Cycle Ops Question

I have an old Trek 800 that I just started riding again after a long, long time off my bike. I live near Chicago and the weather will soon be too cold, icy and snowy to ride outside so I'm thinking about the Cycle Ops Fluid Trainer for the winter.

Will my Trek 800 work with the Cycle Ops Fluid? I found it at Brands for $244.99/free shipping. I don't have a LBS that I like enough to ask all my newbie questions and I know you girls with have the answer for me

Can anyone recommend a good bike shop that won't look strange a very newbie rider with lots of questions in the NW suburbs of Chicago?

why wouldn't your bike work with the Cycle Ops?
These trainers simulate the ground.

the worst thing that could happen is the pin (sorry, i don't know the name) axle?
that holds the rear wheel on might not be right so you'd need to get another one at the bike shop (I can;t imagine that they cost more than 15 dollars)

but you should be able to put any regular sized bikes on that thing!

I don't know why it wouldn't work...that's why I needed to ask before I spend the money

Thanks for the info! If I was buying it at the LBS I would ask them, but it's $50 more and since I don't have a favorite shop I'm going to order from Brands and save the $50.

It'll work just fine, just get a spare Quick Release because it can chew up your QR.

Actually, CycleOps has a proprietary skewer that comes with the trainer. The width is correct for the trainer mount. If you lose it, you could get another one from CycleOps, or just get a cheapy from your LBS.

Fancy skewers will be too wide (which is why they might get chewed up). If you don't swap the skewer, you run the risk of the bike falling out of the trainer (I've seen it happen many times, including me at my very first race).

It will come with a skewer and you will be able to put your mtb on it just fine. I have my road bike on it and we have had Steve's old Trek 800 on it. Both work just fine.
