Not sure if this is what you are looking for but I love my tricross. Sturdy, can load it up, not afraid of it accidentally dropping. It isn't pretty but it is a great workhorse of a bike.

I just want something to ride to the store, the gym & for errands. Does anybody have an brands/makes that they love? There is so much out there that my brain hurts reading the descriptions. I hate to start driving around town until I sorta know what I'm looking for.
I basically want to put baskets on it, I want it to have substantial tires for dirt paths & curb hopping. Fancy isn't a prerequisite & may actually be a detriment because it would be more steal-able.
Thanks!

How far are you talking about riding it? Do you need something light enough to get up hills? What's your budget? My Trek Navigator has been bulletproof, and it's all I need for flatland grocery runs and errands under 10-12 miles RT. But I wouldn't want it as a hill country or longer distance commuter.

Are you wanting new? Do you want an upright riding postion or more of a road bike position? What about looking on craigslist for a used mtn bike that you can put semi-knobby tires on and still put a basket on the front and a rear rack and baskets on the back?
For my commuter/errand bike, I have a 1983 Motobecane mixte I got on craigslist for $80. It's semi-fast, provides a smooth ride, and I don't worry about it getting stolen (although I would be devastated if it did).
