... today I met a man at the library who sent me an email last week 'cause he "just found out" about our bike map project. I have been totallyf rustrated with my own inability to put together my part - picking out the better routes through town.
The man had been in volved in "Households Involved in Pollution Solutions" back in the day (The acronym is HIPS - that should tell you what day :-)) - turns out that he had kept about six maps of the "best biking routes" map that he was instrumental in designing.
He mentioned that yes, map stuff could be done online, wiki style... I showed him waht we were wroking on (yup, we have a wiki and are working on a Google-style map project) and he said "Where have you been all my life?" (I was feeling the same way about those maps!).
SO! Moral of the story is -- remember 1972 (and the dozen or so years before)! There may already be resources and people who still want to make things better for cycling, just waiting to come out of the woodwork, who know what great ideas almost made it then and might be worth reviving now.

I'm afraid I remember 1972 all too well.

    Wasn't that year before last?
