Explanation of your avatar: First tri ever. Aptly named the Beaver Freezer. You can't see in the pic but I'm grinning like a fool! I had sooooooooo much fun!!!

Age (general or specific) 34 (I think...I lose track anymore)

Occupation: Work for the Feds in the natural resources arena.

Favorite bike: YES!!! Oh, we have to pick one?? So many bikes to love....

What's in your stable? An aging QH mare and a pregnant morgan mare....oh, bike stable....:D Sprocket: Trek 1000 Aluminum Dash: Scott CR1 all carbon (geek out!! even the crank, water bottle cages and frame pump are carbon!!) Rowdy: Specialized Rock Hopper with Rock Shox x-country Judy shocks (then there's my husband's poor lonely stumpjumper who just hangs around wishing someone would play with him :()

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 47.7 MPH, last Sunday...somewhere out there.....I was watching the road not the cyclometer!!!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Ummm, I think I've exhausted my catalog of photos here on the computer....have to search for more....

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "Seriously, it's only five or ten more miles to the car"

Most memorable moment on my bike: MOST memorable??? Hmmmm, there was the time I was riding up a steep short hill with a VERY narrow shoulder and lots of cars whizzing by....all of a sudden my whole handlebar came off the bike in my hands!!!

Most fun ever had on a bike? The first time I ever learned what a pace line was for and could do for me. I had a BLAST!!!!!

Real name: Kirsten
Where do you live? Anchorage, Alaska

Explanation of your handle: I picked up the nickname Twerp in middle school. At the time I was playing point guard on our basketball team - not exactly the tallest player on the court. The name stuck (as did the height) - but I kinda like both.

Explanation of your avatar: uhm... yeah... gotta get one of those.

Age (general or specific) 37, 38 July 5th

Occupation: Teacher

Favorite bike: My 2 week old Orbea Onyx Dama. Or my friends Specialized. Or my old mountain bike. Or maybe that red ten speed I had in high school.
Or....

What's in your stable? Orbea formerly mentioned, Novara Bonita Mountain Bike

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? hmm... not sure on this one.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't mind pics, I just don't ever seem to collect them of myself. I should start doing that.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I've never told a lie in my life. (except that one).

Most memorable moment on my bike: I did a solo bike trip through New Zealand when I was 18. Lots of good memories from that. I've had too many years off - time to start making a new set of bike memories.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Hard to pin down, but I had a blast on a single track last summer. Chugach mountains in the back. I really don't have skills - even fell going UP hill. But it was all good.

Favorite bike: My brand new Lemond Tourmalet (my first road bike!)

What's in your stable? My Lemond...the only bike I own

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I've only ridden a few times so far it was yesterday at 19.9 mph

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'm working on this

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I wanted to quit my job at a previous car dealer, but wasn't sure I was going to like my new job so I went in and acted VERY sick and told them I had Mono and had to take a month off. Turned out I loved the new job so I finally had to go in and quit.

Most memorable moment on my bike: I don't have many yet...but so far I guess it would be falling off after a newbie group ride last weekend. I did fine until I got to the parking lot and then...oops pedal issues. Head went into a concret light pole (Thank God for helmets!) and bike went into some woman's van!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Again, not much to compare to yet...but I did my first group ride yesterday. We did 21.03 (yes the .03 is important) miles at an average speed of 14.7 mph.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!!

Real name: Tammy

Where do you live? Dallas, TX

Explanation of your avatar: To lazy (and not enough time) to put one up.

Age (general or specific) 34

Occupation: Student...but in my spare time for the next 3 months I am a pharmacy tech.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Any moment on my bike is a memorable one. When I crossed the finish line on day 2 of the MS 150 and again when I finished the HHH. DH was in tears both times. The HHH was a ride that I had read about when I first got into cycling and decided then that I wanted to do it.

Most fun ever had on a bike? The HHH. I had trained with a great group of people. We rode 4-5 in a group and were doing pacelines the whole ride. We all started singing during the ride.

Sure, I would love to post a bigger picture of my avatar. I did not make the sculpture, nor did I photograph it. I just came across the picture and thought it was cool.

Real name: Anastasia
Where do you live? Western PA, sorta near Pittsburgh

Explanation of your handle: It's kind of an inside joke. Manymany people ask me if I'm related to Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia. I'm not. I'm not even Russian, or of Russian descent. (I'm also not of Greek descent.) I figured that never stopped me from being a princess though, at least not in my own mind :)

Explanation of your avatar: Missing in action. Hehe. Will add one as soon as I get me+the new bike pics.

Age (general or specific) 31. I'm a Libra and Year of the Dragon.

Occupation: Computer Science Professor

Favorite bike: The Bike Friday I just got :)

What's in your stable? Bike Friday Pocket Llama, in power raspberry :) Also have a Gary Fisher Napa comfort bike from 2002 or 2003.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I've never been on a road bike... ever.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Forthcoming.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: You look like a turtle.

Most memorable moment on my bike: When I was in grad school I shared an office with a student from Algeria. He had never ridden a bike before. He bought a bike from someone who was graduating for all of $20. The bike was a real mess, rust everywhere leaky tires, etc. I pumped up the tires for him (and left my pump in the office for a few weeks), showed him how to adjust the seat, and he taught himself to ride over spring break. When we got back from break, he and I went on a ride on the bike path across the street from us. He rode so slowly I could barely keep my balance! Under 4mph most of the time. Runners were passing us up! But we finished the 2 mile path and made it back. That was the first of many rides together. When people ask what I miss about New Orleans, I always think of that bike path and all the riding I did on it. (Both solo and with friends :) )

Most fun ever had on a bike? When I was a kid I rode with some friends to a park. On the way we passed by this little scrap of yard, which we determined probably did not belong to anyone. It happened to have a wonderful hill on it, as it went down to a storm drain. The hill was perfect. We had almost enough momentum to carry us in a loop back to the top so we could go down over and over :)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 23 MPH, last week, on the road

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Note to self...get picture "looking cool" next to bike. Hmmm...maybe that can solve the avatar issue!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I've never lied. ;)

Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, I'm *very* new to biking, so I don't have many. I'd have to say totally smoking my DH a couple of weeks ago while out biking. That was nice!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Probably getting dear old dad to join me on the bike trail...it was payback for all the hiking he made me do as a kid. ;)

Favourite bike: Electra Townie.

What's in your stable? My favourite bike!

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? You're kidding aren't you? I'm SLOW!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Nope.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I once told a snooty shop assistant that I was married (before I was) just so I could get better attention from her. Snooty.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Besides the first day I rode it home from the shop, it was probably the morning about a month ago. It was a beautiful bright clear blue-skied morning when I left home, but by the time I got two suburbs away, it was foggy. I rode through the autumn leaves into a dense wall of fog. It was beautiful.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Probably the ride I just had, coming home from work. Tonight I discovered a road adjacent to the major road, with hardly any cars using it, and heaps of cyclists. I like to think that the cyclists chased all the cars away. I think I may have giggled for at least 50% of the ride.

Most fun ever had on a bike? The past few weeks with my new bike have been a lot of fun because I'v been learning so much.

callmecrazy
05-24-2008, 12:13 PM
Real name: Abby

Where do you live? Pittsburgh, PA

Explanation of your handle: People often do, in fact, call me "crazy" because of my "far-fetched" ideas (most recently happened last night when I told hubby that I want to do a tri even though I just got on a bike this week for the first time in a decade)

Explanation of your avatar: I'll have to get around to that, but it will likely end up being some combination of myself and my first bike

Age (general or specific): 23

Occupation: Cardiovascular research tech by week, jewelry sales gal by weekend

Favorite bike: only bike, Trek7200

What's in your stable? just my 4 day-old Trek

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I'm such a newbie that I'm almost from the future, but since the supposed steepest street in the world is just down the road (as I just learned on here yesterday), perhaps I will just lift my feet and hold on tight. If I survive it, I'll let you know how fast I went.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'm sure I'll have lots to share later

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: It wasn't my fault.

Most memorable moment on my bike: When I was about 12 I decided to borrow my older brother's mtb, but I had no idea what I was doing and ran myself down a hill and directly into a pine tree as a result, ouch.

Most fun ever had on a bike? An relaxing evening ride around the neighborhood with hubby last week... though hopefully there will be more adventurous fun to come!

Real name: If I were going to tell you that, I'd have used it as part of my username.

Where do you live? South London. No underground, a bit rough, a bit expensive, few tourists, but no risk of flooding because this bit's on the ridge of a hill.

Explanation of your handle: Gowan = daisy, it's a short reach to a music hall song vaguely related to cycling.

Explanation of your avatar: it's similar to the bike I'm working on - a 1967 Hercules

Age (general or specific): Old enough to have learnt from a few mistakes, young enough that I haven't made every mistake yet.

Occupation: 24/7 carer (unpaid)

Favorite bike: A lightweight tourer I had (for commuting) was close to favourite, except for the uncomfortably long reach.

What's in your stable? One bike in pieces at the moment in front of the airing cupbpard. Hope to have it rideable before the end of summer.

Fastest speed on a road bike? Don't know. Too many hills and traffic lights. Probably not very fast.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Not yet

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: It doesn't matter.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Going down Mount Pleasant in v heavy rain and heavy traffic, with the brakes just not working at all.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Possibly the time that the dual carriageway I commuted along was bumper to bumper. Passed every car, bus, and lorry (on one of those shopper bikes with small wheels) and there was nothing they could do.:D

MsTerra
05-25-2008, 03:22 PM
Real name: Terra

Where do you live? metro Boston

Explanation of your handle: Someone has always already taken the username "Terra" by the time I'm registering for a new forum these days, but I find "MsTerra" still works more often than not. In fact, Terra is a nickname that started out as a computer username in college 21 years ago.

Explanation of your avatar: haven't posted one yet - avatars are not my forte

Age (general or specific) early 40s

Occupation: administrative assistant at a well-known local engineering school

Favorite bike: not yet knowledgeable enough to say

What's in your stable? Specialized Sirrus hybrid - I think it's a good starter bike that can be a trusty commuter for a long time, but as I ride more and get better I'll be putting more thought into road bikes....

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I've never had a speedometer/bike computer and will probably resist that trend for a while. I've already been accused of being a geek because I'm reading about cycling and looking at online cycling forums. ;)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Not until my bum gets a little smaller....

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I want to be just like you, R---....

Most memorable moment on my bike: Learning clipless pedals, the Arte Johnson phase. Seems to be a common memorable moment around here. (On the other hand, my rotten husband just started riding clipless today - a few minutes in a parking lot, and then we were off on a ride, and he didn't fall once. B@st*rd...)

Most fun ever had on a bike? When I was cycling a decade ago, I would get up early on Sunday mornings and go out on the local rail trail. It was less congested at those times and I could get up some good speed for nice stretches.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "No, Officer...."

Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding the Trails at Elroy Sparta, wi with my parents. I must have been no older that 6, and they brought the bike trailer along, and my dad put custom hooks on the back to carry my bike on when I was too tired to ride :]

Most fun ever had on a bike? The L.A.T.E Ride in Chicago. It gets better every year. This July will be my 11th time

Another picture of yourself or your ride? new ride - no pics yet. I have mtb pictures I will have to dig out from our honeymoon.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: it doesn't matter, I'm just fine.

Most memorable moment on my bike: the day after a hydraulic break failure in the mountains I was talked into riding again by our entire camping/riding group. I was scared silly. I followed a beginner all day long and reminded her to look up, pedal, relax, and all the other advice I could think of. I said all the things to her that I needed to hear. It got me back on my bike and really helped my own feelings of security. It was a very important day!!

Most fun ever had on a bike? DH and I took my little nephew to Bald head Island. Only bikes and golf carts there. nephew was in a trailer that DH pulled. The little guy kept begging DH and I to race. We were exhausted by the end of the day!!! Our nephew is riding his own bike now, so it's time to take him back!

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y273/natalie5445/bikebike.jpg

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Biggest lie. I got nothin'.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, how about when I didn't lock my bike up properly, I went outside in the morning to find it gone :(:( and then, lo and behold, came home from class that afternoon to find it locked to the same place with a note that said "Sorry, I really needed a ride last night. Put your lock on and I'll take mine off"
The bike fairy, or a surprisingly nice most likely drunk person, visited and taught me to lock up like I should

Most fun ever had on a bike? I was riding home from a bookstore and freakin torrents of rain started falling from the sky. I got home and didn't want to stop riding, so I rode around campus for an hour or so, getting soaked and feeling super awesome.

Most memorable moment on my bike: The first time I got on my bike, I felt like a bad ***, I was riding up and down the road getting use to it and there was a small hill that i went up, when I went to turn around it was too tight and I fell straight over -- I forgot I was clipped in! it was great

A(nother?) picture of yourself or your ride?

the old workhorse (my "very cheap bike" - thanks, mr elliot bay bikes in seattle for your assessment! but you fixed her up, so i forgive you) on a beach in oregon in 2007 (the beach was a bad plan. i squeaked when i pedaled for the next two days):

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c36/_unhurt_/bikes/dg.jpg

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: i need to know what scale we're using here. richter?

Most memorable moment on my bike: crossing the four mile long bridge between washingon state and oregon at astoria in the rush hour, with a side-wind. almost at the top of the high part, about 3.5 miles across, really wishing i had packed less gear for this touring lark, trying to squeeze as far to the right as possible. hit the concrete side of the bridge with my right front pannier, bike threw itself down into traffic, i sprang gazelle-like onto the six inch wide shelf at the side of the road. lots of honking. somehow managed to get bike upright, front pannier rehooked and myself back on bike in about 15 seconds and resume (shaky) progress the rest of the way without causing a massive traffic jam. (there's no footpath or i would have walked the bike over! next time i will wait till 2am or something and cross at my leisure...). that or the time in belfast that 7 year olds threw broken bottles at my head. and hit me. ow.

Most fun ever had on a bike? my first real tour last year, seattle to san francisco (solo & camping). loved (almost) every minute with the possible exception of the bridge thing above. and the up-down-up-down-up AGAIN with a permanent headwind part in north california. highway 1, you may be beautiful, but you are EVIL.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Since this is still fairly new to me, I have lots of memorable moments, every new route, new course, new people to ride with are all awesome.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I went on a ride with 5 other people over Memorial Day weekend and after 5 minutes of pedaling it poured. We rode for another 10 minutes but the rain came down hard and it hurt so we took cover under and waited till it became a drizzle and continued on. The girl who organized the ride felt bad but I had a blast. We dried off in no time.

Explanation of your handle: First initial, middle initial, last name

Explanation of your avatar: I don't have one, but I may throw my bike up there.

Age (general or specific): Twenties

Occupation: Student, teacher at a rehab

Favorite bike: I dunno, I'm a noob. Every time I go to my not-so LBS, I want them all, even the few fixed-gear ones that I would probably kill myself on.

What's in your stable? I just traded-in my mountain bike toward payment on my first road bike. Here's the old one:
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/7885/img2082va1.jpg.
A used 56 cm Giant Chinook, probably from the early 90s. It was nice, but it was horrible for staying with the pack on long and hilly group rides. Pissed me off. Plus, after I arrived all sweaty, the others (looking as fresh as daisies) would ask me how my knobby tires were working for me, and if I got enough of a workout. After less than a month, I made the switch.
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/7042/img3569dh8.jpg
The new one is a used 56 cm Raleigh R800 pro, 2000 model. Got an insane deal on it and I'm pretty stoked. There were clipless pedals on it, but they were replaced with "normal" ones. I'm pretty sure I'm going to change the seat; it was painful. The LBS people were telling me about all the other cool stuff on it, but since I had no idea what they were talking about, I was especially impressed with how light it is compared to my old bike. It blew my mind, I didn't know bikes could be that light. And it's really flashy, but I hope I use it to its potential.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? No idea, probably something stupid like 20 mph downhill. But I like to go fast, so we'll see.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? None other than the one above. Plus, I'm a pro at dodging photo ops. I'm always the one behind the camera.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told? I dunno, but there have been some whoppers.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding with a group for the first time was pretty cool.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Getting the hang of clipless pedals on my MTN bike.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: That I rode 50 MPH + in the mountains outside Colorado Springs in the late 80's. Now that I think about it, I'm wondering if I have been exaggerating all these years. I DO recall passing all the cars however!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Sounds cliche, but each ride brings some new memory to my life. I LOVE the feeling after, the challenges during and the interesting things you see and that happen along the way. MOST memorable is the completion of my first (and only) 200 mile ride, virtually non-stop.

Explanation of your handle: Those are my initials, and "aer" in ancient Greek means "air, mist, vapor". For Anaximines, it was the essential element of the universe that dispersed or compressed made up all things. Cool! (See "occupation" for explanation of why I would think that is cool.)

Explanation of your avatar: That sounds technical. Maybe I will get one of my students to get me one.

Age (general or specific) 32

Occupation: Teacher (Classics, Philosophy) and coach

Favorite bike: I don't want to play favorites, it might hurt their feelings.

What's in your stable? Trek 6500, IF Steel Deluxe

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Currently I do not have a road bike.

Another picture of yourself or your ride?

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm not scared!

Most memorable moment on my bike: When I was in college, I rode my bike to our practice fields every weekday. It was a straight road through a valley, one mile downhill and one mile up, always a little breezy despite being closed in by old sugar maple trees. I loved watching the trees change as the seasons passed. Those daily (short) rides were not challenging or anything, they just made a lasting impression of that time in my life.

Most fun ever had on a bike? About 10 years ago I rode with a group of 9th graders near Bravard, NC - super fun climbs over big boulder-like slabs, nice weather, downhill singletrack that was just challenging enough (i.e. pretty easy). Since there was a more experienced guide, my only job was to make sure the kids had fun and enjoy the day! Nice. That was a fun place to ride, and a fun place to introduce some kids to biking in the woods.:)

Where do you live? suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland

Explanation of your handle: My initials. Original, huh?

Explanation of your avatar: It's a picture of Altun Ha, some Mayan ruins in Belize. It was the only picture on my harddrive at work that WASN'T my kids.

Age (general or specific) 39

Occupation: Grants office coordinator at a college

Favorite bike: I'm sure there are many nicer ones out there that I'd love just as much, but I have a long term, stable and faithful relationship with my Miyata 600 touring bike.

What's in your stable? Just the Miyata. I shopped around for a newer/better bike for a couple of months, looking for a good commuter, and I kept coming back to touring bikes. So instead of spending a lot of money on something new, I spent a little money to get the Miyata back on the road.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 53 m.p.h. going down a long strait stretch with a respectable grade in the pouring rain with my bike fully loaded for long distance traveling. This was in northern Italy 17 years ago and even at the time it scared me when I realized that the speed wasn't really a problem, but stopping might be. I don't think I'd attempt that these days!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? The original catalog page for my bike. Not much has changed since I bought her, except new handlebars and tires: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Sarahfran/Miyata600GT.jpg

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: The biggest? I can't remember. I tend to stick to small lies. The lie I really remember is telling my mother that I was starring in a class play when I was in second grade. There was no play and if there had been I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten a lead role. I don't know why this one continues to haunt me.

Most memorable moment on my bike: This is a silly one, but there's one hill near where my parents live that was always my nemesis, starting from when I was nine years old and allowed to venture out of my immediate neighborhood. I couldn't get up this hill for anything, not in my first heavy single speed bike or in my next fancy ten speed or in my Miyata when I was training to go touring. I'd always end up walking. Then I spent most of 12 months touring and the day after I got back I woke up early (jet lag) and went out on my bike to make sure it survived the flight home. And I got up the hill without even slowing down.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Can I count every day I was touring? Every morning I'd wake up and think that there was nothing else in the world I'd rather be doing right then. Second most fun was teaching my daughter to ride.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Nothing comes to mind, really. Oh, wait. One day walking home from elementary school two boys decided to have a jumping contest out of the tree in my front yard. It got to my friend's turn and he immediately grabbed his arm and started screaming when he hit the ground. He went running home and when I walked inside my mom asked why he was crying. I just said "I don't know" and went to my room. The next day he came in with a broken wrist and when the teacher asked how he did it, he just said "I tripped and fell on the sidewalk" and gave me a look like "I'm not telling, either". I always felt bad about that.

Most memorable moment on my bike: I think it's yet to come, we're looking at biking in Tuscany next year:) So far, finishing my first metric was very cool, I never knew I could push myself like that.

Most fun ever had on a bike? When I used to ride my mountain bike, it was always enjoyable getting all mucked up. I never worried about speed or cadence, it was just fun playing on the trails. On the roadie, I've greatly enjoyed exploring the town I moved to last year. Riding along the water and looking at the gorgeous houses and scenery, and just getting to really enjoy my surroundings and explore is great fun to me.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? not sure, im still pretty slow and don't have a computer, I'll have to ask DH, he'd know!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I don't really remember! Sorry, I'm no fun!

Most memorable moment on my bike: When it all finally clicked, and I enjoyed my bike. It was only a 6 mile ride, but I got bit by the bug that day!

Most fun ever had on a bike? I think last week when we were out on a new trail, totally lost and it started pouring, lightening, thundering. I am usually pretty slow on the mtb but we found some bikers that knew their way and I didn't want to lose them. So I rode my butt off and had so much fun riding in the rain/mud on a technical trail (I know, shouldnt be on the trail in the mud but we didnt know it was going to rain, we were trying to get out!)

Real Name: April

Where do you live? Warren, OH

Explanation of your handle: My gf and I used to use "code names" if we were getting some unwanted male attention. When she called me Mabel, I knew she ("Agnes") needed rescued immediately! And since quite a large number of people over the years have come up with the "original" idea to call me April May, I combined the two. Ironically, my son made up my first screen name, Mabell, without knowing any of this.

Explanation of your avatar: I'm working on it, but even when I make the pixel size small enough, the file size is still too big. I'm going to try to take a picture with the camera set at a lower resolution to see if that helps. Any other advice?

Occupation: Engineer

Favorite bike: Yamaha VMAX, but only as a passenger

What's in your stable? Trek 7300 hybrid; Trek WSD 4.5 road bike (Da*n salesman, there goes the $$$ for my next vacation)

Fastest speed on a road bike? So far only 24.5 on the bike trail. I'm working on that one too.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Sorry, can't share that one or it might get out! Here's a cycling-related lie I told, though. I didn't want my family to know that I met my ex-fiancee at BW3. Instead, my cousin told me to say that we met when I was riding my bike and he stopped to fix my flat tire. Hmmm, now that I'm actually riding a bike, this could really happen... thereby cancelling out the lie?

Most memorable moment on my bike: Nothing really special yet, but one of the bike trails we ride on goes right by a farm. We stopped to take a picture by the pasture with cows in the background when all of a sudden all 50+ of them came running over and lined up right behind us at the fence to be in the picture with us.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I'm still working on this one too. So far, it was our group ride at Peninsula, where we planned to take a train northbound with our bikes, and then get off and ride the bikes back to where we parked. Only as we were about halfway there on the train, it started pouring down rain. We debated just taking the train back, but the rain slowed down and we decided to go for it. I never imagined it would be fun riding in the rain, but even though we were covered with mud when we made it back, we had a blast. Maybe my next bike will be a mountain bike...

I ride this way to the gym 3 days a week. What an inspiration that tour in Holland was!

Hmmm...no edit function so I'll have to re-type. My Madone will have the Ultegra SL after all as the Dura-Ace 7900 gruppo won't be available until March of 2009! I almost just went with the 6.9 WSD but that bike won't be in until March 23, 2009 (yeah, the Trek store was quite specific on the date, lol). I want to ride this Fall, so I'm going with the 5.2 WSD. Welcome all! Hey Cunninhamair, I have a Trek 2.1 WSD too. I got mine this past July. How long have you had yours? I am working on finding a more comfortable saddle for it. I put my old Terry saddle on it when I got it, but it doesn't do as well as I would like with the road bike position. I am trying a Falcon X now, but haven't decided yet. It is my first road bike, and I am loving it! Welcome to the forum.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c151/Badgirl1969/BBweekend9.jpg

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "No honey, I'm fine. Yes I broke the railing on the bridge, but honestly I'm fine...it's just a little blood." It was my first ride with the boys I wasn't about to tell him just how bad I had bit it. Nothing was broke and he already felt horridly guilty for doing as I said and riding ahead and not being there to pick me up when I went down. I got the wind knocked out of me, a few little cuts, bumps and bruises, and bruised pride and my shift indicator broke. But I got up, dusted myself off, checked my bike out, and went on the with ride and caught up with the boys and finished the ride. What he doesn't know won't hurt him...right? :)

Most memorable moment on my bike: Going on the first ride with my now husband. It was a beautiful February day, my new bike and all the new gear. The birds were singing, the sun was shining and we rode 16 miles out to the overlook at the lake and back to town. It was WAY farther than he ever expected us to go on my first ride in 20 years. And he was so proud of me for going that far considering how sick I got about 8 miles into it. His band had played the night before and we'd partied a little harder than we probably should have. But once I worked through the nausea it was all good.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c151/Badgirl1969/BBweekend1.jpg

Most fun ever had on a bike? Sending the hubby to go trail riding with his best friend and decided I didn't have to wait for him to get home before I could go ride, so I packed up my gear and head out. I started sending him picture messages when I was about 13 miles from home and then sent him pictures at different point in the ride where the was a pretty spot or something along the way the that I knew he's see the humor in. He was surprised and excited at the first message, told me how proud of me he was. He enjoyed the other pics as it allowed him to know I was okay and he could take part in my ride and it allowed him to be able to enjoy his ride and not have to worry about me waiting on him and I could enjoy my ride not having to wait on him or worry about slowing him down. I could stop if I wanted to, talk to the goats and cows if I wanted, trudge through hills and if I had set my goal too high, I could say screw it and head home if I wanted (which I didn't). The hubby got back from his ride to find me about a block from home, chatting it up with the neighbor about all the different trails and her riding team, the rides they've gone on lately getting ready for the MS150. I had a blast and he was so proud.

What's in your stable? right now? my mountain bike. i've just put a layaway plan on my 1st road bike. hopefully i can bring her home before Christmas - a Trek 1000 WSD.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? dunno! still need to get a computer and a heart rate monitor

Another picture of yourself or your ride? maybe later, i don't even think i have one

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "where have you been?" "just around" (spent the last hour in the bike store)

Most memorable moment on my bike: when i did 60km on my 1st charity ride a few years ago... looking forward to my 1st century...

Most fun ever had on a bike? every 1st ride of the year after a long and harsh winter

Where do you live? Vancouver, BC Canada

Explanation of your handle: This was something I adopted from my friend and my blog. We love food and one of the reasons why I ride, so I can eat!!! :D

Age (general or specific) 37

Favorite bike: my new ride (Specialized Ruby Elite 2008)

What's in your stable? See above and a tank for grocery shopping.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 45.5 km, riding down the road in Stanley Park just last week. I'm still new to road bikes

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Give me time! I just got the bike a month ago

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm scared of speed. (I just need to get use to it!) LOL

Most memorable moment on my bike: Today I rode with a friend who just came back from a 5 day 800km bike trip. We went around Ft. Langley. I've always bike in the city so it was really nice to get fresh air and no traffic. No stop signs, no cars, no lights. Just our bikes. Oh so sweet, that freedom.

And then, there's always biking in the snow in winter... argh... love and hate at the same time.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I have to say today. Live in the moment.

Real name: Vickie
Where do you live? Capitol Hill, Denver CO

Explanation of your handle: I am a Kentucky grrl at heart, born there, with all my roots and family there since the early 1800s. But I've found myself here in Colorado and love it. My heart's in the green hills and abundant trees back home, though.

Explanation of your avatar: ??

Age (general or specific) 33 big ones

Occupation: Bike assembler and rental/repair specialist at REI.

Favorite bike: I love my bike - a Novara Carema. But it's my first road bike, so I'm sure as I upgrade over the coming years I'll realize what I was missing by having a "starter" bike. Dream bike: Orbea Diva in blue.

What's in your stable? Novara Carema road bike and an old decrepit Specialized Hard Rock (no suspension front or rear) that I got used in college. I still use it to run errands sometimes...I wouldn't be heartbroken if it got stolen.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 36mph a couple of times riding down the hill at the Chatfield Reservoir dam.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Oy. I don't know.

Most memorable moment on my bike: I just got into riding this summer and in August did my first real organized ride - the Venus de Miles 65miler (the only all women's recreational ride in Colorado). It was a big accomplishment for me...I've been trying to get back into shape and set the goal at the beginning of the summer. In the middle is an 8-mile hill climb before turning around and sailing back down Left Hand Canyon...I was slow as hell, but I made it, with tears in my eyes at the top. Riding across the finish line was a great feeling, but getting to the top of the Canyon, with a lot of the women on their way down encouraging me as I trudged up...that was amazing.

Also...last week I was out on a nice fall ride during the week...out alone on the path...and a HUGE coyote ran across about 30 miles in front of me. He stopped and looked at me and went on. He was beautiful.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Nothing specific...just those rides where you feel like your body and your bike are just two pieces of the same machine, and everything is in prime working order. I love that feeling.

Most memorable moment on my bike: The first time I climbed a huge hill about 2 months ago. 1 mile hill that has a 10-16% grade. I was slow and clumsy but I did it...twice!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding across the state of Iowa this past summer.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Not computer savvy enough to load a picture on this thing lol

Most fun ever had on a bike? Every time I fly down a rocky hill or through a rock garden. Talk about exhilaration!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I love you.

Most memorable moment on my bike: The first time I rode a bike in twenty years. I felt like a little girl again.

Real name: Colleen

Where do you live? Menlo Park, CA

Explanation of your handle: My name. I wasn't feeling creative.

Explanation of your avatar: Me at the ocean with my bike when I did an out and back to the beach.

Age (general or specific) 25

Occupation: Graduate student in cancer biology

Favorite bike: I don't know. I have really only ridden the one I have.

What's in your stable? My Specialized Dolce and Marin mountain bike (for the 10 min commute to school). My BF's Specialized Allez and hybrid commuter.

Fastest speed on a road bike? About 45 mph. It was downhill during a ride around Tahoe. The turns were very sweeping on that road, and I was shocked to look down and see that speed. It was fun but probably not very safe. Generally I prefer to only go up to 30ish on a downhill, but around here the hills are often windy roads.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'm feeling too lazy to make the picture small enough for this forum right now.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm not sure. I have a hard time lying. Even stupid little lies. It can be a problem.

Most memorable moment on my bike: The first time I did one of the local climbs. It took me a long time to want to even try, so I stuck to the shorter hills. Then it wasn't so bad after all, but that first time I really, really hated the decent (I used to have trouble switching to my drops=painful braking on that 4 miles down). Now it is my favorite ride.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Biking around Lake Tahoe this summer.

Real name: Susan

Where do you live? In the buckle of the bible belt.

Explanation of your handle: It had been a bad week on the bike with several close calls with cars. I seriously thought about never riding on the road again which I love like nothing else. I was hit by a car in 1995 and since then I have been gun shy. Actually, I am hypervigilant around cars and very careful in choosing my routes, ect. Back to the handle, I think to ride on the road you have to be a kind of road warrior otherwise none of us would do it after a close call or being hit.

Explanation of your avatar: A picture of my 2005 Scott CR1 Pro.

Age (general or specific) 54

Occupation: I took early retirement last year so I don't have one!:D I worked for the state social services agency in the area of disabilities for most of my career.

Favorite bike: Don't tell my Scott, but I have really been enjoying riding my Giant the last couple of days.

What's in your stable? My Scott, the early '90's Giant Cadex which I had used on my trainer but have now fixed up to ride around town and on trails, plus a KHS Urban X that I plan to sale.

Fastest speed on a road bike? 42mph, not too smart but it was fun. I love going fast.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't remember. Really.

Most fun and memorable moment on my bike: This ones easy. I think it was in 2001 I rode Ride for the Roses in Austin, Tx. I was riding alone when behind me I could hear what sounded like a hoard(?) of bees. I knew it was a group coming up fast so I picked up my speed until I was going the same speed as the group (20+) and gradually moved over until I was riding with them. It was the most thrilling and intense experience I have ever had on a bike. We were so tightly packed in that one bad move and it would have been a disaster but I rode with them, in the middle of the pack. Once I couldn't maintain the pace I gradually moved back out. It really was thrilling.

Hi, ladies, may I join you?

Real name: Shiming

Where do you live? Long Island, New York

Explanation of your handle: I have been using this handle at another site. When I decided to register there, an empty soda can was the first thing I saw next to my laptop.

Explanation of your avatar: it's a preview picture taken when I was riding MS-150 on Long Island this September. The photographer charges an arm and a leg for a decent sized one, so this is all I have.

Age (general or specific): half century

Occupation: Patent Agent

Favorite bike: you mean the one I am riding now?

What's in your stable? Trek Pilot 2.1 WSD 2007

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? Does going down hill count? then 35-36 mph. By my own effort, about 22 mph. On Long Island, of course.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I will find one later.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't remember, which means I've either told too many, or I don't lie! (I'll let ya'll pick!)--haha, I copied this one.

Most memorable moment on my bike: My first MS-150 ride in September 2007. At that time, It was 2 weeks short of my 50th birthday. I decide to do something to cerebrate my wonderful, rewarding and exceptional life. I had been inactive and overweight all these years. From Spring 2007, with my kid gone to college, I started working out and riding regularly. I lost 10 pounds from the time I joined gym to finished the MS-150. I was riding a heavy hybrid bike and felt so proud that I finished the entire length without one inch short. I documented the entire process on my blog. It's in Chinese though.

Most fun ever had on a bike? My second MS-150 ride was more like fun than torture. I hooked up with a team of guys and tagged along with them in a pace line.

My next ride: BP MS-150, Houston to Austin, April 2009. Being one of 13000 riders, I managed to register before the registration closed in 7 hours!

Happy riding everyone!

Explanation of your avatar: Its a picture I made on the paint program

Age (general or specific): 18

Occupation: Biotech Lab Aide

Favorite bike: The Felt I want to buy this spring. Its blue and black. FZ2 I think it is.

What's in your stable? Felt FW40 and Raleigh Mojave 3.5

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 49.3 mph on August 30 2008. I was going down a hill by the horse park and there was a strong tailwind. Its right below a canyon and it is always really windy there before 9 am.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't have any pictures of me or my bike on this computer. I guess I should take some.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I told my parents and my soccer coach that I sprained my ankle so I wouldn't have to go to soccer practice once when I was 12. I wanted to go to Weber high's homecoming parade instead so I jumped down the stairs and pretended to sprain my ankle then I limped around half the day. When I went to the parade I had to limp all the way up my street until I got around the corner out of sight of parents so I could run down the street to the parade.

Most memorable moment on my bike: The first time I climbed up the pass in N. Ogden. It was about 40 degrees and raining and I just started up thinking I would barely be able to make it to the first pullout, but I ended up going the whole four miles up. It was cool because I thought it would be a lot harder than it was.

Most fun ever had on a bike? I went mountain biking with my friend and there was a little stream that ran along the trail. I rode to the side of it and she rode through it so her butt got totally covered in mud. We had to ride back through town to get to her house and she looked hilarious with all the mud on her butt. We were laughing so hard that she had to stop and somehow I had spit while laughing and it was blowing across my cheek while I was riding. It was just really funny.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'll get a pic resized and also track down my avatar.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'll have to think about this one.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Pretty much any time I get in the woods on a bike. Staying pretty much 'in the moment' for the majority of a 100 mile mtb race was pretty remarkable (reflecting back to it). For the road bike: the day I saw a bald eagle.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Some of the crazy mtb rides I've has the pleasure to be a part of.

Where do you live? Houston, Texas

Explanation of your handle: It's a name I used in a role-playing game way back in college, and it's something that's followed me since then. You find an "Aiacha" on a board, it's probably me!

Explanation of your avatar: Don't have one yet, but I'll give it thought.

Age (general or specific) 35

Occupation: Staff Land Analyst

Favorite bike: I've only been riding since this January, so my favorite would be the one I own, a Specialized Dolce

What's in your stable? Only the one :)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I think I hit 22 mph on a stretch with a slight downslope at George Bush Park here in Houston

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Very few pictures of me on my bike, save for the one taken by Brightroom at the Tour De Pink, but how about one in the clothing I'm wearing a lot for these two months...renaissance garb:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/Aiacha/Aiacha_coat.jpg

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Um, not a big time lier, but the most recent one is "No, mom, I won't let him move in with me."

Most memorable moment on my bike: As I said, I only started in January, so I've not really had any good memorable moments, but the one I remember clearly is my very first ride. It was the day I brought the bike home, Jan 25, when I went out. It was cold and misty and a little windy. I had just put on a sweatshirt and workout pants and hopped on the bike to try it out, I think it was a total of 6 miles. When I got home all I could think was "I've got to get some padded bike shorts!".

Most fun ever had on a bike? Probably my most recent long ride. First, I covered my furthest distance to date, 45 miles, and I also got to ride with a friend of mine who is far above me in skill and endurance. He really kept me going to finish the ride.

Another picture of yourself or your ride?

What is the biggest lie you’ve ever told? Telling my son that his daughter did clean her plate when the truth was each time he turned his head I was taking the food off my grand daughters plate. It was only a couple of bites.:)

Most memorable moment on my bike: While riding down hill on a bike path my dh was behind me when I heard him say something. As I turned to ask what he had said my bike also turned and I ran into a very big heavy wooden fence. The 1/2 inch bruise on my left thigh where I think the end of my handgrip hit quickly grew into a perfect 6 inch circle that was very memorable for several weeks.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Being invited by my son to go mountain biking with him at Sycamore Canyon and actually being able to keep up with him. Being apart of something he enjoys and spending time with him and my dh was a very special day.

Real Name: Jenny

Where do you live? Brisbane, Australia

Explanation of your handle: I used to really hate pink. But when I went looking for a mountain bike the one that was a great fit for me was pink. It was very nearly the deal-breaker, but I bought it and fell in love with mountain biking. When I went to buy my first dually I rode all sorts of things and the best for me was the Specialized Epic. Needless to say, I also tried the Era (WSD Epic) and when I found it came in pink........ the rest is history!

Explanation of your avatar: Me at the end of my last lap of the Merida 24 Hour race in a team called the MTB Dirt Daisies. I had a daisy on top of my helmet and was smiling fit to burst because the pain in my butt was about to end!:D

Age: 44

Occupation: Engineer

Favorite bike: Not sure yet - something light and fast in a road bike I think - maybe a Pinarello?

What’s in your stable? Way too much...

Nishiki Repco Olympic 12 (my antique road bike sitting on the trainer)
Shogun Ninja (current road bike)
Kona Lisa HT (first hard tail MTB but now on slicks for commuting)
Specialized Era Marathon (dually MTB)
Holstar Roadster (tandem for cycle touring with my daughter and DH)
Plus.... 3x Giants for DH
Plus.... Trek 3700 for daughter

Fastest speed on a road bike? 69km/h down a hill near home - I TRY not to think about how much it would hurt if something broke and I bit the dust at that speed!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Not sure how to get it into the text at the right spot, but below is me smoking home on the last turn of the last lap at the Insomnia 24 Hour - fastest I rode all day/night/day I reckon!

What is the biggest lie you’ve ever told? Struggled with this one - not so much a good liar I guess. But I did sneak my youngest sister into the house when she went out on her 18th birthday and got drunk, put her to bed and told my mum she was "really tired."

Most memorable moment on my bike: Probably the recent 100km challenge ride in Brisbane. They closed the busway and turned it over to 8000-odd cyclists. I was in one of the event sponsor's teams so got to start right up the front. After months on the mountain bike and the tandem, being turned loose on that busway with no traffic lights, on my roadie which felt as light as a feather, and in a howling pack - it was just like FLYING!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Recently we (DH and I) put together two teams for the Insomnia 24 Hour (a local 24 hour MTB race). We had the best time in that race ever! Our teams were great, our support crew were great, and we just partied all day, all night, all day (and rode of course) and never wanted it to end!

Wow - I guess I just looked briefly at your handle when I saw it in other posts and assumed you were in Canada! Duh - should have kept reading I guess! :o

I am really enjoying the TE site, which I found only after I found the link in the email reciept for a purchase of a pink furry toolbag for one of my pink bikes! It's really interesting to see what sort of bikes people elsewhere are riding and how cycling women of all ages are pretty much a crack-up no matter where they live! :D

As to the trails over here - if you're ever in SE Queensland look me up and I will be happy to take you out for some fun. I don't know them all yet (only hit the dirt a little over a year ago) but they sure are fun!

Hey everyone... just found this forum. I like it! I'm from Colorado and have been riding for 18 years(?). I ride both mtn and rd, but partial to mtn. I just got a SS in April and have been riding it ever since. Are there any other ladies from CO on here? That's probably a silly question! How 'bout women from the COS, Pueblo area? Or Denver? I'd love to meet some new grrls to ride with:D.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 32.3 Down Kelly Hill. Thats pretty damn good since I have a triple!

Most memorable moment on my bike: I was riding near my rents house in the country near sunset and a young deer was on the side of the 1 lane road. He couldn't find a place in the barbed wire to escape so he ran alongside me for about 1/4 mile. After that he jumped the fence but continued to run with me for a while. It felt like when I was snorkeling with the dolphins in Hawaii.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Oh man, at my 2nd triathlon there was a mix up and I ended up swimming after everyone EVERYONE else was done. Then, when I got on the bike I had people to pass and pass and pass and pass. Like 100 people at least. It was so awesome that I did my best bike time yet that day, despite the 12 mph headwind for 1/2 of the course.

Most memorable moment on my bike: First group ride. I had been invited by a friend, and showed up to meet a serious group of riders, pulling my mountain bike out of my truck, wearing a t-shirt and converse. I was too embarrased to even leave. When I asked how far they rode and they said "40 miles", I almost threw up. Instead, I went with them. The memorable moment came at the rest stop. When I came out of the restroom, the guys I was riding with applauded, saying it was awesome that I kept up with them, on a bike that weighed 4 times more! :) I've been riding ever since!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Probably the most recent guy I dated for a while. Even though I walk pretty well with my prosthesis, it's far from perfect. I told him I "hurt" my leg skiing :) Yeah right. Fortunately, we didn't go on more than three dates, so he never was the wiser that I was missing my right leg :)

Most memorable moment on my bike: Probably a few weeks ago -- when I tried riding again :) Fell flat on my face. Got to get my balance back again!

Hi Brooke and welcome to TE! Hope you have fun on the bike and on the forum. :)

I'm also anxious to learn about your leg, 'cause I'm aware of someone who lost his leg from the knee down (including the knee) recently who's a big-time cyclist, and he's was pretty desperate about not being able to cycle anymore. I'd love to be able to pass on the information.

But of course there are lots of other topics we should be talking about!

Sure. I was in a car accident around this time last year. Ended up losing my leg, just above the knee, as a result. For me, it seemed a lot easier to ride without my prosthesis, so I don't wear it when I ride -- I had someone made a stronger clip for my left side (the one I had kept popping out), so I can peddle really well now with one leg. The only thing that sucks is that for long rides, I neither have my prosthesis nor crutches, so if I want to pop in somewhere for a snack or a drink, I end up having to do a lot of hopping. Uggh.

I don't have my knee either -- wish I did! I lost mine about an inch and a half above my knee. I'm far from being as good of a rider than I used to be, but I've slowly gotten back to riding in the last couple of months. It's really hard work (peddling with one leg), bit it's awesome to be back out there again!

Hey Brooke, maybe someone could make you a lightweight (titanium?) telescoping or collapsible crutch that you could strap on your top tube, like some people have a frame pump attached there, or on the down tube. ?

beldendd
12-24-2008, 09:48 AM
Yeah, that's totally a good idea. Would need two crutches though -- I don't do well with one -- hahaha, I can hop faster! Going to talk with the guy that redid my pedal clip to see if he could do something there. The collapsable crutches I 've seen though don't get all that small. That's an awesome idea though -- going to look into all of this!! Thanks!!!

Kiwi Stoker
02-22-2009, 11:24 AM
Real name: Aysha

Where do you live? Auckland, NZ

Explanation of your handle: My other significant ride is a tandem, and I'm the stoker

Explanation of your avatar: DH and I zooming along

Age: 31

Occupation: Marketing

Favorite bike: Big Red, our Trek T2000 tandem

What's in your stable? 2008 Ruby Expert, Avanti Blade Elite (hybrid) and the above mentioned tandem (plus DH's bikes)

Fastest speed on a road bike? Where? When?
103km/hr (64 m/hr) down a hill in south Auckland on the tandem in April 08. Silly speed I know but it is a country road with little traffic and good uphill run out and the long wheel base of the tandem makes it very stable (no speed wobbles).

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Nothing recent sorry!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told? Lots of little ones but nothing big.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Not a nice one but flying over the handlebars face first into a speed hump going downhill. I smashed my shoulder joint very badly and now have metal ware. My arm and shoulder are still recorvering 7 months later.

Most fun ever had on a bike: Coming third tandem in a 90km race in which we caught the previous winning tandem (they had a puncture) and held on to them at 45km/hr for 3km before they spat us off and came 2nd. They are a very fast and fit team so just holding their tail for that long was an achievement. It's so fun to go past people downhill on the tandem, especially when we are not pedalling and they are... the look on their faces!

Real name: Patty
Where do you live? Silver Spring, MD (just outside of Washington, DC)

Explanation of your handle: A funky "rap" name that was given to me by a co-worker followed by my basketball jersey number from college.

Explanation of your avatar: What's an avatar?!

Age (general or specific) 43

Occupation: International Programs Specialist

Favorite bike: Don't know yet but I'm doing research because I'm going to buy a new bike - maybe either a Trek Madone or Specialized??

What's in your stable? Trek 2300 (a friend who thought it was too big for her gave it to me...nice friend!)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I've only hit 30 mph on the hills in Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC

Another picture of yourself or your ride? No pics of me...yet

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I don't lie (Ha!)

Most memorable moment on my bike: Not to be too sappy but every moment for me is memorable. I'm a former competitive runner who may not be able to run another mile due to a back bad. So cycling keeps me sane and healthy. I enjoy every moment I'm on the bike. But...have to say that watching the sun rise every morning when I commute to work is really memorable.

Most fun ever had on a bike? It's always fun!!

Kuota Rider
03-02-2009, 06:16 PM
Real name: Karen

Where do you live?:
Clovis, CA

Explanation of your handle:
I ride a Kuota Kebel. Seemed simple enough.

Explanation of your avatar:
I love Tigger...what can I say?

Age (general or specific):
Turned 46 on Jan. 26th!

Occupation:
I am a Retail Clerk, which means I work at a grocery store. I have for 24 years. My current title??? Well that would be anything my boss doesn't want or doesn't have time to do. I guess that would make me an Administrative Asst.

Favorite bike:
If I would have answered this last year it would have been a Bianchi C2C. I'm glad I waited...I now own the above stated Kuota. Looooove it...!!!

What's in your stable?
I may need more space for this one....let me think. There is my husband's old Bianchi (12,000 miles on it), there is my "old" Trek 5200, (I think it had about 400 miles on it), then there is the bike I thought I would ride because it was going to be more comfortable, (we're not even going to discuss that one), and there is my husband's Calfee Tetra Pro and my bike the Kuota Kebel.

Fastest speed on a road bike?:
Somewhere between 32 and 35mph. Downhill and pedaling like crazy.

Another picture of yourself or your ride?:
You don't really want to see that, trust me...

What is the biggest lie you've ever told:
Uh...hmmm...I'll get back to you on that one.

Most memorable moment on my bike: The first time I made it up what we call "Crybaby Hill". It's only about 1/4 mile, but the incline is substantial.

Most fun ever had on a bike?:
Finishing my first metric century ride. That equates to about 62 miles. The ride itself was excrutiating because I had not trained enough for it, but it was a great accomplishment for me.

Real name: Betsy
Where do you live? Atlanta, Georgia

Explanation of your handle: I'm well on the road to losing a lot of weight (62 lbs as of today-hence the skini) and mini refers to my absolutely awesome, loaded British Racing Green Mini Cooper. I bought it as a reward for 50 lbs lost. But hey, this is a bike forum, so my new love is my brand new Canondale rorange Synapse 4!

Explanation of your avatar: No pictures yet, I'm a newbie for road biking. This is a picture of my cat--George--licking his chops over a wayward tree frog.

Age: 52

Occupation: Educational Consultant

Favorite bike: I'd have to say my new Canondale Synapse 4.

What's in your stable? Canondale Synapse 4, Trek 7.5 FX

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? About 25 mph, downhill close to my house (serious braking all the way down). The speed just about scared the life out of me! Remember, I'm a newbie.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? No pictures yet.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I cannot tell a lie.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Memorable only in a harrowing sort of way. Last summer, after only a few weeks back on a bicycle, I was riding the Silver Comet Trail here in metro Atlanta. It's a really cool rails to trails path that gets a lot of use from all sorts of people. However, weekends can be a little challenging for bikers, as there are many skaters, walkers with children, dogs, strollers, etc. I was getting ready to cross a narrow bridge, approaching it with a greatly reduced speed. There was a family with several kids just ahead. I announced my presence loudly and expected mom to make sure the children were safely to one side. At the last second, mom and a toddler darted to the opposite side, leaving about 2 ft of space through which I could navigate. I just knew I was going to hit those people. I slammed on the brakes, wrenched my feet out of the clipless pedals (remember I'm a newbie), and stopped on a dime without crashing into anyone or anything! As I caught my breath and said a prayer of thanks, an obviously very experienced cyclist approached from the other direction and congratulated me with "nice stop, I'm impressed". What could have been a disastrous situation, turned out to be just a little bit of an ego booster. I am now sooo much more careful on that trail and try to ride only on weekdays.

Most fun ever had on a bike? About 10 years ago, I completed a MS 150 on a hybrid bike. I had no idea road bikes would make things just a little easier.

I looked at my last post this morning and thought it sounded a little arrogant. Please, let me clarify.

1. Car purchase was not on a whim. My 15 y/o veh. was on its last legs.
2. I believe in sharing the road (and trails) with everyone and make sure I follow all safety rules.
3. I love my hybrid bike! Cycling (on and off) over the years on my Trek hybrids has given me the confidence to get out and try something a little out of my comfort zone-like road biking. I'd probably try Mtn biking, but I just know I would end up in a hospital somewhere.

It's cold this morning in ATL, but supposed to have '70's by the weekend. Spring's just around the corner.

Favorite bike: I don't know much about them, but I like mine enough...

What's in your stable? Trek 1600 WSD

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 32 going downhill in my neighborhood last summer

Another picture of yourself or your ride? If I figure out how to post pics, I would post one from my triathlon last fall...I was about to topple over but pulled out the save!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: In 5th grade I told my teacher I helped Nintendo come up with ideas for new games. Seriously.

Most memorable moment on my bike: I was leaving my grandmom's driveway last summer and merging onto a busy street. Because I'm still getting used to my stupid clipless pedals I ended up toppling over and smashing into her mailbox. She of course has no clue what I was up against and yells "Don't you know how to ride a bike yet?"

Most fun ever had on a bike? Still waiting for it. I honestly don't like it very much yet (I blame the pedals). But I'm sticking with it!!

I hope you love yours as much as I love mine. I couldn't believe the difference from the Trek to the Kuota. I noticed it the very first time I rode it. I put full Campy componentry on it which is worlds better than Shimano, well at least in my opinion. The shifting is much more precise.
I'm glad you introduced yourself. You don't see too many Kuota riders out there. I think we are sort of an "elite" group. :D Tee hee!!

Take care and don't forget when you unclip from the right side, you had better be leaning to the right!

Yeah, and pizza and francobolli and buon giorno.... etc...:p

Speaking of Italian, a couple of friends of mine went on a road trip to Italy last summer. One of the girls is a reasonably fluent Italian speaker as she's worked and lived in Milan for a while. However, the fluency apparently did not extend to traffic signs as they came to realise. They were driving on some small mountain roads going towards Carrara (?) regularly passing signs reading 'Rallantare'. My 'fluent' friend somehow interpreted this as meaning 'honk', so thus, they went honking down the mountain. Obviosuly, other drivers stared at them clearly thinking they were nuts. As they got back to the hotel, my friend got her dictionary out and eventually realised it meant nothing along the lines of 'honk if you can read this sign'... (Am I right in recalling that it means 'slow down'?)

Most memorable moment on my bike: After my first 10+ mile ride. I was riding on the stock saddle and it wasn't good for me (I didn't realize it then but my sit bones were straddling the sides of it). Combined with the fact that I hadn't been on a bike in years...I literally couldn't walk. The fact that I ever go back on my bike says a lot.

This is one funny story, and yes, you recall correctly - it does mean slow down :)
Welcome to TE!

Djgafi, I noticed that not too many women ride bikes in Italy, that's for sure. When we went to bike shops there, I noticed there were very few bikes made with a woman in mind. However, i noticed that motorists were much nicer to cyclists in the roads at least in Piacenza where we were riding.

This is a very interesting observation.
It depends on the region maybe?
I actually grew up in Italy, in Tuscany - where a whole lot of people ride their bikes. When we were young with my sister we used to go out with big groups of cyclists, most of them were on amateur racing teams, and about half of them were women. Some of those people have turned pro over the years.
Of course there was no 'women-specific' anything in the bike shops at that time, just the team mechanic that would fit you on a bike according to your measurements and riding goals, regardless whether you were a man or a woman. Maybe this is in part due to the roads - some regions have more bike-friendly roads than others. Tuscany, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria and others have great bike routes, to name a few. And drivers are more used to see bicycles everywhere, so they tend to be a tad bit more friendly.

But I too have noticed that in some other regions of Italy you don't see many women cyclists - for example traveling in the southern regions I remember seeing women commuters but very few women training or racing. I recall thinking that it seemed weird, especially considering that soccer and cyclism are a national sport in Italy. I mean it's a Country where people close their business to drive somewhere and see a stage of the Giro, public places turn on their TV's for everyone to gather and watch the race, it's like being in France during the Tour. A whole lot of fun, really :)
But that was of course years and years ago, so I'm not sure if it's the same now...

Most memorable moment on my bike: Many years ago when I lived in Taiwan, I used to commute with a Giant road bike. One time a motorscooter passed me with a dangling bungee cord. It hooked on to my front fork and I was being pulled along. As my concern started to rise, all of a sudden it came off and sprung back to the scooter with a loud "BANG". Getting treated by the doctor afterwards was even more fun, and it involved wine as anaesthetic

Real name: Laura

Where do you live? Coastal bedroom community for Silicon Valley (California).

Explanation of your handle: First name + wild card character representing Last name (also a pun on that name).

Explanation of your avatar: None yet.

Age (general or specific): 40something

Occupation: Computer geekette.

Favorite bike: Not enough bikes to have a favorite.

What's in your stable? New Voodoo Sobo XC MTB, 1994 Diamond Back Ascent MTB, 1985 Schwinn World Sport. (My dad's old late-80's 63cm Nishiki is also here - but too big for me.)

What's not in your stable anymore? 1990 Diamond Back Ascent EX MTB (stolen :( ), 1970's Sears heavy steel "10-speed" (worn out and yard saled), mom's 1970's Raleigh 3-spd (yard saled), and a little kid's bike (?).

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? According to the cable driven speedometer on the Sears bike, 40 MPH in a 25 MPH zone coming down a hill while in college. I'm smarter and more cautious now. :p

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Waiting on warmer and drier weather.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: (Sitting here all silent and innocent looking. )

Most memorable moment on my bike: While I was a teenager, city sewers were installed in my neighborhood. All the roads were a mess and the main road was even blocked off. I was riding no handed. Suddenly I saw I was headed right for a big pothole. I leaned forward to grab the bars - but too late. The front wheel went into the hole - I fell off the back of the bike - bounced on my feet leaping forward - landed back on the saddle and kept riding. :D

Most fun ever had on a bike? Hmmm.

I've ridden off and on ever since I was given my first starter bike. The off years were because I either didn't have an appropriate bike, or my bike was broken. While looking for repair information, I found bikeforums.net and eventually joined. I also found this site. I joined to get away from the occasional hostility of the former site.

Explanation of your handle: I like sweet potato pie . . . it was my screenname throughout high school and college. Cheesecake is my favorite desert, but I think that made me sound a little too "snacky"

Fastest speed on a road bike? Fastest time with a record - 30 mph on the flats but with one heck of a tailwind

Most memorable moment on my bike: My husband and I rented road bikes while in Estes Park, Colorado. It was my first time ever on a road bike and we planned to do a relatively easy 10 mile ride. We missed a turn and I found myself flying down a very steep road with major switchbacks - only to find out that I now had to ride up it to get back on track. I had to walk my bike for a portion of it.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Seems to be the latest ride. Probably the last metric ride because everyone in the group stayed together and then went out after. I love the people in our bike group - they are like family.:)
