Avatar problems

Hey y'all,

Even with friends that know photoshop in and out, I can't get an pic for my avatar to be less than 20k. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements. Since that has a subset of the full Photoshope features, I assume that the same type of thing will work in Photoshop.

In Adobe Photoshop Elements:
- open your photo
- From the Image menu, choose Resize
you should see a dialog box that allows you to specify pixels or inches
- Change the dimensions in the pixel box to match the allowable size
TE allows an avatar that is 100 x 100 pixels
So change the dimension on the larger side (width or length) to 100
- Save your newly sized picture with a type of .jpg.

You can do the same thing with Microsoft Photo Editor
- open your photo
- From the Image menu, choose Resize
either change the units to pixels, or leave it at inches and try something like a 1 inch side
- save with a type of .jpg and look at the file details to check the size.

I edit mine in Thumbs Plus. I don't know what program you are using, but you could try saving at a quality lower than 100%. Even going down to 90% makes a big difference.

Yeah, I've been doing this in Photoshop! 99x99 pixels at 72 dpi. Saving as .jpg with quality all the way down to 0. I've turned off thumbs, etc and STILL can't get it under 20k.

Just odd I say!

Sounds odd - If you email me the picture you want to use, or attatch it to a message here I can give it a whirl - I design all of my own avatars with Illustrator and Photoshop.

Using Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature can often compress files/photos to really small file sizes, whilst still retaining good enough quality - moreso than just saving a file the regular way in Photoshop/Elements.
It's worth experimenting.

Actually the reason "Save for Web" works better than just saving is that Photoshop embeds a thumbnail within the thumbnail, thus it can double the size of the image when just saving. However, "Save for Web" strips this out.
