i think someone tried to steal my/our bikes!

the post about remembering to remove your bike from the roof rack reminded me!

saturday... after the stagecoach... hubby loaded up the bikes on the rack

he locked them.. using the cable... which he does when he knows we are stopping somewhere (we were stopping at in n out as well as sam's and super walmart for a couple of things i needed)

we stopped for gas about 20 minuted from home... and he tells me my bike was "laying out" flat and the only thing holding it on was the cable lock! now he is meticulous about making sure the wheel holder thingy is tight and secure... heck... one time with the mountain bikes we were on a dirt road and i was telling him to slow down cuz we were bouncing all over.. the bike never moved!

so i said: so you think someone tried to steal my bike? at first he said no.. but the more he thought.. the ONLY reasonable explanation is that someone walking by in one of the parking lots thought they were going to unlock the wheel lock and take my bike (sad thing.. they most likely had NO idea what they were trying to take! )

on the very off chance that the wheel lock did slip.. he's just going to always lock the bikes with the cable from now on.. even if we are going directly to a ride with no stops.... better safe than sorry!

Ugggh....terrible! Thank goodness the cable was on there good & secure. That's one of my biggest fears with using the roof rack and having to stop somewhere. I keep a cable lock in the trunk if need be.

that's why i liked the other rack we had... the bike top tube sat on the rack.. then the top thingy went over that.. clamped down.. and LOCKED! but hubby didn't want to use that on the carbon bikes.. wanted a rack that didn't touch the frame...

even with the cable... i worry... cuz if some jackbutt has a bolt/cable cutter!

i was just checking out more/other locks... maybe a U lock with an additional cable! that would make them have to work more to try to steal it!

i normally drag him out do do some shopping after organized or "down the hill" practice rides.. to make it worth the trip and gas... now i'm gonna be worried if i'm in a mall... will i come out and find my bike gone?

I has someone try to steal my motorcycle out of the bed of my truck at a motel. I got up the next morning and found it laying on it's side with scratch marks all over the lock.

I've heard that those of us who are NOT thieves have a very hard time understanding how someone could do that.

i guess some would say it serves me right for being at super walmart or sam's but dang it... i like to save money too! (soy milk 2.74 a half gallon.. vice 3.99 at local grocery store bananas at sam's 3 pounds for .99... .58 a pound at local store! plus the ones from sam's just have a better flavor!) so i try to stock up at the cheaper stores! maybe we need to buy a new vehicle.. one of those funny looking honda's so we can put the bikes inside!

I lock my bike whenever it's on the rack- the lock is built in and really easy to use. If we have BF's bike on there, we lock the wheels separately with a cable lock.

In my shed, which is locked, I lock my bike to the window bars, and lock my MTB to the metal upright of the shed, with cable locks. Takes an extra step when going riding, but no one is going to break into the shed and get away with a bike. I started doing that after the house break-in attempt.

Yes, my biggest fear also. I have to admit that even with my or our bikes in our mini van, dark tinted side an rear windows, we don't stop at the mall. If we do stop at a shopping center my husband locks the bikes even inside the van. Maybe this is going to a little much to the extreme but it is all his idea and my luck something would happen if he listened to me and of course it would all be my fault. <grins>

I don't get it at all but from the only thief I know (don't ask, HER side o' the family) as near as I can figure they think sumthin' like this:

if you didn't lock it so hard that I can't get at it, it's mine or you really don't want it that much anyway


had to explain to him "did you buy it?" "no" "did someone give it to you?" "no" "did you win it in a drawing?" "no" "then whatever it is it's &^%$ not yours!" "but......"

I have a rack similar to yours and I found my bike lying on the side after realizing that the bike hadn't been hooked in (thought hubby did it since he took my bike out for me and put it on the rack). Glad I had my lock.

Also, having a bike inside your vehicle doesn't guarantee theft prevention. All they need to do is break the window, grab your bike and go. I recommend making sure it's locked to the vehicle (friend lost a bike this way).

We have a thule rack, where the fork locks into a front skewer and the back wheel sits in a tray. Both our bikes were locked, as well as our friends bikes on their car (same time of rack). we had gone into a restaurant for dinner.

WE came out and our friends bikes were stolen (over 10000$ in bike ouch!) and my husband noticed two guys with his bike, he yelled, they dropped the bike and ran. They had used something to weaken the metal and plastic and took the whole bike and the tray right off the roof rack! they had obviously tried with mine, parts of the rack was cracked, but the thieves had better luck with my husbands bike. we came out in time to save our bikes.

fortunately no scratches! thank gawd!!!!!! she "tipped" over and was laying out at a 90 degree angel.... but stopped there... fortunately didn't go further and drag on the road!

i mentioned to hubby that too bad the elements were so fugly (well.. they are!) cuz we could get one for bike rides and the bike would be safer inside when we go shopping after! (i was just "talking"... didn't mean to run out and get one!)

so he starts looking online and then calls and asks if i want to go look at them (and scions)

the only problem... we both want our next 2nd vehicle to have GPS.... especially since that is the vehicle that goes to rides... my car has it.. and it's so cool to just punch in the address and let the "lady in the dash" tell us where to go! we REALLY miss it in the truck!

oh well... i guess they make after market ones that can be installed.... (but last time i looked at elements.. i just didn't like them... sooooo utilitarian! NO plushness at all!)
