    Question Continental Tire Problems

    To disable ads, please log-in.

The webbing on the outside of my almost brand new conti's is falling off! Is this a cosmetic issue or a hazard? I emailed conti & got no response (grrr...)

These are the 4 season, expensive ($60+) tires. I've noticed my last few tires had problems with some of the threads next to the rim coming loose - but this is a first.

Naturally, this is the rear tire. It looks OK and I've noticed that the conti 4000's don't even have this webbing. I hate to blow out in the middle of nowhere.

    Help!

I have had the same thing happen on some high end Bontrager tires I have. It seems to be cosmetic, to me. I had a guy at the LBS look at it, and he said it might increase the possibility of a flat if something flew up and hit the side of the tire. I'm not going to replace them until I have enough miles to justify it.

I did some digging around & I think they call it "duraskin" and like you said, it is supposed to prevent flats from sidewall damage. Since the tires are practically new, I'll probably keep riding them.

a bit ot, but Conti used to make Bontrager tires. I remember buying a conti folding, getting it home, and finding a Bontrager inside the box

I have Conti Gatorskins with Duraskin on two bikes and haven't had a problem... So far!! I'd see about contacting them on warranty or talk to the folks where you bought them (if that's possible.)

We have this and it is normal.
It can be an irregularity in the finish of handmade tires.

do you mean little threads? That happened to the tandem of a friend of mine and the tire wall collapsed and the stoker ended up with a broken hip AND a broken collarbone!!!! he had been seeing those threads and discounted it.. until it was too late.

I've sent two emails & no response. Since they seem to be in Germany, it's a little hard to sit on their doorstep.

I bought another 4 Seasons Conti & if the same thing happens, I'm done with that style.

It isn't just the little threads - it is the entire duraskin - about 8 inches of it - that is becoming unattached from the sidewall. I've had those little threads before & they never seemed to be a problem.

For what it's worth I use their Grand Prix 4000's and they do the same thing??? The tire itself seems fine, I've never had any flats or blow outs. I've heard other people have the same thing and they haven't had any catastrophes due to the weird little threads coming off the sides???

I was at my LBS today & showed the mechanic my tire. He said conti's are softer & have a more pure rubber than other tires. For that reason, they are particularly sensitive to climate changes. I recently began parking my bike on the patio, and that is when I started to have problems.
