I recently saw a bumper sticker that said

    Honk if you love Jesus
Text if you want to meet him.

    That about sums it up!

It's great if you can pull over, but unfortunately there are some rural areas where there is literally no where to pull over to have a conversation. (I am only talking about talking on your cell phone, not texting.) Personally I can't think of a good reason to ever text while driving. The rural areas, esp are a great reason to have a blue tooth though.

Don't fool yourself - talking on a phone with a hands free unit is no safer than talking on a regular cell. (and this is not my opinion, but scientifically tested fact...) It's not the lack of a hand on the steering wheel that is the problem, but the lack of your brain focusing on the road. Humans can multitask to some extent, but driving is already multitasking and adding a phone conversation pushes us over our limits. Do everyone a favor and turn off the cell when you are behind the wheel, hands free or not- no conversation is worth someone dying over.

I don't have any problem not talking on the phone while I'm driving, or texting, either while moving, but I do confess to sending and checking for messages when I'm stopped at a light. I always put the phone back in the case when the light changes and the line of cars starts moving forward, though. Always.

What do you guys do if you're trying to follow the directions on a GPS? I try to memorize the directions as far ahead as I can, and catch up when I stop at lights, but still, if I'm trying to find an address, I do glance at the screen a lot as I'm getting closer. Gladly, I don't have to do this very often as most every place I go, I already know where I am.
