San Diego Cyclist killed, another in critical condition

A biotech exec was killed on a protected bike path when a 27-year-old driving an SUV at high speed lost control while she was changing lanes and drove up a 15-foot embankment, through a chain-link fence, flipping the SUV and hitting the exec, who died within a few minutes, and the president of our county YMCA who is also an avid triathlete, and I think one other person who was not hospitalized.

The woman said she was changing lanes to the right (I'm guessing she was passing someone in the second lane), saw a car in the far right lane, overcorrected and lost control.

Kinda terrifying. DH rides this path to work sometimes. I think it's a freak accident, but all the same, people do drive this highway at very high rates of speed. It's one of several major arteries from the inland suburbs to the coastal industrial/business centers.

    Terrible.
While this seems like an unusual type of accident, it is upsetting to me, since I just was driving on some of these roads.

I didn't know you were here in San Diego. Darn. I would have liked to have lunch or something.

Yeah, it's pretty heartbreaking. The man who was killed had two school-age kids.

How awful! Yes, it was a freak accident, and something like that will probably never happen again, there, but that doesn't help the girls who lost a daddy and the other family members/friends who lost a loved one.

    Tragic.

This is really tragic and indeed a freak accident, although of course speed is a large part of the cause and this could have been avoided. I feel terrible for all those left behind.

The sentence in the article "Both were wearing helmets." really irks me. I mean, what use is a helmet when it's raining SUVs??

But if they weren't, the article would have mentioned it as if it would have possibly saved them, and the cyclists were partially responsible for their fate.
