    Pedals?

Calling all racing enthusiasts.... what is your favorite pedal? Pros/cons - cost, etc.....

I've been using Time Impact pedals on all my bikes so I don't have to change shoes. (Somehow I've only had one pair of cycling shoes for the past three years - sidi.) But recently after 10,000 miles on one set they pretty much bit the dust. Unfortunately Time has discontinued that specific model and I'm looking for something similar. Advantages: nice platform to clip into. Strong and NEVER pulled out - a must for any new pedals. Disadvantages - super spendy cleat replacement ($40 retail), a biaaaatch to get off my bike (I had to drive my bike into the shop to have them take them off).

I switched to Speedplay but find the super duper float too much and the cleat plat too hard to adjust to just right... it's making my left knee tender. Not to mention I'm not comfortable having float will sprinting - I feel like applying 1000 watts is going to blow up the pedals.

    Any suggestions?

    Muchos Gracias.

I have SPD-road 105s and love them. Cheap and very functional. I think you can have different types of cleats for different degrees of float, but I was not offered a choice. I have no more than 10-15 degrees there but that's enough for me.

Thanks Grog. I found them on sale - in the Ultegra version - and LOVE them. They have an excellent platform which I can feel when pulling up in the pedal stroke - essential for track and road sprinting. The cleat was easy to dial in - got it the first try and was also able to sell the barely used Speedplays. Ahhh - my knees are much happier! Sssssank you!

Glad you found something you like. I hear you on that annoying float on speedplays when you are not used to it. It took a while but now I prefer them to other pedals. I guess I like the fact that there is barely any pedal there. As far as dropping watts on them, go as hard as you want and they'll do the job. I'm still a big woman and have had dumb momments and climbed hard hills on my 52 thinking the pedals would come off or I would unclip, hasn't happened yet. In fact all the guys on our mens team use them without problems, and you can be sure they produce more then 1000 on climbs and sprints.

I agree - it's totally preference. I guess I'm just used to a larger platform - but some people live by speedplays - and I'm glad they work for them! Happy riding!

    Hiya Pink --

Just 'fer future reference, Speedplay also has a pedal with zero float (Speedplay Zero). You can set it to whatever float degree you want, or none at all. I use them and love them (titaniums). The itsy-bitsy platform also gives confidence in pedaling through the tight corners. The float did feel weird at first -- like pedaling on ice! -- but I soon got used to it.
