I had my bike on my roof rack and backed up under an awning at work to unload some helmets. I completely destroyed my frame. I did this one week before I was scheduled to ride in the MS150. I was able to get a lower price replacement frame and build it up Thursday night. I went to the ride on Friday. Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Some of you will find this remarkable, but I just don't know. I like to go fast sometimes, but how fast is anybody's guess.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Why? What have you heard?
Most memorable moment on my bike: Finishing my first metric century. It was the first organized ride I had signed up for and I was planning to just ride the 35-mile route--that was the longest distance I'd ridden until then. But I started out riding next to a woman who said she was doing the metric and her longest training ride had been 25 miles. We were pacing each other pretty well, and I figured if she could do it, I could do it. And I did!!! It wasn't easy, but I was surprised to find how do-able it was.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Flying down the Walnut Street bridge on my little bike as a kid. Oh, you meant since I grew up? OK, then, flying down the hills in Vermont on my last bike tour. Woo-hoo!

Most memorable moment on my bike: I taught myself how to ride a two-wheeler. I'm the youngest of nine and no one had time to teach me. The first time I actually got going down the street I tried to turn and ended up hitting the curb and over the bars! But I DID IT!
Most fun ever had on a bike? "Mountain biking" in the 70's with my brother on our 1950's Schwinn SuperCruises that we bought in a junkyard near my grandmas house in Idaho. We hauled them home to California, stripped and painted them, and off we went. No one in our neighborhood even dreamed of taking their skinny-wheeled ten speeds on the dirt!

Mammogram this week showed "aliens" in both boobies so I may be getting surgery  and then, if I am lucky later on, breast reconstruction with great honkers! :D But after I heal, I'm back in the saddle again...(sounds of western music playing...)

Welcome, welcome,welcome everyone!!! You've found a really great forum :D !
Tanya, where'd you grow up in rural CO? I'm a native Crested Buttian, meself!
Fixedgear, I grew up in Montrose, which isn't really rural itself, but we lived about 30 miles outside of town. At the time, that area was very rural. One way I entertained myself(since there were no kids to play with) was by riding my bike all over the place.
I actually just moved back to Colorado a year ago after being away since Jr. High. I can't wait to get to the Crested Butte area!

hello slinky1-Welcome-as you're in Colorado, do you ski by chance? I only know a few things about colorado-Skiiing and the Sundance Film fest....
I hope you find a bike that you love....!
Hello Crazycanuc, and thank you for the welcome! This site has been a valuable source of info. I am going to have to make a post that thanks everyone for sharing their experiences and advice!
I don't ski. I am, however, learing to snowboard. I moved away from Co. when I was in junior high. It was only years later, as an adult, that I began to experiment with outdoor sports. Now that I am back in Co, I am taking advantage of all it has to offer, including the easy access to snowsports.
The things I know about Colorado? I don't know much other than the fact that there are seemingly endless miles to explore and I intend to see as much as possible, on a bike, in a car, and on my own two feet!

Explanation of your handle: My Mum gave it to me :0)
Explanation of your avatar: This is me at the start of a 2hour+ descent in Switzerland last year.
Age: still in my 30’s but only just!
Occupation: Teaching; Cover supervisor
Favorite bike: mine – Titus loco-moto, it's absolutely tiny and bright pink!
What's in your stable? The titus, a Juliana cushtail and a SS made up of leftovers that looks like a garden gate!
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I hate riding on the road – got about 32mph coming down the ‘no brakes’ trail in Verbier CH – got very scarey! But usually I am very slow, just plodding along enjoying the scenery – taking pictures
Another picture of yourself or your ride?

What is the biggest lie you've ever told:
Um, someone I know thinks I have a degree in English literature – he assumed and I didn’t correct him!
Most memorable moment on my bike:
Probably last year when I plucked up courage to go over a particulary rocky section where I had seen an accident previously – I cleared it, then fell off spectacularly 2 secs later! Also riding in snow (see avatar) I sang jingle bells even though it was August
Most fun ever had on a bike?
The first day of my holiday a couple of years ago with my husband and kids – watching my daughters (8 and 10) clear a trail that I had thought might take all week for them to master. The skies were a beautiful blue and scenery was amazing
Some pics of that holiday are here! ( http://www.doubleard.co.uk/gallery/Verbier2004/)

Age (general or specific): 25
Occupation: Marketing- lost soul
Favorite bike: Not mine! I am eyeing a Cannondale R1000 Women's Specific
What's in your stable? Fuji Finest (entry level), I named her Fiona
Fastest speed on a road bike? Where? When? 47.1 mph coming down Tumbleweed Hill on the Dam Loop in Austin, Texas. It was about two weeks ago. I was praying on that downhill!
Most memorable moment on my bike: The day DH and I rode 50 miles training for the MS150 and were drenched in a cool March rain for the back 20. We were covered in nasty dirt from the road and freezing when we made it home. I was officially declared a cyclist after that (I had only rode about 400 miles total before that day).
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I told my husband I would go Mountain Biking again after cracking my tailbone on a trail about 2 years ago. I got rid of the mountain bike though!
Most fun ever had on a bike? MS150 2005. I never thought I would finish, let alone be hungry for more riding!
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Fiona and myself after completing our first Century last October.

WElcome to the boards ladies!
GM: custom Bill Bryant? Not familiar with that one - where are they built? I'm currently riding vintage bikes but when I decide to bite the bullet and get a new one - I"m seriously thinking custom is the way to go. Especially with Luna Cycles just 55 miles from me.
Polly: I was grinning ear to ear when I saw your name - my mom wanted to name me Polly So Bad she and my dad had a "discussion" over it. My dad won. Is Cannondale your final choice or did you go bike shipping and that was The One?
Agge: nice kit - for an aggie!! Just Kidding ma'am, I'm just north of ya in New Mexico and we Love to tease the Texans! Congrats on your first century and your MS ride!!
Hope to hear more from y'all!!

What a wonderful and friendly place this is! I'm so glad I found it.
crazycanuck: Yep, cycling is the best! So. Cal has lots of hills, but I like to avoid them LOL!! Well, at least you eventually get to the top, but headwinds, that's a different story...
Nina R. Messina: Just sent you a PM; I hope we can meet up sometime!
CorsairMac: I love my Bill Bryant bike. Bill is my bro-in-law and has built custom frames for friends and family mostly. I'm very short-waisted and have a very long inseam, so stock frames never fit and it was always a struggle trying to adjust stem and saddle height to get optimum riding position. At first glance it looks like a Terry cuz it has a 24" front wheel. For me, custom was the way to go. I had to moonlight to pay for it, but well worth the investment! I love vintage bikes too; very cool.
This is me and my Bryant on a recent ride.

Real name: Sue's my middle name - first name I'm the only one, so it’s personal and I only tell people in person
Where do you live? Tricities Washington (Southeast portion of the state, in the desert)
Explanation of your handle: Combo of my real name, but sounds like it's a handle, so still anonymous (or so I tell myself)
Explanation of your avatar: When I get it uploaded, it’ll be a picture of the 3 most important things in my life - my psychotic dog, Murphy (AKA Beelzebub); my Pest of a bird, Pepper (AKA Pepper the Pest), and my Bacchetta Giro
Age (general or specific): Twenty-nineteen going on twenty-twenty
Occupation: Scientist
Favorite bike: My Bacchetta Corsa (SWB recumbent)
What's in your stable? Trek 920 MTB, Bacchetta Corsa, Bacchetta Giro - want a ? road bike.
Fastest speed on a road bike? Where? When? 51.3 mph! downhill (in case you were wondering) down Bombing Range Rd in West Richland, Wa. Never Again.
Most memorable moment on my bike: Try to make it short - bad day, commuting to work, got a flat, 5 am cold out, no tire wrenches. Very nice elderly gentleman came out to help. What a disaster, he kept trying to hold my bike for me when I was trying to get the rear wheel off, then back on… Got going again, but we’d knocked the rear derailleur off-line and I did a header onto the hood of the car stopped at the stoplight to let me go by. Look on the driver’s face was priceless, she clearly didn’t know why I’d viciously attacked her car. Tried to call a friend to pick me up and drive me the rest of the way, then remembered she had a brand new Exterra, and I didn’t want to put my greasy bike in her new car. Started thinking about the old man and how pleasant and friendly he’d been and how nice to talk to, road the next 9 miles into work in perfect sunny day and had one of the best rides of my life - so glad my friend’s car was new, or I would have missed it.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I never lie. I don’t always tell the truth, but I don’t lie.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Recently, the “Cherry of a Ride” in The Dalles, Oregon. Small organized ride in its second year. Friendly people, beautiful scenery, and awesome dried cherries.
Picture of yourself or your ride? I don’t do pictures of myself. Maybe if I ever lose 30 lbs.

I think it was in a thread about stuff found on the side of a road and I admitted I've picked up pristine roadkill for hubby who ties flies. Your hubby admitted that he sometimes had to, er, keep you under control when you spot things.:p Kindred spirits!
Raleighdon provided tons of info about brevets, permanents, etc., last year when I was asking. He's also been trying to coerce us into going to the tandem rallies. We just missed you guys in Bend last summer as we went up for the Cascade Classic just after the Rally. He'll probably remember me as Goldilocks. Something about liking rides that were not too long, not too hilly, but just right.

Too funny about the roadkill! I used to do taxidermy at a local museum and I picked stuff up all the time to take in to work. Usually it was just squirrels and random birds, but the best "score" was a beautiful Snowy Owl that I stuffed. :)

true. I picked up a freshly killed raccoon one morning. My husband had to go to a conference and my sons (who were yard ape size at the time) and i were along for the ride. I picked up the raccoon, dropped off the husband
and went to a kmart and bought a boning knife. I went to a park, where my sons entertained themselves and i skinned out that raccoon on a picnic table.
Since then i have found roadkill birds and taken them to the university's museum where they do feather studies on them.
We still have the raccoon skin, but one of my cats thought it was really funny to attack it's tail, so the tail is much shorter than it used to be.

It was amazing - truly one of those places where antique meets high-tech and they live together very well. Still shows signs of the Communist occupation especially as we got close to the Ukrainian border, but for the most part they've been able to preserve their heritage. It isn't one of those "gosh I can't Wait to get back there" places but it is well worth going to see. And I would in interested to see it again in say 10 yrs.

Welcome to the board LL....hmmm an acronym of your name be LLSD? sry hun ---warped mind here. I Loved your occupation(s?) and your sense of humour comes through on your posts! Hope to hear more from you!

Favorite bike: Love my new 2006 Trek 4500 WSD
What's in your stable? My Trek, my son's Trek 4300 and a couple of Roadmasters that I bought off some guy for $50 each. I call them the Buicks.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Last road bike I had was in high school. It was stolen, like every other bike until now. But that bike saved me from a naked guy who followed me home in his car when I was 16.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't confess it in a public forum. ::blush:::
Most memorable moment on my bike: Yesterday. :) But maybe the naked guy in the car, too.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Last August, 105 degrees in high Arkansas humidity. My 12 yo son and I took off to do a 5 mile singletrack, missed a turn and ended up doing 12 really rugged miles. That's when I knew I could do it.

Lise: I hope you do one day make it to Burning Man - it really is quite an experience. The "playa" is the area where the Man and all the art exhibits are, while Black Rock City is where everyone camps... a little hard to imagine but here's a link to a satellite image: http://www.spaceimaging.com/gallery/ioweek/archive/05-11-06/burning_man_poster_1024.jpg
Let me know if you ever plan to go.... I just may be there too.

Tuckervill: A big TE welcome to you. Having grown up in Hawaii, there's nothing like the sound of an ukulele.

Hi there Lisa,
So nice to see another kiwi chickie around. Oh how i miss the NZ HILLS but not Auckland's weather.
Over here in Perth sweating and sharing the off road paths with the kangaroos (we had one jump accross the path last night...)
What do you mean you don't like hills?? You;re in NZ...make hills your friends...
How was the queen charlotte track? I know it's in the kennett bros book of top nz rides & would love to do it one day.
See ya
Cheryl
Hi there Cheryl. Sorry I didn't reply to this sooner. I am slowly getting used to hills but think it will be a long time before i enjoy biking up them!
The Queen Charlotte track was beautiful. I especially enjoyed the last 11km which was incredibly scenic. All the wekas running around were great. The VORB group bike the queen charlotte every year as a group so if you are interested in having someone else sort out the accommodation, boat trip etc and biking with a great group of people (over 40 people went last year), then check it out on www.vorb.org.nz. It is always organised for late November which is the last weekend before the track is closed to cyclists for the summer to make way for the heavy foot traffic of all the walkers/trampers.
I highly recommend it (especially if you like hills....)
I also should reply to Corsairmac about where Christchurch is in New Zealand. It is about half way down the south island (yes, very imaginatively named islands...). I have just posted another picture of where I went biking over Easter under the international biking forum if you want to look.
Cheers
Lisa

Wow. That's a pretty cool picture. I'm going to do a little more research. I read about Burning Man once, and it's been just an idle dream since then. Perhaps someday a reality! :) L.

The naked guy was kind of scary, actually.
I always rode my bike from the house about 3 miles into town to play tennis with my girlfriends in the summer. (Those were the days...) I always had to be home before my mom got home from work. So I was leaving the park and got out of the traffic onto the two-lane highway, when I noticed this car pass me kind of slow. I watched as he drove ahead about a half mile, and turned at the next road. When I got up to the road, he had turned around and was sitting there idling. After I passed, I could hear him pulling out behind me and following me.
I mostly tried to ignore him, but as he was cruising slowly beside me again I could see his chest, stomach and thighs. Being only 16, I was not interested in seeing anything else! He never waved or said anything...just followed me. After the second time he waited up for me I got his license plate number.
We lived on the highway on a steep short hill. It's the kind of hill that full semi's would really have to gun to get up. Our house was just past the crest, behind the neighbor's driveway on the crest, so you couldn't see our house until you got all the way to the top and were descending. It was a tough hill to climb on a bike, and even tough for those '70s 4-cylinder economy cars, too.
After the last time he passed me and waited up, I knew he would have to go over the hill before he could stop and wait again, so just as he was out of sight over the hill, I poured the coal to it. I don't think I even changed gears what with the adrenaline and all, and I was really cooking by the time I got to the top...but I didn't go all the way over. I pulled into the neighbor's uphill driveway instead, because I knew he would have a ways to go before he found another road. This gave me some cover to peek and see him going down the other side.
When I knew he couldn't possibly see me, I threw the bike behind the pump house and hid, because there was no way I could get in the house without him seeing me. From my hidey-hole I could see him go back and forth in front of my house a couple of times.
It was a panicky feeling, knowing he was waiting for me up ahead, and seeing him going back and forth in front of the house. I remember considering my options while I rode, and thinking of all the people I knew along the highway where I could pull in and take refuge, but I always thought he would just keep going after the last time. He didn't. I shudder to think what might have happened if I had not been on that nice 10-speed bike that my dad won in a talent show.
I never saw him again, so I think he never spotted me hiding behind the pump house, either. From then on, I would ride into town, but wait near my friend's house on the highway for my dad to pick me up in his way home.

Where do you live? Higginsville, Missouri - if it's not the absolute middle of nowhere, you can surely see it from here.
Explanation of your handle: In any given group, I am usually the resident geek - family, work, social, whatever. Inevitably, I'm the geekiest person in the group, and the one most called on to fix things that run on electricity.
Explanation of your avatar: Oh, and I'm a math geek :)
Age (general or specific) 25
Occupation: Computer Support Technican at a community college in Kansas City, Missouri
Favorite bike: One that fits - being short has it's disadvantages.
What's in your stable? A WalMart Special - Roadmaster Mt. Sport SX - it fits and it runs, and that makes me happy
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I've never ridden a road bike before, but I can get up some good speed on my mountain bike on the flats.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? None, currently. I have to get the online photo album back up and running.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: They're not lies... I just stretch the truth :)
Most memorable moment on my bike: I have incredibly short spiky hair, and get mistaken for a guy quite often. Two days after buying my new bike, I was riding down the street and passed this little kid who yelled, "Dad! Dad! He's riding a girl's bike! He's riding a girl's bike!" For some reason, I let him live to be stupid another day.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Pulling the 2-year old in his trailer, going down a hill and hearing, "Whee!"

Explanation of your avatar: I don't yet have an avatar-- computer, deity, or otherwise. If I were computer savvy I would create an icon with closed/slit eyes (trying to keep the wind out), tears draining out the sides (allergies), snot running out my nose (riding and running outdoors just makes me leak all over), and bugs in my teeth--oh and how can we forget the sunglasses/racoon tan lines.
Age (general or specific) 42 and counting
Occupation: In my former life I did psychology research in my present life I am handmaiden to 2 little boys/future riders.
Favorite bike: My almost one year-old, candy apple red Serotta CIII
What's in your stable? aforementioned Serotta CIII, Merz road bike from the 70's outfitted with museumworthy Campy Super Record, Bridgestone MTB 3.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 42 mph--cranking down Cornell Blvd in Portland, OR.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Not yet.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "Yes, mom when we travel together he gets his own room."
Most memorable moment on my bike: I took my new boyfriend (now husband) out on what should have been a 70 mile ride but I took a wrong turn---about 4 or so miles into a fabulous descent I mentioned, "I don't remember this downhill". Immediately after uttering those words-- I realized that we had taken a wrong turn. Oops. We descended another 4 miles or so-scrounged up enough money from our toolkits to purchase one measly stack of fig newtons---and then slogged back uphill. The ride ended up being his first century (110+ miles!)--and the last time I was ever in charge of the ride route.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Years ago I did the last century of a double century ride--with my then boyfriend--on the back of his custom built tandem road bike (yes, he had it built for us--I broke up with him shortly thereafter--but I have always loved that tandem)--we cranked out those miles so fast and furiously---I turned around at one point and saw a peleton of hot young road racers all competing for the privilege of sucking our wheel --I fantasized that they just all wanted to ride behind me--but I know, I know, they really just wanted to ride along in our tremendous draft. Alas.
I was raised in Hawaii, went to college and graduate school in Oregon---where I began riding and riding--and then moved out to far Northern Maine with my husband. I am Asian and it is so white out here (I'm not talking snow)--so we decided to make a few more people of color using tools we had at home. My husband and our two hapa haole (Hawaiian speak for biracial) boys live and ride (and crash!) in the midcoast area of Maine. And I am allergic to lobsters-how sad, eh?

Welcome, Maggie!
What part of Maine did you settle in? I have relatives in Scarborough and my dad is in a VA hospital near Augusta in Togus. I was just there for the first time last October. Beautiful coastline, just awesome! I noticed that too, about the racial one-sidedness, and was slightly disappointed in that. California has EVERYBODY! I'm much more used to that, and prefer the diversity of cultures.
The Merz sounds swwweeet! I like those old frames with the vintage Campy sets on them.

What's in your stable? Fuji Provence, and a Fuji Sagres
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 30.1 down a hill in Bedford MA, woo hoo!
Another picture of yourself or your ride? No pics yet.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Hmmm. Don't lie much which is the truth. I've called in sick before when it was really a mental health day. I guess that counts.
Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, I was just getting to know my sweetie and he took me for a bike ride. We rode about 25 miles which was the longest I had ever gone. At one point, when my energy was flagging, he put his hand on the small of my back and gave me a much needed push. Not only was it helpful, but a surge of electricity went through me. I guess I fell in love on a bicycle, at least in part.
Most fun ever had on a bike? I have fun all the time for different reasons. Sometimes it's fun to ride with my eleven year old daughter. She'll pass me and say catch me. When I do and then pass her she says, "Mommy, I am tired, slow down!" So, I do. She'll change gears for the fun of it petalling 90 mph and then put it in the big ring just to see what happens. All in the life of an eleven year old!:p

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 54 kmh on a back road near Lake Constance, Germany.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: The one I used to tell myself about halfway through every rowing race I did: "you can retire from this sport at the end of this race"
Most memorable moment on my bike: The first time I rode by myself. It would have helped if I had known where the brakes were.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Second time trial I ever did. I hadn´t realised that I could go that fast for an hour, the feeling of actually being in a race was great and I even beat my target time.

Where do you live? Liberty Lake, WA (just east of Spokane, WA, near the WA/ID border)
Explanation of your handle: Colby has been my nickname since my brother (now 13, half my age) was young and couldn't pronounce the "Ni-" syllable in Nicole. Colby is much easier to say in a really whiny voice than Nicole ;)
Explanation of your avatar: It's the Dolby Digital symbol except the first D is reversed to be a C -- Colby Digital. :)
Age (general or specific): 26
Occupation: Technically, my title is Director, Product Management, but I am really just an engineer-type person at a network security software company with lots of extra responsibility. I do love my job, but it keeps me busy.
Favorite bike: I'm a little new to the whole "actually interested in bikes" scene, so I don't have any favorites.
What's in your stable? I just bought a Novara Carema Pro (2006) from REI (of course) a couple of months ago (see her here (http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&productId=47968712&parent_category_rn=40003121)). I also have a cheapie MTB we bought at Costco for $200 just to have something to ride trails and dirt with.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I don't have a magic computer just yet, so I don't really know. When I biked with a friend last, we averaged 12 and ended up going around 25 down a hill, but it is a paved trail so we tried not to go too crazy down hills :)
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Hmm, I don't have any pictures up anywhere.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "It doesn't hurt, really" ;)
Most memorable moment on my bike: I haven't had my new bike very long, but I really enjoy it. Just recently, we were biking a local trail system, and a pair of bikers were right behind myself and a friend. We came up to a hill, one of the guys passed us with a friendly "hello" (so we knew the second would be not far behind). As we separated and went up the hill (she tells me I speed up on hills ;)), I could hear the second guy RIGHT behind me, but the further we went the more ground he lost... so I slowed down to let him pass near the top, and his friendly greeting was more like a pant that resembled "hello" -- his ego might have been bruised, but it was definitely memorable!
Most fun ever had on a bike? The most fun moments are those ones where everything is in synch. You can feel your legs moving in a perfect rhythm, your body moving just right, and your mind clears... everything kind of disappears.
I really enjoyed reading everyone else's introductions, so I didn't think it was fair to not post my own :D

Real name: Liz
Where do you live? Olympic Peninsula, WA State
Explanation of your handle: That old parable about the starfish on the beach is meaningful for me, and helps me remember a lot of the way I want to be in the world.
One day on the beach at low tide after a storm, stretching into the distance, countless starfish were stranded above the water line. A woman slowly walked the beach, tossing each starfish back into the water as she came to it. An observer asked her how she could think it could matter, or make any difference, when she could never reach them all. Her response: "It matters to this one."
Explanation of your avatar: Coming soon!
Age (general or specific): Newly 40!
Occupation: In transition. Soon to be Certified Life Coach.
Favorite bike: The one in my head at any given moment! Current dreams include a custom Seven Axiom, Jett saddle, Salsa bar, in Electric Blueberry and Amber Ale.
What's in your stable? The one bike in my "stable" ;-) is a Specialized Sequoia Elite, which is starting to look pretty weird with recently added aero bars and soon to be added mountain bike cassette and derailleur on the back! Some would say a strange combo.
Fastest speed on a road bike? 42mph... where? Down the Hurricane Ridge Road in Port Angeles... when? Almost every time! I dream of someday having the bike and handling skills to go faster.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I need to get on this.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Any of the ones I told myself while ever dating a man I knew deep down wasn't right for me.
Most memorable moment on my bike: I don't think I could choose, but finishing my first century alone has to be up there.
Most fun ever had on a bike? It would be pretty hard to choose from all the great memories, but strangely enough, what comes to mind is my last ride, a couple days ago. Nothing too special, but I treated myself to a completely flat ride just for fun (flat rides are limited around here), to work on my spin and position on the aero bars, and it was just a blast. Rare warm sunny day without wind. Beautiful view. I felt strong. I live for those days.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Hmmm, will have to think about that one. Probably one told to my kids in good faith. It wasn't about biking though. :)
Most memorable moment on my bike: Haven't had one yet. Oh wait, I rode 50+k last summer when it was over 100 degrees and I had pretty well zero experience.
Most fun ever had on a bike? I'm sorry, I just don't have any good stories yet. :)

Whew * wipes sweat from brow* - I went riding this weekend and the board Exploded!!
so: HOWDY YA"LL!! Welcome to the board, it is truly a most wonderful place! Even tho the # of unread posts keeps getting longer and longer, there isn't any other place I'd rather be and I keep telling ppl about us. It is Exactly where we are meant to be!!
If I miss anyone - please chalk it up to meno-brain and know your post wasn't missed, I just lost track of who went where!
To the person with the 20 yr old Peugeot: which one? My winter commute bike a 1987 Peugeot Avoraiz. It was also the first bike I rode the memorables on: my first 1/2 century, my first metric century and my first imperial century.
To the person getting the prebuilt Luna: Oh yeah?? can you say "envious" boys and girls?.....I Knew you could! Margos' shop is 55 miles away from me in Santa Fe! Enjoy your Luna and know that someone very close to Luna cycles is drooling on her keyboard for you! :D
To the person from the UK: welcome welcome welcome - there are quite a few UK ladies here! Hopefully between the UK and the US we'll take over from the Ozzies/Kiwis! ;)
To the person fromn Maine: LOVE the coastline there, HATE the winters!
To the squirrel dodger: ROFL...I'd forgotten about them after living out here in the southwest. The worse I had to worry about are roadrunners and they just kinda hop/fly out of the way!!!
again welcome all!!

EvilTwin! You must explain the "guy in a chick suit" bidness when you tell us about Brenda! :p
Oh! And I used to live in Albany, OR, and work in Monmouth. I just remember the very tall and deadly devil's club that grows in the forest there. Eeeek!

The guy in a chick suit saying comes from a surgeon I work with a lot. We have similar personalities, in that, I don't always think in the "traditional" girl way. I'm very blunt, not particularly emotional (at least, not at work), I have a warped guylike sense of humor... etc... That's not to say Im' not feminine, I just don't know how to act it all the time. I guess that's a long way of saying I'm a grownup tomboy.

Real name: Cindy (Cynthia if we're signing contracts)
Where do you live? Anchorage, Alaska aka Paradise
Explanation of your handle: Ready for a long story? OK.
Back in high school, I was on Yearbook staff. And the Copy Editor and I did NOT get along. (As Editor in Chief I was his 'boss'.) Anyway, we would taunt one another with various derivations of our first names. He became Sethbian, I became CinderBlock. Cinderly evolved from there.
Explanation of your avatar: I love my cats. No, you don't understand. I LOVE my cats. They are the most spoiled cats west of the Mississippi, if not in the entire Western Hemisphere.
Age (general or specific) I'm turning 30 this November! Woo hoo!
Occupation: Executive Babysitter and Language Geek (more commonly known as Administrative Assistant and Technical Editor)
Favorite bike: Eventually, maybe, something custom. For now, my Rockhopper rocks.
What's in your stable? 2005 Specialized Rockhopper. 15" silver.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Honey, I'm doing good to be moving at all.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Nothing yet.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I told my SO that I was completely out of debt when I still owed almost $10,000 to credit card companies. Somehow, we managed to weather that storm.
Most memorable moment on my bike: It's a tie -- the time I rode 20+ miles without realizing I had done so (I was 14) or the night I got my RH home and was instantly hooked. I look forward to replacing these as I ride more.
Most fun ever had on a bike? I'm still in the very early stages, so just about every moment on a bike is some combination of "This-is-so-cool-OUCH!"

Dang, you're fast, lady! :D
The riding season in Anchorage varies with the rider's tolerance for cold. MY riding season is about the same as my hiking season -- mid-April through mid-October. I know several people who commute by bike year-round.
Despite being a life-long Alaskan, I'm still incredibly cold intolerant, so I picked up a trainer from Craigslist this week. Hopefully, that'll get me through the winter. :)
Thanks for the welcome. I've been lurking here for a few days and have been amazed and heartened by the camraderie and enthusiasm I've seen. TE rocks!
Thanks for the welcome!
In answer to CorsairMac, I´m the Peugeot owner. I´m trying to date it and find out what it was using old catalogues, so I don´t know what model it is yet. Originally an egg-yolk yellow road bike with 10 speeds and alloy wheels; any ideas? I bought it in a pretty battered condition and have ridden it for the last 13 years, so I think it may deserve some restoration while I ride something a bit younger (like the Bianchi I tested this evening......)

Does it have the original components on it? Also, mine has the "name" stamped on one side of the top tube but depending on the year yours may not. You could try looking at the hubs - if they're original, Peugeot used to stamp the month and the year the bike was produced on the hubs. Mine is an 87. I replaced all the cables and housings when I got it, plus new handlebar tape and I switched out the pedals for clipless but I kept the old ones as they were original to the bike. The rest of it is pretty much original and it's a great bike.
There are several vintage riders and vintage bike riders on the board - welcome to the club!!

Welcome to the board everyone! :)
Cinderly, BTW, it's kind of funny and has become a joke now but people mistake me for being Aleutian or some other form of Native American fairly often and I'm Korean. I have one friend who wants me to go with him (he's part cherokee) to a pow-wow and see how long we can fool people. Then there was not only a police officer who grew up in Alaska but also the owner of a local restaurant who have both mistaken me for an Aleutian.
It's quite odd really. :p I'm also told I'd fit in in Hawaii too. :D

Hey, Melody. If it makes you feel any better, a lot of people thought my parents had adopted my younger sister when we brought her home. She can pass for Aleut quite easily if she wants, although the last First Nations blood in our family was many generations ago.
I, on the other hand, am so pale I'm nearly transparent. Aside from skintone, we look very much alike. :D
Apparently, it's pretty common for people to mix up Thai, Korean, and Alaska Native. Go figure.

Hi. I’ve lurked here for a while, occasionally posting, but have never formally introduced myself. I am what I call a ‘lifestyle’ cyclist, been riding bikes all my life (I am 48). My real name is Eileen Lafer. I commute daily on an old terry classic (recently redone with ultegra/XT parts and drop bars), enjoy fast club rides on the weekend on my 2005 terry titanium Isis, and love to tour on vacation. Pix of my bikes can be found on bike journal (http://www.bikejournal.com/profiles.asp?rname=Triskeliongirl). I used to ride a bike friday pocket rocket pro until it was stolen last year :( , and am still friends with many in that community. I toured with Lynette Chiang in Chiapis a few years back (http://www.bikefriday.com/main.cfm?fuseaction=news.article&ID=239&Category=News), and she recently stayed with me on her Texas Tour and followed me to work one day where she made this great movie that tells you about my professional life and also explains my handle (cycling scientist link- http://www.galfromdownunder.com/movies/WEB-tx06-eileen-lafer.mov ). My bikes have weird custom cranksets with dropped pedals to compensate for a 3 cm LLD I was left with after an SUV made an illegal right turn into my hip, but that’s another story for another day. The good news is that with my cool custom cranksets made by Tom Slocum of High Sierra Cycling (http://www.hscycle.com/), I can finally ride again pain free!

Explaination of Handle? My mom is also a cyclist, she finds her comfty zone in cycling in the small ring. One day the going got tough and we had a few miles to go until we got home bound. My mom was ready to throw in the towel and quit. I shifted to the big ring and told her to stop her whining, get on my wheel and ride. As we proceeded pedaling, in the background I heard her yell out "You big ring *****!" My mom and I are good like that, we can joke around. Well, it's one that has stuck!

Most memorable ride: "The shootout" in Tucson, Arizona and making it all the way around! It's a fast, hard ride that alot of pros come out to. They jokingly call it "the world championships". It's a rush!

Hello CorsaiMac,
Yes, I do have some pics I would like to share. One problem...I am not very computer savvy:rolleyes:. I will have to wait for my hubby to get home to help download them. I'll try to schmooze him and see if he will do it tonight:p.
I have to say that I am very lucky. My mom, dad and husband all compete in cycling. I trained my mom last year and she took second in nationals:D! I really do cherish this moment in time. Life is good:)!
I hadn't been by this board for awhile, and whew! There's a small village of new people! Welcome, all!
Cinderly--I have cousins that look nearly Asian , petite, with straight, dark hair, and almond-shaped eyes. Myself, I'm as tall, blonde & blue eyed as they come, and yet...some kids in jr. high called me "Chink". One summer we were at a family reunion in Nova Scotia, where the revered ancestor landed when he left Scotland back in the late 1700s. I showed one of the cousins a picture of a MicMac child in a tourist magazine. The kid's eyes looked just like my cousins'. We got all excited and went to the aunts and uncles, and said, "Look! This is why Laurie and Jeff and Megan and Heather (etc) look like they do! We must have some MicMac in the family!"
No.
We were assured by the next generation up that there were not any Indians in our family. Reeeealllly? Have you looked at your kids lately? Well, we of the cousins generation know the truth! ;) Someone told me recently that being Scottish/Indian would make us McMicMac! By the time that blood got to me, it was well mixed with German, Swedish, Danish, and Welsh.

Favorite bike: My baby blue, 1979 Ross Polo, girl's frame, with sissy handlebars and banana seat. I rode it from ages 6 to almost 13. Nothing will ever compare to that bike and how I felt riding it.
What's in your stable? My month-old Breezer Uptown 8, U frame
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Not sure, but I think I managed like 20-25 mph on a friend's road bike when I was in college in Ann Arbor, MI (the flat part!). I've not owned a road bike.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Not yet
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: After moving to Oregon and about riding: "I'm just going to take the worst of the rainy season off." 7 years later I am finally getting back on a bike.
Most memorable moment on my bike: I'd have to say the day I learned how to ride without training wheels. It took me 2 years to finally get it, even with my mom and dad trying everything they knew. It was so humiliating to not be able to ride a bike at 7 when I could read at 4. It felt like the weight of the world was taken off my shoulders the day I was able to ride with the other kids.
Most fun ever had on a bike? The 10 mile ride from Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Michigan to the nearest town. I was 17 and camping with my childhood best friend who was super athletic. She thought it would be a snap. She was huffing, puffing and swearing all the way there and back, while I found the first physical activity I was actually good at.

What's in your stable? Lemond Buenos Aires 2000 & Gary Fisher Tassajara GS 2004
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I should get the bike computer that has been sitting on my shelf onto the bike, but a bit hesitant that the bike computer will compromise my spiritual connection with the bike and the ride.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Me after a great mtn ride up a valley on the northeast shore of Oahu this Feb - it was muddy! 836
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Too painful to think about!
Most memorable moment on my bike: Waiting at the top of a steep descent on my mountain bike for several minutes, fear-factor-esque, until I convinced myself either I would be fine, or else I would die but it would be worth it.
Most fun ever had on a bike? A long weekend bike/camping trip with my friends in the Fingerlakes - biked up one lake and back down another, and stopped to taste wine every few hours. And any summer road ride on rural Pennsylvanian byways featuring huge hills and a lengthy, greasy lunch stop.

Where do you live? Westford, MA, but I grew up outside Burlington Vermont and that still feels like home too.
Explanation of your handle: My handle is usually ChocolatePizzaRedWine, for the three reasons I started riding, but this board shortened it.
Explanation of your avatar: Haven't found a suitable one yet...
Age (general or specific): 40-something, but I feel 20-something.
Occupation: I teach things... Indoor cycling, water aerobics, children's swim lessons currently.
Favorite bike: My high-end Sequoia Specialized. Very cushy. I'm willing to sacrifice a little speed for comfort.
What's in your stable? See above, plus a Giant MB and a couple of old Trek hand-me-downs from my hubby.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 40mph going down a hill in Harvard MA. I usually "whoop!" when I break the speed limit on my bike, but not that time. I was too scared!
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'll have to figure out how to do that.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "I weigh 129 pounds."
Most memorable moment on my bike: Finishing my first century a month before I turned 40.
Why? When I was young, I was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease called myasthenia gravis. My parents were told that I'd be in a wheelchair by the time I was 25, I wouldn't be able to lift my arms by the time I was 30, and I'd be dead shortly thereafter. Thanks to some medical advances and a lot of luck, I'm not. Riding 100 miles in one day was something I never dreamed I could do. I cried when I crossed the finishline.
Most fun ever had on a bike? It's all fun!

Welcome, all!
Choc/Pizza/R--what a story. Can you imagine the joy you'd bring if you were to show up to say "hi" to the docs who told your parents you'd be gone by now? It is so great to be wrong about something like that. Congratulations on your triumph.
Katie--love the mud! What a great ride.
Brandy--what beautiful pictures of you and your family. In the next year, we'll be seeing shots of you and your husband on bikes! ;)
Glad to have you, and all the other newbies here. It's a fun place.

Explanation of your handle: It's a long story, but on another forum, I was known as GLC (for GuinnessLovinCat) and I wanted to change it to join a more 'health' oriented forum. I picked GirlLovesCycling and it stuck. I shortened it to GLC1968 (my birth year) when I came here.
Explanation of your avatar: Haven't gotten around to adding one yet... Now I have!!! My avitar is a pic of me in my one and only modeling gig. This is the box cover for one of the Nerf Trucks back in the 70's...real high profile, huh?! :p
Age (general or specific) 38
Occupation: RF Engineer
Favorite bike: Haven't found her yet! ;)
What's in your stable? 2004 Fuji Roubaix and a very old Specialized Rock Hopper (1996?)
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 35.7mph...on a long down hill...on a lunch-time ride here in NC.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? OK - this was right after I started riding...a lot of the gear has changed since then...

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I remember lying about having done something bad as a kid and letting my little brother take the blame for it. It was 20 years before I ever admitted to it. It still bothers me to this day, but he's gotten over it (mostly)!
Most memorable moment on my bike: My first ride (on a road bike)...My husband and I went out on a 17 or so mile loop. We live in a hilly area and this route was mostly rolling hills. I was already in great CV shape, so I was able to really crank up the hills and then FLY down them. (I left my husband in the dust) It was so incredibly exhilerating. I was amazed at how much fun a road bike could be...I think I even 'whooped' once or twice on a few downhills. :o
Most fun ever had on a bike? Besides the above ride...on the MS Tour I rode in last year, there was a short while on the second day where my little group of 3 riders was able to jump on the tail of a long line of FAST riders. We were easily pulled along at WAY faster than we had been riding and for a few minutes, it really felt like we were flying! It was a rockin' good time until one of our group broke a spoke and we had to pull over.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I stay safely behind the camera, but thanks for asking.

Hi Dachshund! Like my avatar?!?!!! I, too, am a big fan of the short, smart, speedy, sleek, and loyal pup known as the dachshund! That is not a picture of my own dog, but one that snapdragen found me when I asked for avatar help. I just scanned some pictures of Schatzi, the 3/4 mini, 1/4 standard smooth coat black and tan dachshund, who graced us with her friendship for 19 years. She's with Orphan Annie, our English Setter, who came to us when Schatzi was 9 years old.
Argh--not enough time to fiddle with them this morning, but when I do get time, I'll post the pix. What about your doxies?

Lise,
Absolutely! I noticed that picture right off. I have two, a red smooth named Chili, and a black and tan long-hair named Wilson. They're somewhere between mini and standard in size. They are just the sweetest companions. They're 9 and 7 years old, respectively.
As a joke for my family, I made a website for them, which has some pictures: http://www.chili-wilson.com
Thanks Lise, and everyone! This seems like a great community. Glad I found it.

Sociology...bad choice! :p I ended up going back to school 7 years later to get a degree in Engineering. I'm a math/science geek!
The class I took with him was what they called a Freshman Seminar...only 8 - 12 students. They were on all sorts of topics and were designed to let the freshman have at least one class that was small and more personal (unlike 120 student Psych101). My seminar was called something like Black American History...really interesting class. :)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Will post later.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't remember, which means I've either told too many, or I don't lie! (I'll let ya'll pick!)
Most memorable moment on my bike: There are so many! This year, in late March, my husband and I decided to do a VERY early season attack on the NH notches. Started out coming down Crawford Notch, and then climbed the still seasonally closed Bear Notch. Had to clear some snow patches here, which was quite a challenge. Headed over the Kanc to Franconia Notch - this one involved 5 miles of snow covered bike path! At mile 63, this was not a lot of fun - there was swearing, crying, AND bike throwing! I managed to finish our 80 mile ride though, and was still smiling at the end.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Any time on my bike is a fun time! I use this as a social activity as much as a workout/stress reliever.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told:
Most memorable moment on my bike: I was just starting in cycling as an adult, after many years. I had ridden my bike maybe two or three times. Thsi particular day, I had a vague notion that I should carry some tools. Before I got from the parking lot to the trail, my chain slipped off the hub. I had no notion of what to do, but I looked at it and puzzled it out, and adjusted the derailler. Some guy in the parking lot was really impressed with my mechanical ability. It was a great feeling, to be able to be self-reliant.
Most fun ever had on a bike? As a kid on a 20" bike converted to a bannana seat and hi-rise handlebars, I rode down a staircase of 4 stairs without falling. Jolting, but I felt very accomplished.

Fred: was lol about your chainring tattoo! I have a friend here, not matter what she can't seem to ride even a short distance without marking her calf! She just figures a ride without a chainrign tatt - isn't a ride at all! :p and I LOVE the HP invisiblity cloak!!
Plant: So how do I get to be a slacker?? That is my lifelong dream you know! Your story about fixing your chain brought a smile to my face - isn't it awesome to not only be self-reliant But self-reliant in Front of people! ;)

Most memorable moment on my bike: My most memorable moment on a bike happened a few weeks ago. My husband and I are new to road biking. I would have loved to have biked in the past but I was really out of shape. This past year I have lost 55 pounds and have gotten my life back. So back to the memorable moment...We did a great ride, we went over 40 miles. When we hit that 40 mile mark, I couldn't help but let a tear slide down my face. I have my life back. What a feeling!!!
Most fun ever had on a bike? Every ride is a new adventure!

Real name: Jane
Where do you live? Detroit, Michigan
Explanation of your handle: Well, the "Janey" part is pretty obvious. The 826 is the number of miles I rode in 2005. I was really proud of topping 800 so I thought I would put it into my name. I don't know what I will do if I am able to top 1000 THIS year. Guess we will just have to wait and see........
Explanation of your avatar: Sometimes, when everything is going just right, I feel this fast.
Age (general or specific) 45 but when I am riding I feel 25.
Occupation: Law Enforcement
Favorite bike: What ever bike I am on (normally a Bianchi CDI)
What's in your stable? The CDI and a Trek singletrack for off road.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 43 MPH going down a big hill on decent blacktop near Brighton Michigan, about 3 years ago.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't know how to put any pics in here.....
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't remember. I TRY not to tell them but, well, you know.
Most memorable moment on my bike: I was riding in the city with a friend who was VERY impatient and didn't like to wait for red lights. I refused to go through a red so she waited for me. When the light turned green for us I pushed hard on my pedals. My chain slipped off and I was thrown over the handlebars and onto the road in the middle of a busy intersection. IF I had done that against a red light with 60 MPH traffic coming at us I probably would have had to deal with more that a slight concussion. Everytime I come to a red light I think of that accident so I NEVER ride against red lights.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Just about any time I am riding with a really tight group. I LOVE the feel of being part of something bigger and faster than myself.

Favorite bike: hmmm- those Vanilla Cycles are gorgeous!
What's in your stable? 2005 Giant OCR-3 in blue.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't even have a picture of the bike yet!
Most memorable moment on my bike: I suppose that would be the required "first fall with clipless pedals". I missed with my left foot and my brain forgot to tell my right foot (already clipped in) that it could still pedal and therefore keep me moving so, of course, I went down!
Most fun ever had on a bike? Bike Polo!

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? My husband & I JUST took our bikes out about one week ago. To be honest, I stayed put in a very large parking lot, so I don't have any fast speed to talk about. I am petrified of the crazy traffic in our city -- (more about that later...)

Most fun ever had on a bike? A Cinderella training ride, we did Redwood Road in Castro Valley, CA, seemed like we climbed forever. Hi everyone, I just started road cycling at the beginning of May 2006. I've been a nordic skier for several years, and have enjoyed my one-speed clunky old bike for rides around town. My boyfriend is a sales rep in the bike business and he finally encouraged me to buy a road bike so I can stay in shape during the long stretch between winters, and hopefully improve my ski race times next season.

It varies--sometimes I ride to Bristol (on and off the bike path--never on weekends, though!); Block Island a couple of times in the summer; the Narragansett area (we have a place at Point Judith).
I don't know the Circle A crew--but I DO love their bikes! I frequent the Hub Bicycle shop in Providence and Stedman's in Wakefield. The Hub attracts a combination of roadies, commuters, messengers--very diverse crew.
Where do you ride?
redrhodie
06-05-2006, 05:55 AM
Mostly I ride around Wakefield-Charlestown, Matunuck Schoolhouse Rd is my work commute (lucky me!). Used to ride back and forth on the So County bikepath, but given that up for the less crowded inland roads (Tuckertown, Minesterial, Old Coach Rd, etc). Thinking of riding to Mystic soon, but that would be my longest ride yet. Not sure I want to do it alone, but that's how I generally ride.
Haven't been to "the Hub", but think they're getting a little tired of me at Stedman's. Love that place. They're so nice! I'm still a newbie, always picking their brains for info.
So glad I found this site. You ladies all have such great advice! Reading your posts has helped me so much.

Fastest speed on a road bike? Haven't ridden a road bike since I was in elementary school. (Stopped riding for years, until I was given the above bike back in '98.) But on my current bike, fastest I've done was 27.5 mph, speeding downhill. I'm not quite a turtle, but I'm not a racer. Just slow-to-moderate speeds, steady, I'll get there eventually. I like to look around, see where I'm going, stop now and then to appreciate where I'm riding.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: ???
Most memorable moment on my bike: While doing a bike trip in Ireleand, Ring of Kerry, after a 4.5 mile steady incline that felt like it took several hours to complete, I finally arrived at the top, to see a lovely statue of the BVM. I'm a nice Jewish girl, but I thanked her profusely for any help she may have rendered it getting me up that hill, and for the rest of the day's trip being downhill and/or comparitively flat!
Most fun ever had on a bike? Same trip as above. Despite all the challenges (road conditions, traffic, the need to stop every few hundred yards and just ooh and aah or take a few billion pictures), it was an amazing holiday.
