Spam question: Are men THAT obscessed???

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I got up this morning and deleted 20 spam emails. A few were offering me drugs, mostly Viagra. But the majority were for various penile enlargers. Are men THAT obscessed with the size of their penis? If that's true, no wonder the world is in the state that it is. Feh...

Hmmmm.....then I would say that men are THAT obsessed with the size of our breasts, too.

I have a hard time with the word "obsessed" - I don't think men are that shallow. In fact, my husband is a very complex, deep man who is intellectual and someone I respect a great deal. I think that he is more grounded, solid, and less emotional when it comes to making decisions and therefore makes more objective, rational decisions. I truly admire him, as do I admire that quality in a large majority of men. He has his insecurities about the way his body looks, as do I. Just to clarify, size is never something he has had a concern with.
I think that women in general have trials that we face regarding our body images. Are we too fat? Do we have a huge rear end? These body images can lead to major distortions in our perceptions of ourselves and can manifest themselves in very unhealthy ways - anorexia, bulemia, cutting, plastic surgery (breast augmentation) liposuction, etc. Does this make us "obsessed"? Perhaps a few women are because they take their concerns about their body images to the extreme, but mostly, no.
Men, too have insecurities about their bodies that stem from societal pressures. I don't think that it is fair to say that they are obsessed - although their may be a few men here and there who are - but that they have the societal pressures just like we do.
Just like women are targeted by companies to "help" us with our insecurities - enter Maybelline, Weight Watchers, Virginia Slims, so do companies target men - enter viagra, penis enlargers, etc.
We all have our insecurities, but what is at the heart of it isn't a stupid vain woman or a penile obsessed man, but a human being with a heart and some distortions about what normal is.

    That's funny.
I get those penis related spams all the time but I don't think I've ever gotten one offering to make my boobs bigger.

There's any one of a number of things that I could say, but I'll leave it at a polite "NO"

Frankly, it is what it is and rumor has it that you can't do anything to change it (without some form of deliterious effects )

I hope you don't let a group of Ethiopian spammers define your idea of what men think about...

I was just frustrated and caffeine deprived when I sent that note out this morning...

Most of the men I've known weren't particularly obscessed with size. Or, as Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes so aptly put it, "It ain't the meat, it's the motion..."

With the number of emails I get, though, you'd think there was an epidemic of micropenis and that was all men (and women) thought about.

Caffeine deprivation is a terrible thing, ain't it?

It's amazing what Outlook "Rules" can do to clean up the Inbox... Using "Rules", I don't get a single Viagra or Enlargement spam message (and I'm glad...I thought someone was trying to tell me something )

Kind of a tangent but on a local news show a few months ago, the DC-area AIDs/HIV rate was being discussed. The "experts" on the show mentioned that there has been a rise in AIDs/HIV rates among local folks 60 and older. The reason---Viagra and similar medications---according to the "experts."

I've never found perfection particularly interesting, especially when it requires changing your appearance to fit someone else's version of "beauty." I agree w/Flybye, as well. Sounds trite but it's so true that beauty comes from the inside. How you treat other people is what matters.

I agree with Mr. Silver that men are not as obsessed as those ads would have you believe. It's just a form of marketing and as with any marketing these companies are trying to create a need: in this case, by exploiting the insecurities of some. I still remember all those douche commercials from my childhood about that "not so fresh feeling." In jr. high, I made the mistake of using one of them. Yeow! Not good. The cleansing agent gave me a very unpleasant tingly/burning sensation and the perfumes gave me a rash. Never again.

What is weird about this whole thing is that I get tons of those emails through the filter at my office (a public school network), but very few in my personal email (gmail).

And I have to agree with Zen, I have never received one suggesting I enlarge my breasts - good thing, since I would have to decline and offer to donate to some underdeveloped country.....I mean....individual.

That may have something to do with it but did I think there's more. That demographic includes those who came of age during the 60's along with the BCP and sex without so much risk. The worst that could happen back then had a cure. Now those people are losing spouses to death and divorce and are back into a dating population of sorts. It's sort of an "it can't happen to me, I'm an old man/woman" sort of thing.

Riiiiight, "it's a Gay disease, it can't happen to me."

Nope, it's a virus, it doesn't care who you are.
