I guess maybe somebody administrative decided that the forums most popular thread should have a more prominent placement. So we got kicked out of the "closet" so to speak.

Half-marathon over. Sabbatical year over. It's back to "sacking shirt and oat cakes" as they say here.

X... that bike. Whuff! Hot. Maybe not as much as Miz Cakes, but close. You need a Brooks for that little wonder of engineering.

Hah! Hey, if you want to know some local trails, let me know- I'll hook you up. well... local for here. Hey. Lots of people make considerable drives to their mtb trails of choice. Maybe not that considerable, though. *hmph*

Everyone else- busy weekend. Oh the fun of intrapersonal dialogue and b*tchiness. Life goes on. Right? It goes on? Yeah, I know it does... just... need reminding.
CWR- would you still be available for crutch-assisted shin kickings? I may need some help.

    Kit

Kit- I have a message from CWR: "I can do crutch assisted shin kickings, but they may come at a higher cost".

Mimi-Sorry you caught my cold. I too am home feeling miserable.

Wow, don't we feel important now!

Mimi, hope you're feeling better soon (no riding bike and racking up miles while you're home )

Alright. Here's my blonde/brain fart moment of the year. Got a portable dvd player at Best Buy this past summer. While my ds was watching a movie in the car the screen made a pop noise and shut off. I tried everything I could think of to make it work - recharged battery, tried plugging it in the wall, made sure it was on, made sure it wasn't on the video thing to your tv. All to no avail. I couldn't find my receipt but had the box, my cc statement and BB wouldn't help me. So I held onto it for 6 months and returned it after Christmas. Dude from the Geek squad plugs it in, switches button from video to tv setting to the dvd player and viola! It works. I appreciated that he didn't make me feel like an idiot in front of everyone and now my ds can watch movies on his way home from dads. Geesh.

I started a new workout program today and, being the extremist I can be, opted for the strict bodybuilder type diet for the first six days to jump start my weight loss. It consists of split workouts - cardio in the am and cardio/strength at night. Coupled with the 2500 race on bj I will be working out for 7 days a week this week. Oh, and did I mention it's only 1200 calories I'm predicting a grumpy, slightly dizzy Dar by tomorrow. I emailed them this morning to see how to incorporate my cycling into this workout so I don't kill myself. I am just so frustrated with my weight and need to be in shape this summer so I can enjoy myself. Plus it's a promise I've had to myself for years - to be in the best shape of my life when I turn 40 in August. Now here I sit sadly counting down the next 20 minutes so I can eat my 2 1/4 cups of salad with one tblsp of dressing and 1/2 cup ff cottage cheese I want to lose 30 pounds in 18 weeks, so I have the weight off and can eat to sustain longer distances on the bike to prep for the 24 hour race at the end of July. Will you be my cheering section? I'm going to take the dreaded "before" pix tonight...
    Dar

    Dar,
Did you check with a doctor or nutrionist abut eating only 1200 calories with all of the exercise you plan to do? And I will be cheering you on, just want to make sure your healthy.

Survey: 1 in 5 managers read e-mail in the loo

"Nearly one in five small business managers read work-related e-mails and other documents while in the bathroom, and 49 percent say they work while driving."

Uh, no I can honestly say I've never checked with a dr. before starting a workout. But if I start getting dizzy I'll have to add calories. Actually, I'll have to figure out what expenditure the workouts will give me and figure out the deficit. I don't want to lose more than 2-3 pounds a week. I'm no Mike Magnason you know! Anyone know a good way to figure this out??

    BMo3 - hope you're feeling better too!

You can log your workouts free online, there are several sites that will estimate your caloric expenditure. The only reason I brought it up is because I easily burn around 900 calories if I do an aerobic workout in the morning and an exercise routine in the evening. That would leave my body with give or take 300 calories-not good, I would lose muscle not fat.

Just something to consider. All I want is for you to stay healthy.

Dar, honestly, I would be more concerned with the activity level and making sure you have a correct carb/protein balance than watching caloric intake. I'm sure either people will back me up or correct me (open to either...) but the body tends to notice when activity level is greater than the calories consumed and will eventually adjust the entire metabolism (i.e. slow it down!) to adjust so you don't "starve to death". Work on building muscle and your intake of proteins to facilitate this new muscle, and the metabolism will increase as muscle burns fat. It's a more gradual change, but avoids the risk of burnout and metabolic changes.

1200 would be 'alright' for someone totally sedentary, but with any kind of activity level, you need to fuel yourself.
Maintain your blood sugar levels, etc etc. The more you can do without your body feeling 'stressed' the better off you are.

Kit, you stated that much better than me. Yep the body will shut down not only the metabolism but will store fat and burn muscle. Not good, in my opinion, but I work on burning fat gaining lean muscle.

Dar, there are some really great discussion about this on the forum. I think they are in the Triathalon section.

Jen-who needs to shed 20 pounds of fat and gain lean muscle in place of the aforementioned fat.

Thanks guys. The daily 1200 calories is just for the first week to jump start me and consists of 120 grams of protein, 80 grams of carbs and 45 grams of fat. This lower carb week will hopefully force my body to use stored fat (is that right?). After that I will jump to 1600 cal/day with more of a 40/30/30 split. Anyway, I'm logging it all on beachbody.com but there are errors on their pages for calorie expenditures and body fat sites. Any ideas for other ones?

I am going to have so much gas with all these salads Good thing you guys are in cyber world, lol!

ediets.com always treated my mom well. For an activity lvl like yours, I'd be more tempted to say 18-2000 calories, actually. Just to be safe. Not sure on the ratios. I know everyones' metabolism's different, but this is just my $.02. At my SOMA job, I'm okay with 2000, and gain weight (just a little) on 3000. When I'm really active, though, I'm okay with 3000... never gone beyond that.
focus on fiber, water, and nutritional supplements to make sure that when cutting back on your diet you're not sacrificing nutrition.
Atkins' is really not that bad, but I don't entirely agree with the protein to carb ratio. don't forego them completely, esp. if you're working out. Lean proteins like tofu, beans, turkey (and ground turkey) etc are good for you.
Oh, and complex carbs. Basically, eat like a diabetic is "supposed" to. Everyone should, anyway.... theoretically.
