    Ugh! Chamoix cream advice

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I have been reading a lot of threads from you lucky women that do not need to use chamoix cream. I am not one of you! I need the stuff from mile 1! Everyone has their special needs I guess that this one is mine.

I am back to riding again from a very long hiatus and I am in the market for a much better chamoix cream. I just tried the DZ nuts bliss cream for women, but it sure did burn at first. I have heard that some are worse than others. And I do seem particularly sensitive. So:

1.) anyone got a recommendation of what else to try?

2.) also would love to know what to AVOID!

I HATED Bliss...that crap burned my bits for days after I used it. I don't know which ingredient had that effect, but I haven't had that issue with anything else.

The products I like best are That Butt Stuff (I bought it 'cause the name made me chuckle, but discovered that I really like it), with the addition of a bit of Brave Soldier Friction Zone for my longest rides. I use TBS on the chamois, then add the Friction Zone directly to any specific areas that have a history of giving me trouble.

I used to use Chamois Butt'r and was happy with it until it started causing some skin problems. I don't think it was an allergy because it didn't happen all the time, but sometimes I would develop a slight rash after using it. (I have very sensitive skin that's prone to contact dermatitis, so this would not necessarily be a problem for you.)

Last year I started using Hoo Ha Ride Glide, which works fine and so far my skin is okay with it. It tingles a bit, I think from peppermint, but nothing annoying or burning. The other day I did a 5-hour ride, and I think I would have been better off if I'd reapplied it mid-way through the ride. But there was only slight chafing, and this is the first time I've felt that it started to wear off before my ride was done -- it's been fine for rides up to 4 hours long.

I was able to get small samples of Hoo Ha Ride Glide at my LBS, so I could try it for free.

I've tried several and like Assos best but Chamois B'tter, Moo and PBK have also been okay. I also have really sensitive skin and have to be careful.

I don't use anything on the chamois, but for longer rides I use a little Eucerin Aquaphor directly on my bits. It's a skin ointment rather than a chamois cream, and I always have it around for general skin use (chapped or cracked skin). I have found it works great for riding, too.

LOL- been there, done that! more than once.

I also like bag balm (used on cows udders to prevent infection) and the other one whose name I can't remember that comes in a black and white cow patterned plastic tub. Unfortunately I can't find that one around here, and bag balm is only found occasonnally so Butt Btr (purple and yellow tube) is my go to. They also make individual packets that are handy to toss in a jersey pocket for reapplication mid ride as needed.

when in doubt, lube, lube, lube.

Marni, I had thought about Bag Balm, but after reading something about petroleum-based products degrading the chamois foam I decided against it. That's why I stopped using Chamois Butt'r, too.

Could your shorts be a problem? Just asking. I have had shorts that caused me issues and tried other's and now no problems!

Bliss is AWFUL, it really does cause the girly bits to tingle and worse. I've been told the men's version is stronger

I use either Chamois Butt'r or TBS (That Butt Stuff). Both are fine - I have a slight preference for TBS but I have to order it online, the other I can pick up ta my LBS which makes it much easier.

I quit using Chamois Butt'r because of the scary chemicals, but I found Beljum Budder irritating - especially when it would work its way inside after a long ride.

I looooove shea butter. It only takes a little, lubricates spectacularly well, doesn't mat the hair like petroleum products will, and lasts a long time, even in the wet - mostly washes out of my shorts and the residue doesn't cause a problem, doesn't stain, non-irritating, one natural ingredient.

Some people use pure coconut oil. The melting point of that is too low for my preferences (especially when it comes to trying to carry a backup supply in a pocket), but YMMV.

Mission Anti-Friction Cream for me. No tingling, no parabens or preservatives, and very long-lasting.
