    Valentine's Day

How many cookies do 5th graders need in one day?

I love how parents don't read notes that go home. "Tell me if you're sending extra treats, so don't get too many." My students are getting one cookie to take to lunch and the other five, yes five, will go home with them.

In addition to the nerds, candy hearts, kisses, etc.

Valentine's is almost as much of a junk food fest as Halloween! It's no wonder childhood obesity is on the rise.

When did this crazy trend start? I have a 4th grader. Last week I asked him if he wanted to buy a box of Valentines for his class and was told "Absolutley not, 4th graders don't do that anymore". Well yesterday I picked him up from an afterschool activity and he insisted we had to go to the store because he has to have candy for everyone in his class. He said when he told the others he wasn't going to bring Valentines, they all loudly booed him. He was so upset. He is not a boy who has ever succumbed to peer pressure before so not sure what had him so upset.

And yes, I did bring him to the store to pick something out. Fortunately, he will throw most of his away, he likes good quality chocolate and is not a big fan of all the other junk.

It is still going on in 7th grade... a lot of little bears, carnations, and some valentine's cards... but also there was a lot of chocolate going around. I was given a couple of little treats and a chocolate apple for the teacher.

OTOH- my DH surprised me with a big early Valentine's Day spread - red roses chocolate, sparkling cider, a bottle of wine and a new rear view mirror so I have one for my glasses and one for my sunglasses. I lost my extra one when it fell off on El Tour de Tucson in November. (I think he is trying to distract me from realizing that he wants to start training for a 100 mile run next year!)
