RANS vs. Electra bikes? Which is more comfortable?

I'm 31 I haven't ridden a bike in about 15 years. It was my favorite hobby as a teen and I'd like to get back into it.

I'm looking for something for paved trails. I'm confused about all of the new bikes out there. Which do you think is the most comfortable bike for a very overweight woman looking to ride short distances locally while having fun and getting in shape?

Does anyone know about the differences between the Electra Townies & Cruiser models? I love that wicker basket on the Cruisers (like the Gypsy) but I'm not sure that's a good reason to buy a bike

the reason we ultimately buy a particular bike is not necessarily ever a logical one. The important thing is that you get a bike and start riding it.
I am not sure what a RANS bike is.
Do you live somewhere where there are hills? A one speed wouldn't work too
well then.

I like the townies better, they have gears and they look lighter weight; they don't have a coaster brake!

I live in Seattle, and I couldn't even go the 2 blocks to the main road in our neighborhood without gears!!

Just from the posture I've seen riders settling into on RANS vs Electra, I'd recommend the Electra. From a coolness factor, I'd recommend the Electra. On a resale front (in case you go for another bike someday) I'd vote for the Electra.

There are a couple women on the board who ride Electras. I think one of them has been doing some centuries on her Townie.

Multiple gears are very nice to have. Even if you don't think you'll be riding where you'd use them yet, you might want to get one with plenty of gears for later. (cuz once you start riding again, you know you're not gonna wanna stop! )

The Townies allow you to put your feet on the ground, while still sitting on the saddle. Both styles of Electra are high on the cool factor, IMHO.
