Sad end to ride.

Well I got back out on my bike today after nearly a two week break and I was so happy. My friend and her family had returned from holidays and their lovely teenage daughter was again available to look after my boys so I could ride. Its beautiful here today and riding in this lovely area made me glad to be alive. So Im heading home and approaching a lovely long descent right near my house I get down in the drops and try to beat my last top speed. Im soaring and then I see it lots of lights and traffic and its all blocking the road so I start slowing and realize hey Im going to have to stop as there is a police man standing in the middle of the road. I come to a stop behind some cars and then I see the scene before me - numerous police cars, fire engines and ambulances. The police man has stopped us so a fire engine can make the turn into the sharp driveway. All around the house on that side of the road is yellow tape and Im thinking this is not looking good. The traffic is starting up again and I take off down the rest of the descent and turn into my street. When I get inside I find my friend there as well as her daughter she is relieved that Im okay. She was listening to the radio and they reported that someone had gone crazy with a shotgun up the road and she thought they said there were multiple victims.
She knew I would be riding home that way and was a little worried for me.

I dont have TV or even radio so I dont know anything more yet, but Im praying for the victims and hoping help arrived to them in time.

I gave all my boys a big hug and couldnt help feeling a little teary thinking that maybe someones little ones may never get that hug again.

Oh my, what a horror of a story. Yes, I could not think of a sadder end to a ride. I am glad to hear that you and your family are ok, however.

That is horrible. I will never understand one's desires to needlessly inflict pain and suffering on another, or a group of people. Just reading the ending to your ride affected me with sadness and chills. Sure am glad you were nowhere near the madman.

Nothing on the national news electronically Saturday evening. What a sad end to what sounded like a lovely ride. I wish these things didn't affect us so much, but they do. Glad you're safe.

Here is the latest on what happened from The Union Newspaper. No shotgun was involved in the incident as reported by local radio.

"A Nevada county woman is dead and her husband was clinging to life late Saturday afternoon after an apparent murder-suicide attempt on Alta Street.

Nevada County Sheriff's Lt. Ron Smith said Hendrika WIlliams, 48 was pronounced dead Saturday morning at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley. She had been shot twice in the head with a nail gun at their home near Mautino Park just outside the city limits.
Richard Williams, age unknown, was in surgery at Sutter-Roseville Medical Center about 4.30pm with two nails that were shot into his abdomen. Police were investigating further at the scene.

Mrs Williams and her husband were apparently in a divorce dispute after 29 years of marriage, Smith said. She was a special education aide in area charter schools. Mr Williams is a contractor."

This is a very sad tale and my heart goes out to the family but Im very relieved no other people were injured.

OMG A NAIL gun! Crazy!! That sounds more like what Red Green would do if he went psychotic! It's crazy and sick and must have been terribly painful and gross! yech!

I'm glad that you're okay, and sorry you had to brush up so close to something so ugly. Yes, your description had me shaky and teary, something that happens each time I hear a siren or see an emergency vehicle racing down the street. I wish more people has such a visceral reaction to pain and horror so that fewer people would do such terrible things.

You need a bit of healing light, so here's sending some your way.

Trek, I'm so sorry for those people, and understand how it shakes you up. There is so much suffering around us, so much of it invisible until it's too late to help. Recently a medivac helicopter had to land in the field right across from us - the closest place it could land to transport a car wreck victim from a half-mile away. The neighbors stood and watched, I wept in the house, knowing from my work how much someone's life was changing, and how lucky I & my loved ones have been so far. Hope you are feeling ok today. I'm sending a big hug your way. How are your boys?

I thought I'd come on here and give you all a little more information about what happened. the two people involved in this incident where my aunt and uncle. my family and theres we're very close all throughout my life. growing up my uncle was my favorite relative. he was very much a kid at heart, and always found the time to play with me. its been some time since I've seen him last, so I dont know what happened during that time that would spark him to do such a thing. my aunt was a very kind hearted loving mother of 2 girls. A 17 year old and a 22 year old, both of which are hit the hardest by this tragedy. my entire family is in a state of shock right now. Everyday you see it on the news, people getting murdered, and family member killing each other. most of us dont think much of it. We’ll feel sorry for the people who died, but forget about it as soon as the next news story starts. many of us think how lucky we are to have happy families, and never think something like this would happen to us.

Oh, my dear, I know I speak with many others in saying I'm so, so sorry. What a terrible thing to happen, and I hope your family will be able to come together to support each other, especially your cousins, in your grief and loss. Terrible things happen, and we can't always know why. Sometimes knowing why doesn't help much. Please feel cared about, even though you don't know many of us who are sad for you. Thank you for your generosity in sharing information about what happened. It can't have been easy for you.

AET - thanks for telling us about your Aunt and Uncle. It is a very sad time for all who knew your Aunt and Uncle. On returning to school today after the holidays I was informed that your Aunt was a loved member of staff at my sons school and her work with special needs students was admired.
Her death is a loss for the whole community.

AET, I am very sorry to hear it was your aunt and uncle. Some of us don't forget stuff like that because it hits very close to home. I've had many years to think about that situation and my conclusion is still uncertain. Time takes care of a lot of wounds.
