    bike rack for PT Cruiser?

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I'm hoping to find a bike rack I can mount on the rear gate of my PT Cruiser. I don't want a hitch mounted rack, or a top mount. Is there such a thing?

    thanks,

    Ellen

Thule has a selector to help you find the trunk rack that fits your car. I couldn't get it to work on my Mac. Here's the link to where my computer quit: http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/default.asp

I have a Thule trunk rack on my hatchback Subaru (kinda shaped like a PT Cruiser, but not quite) and it works very well. Very stable and secure (knock wood). You have to be sure to get the right rack for your make of car. They have several.

Mine hooks to the top of my hatch (near the roof), the sides of the hatch (left and right) and the bumper liner underneath. So there are six clips holding the rack in place. The rack looks like a wish-bone with one set of "arms" at the bumper where it meets the hatch, and the other "arms" against the back glass, and the bikes on the "wish".

It takes me about 5 minutes to put it on the car, and maybe 2 to take it off.

Oooh, hey, I just got the selector to work. I had to guess on the year of your car, but this will give you an idea:

This is what I have - easy on, easy off. Takes about 30 seconds once you get the straps adjusted for your car. The 103 holds 3 bikes, but there is a 2 and a 4 bike rack as well. I think I paid about $59 for it 5-6 years ago.

THeir website has a rack finder feature as well - enter your vehicle info and they tell you which style rack will fit.

Only complaint I have is that it does not fold up flat for storage, but I can live with that.

We have a Thule Speedway 2. We bought it because I can't manage a roof rack at 5'2" without a step ladder. It works perfectly on my Dodge Caliber. It mounts the way Knotted described hers (might be the same one). We have used it on long road trips (longest was a 6 hour drive) with no issues. It is easy to install, easy to remove. And the price is very affordable, I think it was around $80-90 two years ago. It doesn't fold flat, but this is a small complaint.

Around town I see a lot of the Saris "Bones" rack. I think that one is more expensive, but might fold flat.

I'm not sure which Thule I have. I got it used from a friend. Mine holds 3 bikes (S.O.'s, mine, and SKnot's) but so far I've only had 2 on it.

Haven't quite figured out how to put 3 on without having them bumping and damaging each other. (instruction manual is wandering around somewhere) But I did find that with two (left the middle rack empty) it really helped to strap the front wheels to the bike frames.

Yakima Q Tower Roof Racks are changeable to fit the PT roof. I bought a used set and purchased the gutter hooks that are compatible with the PT. It’s good as you can outfit to hold the bikes put a cargo carrier, snowboard and lumber. But with the rear I am not in a position to say something…

When I went to get my rack, the bike store had a list of which ones fit which cars.

Ellen, The King Joe by Yakima would fit your PT Cruiser. I know that Yakima has great customer service. Here's a link: http://www.bikerackshops.com/YA026KINGJOE.html.

You can find fit guides for the major brands at http://www.bikerackshops.com/fit_guides.html.

To avoid damage to your Cruiser's finish, be sure to keep both the car and the strap rack feet as clean as possible. Have fun traveling with your bikes!
