Temperature/Rain pants

I haven't gotten to try out my Novarro rain pants yet, since of course since I bought them it hasn't rained, but the forecast tomorrow for my 200 mile out-and-back is 50% chance of rain till 8PM. (None Sunday, but I will be able to send my rain clothes back in my bag.) Temp is going to be 63F at the start, with a high of 81F. I'm thinking that might be a little warm for rain pants, but I don't really want to ride 100 miles soaking wet, either.

All I can remember about riding in rain is last summer when it was in the 90's, and rain was welcome.

Anyone have experience with this? I am a freeze baby.

Showers Pass jacket and helmet cover and toe covers are going for sure.

I'm trying to only take my small trunk bag, so I don't look like a total dork, but maybe these are more touring people, so the bigger bag won't seem that out of place. I'll have dry clothes waiting for me at the end.

I wore my rain pants over shorts on my tour in Europe last summer. At the start of the first long day, it was in the 50's and raining steadily. Everyone made fun of us in our rain gear, but there IS a reason why they make these products. When it stopped raining and started warming up a little, I did take off the jacket and booties, but I kept the pants on until the lunch stop. It would have been easy to get them off and roll up and put in my bag, but I wasn't too hot.

In my opinion, 63 is too warm for rain pants if you are riding steadily. But if it happened to be 5 degrees cooler you would want them. So my thought would be to carry them just in case, or start with them on and be prepared to remove them as soon as you start to overheat. Worst scenario is that you start without and later the temperature drops, forcing you to either ride chilled or pull rain pants on over very wet legs. The latter option is really better than riding chilled, but its hard to convince yourself to do.

I wear mine when the temps are low (30's) or if it is raining and colder than about 60. You ought to bring them with you just in case (remembering how grateful you are that you only need to carry unnecessary rain pants 100 miles instead of 600k... ). If you do need them, you'll be happy you have them. (Put them in one of those giant ziplocks!)

I am bringing my rain pants and showers pass jacket this weekend. 60% chance of t-storms tomorrow and 30% for Sunday. I figure it may also just be cold Saturday night/Sunday morning so I may be glad to have them (along with my 25 pounds of cliff blocks - what's an extra few ounces for a pair of pants!)

Um.. I was meaning to PM you about that...

I think I am going to skip DMD completely. Mike is super worried about me doing the the 600 - especially the late at night part on 128 (the 600 was really a whim and now I am fairly committed). Anyway, I originally decided to do the 600 because he and Em are gone this weekend, so it works. I have a board meeting in Sac late the night before DMD, which wasn't ideal to begin with and now I am getting a fair amount of pressure to just stay home with family DMD weekend. I haven't decided completely. I will decide by Monday.

If I skip it, I will wish I had done it. If I do it, it's 2 weekends away from the kid. So it is a tough call. But I'm leaning toward the kid right now.

Well, I managed to roll the SP jacket small enough to fit in my small trunk bag, and the pants small enough to go on top, and the other stuff inside...

Sarah, if you get too cold, you can build an igloo out of the Clif Blocks, and eat your way out in the morning.

Smarty pants. (Oh! No pun intended!)

The original version of the SP jacket was so light you'd put iti your jersey and think it had fallen out. This one is thicker but warmer.

I think warm is important. If it's warm and raining here, you dn't need a jacket unless you just don't like getting wet.

I'm leaving in about 30 minutes. Almost forgot Gatorade, Polar Bottle, Coke Blak...Who knows what else, better get out the list...
