    Should I Apply?

My city has a Bicycle Advisory Committee which advises the city council on community biking goals, etc. My DH is on the committee. He received an email from the Chairperson of the committee stating that someone on the committee quit (didn't give a reason), and asked if I would be interested in applying. It involves a once per month meeting for approx 2 hours, and reading any material prior to the meeting that would be of discussion.

Most folks on the committee are avid cyclists, commuters, bike business related, etc. (9 members). I'm basically a "new" rider in the last 7 months after being essentially off a bike for years. I think that as a newby I might be able to offer different viewpoints from the more seasoned rider members. The application is online, then there is an interview. I guess in the worst case scenario they wouldn't choose me. If I am chosen, then there is the formality of going before the City Council to be confirmed.

My DH thinks I would be a valuable member, especially as a new cyclist. I just wonder if my opinions could really make a difference.

    Thoughts?

GO, give your 2 cents. You'd be amazed at how much is decided by so few.

As a new bicycle rider your perspective will be fresh and yes, you have a lot to offer!

Don't let the apperance before council spook you, they're just people.

    Yes do apply!

I've been to few community meetings. Meetings approved by and sanctioned by the city counsel. Sad part is that committee members for the most part are working in vacume. Very little or no input from the interested parties. Cycling very few showed up, community garden no one showed up, community recycling and going green no one showed up... Well except for me on occasion.

Agree with everyone else, go for it. I think we need a broader perspective than those currently involved so some decisions of late, seem more suited to "seasoned" cyclists and seem to not address the needs of newer cyclists.

Definitely apply. Our Town recently created a similar commission and the resolution specifically requires cyclists of varying levels of ability.

As a new cyclist you will absolutely be able to provide a different perspective by raising issues that the others may take for granted, or not even notice, any more.

    Go for it!
