It's not much worse than getting a vaccination. They put the chip in with a big needle - it looks scarier than it is. The cats don't even notice it after the initial poke. Both my kitties are chipped - they are indoor only and don't wear collars. One thing though - have your vet scan it to check that its working every once in a while. I've heard they can break. - another thing about the chips, not all vets/stores/shelters use the same chip system so it is possible to not detect a chip even if there is one. If you find a stray and it appears to not be chipped make sure its scanned for all the possible brands before you give up.
