Occupation: Research Scientist (Materials Science and Engineering)
Favorite bike: Mine.
What's in your stable? Trek 1500 WSD (just bought it in April 06, I love it!)

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: In college I lived with my boyfriend. I told my parents I had a female roommate.
Most memorable moment on my bike: I went out for my first "real" ride on my new bike with two girlfriends, it was a beautiful morning, perfect temperature, nice and quiet, I was cruising along and taking in the view, farms on both sides, green land, perfect blue sky, snow capped peaks to the west. It was just a great "life is good" moment. I love to be outside and I love cycling because its taking me to places I wouldn't otherwise go and allows me to appreciate my surroundings.
Most fun ever had on a bike? A rolling hill ride where I left my husband in the dust.
I just started cycling in April, before that I just casually rode an old mtb around town. I'm addicted now. Funny thing is I started cycling to improve my hiking and now all I do is cycle. I did a search for a saddle problem and came across this wonderful web site. Its full of such great information and looks like such a wonderful community of women cyclists. Its already been so helpful and I look forward to becoming a regular.

Where do you live? West Central Illinois
Age (Generic or Specific)... almost 53 and proud of it!

What's in your stable? I proudly live in a 22 bike home...or is that 23...it's hard to keep count of the ever shifting number. My Significant Other is a competitive Bike racer and builder so we have an assortment of bikes scattered through the house from homebuilts to faired low racers, including a Trek, 2 Catrikes,a Wishbone, a True Grit low racer, a Raleigh road bike, a tandem, assorted fairings, titanium racers, and our pride and joy, Varna II which in two weeks will be competing against the worlds best and fastest at the Nissan Tech Center in Arizona for the Dempsey-MacCready Prize for the first speed bike to travel 56 mph....and a chance at the 25,000 dollar prize! Rob English will be riding for Team Varna II....wish us luck gals.
Fastest Speed on a Road Bike? 34.7 mph...down hill...with a tail wind...leaning foreward...spinning like mad in high gear....where? On a stretch of hilly road near my home...and it's all hilly road near my home...when? Early this spring.
Another picture of yourself ...working on that one, too...
Biggest lie you've ever told? That getting your clip stuck and falling over on asphault at a stop sign really doesn't hurt at all....whimper....
Most memorable moment on your bike? Competing in the Macomb, Il senior olympics this spring with my guy on our tandem and winning the 1k and the 5k race against roadbikes and some really strong riders.

Real name: Susan
Where do you live? Springfield, OR
Explanation of your handle: I collect postage stamps from the Faroe Islands, and I've been using it for my Yahoo handle for years. The stamps are to die for--they are some of the best quality stamps in the world, and sooo gorgeous. OK--guess you have to be a stamp collector. Almost makes me wish I was Faroese! 78 refers to the year of my high school graduation.

Age (general or specific) 46 on June 3rd
Occupation: Registered Nurse
Favorite bike: I like the Trek bikes so far, but Novara makes some nice ones too. And Schwinn has some repros to die for! But as for the Treks, I've been trying out bikes and I have looked at various ones, and I keep coming back to the Treks. I think the Burley runabouts look neat, but they are out of my price league at this time. Maybe some day.....
What's in your stable? I haven't got a bike yet, I'm just starting out, but in 2 weeks I will have a Trek 7.2 FX WSD!
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? not yet!
Another picture of yourself or your ride? As soon as I do, I'll post it on weshots in my album--my webshots handle is shepherdwagen (the name of my VW camper bus.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Lie? What lie? I neeeeever lie! ;^)
Most memorable moment on my bike: Not yet! Most memorable moment so far was the first time I test road a bike a few weeks ago. The shop was right next to the bike path, and I took the bike out a 1/4 mile and came back. I pulled off into the grass and fell over! Glad it was the grass and not the pavement!
Most fun ever had on a bike? Again, not yet! Unless you count the above. It was fun, in a weird way. I've been having fun trying out bikes. I hope the most fun I have on one somehow involves my dog, Abby.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding to work the morning after the '04 election, my ex started to cross the street (he always rode way out infront of me) and he was hit by an SUV right in front of me, was flipped up onto the hood and fell on the other side of the vehicle on his head (thankfully in-helmet). I'm not sure when I actually got off my bike and picked it up, but for some reason, by the time I was actually at the SUV (which stopped) I was carrying my bike and shaking it threateningly. I don't know who was more scared- me, or the driver! (my hubby was alright except for a sprained ankle, btw)
Most fun ever had on a bike? I got on my bike for the first time in 6 months for my birthday, and rode around Brown's Camp in the snow. It was slushy, my asthma wanted to kill me, and it was cold, but it was like visiting Wisconsin for a trip home, so crisp, clean and beautiful. I was thoroughly spattered by dirty snow by the time I was done, and thrilled!

Most fun ever had on a bike: I still have the glow of discovering a new activity that I really like. Every time I make it up a big hill or increase my distance I'm pretty stoked. It's also hard not to have fun cycling on a sunny day up here.

How cool that you were in Chile for a year! I wish they'd sent me for the year program. The three months that I was in Lima, and travelling around, changed my life profoundly. I don't know that I'd be a midwife, working mostly with undocumented immigrants at a public health clinic and speaking Spanish all day if I hadn't lived in Peru. I suspect that Spanish (usually) feels so easy to me because it's "family", not "work".
We had our dachsie, Schatzi, for 19 years! Here are some pictures of her with our English Setter, Annie. I always look for dachshunds when I run a race or do a triathlon. They're a good luck charm! Welcome to the boards.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Any moment from a previous ride that pops into my mind's eye when I'm hunched in front of the computer at work churning out sales reports.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Impossible to answer. Every ride, even the ones when I feel like I may go into cardiac arrest on a hill or when my shins are dripping blood from a crash, is freaking exhilarating.

Here's a TERRIBLE picture of me at my first ever ride back in March. It was a 26 mile ride and I hadn't yet discovered the wonders of moisture-wicking material and using a bike that actually works. That's my beloved Trek 800, which NOW has gears that work and slick tires and all kinds of goodies on it. When I did the ride (and I discovered this AFTER, of course), only 6 of my 21 gears were working and the guys at my LBS were totally amazed I was able to ride as far as I did with only 6 gears (I didn't tell them I spent the next 2 days in bed recovering...but that's a story for another time! :D
Now that I've been riding more and reading wonderful posts from you ultra-knowledgable ladies, I don't feel quite as dumb as I used to...although still a lot to learn....

Hi everyone. I signed up last week and decided to send my info.
Real name: Pat
Where do you live? Baker City, Oregon
Explanation of your handle: Well, I love skiing so I use a handle "d-skier" (downhill skier). But for this forum, I had to grab onto d-Biker...don't know what the "d" can stand for because I freeze up going down steeps on my bike!
Explanation of your avatar: I'll work on that.
Age (general or specific) : born in 1947
Occupation: Medical technologist
Favorite bike: For now, it's the bike I own, my Specialized Sequoia Expert(yeah for Levi on his Specialized!).
What's in your stable? The above mentioned bike and an older Specialized Expedition.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 29 mph downhill, all the time wondering if a deer will jump out or a tire will blow!
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Lots of pics of rides but none with me and my bike. I'll set up the tripod.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't get away with it because my ears turn red so I don't!
Most memorable moment on my bike: It was a 48 mile ride alone on an quiet highway with no traffic and 100F+. I'm an older lady and I was so thrilled to do that! My mind said I couldn't, but I lost track of time and I just cruised along, knowing it was sort of hot and thinking I had plenty of liquid in my pack and on the bike and before I knew it, I had hit the summit where I turned around and returned to the car. I was ecstatic!
Most fun ever had on a bike? The highlight of my cycling life is volunteering every year for the Elkhorn Classic Stage Race here locally. I'm not on a bike but I love helping those riders reach their goals safely on the highways as my car leads them through the countryside. They are my inspiration.
I have a dream : to one day cruise across America on a bicycle (when I don't have to work!)

Most recently, getting 15 or so of my friends to do a birthday ride around Portland, ending up on the top of Rocky Butte for a champaigne picnic and a 280 degree view of the city and the volcanoes. I also tested out my ipod soundsystem for the first time...

Real name: Patty
Where do you live? Wentzville, MO
Explanation of your handle: Cycling has become an obsession!
Explanation of your avatar: Hummmm...I'm going to have to work on getting one.
Age (general or specific) 47 years young
Occupation: Mom to 3 kids - ages 21,19 and 8
Favorite bike: Trek Hybrid 7100 - just got it in March
What's in your stable? my hybrid and hopefully a nice road bike soon!
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? I only ride on a trail near my house, probably 19 or 20 mph.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I need to have one taken
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I learned along time ago that when I lie, I get caught. I'm bad at it, so why bother?
Most memorable moment on my bike: I just started riding, so probably finding out that I could ride 20 miles and not die....
Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding with my friend Sally and all of our kids!
We bought bikes for our family in March - started riding our beautiful Katy Trail State Park, and I've been riding between 20 and 40 miles a week on the trail ever since. I rode a personal best of 36 miles this past Monday. It's really addicting....I only ride the trail, riding roads scares me. Now, I've committed to ride our MS 150 in September. I have lots of questions, and I'm having a difficult time getting good advice from the the 18 year old boys that work in our local bike shop.
I'm 47, and have lost 25 pounds in the past 2 years, with another 15 to go...I have been weight training for over a year and I'm tired of pounding my knees on my treadmill, and want to do more cardio training on my bike. I think I've come to the right place.:)

Real name: Alex
Where do you live? Richmond, VA
Explanation of your handle: It's my first and middle initials plus an extra "p" and my last name. aplegum looks a little odd, so I rounded it out to an actual(ish) word.
Explanation of your avatar: Back when I first made my little online journal thing I photoshopped this picture. I still can't think of anything interesting to use, so it'll do.
Age (general or specific) 16. Well, 17 in a couple weeks. I feel little :( .
Occupation: Student. But I have a new job doing research under the head of the psychiatry department at VCU that I'm ultra-excited about. That doesn't start for another week or so though.
Favorite bike: Anything light and fast.
What's in your stable? OCR 3. It's a mens or "unisex" bike since they came out with the women's version a year after I bought mine. Oh well though, I don't have any complaints about it.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 30 mph last August. I was going down Broad St. (one of the main roads in Richmond that goes pretty much everywhere) crossing from Goochland to my county and hit a huge hill.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? None. And I intend to keep it that way for a while.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: hmm...you'd think I could think of one at my age.
Most memorable moment on my bike: When I was just riding around a nearby street and two ducks were about to cross the street in front of me, but just before I could break or swerve out of the way, the second one grabbed the first one's tail and held it on the sidewalk. That probably put a bigger smile on my face than any feat of speed or distance I've achieved.
Most fun ever had on a bike? The first time I managed to ride from my house down to Cary St. and then back to my friends to finish up the last few miles with her. It's the best route I've got around here even with all the poorly paved one lane roads.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? No pix
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I choose to forget - that way I can always plead ignorance
Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding the 2nd day after getting my new clipless pedals, went out for a LSD ride with a local legend. The company and information gleaned was great. Rode the longest distance I had done to date - 48 miles, and was still able to go home and do a few things. And riding 7.5 miles up the going to the sun hwy (in the rain) it was only open that far due to blasting and snow. Met 3 x-country cyclists, had a visit and went with them for supper
Most fun ever had on a bike? Fun or agony why do some of the hardest moments end up being considered fun. The second day of a supported tour it started to rain for the last 8 miles (real drops, not the weenie misty stuff,) Got in a pace line, a couple of good looking young guys (may be that is why it became fun) started pulling and the speed increased from 14mph to 18 mph. Rolled into town soaking wet but with a great sense of accomplishment

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 38 mph in June 2006 during the Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska. Who knew Nebraska had such hills?
Another picture of yourself or your ride? That would be way too embarrassing.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'll pass on this one.
Most memorable moment on my bike: It would have to be the memorable week I spent riding across my home state of Nebraska in June 2006--464 miles in 7 days. Two days were 80+ miles, 100 degree heat with no shade, 25 mph cross winds. By the last day, I was operating on pure determination but I did it all. It was harder than hiking out of the Grand Canyon.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding the first day of the Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska (see above) with three friends and having my sister and another friend (our RV/private sag support crew) greet us with rum punch and black bean salsa and chips at the end of the day. Most memorable moment on my bike: I've only gone on a few rides so I don't have one yet.

Real name: Something entirely too often butchered and unpronounceable to 98.17% of the English-Speaking world. Sooooo, just call me Aly/Alex/Alessa/Cass/Cassie/Twiggy :)
Where do you live? Albuquerque, New Mexico
Explanation of your handle: My favorite character from a comic series I used to read, and now, sadly defunct :(
Explanation of your avatar: Yes I’d like to get away from the world of taxes, 5-day work weeks, and long lines….so wal-lah, an avatar was born. Oh and it has everything to do with my handle.
Age (general or specific) Something with a 3 in the front of it! :D
Occupation: Human Being – I’m really great at my job you know. ;)
Favorite bike: One of those fancy Cervelo Carbon bikes in the nice red/white/black scheme that the TDF boys ride. Then I’d like bloody fast, even though I’m as slow as a snail. No wait, slower….
What's in your stable? 2006 Trek 1500
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I have no idea - yesterday was my first ride in 6 years.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Sure I have pictures but I’m shy, paranoid, irrational, illogical, and look nothing short of atrocious in spandex - you know, the usual.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Ha! That would involve my sharing the details of every job interview and revealing the answer to the ubiquitous: (you choose) “Why do you want to work for XYZ company?” OR “Tell us your strengths and weaknesses?” (what weaknesses!) :p
Most memorable moment on my bike: Yesterday actually. It was the first time I’d been on a bike in 6 years after a combination of a bad overuse knee injury and an accident. Forget mileage, speed, and bunny hops - I’m happy to just be riding, even if it is a little and very slowly.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding along a 2 mile bridge (closed to cars) in Florida just around sunset. There was a cool breeze percolating along the golden sky, positively basking everything, me included, with an air of sheer bliss. Also riding a century back in 1999, on a big mountain bike – yes it took me many hours, etc, but it was one of those ‘aha’ moments where you actually do more than you thought you could~

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: That I was an expert mountain biker (Actually I am an expert in the eyes of NORBA, but I don't ever think I'll be an "EXPERT" mountain biker!)
Most memorable moment on my bike: There have been so many - but probably winning my first mountain bike race in Arizona. It was early in the race season (February) and I live at 7,000 feet in the snow so I was training on my trainer and in spinning classes only. My competition was all from Phoenix (where they had their best training weather of the year) and I won! I didn't even know I was out front cause we all started in a bigger group so I didn't know I was in front of my age group gals until my friend at the end of the race told me I was 1st. I had been racing one gal for the last lap but dropped her on the last hill. WOW what a surprise!
Most fun ever had on a bike? There have been so many fun times on the bike in the last 20 years that this is a hard pick. Almost every bike ride is fun! except maybe the ones where I crash hard or bonk! Maybe riding in the rain at Lake Chabot, California where we came back so muddy that we all played in the hose before going into the garage to change. Some of it was fun riding, sliding all over the place and some of it was not so fun - getting bogged down in the clay, but all in the all, getting all dirty, sliding around, playing and laughing was a lot of fun!

hey Bikingmom
what's a suede W?
Not the bike I want, but the one I have? I am being snarky today, sorry. When I got this bike, I had been terrified of bikes for 37 years. Now I love biking and want something different, but that will need to wait. Until then, this is my bike. Hope this link works.

Hi all!
Real name: Lucy
Where do you live? Salt Lake City, UT
Explanation of your handle: Just went with my name.
Explanation of your avatar: That is my off the track Thoroughbred (OTTB) I trained and competeted on. He has a great new owner. I ride on lessons horses now, but he'll always be my fav.. Any of my biking pics are not scanned in.
Age (general or specific) 49 --already?
Occupation: Paralegal and equine photographer, on my way to law school so I can afford horses and a NEW bike well and new skis and . . . .
Favorite bike: I still like my stupid old GT, but would like a nice new light weight something or other. On pounding rides in Moab, Cannondales failed, Specialized failed, never saw a GT break down so I became a fan.
What's in your stable? I hate to tell you! It's an ancient GT circa 1994. I have some nice horse equipment though;)
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Road bike? The last road bike I had was my dad's.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'll have to grab a new one now that I have a little digital to take on rides.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I LOVE this poncho.
Most memorable moment on my bike: Being in last place and so hung over in a race at Deer Valley that the guys patrolling asked me if I was o.k. By the time I reached the top I had burned through the rest of the alcohol I guess. I flew on the downhill sections and the other women though I was nuts when I took a jump as I blew by another woman. I wound up 3rd and thought it was sort of fun they thought I was considered nuts. My own cinderella story. Too bad I didn't take first, but from last to third was huge for me.
Most fun ever had on a bike? So many! Love all of the Moab trips I've taken and exploring South Dakota with my husband

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Can't even imagine- too busy trying to stay on to worry about speed. Just started riding again last month. Before that, the last time i was on a bike was as a teenager about 35 years ago(!). I consider myself lucky I haven't fallen yet.

When I actually GET my new bike, I'll take some new bike pix!!
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Sure as heck don't want to discuss it.
Most memorable moment on my bike: When I was a teen on a 10 speed and hit a small rock on the raod shoulder, and flipped horizontal right onto the middle of the lane of the highway- but luckily no cars were coming at that moment. That was SCARY. I quickly rolled over to the shoulder, leaned on my bike and tried to look "normal" while I cried over my bleeding knees. I guess that's my most "memorable" moment- those not the happiest fer shur!
Most fun ever had on a bike? Every single day now since I started riding again last month! Also, planning out all my bike specs with my husband was way too much fun! I'm SO lucky he loves to bike too and he can't wait to go on long rides with me!
Guess that's enough for now... :)

Most memorable moment on my bike: Hubby and I were set to do about 40 miles one Saturday last year. My front brakes were rubbing, and after stopping to adjust them for the 2nd time hubby says, "maybe if you use them once really good they'll be ok." So...I used them once REALLY good and did an endo at about 10 mph. I only ended up doing 23 miles that day and I hurt for the next week!

Chickwhorips: Ok...so maybe it's not too long of a story, but it is stupid..LOL! Back when I got my first computer I was talking to my boss about good names for AIM. He suggested something and the subject came up about oxymorons. So I told him he had to create a "moronman" name and I'd get "oxygirl". Well, I had oxygirl for awhile, but when I got married and we didn't need 2 AOL accounts I gave up the oxygirl name. Now that we don't have AOL anymore I use oxysback because most of the time oxygirl is already taken.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: About biking?? Or life in general? Don't recall telling a bald-faced lie outright. But maybe that's a lie right there! : )
Most memorable moment on my bike: I have a few bad experiences that are pretty memorable -- they usually result in scars or torn clothing. Best moment was not ON my bike, but because of my bike...I met my husband while doing a weekly ride with my LBS. :)

Fastest speed on a road bike? Only about 25 mph. I'm still not very comfortable with hills, up or down.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Will post soon. Having technical difficulties.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Does hiding shopping bags filled with new clothes and shoes from you husband really count as lying?
Most memorable moment on my bike: In June my husband and I took a "cycling vacation" up and down CA. We were on a trail heading to Folsom Dam going up a 7% grade, which was a huge challenge for me (not a climber...yet.) As I was climbing the hill there, were a couple women fixing a flat on the side of the trail and they cheered my on as I was obviously struggling. I later passed them when I was heading back down the hill and nearly got teary eyed as they congratulated me on making it to the top.
Most fun ever had on a bike? On the afore mentioned trip in June, Chris (my husband) and I rode over the Golden Gate Bridge. That day's ride wasn't very long, but we had so much fun just soaking in the beautiful view, meeting new people and trying to avoid the pedestrians.

Thanks CM, I'm doing a commission right now of John Henry, who is 31 and still kicking (yes, pun intended!) He's a feisty old cuss. Even his groom once called him "a mean old man in a horse suit"
Most of my clients are west-coast based so I'm not sure how "famous" horses are. I have no perspective for knowing what horse if known or not known by the general public. As for champions, Derby- and Breeders Cup winners, I have painted Tiznow, Adoration, Fusaichi Pegasus, too many to name. One of my all time favorites was a tiny, 850-lb. mare name Megahertz, aka The Mighty Mite. She'd blow past her opponents in the stretch, her tiny little legs in a blur. Here's what she looks like with a 100-lb. jockey on her back. I shot this photo a few years back, and my portrait of her.

Dr. Liz
08-01-2006, 06:56 PM
Real name: Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Liz, so I’ve just accepted it! ;)
Where do you live? Park City, UT
Explanation of your handle: The spousal unit started calling me Dr. Liz when he first realized that I had a few extra letters stuck on after my name (this was long before we got married), and hasn’t ever stopped. As an aside, with my married name, the Dr. ‘Married Name’ makes me sound like a baddie in a James Bond movie…. :D
Age (general or specific): 35 (when did that happen? Last time I looked I was like 23 or something…)
Occupation: Officially I’m a research associate faculty person. In actually, I am the Queen of Tasks That No One Else Wants to Do. In my Real Life, I’m a wanna-be ski racer. I just started racing Masters a couple of years ago and am having a ball. The spouse convinced me that biking would be good off-season training. (And being me, I’m now thinking triathalons might be sort of fun… )
Favorite bike: At the moment, I’ve only got one – my very first bike (well, first since the Schwinn that I had when I was six that had red and white streamers on the handlebars). It’s a Motobecane that the spouse got for me new on eBay for cheap. It’s actually a really good bike, but a little heavy, so I’m looking into something else.
What's in your stable? The Motobecane, and (as I have just been informed) my husband’s compact frame Guru. The LBS guys are certain I will fit perfectly on the bike, and it will be much lighter. And won’t cost me anything, other than the fitting!
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? When? I’m new to this whole bike thing – I just started two and a half months ago, and speed is not exactly my thing. I think my all time fastest is coming down from Deer Valley into Park City, when I topped out at 34.6 mph. And I was scared to death. I’m sure I’ll get used to this speed thing eventually (especially since the spouse cruises down hills at 45+ mph – but then he raced as a teenager, and has been on and off bikes his entire life). I hope.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: The biggest? Erm. I’m not sure. But the most recent was ‘sorry I didn’t respond to your email, I’ve been swamped with work’ (when, in fact, I skipped out to go for a bike ride…the same lie works equally well when ski season rolls around).
Most memorable moment on my bike: The first time I came to an intersection and was able to actually clip out of the pedals confidently, and come to a stop without falling over. Since I had had MANY failed attempts (and luckily very many understanding people in cars who didn’t run over the chick who just ended up on the ground…), it was thrilling!
Most fun ever had on a bike? It’s hard to say. I’ve had a lot of nice rides that go through some really pretty (although really hilly) alpine areas. I live in such a beautiful spot that every ride that doesn’t involve idiots on the road is a fun one!
Oh, and pictures? This was taken on one of our local hill climbs by DH. The clothes are an eBay special, and quite comfortable! The bike is the Motobecane.
http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/1152/liz1zh5.jpg
BTW, thanks for all your great tips! The DH has been riding forever, and doesn't seem to quite understand some of the 'issues' that the new, female rider experiences. You guys (in the general, gender-neutral sense, of course!) are fantastic!!!! Thanks!!!
(I keep editing this as I update my profile...) The avatar is from a race at Grand Targhee last year. Yes, that is a knee brace on my leg (ACL replacement 2 years ago after going 10 years without an ACL).... And the 'Powered by Rossignol' thing is a tribute to my main ski racing sponsor - Rossignol has been extremely generous to me (mostly because of the efforts of the spouse), and I like to give them credit whenever possible.

Heh. Actually, the color coordination wasn't totally planned, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a consideration! The bummer is that I'll be inheriting my spouse's Guru in about 3 weeks, and it is mostly blue, with a little red and white, so I'm going to have to totally re-coordinate my wardrobe! :p
Actually, I shouldn't say that getting DH's Guru is a bummer. I just spent 2 hours getting a professional fit (because DH is gettting a custom built Seven, poor man! ), and I'm actually going to have a bike that fits me. Which should make a big difference, I'm hoping!
And yup, telemark skiing is the phrase. I tried it many years ago and discovered that I wasn't coordinated enough to have my heel free. I definitely need my feet locked in! :o

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Yeah, I've been buying a lot of cycling stuff but it was all on clearance plus I had a coupon! ;)
Most memorable moment on my bike: Finding a neighhborhood with lots of small, steep (for here) hills and not having to walk up them. And riding along

Most fun ever had on a bike? When I was in high school, I got to go on a weeklong supported bicycling trip. Lots of big hills and a bear or two thrown in for a little excitment.

Welcome one and all!!
Gozlin: yeah I had one of the cyclocomputers too - one day it told me I was going 75 mph leaning against the wall at a hardware store! (don't think I didn't think - for just a brief moment there - of posting that as my max sp on BJ LOL)....so do you belong to Team Estrogen over on BJ??...we would LOVE to have your miles if you don't!! (wink wink nod nod) and goodonya for the commuting, it's how I got back into cyclinb too....and now I wouldn't give it up for all the cold days in my state! ;)
Play: how old are your girls? I bet it would be exciting watching them finish a race!
Fit: I'll be the ride in France was gorgous. Isn't Provence some of the lavender comes from??

Where do you live? near Trenton, NJ
Explanation of your handle: I play Hurling, an Irish field sport.
Explanation of your avatar: Female Troll from World of Warcraft, the MMO which has sucked me in and won't let me go.
Age (general or specific) 35
Occupation: Land preservation
Favorite bike: My current road bike. Love it. Don't want anything else.
What's in your stable? Trek 5200 WSD (2003); GT Tempest mountain bike (circa 1995); an ancient Schwinn Racer with vintage 70's yellow smiley-face stickers all over the frame and fenders
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I hit 40mph downhill once. I've managed 32mph in pacelines. I've hit 30mph on a hard solo effort. All of the above were either last year or the year before, just on local group rides or my rides with my husband.
My highest average speed (with a group) was 21mph, but I kinda injured myself on that one. That was in 2000, when I showed up for a group ride that was advertised as a B ride - which means 17-18mph average. I was the only girl and was determined to show the boys I could ride. After the first hour, I checked the average speed and realized I wasn't going to be able to finish the ride without a big, ugly breakdown so I turned off on a road I recognized and headed for home. My husband got home a short while after I did, and asked where his truck was. I told him it was back at the park where the ride started, and we had to go retrieve it. I needed physical therapy because I did damage to my hamstring during that ride.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'll try to get one uploaded.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I suck at lying, but mostly I do the "little white lies" or "careful ommissions". Can't say I've ever told a doozie.
Most memorable moment on my bike: My first "hill ride" - I was going so slowly at one point my computer actually read 0mph. I was passed by a runner.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Couple of summers ago, we had some friends over for dinner and then went to the July fireworks show in town, but took our bikes to avoid the traffic gridlock that follows the show. We had some wine with dinner, and then filled the waterbottles on the bikes with wine as well. So after the fireworks were over we were all a little tipsy, but we were moving and everyone in their cars were stuck. My friend had a bell on her old Schwinn, and kept ringing it and ringing it. Probably not the smartest move, but definitely fun!

Hi All --
I just joined this discussion forum -- it's WONDERFUL. I noticed that there are some persons in my area who ride the Sammamish and the Burke-Gilman trails, and I'm interested in having someone join me. My schedule is weird and varied so I usually have to plan well ahead.
I'm still riding my old Trek 1100. I also have a Trek 720 that I use mostly for road-working my dogs. It's great for riding all the bike trails built on old railroad beds and powerline access roads in the Cascade foothills.
Thanks!

Ooops, saw from a post in another thread today that it's proper etiquette to post to this thread, which I haven't yet done. My apologies, hope it doesn't look like I was just barging on in without a hello about myself. So... here goes..
Real name: Wendy
Where do you live? Western Australia
Explanation of your handle: My middle name and my family have always called me that..
Explanation of your avatar: that's my lovely roadbike
Age (general or specific) 45
Occupation: Graphic Designer
Favorite bike: Giant TCRc Zero
What's in your stable? My roadbike and my MTB - a Giant Boulder.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 53km/h down our one and only local hill - 3km in length - usually tackle this once a week. Other than that, it's flatland around here.
Most memorable moment on my bike: My first ride ever on a roadbike with clipless pedals - very scary - of course I fell over when I came to a stop as I couldn't unclip. My daughters were watching and thought I was just being silly. Husband had been having an afernoon doze, when he heard I'd fallen off, he chastised me for not waiting for him to wake-up - he was sorry to have missed seeing that....!
Most fun ever had on a bike? Went on a multi-day ride (9 days) - avg 70km per day, camping overnights, riding in all sorts of weather, meeting new people - great experience.

Hi crazy,
The next big ride I'm planning to do is Bicycle Victoria's Tasmanian one next Feb. if I can get myself over there without too much trouble.
I haven't received any emails about the ironman, is that regarding being a volunteer? I'm on their mailing list...
I will definitely be there to either watch or volunteer....we will have to catch up...

Real name: Susan
Where do you live? West Texas
Explanation of your handle: It's pretty flat here. Some days I like that; some days, not so much...
Explanation of your avatar: Hmmm, haven't picked one out yet.
Age (general or specific) 49
Occupation: College professor
Favorite bike: My road bike right now, though I'm dreaming of a Specialized Ruby someday...Sigh.
What's in your stable? My roadbike (Felt F90) and an old Giant Option hybird
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I'm pretty new to cycling, and not used to hills (I'm a Flatlander:rolleyes: !), so it's hard for me to lay off the brakes when I start flying...
Most memorable moment on my bike: I got caught in some traffic, panicked and stopped, forgot to unclip, fell over and broke some ribs. It wasn't as bad as it sounds, but it was certainly memorable ;) .
Most fun ever had on a bike? Today, when I joined up with a local cycling group and had to ride like a beast to keep up with them!

Explanation of your avatar: I haven't picked one out yet.
Age (general or specific) 29
Occupation: Flight Attendant
Favorite bike: My new road bike that I love with all my heart!
What's in your stable? My Trek 1000 WSD and my Specialized Hard Rock.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Unfortunately I haven't gone all that fast yet on my Trek. I think I hit top speed at 27 or so on my ride that I do. It has some hills which are hard going up and kind of scary going down. I did hit over 30 briefly on my Specialized when I was living in Colorado and heading down a mountain road.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? When I get a good one I will definately post it.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Sorry, I won't be able to make your event, party, mother's garage sale because I have to work.
Most memorable moment on my bike: I road 20 miles down a mountain road back in '98 and it was the most breathtaking ride of my life.
Most fun ever had on a bike? The most fun was the one I went on with my now husband on our second date. I fell in love with him on a bike! I was concerned ahead of time that he wouldn't have a bike that I approved of and we both had Specialized Hard Rocks, I knew it was meant to be!!

I just want to first thank everyone for all of the great and helpful advice on the forums. I knew pretty much nothing to begin with, and this site has been amazing!
Real name: Katlyn
Where do you live? Kansas
Explanation of your handle: It felt pretty appropriate. I'm new and inexperienced to biking; it's like I'm just learning to use my wings. There's so much to learn!
Explanation of your avatar: Haven't gotten around to that yet...
Age: (I feel sort of out-of-place and like a young'un, but this site is so awesome that I had to become a member!) 16
Occupation: Student
Favorite bike: My brand new baby that I finally got to pick up yesterday!!!!! (see below)
What's in your stable? The new baby (a Specialized Tricross Comp!), and the old department store Schwinn that I was riding up until yesterday. Let me tell you: BIG improvement!
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Well, see... I'm currently unemployed, and my new bike sufficiently sucked up all of my savings. As of yesterday I'm completely broke, which leaves no room to buy any nifty, much wanted cyclo-computers. Maybe sometime soon ...
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I might edit this and add one later when I know how to post pictures.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm pretty big on telling the truth. I'd feel too guilty otherwise! The only one that I can think of is, "Of course, I have my homework done, Mom."
Most memorable moment on my bike: It was probably earlier this summer when I started doing rides a little over two hours long, and I just came to the realization that I COULD do it. Pushing yourself and finding that you're stronger than you think is a great feeling.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Getting to test ride a bunch of road bikes from different shops was a blast. They were so much lighter than what I'd been riding! I just got to get on and go and see what it felt like to speed along in the drops for the first time :p. That, or when I finally got to hop onto my new Specialized yesterday and (carefully) try out my new Speedplay Frogs. The combination of the new bike and pedals had me riding happy waves. :D

Favorite bike: I'm so non-current with what's available, I just don't know.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 37.7, coming down a long hill on a training ride, about 15 years ago. I loved it, but don't think I'll ever try that again!
Another picture of yourself or your ride? no bike pics scanned into my computer at this time.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'll pass on this one.
Most memorable moment on my bike: Finishing the STP pedaling with only one leg due to a severe knee problem.
Most fun ever had on a bike? An improptu 3-day ride on Whidbey Island, two ferry rides, and camping overnight in what turned out to be a cemetery.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding 60 miles in the Tour de Cure for the first time. It was my first metric century.

Tucson is a lot like Albuquerque as far as altitude and winter weather, isn't it great to be able to ride pretty much year round!
Yeah, it seems great. Although I've lived in Tucson for less than a week now, so I'm still trying to figure out a good route for riding. I can tell I'm going to like it though!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? no pictures right now
What is the biggest lie you've ever told:I am not a good liar so I stay away from it.
Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding the trails at Mount St Anne in Quebec on afmily vacation. On oneof the many inclines I waited at the top for my husband(the boys had already gone on). When he got to the top he fogot to clip out and fell against me and we both toppled over. The bruises lasted weeks.

What's in your stable? Felt F70 road bike, Cannondale F300 mountain bike
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 35 mph, going down a hill west of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, surrounded by picturesque dairy farms. Three years ago, when I still had my 1986 Nishiki TriA triathlon bike.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I have a few tri pics, but they sure are not seeing the light of day! I may want to buy my husband a faster camera before next season ...
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I can't think of one ;). Uh oh, I think that gets me in a recursive lie loop!
Most memorable moment on my bike: Coming back up that Wisconsin hill, chasing after my husband on his brand-new Bianchi. He goes screaming up the hill, I start to slow, and I think "OK, time to switch to my granny gear". Problem was that I didn't have a granny gear! I bought a Trek 1000WSD shortly thereafter, but she and I didn't agree with each other, so I sold it and bought my Felt, which I love.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Going downhill around the side of Haleakala to the Tedeschi Winery, Maui, December 2005. Breathtaking scenery! Of course it was literally uphill all the way back, but it was sure worth it. A close second is riding up to the Maroon Bells outside of Aspen, CO.
Hi Lynne! Look out the window! You can see me waving! I'm 1.5 miles straight west of Wrigley. :D Maybe we can ride together someday!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told:
Yes, of course I can do that....
Most memorable moment on my bike:
Falling in some bushes - ok I'm new to this game. What happened was, I was trying to figure out if I could make it between two posts and avoid my pedal hitting the stump of a middle post which had been cut down. By the time I had figured it out my pedal had hit the stump and I was in the bushes.
Most fun ever had on a bike?
Trying to get out of some bushes when I was lying head first down a small incline with my bike on top of me. I suppose you had to be there...:)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't have any yet.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Oh, boy...
Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, I'm sort of a newbie...it's not much, but the first time I made it all the way up Custer Avenue felt great. It's a mile long hill right at the end of my route, and at my current skill level, it's madness.
Most fun ever had on a bike? I rode out to the farthest of the backroads at night and had the whole place to myself. The cornfields look awesome in the dark, if you can ignore the bugs...
I can't wait until I can make it out into the woods, though.
Prayers, Meditations and Spiritualities showering down on us like rain . Just think how bad things would be if they weren't...
I can't even imagine. :o
I think this place is different, as you've said. I've hardly seen any negativity around here--that's why I joined. Some places are just so draining, between the veiled insults and competition.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: lie? me ? Never!?
Most memorable moment on my bike: I was 11 years old when I first learned to ride, I had gotten a bike for my 5th birthday and had a bad wreck that day bloodied everything was never brave enough to get back on, at 11 years old i was never allowed out of my parents sight except for school then my puppy ran away and no one would go look for it so i dug the bike out of the basement aired up the tires and looked for myself I will never ever forget that day or the spanking i got that night but it was worth it, I was free. Sounds sappy but all true, never did find the puppy.
Most fun ever had on a bike? My first ride on a 10 speed way to big second hand boys bike i could not even reach the ground without leaning still cant.

Whewieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee welcome one and all!! - how wonderful to see so many new faces!!
Lynne: hello from the desert Southwest - I'm here to make your day in the middle of winter when it's so cold outside icicles go inside to play while here....in My state?....it's gorgeous, usually warm(er) and I make no bones about sharing it with all my northern friends here on the board! :p (ps: love the "recursive lie loop"....had me rofl)
Bruno: Welcome all the way from Scotland! I've been to your very fine country twice on choir tours and I gotta tell ya, one of those time I was looking at hiring ads in the local paper and wondering what I needed to come back to the States for. I busted out laughing when I read the "....pictures steal your soul...."; I said that to someone the other day who wanted to take my picture and they just looked at me like I was nuts and then started to explain to me how a digital camera works!
Dakay: I have a riding buddy here that rides a Rod - and she Loves it. I still tease her every once in while tho: we were on a ride, her on her custom Rod, me on my 25+ vintage Trek and someone came into the coffee shop asking whos bikes were outside....she said "you mean the Rod?"...and he said "no the vintage Trek?" He was a huge vintage bike fan and it was My bike he wanted to chat about.
Mel: yup - some of us ride Harley Davidsons too, and Kaws and who knows what else but we keep coming back to our bikes.
Evie: thanks for the afternoon giggle about being passed by double strollers! one of these days ya'll are going go by them so fast you won't even have time to register what you just passed! :D
Tallen: welcome to the board. The only "worry" thing I would say is if biking seems to uncomfortable for you: please consider you're trying on a Wally World Bike and it could be the bike. But here's hoping you find the same joy and freedom we all seem to feel when we hop on a bike.
and yes Bruno: this board Is different. It's the Only board I check Every day, sometimes just to get a spirit lift, sometimes to - hopefully - lift someone elses. I have another board where I log all my rides but I don't post to any of the threads over there but 1 (it's part of my "virtual" ride) and I don't hang around and read any of the threads. The women over here are pretty special: we worry over each other, cry with each other, Ride with each other - sometimes virtually but it's fun to know someone somewhere is "riding" with you, it's a place where you know you are Not alone!

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 35ish, on a downhill in MIddleton, WI, sometime this spring.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "I'm not competitive at all, I just enjoy riding my bike...." (said about a week before joining a local bike club with the inetntion of learning to race:rolleyes: )
Most memorable moment on my bike: Last summer, my first summer riding, I worked up to a 50 mile ride (Tour de Villes, Janesville, WI) and struggled a bit, but met a lot of nice people. This year, a few weeks ago, I did the same ride WITH those people who I had met (who have since become close friends,) and I felt like it was an EASY ride. My partner said, "Remember how much you hated that hill last year?" And I honestly said, "what hill?" A memorable day because it was the first concrete sign of my progress, and I realized how lucky I was to have such a nice group of friends to ride with- I truly turned a corner that day, and realized how much I owed to cycling, and have since become even more of a nut than I was.
Most fun ever had on a bike? see above. I love riding with my friends! This fall I am going to start cyclocross, and I anticipate a lot of fun (and pain!) as I learn yet another way to extend the cycling season.

Shiraz: I tried to find a picture of a bottle of Shiraz but there were wayyyyy to many varieties. :D Tell us which one is your fav - and I'm betting someone here will find a pix and get it translated into an avatar for ya! ;)
Seabiscuit: been there done that bought the book - which I thought was even Better than the movie! oh...and bought the soundtrack too! :D what a neat ID to pick for yourself tho - since I usually compare riding a bike (or motorcycle) to riding a horse - ok...all your horse ladies don't get upset. but like a horse, the bike will react to what your body is telling it, so ride relaxed and take it easy on the "mouth" and the bike will always be there for ya! ;)
tygab: I'm got an 11-yr old cat that is all mouth. My dad even renamed her Szi which is "mouth" in Hungarian coz she never stops talking. I rescued her when she was 10 and have never regretted it.

I've been lurking here for a bit, and something happened this morning that made me think it's high time to introduce myself. I was in the locker room in the gym and a woman was saying she heard on the radio that Floyd Landis had shot himself. Now I know what really happened, but it was then that I realized that I was gonna need somewhere to talk about it if it were true, and I was thinking to myself that I really should have de-lurked here by now... so here I am. :D

Ah CorsairMac, how wonderfully wrong you are. The weather here is spectacular compared to WI. It doesn't get as cold in Denver, plus without the humidity, the cold doesn't feel so bone chilling. And the bonus is over 300 days of sunshine! Almost like being in Florida, without the bugs. The one thing that is amazing is that we will get several inches of snow, and I swear, it is gone in 2-4 days and it is 40-60 degrees. It really is pretty mild here. Let me know when you want to visit!
The altitude on the other hand does sneak up on you! Good training though. Take care :D

actually we have this running joke here: since Albuquerque downtown is 5000' and everywhere else is Up from there, why does Denver get to be called the mile high city? LOL and uh - thanks but CO is a summer only state for me........too cold in the winter!

I'm with BadgerGirl on this one...
In north america, I've lived in canada, chicago, the SW, and even florida. No comparison - winters in the midwest are, were for me anyway, much rougher than anything I've experienced in the SW. I would take Denver/SLC/ABQ/etc anytime over WI/IL/MN.
Since Corsairmac mentioned a running joke about mile high city (which she is right on :D ) - I had one going while in chicago.....the sun goes down in, oh, about November, and then reemerges sometime in late April! Cold, windy, short days - can you say gloomy in winter? Loved chicago, great city, but the winters were very harsh on this island girl. :)

Gets a bit chilly in Scotland in the winter but I visited Chicago in April a few years ago. First day went on a fantastic walking tour of the architectural history of the city. I was dressed in tee shirt and a light jacket and mid way through the walk it started blowing a gale and snowing up a blizzard.
My friend and I could only collapse in helpless laughter (the alternative was to die from hypothermia). Our fellow culture seekers looked at us as if we were mad (but we fooled them- we looked back as if we weren't :D )
Coldest April they'd had in years apparently...and whatdy'a know - no gloves or scarves available in the shops which were full of little summer tops and dresses! First time I've been glad to get back to Scotland for the heat!
Chicago's a great city tho' - full of brilliant buildings (big Frank Lloyd Wright fan here)
But CWR probably wins on the chill factor.

I vividly recall laying in the ditch yelling, "Mama!" and my mom standing over me saying, "oh, you're alright, get up." That's the last memory I have of riding a bike until I got on one two weeks ago!

OK...........the following gives a bit of background about the make of my bike, also a pic of my bike which just happens to be the best (to me)! Singing in the Rain, not sure about the association BUT, I really love to ride in the rain, strange but true.

Orange Mountain Bikes history begins with the Tushingham B52, which was one of the UK's first mountain bikes. It was created as a specialty product by Cumbria in the Lake District and as an offshoot from Tushingham Sails, a leading manufacturer of quality windsurfing sails.
Later, Lester Noble, a partner in Tushingham Sails, fell in love with mountain biking and left Tushingham Sails. He partnerned with Steve Wade, a bike racer with an engineering background, and formed Orange Mountain Bikes.
Handbuilt in Halifax, England, these bikes are ALL English.
Well you did ask ...........hope you are still awake?

However, I love being out on my bike, either alone or with my partner, I do ride all the year round.
I know I have said it before but this site is great, am real pleased I found it, so far, everybody seems real friendly.

***New helmet - $$, New gloves - $, New shoes - $$$, New shorts - $$, New jerseys - $$, New larger pump, that little fr**kin piece of crap - $, (oops, sorry :o ) Inability to pry the smile off my face after every ride - priceless!! :D
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Just got a bike computer about a week ago and the survey says... 33mph! Scared the bejeezus out of me and I haven't been able to find it since. (Must be in hiding.)
Another picture of yourself or your ride? None yet, but gimme time...
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "Yes dear, you did a great job fixing that", as I hide the tools behind my back.
Another one that seems to work more often than I would of thought - "Geez, my shoulders are killing me. Can you give me a massage? I'm all in knots."
Most memorable moment on my bike: A couple of weeks ago, I rack my bike on the car and head out to Strasburg, PA (30 min drive) for a nice little spin. I'm rolling along, checking out the scenery, catching some very interesting odors and dodging road pies. (farm country ya know) I came up on an Amish girl named Katie and we rode together and talked for a while. Me on my nice, new, light road bike. Her on her heavy, rusted out, single speed, gonna-fall-apart-any-second beater. Started up a nice gradual grade that turned into a very long, steep hill. (I'd call it a mountain but Rand-McNally says otherwise.) There I am huffing and puffing, changing into my granny gear as fast as I can click and she pulls away like she's on a downhill. Got my pedals blown in at 5 mph. I hate hills! 'Nuff said. (As soon as I caught my breath, I laughed like h*ll! Then I went home, got on the internet and found you nice ladies to show me the light. I've been lurking for a while now. Very interesting reading. Can't wait to come up on Katie again. ;) )
Most fun ever had on a bike? When I was 4 years old, my Dad took me to K Mart for my 1st big girl bike. We got there, surveyed the possibilities, and there I spotted my next, new, bestest friend. A little blue/green bike with a white seat and streamers on the handlebars. Upon my test drive around the aisle, my Dad concluded that for one so young, I must have made a very wise choice for we headed for the checkout counter right then and there, no discussion or pleading needed. (1st and only time) I rode it the whole way through the store and refused to get off it when it came time to checkout. The lady had to come around the counter to check the price. I rode it right up to the car door and went home with her in my lap. (remember benchseats?) My Dad had to put the front seat the whole way back so Spitfire and I (that was her name) could both fit in the seatbelt. :o Years later he confided that he felt like he'd broken his big toe by the time we got home from the store because that's all that would reach the gas pedal. :) :) :)
As I mentioned above, I've been lurking for about 2 weeks and I have to say, this seems to be the friendliest group of women around. I've enjoyed reading some of your passages and just couldn't find any reasons why I hadn't introduced myself yet. Thanks for all the help you've already given me. (even though you didn't know you were doing it) Looking forward to joining in on future discussions. Take care!

Clockwork: Loved the bike!! and what matters is YOu love the bike! even though I just bought new Trek road bike, I will Never get rid of my 1989 Trek - it would be too much like losing a very old, dear and trusted friend! Actually Doc will probably end up being my winter commute bike since he weighs just a tad more than the baby bike! As for Clockwork Orange: very nice bike and thanks for sharing the story/pixs! Now I can go boldly forth and claim "why yes, I've heard of Orange bikes - haven't you?" ;)
Xray: Loved reading your bio - thanks for the morning humour! If it's any consolation, Katie probably went home and told her family she met a lady that had this really neat bike and could She get one? ;) Anytime you need some hill-climbing: come visit me in New Mexico, we'll see if we can't find you some! :p Now get ye hence and find Katie and show her how hills are Really climbed!

Corsair - glad to give you a laugh. I didn't even tell that one at home. No need to give someone a chance to add insult to injury, ya know? As for Katie, I'm sure she can still kick my butt. :o But, I'm working on it. Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? While on Precious 39.8 mpg while decending Rose Valley mtn in Ojai, CA 1.5 yrs ago...The best part is I didn't climb it, and I am STILL mad I didn't hit 40! Grrrrrrrrrr.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Always a picture of the ride...
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Have no idea, I can't remember anything so I always end up in my own self made Emily trap....
Most memorable moment on my bike: So far, it was out in CA--climbing my first mountain, a tiny 2.5 mile climb which I did VERY SLOWLY, but I got to the top! On the way up, some guy passed me who was not going much faster than I was who mentioned that it was the first time he had ever passed anyone climbing before! :( (I did catch him on the decent though!:D )
Most fun ever had on a bike? I don't have a specific time. Everytime I switch from my road bike to the cross or mountain bike I think this is it! It can't get much better than that! Everytime I go from the cross/mtn. bike to the road bikes I think it can't get much better than that! Needless to say, any day on the bike is a good day!

What's in your stable? A Diamondback Hybrid (openly sneered at in the finest bike shops in the northwest)
Fastest speed on a road bike? Well, my fastest speed on my hybrid was somewhere around 19 mph—and that was screaming downhill on the Centennial trail near Arlington, WA
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Neither of us is photogenic and have repeatedly declined to be photographed
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: “That was the best one ever, Hon!”
Most memorable moment on my bike: well, while I was busy screaming down above mentioned hill at my best speed ever, I managed to spook an approaching horse, which reared on its hind legs (just like in the movies!) and skittered across the path in front of me. Luckily, the rider was skillful enough not to be thrown, and also to avoid our imminent collision (by inches!) by regaining control of the horse and guiding it swiftly back onto the proper path.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Around the age of ten I used to go screaming down the hill in front of my child hood home on my purple Spyder bike in my favorite dress with a huge sash and bow flapping wildly behind me. I would climb the hill again and again, stopping only after the sash of my dress got caught in the chain, making nasty greasy marks that had to be hidden. Recently when My husband bought me a new bike, I was delighted to see that it was a purple one. I snatched it away from him as he lifted it out of the van and jumped on it right then and there and went screaming down our street with my wind breaker flapping behind me and the neighbors looking at me as if I were insane; ever the 43 year old little girl. It felt like something that was out of synch got back into synch; it was a very joyous moment.

Singing in the Rain, not sure about the association BUT, I really love to ride in the rain, strange but true.
If you're ever in the mood for a fairly disturbing, yet thought-provoking, movie, see if you can find a copy of "A Clockwork Orange". There's a scene that explains the song connection. Now, of course, the question is: Since you love to ride in the rain, do you sing when you do so? ;)

Favorite bike: I have a Breezer Uptown 8 that I love to smithereens. My Schwinn Hollywood is also pretty darned cool.
What's in your stable? Breezer Uptown 8 (named Gloria), a 1960something Schwinn Hollywood (with a 2 speed bendix hub, that you shift by pedaling backwards. :) ), and a green 1960something Schwinn I'm-not-sure-what, with a stepthrough frame. Mom's ride at present; she says it's really comfy. That one's a single speed.
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I have no idea how fast I go, but I know it's not very fast. :)

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Oh man, I can't think of one. I'll have to come back and edit this later.
Most memorable moment on my bike: When I was about 12 or 13, some people came over to our house to visit that I didn't particularly like. I stayed around the requisite few minutes, then went for a bike ride. I can't remember how far it was, but I rode all the way to the library and back. I'd have to ask my mom how far it was, but I remember her being shocked when she asked where I'd been for so long (I was gone a couple of hours) and I told her. I felt really proud of myself. It was a good feeling.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Um, haven't been riding very long as a grownup, and the above incident is the only one I remember super clearly, but the other day when I rode down to the LBS was pretty fun. There was one part where I was going a little fast, and Radar figured out he could gallop if he wanted to - it was just FUN.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm a terrible liar. Fortunately, my job had flextime, eliminating the need for concocting some novel whopper as to why one is late for work!
Most memorable moment on my bike: This past spring I got back to riding after over 20 years of not! All I had was a 6-speed Huffy (aka the "Huffy & Puffy") I bought at Target. I saw an announcement that MLK Blvd (formerly known as Liberty) would be closed to auto traffic for 2 sundays in august. Kid was at his dad's so I hopped on the Huffy, biked to Lake Erie & back (involving a serious uphill), 18 miles RT! I did it! I loved it! The Ohio City Bicycle Co-op had a booth at this event - advised me to get a better bike, which I did the next day.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Manhattan. Figure this out, I'm scared to drive I-77 in W Va (in a car) because the hills freak me out: on the other hand, last June rented a bike in Manhattan, got bored with the trails, & ended up riding thru Times Square! Wheeee!

Explanation of your handle: I like to telemark ski
Explanation of your avatar: oh, crud, I knew I forgot something....
Age (general or specific) Chronological age = 43 Mentally = 17 1/2
Occupation: Accounting
Favorite bike: Gosh, they are all my favorites. I love them equally (sort of). Hildy is my Trek road bike and she is faithful, fun, fearless, and stubborn at times. Gert is my Rocky Mountain hardtail mountain bike and she is definitely fearless, a bit awkward, but always willing to go the extra mile. Now Mable is my Specialized retired mountain bike. She was a little heavy for the single track, but she gets a good workout on the trainer.
What's in your stable? See previous
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 41 mph down a hill over by Pomfret.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't believe in pictures
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: "That was great french toast, honey" Undercooked on the inside and black on the outside. But it was a lie with good intentions.
Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, I have never had a bad day on either bike. But one of the last rides I did was 75 miles in the pouring rain, with an average speed of 16.1 mph, so that was memorable.
Most fun ever had on a bike? Wow, that is a hard one, because like I said, I have never had a bad day on a bike. I just can't pull out one 'best' because every time I ride I discover something new to love.

If you're ever in the mood for a fairly disturbing, yet thought-provoking, movie, see if you can find a copy of "A Clockwork Orange". There's a scene that explains the song connection. Now, of course, the question is: Since you love to ride in the rain, do you sing when you do so? ;)
Hi Kalidurga
Ahem, my memory is bad enough these days, however, I did see the film when it was released 35 years ago but must confess to not remembering too much of it.
Fortunately for the wild life around me when I am riding in the rain, I do not sing, just generally have a stupid smile on my face. I guess I enjoy riding in the rain, as there are far fewer people about.

Down here in the south of England we are slightly more fortunate, the weather has been in the high 70's recently. September is proving to be a lovely month, ideal for riding, although I enjoy the heat as much as the rain.
Now on a more humerous note...............just checked out the weather in good ol' Albuquerque and it appears you are having thunderstorms? Is the Mac in your name anything to do with raincoat? :p
I have a convertible and most of this summer I have been able to have the top down...............OK, this has been an exceptional summer.

Laura, that's EXACTLY how I felt when I got on a bike for the first time in 37 years 2 1/2 months ago! I love the way you put it. I felt like I was back in time, but this time **I** was in control, and my spirit was FREE!!!! Total joy- it was like a spiritual moment for me, coming HOME safe to my child spirit.

Yes we call a soft top car a convertible here too.
as for the thunderstorms in Abq: *looks around quickly for Surly - don't see her*......we're actually in trouble in my poor little state right now:
For July we were 256% above our avg rainfall and for Aug we were somewhere in the 250% above again. Parts of the state have flooded so bad we've had to ask for federal relief. Since New Mexico is considered mostly desert the ground here can't absorb that much rain and it's created quite the mess.

Age (general or specific) specifically I am 32, 33 in a few weeks
Occupation: Administrative Assistant/Missionary
Favorite bike: My Cannondale!!!
What's in your stable? Cannondale R700 Feminine
Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 30-35 (faster, if I wasn't such a chicken and rode the brakes; slower, when I am Queen Super-Chicken), down the killer hill by my house
Most memorable moment on my bike: I was probably 6 or 7. My bike had those brakes that you use by pressing back on the pedal. I was out riding and for some reason hit my brakes and a rock or something at the same time. Flipped straight up and over the handlebars... :) I don't remember what happened to my childhood bike, now that I think of it... Or it was the time my crazy friend Carrie and I went for a bike ride during a rainstorm and had to carry our bikes across a flooded road (don't worry, it wasn't rushing water exactly; and yes, we did know it was flooded before we left the house), and bike along a major highway... Not smart, I know. But definitely memorable... She is the friend who would put me on horses that wouldn't stop or liked to buck me off near creeks... Yes, we are still friends, and ride horses and bikes together. I'm just older and wiser now, maybe. :)
Most fun ever had on a bike? That will be either this Thursday or Saturday when I get my bike back from the shop after a month long hiatus and I see if my shoulder can handle riding again... (stupid dog accident) Just sitting on the bike will be enough for me. I miss her...

Katie: my first road bike on this my latest adventure in cycling was a 1987 Peugeot Avaroiz. He's really just a tad too tall for me......51 cm and the perfect fit for me is a 47 but I sure do love that bad boy. Most of the components are still original to the bike and he'll stay in my stable for years to come!
NJGirl: but of Course you should yearn for that $10,000 Cervalo! Every once in awhile I go to trekbikes.com and build my custom bike - just for grins and giggles. So far the cheapest I've been able to build was somewhere around $7500. lol Never hurts to dream eh? ;)

I joined a couple of months ago and have had fun (at work!) finding other women who ride. I commute three days a week, the most recently memorable being Tuesday when it bucketed rain in the morning and I went through a puddle (ha! lake!) that stretched curb to curb and was deep enough to come up over my bottom bracket. Needless to say, my toes squished the rest of the ride in.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I'm not very fast. I think I hit 21 on a downhill, but don't have many hills around here.
:p Tell me about it, sister! The fastest I've ever gone was at the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon last month, when I was going down an overpass, with a tailwind, and my arms in the aerobars. 30 mph! Whoo-hoo!
Welcome, Carolyn! There's the makings of a TE/Chicago posse here! :D

Thanks, Lise! The only hill I ever tackle is on the south end of the Lake Path. I make it a point to hit it both ways, though, rather than going around because I know it's my only real chance to do it.

You have true mental toughness. I ride that "hill" when I'm training in my own mind, but not when I'm just "out for a ride"! :p

Well L.A. you've made a lousy first impression. Lashing out at the women on the TE boards because of something that happened somewhere else is completely uncalled for.

Yet you continue to antagonize the women on the board. Please take yourself elsewhere.

I'm a male, 6' foot, 24 year-old college student cycler from L.A. that has been cycling since I was about 18. .
Ovoleg? Is that you?

So I am here at the request of my GF to better understand the mindset of female cyclists.
If you wanted to "understand" women cyclists better, perhaps it would have been more prudent to ask questions in a polite manner, rather than make macho, adolescent comments.
Just from the few postings you made, you seem more interested in posturing and inflating your own ego, as opposed to listening, learning and understanding.

LOL, who is "ovaleg?"
I said ovoleg, not ovaleg...though interestingly enough...we did have an ovaleg show up at Bike Forums recently. Funny how you seemed to know that.

You're absolutely right Bluetree. I am working on listening to and understanding and respecting women cyclists better. I have the "ability" to speak my mind and I guess I'm too up-front about things. I shall keep opinions aside, do more reading and less talking, unless I have a valid question that someone would be happy to answer. :)
You've been a resgistered member one day, posted 25 times, and posted 6 times since saying "I shall keep opinions aside, do more reading and less talking".
Obviously not a man of your word.
