this weekend. Don't remember where. I think somewhere around Sand hill road or Canada road.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Don't have one

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: not sure

Most memorable moment on my bike: I'm new at this sport so I don't have many memorable moments yet. Finishing my 37 mile bike ride would have to be the best. Before this I had only riden 8 miles with very little climbing. Finishing this was a great accomplishment for me.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Everytime I go down hill! :) I'm still a little cautious on the hills but I see myself really flying down them soon.

Where do you live? Christchurch, New Zealand

Explanation of your handle: It is the same as the one I use on the mtb website I am on in NZ (www.vorb.org.nz). Rubbish handle really, but I couldn't think of anything witty at the time and my partner was busy registering me saying "hurry up, think of a handle"

Explanation of your avator: Oops, haven't got one yet. Might use the latest one of my cat sniffing my camera.

Age (general or specific): 36

Occupation: Technical Officer (Quality Assurance at a large food manufacturer)

Favorite bike: Don't really have one

What's in your stable? An extremely crappy GT Aggressor (which is in bits) and a borrowed 1997 canondale F2000 (affectionately called Red) from my partner.

Fastest speed on a road bike? I'm a mountain biking girl! I have only gone about 54km/hr downhill on a mountain bike. I don't have very good glasses so my eyes water too much. For some reason, I want to see what I am about to hit when going top speed downhill....

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Will look for one shortly

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "honestly sweetie, I don't really mind when you leave the toilet seat up"

Most memorable moment on my bike: Biking the last beautiful 11km stretch of the Queen Charlotte Track in New Zealand with 40 other mountain bikers late last year.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Everytime I go out with my beloved (although I'm still not too keen on biking up hills). ;)

My winter commuter is a 1987 Peugeot Avoraiz that I Love. I rode all of my "firsts" on that awesome bike and wouldn't ever give it up. I have since been lucky enough to get a 1989 Trek 1100 which is faster and smaller (better for me) and I've done most of my 2005 miles on that one. One of these days I "might" look into actually getting a new bike, but it won't be any time soon!

Explanation of your handle: A close friend of mine reminds me on a regular basis that whatever I do, do it joyfully....
Explanation of your avatar: ummmm...where do you get those, anyway?

Age (general or specific) 35 (soon to be 36 in April)

Occupation: Homeschooling mom to three children, wife, and Ringmaster of the circus..

Favorite bike: my trusty, old Giant Mountain Bike that has recently died..WWAAAAHHHHH!!!!

What's in your stable? Acutally, one is on the way.. A Raliegh Grand Sport..
I wanted to just get a newer version of my Giant, but every bike shop in town keeps telling me that I really don't want to do a tri with a mountain bike...

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I have no idea... I imagine I will hit a pretty good speed sometime this week:D
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I will put a pic up when I finsish my tri... promise!!!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Well, uuummmm.... You guys are great, but some things are best told to a priest, therapist, or a VERY closemouthed, trustworthy friend.

Most memorable moment on my bike:I used to live in Augusta, Georgia. My neighbor and I went on a sixty-mile bike up the Savannah river, into the north end of Columbia county, and then headed back to downtown Augusta, which is where we lived. It was a perfect day, and the ride was easy, with not one single crazy driver. I loved it..

Most fun ever had on a bike? Okay, this may be telling... Last year, I was riding through town. I took a back road to avoid traffic, and this guy saw me, and stood out in the middle of the road, trying to make me stop. Normally , I am very timid and would have just turned around. Instead, I sped up, looked at him dead in the eye, and said," Don't make me run over you." He stepped aside...It was great!!! ( Does that make me warped?)

What's in your stable? Aforementioned Surly. A Cervelo One that I really need to sell now that I have realized that I will never have enough time to train for triathlons for this bike to make a difference and also to pay for the latest acquisition - De Vinci Dragonfly. I also have a couple of commuter specials (one Walmart special and one decentish Giant) that I acquired pre-Surly and haven't touched since that I really should do something about.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 60+km/hr down the Don Valley (okay so that's cheating) during a charity ride. Fastest speed self-powered is about 35km/hr during Triathlon.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't have any.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: When I told my friend I wouldn't buy another bike until I got rid of a few of the old ones...

Most memorable moment on my bike: Trying to figure out clipless pedals while riding around in circles on the grass in a local park...that or insisting that the training wheels come off my bike when I was six and riding that little red bike up and down the street by myself until I figured out how to balance.

Welcome one and all - how fun is this???

Tamara: hope we didn't scare ya too bad but where else can you come and tell someone you crashed and the first thing you checked was your bike - and they understand!! lol nice stable there btw my friend but I gotta ask - why do you want the Terry over the Fuji??

Mel: your fastest speed recorded is your fastest speed recorded my friend - the longer and steeper the descent - the faster the speed!! LOL (don't tell anyone in the states KM and see the look on their faces!!) ;)

Amc: so you're a belly dancer in a cat house?? how do I get a job like that?? (hopes amc knows I'm just kidding but that was just too good to resist!) Got several Giant riders here - but the Trek riders are Still going to take over the world! (insert evil cackle here)

CorsairMac: I love my Fuji, it's great! But I bought it with NO knowledge of bikes, and no research, but my brother-in-law recommended it (in our price range). I just wonder if a more women's specific design would make me faster. :) But since the Fuji only has 300 miles on it, it's going to be awhile before I can look at anything else, anyway.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Its not that far - you can do it!

Most memorable moment on my bike: I had just got my first road bike and the Cinderella ride was in two days. My husband, son, and friend, talked me into doing the ride. I was still learning how to shift and clip in and out the day of the ride. My son told me I would have 63 miles to practice shifting etc. I finished the ride - even though it took me all day to do. I was exhausted, but it was the most fun I had ever had! I was hooked.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Really enjoyed a ride I did last spring - Paso Robles to Cambria, CA on the coast. It was a beautiful day and the completion of a 5 day bike trip. The longest I had ever traveled on a bike.
