    Mackinac Island

Just got back from a trip to Northern MI with the family. We spent a day on Mackinac Island. I'm very glad we brought our own bikes. Some of the hills were straight up. We also biked the path around the island, about 8.5 miles--it was one of the most scenic rides I've ever done.

We camped at Wilderness State Park and did some hiking and mountain biking with the kids. We took the kids on an Adventure Bike Ride Explore (that's what we called it). We brought our hiking boots and I made a "scavenger hunt" list for the kids. They had a blast. The trail was rougher and more secluded than I anticipated. We saw a lot of wildlife. We lost a wheel off the Burley at one point, but DH was able to patch it together temporarily. A few sections of trail were covered with water deep enough so that the burley looked like a motor boat and dd put her feet up on the handlebars of the tag-along to keep from getting soaked.

And following tradition, we took the kids on a night-hike. There are a lot more wildlife out after the sun goes down. We hiked out to Waugoshance Point. The highlight was hearing a pack of wolves barking and yelping!

I love Mackinac! I actually wasn't that far from you this weekend My parents have a lake house in a little town between Traverse City and Harbor Springs. Northern MI is the best place to be in the summer.

Sounds like you have a wonderful time on your get-a-way!

Beautiful pictures. Mackinac Island is one of the most beautiful places in Michigan. I haven't been in years but did the island loop last time I was there. Scenic and picturesque. I just got back from Grand Haven, Holland, and Saugatuck today. The Great Lakes are the place to be!

    The Great Lakes

[QUOTE=Bike Writer;586473]The Great Lakes are the place to be![/

When I was up there in May this was a typical day. The first is a view of the AuSable River near the Lumberman's Monument - one of my favorite places to ride bikes. The others are of Lake Huron - taken from our front yard. One of my favorite places in the world. I'll try to get up to Mackinac on my next trip - even if I have to go alone.

    Withm,

Great photos! Lake Huron for a front yard is fabulous!

Each of the Lakes is so different but all are vast like oceans. My niece just had her mother-in-law for a visit from Maryland and her perception of Michigan was all big city because we are known for automobiles. The niece and nephew took her up to Traverse City, Petoskey and Charlevoix (all costal towns along the shores of Lake Michigan in the northern lower penninsula for those not familiar) and she was amazed at the beauty of the state. Those areas are also some of my favorite places. I just have too many favorite places in Michigan.
