    Firecracker incident update

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I received a phone call from the county attorney this morning. He is willing to bring charges against the young man who throw the firecrackers at me while I was out riding last week. He is going to charge the young man with wanton endangerment which carries up to 12 months jail time and/or a $500 fine. I did tell him I'm really not interested in this kid going to jail but I do want him to fully understand the seriousness of his actions. I must admit I'm pleasantly surprised that he is going to file charges for I figured it would get swept under the rug and nothing would come of this. The county attorney was going to begin the paperwork today and will call me sometime next week to set up an appointment to talk about where things are heading. I'll keep the group posted.

The Powers that Be tend to feel that way too - unless he's already got a history, in which case it's time he was held accountable. Good for you for sticking with this - it takes nerve and firmness !

Thanks for pursuing it! I truly think it matters that we follow up on that stuff.

Thanks for the update. I agree--this guy needs to know that his actions have consequences and endangering someone else's safety means something. Good for you--and your county attorney!

Good on you and good on your DA! If this is a first offence, you may have luck arguing for appropriate public service down the line. If the guy's a repeat offender then maybe it's time for something he'll take more seriously (although, like you, I don't have much faith in jail as a learning experience). Good luck with the case!

Good thing the DA will press charges! Maybe some of these idiots will think twice about harassing cyclists.

    Thanks for keeping us posted!!

I agree, jail isn't a good learning experience......

If this is his first offense, perhaps some type of public service would be in order.

Good for you for following through!!!

    Happy to hear it!

So often people get away with torturing cyclists.... at least this one won't.

Very happy to hear this. I also feel the same about the jail thing if he does not have a history of doing things like this or anything else to people.

That's great news! Good job on following up! Maybe they should have to install bike racks around town. That would be a good punishment!
