Still waters running deep- week of May 18

Heeey it's Thursday and no one has opened a thread?

So my post-race recovery took until yesterday. The intensity did not really justify 3 days but my tibialis muscles were rock hard. No pain, just hard. Massaged nightly and I'm running again tonight.

[Edit back, 42 minutes mixed forest roads, trails, chip trail, yay.... will communicate with my shin tomorrow]

New week? I haven't run that much (blush) --

But I did get in four miles this morning before work - 1 mile of run/walk for warm up and cool down, and 2 miles of tempo. Temp was in the upper 60's, cloudy and breezy - very comfortable.

And the good news! I went in for a complete physical yesterday with all the bloodwork - my cholesterol, glucose, liver function and everything else were all good. My blood pressure is staying lower than before I started running - it's so nice to see the payoff.

I've been running the same boring ~7 miles (haven't measured) lately in my mid-week runs. Wednesdays I do 45min bike/15min run bricks, and this week's with Lucy was different. Heart rate didn't shoot up quite so fast, legs didn't feel quite so stumpy, it felt like I was warmed up rather than running tired. Hip felt pretty good this week, still off, but better.

Tomorrow is another running day... we'll see how the hip goes, it just feels stiff right now. This weekend, another few hours, or I might just run a local half marathon and evening miles (it's pretty much on the IM course anyway). I had to cut last week's run short because I overheated my poor doggie, and by the time we got back after lounging in the shade and drinking out of my camelbak, it was unseasonably warm for me, too. This weekend's weather looks much better for running, partly cloudy and 60s-70s (last weekend was upper 80s and sun, I have a nasty shoulder sunburn from my long ride even though I wore SPF45... SPF70 here I come).

Run today on the trail...55 minutes, with #8 30-sec intervals of "sprinting"... I really am not a sprinter, so I just pick up the pace to a high effort. Overall went about 5.7 miles by the time I finished. Then hit the kitchen, then the couch, and haven't moved since.

Did five miles today (treadmill) for the first time in May. 10:10 pace -- one of my best. Nothing hurt. Doncha just love runs like that?

You know, I feel better the longer I run (within reason - I don't eat or drink on my runs, since they're < 1 hr), but I've noticed that I feel better after 30 minutes have passed. I guess the same on the bike, now that I think about it. It's nice because a year ago this time I was running about two miles max and simply couldn't imagine running five miles.

Someday I'll actually run six miles. I like to take my goals sloooooowly.

What, not zero to 7.4 miles in 4 weeks?

I had a great run on Tues. I'm saving the details for my training thread.

I think I'm going to try my first brick on Saturday.

5.2 on the fitness trail this afternoon. A beautiful, sunny day, just the right temperature. I was a little sore starting out, from a hard ride yesterday, but I settled in after about three laps and it felt good.

Wahine, I never did say a proper thank you for that warmup routine you posted a few weeks back. It's been a real help to me, really makes my ankles feel better. Plus, when I passed a guy on the trail today, he said, "Didn't I just see you running sideways?"

Replying to myself, because I'm a dork like that.

Today's run felt good. Minor hip nagging, I describe it as "annoying" more than "painful." I had a super low heart rate, and the weather was perfect. I had to push harder than normal. I wonder if that's the new bike taking it easier on my legs on the bike days, or if I was just "on" today. Some days you got it!

My swim workout on Wednesday night ate my sunburn (I can find no better description), exposing tender flesh that wasn't ready to be exposed. All the moisturizing body wash and lotion in the world couldn't save me from the chlorine. I'm happy for clothes that don't chafe, but that part of your shoulder (on top of the shoulder/bicep, basically) is hard to avoid.

On the bike tomorrow... back to running Sunday, running the half marathon. They changed the course and I think it's much much more flat and much less on the IM course (unless you run the full marathon, which is not happening). I think I'll be finding myself adding some time with my doggie in the afternoon/evening.

It was raining/snowing/sleeting/etc yesterday, so I did a bike/run brick indoors on the trainer and treamill. 1 hr bike followed by a 4 mile run at a 9 minute mile pace. That's a lot faster than I'd run outdoors, but it puts me on track for my olympic distance tri in 2 weeks.

    Last year, 02:21:09
This year: somewhere in the 02:10 to 02:11 range (official results not yet posted, weird). Now, it was more flat (they basically took out the big hill for the HM and left it for the full), but I also rode the hilly/rolling IM course yesterday so I consider it win-win. I was hoping for 2:05 or under, but it's not like I trained just for that, or "saved" my legs very well.

My husband met up with a local woman whose daughter was running her first half (they own a sandwich shop about a mile from our house). They cheered me in, then we cheered her in (she was about 15 minutes behind me). Seeing her finish was flashback city! This same HM in 2006 was my first. She wants to do an Olympic distance tri but is a little afraid of the mass swim. (Unfortunately, the best way to get over that is to Just Do It(tm)!).

So... I think I've got it in me. I felt good, despite being under-fueled (left in a hurry, forgot gels, hate gatorade but had some anyway), and finished super strong. I don't know that I'll be able to do the back 13.1 like that, I'll probably negotiate the first 13.1 differently and average out.

Back to running Tuesday... helping someone from work move tomorrow (supposed to be my day off, but we got volunteered and he only lives about a mile away).

I've given up... I ride on riding days, and run on running days. Only in a downpour will I not ride or give up riding. I hate riding in the rain, but we have had SO MANY days that are "inbetween" lately... ugh.

Didn't expect to be wearing my arm warmers and insulated sports bra so late in May...:P

See, now, my first thought is "all those people who seem to think that running is a good thing came to their senses!" but I see that lots of people have now added to the thread, at least claiming to have run, so I guess not.
