Not dumb. It's been a long time since I've been in one and most of the time I was woken from being asleep. There is a sound but it's more of a "everything is shaking" sound. I don't know if you were outside and nothing was there that there would be a sound. There probably would be one.
It's unnerving to hear breaking glass and things falling and just hoping it will END!
CC, when the Nisqually Quake hit, 6.8 on the Richter scale,
INSIDE the building we heard quite a bit. EVERYTHING was rattling... I didn't hear the floor cracking open, there was too much other background noise.. sort of the noise you'd hear on a train going down the tracks...
That's a big 10-4!
I usually don't feel earthquakes unless they're pretty substantial. I felt this one, and I'm here in Alviso working late (rather than at home.) My housemates say that it was shaking so badly at home that they could barely get their footing.
I guess I'd better finish up here and go home to clean up the damage....

I was in a 6.5 a couple years ago at christmas time. Lucky only 1 death but ton's of damage. We were lucky and only lost a german santa clause off the fireplace. Funny I was on my bike when it hit. That was weird. Like I was really drunk. Then looked up and saw the phone polls swaying and ran to a dirt road to get away from falling wires. Some lady was screaming like it was the end of the world.

Just got home.
I was driving home at the time. I was stopped at a stoplight in Menlo Park, and my car suddenly started shaking.
At first I thought "geeze, the car is idling really rough, I shouldn't have put off that tuneup for so long" but then it occurred to me the engine was running just fine.
I had the car radio on KCBS so about the time it finally dawned on me that it the earth that was shaking up the car, the reporter on KCBS was saying that the studio in San Francisco was shaking.
As I was heading towards the Dumbarton Bridge they came back on the air saying the epicenter was near Alum Rock. Oh great, right near my home, and right near the bridge I'm just about to cross. gah.
I tried to reach LeeBob on the cell phone but couldn't get thru. He was painting our spare room today and I was hoping he wasn't on a ladder at the time ...
Got across the bridge just fine, the house is still standing, and Lee was done with the painting hours ago (oh, and our spare room looks great!). Lots of shaking but no damage. So all is well in my little world.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but on the radio they were interviewing a guy from the USGS just before I reached home. With a mag 5-plus earthquake, they're saying there's a small possibility of a stronger quake w/in the next couple of hours. Get out your flashlights.![]()

Fortunately we only have electricity at the house -- no gas. (I'm going to refrain from any flatulence jokes, since snap is the moderator and this is a family forum....)
I will make sure the water heater is still secured.
Oh, and jobob, thanks for the cheery news to expect a bigger & better quake shortly.![]()
Yeah thanks Jo(bearer of doom)Bob.![]()

Party at Treks, I've got water at least ;-) Y'all bring the beer and chocolate.
The quake was on the Calaveras fault according to the news.

Weird, we didn't feel a thing here in Concord.
The epicenter was close to Sierra and Felter roads (in addition to Meli-sam's house). Being near the epicenter of a 5.6 must have been pretty intense.
Maybe it flattened the climb out a little bit.![]()

Ahh... eathquakes makes me homesick for New Zealand!
All you need is love...la-dee-da-dee-da...all you need is love!
Glad it was light and everyone's OK.
A few years ago, we had a 5.0 tremor in Evansville. The next day, there were city workers using jackhammers outside my office building.
The level of vibration from the jackhammer equaled the level of vibration from the earthquake.
Gave me a new respect for that city worker on the street holding on to his jackhammer!
