How exactly do you buy/sell a ride registration?

I'm looking to buy a registration for a popular upcoming century ride that is sold-out (Civil War Century, in case anyone out there is selling one). I'm already registered, but a friend will be visiting that week and would also like to do the ride.

If we can't get a registration for her, I might sell mine and do a different ride with her that weekend.

This has me wondering -- how does this transaction actually work? The registration means my name will be a on a list at the ride start. There's nothing physical to transfer to the buyer. So does the buyer just lie and claim to be the seller when they get there? Or does the seller give the buyer a letter stating they have permission to ride in their place?

It might depend on the ride. DH and I do the Horsey Hundred every year and we just need to give them our name to get our armbands. We don't show proof of who we are, and frankly, I'm not sure how much they care if somebody has already paid for the registration. If the registree gets something that actually has a name or number on it, I'd ask the person who's taking your registration to change it if they can in case they get in an accident.

We did a ride at a federal armory last year and, for that, we actually had to show ID, but that was for security purposes. I can't imagine that's the norm.

It really depends on the ride.

I've bought and sold blood sweat and gears registrations. Purchasing, I used paypal (the person was out of town) and he emailed me what I needed. Selling, it was local, and the person brought me cash and I sent an email as soon as I got home.
